ecently we had a discussion here at MOST about what makes a good photograph. I wanted to talk about photography in this note to you, and it took me back to that staff discussion. When we had talked about it, we discussed components of the picture, light, subject, composition, focus, etc. But how do we decide if a picture is good from an aesthetic position? Photography is a complicated art. It takes diligence, practice, and a good dose of OCD. In photography every detail matters. The composition must be in balance with the scenery, and colors have to be used in just the right way. Background or scenery, and one must always be mindful of capturing some unintentional object that might be interpreted the wrong way. I remember when I was growing up we lived in a small town and most of our shopping was done through catalogs. And of course Sears and Roebucks was one of the most popular (it was the 70’s). One edition came in the mail and a model wearing boxers shorts inadvertently was “advertising” a little too much. Sears tried to get them back, but I doubt that happened. The wonder of photographs lies in what can they can elicit in us. When I fall in love with a photograph I do for reasons that are emotional. When a photographer looks at a picture there may be an emotional reaction but also an appreciation for the art of capturing the shot. The art of photography requires many things, exposure compensation, lenses, resolution, lighting, angles, it involves models, maybe animals, babies, or athletes. One sometimes is trying to capture something that is moving or make something appear that it is moving. There are so many variations in photography that it is impossible to list or describe all of the possible components necessary to make photograph memorable. So, can we put parameters or grades on a picture for its beauty, its appeal, its emotional impact? One may love a photo because of its meaning. A precious picture can be slightly out of focus, imperfect, but it has captured a loved one’s smile; it earns a frame. Beauty,

appeal, value come from the meaning it wakes in the viewer, the memories flashed back upon or possibly dreams and possibilities. There is an association that wins one over, an association to something memorable, a time in one’s life, or the people that one associates with the memory. Of course the point of a photograph may be to incite, or stir a viewer to action. If a photo appeals, it is because one is being led by memory, meaning or feeling. No, we cannot define a list of things that make a photograph esthetically beautiful, a beauty that is characterized because of the emotions it evokes is obviously subjective. And I will disagree with the old axiom, beauty is in the eye of the beholder no beauty is in the heart of the beholder. I hope that as you read through this issue you find beauty that surprises you, or maybe a new subject of interest that you had not considered. More than that, I hope as look at a picture you like, you think about the meaning it has to you, why you paused and studied it further. Was it a face, bold colors, that perfect dress, a location or hair style? As you read through this issue you will find we are focusing on the cornerstone of our magazine brand, stellar photography. We are focusing on capturing your imagination and stirring up any hot (see Burning Man layout) or cold (Siberian feature) meanings. Does our cover story with Danish pop, dance and R&B singer and songwriter, Medina inspire you, or make you reminiscent of your garage band days? “On the third day of the Burning Man Festival we decided to wait until the afternoon to start shooting. While we were walking through the dessert looking for some nice vehicles or objects, a sandstorm started suddenly, and we thought this is it. You could not even see one meter in
front of you, but then the sun started to come out intermittently, and we shot in those short moments when we had sun. In the background you could still see the sandstorm, and the short moments of sun gave us perfect lighting for the images. It was the end of the day which brought my favorite images from the Burning Man shoot.” Michael Muenzing has spent most of his professional life as a director and producer in music. Born and educated in Frankfurt, Germany he grew up traveling the world as part of a family

that produced world syndicated music. His trademark during the 1990s was a danceable, keyboard-drum pop sound that blended musical styles such as funk, house, and hip hop. Together with his partner Luca Anzilotti, he created the project SNAP in the 90’s and songs like “The Power” and “Rhythm is a Dancer” peaked at #1 on both the US Billboard and UK Single Charts. “Rhythm is a Dancer” was the top selling record in Europe in 1992. Since 1990 SNAP has sold over 20 million albums and 100 million singles worldwide. Michael has been honored with numerous music awards like Echo, Ascap Songwriter of the Year, and earned more than 200 Platinum and Gold Records and many other dance music awards around the world. Besides music, his other great passion has always been for constructing emotional images, which he accomplishes through photography, and he has shot everything from advertising and fashion, to portraits and places all over the globe.

Having started her career in 2006, Medina released her 2007 debut album, “Tæt på” (“Up Close”). Medina’s singles quickly topped Danish charts in 2009 with commercial success from her sophomore album, peaking platinum for“Kun for mig” (“You and I”), “Ensom” (“Lonely”), “Velkommen til Medina” (“Welcome to Medina”), and “Vi to” (“The Two of Us”), approving her embrace for collaboration and fame on international charts. Worldwide fame came with Medina’s successful English-language releases out in 2010 with “Welcome to Medina” and again in 2012 with “Forever.” Both only increased her visibility after winning Best Danish Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards (2009, 2011) and an impressive six “of the Year” awards (including Danish: Female Artist, Album, New Name, Hit, Songwriter, and Producer (with “Providers”) of the Year). In between these releases, “For Altid” (“Forever”—:Labelmade:, 2011) marked her fourth album and title track which demonstrated staying power as each single held their place from number one to top ten.

“Tæt på - Live” (“Up Close”) was released in March of 2014 with 16 live tracks from Medina’s early first album favorites, as well as the February 2014 urban hip-hop “Arrogant” EP release with Danish producers, the Pitchshifters. Making appearances and performances at the yearly Danish Music Awards and The Voice (Danmarks Hitstation, The U.S. equilavant of I Heart Radio). MEDINA I love my sleep. 8-11 hours most days!! 6am is just about not wanting the night to ever end! I like that feeling too sometimes!

MEDINA I feel safe anywhere in the world! I’m a bit of a globe trotter and traveled most of the world before 15, so I’ve learned how to keep my self entertained no matter where I am. I feel at home when I’m on the road.

MEDINA I can be such a stubborn biatch sometimes, but I’ve learned how to be better at letting stupid sh*t go ;) My hardest thing to cope with being me is definitely when someone’s got a mean tongue. It’s so hard for me to understand why some ppl out there wants to bad mouth other ppl! I’m still in a learning process about not having to argue with the idiots! Really want to but in reality it’s just a pity for them that they are so insecure they wanna trash others around them. I’m learning to let go. I’m extremely sensitive and open so I don’t have a hard time expressing my self. To anyone.
IM NOT GOING TO LET YOU IN MOST Your emotional pet peeves that are cause for reservation?
MEDINA I’m extremely open.. Yet extremely reserved. I just mind my own business and take care of myself. I have to.. You never know where the next back stabber walks round the corner! I keep to my friends and family. Let’s just say I’ve learned the hard way. 90
