Blonde bombshell Amanda Schull, the multi-talented actor and dancer, who first captivated our hearts as the breakout star in Sony Picture’s hit film Center Stage knows exactly what she is talking about. Becoming a professional ballerina is no easy feat and Amanda managed to master that domain, and become a successful actor, excelling at both. Proving that a dancer’s discipline pays off, she has most recently landed the lead role in Syfy’s new series, 12 Monkeys as Dr. Cassandra Railly, set to premiere on January 16th. Inspired by the 1995 film starring Bruce Wills, Brad Pitt, and Madeleine Stowe, 12 Monkeys follows the journey of a time traveler from the post-apocalyptic future who appears in present day on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will eventually decimate the human race with the help of Schull’s character, a brilliant doctor who is forced to choose between her idyllic life or joining the mission to uncover the dangerous conspiracy. “Dr. Railly is a virologist. Before working on the series I did as much research about

virology, viruses, contamination etc. as I possibly could. I watched quite a few documentaries about viruses, and doctors working in contaminated areas.” Approaching all of her roles in this way, Amanda describes she has created a technique she uses when first developing a new character, “that helps me to mold and create a person different from myself. I write a lot of notes, consider a lot of aspects of the person who is on the paper, and try to make the words jump off and into a realistic personification.” Graceful, charming, and illuminating onscreen, Amanda makes it look effortless, but from an early age she knew the value of perseverance and determination. Born and raised in Hawaii, Amanda started dancing at age four and studied ballet with John Landovsky of the Hawaiian State Ballet. “I loved growing up in Hawaii. I think I appreciate it more now that I am no longer living there. The beauty of the islands is breathtaking, and the energy of the people there is unlike anywhere else in the world.” It obviously was a great place to grow up, considering it groomed her to becoming a professional ballet dancer. Ballet really took off for her when she was accepted into and offered a scholarship to attend The Juilliard School, the world’s most prestigious performing arts conservatory yet chose instead to attend Indiana University. Regarding her choice, Amanda explains, “Choosing Indiana over Julliard was not a difficult decision for me. The Dance program at IU was much more classically focused than the program at Julliard, which is something I >>>

M A G A Z I N E ||

53

wanted to concentrate on. IU also had professors (like Violette Verdy) and visiting guest artists that I wanted to work directly with.” After two years at Indiana, she attended San Francisco Ballet’s summer program, which led to a scholarship to stay and study there in lieu of returning to Indiana. She eventually became a full-fledged company member in SFB, a dream come true for a ballet dancer, and it was only a year after dancing there that, at age 20, she would encounter her first taste of her new career. iscovered after a nationwide search, Amanda was chosen to be the lead in Center Stage, the chance of a lifetime.

I remember approaching it like any other job; working my hardest, showing up prepared, applying notes given to me, and attempting to create something interesting for people to watch. I remember thinking that I couldn’t believe that I was being paid to have such a great summer with such amazing people. I think it was a little surreal for me, which is probably a good thing. If I had thought about how incredible the opportunity was at the time, I probably would have been a little intimidated!”

It’s hard to believe someone fearless and focused like Amanda being intimidated by anything. She excelled in her role in Center Stage, which propelled her on to fame and recognition, and ended up leaving SFB to pursue acting full time. In the first few years of her acting career, she divulges that “I still identified myself more closely with dancers. It was an existence I spent an entire lifetime living. I think now that I spend so much time working in television and film, I lean more towards an actor’s identity. I don’t think I will ever classify myself strictly as a “non-dancer,” it will always be in my blood. People still remark that I move like a dancer when I’m not thinking about it, and I use my physical awareness to dictate the body language of every character I portray on film.” And on making the transition from dancer to actor, she admits that “One of the obvious obstacles I had to first overcome was that as a dancer we never speak! Being comfortable portraying a character through movement is very different from delivering lines in addition to embodying a character. Many of my early roles were dancers, so that was so close to home, it was easy for me to embody. When I started to take on characters that were much more unlike myself, I really had to work to develop a person who wasn’t similar to the real me.” cting clearly seems to utilize her many talents perfectly and thus far, she has had recurring and guest starring roles in various hit television shows including Two And A Half Men, The Mentalist, Psyche, Grimm, One >>>

Tree Hill, and Pretty Little Liars. On film she played the female leading role in Mao’s Last Dancer and had a scene opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in J. Edgar. Most recently, Amanda played recurring character, Katrina Bennett, on USA’s fan favorite show, Suits. Of which she slyly tells us Suit’s fans, “Regarding Katrina Bennett – I don’t think you have seen the last of her…” For young dancers looking to emulate Amanda’s amazing career, she offers this advice,

I think if a young dancer decides to pursue acting or dancing for film, they should remember that hard work and dedication really do go a long way. Get yourself into an acting class or two, and approach your next career with the same control and focus you did with dance.” The hard-working star still manages to find time to relax, decompress, and be inspired. Amanda loves to go walking and hiking with her dog, take ballet regularly, “which is a very cathartic form of relaxation and stress-relief for me,” and enjoys life as a foodie. “I am always trying out

new recipes and making meals for my family and friends. I love food, and I love to find new ingredients and learn about local flavors. In every new city or town I shoot, I find the local farmers market and buy great local dishes and produce.” Amanda reveals she finds inspiration everywhere, “Sometimes in the most unexpected places: music, art, architecture, nature, people, and especially dance, inspire me. I am also inspired on a daily basis by watching my fellow actors. I feel motivated when I read a great script, and I think, “I can’t wait to work on that character!” I also get motivated to work on projects through frustration. If I feel disappointed in my work, or myself it triggers me to do better with my next opportunity.” And she dishes that her burning desires are in “getting to work on great characters with great people. I look forward to every new role I get, discovering things about the character, and incorporating ideas from directors and creators.” Energetic, self-disciplined, and motivated-a director’s dream! manda tells us that in the future, “One thing I really would like to do would be to work on Broadway sometime in my life. I love the energy of a live audience, and I think the magic and the history of playing on Broadway would be thrilling.” It is no doubt that Amanda will light up the stage one day, and for now we can look forward to seeing her in a lead role starting in January.

By: Darcy Tharp he Jolene Collection family has been at the forefront of the Evening and Prom gown industry for the past twenty years. Starting as a small operation in the heart of the Garment District in Downtown Los Angeles, the company, which includes Jolene Collection and its sister line, Josh & Jazz, has grown to become a leading manufacturer and worldwide distributor of special occasion dresses, meeting the needs of special occasions, proms, and pageant participants everywhere. At the helm of the operation is Fred Zadeh, who comes from a long line of garment industry mavericks. Garnering inspiration from various sources, Fred looks forward to continuing the tradition that started many years ago. He named Jolene Collection and Josh and Jazz after his own children, Jolene, Joshua, and Jasmine, whose individual personalities are as unique as each line that he manufactures.

FMM: Where does your artistic influence come from? JC: It was a natural process for me. My father and grandfather were in this business and after graduating from college I just continued the tradition. FMM: When did you start making clothing? JC: 1990 FMM: Why did you call your latest collection Jolene Collection? JC: I named the collection after my younger daughter. We started that line in 2008/09 at the time of the recession. But because of the quality of the collection and the pricing we made it a successful business. FMM: Why did you call your first collection Josh and Jazz? JC: I named the collection after my oldest son and daughter. FMM: What do the Jolene Collection and Josh & Jazz lines represent? JC: Our Jolene Collection represents motherof-bride gowns and pageant gowns, as well as prom dresses and cocktail dresses. Josh & Jazz focuses on junior high & high school dances like homecoming and other special occasions. The line is popular for Sweet Sixteen parties and with the tween market as well. FMM: Do you believe social occasions are recession proof? JC: I believe people will always spend money for social occasions, and maybe make more price concessions during recession times. That’s when our merchandise excels because of the quality and the value of our price range.

68 ||

FAS HI O N

M A G A Z I N E || DEC - JAN 2015

FMM: Are you strictly wholesale or retail as well? JC: We are a wholesale company and like to see our retailers making money. FMM: How long is the process of putting together each collection and how many times during the year do you have to do this? JC: Eight months and we do it two times a year. FMM: Anything we should keep our eyes open for in the future? JC: Everything! As we continue to make dresses for our customers each year, we introduce new elements from our line that they appreciate, which keeps the styles fresh and exciting. We want to provide a product that retailers love to sell and their clients love to wear. FMM: How do you intend people to feel when wearing your pieces? JC: Gorgeous! FMM: What is the most challenging part of your job? JC: We would love to have more interaction with the consumer and the end user of our products. We would love to be able to hear their feedback first-hand. This is difficult to accomplish since we are manufacturers. FMM: What is your average price range? JC: Our dresses retail from $250.00 to $650.00.

opular wedding photographer Sergei Ivanov, a member of both the National Community of Photographers of Ukraine and the Association of Wedding Photographers of Ukraine and Russia, is well-known for his unique wedding style shoots incorporated with elements of art. After graduating from art school and working for various public and private companies, his passion for photography moved him into becoming a full-time photographer. He says that in art school he would dream about combining photography and computer technology into unique creations, and his work today shows that he has certainly accomplished that and more. Now Sergei has been doing artistic photography for over ten years, and today is known far beyond the borders of Ukraine for his style. He lives with his family in the small Ukrainian town of Khmelnitsky and spends most of his time teaching his techniques around the world. Speaking about his work, Sergei says, “Create with soul. I see the world a little differently. If you look closely, the world surrounding us is dreamlike and quite mystical. Be attentive to everything that surrounds you. If your eye catches something, don’t ignore it but capture it with your mind or your camera.”

Not just anyone can fill the aesthetic shoes of Quentin Tarantino or Banksy, but Adi Shankar has given such benchmark creatives a run for their money…both in the box office and on the billboards of the film industry. At the impressive age of just 29, Calcutta-born Shankar has not only been ranked #20 of the most powerful Indians by GQ Magazine, but has successfully taken the slot as youngest producer to open #1 at the US box office for his commercial independent film, THE GREY, featuring Liam Neeson. This critical-acclaimed feat impressed audiences and his already loyal counter-culture following. Adi’s personal brand (Adi Shankar Brand) is distinct in its approach to re-imagining filmmaking. Taking superhero hits like ‘Judge Dredd’ and ‘The Punisher’ to develop his own fascinating perspective behind the R-rated lens for a number of viral online bootlegs like: DREDD, JUDGE DREDD: #SUPERFIEND, and THE PUNISHER: #DIRTYLAUNDRY. There is no shortage of Hollywood names to keep Film Festival fans + online apostles addicted to the screen. Though violent + unauthorized, the crime dramas and action thrillers entice involvement from actors like: Gerard Butler (MACHINE GUN PREACHER), Brad Pitt (KILLING THEM SOFTLY), Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe (LONE SURVIVOR), Liam Neeson (A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES), Ryan Reynolds (THE VOICES), Thomas Jane + Ron Pearlman (THE PUNISHER: #DIRTYLAUNDRY), and Ryan Kwanten (VENOM: #TRUTH IN JOURNALISM). This is just the beginning. There’s no stopping the Shankar.

It’s been two years since you revealed DREDD, and you have an

audience on the edges of their seats awaiting the seven part DREDD

‘DARK JUDGES’ miniseries! From your Panel discussion at the recent New York Comic-Con 2014, please share some of the reactions

you received on its much-anticipated preview and soon-coming free internet release!

After the trailer, the initial reaction was divided. Some fans really liked my more satirical interpretation of the subject matter and others were

upset that I didn’t just replicate the tone of the film. As an artist I refuse to repeat myself, so I never once questioned my decision to deviate from my film. For the most part, those who have watched the mini-

series have given it a very positive response. I’ve also been getting a lot of fan mail from it, which is usually a good sign.

From Calcutta (India) to California (USA) you’ve made your way around the world experiencing many places in between such as Singapore,

London and Hong Kong throughout your course of growing up. You’ve

overcome the fears of childhood and the intimidations of the brave new

world (America) in education + Hollywood. Now touted as the “Tarantino of Bollywood” what portion of your Indian culture resonates with all

other countries’ influencers?

I’m Indian. All my formative influences come from being Indian, albeit

a selective part of the culture.

The mainstream of the film industry has carved a place in the lifestyle and pockets of many yet is changing rapidly. Knowing you are keenly aware of the transitional culture, can you share your thoughts on how the millennium is modifying movie-going and audiences of all ages.

Movies simply no longer have the cultural impact that they once did. Movies have become either homogenized happy meals for the masses or niche content made for a sub community. The true emerging art form is video on the internet. It’s shapeless at the moment, but that presents

an immense opportunity for the next generation of filmmakers to shape it and legitimize it.

Like the journalist for VENOM: TRUTH IN JOURNALISM, you aren’t too afraid to get your hands dirty while

mimicking violent, real life scenarios initiated or resolved

by villains + superheroes. The footage in your films are

wildly imaginative, often pulsing with bravery, justice

and twisted endings. It begs the question about your own principles + temperament concerning injustice and punishment? How would you deal with issues

in your own world that anger or abuse?

Like DIRTY LAUNDRY, is there a personal

message in your work that delivers the hope for justice toward abuse?

Yes, my intention is to use the art form to draw

attention to issues that otherwise get overlooked. My primary intention is just to create art, and my secondary intention is to combat Indian stereotypes, but I would say that this is my tertiary intention.

This is a great question that I do not know how to answer. I feel angry a lot of the time about the mass injustices

that occur in my home country of India. I’m angry that

“Film is dead as disco.” You have managed to

Creating an independent film requires departmental mastery + a commitment to the journey of the unexpected. What are some of the greatest industry pitfalls or emergencies you happened on or avoided when creating THE GREY?

What was the biggest risk in creating this blockbuster/boxoffice hit?!

As your fame sweeps the box offices, internet (social media) and cult followers across the USA, what significance do you hope that your unique bodies of work (films + shorts) are

making to modify the creativity + execution of filmmaking

in the industry? Are you purposefully attempting to alter the principles of viewers’ expectation?

Liam Neeson wasn’t considered an action star before we went into production. Many of our distribution partners

threatened to pull out of the picture if we cast him. Today he is one of 3 action stars left standing. Goes to show

My intention is to never replicate but to always innovate.

It’s the reason I’ve been very selective with my filmography. It’s the reason I don’t do sequels.

how quickly perceptions can change.

Having worked with some of the top names in acting, it’s

interesting to note that you’re working at this successful level

at only age 29. Was there ever a time when anything (or) anyone in Hollywood stardom rocked your cage?

Not really. I don’t mean this in an arrogant way. Everyone is just a person. I will say that

Ian Somerhalder is frighteningly good looking.

Having long term diligence and now a place for yourself in the Industry, you have more access to greater activity and

production. What avenues of media do you hope to use to

better execute future projects in comparison to the previous? The internet has been a nuclear warhead that was dropped over the world of film distribution. I need to become better adept at understanding the various sub communities that are forming in the dark corners of the internet everyday.

Miami is the sexiest city in the United States – prepare yourself. Where to stay: Don’t even consider staying anywhere other than South Beach if you’re under thirty – SoBe is completely walkable, you don’t need a car, youre steps away from the beach and the social scene is incredible. Budget travelers and 24-hour party people should check out the world famous Miami Beach International Hostel for non-stop insanity. Those looking for something more laid-back and chic should consider Miami Freehand or any of the stunning ultra luxurious beach-front hotels dotted along the main drag. Who to know: Club promoters know the best parties and prowl the streets and the beach looking for beautiful girls to invite, FREE. Where to party: On weekends top clubs are practically impossible to even get into unless you know someone that works there or youre a high roller willing to pay. Skip these crowded, wildly overpriced places and look for local pub crawls filled with young people. Pregame before you go out as drink prices can easily start at $20 each. What to eat: Nothing, you want to look good on the beach; just kidding, head to Puerto Sagua for the BEST FISH EVER in south Florida. What to wear: Thong bikini during the day and your shortest, tightest dress and highest heels and night.

Look for celebrities, get stuck in traffic and stroll along Venice Beach in the City of Angels. Weather is solid all year-round so dig out your shorts and flip-flops and take some time to relax in the Cali sun. Where to stay: Anywhere close to the major highways, traffic is notoriously terrible so stay anywhere close to an exit so you can get on and off the road quickly. Where to avoid staying: Downtown commercial district, it’s dead after 5PM. What to buy: Walk around on Melrose Ave for deal-friendly clothing boutiques and check out the AMAZING, high end clothes on the cheap at Buffalo Exchange and Crossroads Trading. What to see: Go through the winding Hollywood Hills on Runyon Canyon all the way up to see the Hollywood sign. Venice Beach is a dream, bring your rollerblades (!) and spend an afternoon there. Check out the Santa Monica Pier. Be a tourist on Hollywood Boulevard but look out for the crazies during the nighttime hours. What to bring: You need a rental car, don’t even attempt to visit the city without one.

How to get there: Don’t drive. You cant drive in the city. If youre on the East Coast take a train or the bus, otherwise hop on a flight. Avoid coming in the summer due to the high humidity and the crush of the crowds and the winter, due to the freezing, windy weather. Stay in Manhattan to see all the sights, stay in Brooklyn only if you’ve mastered the subway system and have a friend that will let you crash on their couch. For the adventurous: To get a four star hotel for under $200 (unheard of in NYC) book a room the day you arrive using the Hotel Tonight app and reel in the savings. What to bring: Sunglasses, your best scowl, an appetite for $2 pizza slices What to eat: Eating at a chain restaurant is sacrilege, check out Yelp and whatever cuisine you like to find the best place. Remember, everything is delivered here in case youre feeling lazy. Useful info: You need the following apps: TodayTix for cheap live shows, NYC Subway to figure out where youre going and Fever/Time Out NYC for cool, free stuff to do in the city.

FMM: What steps have you taken to build your portfolio? E: The most important way to have an interesting portfolio is to find good photographers. Then I try to be inspired by all which surrounds me in order to realize beautiful creations. FMM: In your opinion what is the startup cost for a makeup artist? E: The most important cost for a make-up artist is their materials, but especially the brushes. To realize beautiful things it is necessary to have good tools in your hand. I think that my case with brushes has to be worth 1000€ (just brushes). FMM: How do you build a diverse kit to accommodate all skin types when doing freelance work? E: The work of the complexion is the most important, and it needs an important range of products. Indeed all skins do not have the same color, and especially do not have the same tint (there are more yellowish skin tones or more pinkish skin tones). It is then necessary to have some foundation cream of every tint in order to make mixtures. FMM: What are some challenges of men’s makeup application? E: For men the work is fast because we are simply going to conceal the imperfections.

FMM: What are some of your favorite products you use regularly and can’t live without? E: My favorites are: Crème de gloss by MAC cosmetics, Soft & Gentle by Mac cosmetics to realize nice lights on the face, and the new brand, ELLE Make up, and the lipstick ELLE which are the best on the market. FMM: Do you have your own ingredients? E: One Oils Nature (very moisturizing) which I use to clean faces or to remove make-up. FMM: What types of primers do you recommend for oily skin? E: The base from Sephora is not expensive and works very well. FMM: How do you match makeup for freckled skin? E: First I work in a very light complexion to see the transparency, and for the color I use warm tones such as copper-colored, orange-colored, red, pumpkin, and also some greens. FMM: How do you sanitize your makeup kit? E: With some shower gel, shampoo, or with “the stain remover, “ a product used to remove spots which is very useful for traveling- I always have it with me. >>>

FMM: Do you mostly take creative directions or photographer directions or make your own suggestion as well? E: It depends on the project but next month I will create my first photography session where I organize everything. The shoot will be in a hotel. FMM: What tips do you have in getting top editorial work? E: I contact a lot of magazines, and with all the photographers who work with me, my social connections continue to grow. FMM: Do you do any bridal work? E: Yes, I do a few FMM: Any resume building tips for our audience to stand out in the industry? E: The most important are to respect the work of the whole team and remember that the social view in this domain matters for about 50% of the work. A good impression on a shoot means that you will be recommended for another job. I am often told that my good mood and smile are pleasant. Thus, it is necessary to be smiling, natural, and to share.

FMM: How do people sign up for classes with you? E: I am teaching in three schools, but I also practice for private individuals at home. The services with private individuals are booked via my site; they contact me, and we meet to discuss their wishes and needs. I have also created a portfolio of training with all the techniques to reproduce at home what they learned in class. FMM: Will you teach online classes in the future? E: Yes, it is a current project.
