MESSAGE

Dear Friends of

By tradition, Filipinos back home “come of age” when they reach 18 years. That milestone is no less momentous for Fiesta In America as 2016 marks our 18th year as the biggest indoor consumer expo and cultural show of its kind on the east coast. For Fiesta In America, this milestone is both a backward glance and a look ahead. We turn back with pride to revisit our roots. Fiesta In America was born as the US-Philippines Trade Show at the Javits Convention Center in New York 17 years ago – a lifetime for young participants this year. Back then, the small contingent of exhibitors shared the spotlight with beloved stars of homegrown cinema: Amalia Fuentes, Romeo Vasquez, Eddie Mesa…names that do not light up the three-inch screens of smartphones. Yet they occupy a soft spot in the hearts of thousands, for whom LVN and Sampaguita Pictures were the true birthplace of stars. Indeed, it has been a remarkable journey from Gabby Concepcion to Paulo Avelino. We gaze at the future with excitement. Digital technology and the still-evolving Internet will connect Fiesta In America to millions more quickly and widely that my head spins with possibilities. Though I can’t predict what new apps and mobile devices are still to come, one thing is clear: our goal of fostering goodwill among cultures, of promoting exports and tourism, will be advanced by new forms of media that will make Facebook and Twitter as outmoded as the telex and mimeograph machines. We acknowledge our legions of supporters across nearly two decades. More than 200,000 Filipinos and non-Filipinos have been guests of Fiesta In America since its founding. Our Ambassadors in Washington, DC and Consuls General in New York have been our strong advocates, up to the Honorable Mario De Leon, Jr., our friend and outgoing Consul General (see special tribute). As well as the business communities of the Philippines and the United States have provided Fiesta In America with a solid base of sponsors, exhibitors, and advertisers. Please join me in celebrating this milestone and the limitless possibilities ahead. Mabuhay ang Fiesta In America! Mabuhay tayong lahat! Sincerely,

Nanding Mendez President, Fiesta in America

Our Mission To mobilize Filipinos from the US and the Philippines to think "stronger together" is the way to give them a voice in America.

Consul General of the Philippines New York

I congratulate the Fiesta in America as it holds its 18th gathering of Filipino Americans in the East Coast. The Philippine Consulate General in New York recognizes the untiring efforts of the officers and members of Fiesta in America under the leadership of its President and CEO Fernando ”Nanding” Mendez for continuing to organize this event which Filipino Americans look forward to yearly. The event is not just a platform to showcase Philippine products and culture, but provide opportunities to the Filipino Americans in New Jersey, New York and other neighboring states to get together and enjoy performances of Filipino artists both from the Philippines and homegrown. It is also a great avenue to enable Philippine exporters, tourism facilitators, real estate firms and other Philippine businesses to tap the Filipino American market under one roof.

Seeing that this event has made successful strides in bridging the gap between the Philippine business sector and the Filipino American market, I encourage the Fiesta in America to persist in drawing not just Filipino Americans but other demographics in the US as well. Rest assured that we will continue to support Fiesta in America, as it greatly contributes to the Philippine Consulate General’s economic and cultural diplomacy efforts. Office of the Governor New York It is a pleasure to send greetings to the participants, sponsors, and organizers of the annual “Fiesta in America” taking place at the Meadowlands Exposition Center. New York’s greatest strength is its diversity of people and the contributors they make in many areas, including economic development, job creation, and growth of new business and commerce. Individuals of Asian and Latino heritage in the Tri-State area continue to add to the vibrancy and economic prosperity of the region through events such as the annual Fiesta in America, bringing the best of both cultures together in a venue filled with entrepreneurial energy and cultural vitality. For the past 17 years, this trade show has been a popular way for business owners, investors, and others to network within this lively setting of business and pleasure. MESSAGE

Office of the Mayor Secaucus, New Jersey It is my pleasure to welcome Fiesta in America to the Meadowlands Exposition Center again this summer. Now in its 18th year, the Fiesta has become an eagerly anticipated tradition in Secaucus, not only for the many Filipino Americans who make their home here, but also those Asian and Latino residents in our community. The Fiesta’s blend of trade show and cultural exposition provides opportunities for mainstream businesses to reach these strong consumer groups and allows Filipino business to penetrate the mainstream consumer market. Exhibitors reach more than 20,000 consumers whose work ethic and perseverance have made them ideal demographic with high credit ratings and steady incomes. Indeed, they are in the forefront of the American business and cultural community. I congratulate the Fiesta organizers and sponsors on selecting the theme of “Total Wellness” for this year’s event. Health is society’s most important issue and most valued asset. Indeed, the ancient Roman poet Virgil wrote, “The greatest wealth is health.” Festival goers can attend wellness modules focusing on the multiple components of physical and mental health, including diet and exercise, positive relationships and financial stability. In addition to the themed programs, the 2016 celebration will feature pavilions showcasing trade and the rich artistic, culinary and religious heritage of the Philippines.

It is our sincere hope that visitors to the Fiesta will find a warm welcome here. Secaucus is a suburban community located just five miles from Midtown Manhattan. Our town truly combines the best of both worlds! We are proud to say that visitors can kayak on the Hackensack River during the day and take in a Broadway show in the same evening. We hope our guests will so enjoy their stay that they will return to shop, dine, walk along the riverfront and take in the scenic beauty of our Meadowlands home. The popularity of this annual gathering is a testament to your organization. I am certain that is this year’s Fiesta will be the most successful yet. Congratulations! Sincerely,

Michael J. Gonnelli Mayor

From the Cultural Director It is with great pleasure to greet all our kababayans a HAPPY FIESTA! Once again, Filipinos and non Filipinos in the Tri–State area will converge at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, New Jersey to experience the summer’s biggest and most exciting event, 2016 FIESTA IN AMERICA EXPO & CULTURAL SHOW. This year marks the 18th year anniversary of Philippine Fiesta rebranded as Fiesta In America and the first indoor event of its kind in New Jersey to promote Filipino heritage. It was in the year 1996 when it all began at the Javits Convention Center in Manhattan and I can still recall where thousands of Filipinos and non Filipinos alike gathered at the center’s pavillion with one common goal and that is to take pride in celebrating our heritage, the Filipino heritage. It has been four years when we lost a very dear friend of ours who has been the pillar of this event, the Vice President of Philippine Fiesta the late Milagros Beltran Mendez, for all those who knew her intimately and close to her surely she will be missed and forever she will be in our hearts.

The participation of local talented performers has been a major factor in Philippine Fiesta’s accomplishments. Their talents and versatility proved to be at a world class level. Since its inception in 1996, some of the artists who have performed at the Philippine Fiesta have established their name and position in the entertainment industry here in the US and in the Philippines. I would also like to offer my sincerest gratitude to all Chairpersons, Co Chairs of each committees for their support and to Mr. Nanding Mendez, President of Fiesta In America and his family for his/their continued support and still believing in my capacity as Production/ Cultural Director for the past 18 years and to my ever loving friend the late Mila Mendez, no memorial big or small would be ever be sufficient enough to honor you who has done so much for the Filipino community, I missed you! A Special Tribute Consul General of the Philippines, New York

Mario L. de Leon, Jr. Better known as a career diplomat, Ambassador De Leon’s reputation in public service often overshadows the man behind the Consul General. I am privileged to have had long and meaningful discussions with him. I was left with a better impression of the man, his mind, and his heart with each encounter. Ambassador De Leon’s public persona reads like a typical entry in the Who’s Who: A career diplomat, he served as Philippine Ambassador to South Africa with concurrent accreditation to eight other southern African countries. In addition, he was posted to the Philippine Embassy in the United Kingdom (including Ireland and Iceland), the Philippine Mission to the United Nations in New York, and the Philippine Consulates General in New York and San Francisco. At the Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila, he was designated the Chief Coordinator of the Secretary of Foreign Affairs and the Assistant Secretary for Fiscal Management. My dealings with Ambassador De Leon, however, transcends his remarkable resume. He has always been generous with substantive ideas on how Fiesta In America can better promote small Filipino exporters, Philippine tourism, cross-cultural trade and goodwill. His opinions on the value of expanding the expo’s audience among Generation X, Generation Y and millenial Filipino Americans were insightful and forward-looking. He was passionate about the role of large-scale events like Fiesta In America in uniting the often fractured Filipino community of the east coast. Schooled in finance at the SGV Group and grounded in global business at the Philippine Export Processing Zone Authority, he has recognized the potentials of Fiesta In America for networking among Filipino exporters and mainstream importers or distributors. I encourage every follower of Fiesta In America to join me in acknowledging Ambassador Mario L. De Leon, Jr. for his dedication to our country and the profession of diplomacy. Fiesta In America will welcome a new Consul General for the next term, but this ConGen will always have a special place among us.

iesta In America’s purpose is to develop markets for the export and tourism industries of the Philippines to other countries, and to build bridges among multicultural communities. But this combined consumer expo and cultural show is just as driven by other issues vital to its visitor base. Primary among these is an individual’s overall health, which is challenged on a daily basis by stress, bad diets, sedentary lifestyles, and other risk factors. Several sponsors from diverse fields of interest came together to promote the concept of Total Wellness, Fiesta In America’s theme for its 18th Anniversary edition. Painting with a broad brush, the theme signifies various ways, ideas and practices that contribute to a person’s complete well-being. Total Wellness is not easy to achieve, just as “well-being” cannot be defined by any single measure. Physical well-being involves addressing certain illnesses to which Filipinos are susceptible, and following fitness regimens into practice. Brain health includes maintaining positive relationships, relieving one’s self of emotional stressors, being aware of symptoms of mental

health issues such as depression and earlyonset Alzheimer’s. Total Wellness even pertains to financial health, career stability, economic independence. We are grateful to AARP, Goya Foods, Inc., the Hackensack University Medical Center, and Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey who responded to Fiesta In America’s call for presentations or modules that shine different lights on the Total Wellness concept.

Local Performers, Main Stage Talent From rock bands to pop singers and lounge artists to Filipino choirs and other artists, Fiesta in America has it all. And we’re just talking about the local talents on the East Coast who get to shine onstage like the visiting performers from Manila. It’s two days of all day singing and dancing while you enjoy the trade show. Let us know who’s your favorite. Take photos of the performers and share with us on our Fiesta in America Facebook page.

The Band of Brothers

Traipse down memory lane with these millennial musicians whose repertoire makes listeners harken back to the years of rotary phones rather than smart phones. Looking barely out of high school, these artists are drawing a huge following for an act that belies their age: revivals of chart-topping songs by the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Four Tops, and other icons of the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and even the ‘50s. Consisting of the Lozano siblings Jay Jay on various instruments, Pepe on guitar, youngest brother JC on

30  FIESTA IN AMERICA

keyboards, and their friend Neil Manapat on drums, the act started out as the Bloom Brothers. They have wowed Baby Boomers, members of Generations X and Y, and their millennial peers with catchy oldies-but-goldies renditions. Multigenerational audiences in Macau, fans of Manila’s variety TV shows, and party-goers in the Jersey-Big Apple area have been transported to more innocent times by their music – back when coke was drank instead of sniffed, and American Idol meant Elvis or Dionne.

LOCAL TALENTS

Poca

The Queen City of the South, Cebu, has been known to produce not only the juiciest fruits like mangoes but is also known for producing the very best talents from the region - especially singers. This is how she started to weave her dreams of becoming a singer. But because she had to fend for the family - she made both ends meet while taking courses - first as an undergraduate in Airline Management then shifting to a BS in Physical Therapy where Poca ended up in the busy metropolis that is Manila. Having a knack for singing - she frequented the comedy bars all over Metro Manila and made the Library sing-along bar in Malate her second home. That was where she was discovered and offered to be one of its nightly regular hosts. And thus, emerged the moniker POCA.

At the time, more and more singers were emerging in the entertainment industry — and one who came to be known as "Asia's Nightingale", Lani Misalucha became Poca's focal point - not just as an idol, but because they have the same style in singing. This was how Poca became to be known as Lani's premier impersonator and there would be times that Lani would guest in Poca's show and vice-versa. When an offer came to try singing out in the US, Poca becmw one of the highly recommended performers to sing in Edna's Ichiban, The Library and as word got around, Poca tourned the Bay Area. Poca has performed for visitng Philippine entertainers, as well as performing with known artists like Regine Velasquez and has guested in numerous TV shows. Asked Poca how life is in the US?, she replied, "It's not easy. But I was able to cope with the demands of being an entertainer away from home. What is important is that I am doing the thing I love most and this has been my passion since I dreamt of becoming a singer in my growing up years in Cebu. I am proud to say that I have gotten this far - in being a Filipino and showing the world what I've got!" By Pilar Mateo & Crispina Martinez-Belen

Arato Brothers Pre-teen Standouts

Touted as the youngest Fil-Am band anywhere they perform, the Arato Brothers could well be budding stars even before the oldest member turns 13. The classically trained siblings from Cherry Hill, New Jersey – keyboardist Jun-Gabriel, 12; lead guitarist Jay-Rafael, 11; and drummer Sean-Nathaniel, 9; and bassist Darwin-Miguel, 7 (soon to join his brothers) – are multi-genre performers. Every member contributes on vocals, and the band’s repertoire ranges from classic rock to dance music and progressive rock; an album of self-penned compositions is in the works. Formed in 2014 when the youngest sibling was preparing for kindergarten, the Arato Brothers are looking at many more years in the public eye as their talents are honed with every gig. The discerning audience at Fiesta In America should be their latest conquest.

Take the Stage

…and Take a Bow

Already veterans of the east coast Fil-Am concert circuit while still in their mid-teens, Take the Stage came out of Astoria, New York in 2013 with musical instruments blazing. Now, the brothers Hans and Shanne Garcia, and their cousin Juan Ezekiel Calonzo, are mainstays of festivals, dances, and charity events from Boston to Washington, DC. Though the act is much sought after, Take the Stage still finds the time to support charitable projects in the Philippines and around the New York metro area. Multi-instrumentalist lead singer Hans Garcia, 16; his brother and drummer Shanne, 12; and bassist/guitarist Ezekiel, also 16, have fronted for A-Listers such as OPM great Florante de Leon, noted crooner Marco Sison, and crowd favorite Ai Ai de las Alas. Take the Band’s swelling number of fans can expect another rousing performance at Fiesta In America 2016 – a clear path to the A List perhaps? 36  FIESTA IN AMERICA

ashion, undoubtedly, is a reflection of the social, economic, political, and cultural changes and that while it mirrors the changing trends of our daily life, it simultaneously conveys the apogee of modernization and reinvention of styling perspectives. The standard paradigm of certain epoch may be regarded as discordant to be adapted by current age but trendsetters won’t have second thoughts in embracing something novel just to be different from among the rest. Take for instance the ever well-liked and archetypal Gatsby-look that set an unprecedented trendy movement during the mid-1920s… the most significant era in American history that induced cultural dynamism. This year, in time for the celebration of the 18th (Philippine) Fiesta in America, the annual production presentation of the 8th People’s Ball opted to recreate the lavish and ostentatious lifestyle of the bygone Roaring 20s Era… a decade of exuberance and high spirited revelry when every single event was imbued with deafening music, seemingly endless carousing, and deafening excitement while exceedingly garbed in the fullest scope of sophistication and elegance. Market Report/Future Forecast BROUGHT TO YOU BY DEPARTMENT OF TRADE AND INDUSTRY

DTI Secretary Lopez to accelerate MSME development Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon M. Lopez has vowed to further intensify support to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by providing incentives and other assistance to create more jobs, produce cheaper goods, and cut poverty. The new Secretary said the Department is studying the kind of incentives that will be given to enterprises that have adopted the inclusive business (IB) model. Enterprises adopting the IB model incorporate poor communities into their core business. “When we say we will prioritize [inclusive businesses], we mean all possible help, although we have to review what kind of incentives will be provided to them. We have to find out if the grant of fiscal incentives will make a difference or if it’s relevant,” Lopez said. The focus of President Rodrigo R. Duterte is uplifting the poor and their quality of life through entrepreneurship and helping MSMEs, Lopez said. It is in line with the President’s 10-point economic agenda promoting agricultural and rural enterprise productivity. To do this, the Department plans to accelerate further the rollout of Negosyo Centers, shared service facilities (SSFs), and training for MSMEs. As DTI Secretary, he committed to continue to empower and inspire MSMEs, champion business, and at the same time advocate the rights of consumers. Businessmen More Bullish Local entrepreneurs are more confident in their outlook for economic environment, the Q2 2016 Survey (BES) conducted by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) showed. According to the survey, business confidence index increased to 48.7% from the previous quarter’s 41.9%. “This indicates that more businesses are optimistic about the country’s economic prospects for the second quarter of the year compared to that in the previous quarter (January to March),” the BSP reported. The confidence index is computed as the percentage of firms that answered in the affirmative less the percentage of firms that answered in the negative with respect to their views on a given indicator. Businessmen based their optimism on election-related spending leading to the May 9 elections, continued increase in the volume of production, the summer season’s increased business, and the enrollment period.

2016 WORKSHOP PREVIEW

RETIREMENT! INVEST IN A FRANCHISE BUSINESS NOW

Franchising remains one of the best business options amid the global economic slowdown. Department of Trade and Industry Undersecretary Zenaida Maglaya has noted that franchising is a secure way to a successful business due to the availability of technology, formula, and the process, giving the entrepreneur an advantage since "he or she will not necessarily start from scratch." Filipino franchisers are expanding their customer base across the rest of Asia, in the United States, in Europe, and in Africa. Filipino brands continue to create waves in the international franchise arena, proving that the local franchise industry is fast becoming one of the country’s biggest dollar earners. In a report by Philippine Franchises.com, businesses which were listed as successfully entering overseas markets with their uniquely Pinoy brands were home-made Filipino food brands Potato Corner, Sweet Corner, Aquabest, Figaro Coffee Company, Julie’s Bakeshop, and non-food service brand Lay Bare Waxing. Even the longest-running noontime TV program “Eat Bulaga! is franchised and can now be viewed in 48  FIESTA IN AMERICA

Indonesia. This is the first Philippine variety show to be franchised by another country.

Potato Corner opened its first international outlet in Indonesia in 2006 and has since expanded into 57 outlets. Today it has 31 outlets across the United States, can also be found in Malaysia, Thailand Australia and Panama. Next in line for the potato company are outlets to open in Canada, Singapore, Russia, Botswana and Mexico. As I was writing this article, I saw a colleague in Facebook gleefully posting a message that Potato Corner is now opening its brand in Panama City! The Sweet Corner food cart can now be seen in Australia and will soon open outlets in the Middle East. Figaro Coffee Company now serves coffee lovers in China, Saudi Arabia, Papua New Guinea and Malaysia with its flavored coffee beans. Figaro currently has 7 stores overseas: two in Malaysia, two in China, two in Papua New Guinea and one in

By Professor Enrique Soriano

Saudi Arabia. There’s a deal that would allow the Figaro Coffee Company to expand its presence in the Gulf Cooperation countries and establish up to 40 stores in countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman over the next 10 years. Cebu’s pride, Julie’s Bakeshop, known as the largest bakeshop chain in the Philippines with close to 500 bakeshops, has opened in Jakarta and Canada and will soon open in Abu Dhabi. What is Franchising? Franchising is a contractual relationship. The Franchisor and the Franchisee each make commitments and agree to operate under certain constraints, [making up] the structure of a franchise relationship. There are a number of elements critical to its effectiveness as the foundation for an expanding franchise network. What’s more important is to look at different options that are in keeping with your strengths and interests. Given that it will be a long-term partnership, go for a brand that you believe in and has a product or service that you know will work in your area, says Vic Perea founder and CEO of Mr. Softy Ice

Cream, Inc. in a speech he delivered recently during Mr. Softy’s Franchise conference in Astoria Hotel in Ortigas Center. Mr. Softy is gearing for an aggressive expansion campaign by targeting a total of 500 stores in 2020. At a franchise fee of P500,000, it is eyeing the Fil-Am market, especially those planning to retire in the Philippines in the next 3 to 5 years. Currently, Mr. Softy has close to 90 stores with half of these stores owned by newly minted entrepreneurs cum Franchisees. Invest in Franchise Brands With a Proven Track Record With a regional franchise, you are bringing a Pinoy brand into the international spotlight. And you do not even have to invest a significant amount. Some Filipino Franchise brands are very affordable and can range from $10,000 to $150,000. Another bright option is for you to use your retirement funds. This has become one of the most popular ways over the last few years to finance franchises. There are specialized financial companies that will set up the ability for you to invest your retirement funds into your business.

Retirement and Entrepreneurship are a Perfect Mix The Philippines is a destination filled with natural wonders, a vibrant culture and ample opportunities to enjoy life plus a relatively low cost of living coupled with affordable medical care and housing options. I am always asked the same question by those who would still opt to stay in the US. Would a USbased Fil-Am retiree still get to enjoy the benefits of being an entrepreneur? My answer is a resounding yes! In the event that you chose to stay or retire in

49  FIESTA IN AMERICA

North America, or you are still working but you want to take advantage of the opportunity to establish your franchise business already, there are solutions to your concerns. To prepare your transition from employment to entrepreneurship, there are franchise management firms in the Philippines that will help you set up and manage your venture. These service providers will train you as well as your appointed manager in the Philippines. The relationship is purely arm’s length with regular disclosure protocols. When you are confident and ready to take over the operations of the franchise business, the management firm will prepare a turnover plan so your shift in opera-

tions will be seamless. The rationale and the objective of having a professional third party franchise management provider is to avoid a common scenario where a Fil-Am buys a franchise and then falls into the trap of having relatives and friends mismanage operations. The ultimate goal is for the Fil-Am franchisee to work as much or as little as he or she wants with a secure income. To learn more about the mechanics of this great opportunity on how to enjoy your retirement years in the Philippines, I am inviting you to attend the “Franchising Business Opportunity Investment Forum” on August 1314, 2016 to be held at Meadowlands Expo Center,

Secaucus, New Jersey USA. I will be sharing franchise opportunities and will be more than happy to let you in on the secret, and the ways and means to realize your dream. Editor’s note: Prof. Eric Soriano will conduct a workshop on Philippine franchising opportunities at Fiesta In America on August 13 and 14. He is a National Agora Awardee for Excellence in Marketing Education by the Philippine Marketing Association. He teaches global marketing at the Ateneo Graduate School of Business, chairs the marketing cluster, and heads the business school’s real estate program

2016 Hermano & Hermana Mayor Dr. Kits Reyes & Cora Reyes

Initially, because of her innate compassion and dedication to the career she so dearly loved, Cora taught she was merely “married” to her profession but while still in Manila, in one of her hospital visits to her sister who was then confined, Cora met her sister’s attending physician, Dr. Francisco Reyes and that started the relationship to bloom. They tied the knot in St. Michael’s Church in 1970 and solemnly vowed with a mutual commitment to dedicate all their lives in building a happy and ideal family. Kit and Cora are blessed with 4 children, who also have children of their own: Carlo Virgilio, Michael Dane, Robin Francis and Pier. The couple’s professions are consistently equipped with unparalleled commitment to the service of their community and fellowmen. Indefatigable Cora sees to it that she’s personally involved in various service-oriented community activities and medical missions. An influential and benevolently endowed female leader born gifted with her innate humanitarian concern ably armed with a keen sense of responsibility and empathy…with dazzling knowlegeability about utilizing her ardent vision for change and innovation while Kit, now retired, relentlessly provides unconditional support to all undertakings his wife tackles.

2016 SPOTLIGHT: MINDANAO

This year we focus on the southern region of the Philippines. An open invitation for you to try the spicier side of Filipino cuisine and experience activites not usually associated with the Philippines, white water rafting anyone? BUTUAN - The people of Butuan have a favorite quote, “In the Beginning, there was no Philippines, but there was Butuan.” This belief adds some credence to claims of evidence of the existence of Butuan as once a Kingdom. Historians who thirst for ancient history will find Butuan’s rich cultural heritage a reason to visit the place. Butuan is also claimed to be the gateway in Northern Mindanao towards the best and interesting places in Mindanao. Here are some of the things you can do in the historic city of Butuan, or should I say Kingdom of Butuan: Visit the Balangay Shrine in Barangay Libertad, which shelters one of the authentic relics of balanghai, a big sailing boat used by our ancestors to navigate the vast seas for trading with other early photo credit: www.thephilippines.com.ph civilizations in Asia and Polynesian Islands. Then, visit the Butuan National Museum and look for the replica of the 13th century solid gold image of a Hindu-Malayan deity— the Golden Tara. Unleash your sense of adventure at Delta Discovery Park in Barangay Bonbon. This park offers a 1.3 kilometer of zip line that would give you the ultimate adrenalin rush. While in Bonbon, stop at the freshwater Bequibel Shell Midden and the Bitor Shell Midden and be amazed at these prehistoric shells that dates back 7000 years during the Neolithic period. Visit the Bood (Bud) Promontory and Eco Park, which is believed to be the site of the first mass. One of the controversies surrounding this area is where the first mass took place. Was it in Limasawa in Leyte or here in Masao, Butuan? This park serves as a commemoration site of the first planting of the cross and the Mass led by Ferdinand Magellan on the Easter Sunday in March 31, 1521. Located at the heart of Butuan City is the Guingona Park. This site is where the flag of the Philippines in Mindanao was first formally raised in January 17, 1899. Right next to Guingona Park is the St. Joseph Catheral. While you’re at it, visit another historic continued on page 68 66  FIESTA IN AMERICA

spot; the Banza Church Ruins built in 1625 by the Recollect Friars that was burned down by Moro pirates in 1753. The only remnant left now is the bell tower clad by a tree. After your tour, have a halo-halo break at SnackBreak in Buenavista, famous for their halo-halo. As one travel enthusiast points out, the halo-halo was “heaven,” and it was “the best halo-halo” he ever tasted. Leave some appetite for dinner and go to Baron’s and enjoy their seafood dinner. And I mean, “enjoy!” Oh and don’t forget to order the local fish called Gingaw. Their grilled seafood will leave you asking for more. So get there early because Baron’s is only open for dinner and they stay open only until their supplies last.

CAGAYAN DE ORO Cagayan de Oro is the Philippine’s Whitewater Rafting Capital. The only city in the country that offers rafting year-round. The Cagayan de Oro River has a river depth, incline and rock formations that make rafting a fun and exciting experience. A totally different experience from whitewater rafting, experience whitewater kayaking, which brings you thrill and excitement more intense than rafting because you are on your own. Experience these water thrills in Cagayan de Oro River. More adventures await you at the Macahambus Hill Cave and Gorge where you will find an awesome view from the 120-meter long Sky Bridge suspended 120 feet above the ground; then take the photo credit: www.maayalegaspi.com 120-meter breathtaking zipline. If you care for more action-packed experience and fun, the Jatico Adventure Park offers a five-course zipline, ATV rides, and hiking trails. Don’t miss the Mapawa Park for its waterfalls, rappelling and trekking. If you want a more subdued experience, visit the Museo de Oro and learn and understand local customs and traditions. Or accustom yourself with the people of Northern Mindanao at the Museum of Three Cultures and the Gardens of Malasag Eco-Tourism showcasing tribal houses amidst nature trails. Visit the Macabalan Port where General Douglas MacArthur landed in 1942 enroute to his escape to Australia during World War II, and take a photo of the biggest military cap in the world. Remember to visit the centuries-old stained glass panels of the gothic St. Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral. Close by is the tree-lined Segundo Gaston park, a relaxing haven in the city. The month of August is the celebration of the Kagay-an Festival or Higalaay Festival in Cagayan de Oro. The festival is a weeklong festivity filled with a series of colorful, culturally rich, carnival-like event, and is dedicated to its patron, St. Augustine. The highlight of the celebration is the Golden Float Parade. Cagayan de Oro has something for every curious traveler. This happy place could very well leave you with a glow on your face from the exhilaration of a great adventure. If this does not entice you to visit Cagayan de Oro, perhaps the fact that this is the hometown Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach, might do the job. Pia’s crown has also officially placed Cagayan de Oro on the Miss Universe map.

BUKIDNON - If you are an outdoor adventure enthusiast, the highland Province of Bukidnon, bounded by forest reserves and mountain ranges is the perfect travel destination for you. Bukidnon's tourist attractions include eco-adventure activities such as mountain climbing, trekking, rappelling, trail hiking, river tubing and many more. It may not be your first stop, but the Dahilayan Adventure Park is Bukidnon’s most popular tourist destination, located in the Municipality of Manolo Fortich. Once hyped as the longest dual zipline in Asia, the 840-meter zipzone has been the park's main attraction. You will hear the cliché, “You've never been to Dahilayan if you've never experienced the zipline thrill.” If zipline thrill is not your “thing,” Bukidnon's newest eco-adventure destination, Kampo Juan, offers the Philippine's first, and probably the only, Anicycle where one can ride a bicycle across a 600-feet cable hanging on a 100-feet deep ravine. There is also a hanging bridge, which spans a length of 360 feet on a ravine 200 feet above a river. Rappelling and paramotoring are other activities you can enjoy at Kampo Juan. If you are a lover of high places then you are up for a real-life adventure of mountain climbing in Bukidnon where four of photo credit: Kyle Jennermann - www.becomingfilipino.com Philippine’s ten highest peaks are located: Mt Dulang-Dulang, Mt. Kitanglad, Mt. Dalatungan, and Mt. Maagnaw. If you don’t have the stamina and not enough time to explore these peaks, go for the shorter climb at Mt. Capistrano in Malaybalay and Mt. Palaopao in Sumilao. Bukidnon also boasts of a rich cultural heritage and traditions as well as breathtaking nature. If you happen to visit Bukidnon in February or March, experience the Kaamulan Festival, named as the most authentic festival in the country. Enjoy nature as you follow the hiking trail at CEDAR’s protected forest reserve. Enjoy the waterfalls along the way on your trek. Take a plunge in any of the five popular spring resorts in Maramag. Visit Barangay Guinoyuran where you will find the cleanest and greenest inland body of water in Northern Mindanao. Here you can rent a floating bamboo hut and relax as it floats in the middle of the lake. If you want more of nature’s wonders, visit the Musuan Peak, which is actually an active volcano, and relax as you gaze at an awesome view of the farmlands, Pulangui River and mountain ranges. This may not be your final stop, but the magnificent pyramid chapel should be in your list to visit when you are in Bukidnon. This monastery and home of the Benedictine Monks, is a popular destination for those who seek peace of mind and serenity of the soul and spirit. This is also the most popular wedding destination in Bukidnon. Here’s a fun fact about Bukidnon: Manny Pacquiao was born in Kibawe, Bukidnon. So for your next vacation, consider traveling to Mindanao. Visit the Kingdom of Butuan, home of the Golden Tara; Cagayan de Oro, hometown of Miss Universe, Pia Wurzback; and Bukidnon, birthplace of Manny Pacquiao. And if you have more time, visit Davao, the hometown of our current President.

2015 People’s Ball Highlights As in previous editions, the 7th annual People΄s Ball (2015) was a dazzling showcase of beloved Filipino traditions such as the grand, costumed rigodon de honor, punctuated with snippets of contemporary popular culture like talent-and-beauty pageants, a staple of town fiestas across the Phillipine Islands. Stately dances and pageants may be fleeting glimpses into the Filipino psyche, but they also provide insights into Filipino Americans΄ self-image and what they perceive to be their roles in their second homeland. Meet our multicultural show hosts Grace Calvelo Rustia

“Co-hosting Fiesta In America has been one of the highlights of my personal and professional involvement in some of the most significant multicultural communities of the mid-Atlantic region. This is my fourth year of co-hosting the event, and each past Fiesta In America edition has carved a special place in my heart. I have hosted numerous Fil-Am, mainstream and multicultural events. As the former voice of Pan Asian Radio in Philadelphia, I have come across some of the most incredibly talented people. Still, I never cease to be amazed at the scope and depth of international and local talents that Fiesta In America’s multicultural show continues to offer. Top-billed stars of Philippine film, television and music are the high point of the show. However, unheralded musicians and dance troupes from both coasts of the United States, plus cultural dancers representing various nations, are superb Fiesta In America attractions in their own right. Through Fiesta In America, these undiscovered gems radiate their brightest sparkle.” Grace Calvelo Rustia is an award-winning broadcaster, TV personality and community leader.

Year after year, this unique gathering of trade exhibits, cultural festivals, concerts and food expositions showcases the very best of Filipino, Asian and Latino traditions, culture and heritage. I have seen the growth of the Fiesta in America over the last decade and truly enjoy this important venue, and how it fosters greater understanding, mutual respect within the multicultural communities of the Greater New York-New Jersey area. With a very important presidential election ahead, it is my hope that this year’s Fiesta in America will be a shining example and beacon of hope for unity throughout this great nation.
