LG – G3 Smartphone www.lg.com/za

With new smartphones being launched practically every single day, it’s difficult to make your product stand out above the rest. But, amongst all the ‘noise’, you still sometimes find a truly stellar performer. And that’s what the new offering from LG gives us. Most of us would equate the Korean electronics manufacturer with the TVs and DVD players in our lounges but, slowly but surely, they are taking over the coveted smartphone arena with their top-notch devices. The new LG G3 Smartphone tops the list in many departments, but it is the astounding screen, fantastic battery life and stellar performance that makes it stick out.

Smaak™ 9H Tempered Glass Screen Protectors for the Samsung Galaxy S5 and iPhone 5/5s www.ismaak.com

The screen is an amazing crystal-clear Quad HD 2560 x 1440 pixel screen (better than any laptop screen) which allows you to view full HD videos and images without any issues! The 3000 mAh battery will keep your device going for almost two days and the 13MP camera also means that you can take the most amazing photos. All in all, the LG G3 comes out tops in most departments, the only con being the size of the phone, which might be a bit too big at 146mm x 74mm. But we’ll look past that for the sheer simplicity and quality of this phone. In our books it’s a definite winner if you’re in the new/upgrade market for a phone. The LG G3 smartphone will be available in South Africa from the beginning of September.

Despite the millions of different types and brands out there, it’s not often that you get to read a review on a screen protector. BUT… I recently managed to get my hands on an exciting, locally-developed screen protector created by the guys at Smaak™. It blew every single other screen protector out there out of the water. The Smaak™ Tempered Glass Screen Protector is made from 0.3mm 9H tempered glass. It’s up to three times as strong as regular screen protectors and provides maximum protection for your mobile device’s screen. It has an oleophobic coating to protect against oil and water and it has anti-fingerprint properties. The tempered glass is shock-resistant and has rounded edges that fit perfectly on your mobile device’s screen. And, priced at R250, it is a worthwhile investment to stop those nasty spider-web cracks that appear on your phone when it decides to ‘accidently’ meet the ground. They are available for purchase online at http://www. geekshop.co.za. Use the promo code Gadgets&Gizmos when checking out for FREE DELIVERY on this awesome, must-have screen protector.

umhlanga my town

Cindy Hack

This fun-loving, vibrant, sports-mad woman about town, who has played hockey for KZN since she was 13 years old, going on to play in the SA World Cup team in 2007, is now set to play in the SA indoor squad for the upcoming World Cup in 2015. With a passion for life and a love of challenges, we are profiling Cindy Hack in this edition’s My Town column. When she’s not enjoying the beach, braais and trawling the shopping malls, this is what Cindy likes to do in Umhlanga!

Fave Shop: At the moment, baby shops! There is just something special about shopping for clothes for little people, especially when it’s your little person. But, other than baby shops, I love Woolies’ coffee shop. There’s nothing like a good cuppa with my mom or a catch-up with a good friend.

Fave place to grab a cocktail with friends: I would say the Beverly Hills! They truly create the best cocktails, make you feel like royalty and the view is incredible — just my style!

Best place in Umhlanga to watch the sun go down: Oooh! There are a few good places for this, but I’d have to say the Beverly Hills again, or else just standing on the beach. We are so lucky to have the beautiful beaches that we do have here.

Wind down after work or a match: After a match, a chocolate Super Moo on the way home is definitely a winner. But, other than that, there is nothing better than just chatting about the match and everything else with my hubby and best friend, Ryan, whilst we dash home to our precious baby girl, Addison — I just adore getting loves from her.

To go on a romantic date or just to have a great dinner: I LOVE a great dinner with my hubby or my family and friends! It doesn’t have to be anywhere fancy; it’s the people that count.

Work out: The best workout by far is a session at Flux with my trainer and good friend, Sean Temple. I also love swimming, so a good swim session is one of my favourite things to do as well — but only when the water is warm!

umhlanga Stuff you should know

The essence of teatime To turn a simple visit from a friend into a formal affair, all that it really takes is the addition of a delicate teacup and saucer — throw in some flowers and a scone and you’ve got a teatime fit for a queen — even a British queen! It is, after all, thanks to the Brits that ‘teatime’ as we know it brings back memories of a bygone era where ‘teatime’ meant tables decked out in the finest linen and silverware and laden with cucumber sandwiches, crumpets, shortbread, etc — and don’t forget a perfect china tea set! But where did the tradition of teatime and all that goes with it actually have its roots? We delve into some interesting facts that you probably didn’t know about teatime.

The etiquette of teatime Never wave or hold your teacup in the air. When not in use, place the teacup back in its saucer. If you are at a buffet tea, hold the saucer in your lap with your left hand and hold the teacup in your right hand. When not in use, place the teacup back in its saucer and hold them in your lap. The only time that a saucer is raised together with the teacup is when one is at a standing reception. Do not stir your tea with your teaspoon in sweeping circular motions. Place your teaspoon at the six o’clock position and softly fold the liquid towards the twelve o’clock position two or three times. Either place the used teaspoon on the side of another plate or ask the server or hostess to remove the spoon from the table. Never leave the spoon in the cup, especially whilst actually drinking your tea. Do not use your tea to wash food down with. Sip, don’t slurp, your tea and swallow before eating.

w.fa fabbmmaaggss. c . coo. z. zaa 10 || wwwww.

Fancy a cuppa? Whilst a lot of people think of England as the place in which teatime was first instituted, it wasn’t until the late 1670s that England started importing tea, along with many other South-East Asian and Indian goods. Some believe that the tradition of afternoon tea may actually have been started by the French.

The tea party Although Catherine of Braganza is credited with making tea-drinking fashionable, the taking of tea in the afternoon only developed into a new social custom in the late 1830s and early 1840s. It is said that the tradition of afternoon tea was established by Anne, Duchess of Bedford. She requested that light sandwiches be brought to her in the late afternoon because she had a ‘sinking feeling’ at that time because of the long gap between meals. She began to invite others to join her and thus the tradition was born.

The extended pinkie Ever wondered how the timehonoured custom of extending your pinkie whilst drinking a cuppa came about? The first china tea cups were made without handles so, in order not to spill hot tea on yourself, the proper way to hold the cup was to place your thumb at the 6 o’clock position and your index and middle fingers at the 12 o’clock position, whilst gently raising your pinkie for balance.

Not-so-hightea Ever been to a high-tea in the afternoon for a few finger snacks and, of course, tea? Well, technically, this is not a high-tea at all, but actually a low-tea. Shock! Horror! The Jones’s have been lying to us! High-tea, in fact, pertains to dinner, or the main, hearty meal of the day, whereas low-tea is generally taken at around 4 to 5 p.m in a sitting room with low tables. Other kinds of teatimes — that I had never before heard of — include cream-tea with tea, scones, jam and cream, light-tea with tea, scones and sweets and full-tea with tea, savouries, scones, sweets and dessert.

Business Interview umhlanga

Krystle Schabort

In this edition’s business interview, we chat to the charismatic Krystle Schabort, property manager of the Umhlanga Centre. With a degree in entrepreneurial management from Rhodes University and a passion for health and wellness, Krystle is a great advocate of helping others, something that motivates her to try and help improve people’s lives. Apart from her very busy business life, like most women these days, Krystle’s job doesn’t end when she gets home, but rather starts again as she spends time and catches up with her three year old daughter, Isabella, and husband, Jacques. With a thirst for knowledge, she loves learning new things and calls herself a ‘know-somethingabout-everything’ kind of girl. We chat to Krystle about the ‘new’ and transformed Umhlanga Centre and what’s still in the pipeline.

umhlanga Business Interview

What was the vision and purpose of the revamp of this centre? The vision and purpose was to make it a shopping centre which is easily accessible, light and bright. The shops now open on to Ridge Road, creating a far better shopping environment for residents of Umhlanga and the North Coast. This has in turn been of benefit to our tenants. We also wanted to increase the range of tenants in order to give our customers a more comprehensive shopping experience. How long has the centre been open? Have people taken to the ‘new’ centre and what has changed? The remodel took place in stages, so the centre was never entirely closed. The remodel has enabled us to offer road-facing shops on the ground floor, a light and bright interior. People love the vibrant, modern look and the range of new products and services on offer. We also offer both indoor and outdoor parking in a village that is extremely short of parking options. In addition, we have revamped and enhanced the exterior on the road and parking side of the centre with beautiful plants and landscaping. In approaching life and business, what principles do you live by? Any relationship, including that in business, needs to be transparent and to the benefit of all parties to ensure that all are happy and therefore successful. We like to approach life with integrity and fairness and with a goal-orientated outlook. I personally believe in treating people with respect and in the way that I would like to be treated. I also have a very positive and upbeat attitude to life, which makes me content and also very grateful for what I have in my life.

Tell us a bit about what you do for the newly-refurbished Umhlanga Centre? I had an opportunity to join the family business which is involved in commercial real estate. We acquired Umhlanga Centre in 2013 and I now do the full property management function at the

centre, alongside my Herbalife business. I am responsible for the full range of management functions, which includes all the leasing of premises, customer relations, marketing, overseeing the labour force, administration, etc.

What sort of people would the ‘new centre’ appeal to and why should they visit it? It would appeal to a crosssection of our population because it is multi-functional. It has retail, quasiretail and a variety of office suites. It is a one-stop shop where shoppers can buy a house, book a holiday, have a great meal, buy an engagement ring, redo their kitchen, order beautiful floral

arrangements, have all their beauty needs fulfilled, get photos developed, get in a gym session, not to mention check out the latest ranges from some of the top local designers at one of our newest retail tenant’s shop! Other services available at suites in the centre include medical, health and wellness, legal and mobile media, to name just a few. As its property manager, what vision do you have for the future for the

Umhlanga Centre and what more can people expect? There are some very exciting plans to enlarge the centre significantly currently being drawn up that will offer the community even more. The intention is also to increase the parking facility. There are some incredible prospects lined up which will add several tenants with a national profile, as well as shops which will give the consumers of Umhlanga even more choices. Watch this space!

Quick facts! Favourite place to eat breakfast in Umhlanga? There are some great places in Umhlanga, but the the Press Club in the Umhlanga Centre is exceptional and has a huge following — it has stood the test of time in terms of quality and service! Favourite place to shop in Umhlanga? The Umhlanga Centre, of course! Favourite activity in Umhlanga? Going for a walk along the beach or for an early morning beach run on the promenade.

Outdoor Living

hen it comes to outdoor living, as South Africans, we all respond well to any new home or design project, be it in a magazine, or on TV, that successfully manages to separate the divide between indoors and outdoors, and incorporate outdoor living within the home. As an Interior Design Company, we have seen how, over the years, the importance of this trend and way of life has become the foundation for many a design project, and try, ourselves, to make this the primary focus for the way in which we design. Your patio, or outdoor entertainment area, is no longer an empty space attached to the side of a house, barricaded behind trelli-doors, but rather another room in the house. A room that serves equal importance to a formal lounge or dining room.

outdoors in” if you purchase a matching set of plastic furniture and slap it down on a cold tiled floor.

This being said, we do however, find ourselves having to educate clients, on new builds and existing homes, that equal investment needs to be made in the design and furniture selection on your patio, as they would invest in the rest of their home. There is little point in designing a home around the theme of “bringing the

Don’t think “patio” - nobody can deny that a styling or designing a patio comes with its own set of rules, and that weather and a coastal climate impacts what one can and cannot use. However, we have seen some of the most successfully designed homes embrace careful selection of materials and furniture, where we brought

When we design, there are key areas that we focus on, and have found that regardless of budget, style of home or very size of the area in question, keeping these simple steps in mind, makes all the difference. Follow the general theme of the home out onto the patio or entertainment area. Not only will this give your patio a sense of unity with the rest of the home, and tie all areas together, but it sets a path that now needs to be followed in the selection of furniture and material choices. If you apply the same thinking in how you design your formal spaces, your patio should mirror this.

in timber cladded ceilings, plush finishes that replicated touches of their formal lounge, carefully considered lighting solutions, and outdoor furniture, that tied in with what was used throughout the house. We always suggest that if you wouldn’t use a piece of furniture or style idea inside the house, question if you should be using it outside the house. Its outside for a reason – with all this said and done, an outdoor entertainment area is just that. It is a room in the house that should maximises the benefits that we as South Africans get to enjoy on a daily basis. Take advantage of the space, and create an environment that you find best allows you to enjoy the outdoors. Have a couple of sun-loungers if the space allows, incorporate a spot in the sun to read a book, make braaing and eating outdoors easy and comfortable and make your outdoor space an area worth spending most of your time. umhlanga Local Talent

Tell us a bit about yourself and your music? I am a full time Musician, DJ, Actress and Music Events Promoter. I am passionate about my Job, my music and reaching people through creativity. I’m a workaholic and very stubborn. For our readers who have never heard your music, explain your sound in 5 words: Americana: Country/Folk/Blues/ Rock. What is the hardest thing for local musicians when trying break into the music market Professionally? I think the most difficult lesson for young musicians to learn is that this is a business and you need to wear many caps. Initially you will need to be your own manager, booking agent, publicist and promoter. I think there is a misconception that all these things will be done for you but nothing could be further from the truth. On average it takes 10 years of struggling before you see any type of success. Talent is not enough. Resilience and determination are as important. A good work ethic and a liking for canned food is also needed. How do you promote yourself to land big events, what big events have you played at? Getting to know the Talent Buyer is really the only way to get gigs at these events. It’s all about the click. I have performed at Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Oppikoppi, STRAB and many more. Because of my style I mostly play theatre type venues. What is the vision for your music career i.e.: Are you ambitious to become the next big s.a artist? Fame is not my ambition. My goals are to do what I love and at the same time earn a living that allows me to secure my future. Fame is fleeting, a career with longevity is the focus. Any awesome things and places your music has taken you so far? Yes many!

I have travelled all over Europe and in many parts of Africa. Last year I visited and performed in America for the first time. And of course I have travelled to all corners of South Africa. My travels during #90Days 90Towns 90Gigs Tour – Giving a Voice to Victims of Violent Crime was definitely my most extensive and exciting tour to date. How do you use social media to influence your music career? There is a real skill in using social media. It takes a lot of fine tuning. You have to test your fans and the market and see what they enjoy. I’ve made mistakes where I lose a lot of fans in one day because I did not handle my platforms properly. People want to feel like they have a personal relationship with you, and know that you care. If you come across as pushy and a hard sell they will stop engaging. Are any of your songs on radio? If so how does that process happen? I have had a lot of songs on radio during my career. The tough thing about the SA Music Scene is that we have so few Radio Stations who play specific genres. A lot of our commercial stations play everything from Pop to House and Rock. This means there is not enough space on the airwaves for everyone. There is also a tendency to go the non-risk route from there side and the local content quota is still quite low. This is why I focus on Community Stations who have specific target markets and less pressure from sponsors and corporate investment.

I like to know where my fans are and place myself directly in front of them. I am also a Radio DJ for a community Station and understand this side of the industry very well. When exactly do you know in this industry that you’ve made it? You never “Make IT” that’s a Fallacy. Today you could be on the front page of Rolling Stone and the next day you are no longer the flavour of the month. It’s a tough business, you can never take your hands off the wheel. Do you write your own songs, what is your Inspiration when writing? Yes I write all of the songs I record. I am inspired by people, their stories, and heart break and sometimes it’s something very simple like sitting by the

SA. Men, Women and Children and I have my #90Days Project which raises funding and awareness for my Charity of Choice The Epic Foundation. Biggest influence to your musical career so far? Tracy Chapman. Who locally has promoted you the most? My mom – Always my biggest fan. What is the best thing about performing to an audience? It is the purest form of sharing. It is my fuel, my life. Best advice you’ve ever been given? Never Give Up and Stay Real. What embarrassing songs might I find on your MP3 player? Lionel Richie – But I don’t think that’s embarrassing. sea and breathing in the fresh air. I like to tell stories and it’s quite an organic process for me. Recently I co-wrote a song for the first time with a Florida based Producer. This process taught me that I can write with someone, that I can write and record a song in 4 hours and that I am capable of pushing inspiration to the front instead of waiting for it to hit me in the face. How do you balance your music with other obligations, work, school, etc? I have no children and my partner is also a musician. As I said I am a workaholic. I have a handful of people and family who are very close to me and I make a huge effort to give them quality time. I have committed my time, talent and efforts to making a difference in Survivors of Violent and Sexual Crime in

an Lambie, father of the talented young Sharks and Springbok fly-half, Patrick Lambie, was himself a gifted fullback who played rugby for Rovers and Natal in the early eighties — an era when Natal was blessed with an abundance of fullbacks. The

legendary Doc Louw’s career was drawing to a close as new boys on the block, Tim Cocks from Durban Collegians and the late John Mullis from Maritzburg Collegians, were beginning to emerge as strong candidates for the No 15 berth and it was in 1982 that Hugh

Reece-Edwards from Crusaders made his debut for Natal. Ian and Hugh, in fact, made their debuts together and Ian has vivid and happy memories of their playing days.

and Ian have been in partnership for some 22 years, now trading under the name Lambie Spark & Associates. His lovely wife, Caz, is the daughter of Dr Nic Labuschagne, another rugby icon, who played for Rovers, England and Natal. Dr Nic also became one of the most revered administrators in world of rugby. He served as President of the KZNRU and also as President of the Durban Turf Club. His magnificent hotel in the Drakensberg’s Champagne Castle is still a favourite place for the family to spend time together. (His other hostelry, the Benjamin in Florida Road, is also a very special boutique hotel.) So, when young Patrick Lambie arrived on the scene, it was almost inevitable that he, too, would have a touch of that rugby talent in his genes. From an early age it was obvious that this talented, but always humble, young lad was going to go places in the game. Educated at Clifton in Durban and later at Michaelhouse, young Lambie also showed huge talent as a cricketer and

Now a successful businessman based in Umhlanga Rocks, his rugby career came to an end in 1985 after a cruciate and cartilage knee injury and an attempted carbon fibre replacement operation, which, in those days was never a successful solution for knee injuries, unlike today, where players are back and running after some truly horrendous injuries. But where did it all start? Ian Lambie was born of Scottish descent in 1959 in Brighton in the UK. His parents were both born in Scotland and it’s interesting to note that his secondcousin is former Lions lock, Gordon Brown. Ian's grandmother and Gordon's mother were sisters, so it’s no wonder that the rugby genes flow so strongly in the Lambie family. The Lambies moved to South Africa at the end of a severe recession in the UK and, because his father moved quite often between Durban

and Johannesburg when they first arrived, the young Lambie attended many different schools. His parents eventually decided that the youngster needed a more settled education and their choice was Michaelhouse in Balgowan in the magnificent setting of the Natal Midlands. Here he thrived, ending up playing rugby for their First XV in 1976 and 77. After leaving school, he joined Berea Rovers where, after playing only a few games for their Under 20 side, he was promoted to the club’s First XV squad.

After working for a short while with Solly Kramer Liquor Stores, he was introduced to the property world by the then chairman and coach at Rovers, the late Peter Malan and Ferdie Nel, and worked for 10 years with Russell and Marriott (now The Marriott Group) before forming LMS Properties with Mike Spark and Sharks and Springbok centre, Dick Muir — and, as they say in the classics, the rest is history. was selected for the KZN Schools Teams in both disciplines. He was head boy of Michaelhouse in 2008 and made his debut for the Sharks the following year, aged only 19, in a Currie Cup match against Griquas. He was selected as a substitute towards the end of the season after having played for the Baby Boks in Argentina earlier in the year, where he was the second-highest points’ scorer at the tournament on 58 points.

married Kate Symons, daughter of former Natal wing John Symons, so there is a strong possibility that there will be future generations of rugby players in time to come. When one considers the Lambies’ Scottish heritage, Patrick Lambie could quite easily have appeared in a Scottish team list for a Five Nations programme if things hadn’t panned out in the way that they did. Instead, the talented half-back has gone on to play in 32 test matches and, having amassed 68 test points

Lambie, who is undoubtedly one of the new generation of players who remains calmest under pressure, made his debut in Super 15 Rugby with the Sharks against the Highlanders on 18 March 2010. In the same year, on 6 November, he came off the bench to substitute Morné Steyn and make his debut for the Springboks in their match against Ireland at Lansdowne Road. For grandfather, Dr Nic, it was a truly special moment to see his grandson run onto the hallowed turf of Twickenham later in the tour in the same place that he had faced England in the late fifties.

already, there is sure to be a lot still to come for this gifted young blood.

Reinforcing the strong heritage of rugby in the family, Pat recently

Apart from his lovely wife, Kate, his biggest fan is older brother, Nic, who is studying Sports Management and is also involved in Tag Rugby, a hugely important facet of the game for youngsters learning the rudiments of the sport. Who knows, in years to come, the Lambie brothers could well stand side-byside toasting their own very special rugby achievements and personal triumphs and continue the legacy started by Dr Nic and dad Ian. After all, in the end, it is family support that ultimately leads to each individual’s success.

Travel Review umhlanga

Words Lorinda Scott

Picture this: 2003, KwaZulu Natal, weekend of the Midmar Mile. A fit, blonde family from Johannesburg descends on the Midlands — Paul Hindle, engineer, a midlife crisis begging to happen; Jennifer Hindle, head of the Country Readiness School, always ready for a new challenge; and daughters Kate and Sarah, on the brink of adolescence. The result? Indigo Fields — a spa like no other.

T

ucked away three kilometres south of Nottingham Road you will find a little piece of paradise, as a group of eight moms, who recently decided to take a night off and head down to Indigo Fields in search of some ‘me time’ and just to relax, will tell you. Well, I believe that there is no other place in KZN — at least that I have found — that fulfils this dream in quite this way. It is fantastic! Run by husband and wife team, Jennifer and Paul, with a list of other family members on staff as well, Indigo Fields is truly a gem. I’ll run you through our experience but, I promise you, only a visit can do this awesome place justice, but I'll try to put into words what it is like. We booked for the full-day overnight stay and, despite the chilly weather, arrived to a warm welcome at Indigo Fields. With friendly smiles all round, the admin was swiftly sorted and we were whisked off to our private breakfast area to enjoy a Champagne breakfast by a log fire in a cosy room set aside just for the eight of us. It was a toss-up whether to go for the coffee or the Champagne, so we decided to opt for both! After breakfast, which was fresh, healthy and delicious, we were taken to change into our cosy robes to start the day of pampering and, let me tell you, the robes alone are enough to make you feel very special. No other

spa robe will ever match this. Our group divided up and off we went by Jeep to our first forest experience. A short walk into the ‘jungle’ and over the bridge we found our luxurious tented day spa and, oh, how we oohed and aahed! At this point I was thinking, ‘No, really? This is amazing!’ We had our head massages in the open, on three chairs placed outside the tent, with birds chirping, a light breeze blowing and the most perfect massage done with enthusiasm — you can feel that the therapists are happy from the way that they treat and massage you. I really did not want to get up and go inside the tent after our glorious start, but the promise of the next amazing treatment made us move. The Indigo Fields’ Special Herbal Facial was also extremely good. The products smelled amazing and instantly, between the fresh air and the amazing aromas, all your senses are on fire and you are really experiencing relaxation to the max. By then we felt as if we would need stretchers to get back to the Jeep, but we dragged our already-relaxed bodies to our transport only because of the promise that there was more ahead. So, to wake our limp bodies up again, we went into the steam room, where we laughed, sweated, joked and laughed some more until, now wide-awake again and our bodies alive with sensation, we climbed into the Jacuzzi. This was where

the party started, with another round of champagne and orange juice, time to chat, relax and enjoy the water therapy that we felt was just what the doctor had ordered. This was followed by a quick full-body salt scrub that was fantastic and exactly what was needed after the steam room and Jacuzzi. We felt alive and ravenous and more than ready for lunch at our private table by the pool. The light lunch menu covered everyone’s likes and we had to make some tough choices to decide on what we wanted. The meal was just perfect — delicious, healthy and prepared with fresh produce from their farm. I chose a salad and the butternut and feta tart, which was light and full of flavour… perfection. We all tasted a bit of each other’s food as it all looked so good! Liquid refreshments of all kinds were offered and this by now very cheery bunch of ladies chattered on like there was no tomorrow! Sated and relaxed, smiling and laughing, we were ushered off to our final treatment at 2.30pm — where had the day gone! We had our final full-body massage in the boma, feeling ridiculously relaxed; most of us actually fell asleep during the massage.

You really do feel that the staff want you to feel that they are only there to pamper you and ensure that you enjoy every second. We were sad that our spa day had come to an end but, exhausted, oily and totally relaxed, we were ready to go and find a couch, which is exactly where you are taken for your truffles and Amarula. Feet up, relaxed, oh, wow — what a day. We were then reminded that the day was not over and that dinner orders had to go in. We had to decide whether dinner would be in the boma or in our rooms. We immediately screamed, ‘Pyjama party!’ and opted for dinner at the house after a shower and a quick-catch up with our families. Our guest suite was a fully-equipped four-bedroom house with a fireplace and ample room for eight. We spent the evening chatting, laughing, skinnering and, best of all, had the best bonding time ever with a glass of wine around a cosy fire — a perfect way to end a truly memorable day. I must admit that the best part was being served dinner while we were all in our PJs. The food was just sublime and again we

‘A whimsical drive down a winding dirt road brings them to the farm that will change the direction of their lives forever — small piece of heaven overlooking the misty Balgowan Valley… and a dream is born.’ swopped plates and had a taste of everything, from the starter to the main and dessert, before agreeing that this had been a day well spent. A good night’s sleep later we were up early for coffee and rusks, chatting about everything under the sun as only ladies can, before we went off for our final breakfast, which was served in yet another area that we had not till then been to. A full hot breakfast later we could not say enough good things about the spa, the food, the people, the vibe and the place — INDIGO FIELDS is highly recommended. They also cater for couples, moms-anddaughters and pamper parties. There seems to be no limit to what they offer or their ability to meet all your needs.

Tashas

A visit to Tasha’s is always a win when it comes to food, but I have to say that I think that I underestimated just how good they are when it come to cocktails! With their super-friendly wait staff and situation in such a popular area, this café turns into a bustling ball of energy at night while girlfriends and friends gather to enjoy great cocktails and great food. We started off our awesome exploration of the menu with my all-time favourite — a Strawberry Daiquiri and no, not the kind where strawberry syrup is used to make a crushed sweet, syrupy mess! This is the kind where, with every sip, your taste buds can detect fresh strawberries along with perfectly crushed ice and just the right amount of lime. Sticking to tradition, we tried their Mojito, which I found a lot more refreshing than those served at most places simply because everything is fresh and it isn’t packed with artificial sweeteners. Then, for something a bit different, I suggest that you try Tasha’s Cosmo, a delightful rendition of the original and quite amazing, made with fresh lime and cranberry juice. The Turkish Delight — vodka, rose cordial and fresh cranberry juice with a Turkish Delight in it is also a local fave. With the rose cordial and Turkish Delight flavours milling around together, it is a bit of an acquired taste, but it certainly does make for a really nice drink. Lastly, we tried the Pimms Cocktail, which is now my all-time favourite summer cocktail! In all its simplicity, it consists of Pimms, fresh slivers of lemon, orange, cucumber, strawberry and lemonade. It is refreshing, tasty and the flavours complement each other really well. Oyster Box Hotel It’s not by chance that when you picture yourself on a beautiful beach in Umhlanga that you see yourself on a lounger, with the most breathtaking panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and find yourself at The Oyster Box Lighthouse Bar. There can be no better place than the Lighthouse Bar for unwinding with exotic cocktails and great music. The team of skilled barmen, experts in mixology, have created unique signature drinks. We tasted four delicious amber-toned cocktails, which have become the stars of their drinks menu full of local flavour. Cucumber & Rosemary tonic - this was award winning for me, fresh but also flavourful at the same time. Made with tanqueray No. Ten gin shaken with fresh lemon juice, muddled cucumber wedges and homemade rosemary syrup, charged with tonic water. Next up was Umhlanga Shling- a naturally flavoured, fruit- forward cocktail with local cane muddled with fresh pineapple and mint, topped with crushed ice and mango juice, thereafter we had a haven of luxurious tranquillity the Negroni – Tanqueray* London Dry Gin, Martini Rosso and stirred with ice, served with a generous orange (yum). And lastly we had my favourite their signature cocktail the Basil Almond Delight a delicious blend of Ciroc vodka shaken with Amaretto, fresh basil leaves and cranberry juice, topped up with lemonade – a must try for something different and exquisite! Elements Cafe Bar This chic restaurant and bar opens out onto a lower terrace with panoramic views of the ocean and a truly relaxed atmosphere. Walking in, I immediately felt comfortable and as if I could spend hours there just sipping drinks and hanging out with my girls. It has a sort of old-time charm with a fun but classy quality that really appeals to me. They’re famous for their wide selection of cocktails and their very helpful and friendly staff suggested that we try their four best-sellers. First on the list was the Beverley Hills 90210 — on the sweet side, but really delicious and flirty — made with Archers peach, lime triple sec, lemonade and fresh granadilla pulp. Next was a Strawberry and Cream Martini — a fun, fruity, dessert kind of cocktail made with vodka, strawberry purée, fresh milk and cream. For me, this was a dreamy dessert with a really nice kick — a must-have for anyone with a sweet and creamy tooth. Then came the ultimate top seller, the Clearly. Made with raspberry vodka, citroen vodka, triple sec, lime, lemonade and mixed berries, it makes a very pretty cocktail — but beware; she packs a tremendous punch. The trick to this cocktail, I found, was to let the ice melt just a tad and to drink from the rim so that the sugar adds a bit of sweetness and complements the mixed berries. While all the cocktails were very impressive, what really blew me away was the Apple Fumble… Made with gin, apple sourz, apple juice, triple sec and crushed mint, it is probably the most refreshing cocktail that I have ever had! All the ingredients work so well together to make it one classy and delicious drink. Tel: 031 561 2211

Remo’s Our Final stop of the evening was a very festive Remo’s in Umhlanga Village. We arrived to a restaurant packed with lively patrons and were immediately struck with the urge to dance! Remo’s was full of life and rearing to go for a big night ahead. We were shown straight to the bar where we sampled our first cocktail the Remo’s signature Aperol Spritz. This local fave consisted of Aperol, Prosecco and garnished with a slice of orange, it appeared as a light shade of orange and unexpectedly wasn’t sweet at all! This was a cocktail you can definitely have more than one of without getting overloaded by sugar, as well as being quite a classy drink. Next on our list was the classical Mojito! Remo’s definitely has this recipe nailed, the perfect balance of lime, mint, rum and sugar served over crushed ice, the only words I can use to describe it is “lip-smackingly-good” you really can’t beat a classic. Last but by far not the least was Sink The Pink, this is one for the ladies... Firstly its pink, it’s sweet and it packs a punch! Consisting of all the favourites Vodka, apple sours and Strawberry Liquor topped up with lemonade and a cherry to garnish. As a group of girls this was definitely a cocktail that screams “girls night out” so ladies looking for a night on the town? Look no further than Sink the pink! Remo’s is situated in the ever lively village, we danced, we jived and we ended our night with a bang! Remo’s, watch out, we’ll BE BACK! Tel 031 561 7143

o not be deceived by the tottery appearance of the gyrocopter, nor let thoughts of its precariousness mislead you — this aircraft is rock solid and I felt safe even as the pilot, 64-year-old Arthur Gemperle, cut the engine to demonstrate its solidity. I remembered a pilot friend of mine claiming that he wouldn’t fly in one because of an irrational fear and a father forbidding his young

daughter to get into one because he feared that, should anything go wrong, she would plummet from the sky. This is categorically untrue. As Arthur explained, the gyrocopter, which preceded the helicopter, is considered the safest aircraft in the sky as it cannot stall and will quite literally fly on its own. You can fly in one knowing that no matter what happens, you will land safely and slowly and, as Arthur demonstrated, you need very little space in which

to do so. I was not only enlightened by this flight, but also revelled in my tour of the sky more than in any flight that I had done before. We met Arthur in Hillcrest and drove from there to Light Flight in Cato Ridge. From the minute that I mentioned the scepticism that surrounds gyrocopters, Arthur began to put me in the picture from his wealth of expertise. His interest started when he first saw

a gyrocopter in the ’67 Bond film You Only Live Twice. He was a mechanical engineer in Switzerland, but moved to SA for an early retirement in ’92 and he has been flying ever since he fell in love with our clear skies. He began with paragliding and has clocked 1 500 flights and 1 100 hours in the air. He then moved on to flying the Magni Gyrocopter after he found one in Johannesburg and in 13 years has flown 1 500 hours in it, which is the equivalent of flying four times around the world. Arthur also broke the altitude record by climbing to 23 000ft where, he says, the temperature was minus 18

degrees Celsius. When the King Shaka International Airport opened its doors for the first time, Arthur landed his Magni Gyro on his return from an international flight, making his the very first aircraft to touch down at KSIA. His passion is innate and he lives to share it by taking fresh eyes to the sky. ‘I always enjoy being where mankind is not supposed to be,’ says Arthur. We eventually had to stop talking, but gladly so, because it was time to fly. First, don't be put off by the airfield as you take off on the short grass between the long grass because, once you take off, your horizons will forever

be broadened. I was fortunate to have Arthur to show me all the drills and how the machine will maneuver in any situation. Flying up high, with the wind at your back, the sky is in your view. Diving down low, your world is transformed as you spin and turn like a kid on a bicycle and Arthur proved that this aircraft is one powerful machine. You feel as if you have wings and are able to take a stroll on top of the world! As we flew over the huts along the Umgeni River, kids waved as they ran after us. You will never feel more like a celebrity than when you fly in the gyrocopter. People get as much of a thrill by waving to you up in the air as you do waving back. The Valley of a

Thousand Hills is best seen from the vantage point of an eagle, where the sheer magnitude of our mountain range is breath-taking. Flying with an aficionado like Arthur, who flies as a hobby and regards taking passengers as a privilege, makes the experience that much more intimate. In his spare time he also builds aircraft, including his own heli, all of which he is qualified to fly. Arthur does prefer having a passenger, and Sky Adventures is his official

booking agent — they are renewing their incorporation of the gyrocopter by putting it back on their menu. Just four months ago, Rhod Howell-Pryce bought the local business that has been in operation for 10 years. It is an ideal business for Rhod, who is a fixedand flexi-wing pilot and a microlight instructor. He, too, first fell in love with the gyro from the ’67 Bond film. Rhod has a zest for flying and aircraft that is fuelled by giving others the experiences of a lifetime. ‘That is why I love doing what I am doing, because I’m putting a smile on people’s faces every day and I’m getting paid for it! I can’t believe it: people are just so chuffed about going flying, whether it’s ballooning or gyro, and they just love it — I get such a kick out of making that happen; it is fantastic.’

ustainable interiors are fast becoming a trend that home-owners really want to understand, especially as consumers begin to realise the value and importance of the environment and the negative impact that we can have on it by not making informed decisions. Oggie Oak Flooring, which complies with the demanding Forest Stewardship Council certification criteria, gives its customers the assurance that they have made a stellar choice in the selection of their flooring product and that they can rest assured that they have made a decision that has the best interests of

the world’s forests at heart. SGS-SA, which carried out the extensive audit, is the world’s leading product testing and verification organization and an FSC certification confirms that Oggie products have been sourced from certified and compliant manufacturing facilities. A perfect interior space is defined by enviable talking points and, for this reason, Oggie has continued to strive to find only the finest oak flooring from around the world to deliver here in South Africa. What very few people know, however, is that Oggie Oak Flooring is an important fixture in some of the only South African buildings to have full Green Star SA certification.

Feature umhlanga

‘It takes a creative eye to create brilliant design in interiors, to use area in a method it work specifically and to create a space that is both practical and pleasing to the eye. Oggie is privileged to work with this type of talent and honoured to meet the specific challenges that their creative design demands,’ says Nicholas Gluckman, owner of Oggie Oak Flooring.

‘Using Oggie Oak Flooring for cladding is not a new idea,’ says Nick, ‘but it is wonderful to work with architects and interior designers who love to think out of the box and experiment. I have seen Oggie working well as flooring, as ceilings and even as cupboards, as Oggie is not only extraordinarily beautiful wide plank oak, but is constructed in a stable way.’

Oggie has made certain that their range is now available across South Africa and their newest showroom, which showcases their products in a variety of applications, has opened at 6 Beacon Rock, Lighthouse Rd, Umhlanga, Durban. This is particularly good news for locals, who can now pop in to touch the product and see the colour and texture variations that their neighbours are raving about.

Nicholas is passionate about wood and trees, which is why he goes through the very laborious task and additional expense of making sure that his products are FSC-licenced and accredited. Between travelling to international fairs and factories, he also visits to his showrooms regularly to do training and to keep himself abreast of the taste preferences or needs of each region.

‘I have always loved wood — I love wooden floors and I love to see them being enjoyed in beautiful homes,’ is his answer when we asked him what the secret of his success is. So, if you’re looking for sustainable interior products that can to be used in any number of applications in your home or business interior, we suggest that you make the time to visit the new Oggie Showroom in Umhlanga — if you haven’t already been. Their vast range of flooring options and applications could just inspire you to reconsider your option to renovate.

Mount Edgecombe Estate two As the oldest, most fabulous and most established estate around, we decided to chat to Yvette Farinha about Mount Edgecombe Estate to tell us more about how this estate has moved from Seed to Tree. When was the estate established? March 1996 The estate started with ...1 and now ends at? We have 548 magnificent homes and 44 stunning sectional title units ~ Bellerive Village was the first of nine villages to be constructed. Your best feature on the estate? Pani Forest – this lush green belt is home to blue duiker, mongoose, bushbuck and very often it’s the roosting area for our Spotted Eagle Owls. What has been learnt from the start of the estate to now being fully established? Being such a large Estate with over 900 residents, it’s imperative that we take heed and consider all requests and suggestions from our homeowners. I’m sure 18 years ago, it was much easier to discuss issues one on one and reach simple conclusions, but now, it’s a lot more difficult. We communicate constantly with our residents so they are always kept updated. Our high tech security systems ensure the security of each one of our residents.

The estate is still very much a sought after estate .. why? Location, location, location. We are situated in the middle of the best part of South Africa. Our amenities are within proximity to the Estate; King Shaka, Gateway, Medical centres, dining establishments and of course the sea! Plus, when you drive through our Estate, your heart is warmed by our abundant wildlife, our majestic homes, and our grassy lawns. When did you (management/owners) know that the estate was successful. I suppose by the amount of house sales we have on an annual basis - last year we had almost 90 house sales; quite a feat considering the economic climate out there. But that’s just it; when people come here and they learn

about this Estate and how it runs and all the rules that are in place for the protection of all inhabitants, they want to be here. What does your customers want? As long as the Association continues to work as hard as it does to ensure the lifestyle of our residents, Mount Edgecombe Country Club Estate Two will remain a superior Estate and as long as we keep those lines of communication between us and our members where ideas and suggestions can be thrown around and argued, so will we be there to ensure the necessary changes. Future for Mount Edgecombe Estate. To remain a premier estate regardless of all challenges thrown our way.

What do you deem to be the estates success? We have a Board of Directors who are members of the Association and together with their leadership, our competent management team split into specific departments, operates efficiently and effectively. Security is of course our main focus and that department is run by staff who are very professional w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

IY and pinterest projects are becoming the new craze lately, whether it’s an old palate or plank, or a cheap trip to the hardware store these days having inventive beautiful things doesn’t have to cost an arm or a leg but rather just an hour or two of your time and effort. As its woman’s month we will start off this ongoing feature with something a bit more simple and less hardy to get you going! First up we have a stunning Mason Jar herb garden! This allows you to have the freshest of herbs without them taking over the garden in a nice neat and attractive design. This is so simple to make and can easily be placed both inside and outside the house! You will need: • old wooden board • mason jars (Console / Jam Jar) • pipe clamps • triangle ring hangers • stainless hanging wire • picture hanger • black chalkboard paint & chalk • brush • hammer, nails and screwdriver • herbs You need to: • Space mason jars evenly on wooden board, and mark placement with a pencil in order to design and measure around. • Tape off rectangles on board, and paint with chalkboard paint as pictured above. This way, you can switch out herbs and change their labels accordingly. • Paint pipe clamps gold or preferred colour, and secure to wooden board by hammering a nail through the small holes in the pipe clamp. • At the back of the board, nail in ring hangers and tie on hanging wire. Or you could screw it straight into the wall! • Visit your local nursery and buy your favorite herbs, plant herbs in mason jars with potting soil. • Place mason jars into pipe clamps and tighten with a screwdriver. • Nail picture hanger into the wall, and hang your herb display! LOVING LIVING LIFE

night out at Barrio’s is a treatand-a-half, with excellent service and fabulous food. From the outset it is obvious that you will be having an authentic Mediterranean experience and, with so many wonderful tastes and traditions, this is one unique and lively restaurant.

meat is fall-off-the-bone tender and served in the traditional way). This was perfectly done and, as it should, fell off the bone as soon as my fork touched it — tender and tasty! And then we had the Seafood Platter for Two (fish, prawns and calamari), which was tasty, fresh and unpretentious. Love, love, love!

We started with more starters than we could eat, but the variety and the taste of each dish was just amazing. We thoroughly relished just how fresh and tasty the starters were and we particularly loved the Prawns (prince prawns seasoned and grilled in lemon

For dessert we had the Tiramisu, which was a large portion, with the flavours perfectly balanced, smooth and not overly rich — which meant the portion was devoured in no time. The Chocolate Mud Pie (steaming, melted chocolate and

The carefully selected dishes reflect the Mediterranean lifestyle — that dining is a ritual for the senses and intended as the sharing of flavours amongst companions, with the absolute necessity to pause for a moment and fully indulge and appreciate being alive butter), the Trinchado (beef strips in a tantalising, spicy marinade of tomato, garlic and chilli, served with toasted bread) and Shish Tawook (cubes of chicken breast marinated in lemon and yoghurt and grilled on a skewer) For mains we tried the Paella (a saffronseasoned rice dish, pan cooked with seafood and vegetables in the Spanish way) which was the perfect portion size, filled with seafood and with fabulous flavours. We also had the Arni Kleftiko (lamb shank slow-roasted for five hours in rosemary, garlic and lemon until the

peanut butter sponge topped with vanilla ice cream and drizzled with caramel sauce and shaved roasted almonds) was on the small side but, considering the richness and the intense flavours, it was actually exactly the right size. We had a truly fantastic evening out in a restaurant where all the staff looked happy, with salsa music and lessons in the background. Vibey and fun, we just loved the decor — it makes you want to visit the Mediterranean. In the meantime, though, take a few moments out at Barrio’s and enjoy —it is practically the same thing anyway!

TASTE of everything

I

f you have not experienced the Pick and Pay Taste of Durban, you are missing out! This was the second year in a row for us and, with me being a huge tapas-kind-of-meal fan, I love the starter-portion size of the dishes, which allows you to try a variety of food and tastes from around Durban. This is restaurant-hopping at its best! Taste of Durban works in a currency called scoins,

rather than cash or cards, which I believe makes buying anything a lot faster, as there is no waiting for cards to be swiped or to receive change. We managed to make a stop at a good number of restaurants in our allocated four-hour slot. I loved trying the shabeen style food from Durban EKasi Experience and we thoroughly enjoyed the food from Max’s Lifestyle from Umlazi. We have

heard only great things about this cool new, happening and trendy restaurant . We were not, however, brave enough to go for the tripe, but the grilled lamb chops served with pap and salsa and Max’s boerewors with herb and maize meal mash and chakalaka was hot and very tasty! We also tried the mini Asian ‘wagu angus’ burger from Havanna Grill and the sticky

short ribs with sour cream dipper from the Freedom Cafe. The smoked salmon fishcakes and Asian noodle salad from Vigour and Verve was very tasty and the calamari, quinoa and sundried tomato pesto and macadamia nut salad from Market was superb — probably our favourite meal — and the Sechan chilli chicken breast fillet tossed in chilli and roasted garlic from the Greedy Buddha was delicious. All in all, we were very satisfied with all the superb flavours. I am sorry, though, that we never got to taste the butter chicken from Palki or the sushi from Beluga, which looked amazing too. Almost every stall had a desert option, which we gave a miss, instead opting to visit one of the stalls and try a trio of mini macaroons and, of course, we had to taste the delectable chocolates from the Lindt Chocolate Studio. Drinks-wise, this is a fun day out with so many wine guys around, as well as other drink options. We particularly enjoyed the Idiom Estate Wines and we even toasted

our mothers-in-laws, both in heaven now, with a fab and feisty red which is simply called Skoonma. The Waterford Wine Estate dessert Wine was the perfect way to end the wine tasting. The Castle Milk Stout stand offered a fabulous stout tasting and food accompaniment option. It really all depends on your own taste, because there’s food and drinks all around you, but our favourite find of the day was a new product, still to be launched in South Africa, called Rekorderlig Premium Cider. This 500ml cider, served ice cold and prepared with fresh fruit and mint, was a big hit and we bought a case of it in anticipation of its arrival this summer. 2015 here we come for sure! • A scoin is worth R5 — most dishes cost between 4 -8 scoins (so R20 – R40) • A scoin booklet is worth R100 and gives you 20 scoins • Entrance fee is R80 and includes a wine glass

T

o show the diversity and talent of the local ladies in our town we thought we’d profile 4 lovely business ladies that have broken the mould and are doing something unique, creative and somewhat different and in this following a career path that is their true passions. We applaud these women for following their instincts, dreams taking a risk and coming out prosperous.

Tell us a bit about yourself? I suppose that I've always been considered a creative person. As a tiny child I used to sit with my mum while she was sewing and cut and make things out of all the scraps. I remember selling 'peg dolls' at school to all my classmates in Standard 2. What you do and what made you start it? After 15 years in the ad industry, I found that I was no longer doing what made me happy! I have always been fascinated by handmade goods and gorgeous things. I also have a huge empathy for women and want them to be self-sustaining. So, under God's wing, I started a pottery course. I knew that I had been born with talents to use for a reason.

60 |

w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

My pottery course led me to make little ceramic crosses threaded onto velvet ribbons and my friends all asked me for one. I also experimented with hand-rolled beads and made some bangles and, well, it just grew from there and we launched a range of ceramic jewellery at Design Indaba 2010. The best thing about it is that anyone can roll beads from clay. I started working with HIV-affected women from the Hillcrest Aids Centre as I felt that is was the perfect employment for women who are sick, as they can make beads at home, even in bed. We are always looking to reinvent and add exciting new products into the range. It’s been five years now and every day is fun

— the most amazing thing is that all my boxes are ticked! My soul sings, my time is flexible, I work from home and not one day feels like work. Tell us about what you offer? We have our existing ceramic bead jewellery range, all handmade. Our range of ceramic bead chandeliers covers a variety of sizes, designs (some French, some contemporary and some just beautiful) and colours to suit any style of home/environment and we can custommake bespoke one-off pieces too. We have been experimenting with vignettes/ombre patterns on the chandelier beads which are just beautiful. We have just launched a range of garden swings — swings for one,

umhlanga

SEAFOOD | GRILLS | PIZZA | PASTA

swings for two — so cute, with a handle in the middle — and a gorgeous pod swing/ chair for the veranda or to hang from a tree. We are now working on a range of French-inspired garden accessories like benches, chairs, gumboot stands, pebble trays, etc. We are busy creating a slipcover concept as well, where you buy pockets for storage to 'snap' onto a generic slipcover — great for babies, kids and teenagers too. (Imagine pockets for TV Remotes, iPads, cell phones, PJs, books, glasses, etc... What gives your business its edge over others doing similar things? Sjoe! I think it’s taking Hellooow Handmade very seriously as a brand and doing everything that I can to stay responsible to what we stand for, making sure that we only align ourselves with likeminded brands/products and also always delivering a superior quality product. Why are you so passionate about the products that you sell? Well, I love the fact that they are 100 percent South African — I'm a die-hard SA fan! Also, the fact that everything is completely handmade, so that they have real soul. I’m tired of all the massproduced plastic and wood rip-offs that our retailers love that are just so disappointing! As well, the fact that every bead is hand-rolled from clay means that the product in its entirety has helped provide for a woman and her family. I also love designing every item and seeing it evolve into a 3D masterpiece.

What do you see for the future of your brand? I'm a bit of a control freak and a superperfectionist, so I don’t see franchising being an option. But our international market is growing and Hellooow is definitely becoming a recognized international brand, which is incredible. I really want to be able to hand this business over to my children one day. I would love them to enjoy the lifestyle and to be able to nurture their creativity too. As a start-up business, who has been the biggest help and driving force behind you? A number of things — God, of course, when I was so stressed about what I had really been created to do, my family, close friends who believed in me... Years ago, I actually went to a talk by Bobby Skinstad and he spoke of how, before his rugby career took off, his dad had told him to never, never, never ever give up and he would sign all his autographs with FWC — Future World Champion. I went home and on a pink 'sticky’ wrote ‘FWC — never, never, never, never, never, never, never give up’ and, whenever I was low, I'd look at it, give myself a virtual kick up the butt and force myself to stop feeling sorry for myself and to remember that God had created me to be great, not a failure. www.hellooow.co.za

Chloe Malherbe LegenDairy Handmade Ice Cream Tell us a bit about yourself. I have always been passionate about food and cooking so, after a ‘career crisis’ during my student years, I changed from a nursing degree to a culinary arts diploma. I studied in Pretoria and loved the variety of food cultures and influences on offer. Pretoria taught me to appreciate locally-sourced and fresh ingredients and it also taught me to appreciate the art of handmade goods. What do you do and how long have you been doing it? I own LegenDairy Handmade Ice Cream. It is a unique small business specialising in artisan ice cream, using all locally-sourced ingredients, always fresh and always seasonal. It will have been open for a year in November and I’ve loved every moment of it. What made you want to open a unique business like this? A passion for great food. I felt as if making truly good ice cream was a dying art. When it’s handmade, using the best and freshest ingredients, the flavours aren’t like anything that you buy in a supermarket. I think it’s also a challenge. I wanted to push myself to see if I could do it and to aim for something way above average. What made you sure that this is what the market needed and wanted? I wasn’t sure, quite honestly. And there are a few days when I’m still not sure. I believe, however, that there is always room for quality food — in fact, any quality product. We’re moving away from highly-processed foods and focusing more on the source of our food. This is what my product celebrates. It’s the proof that good, fresh produce makes all the

62 |

w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

difference. Also, do we even need to ask if there’s room for ice cream? You come up with your own new and innovative flavours. What has been the best and the worst flavour that you’ve created? We offer classic flavours which are decided on by consumer demand, popular culture, etc, like peanut butter, 65% dark chocolate, vanilla bean, roaster coffee, etc. Then, according to whatever farmers can supply us with, we’ll brainstorm and think of interesting flavour combinations. Some of these, for example, are granadilla and white chocolate, cinnamon and macadamia nut brittle, ginger, lemon curd, roasted plum and cinnamon. My absolute favourite flavours are the peanut butter and the granadilla and white chocolate. Peanut butter also happens to be the most popular. An experimental flavour which went wrong was bacon and egg ice cream — blegh! What makes your product so different and better than store-bought products? This, to me, is like comparing apples with pears — you really just can’t. Straight off the bat are our prices and, I’ll admit, we are more expensive than commercial store-bought ice cream. However, on the taste front, you’ll immediately notice the difference. LegenDairy is a rich and creamy ice cream and it’s a lot ‘heavier’ than commercial ice creams because it contains free range and full cream milk, cream and eggs. This gives it a really balanced and smooth texture. Also, with the fruitier ice creams, the flavour is truly special. The fruit really ‘pops’, so you’re not searching for flavour — it’s there and it hits you right away. Also, when you support a small local business, you’re supporting other

small local businesses. It’s the concept that by buying this ice cream, you’re encouraging growth amongst fruit farmers, egg producers and dairy farmers. It builds on job creation, productivity and ultimately the economy. How has the business been received thus far? Overall it’s been a hugely positive and humbling process. I say this because some days I literally think that it’s the end — those days when everything goes wrong and nothing is working out. However, our customers are incredibly loyal at markets and restaurants. It’s really humbling to hear positive feedback and praise for something that you are so passionate about. What do you see for the future of your brand? The aim would be to find a really great space to work from (we currently work from home) and to grow from just production to a retail space where people can enjoy ice cream, ice cream desserts, coffee and an environment which is happy and on trend for what our town needs — moving away from the coffee and WiFi to ice cream and WiFi perhaps! As a start-up business, who has been the biggest help and driving force behind you? She’ll never let me forget this, but my mum. Hands down! Jenny Kervarrec & Kylie van Staden Shades of Green Events Tell us about the unique business that you have started and what you do. Shades of Green Events is a sustainable event and exhibition management company which opened its doors in July 2012. Our head office is in Durban, but the company also operates nationally. We assist our clients to plan and execute corporate events and exhibitions professionally and in a socially and environmentally responsible way. Our belief is that within each client’s budget and specific needs there is a shade or level of ‘greenness’ that can be applied to the event or exhibition, no matter how big or how small. All that we need is the client’s commitment to making an effort to limit the event or exhibition’s impact on the environment — we then not only manage the event/exhibition, but also add the ‘green spin’ at no additional charge. What made you want to take on such an unusual line of work? We felt that there was space in the market for another event and exhibition company and we knew that we could make ourselves distinctive through our passion for greening. We could not find any other company in Durban that offered a similar added value of greening services, so we simply built on our professional experience of event and exhibition management by adding skills such as event greening, environmental policy development, carbon footprint analysis and so forth.

Tell us what you offer. Shades of Green Events offers: • Event planning and management (corporate and social events, from small product launches to large award dinners and gala functions). • Exhibition management (from small display stands to full installations and international exhibitions). • Exhibition stand design and the construction of custom and system exhibition stands. • Portable display products. • Event and exhibition greening. • Carbon footprint analysis. • Environmental policy development (for events, exhibitions and companies). What gives your business its edge over other event companies? Shades of Green Events reduces our clients’ environmental impact whilst increasing economic, social and environmental benefits. We believe that within each client’s budget and specific needs there is a shade or level of ‘greenness’ that can be applied to the event or exhibition, no matter how big or how small it is. So, in addition to managing events and exhibitions for clients, we allow them to reduce their impact on the environment and in so doing to enhance their reputation.

find comes very naturally. It also keeps life interesting, since each event and exhibition is unique and different — we rarely find two alike. Even annual ones have unique elements that allow us to use our creativity. In addition, we get to carry our passion for greening into our work. How can we not be passionate about what we do! What do you see for the future of your brand? Since Shades of Green Events is still fairly young, we will continue to expand our client base in South Africa and to encourage clients and service-providers to incorporate environmentally friendly approaches into their everyday professional (and hopefully personal) lives. Currently concepts, such as carbon footprint analysis and greening, are new and some companies are hesitant to embrace them. Awareness-creation is key to creating a market for our offerings and, in turn, limiting the negative impact of events and exhibitions on the environment. As a start-up business, who has been the biggest help and driving force behind you? We would have to say our husbands. They have been amazing in providing emotional and — at the start — financial support.

umhlanga Beauty Review

10/10

A Perfect Words Storm Catterick

I

love doing spa reviews because, beautywise, I am shocking when it comes to looking after myself and, having moved into my own home, my priority is now buying things for the house at the expense of my beauty regime! I think that a lot of women can relate to this because, whether it’s kids, work, the house, etc, there always seems to be something that needs taking care of. Well, I say that enough is enough and, after spending a couple of glorious hours at Perfect 10 at the Lighthouse Mall, I am going to be a little bit more selfish and spend a lot more time in spas — and in particular this spa... My morning had started off really badly with a near-accident with a taxi on the way to Umhlanga, but when I walked into Perfect 10 and the staff’s happy warm and caring faces looked back at me, I immediately calmed down and the tension in my shoulders relaxed a bit and when they heard they were getting a massage, they immediatly started singing ‘Oh, halleluja’! My massage therapist, Zama, has been in the beauty industry for six years and she really knows her stuff. When I was compos mentis again after the massage, life felt amazing (I’m a massage sleeper when it’s that good). With just the right amount of

pressure to unknot all my muscles and some rhythmic arm movements (I honestly don’t know how masseuses make it seem as if they have 20 hands) I was in heaven! The massage is 30 minutes of pure pleasure and what I like about the Dermalogica oil that she used was that it doesn’t leave you feeling sticky afterwards. Once you have been wiped down with a nice hot towel, you are good to face the day ahead. What I also liked about the massage was that it didn’t affect my hair — you could easily grab a massage during your lunch break and be back at work looking good and feeling great. Next, I was seated in a relaxing massage chair to enjoy a cup of coffee and a Gellish pedicure. The treatment takes about an hour and a half, but when you’re that comfortable, the time goes by extremely fast! Trisha was my therapist and she has been in the industry for three years — she says that she couldn’t imagine herself in another career or in another salon. Trisha did my Gellish first. I really think that this is the way forward, ladies! Why on earth bother with ordinary nail polishes when Gellish is not that much more expensive, dries immediately and lasts for about a month — Gellish is amazing and my new best friend. Whilst I was getting my toes done, Kubashni, our saleslady, was enjoying

a Gellish manicure in the front room and it turned out to be as amazing as my toes did in the pedi room. For my OPI pedi, she started by putting on a softener which is applied to your calluses to help stop the skin from flaking and creating dust when you buff your feet. Then it was on to a Lemon Tonic Scrub (smells phenomenal) and, after a wash, she put on a minty mask to soften and moisturise the skin. This is covered with clingwrap and left to soak in for about 10 minutes. Once the mask is washed off, you get an amazing foot massage before the softener is rubbed in again. Well, at that stage my feet could have been in a competition with a baby’s bottom and come out the winner! All the products used are also retailed in the store. After my treatments, I got a chance to chat to the owner, Rosanne Pillai, who is patently passionate about all things beauty, as well as a huge fan of the Perfect 10 brand — she had been one of their most loyal customers before she bought into the franchise. Both a lawyer with her own practice and a qualified beautician, Rosanne is a busy woman, but she says that without the beauty side, her life would be incomplete. All in all we had a fabulous experience and I would go back in a heartbeat.

hen booking a Ladies Night at The Bedroom you can be assured of one thing... it is not a Linen Shop.

The Bedroom is a safe place catering for women where they can ask questions and explore their sensuality. We are an EduRetailer and offer expert advice on how to empower yourself sexually. We also offer a selection of imported and especially made locally designed lingerie, Lotions and Potions, reading material and last but not least the highest quality playthings available. The Ladies will have exclusive use of our shop for the duration of the evening, during which they will be given an informative and liberating tour through our sensuous store. Although we are passionate about educating women about the products that are available, we are here to make their Ladies Nights one to remember. The Ladies Night begins with complimentary refreshments and an introduction to The Bedroom and the new owners Bonnie and Tamarin. The tour follows with a look at our lingerie which is soft and sexy and there is always a bit of a twist to even the simplest pair of Boy Shorts. We then move onto our Lotions and Potions which are explained and can be tested by the guests followed

by our very own Bedroom products which they can pamper themselves with. Finally we take the guests through to the toy room where the real fun begins with the indepth explanation of the latest play things available. Our ethos is to empower women and to teach them to embrace their sensuality in a safe environment. The dynamics of the Ladies Nights are such that stories are shared and bonds are made. We encourage questions and comments, none of which are considered frivolous at The Bedroom. We like to say that “What is discussed in The Bedroom stays in The Bedroom”. High Tea – Every lady should do this with her girls at least once!

The Oyster Box’s high tea table is legendary… laden with sumptuous treats, from freshly baked scones, pastries, quiches and cakes, to finger sandwiches and savouries. Inspired by the hotel’s original, colonial architecture and resplendent with chandeliers purchased from the Savoy Hotel in London, High Tea at The Oyster Box is a lengthy, leisurely affair. The menu changes regularly to suit seasonal availability and specialities but the following is always to be found on the tea table: cake of the day (chocolate gateaux, fresh cream and strawberry, chocolate fudge, lemon cream), a selection of loaves (lemon sponge, walnut and carrot, almond and seed), berry pannacotta, seasonal fruit tartlets with a custard base, coffee and caramel éclairs, chocolate éclairs, peppermint crisp and chocolate mousse squares, berry mousse squares, mini lemon meringues, chilled coconut rice pudding, assorted cupcakes, scones, shortbread fingers, Lindt chocolate brownies, ginger biscuits, oatmeal crunchies as well as assorted muffins and sandwiches. All patisserie, confectionary and breads are made daily in our own kitchens by executive pastry chef Joanita Venter and her team. Tea begins at 14h30 and ends at 17h00 and booking is essential, especially on weekends. High tea is R195 per person and is served daily. umhlanga Rookie mom

I’m talking warm sunny weather, clambering over rock pools looking for crabs, building sand castles in the little bay in which a burst sewage pipe flowed giving everyone in our family chronic diarrhoea and vomiting for the entire ten days. That’s right. Idyllic. After four nights of changing bed sheets and pyjamas and syringing medicine into a baby’s throat, I had had enough. The boys had woken up at 4.30am. I had to get them out the house. My poor parents had been amazing but I suspect they were on the verge of disowning us, and I’m pretty sure my sister will be arranging a vasectomy for her fiancé when they get back to Cape Town. So I packed the two kids into the car and drove to the Shelly Centre at 6am. There the three of us walked around the mall in our pyjamas for an hour, looking into the windows of the closed stores and waving at the staff who stared at us as they walked to work. Did I mention I was wearing my bright purple running shoes? It was a highlight in glamour for me, personally. But what is it that makes a woman beautiful? Is it her hair or her clothes or her flawless make up? Is it her skinny bum or long legs or ability to rock the sky-high wedges?

Brave is the New Words jess basson

Beautiful It’s not a clip. It’s dried yogurt.

I’m-so-chilled-even-though-I’m-in-a-germinfested-clinic face on, and I occasionally caught the eye of someone in the room who smiled at me. I smiled sweetly back at them. Hi there. Yes. I am one of those relaxed, go with flow mamas, how are you? Until about 20 minutes into my stand-up demonstration of awesomeness when a kind elderly woman whispered to me that my fly was down. So glamorous.

Then there’s the time when I was waiting in line at the La Lucia clinic for baby vaccinations. I stood rocking my restless infant in the crowded room, with my serene,

If you’re not convinced about my sophisticated style, let me share the events of last month. We were down on the South Coast for an absolutely idyllic family holiday.

Being a young mom of two toddlers, I’m often approached by many other women who want to know the secret to my glamorous look. And by many other woman, I mean absolutely no one. Even now, as I type this, there is literally dried yogurt in my hair. I felt it when I ran my fingers through my glossy locks and I thought, “Oh, a clip.”

Here’s the truth. You are not more feminine when you are beautiful. You are a beautiful woman when you are brave. • Brave is the mom dropping her baby off at day care for the first time because whether she wants to or not, she’s got to work full-time. • Brave is the single woman going to another work function alone, another dinner with all the couples, and popping the champagne for another friend getting engaged. • Brave is the woman visiting the fertility clinic each month, waiting for her own good news, and throwing a gorgeous baby shower for her best friend. • Brave is the forty-something empty nester who starts studying for her degree after the kids have left home and is the oldest person in the lecture hall. Brave is beautiful.

Celebrating Women this Women’s Month will. Another statistic shows that 53 % of women talk about what is bothering them opposed to 29% of men. Women will talk out their differences before throwing a punch, like Ghandi says, “if non-violence is the law of our being, the future is with women”.

Words Pippa Rowney

Women have a higher IQ than men. Researcher James Flynn collated his results from around the world and yes it is true, women rank higher in IQ results. This doesn’t necessarily mean women are harder working, but at the core of genetics there lies the truth.

A

ugust is Women’s Month, a month where women are celebrated for all the incredible things generations past have overcome and for all that women have accomplished. The 9th August is National Women’s Day and to honour all women in South Africa, I would like to quote Mahatma Ghandi. “Woman is the companion of man, gifted with equal mental capacity... If by strength is meant moral power, then woman is immeasurably man's superior... If non-violence is the law of our being, the future is with women...” So in true women’s style, let’s take a candid look at why in fact “woman is immeasurably man’s superior” and “the future is with women”. I did a little research and among reasons

like “women make better bosses” and “women evolve hotter”, here are a couple things to think about as you celebrate the women in your life. Women communicate better. Yes this is probably the most hilarious difference between men and women, and to prove it a gender study was done and turns out women speak 25 000 words per day whereas men speak only 12 000 words per day. Women can talk for hours over brunch, discussing all the latest news and social gossip, and when it comes to sorting out an issue at home or work, well that’s where the next point comes in... Women are more in tune with their emotions. Now I use the word “more” here because don’t get me wrong, men are also able to speak about their stuff, BUT it is more likely that women will address emotional turmoil before men coffeyandcake.blogspot.com

72 |

w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

Women are GREAT at multi-tasking. Ever watched your mother or wife answer the phone while packing away groceries, switching the oven on, sending a couple last minute emails all the while having a perfectly logical conversation? A study was done at the University of Hertfordshire where the results proved that 70% of women were better at multitasking than the men in the group. The women were able to take a step back and plan their approach much better than the men could, a quality that is highly admired in women. Women live longer. According to the New England Centenarian Study, women generally live 5 to 10 years longer than men. Within this study it shows that among the world's population, of those who are over 100 years old, 85% are women. Some might say that women are a great investment. Ghandi’s wise words have set the tone for decades around discussions of gender and power, but today as you read this light hearted play on words, let us take a moment to be serious and celebrate women not only for these reasons, but for the many reasons that go unnoticed daily.

ith a team of experienced sales staff who are always eager to share their knowledge and enthusiasm with prospective buyers, it is a no-brainer that Audi Umhlanga should stand out in the Audi brand. Jaco Boyens, dealer principal, says that authenticity, internal culture and dedication are what set this dealership apart from others. ‘I like to run a business that is light and agile, in order to embrace and welcome change,’ he says. One such change that has been implemented is the appointment of an extremely passionate, knowledgeable, young and highly-motivated management team which, Jaco believes, will see the business flourish and grow well into the future.

‘We at Audi Centre Umhlanga strive to offer our clients a world-class experience when they visit our dealership,’ says Jaco ‘ and this is achieved by offering them the latest in Audi products, a satisfying ownership experience and customer service like no other!’ For Audi, sales satisfaction and service is of the utmost importance and, like a well-oiled machine, everyone is on board and knows what it is that they have to do to be able to provide that. It is interesting to note that in order to calculate customer satisfaction, a

research agency actually phones every Audi customer countrywide to find out what their pre- and post-service relationship with the dealership was like and this gives you a very accurate estimate of how a dealership is run. And apparently Audi Umhlanga runs an extremely tight ship, with the Customer Satisfaction in the New Vehicle Sales Department being of utmost importance. This department is under the watchful management of the new sales manager, Wayne Maybery.

“But, as is true for most luxury retail businesses, times are tough and consumers are more aware of their spending patterns. In a competitive retail environment, customer service is all that sets us apart.” Jaco understands this and instils into his sales team his belief that you shouldn’t fixate on negative impacts that you have no control over — it is in those times especially, that you should remain focused, keep motivated and concentrate on the factors that you do have control over, like the interaction that you have with every customer, control over the effort that you put into your marketing activities, and control over the sales that you generate through your marketing activities. ‘The key is to become selfmotivated from within,’ says Jaco. So what does the future hold for Audi Umhlanga? Jaco says that with a strong management team now in place, they have set a number of new goals with the vision of eventually becoming the Audi dealership of choice in greater Durban. ‘Much as Audi South Africa is driven by growth and continuously evolving into a better and better brand, Audi Umhlanga will do the same!’ says Jaco.

LITTLE MISS SARAH DONKIN

E

very now and then I meet someone who rejuvenates my interest in my fellow human being. Someone who makes me feel warm and fuzzy on the inside and leaves a permanent smile on my face. That’s how I felt when I met little Miss Sarah Donkin. Even as I write, my arms are covered in goosebumps; I marvel at the talent of this young lady and wonder what the world has in store for her. Actually, I’m going to rephrase that: what Sarah has in store for the world! This bright young thing is all of 11 years old and oozes enough talent to stupefy a grown person! Well, for this grown person anyway! I was bewildered by her and am so privileged to share her story with you. Thank you to the Donkin family for allowing me this honour! Granny Margaret Donkin contacted me, gushing at how talented her granddaughter is and that I must go and chat to her. So I made arrangements to do just that. Why such a big deal you may ask. Well, Sarah Donkin played the leading role in a recent production of Annie which showed at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre. Not only that, but she auditioned with 87 other little girls. Now do you understand all this enthusiasm? Keep reading and I’m sure you’ll agree.

Sarah is the daughter of Murray and Lee-Anne and is an only child...er... with the exception of her pet brother, Buddy the Labrador. What an animal! He follows his “sister” all over, his eyes never leaving her. Sarah accredits her easygoing relationship with the Golden Retriever in the show to the solid bond she has with Buddy.

would love to do the Sound of Music and apparently there’s a new musical called Mathilda which she’d also love to be a part of. Lee-Anne said of the Annie role that the timing was perfect because Sarah was in the right age group. LeeAnne also said that Sarah loves being at home, even though she has a lot of close friends.

Sarah is in Grade 6 at Umhlanga College. She plays the piana, does ballet and sings....a lot. Singing, she tells me, is her passion. Although Sarah has taken part in school plays, ballet productions and is part of the music academy where she takes singing lessons, Annie was her first professional production. The DMA approached mom, Lee-Anne and told her about the Annie production urging Sarah to audition.

Sarah said that the cast of Annie was so friendly and everyone got along really well. There was a lot of support and encouragement from the adults of the show. One such person, Peter Court, a fellow cast member said to Sarah after their last show, “this isn’t the end of an opportunity, but rather the beginning of another opportunity.” I couldn’t agree more. He’s a very wise man I say.

The auditions for Annie began at the beginning of the year with rehearsals commencing over the Easter weekend. It took 5 weeks to put the entire production together. Two girls were given the role of Annie; Sarah Donkin and Luca Tarboton. There were 30 shows in total with 2 complete casts of children who alternated performances whilst the adults performed in all the shows.

Lee-Anne said that as a parent watching her young daughter perform on stage was one of the most surreal experiences ever. “It was so emotional and I was teary-eyed most of the time. I couldn’t believe that that was my child. I’m so very proud of her. ” As Lee-Anne spoke, tears sprung to her eyes and I could see the pride and warmth spread over her face in adoration of her daughter. It was a truly beautiful moment.

I asked Sarah about her future aspirations and she replied that she

Sarah says she has a passion for live theatre, preferably musicals and that one day she would love to be on the West End of Broadway. Now that is some aspiration! One of her favourite experiences on the production was working with a golden retriever named Pluto. She recalls being on stage almost ready to break into song, when Pluto strutted onto the stage and proceeded to urinate right there in front of everyone. The audience was in hysterics. Sarah said that all she could do was continue to sing hoping she wouldn’t giggle. When asked about whether she preferred to have people in the audience that she knew to those she didn’t, Sarah responded that it was way better to have those she didn’t because the pressure wasn’t as bad. Lee-Anne marvelled at how her daughter was able to juggle school exams, play the piano, go for ballet lessons and singing classes and still remain so easygoing. Not only that, but with all this going on, Sarah still accomplished straight A’s at school. I cast a glance at Sarah whose cheeks were rosy with the compliments made by mom. Lee-Anne said that Sarah made a few sacrifices such as missing

out on parties and not playing her favourite sport, netball, yet it’s evident that this experience will be cherished. I asked Sarah who she took after in her family to which she laughingly replied, “Definitely not my dad!” Lee-Anne answered that when she was growing up, she did drama and dancing. I guess that answers that question then. Sorry dad!

At the end of most of the shows, LeeAnne said there was a standing ovation. “I knew my daughter was good, I just didn’t realise she was that good! The audience responded so well to her!” Sarah covers her mouth with her little hand and tucks her face into her chest. I smiled at the meekness of this little lady who sat beside me while her adoring mom poured out her admiration and

celebrated her daughter’s unique talent. In her role as Annie, Sarah sang 12 songs. That must be trying on a young voice and she told me that she inhales steam water to keep her throat moist, gargles with salt water to prevent scratchiness and drinks honey. Her vocal chords always need warming up which she does before each show. Sarah said that whenever there was a curtain call, one of the cast members would tell Sarah that her mom was crying again. At the last showing, mom wasn’t alone because all the girls backstage were in tears. Sarah said that the last show was very emotional for everyone. At the end of the show little children often approached Sarah asking for her autograph and a photo of themselves with her. Sarah remarked that at school, she had to go and drop off an item with a Grade three teacher and on doing so, the children in the class gasped and pointing at Sarah said, “that’s Annie”. Sarah said that was so special for her. Sarah has taken this experience in her stride and is refreshingly humble about her great success. Lee-Anne said

that she was so proud because most the kids on stage held their own on stage with the professionals and that they blended in so well. There were originally only 25 shows scheduled, however these were extended by 5 more. Those extra shows sold out in two days! One of the things Sarah says she won’t miss is the secret mic pack. It’s a wire that ran from under her dress, up her back, under her wig and then was taped down onto her forehead. When it came time to remove it, they would just rip it off! “I won’t’ miss that at all!” she says pulling a funny face. I laughed. Lee-Anne very proudly asked Sarah to sing for me. At the risk of not looking like a complete fool, it took all my willpower not to gape at her. I was dumbstruck at the strength and clarity of her young voice had when she broke out in the chorus of Maybe, the goosebumps attacked my arms! It was one of the most incredible moments I have and will cherish that. Sarah has enormous talent and I witnessed it being unleashed in a brief minute. I dare say, watch this space because this young lady is going to obliterate the stages of this world.

Ingredients: • 2 cups fresh squeezed lemon juice (around 9-10 large lemons) • 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 cups superfine sugar • 3 cups water (room temperature) • 5 cups ice water • 3-quart container with screw-on lid Preparation: 1. Squeeze the lemons. Roll lemons on the counter. Press hard! This will make juicing them much easier. Cut lemons in half. (An adult should cut them for kids who have not been taught how to cut safely.) Extract the juice using a juicer until you have 2 cups of lemon juice. 2. Mix the sugar. Add 3 cups of water and sugar to pitcher. Use the least amount first; you can always add more later. If you like your lemonade tart (as we do!), you won’t want to. Screw on lid and shake for 30 seconds or until sugar is dissolved. A minute or two after shaking the water should look clear. 3. Make lemonade! Add lemon juice pouring it through a small strainer or slotted spoon to catch the seeds. Don’t worry if you don’t catch them all. That’s how people know it’s homemade. If you like pulp scoops some of it out of the strainer and add it along with the ice water. Screw on lid and shake again. Refrigerate and then enjoy

By Sean Temple | www.fluxmotion.net instance, nociceptors fire as soon as the initial incision is made. They release a bath of chemicals that induces the nerves to carry the pain message to the brain. The chemicals collect in a part of the spinal cord called the dorsal horn and are released to the brain, where pain is registered. Even with general anaesthesia, a patient’s central nervous system remains alert and ushers pain messages back and forth from the nociceptor, through the nerves, into the spinal cord, and on to the brain. The brain responds by washing the spinal cord with glutamate, a chemical that rewires the central nervous system and creates a physical memory of pain.

men vs women

Y

es, I know that this debate has been raging on forever, but with society today demanding equality between the sexes — and rightly so, I might add — I thought that this was a question that needed some more looking into! 1. Childbirth. Say no more. If men had to go through this, we would have been extinct a long time ago. I don’t know a single male friend, or myself, that would even think of going down that road. This is a pain that only women can bear and, after observing the sacrifice and pain that a mother goes through to bring a bundle of joy into the world, the word RESPECT echoes around the arena. What makes this even more incredible is that I hear women say that they would go through it all again in a heartbeat. 2. Man flu. There is nothing more excruciating than this. The sore throat and fever is worse than anything known to any organism. Don’t ask us to try and do anything other than sleep or watch TV… well, maybe eat an ice cream to sooth the

raging pain and suffering. Well, that’s a man’s view anyway. In all seriousness, it might be better to try and untangle the mystery of pain first. Pain is incredibly difficult to test. There are so many overlays of societal and cultural norms and factors that make up the term ‘pain’ that it is difficult to put any biological basis on it. ‘It certainly could have a biological basis, but so far there is no way to test it,’ says Robert Gear, professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of California. Until the 1960s, it was widely believed that pain was a fixed nerve to brain, which would cause the brain to say PAIN. Subsequently, researchers found that, in fact, the brain could change or modify the nervous system. During the 1990s, there was a boom in pain research. What we now know is that pain begins when nociceptors — small, thin fibres located throughout the body in the peripheral nerves — register trauma to nearby tissue. During surgery, for

So how do you feel your pain? How men and women perceive pain and the physiological/social aspects of pain, and its effect in financial terms, would certainly be worthwhile knowing. The annual cost of pain in the U.S. is roughly $100 billion, including 515 million lost workdays, according to the American Pain Foundation. Approximately 25 million Americans per year suffer from acute pain due to injuries or surgery. Laboratory studies show a clear difference in pain tolerance levels between men and women. When healthy men and women are subjected to heat and other types of pain tests, women almost always report feeling discomfort first. However, before the egos out there start beating their chests and saying, ‘I told you so’, this only occurs when women are experiencing the phase just before ‘that time of the month’ or similar spells where they feel that they need to be ready to take on trauma or a painful period — women are wise enough not to wax their legs just before their periods. So pain isn’t greater for women — they are just wiser about taking on pain. So, when you see men and women training, just know that when it counts most, women will beat the men every time! Happy Women’s Month to all the ladies out there!
