Uç \Çä|àtà|ÉÇ bÇÄçAAA At this year’s Regional Directors’ Conference in New York, FGI attendees from throughout the world were excited and privileged to get to meet two amazing women who changed the face of online shopping worldwide: Alexis Maybank and Alexandra Wilkis-Wilson of Gilt Groupe. Alexis and Alexandra both met while obtaining MBAs from Harvard. They founded Gilt in 2007 and are often featured in The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Fortune, Financial Times, InStyle, Vogue and The New York Times. Their entrepreneurial story of success has been told on ABC News, CBS Sunday Morning, Inside Edition and many others. Alexis began her career in Silicon Valley. She was one of the initial 40 employees of eBay. There she launched eBay Canada and eBay Motors. Alexandra spent three years working in investment banking at Merrill Lynch before blazing a trail up Fifth Avenue after business school working for Bulgari and Louis Vuitton. Maybank and Wilson have successfully brought the exclusivity and excitement of sample sales to a young, internet-savvy luxury fashion clientele. They have grown GILT to a five million member online shopping club worth over $1 billion in just four years. Their book, By Invitation Only, unwraps their personal story of how they organized and launched Gilt Groupe. The riveting tale includes the frantic first 24 hours and details GILT’s explosive growth and rise to prominence while providing advice on how aspiring entrepreneurs can do the same. By Invitation Only provides straight talk on how to build a start-up and negotiate the many conundrums that still face women in business such as balancing family life and work responsibilities. The book provides an insightful view into the fashion industry by providing a revealing portrait of key players like Zac Posen, Christian Louboutin, Valentino and many others.

Uxàáxç ]É{ÇáÉÇËá axã jÉÜÄw4 New York designer Betsey Johnson has built her long-standing career in fashion by following her own set of rules. Known for her celebration of the exuberant, the embellished and the over the top, Betsey has been rocking the fashion industry with her unique and original designs since the 1960’s. Her commitment to remain true to her one-of-a-kind vision has afforded Betsey continued success in an industry known for its fickleness. Her ability to change with the times while keeping her designs pure has not gone unnoticed. At the 1999 CFDA Awards, Betsey was presented The Timeless Talent Award created especially for her, which recognized her influence on fashion throughout her career. The year 2003 marked some exciting licensing endeavors for the company, taking Betsey’s signature prints and whimsy to new audiences with categories including handbags and lingerie. She continued this trend and has since added footwear, belts, eyewear, watches, costume jewelry, swimwear, leg wear, outerwear and a fragrance, thus effectively emerging as not only a clothing designer, but a top American Lifestyle brand, Betsey Johnson, both the woman and the label, is constantly moving forward and continues to keep a strong foothold in the fashion industry with no signs of letting up anytime soon. Word spread recently of her filing for bankruptcy. After speaking with Betsey at the FGI Regional Directors Conference in New York, she is actually happy and relieved for the filing. Seems a lifetime of fashion achievements can still lend itself to business challenges. After losing managing control over her retail stores (even though it was her name), Betsey’s hands were tied. She was only licensed to sell her fashions at her retail stores which were floundering. By filing, the stores are now closing, her name is now released and she is free to partner with whomever she chooses. Steve Madden has stepped up to back her and now her fashions can be seen everywhere from Macy’s to Bloomingdales. She even has a reality TV show airing soon on The Style Network following her, her daughter and grand-daughter in the zany world that is Betsey. It’s plain to see that Betsey’s enthusiasm, creativity and boundless talent have kept her at the forefront of fashion for the past 45 years and will keep her going for years to come!

exz|ÉÇtÄ W|ÜxvàÉÜá VÉÇyxÜxÇvx |Ç axã lÉÜ~ V|àç In May, FGI held its Regional Director’s Conference in New York City. Regional Director, Julie Fought, and Communications Chair, Jeanette Crutchfield, represented San Diego at this fact-filled (and fun!) seminar. The conference started with a cocktail reception at Material ConneXion. Sushi, wine and the most amazing textiles and materials were a fabulous greeting to the city of fashion! The next morning started with breakfast at the Conde Nast building followed by the guest speakers portion of the conference. Attendees learned all about the changes in the retail structure from Maggie Gilliam, president of Gilliam & Company; the excitement as well as pitfalls of starting an ecommerce business from the girls of Gilt Groupe; how to affect the mood and feelings of your clients from business feng shui master Debra Duneier, president/founder of EcoChi; blogs, bloggers, and blogging with popular bloggers Stacey Bewkes of Quintessence, Lisa Weiss of Exposed Zippers and Steven McClure of WeWant2ShootU.com. Strategizing meetings then commenced followed by the Awards dinner at the Cosmopolitan Club on the Upper East Side with the ever fabulous Betsey Johnson as guest speaker. The second day started the “meat and potatoes” portion of the conference with various workshops regarding the internet, social media, membership and event brainstorming and educational sessions.

a

Julie and Jeanette came home from the conference educated and super excited about what FGI San Diego can and WILL do in the future. With the support of New York and for that matter the international membership of FGI, there is without doubt that San Diego has some great things in store!
