With the new decade comes a new census year! This data is crucial in determining state funding, assigning congressional seats, and for businesses who use this data to make strategic decisions about where to locate their businesses, where to open new stores, and where to open a distribution center creating jobs and new opportunities.

Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce

For the first time ever, you will be able to respond by phone, online and through the traditional method by mail ― a paper form ― beginning March 12. It is crucial that every Arizonan knows the value of the Census, and knows that when they respond, their information is protected.

Chair Mark Love Massage Envy

The Arizona Complete Count Committee is built on a very group of Arizonans that includes members of Arizona’s business community, with the priority to make sure that Arizonans know that the Census is safe, easy and important. Taking part is your civic duty, and everyone counts when it comes time in March to see where our state stands. Make your voice heard and be counted in this year!

BUSINESS INFLUENCERS

VIEW FROM THE CHAMBER PRESIDENT’S DESK Throughout the United States, Chamber of Commerce is the second most notable brand after the US Olympics! Pretty neat, right? And the Greater Flagstaff Chamber has been building business and a healthy community alongside many community partners since 1891, for which we are so grateful. Business decision makers who invest in Chambers are proactive business advocates, working to train local talent for open positions in their companies and by doing so investing in our youth, knowing they have the ability to shape our future community leadership.

We share this mission through the focus that the Greater Flagstaff Chamber puts on our young professionals program. Our Flagstaff Young Professionals are eager to engage, connect, and volunteer to better the lives of others and with more than 120 members strong. We pledge to continue to listen and meet the needs of our emerging leaders as this group is poised for growth and expansion in 2020. We believe there are certain influences that impact you and our shared community significantly no matter where our local politics and economy stands. We thrive together when we embrace oncoming pressures and opportunities. To that end, look for more membership surveys that will ask your direction on key issues that continue to bubble up. As your business advocate we will oppose new fees and taxes that add to your cost to do business; we will support ways to sustain our community’s character that do not put burden on your business; and we will ask for deregulation whenever we can to lower the costs you pay now to operate. While it is quite to task to undertake, your Greater Flagstaff Chamber is a well oiled machine with an incredible board of directors and a staff that is passionate about helping our community thrive. Volunteers by the dozens sit on Divisions to distill opinions and then frame positions for our members and community to act upon.

Thank you for your investment in the Chamber!

JOIN OUR COMMUNITY, GROW YOUR BUSINESS, CONNECT & ENGAGE

MISTI WARNER WHAT BROUGHT YOU INTO YOUR BUSINESS OR PROFESSION? I grew up working in my family’s garden center and watching my dad and his brothers build a thriving business. Upon graduating from NAU with a Business Management degree, I realized that I had a passion for the green industry and decided to make a career out of the family business, working in all departments and slowly working my way up in the company. HOW LONG HAS YOUR COMPANY BEEN IN BUSINESS OR HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THIS PROFESSION? Warner’s has been in business for 50 years. I got my first job at the nursery in Page, AZ when I was 7, cleaning the warehouse, watering plants and general yard work. Although I worked other jobs throughout high school and college, I continued my employment with the family business. I started full time at Warner’s upon graduating from college. IF YOU COULD GO BACK AND CHANGE YOUR PATH IN SOME WAY, WOULD YOU? IF NO, WHY NOT? No, I would not change my path. I think I’m right where I’m supposed to be. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE JUST STARTING OUT IN YOUR PROFESSION? Work in the industry to make sure it’s a good fit. Retail is tough but in the horticulture industry it’s grueling and is not known for high pay. You have to love plants and people. Acknowledge your personal strengths and weaknesses and grow a team that complements those, allowing for maximum growth. Honesty and

humility will go a long way in any business.

this industry and are passionate about what we do.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR INDUSTRY? I enjoy the seasonality of the business; we get a fresh start every year which is like an opportunity to do it again but better. I also am a plant nerd; I love our products and that we get to provide something that sparks great emotion.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING IN THE FLAGSTAFF COMMUNITY? I enjoy most aspects of Flagstaff: the seasons, the outdoor activities, the small town feel. However, my favorite part of Flagstaff is the people. Despite everyone having differing opinions on hot topic issues, I feel connected to and supported by the community.

TO WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE YOUR PERSONAL SUCCESS? I had a great role model in my dad. He had my sister and I working in the store when I was 7 years old. I watched him work hard for everything he had, and he expected the same from us. He and my uncles built a strong business model, ensuring we operate in a smart and honest way, allowing us to build onto a successful and strong business. WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN OR TO BALANCE OUT YOUR WORKLIFE? Most of my free time is spent with my three boys and my husband. We are a basketball family, so we watch and play a lot of ball. Gardening is my favorite pastime and my respite, so in the season on my day off I will typically garden in the morning, and play some sport or activity with the boys. I also enjoy my workouts, from cross training to running. WHAT INSPIRES OR RE-MOTIVATES YOU? I get a lot of inspiration from travelling. I enjoy touring other garden centers and growers and participating in industryled training. I also find motivation and get great ideas from my team. I’m lucky to have employees that want to work in

WHAT PART OF YOUR LIFE TODAY COULD YOU NEVER HAVE ANTICIPATED 10 YEARS AGO? I think the biggest surprise to me is my family. I was always very career driven and hadn’t thought about having a family. However, now my husband and my boys are the best part of my life. DO YOU HAVE A RULE OR MANTRA YOU STRIVE TO LIVE BY? I have a sign in my office that reads “Do Good Work”. To me that means not only working hard but also doing the right thing. My dad taught me that it’s important to make the choice that is right from a moral standpoint, even if it doesn’t seem like what’s best for myself or the company. I try to always remember that. WHERE DO YOU HOPE TO BE IN 10 YEARS? In 10 years we’ll have our debt from buying the company paid off. That will allow me to have grown my staff up to a level where they can take over more of the day-to-day store operations so that I can spend more time travelling with my husband and spending time with my boys, wherever they may be.

Message from new APS CEO Jeff Guldner Imagine a world with 100 percent clean energy. We are. For more than 130 years, our company has been providing safe, affordable and reliable energy to millions of homes and businesses across Arizona. We are also at the forefront of a dramatic transition that responds to a desire expressed by stakeholders to decarbonize our electric grid. Without question, the energy industry has a critical role to play in creating a clean-energy economy in the United States, and APS is committed to doing our part. Today, we are making a commitment to Arizona. By 2050, APS will deliver 100 percent clean, carbon-free and affordable electricity to our customers. This goal includes a nearer-term 2030 target of 65 percent clean energy, with 45 percent of our portfolio coming from renewable energy. We also will cease all coal-fired generation by 2031. This goal builds on our history of promoting and integrating renewables, energy efficiency, battery storage and carbonfree generation. Is it aggressive? Yes. Do we believe it is possible? Absolutely. However, we cannot do it alone. It will require a combination of the right technologies, collaborative partnerships and a supportive policy environment that understands flexibility is critical to balance the building of clean generation, while maintaining affordability and reliability for our customers. • Clean: Move toward a lower-carbon grid, anchored by Palo Verde’s carbon-free nuclear power and regulatory policy that allows us to get as clean as we can, as fast as we can. • Affordable: Capitalize on market-driven solutions, flexibility, and attracting new business to grow our state’s economy to maximize resources and bring costs down for customers. • Reliable: Make intelligent investments in new technologies, apply them in pioneering ways and drive research and development to embrace innovation – collaborating with universities and other thought leaders to keep our grid reliable as our generation gets cleaner. Our plan is based on sound science, aimed at helping customers realize their own sustainability goals and attracting more employers to Arizona. While all of the solutions we need are not yet known – and some are yet to be envisioned – achieving and realizing the full benefits of a completely clean energy mix will take partnership. It’s something for all of us, by all of us. This is just the beginning. In the coming weeks, we will be ready to share additional details in our Clean Energy Pathways report, our Integrated Resource Plan and other studies currently underway. We look forward to collaborating with you, our customers, communities, employees, policy makers, shareholders and others to achieve a shared, sustainable vision for APS. We are imagining a world powered by 100 percent clean energy. Join us. Jeff Guldner Arizona Public Service, CEO aps.com/cleanenergy

The Chamber is change. Creating new solutions and powering positive change for everyone in our community requires that we seek out new paths and new partnerships wherever we can. Your progress begins at www.flagstaffchamber.com
