Gucci’s 90th

Melissa Maynard

Openings With 2011 being the 90th anniversary of the luxury House of Gucci, the new “Forever Now” campaign will launch, along with the Gucci Artisan Traveling Tour. Their artisans will be touring across America this month to show customers exactly how these handbags are created. By bringing in artisans from the factory in Florence, customers will be able to see the craftsmanship that is put into the design as they hand-stitch handles, assemble bamboo tassels and hand emboss customers initials, which reinterprets the bamboo bag from the 40s. It takes approximately 13 hours to make and has admittedly become an iconic bag for the brand. The Artisan Corner tour arrives in America on April 19th, where it will stay open for two days at Gucci San Francisco on Stockton Street. On April 22nd, the corner moves to Beverly Hills, followed by Chicago on April 26th, and its final destination will be at the Gucci Fifth Avenue Flagship in New York City on April 29th. -Amy Helliwell

Chicago fashion lovers were excited to hear about this year’s launch of The Chicago Fashion Incubator (CFI), a month-long event which supports local designers. Located on the 5th floor of the 900 Shops on Michigan Ave., CFI consisted of two spaces: one for retail shopping and one for fashion events. These spaces acted as a pop-up shop to showcase six Chicago designers’ collections. Until April 18th, the store was open for shopping and had regular events for local fashion supporters to attend. “What is so special about the 900 Shops is their support of local talent. They gave the Chicago Fashion Incubator Designers a platform to not only sell their collections in the store, but also show their lines at events in a beautiful separate space,” said designer Lara Miller. The 2010 chosen designers were Christina Fan, Donaldo Smith, Jonnie Rettele, Leah Fagan, Miriam Cecilia Carlson, and Stephanie Kuhr. – Emily Ekern

The sister act shop is on the move! Co-owners and Chicago natives Ashley and Allison Zisook are opening their latest Sofia store on Chicago’s renowned Oak Street this April. The store’s items are all handpicked from various world-wide collections. With added inspiration from the two sister’s drastically different fashion styles and backgrounds, the new 3,000 sq. ft. location packs the punch with vintage designers including Yves Saint Laurent, Oscar de la Renta, Chanel, Gucci, Fendi, and Valentino, to name a few. Between these noted designers and the exclusive array of up-and-coming designers, Sofia’s style fits into any wardrobe! -Anna Lautmann factio-magazine.com | Factio Magazine Spring 2010

Meeting Ágatha Ruíz de la Prada in Cancún Ágatha Ruíz de la Prada, the internationally renowned fashion designer, made her first trip to Cancún to participate with Mexican designers Pineda Covalin, David Salomon, Daniel Espinosa and Erika Flores in a show that kicked off a new tourism campaign called “Cancún and the Treasures of the Caribbean.” Before the show, Factio had the chance to talk to the colorful designer about how she got started in this field. We asked her about coming from a family with eight generations of architects, what inspires her and what most people don’t know about her. FAcTIo MAGAZINe: Tell us how you got started as a designer. ÁGATHA rUIZ De LA PrADA: I started in the beginning of the 80s in Madrid and at that time there was something called La Movida Madrileña and it was one of the magic periods. In every city there is a period that is one of the best periods of the city, and the “Movida” was one of the most exciting moments in the history of Madrid. I remember Andy Warhol coming to Spain, to Madrid and he stayed here for one week. Madrid was so influenced by New York that it was a big party for a week! FM: What inspires you as a designer? ÁGATHA: At the beginning, I was very much inspired by contemporary art. My father, an architect, was the best collector of contemporary art in the 60s and 70s in Spain, so I was very much influenced by that. FM: What is your design process? ÁGATHA: Now I have a big team and we are working with all kinds of things. I even have a collection of security doors and last year I launched a collection of tweezers with Tweezerman in New York. For example, we did an opening in Madrid for Posters. Last year we did 12. I do a lot of things with graphic design for book covers and such. In C Colombia, I will be designing a garden for the first time in my life. I’m working with natural flowers and it’s going to be a mystery how it turns out because it depends on so many things, including the weather! I have a very funny job because it’s always different. FM: What do you think about chicago? ÁGATHA: Chicago is an amazing city for architecture. It was one of my dreams to go there because I come from a family of architects. If I would have been one, I would have been the 9th generation of architects. I know that Chicago is the best city for architecture in the world! FM: You are a fashion architect. ÁGATHA: Yes. I am a frustrated architect, but I try to do as much architecture with fashion as I can. FM: How would you like to be remembered as a designer? ÁGATHA: I would like to be remembered as a very colorful designer and I would like to be remembered as someone who was very interested in the environment. I have been in the green party all my life. I am obsessed with that. I hope the future of fashion has a lot to do with ecology and with ethics, also. I would never do a collection with animals or with furs. FM: What is something people don’t know about you? ÁGATHA: I think you have to have your little mysteries, no? If all your life is public, it’s horrible. I live in Spain with a very powerful journalist and he has a lot of powerful enemies. So when you have a lot of powerful enemies, you have to be very good because anything you do can be known and go against you, so at the end you become very conventional. -Melissa Maynard *Photos by Factio Media

Falling for Phillip Lim Phillip Lim made a personal appearance in Chicago at Nordstrom on Thursday, March 18th. Chicago’s young fashion crowd gathered at the Nordstrom on Michigan Avenue for the chance to meet the fabulous designer who stole their hearts when he debuted his first collection at New York Fashion Week in 2005. He also received first place by Fashion Group International in the Women’s Designer ‘Rising Star’ category in 2006. Event attendees shopped Lim’s spring/summer looks while models rotated around the DJ booth to showcase the upcoming fall/winter 2010 season. Phillip told us that his inspiration for fall was a mixture of disco and punk. What’s his favorite piece? “That’s difficult! It’s like choosing between your children,” Lim exclaimed. Ultimately, he picked the buff mille-feuille chiffon coat which many guests enjoyed modeling with their friends. When asked what he thought about the Chicago woman’s style, he called it cosmopolitan and said that the city is “a hidden treasure on a vast plain.” -Emily Ekern *Photos by Jeff Brown

Penguin Inks

They say to never judge a book by its cover; just like you should never judge a person by their tattoos (even though you might anyway). Penguin Books is hoping you do both because they are releasing modern classic books in a creative new way to celebrate seventy-five years of publishing. They are taking books that we already know and love, like Bridget Jones’ Diary and Waiting for the Barbarians, and having world-renowned tattoo artists and illustrators rework their covers. Many covers stick to the classic tattoo themes of women and roses, but they all stay true to the book that they are linked to. This series of newly covered books will be called “Penguin Inks” and will be available on bookshelves this June. -Emily Ekern

Bringing Hauser Back He worked for playboy when he was 13. At 16, his first assignment with Rolling Stone was to shoot a portrait of Bon Jovi. From child prodigy to legend, Marc Hauser, a Chicago photographer, made his name by staying open to opportunity and working available resources on the job. To Marc, his philosophy is about making great art from nothing. It is a philosophy and style that attracted fig media owners James and Michele Gustin to Marc. “I heard about Marc and his approach to photography when I first came to Chicago. I was and still am drawn to his single light source simplicity and I agree with his philosophy about art, that there is no separation between fine art and commercial work. He connects fine art into his everyday life like I do,” says James. “He shares our point of view, that art and good portraiture is about relationship: to self and to subject,” adds Michele. Five years ago, Marc faced a challenge that he was not prepared for, an accident that rendered him unable to work. Now he is back and collaborating on an ongoing studio relationship with fig media inc that will transform the landscape of Chicago photography, portraiture and art. To formally welcome Marc back to the Chicago photography scene, fig media is booking portraiture sessions with Marc for an affordable rate you won’t want to miss. ARTINCHICAGO by Brittany Berryman

Agga B. [curator] Chicago’s own fashion designer Agga B. has been surrounded by art her entire life, attending several gallery openings throughout Europe since childhood. For the past year, she has added curator to her resume by putting on several art shows for the Toyota Creative Lounge. In her fashion collection, Agga B. creates many intriguing looks that work with contrasting pieces. She uses dark and mysterious against subtle and light, which is inspired by earth, anatomy, science, and history. When asked how art and fashion is similar, she says, “It’s actually equally exciting and very similar this whole thing – design, styling, and curating an art exhibit. You have to have sensitivity to other people and look to style and trends to find inspiration.”

Avisheh Mohsenin

Originally born in France, Mohsenin moved to Iran while growing up and later moved to the U.S. for graduate school. She is a co-founder of the Pasfarda Arts & Cultural Exchange, an organization that promotes global exchange of arts and culture. Mohsenin creates imagery to stimulate imagination and to lead viewers into questioning their own notions for time and space in their personal environment. Throughout her work duality is used as a major element.

Agnieszka Podczaszy

Podczaszy’s specialty is to use a mixture of oil paintings with mixed media, and she loves to play on the concept of using her own indigenous materials. One of her favorite pieces of art is “Dandelion,” because of its display of immediate minimalism of color and form. Born and raised in Poland, she started her college career at The Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. She later finished at the University of Rzeszow Institute of Fine Arts.

Chadwick Anderson

Anderson uses alternative techniques when producing his live paintings with flashing lights and music. His philosophy is bringing movement to people, even painting bold, maze-like designs onstage with famous musicians like Lady Sovereign and Mos Def. Anderson began his interest in art while working as a doorman at Funky Buddha Lounge in Chicago, where he would frequently draw on sheets of paper underneath the guest list.

Christine Sanderson

Starting her career in the mid 90s as a painter, Sanderson threw parties called “Jetset Artists” in many clubs to show her fun and approachable art. Her style is a combination of oil and spray paint, combining both figurative and modern compositions. Sanderson’s colorful artwork has been featured on Camel Cigarette tins and she has had shows at the swank W Hotel and the Artist Project, as well.

Jojo

One of Chicago’s most visual personalities is Jojo, an experienced artist in the fields of dollmaking, performance and nightlife personality, as well as a hair and extension stylist. As a child, he first wanted to become a priest, but because he was so theatrical, he decided to become an artist. Jojo was put to the test when Chicago Bull’s player Dennis Rodman hired him as his personal stylist for two years. Factio loves his French Louis look!

Nestor Leivas

Having a background in graphic design, painting, and advertising, Leivas blends his photography into every form of inspiration and art. Many of his compositions are inspired from normal occurrences and interactions of everyday living. He works diligently to create his pieces successfully, evoking emotions and reaction. As a goal, he challenges the perception of everyone in a world where everything is judged, rather than accepted.

Marcos Raya

Raya’s style is a mix of German Expressionism, Surrealist, Dada, Duchamp, Mexican Muralist, Rascuache, and American pop. His latest works are inspired by politics, life, hospitals, bars, factories, books, and the street. To instill his interest in the art world, Raya’s father, an avid artist, created magic around his life that inspires him to this day.

The Streets on Fire

With members Chadwick, Yuri Alexander, Sebastian Brzek, and Gabriel Palomo, The Streets on Fire is a relentless raw energy band. They started in a rundown currency exchange in Chicago, producing a sound that feels the same as the space they inhabited. Bringing retro-aesthetic back, many of the songs bring a fuzzed-out, lo-fi sound that is similar to a forgotten 70s vinyl.

ART VS. RUNWAY Fashion is considered a form of art, and designers are truly artists themselves. They create a look based on an idea which comes to them at any point in time and for many different reasons. Because of this correlation, it should come as no surprise that many designers take inspiration from artists from the past, as well as from the present. This season it is easy to see that influence come out in their work. From paintings to sculptures to photography, this inspiration can come from any element of a piece including its lines, colors, and shapes. This process has a domino effect when other artists take their inspiration from fashion. -Emily Ekern

Part of the inaugural class of CFI, Kristin Hassan revealed her Summer 2010 collection at an intimate fashion show on April 8th, at the 900 Shops. Kristin’s girly, yet rock n’ roll collection featured lots of ruffles and adorable tulle bows that were worn atop the models’ heads. As part of the designer’s mantra, she vows to make runway looks more accessible, so she surprised guests at the end of the show by revealing that everyone was able to shop the styles they had just seen on the runway. Guests were even able to enter a raffle for a chance to win a $500 custom-made handbag from Laudi Vidni. After a successful showing at London Fashion Week for fall 2010, Borris Powell returned to Chicago to unveil his latest collection. Inspired by the architecture he had seen throughout Europe (especially in Rome), Powell created a collection combining the classic looks of a Greek goddess with modern elegance. Borris held his show at the sophisticated Knickerbocker Hotel in downtown Chicago. The collection was named The Rise of an Empress, rightly so, as models graced down the runway while being serenaded by a flute trio and bass singer. The collection featured beautiful floor-length gowns and cocktail dresses in beautiful jewel tones. –Lubna Hassan *Photos by Giuliano Correial

312 Fashion The 312 Fashion Runway Series showcased three nights of fashion shows from April 8th to the 10th. The rustic style Loft on Lake (1366 W. Lake St.) was the venue for these exclusive events which featured a runway with rows of chairs (each with a copy of Factio) for invite-only guests. Day one featured designer vignettes including Jess Audey, Kate Boggiano, Borris Powell, and Anna Hovet. The following night, Lara Miller showed off her eco-friendly collection with artist JC Steinbrunner’s hand-painted accessories. The closing show featured Horacio Nieto’s collection of both men’s and womenswear. To view videos of the shows, visit 312fashion.com

Fashion Designer Lara Miller and artist JC Steinbrunner have collaborated to bring art and fashion together, and to show that they really do go hand-in-hand. Lara and JC were introduced through mutual friends, and they gradually got to know each other on a more personal level. During the CFI 900 Shops pop-up events, the idea of a collaboration with the two occurred to Miller. She wanted to create a way to bring together both her collection and the work of JC. In the end, the two decided that models would carry Steinbrunner’s paintings down the runway as accessories. The idea behind having the paintings as bags was to add to the concept of Lara’s multi-functional looks. In her collection, a sweater can be a scarf, and a scarf can be dress. Adding JC to the mix shows that art can hang on your wall or on your shoulder. - Lubna Hassan

Chloe Eau De Fleurs Collection

Beauty

Chloe has opened a new floral chapter with the Eau De Fleurs collection featuring Lavande, Capusine, and Neroli. To create Lavande, Artistic Director Hannah MacGibbon used violet and bergamot leaves for the top note and iris blended with ambergris, leaving a lasting scent on the skin. While creating Capusine, they used a citrus approach by combining bergamot, lemon, and neroli with a hint of galbanum. They then put the closing touch on it by adding ambroxan, a sensual and woodsy element. Last in the collection is Neroli, which hosts a combination of mandarin and orange mixed with peony petals and clary sage. This blend brings a twist at the last note adding white musk and Tonka bean which gives a masculine edge into the perfume. –Lubna Hassan

Matisse Gala March 19th marked the celebration of the opening of the “Matisse: Radical Invention 1913-1917” at the Art Institute of Chicago, so it only seemed fitting that the women’s board host a fabulous event to ring it in! The gala attracted over five hundred local philanthropists and included cocktails, a viewing of the exhibition, and a sit-down dinner of citrus poached salmon roulade and beef medallions, topped off with strawberry tarts. The event took place in a special tent set up in the Pritzker Garden of the Modern Wing. The prep was rather extensive, taking upwards of four days as crews worked around the gardens of the courtyard, as well as some of its artwork and glass barriers. Through the hard work, the event proved a success, raising $500,000 and bringing into attendance notables such as former White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers and Matisse’s own grandson, Clause Duthuit with wife Barbara. – Anna Lautmann

Named “Spectacle Lunatique Gala” and held on March 12th, this party was anything but ordinary. The company that “creates unexpected theater events in unexpected locations” had to party in a big way. Marc Jacobs Private Dinner Party at The Elysian The new Marc Jacobs Collection store had their opening party at the Elysian Hotel on Thursday, February 25th. Around 200 guests made their way over (some even flew in from New York City, including company President Robert Duffy) to celebrate the opening of Marc’s second Chicago store. Guests enjoyed a raw bar with oysters and chilled vodka shooters, but the main attraction was a delicious sit-down dinner from Balsan and Ria with specialties such as foie gras macaroons and pain de mie crusted turbot. There was also a DJ and a photo booth to keep the party amusing and fun. Incredible gift bags were given out with great items like Marc Jacobs Chicago backpacks, a signature t-shirt, light pink macaroons and Lola perfume. When that party ended, guests moved their way over to Howl at the Moon and Underground for after parties filled with drinks and dancing. You can find the Marc Jacobs Collection store at 11 E. Walton in the Elysian hotel. factio-magazine.com | Factio Magazine Spring 2010

Fashion students created ready-to-wear and avant-garde garments to rock the runway, which were designed by interior design students. The FEED 100 bag garments showcased in our last issue were also shown on the runway. Former graduates of ILIA were honored in showing their spring/summer collection from their company, Crescendo Apparel.
