I’m inspired! Not that I’m not generally a positive person and I admit that, when asked if I see the glass as half full or half empty, I don’t get the question...the right answer in my mind is, “Just exactly how much can I cram into the half that’s not filled?” because life is so full of opportunities and I just need to find half-filled glasses to put them into. Do I have enough energy to handle it all? That’s for a different editor’s letter!

My recent “boost” in inspiration comes off a series of good meetings, great interactions and an inspirational summit that I attended— all of which fed my soul and made me realise that there is something special when people interact. I often say that there is a certain magic that happens between the pages of a magazine and someone’s fingers when they read a magazine, as if the passion and energy we invest in the magazine is somehow transferred to the person reading it and they “sense”our effort. Lately I have come to believe that there is also something inspiring that happens when two or more people get together to share thoughts, feelings and ideas.

we’re wired to connect with others and, if our minds and hearts are open when we get together, it activates a bucket-full of positive triggers in us that put a bounce in our step and a sparkle in our eye. There is a dichotomy to this, though. If you read back, you’ll see that I said “good” fellowship. Make sure that the time you invest — and remember that time is a valuable asset — feeds you in whatever way you need to be inspired. If that’s not happening, then I believe you’re investing badly and you need to take a look at that. Fortunately our magazine is filled with a lot of inspiring, quality reading that will help you see what others are up to and how they do what they do. As always, we’ve had a great time putting it together, fussing over every centimetre of each page to make sure that we’re getting it right. Enjoy the read, be inspired and remember to connect with others. On that note, it’s time to get away from the desk and make a round of coffee for the team at the office — yep, even editors do it! iphone 5 The biggest news in the gadget world in the last couple of weeks is the much-anticipated announcement of the iPhone 5 by Apple. The announcement took place on 12 September in Los Angeles in a packed auditorium, filled with geeks and journalists alike. The iPhone 5 body has been re-engineered from the ground up, with Apple using micron technology to ensure seamless perfection in the design of the phone, and making it the slimmest, lightest and fastest iPhone to date. The screen size has been increased to a 1136px * 640px at a 326 ppi resolution. This means that applications can now run at a much bigger and higher resolution. The

camera remains at 8mp, but has been reengineered to ensure crisp,crystal-clear images. The phone has also been re-designed from a form-factor perspective and is now a measly 7.6mm thin, 123.8mm high and only 58.6mm wide, making it a comfortable fit for onehanded use. Although the iPhone 5 goes on sale in the US and other countries towards the end of September, no dates have been set for a South African release just yet. Having said that, judging by previous model releases, we should see the iPhone 5 hit our shores before Santa arrives, making it the perfect Christmas gift (hint-hint!).

Ballito MY TOWN

my town

Dj Ewan DJ Ewan has a passion for life, love and people which is felt by everyone he meets. He has always had a deep-rooted love for our little town stemming from the countless childhood holidays spent here. Currently campus pastor at the wellknown Grace Church in Ballito, DJ comes from a background in retail and IT. After meeting his wife on a church mission trip to Mozambique, he proposed to her two years later. He and Lichelle and their kids are now a happy family of four. This is DJ’s town and this is what he likes to do in it!

Workout: Ashton College’s pool is where you will find me most afternoons, occasionally we all head to Thompson’s tidal pool for a change of scenery. I love swimming.

Go on a date: Not at all romantic, but with us becoming a family of four, we have had to adapt, so lately we grab something from The Fish & Chip Company at Tiffany’s Centre (this could raise a red flag requiring action on my part).

Eat brunch: Zaras - I simply love the owner’s creative menu and her effervescent personality. I know I will get a good meal.

Take a walk: Ballito promenade gives me the opportunity to walk with my family and usually, as a bonus, to bump into a few familiar faces along the path.

Grab a drink with the mates: This generally happens at braais, but Mamma G’s is a cool place for a beer and pizza or pasta with the boys.

Spend time with family: Thompson’s bay - a great, small beach, affording our family the chance to have beach fun. I love floating my 18month old son around the massive tidal pool.

Watch the rugga: At my parents home here in Ballito. Gives me time to hang out with the “old-man” and they get to see their grandson.

It’s simple with only 2 things to do. Read the instructions below and you’ll be sorted. Do you ever wish you could make a difference in the lives of others but you just don’t know where to start? This year the teams at FabMags and Vision153 have joined forces to do something for those families on the North Coast that don’t get to experience the real spirit of Christmas as much as the rest of us do. Looking for an innovative and fresh way to get people involved, FabMags came up with a unique concept - Faces for Christmas. FabMags launched the first edition of what is planned to be an annual tradition called Faces for Christmas, which invites all the amazing people of the North Coast to become cover models. Well it’s more like one of many cover models, showing their commitment to lighting the lives of those that need love, compassion and kindness over Christmas. This is accomplished through a donation of R100.00 when you send through your photo and take up one of 140 spaces on the magazine cover.

The partnership of FabMags and Vision153 is well suited, allowing two passionate teams to use what they’re good at to ensure that every cent raised is put to good use. As an experienced publisher and owner of The Ballito magazine, FabMags will manage the process of designing the cover and ensuring everyone’s picture looks as good as it can when the magazine is printed. NPO company Vision153 helps orphans and widows on the North Coast and will be able to ‘stretch’ the money raised to make sure it touches the lives of as many as possible, which is something they do on a daily basis. That’s it! Once we receive your photo and donation you’ll have made a difference by bringing some light to someones Christmas through a simple act of kindness. We look forward to seeing you on the cover of the December edition of The Ballito Magazine.

Send a good quality photo of yourself (head and shoulders will work) to the email faces@fabmags.co.za Make a donation of R100.00 to ensure your picture is included. You can make payment through the following options; Bank Transfer – use your email or name/surname as a reference or Drop R100.00 at our offices in Silverstone Way, Douglas Crowe Road in Ballito Spaces are limited so make sure you get your pics in soon!

Ballito Ballito stuff you should know

stuff you should know

It’s amazing to think that skateboarding started in the 50s! With a renewed interest in skateboarding, especially amongst our kids here in Ballito, we thought it would be worthwhile to discover a little more about these oh-so-familiar boards and how they actually work. Start with the Deck The deck is the top of the skateboard on which the skater stands. Modern decks vary in size, but most are between 18 to 27 centimetres wide — the wider the deck, the greater the stability. Most decks are between 71 and 84 centimetres long, although the popular Penny board is only 55 centimetres. The longboard, just as in surfing, has a longer deck that can stretch up to 150 centimetres. Longboards are great for downhill riding, sliding — an activity you’d probably prefer not to see your kids do — or just cruising and in some cases skaters skate on looser trucks to get the feeling of surfing. Connect with the Trucks If you’re wondering what that metal piece is that connects the board (the deck, remember) to the wheels, well, it’s called the truck. The positioning of the two trucks, and ultimately the wheels, can affect the ride of the board. Trucks that are too wide can make doing tricks difficult and can cause the wheels to get in the way when the skateboard is being ridden. Trucks that are too small can make it hard to maintain stability and can cause wheel-bite to occur when turning.

18

bring the indoors, outdoors no matter the weather

It’s the trucks and, more importantly, their bushings, which help make a skateboard turn and not the wheels. Roll with the Wheels The wheels of a skateboard, usually made of polyurethane, come in many different sizes, colours and shapes to suit different types of skating. Larger sizes roll faster and also move more easily over cracks in the pavement, while smaller sizes keep the board closer to the ground, require less force to get going and produce a lower centre of gravity, but also make for a slower top speed. Street skaters prefer smaller wheels as small wheels with lighter trucks can make tricks like kick-flips and other flip tricks easier by keeping the centre of gravity of the skateboard closer to the deck, which makes the deck easier to spin. Stay on with Grip Tape Grip tape is normally paper or fabric which sticks to the top of the deck. The grip, similar to fine sandpaper, makes sure the skater stays “stuck” to the board when he wants to and connects properly when doing tricks and landing. There is a lot more to know when it comes to skateboards, like bum-tails, flat-nose riders, drop-through decks, Penny’s, goofy and mongo’s, but we reckon that if you need that level of detail you’re probably already a keen skateboarder and could teach us a thing or two.

Ballito feature

The gap between leaving school or finishing varsity and starting a career is more like a chasm. For those of you finishing your final exams at the end of this year, I wish you good luck, whether you are writing your matric exams or completing your degree or diploma, as many of you will be looking for work next year.

20

21

Ballito feature Graduates are finding it incredibly hard to find work and one in two young South Africans are unemployed, with the unemployment rate for graduates double that of the national unemployment rate, which at present stands at 24 percent. Roughly three million young adults still live at home with their parents and every day that graduates remain unemployed, the more unemployable they become.

Not great reading, I know. Yes, we live in tough economic times and yes, jobs are hard to come by. However, there are ways to increase your chances of finding permanent employment. As with anything in life, in order to succeed you need to have the right tools, you need to be prepared and you need to have focus. Graduates really don’t have anyone in their corner coaching them on the proper way to go out and find work. Finding a job in today’s market is a job in itself. It takes dedication, a positive attitude and an understanding of what needs to be done. Recruiters and HR managers are extremely busy people who have a responsibility to

their clients to find the very best possible candidates out there. It’s a job that requires them to work quickly and efficiently. They have an eye for detail and become very, very good at sorting the bad from the good. Let me explain: In order to find employment, you need to get the basics right. First and foremost is your CV, which needs to be structured, error-free, clean and easy to read, with your contact details visible immediately. A good proportion of the CVs that I receive are horrendous! They are error-strewn, with different fonts, clutter and very little substance. Such CVs go straight to the bottom of a very big pile. It might sound harsh, but you have to understand that this is the first contact we have with you, the candidate. You need to ensure that your CV is checked and doublechecked before you send it through. You need to be specific when applying for a job advertised on the Internet or in the newspaper and do not send your CV without a covering letter. The covering letter should give a brief description of your skills and the reasons why you believe you are suitable for the position. If there is a reference number in the advert, make sure that you put that in the subject line. Again your contact details need to be prominent. Another hugely important factor when looking for a job is the way you present yourself and the outfit you wear….

“Human Resources professionals estimate that 95 percent of people dress inappropriately for their jobs!” After years of preparing for a professional career, it can come as a bit of a shock to find that you may still not be ready to enter the “real” world of corporate positioning. No matter how impeccable your credentials, how unassailable your academic references, if something is missing from your personal presentation (non-verbal Image), you’re just not ready to play the game. Coming out of the cocoon of academia means that it’s also time to shed your student image, no matter how comfortable it’s been. The way we choose to dress ourselves says a lot about who we are. In today’s highly competitive job and business market, we cannot afford to not consider this. You never get a second chance to make a first impression and, on average, 60 percent of that first impression is created through our “visual image”. We are our own greatest asset! At work, you are the brand and your look is your logo. The effort you put into choosing clothes that reflect who you are sends a clear message about what you have to offer and where you want to go. It gives you control of your identity or at least influences others’

Sometimes it works to take a light hearted look at what you shouldn’t be doing or wearing to your next interview. These tips, oddly enough, need to be written because someone, somewhere, actually pitched up to an interview without following these sound tips. If you think you’re in need of extra help, get hold of our expert image consultant, Manuella Botha (details on opposite page) or drop us an email at help@fabmags. co.za and we’ll pass it along to her for you and will post answers to questions on our news website www.ballitonews.co.za

22

impression of it. I firmly believe that you "act" like you dress and that the way you and your colleagues dress can say as much about your business as the quality of the work you do. For customers to have confidence in your services and products, they need to have confidence in you. Many men and women shoot themselves in the foot simply because they do not look the part either personally or professionally. YOU ARE YOUR MESSAGE! Why not be the BEST! The way you dress precedes your words and provides your impact, from fit colour and style. A poor image is self-defeating and gets in the way of reflecting your true qualities and abilities! Your grooming provides your polish, something which is often overlooked.

NOT THE BEST CHOICE

Your manners reflect your social standing. Your body language also forms part of your non-verbal image. Did you know that your body language can say more about you than your words during a job interview? The importance of body language is often mentioned, but doesn't always get the attention it deserves. After all, before a word has even been spoken, your body language will have already given people their first impression of you. Learn to speak through your appearance and body language and create a positive impression so that you get the job! These are the first steps of the process. In the next issue we will discuss in more detail how to prepare for your interview and questions you should be ready for.

Ballito business

T

here are very few signs in and around Ballito that Dawie Kruger and Martin Bernardu, owners of the local business named Sign Zone, haven’t made. The business started in 2005, around the time that the small holiday town of Ballito was riding a growth wave that had it pouted as one of the fastest growing towns in the country, and along with that came commercial businesses that needed help with branding and signage. It was good timing for the two local businessmen and the journey from there is all good news. Interested in the business behind the signs I met with Dawie at Zara’s and got to chat to him about his background and how the business found its feet. It was a great interview with a centred, entrepreneurial businessman who loves living on the North Coast and believes good business means having good relationships.

24

Share a little about yourself with us. I grew up in Pretoria and I’m a self confessed Blue Bull supporter. That comes from watching rugby there as a young boy and seeing rugby legends play the game. After school I studied electronics at Technikon through a company bursary but wasn’t able to work for them so I made the move from Pretoria to the Wild Coast to work at the Wild Coast Casino. My early career was in the casino industry and I moved around a bit working at places like Fish River Sun, a casino in Turkey, Leopard Rock Casino in Zimbabwe, the Carasol and even Sibaya. There was so much I learnt, from the technical stuff to being involved in managing projects and even running the casino business. More importantly though is that I’m blessed with two beautiful children and I’ve been happily married for 18 years to Sharon, my wife.

25

Ballito business How did you go from Casino’s to Sign Zone? I’ve always been entrepreneurial. I did a business degree at UCT while still with Sun International which was focused on the gaming industry. It was really well structured and at a very detailed and executive. After doing that I realised I wanted to be responsible for my own destiny and I wanted to apply what I had learnt to charter my own course in life. The development programme definitely sparked something in me that made me realise that what I was doing wasn’t where I wanted to be for the next 30 years. I was already living on the coast and the opportunity presented itself to start Sign Zone with Martin, so we went for it. We started at around the same time as Lifestyle Centre and we got involved with most of the branding and signage in the centre. Bruce has used us from those early days and we’re grateful for their support. We even do the big glass window next to Edgars which is a big project and we were excited to beat Jo’burg based companies to brand the area. It’s a niche type of thing to get done and Bruce has been great in support of a local business that he trusts. How does the partnership work? We both have our strengths and we work to those. I focus on business direction and the

financial side while Martin is the “do-er” and he makes sure things get done. The partnership works because we complement each other working off a foundation of total respect. I met Martin in the casino business and we’ve worked together in most ventures so we’ve got a great track record as a partnership and we believe it’s like a marriage, it takes lots of communication and alignment. Sign Zone isn’t only about signs is it? What else do you do or have you done? We’ve also helped many businesses come up with the full branding package when they started out, designing their logos to line up with the type of business they want to create and place themselves in the local market. When we do it, it’s included pretty much all their graphic requirements and signage. The only thing we haven’t done is print business cards otherwise its included shop front signage, vehicle wrapping and sand blasting – pretty much everything. We also do in store branding and custom wall papers - that’s something we do for Dischem throughout KZN and we also do work for BBM Mica. Interestingly our first sign we ever did was for a development here in Ballito, GreenGream, and it was when they started selling houses in Port Zimbali.

Running a business is Ballito is very different to the corporate world you came from. Do you sometimes miss it? I don’t have any ambition to live or work in Jo’burg anymore. I found out it’s possible to do very similar business here in Ballito than in Jo’burg and you can do it without having to be stuck in traffic plus I also get a lot more time to spend with my family. Living at the coast also allows for a different lifestyle that includes the ability to make more time for the things that are important – family, Faith and friends. There is a realization that in the end I don’t get to take the things I’ve accumulated with me, what counts is about quality time with the people I care for and love and doing that, while owning a business in Ballito, means I don’t miss it at all. How did you get involved in TheWhoo, previously the Who’s Who? I bought Who’s Who from the son of elderly man named Willie, who started the directory in the late 80’s. The directory was focused on the businesses down at the bottom of Ballito, which was the busy part of town back then. We bought the directory when we moved down here in 2000 and we’ve been doing it ever since.

26

We were advertising in the directory when my wife owned a local travel business and when Willie sadly passed, we had made an offer to his son who had taken over the directory and wasn’t keen to keeping doing it. The directory is the oldest one in Ballito and we’ve just complete a new, fresh and exciting upgrade to the traditional product that everyone has got to know. There are a few other exciting improvements to the directory that people of Ballito will be excited by when it comes out later this year. What’s been your biggest business lesson as an entrepreneur? I’ve paid lots of school fees and learnt allot in running my own business! In casino there were a lot of procedures in place and people checking the checkers to make sure everything was done in a very specific way. Once I was out of that I learnt that there are some real benefits to the freedom of not doing that, but having some latitude. It’s less black and white and more shaded of grey – but with that freedom comes a little risk that needs to be managed.

We also learnt a few good lessons with the travel business about growth and scale. Scale isn’t always a good thing because with it comes increased overheads and if that’s not carefully thought through it could be detrimental to your business. And what advice would you give a new business opening in Ballito? Know what you getting into. Make sure you do the research and figure out all you need to know about what that business is and whether it can survive in Ballito. Being successful in the corporate world doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to be successful at something smaller on the North Coast. What lies ahead? Right now it remains Sign Zone. Martin and I are still enjoying it and we’re under God’s grace in our business. There is always opportunity that crosses your path and if that happens we’ll look at it and see if we should take it.

Ballito restaurant review

’Coz everyone needs a bit of sweet sin in their life!

We recently had the pleasure of experiencing lunch at the new “buzz” around town, Zoete Zonde— Flemish for Sweet Sin… and what a tantalizing experience it was! Owner Ingrid Van Regenmortel’s passion lies in the restaurant business and she just can’t imagine doing anything else. She has been in the industry since 2003, having previously been the owner of a lodge in St Lucia. Yearning for a change, however, she moved to Ballito and opened a coffee shop with a “sweet” twist. Even though Zoete Zonde is a great place to go for both breakfast and lunch, Ingrid urges locals to come and try out the range of sinful dessert options which she is currently focussing on. “We want to be different. Yes, we have great food, but our desserts and sweet treats are simply out of this world and something we feel makes us unique in Ballito,” says Ingrid. Although it has only been in business for about two months, the restaurant has been doing very well, especially at lunch times. The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable and ready to help with anything to make your visit a memorable one. The menu offers a variety of healthy (and perhaps not-so-healthy options) to suit every taste; kids are really well taken care of with a wide variety of savoury and sweet options.

The restaurant is very welcoming with a simple, rustic elegance and the food, which just kept on coming, was of top-class. For refreshments we ordered their freshlysqueezed juices — I love fruit juice, so freshly-squeezed is just like heaven to me! Must-tries are the apple and mint, pear and ginger and pineapple and carrot. The flavours blend so well together, making them incredibly delicious and thirst-quenching! For our starter, we shared a spinach and feta savoury pancake, which is two full-sized pancakes (made nice and light) filled with a creamy spinach and white cheese sauce. The strong flavour of the feta made it absolutely unbelievable. The portion is big and is made for a main course, but makes for a nice light snack if you share it. For mains we had the filled baguette with smoked chicken, avo, rocket, Philadelphia cheese and sweet chilli sauce — they don’t tell you this, but it comes standard with lettuce, tomatoes and julienne cucumber. The baguette portions are large (for a woman), so either have a voracious hunger on you or share with a friend. We also ordered the vegetarian pasta made with cauliflower, broccoli, carrot and baby marrows in a homemade mildly spicy tomato sauce, topped with mixed tree-nuts on top of tagliatelle.

This dish is excellent for vegetarians and comes in a nice sized portion — add the homemade fresh chillies and you’ve got a winning dish. After mains we were onto dessert. We decided to go with the house favourites which were the mixed fruit tart with a custard vanilla cream filling topped with fresh kiwi, melon, paw-paw and strawberries and, as if that wasn’t enough, you get whipped vanilla cream on the side. I really enjoyed this and the fresh fruit helped cut the sweetness, which was very refreshing. Then came the Bresilienne tart filled with baked vanilla custard and topped with caramelised almonds and whipped vanilla cream — this is definitely more for those with a sweet tooth, but is extraordinarily delicious, an absolute must-try! And then... no, we aren’t done… we topped it all off with the buttermilk chocolate cake with a Philadelphia cream cheese Icing — chocoholics will do their nut for this moistly mouth-watering cake. All in all, the experience was most enjoyable. Our waitress, Benny, was so helpful and entertaining, the food was exquisite and the pricing for the portion sizes was very fair. I will definitely be back for more sweet sin in the future! And, as Ingrid said to us, “Try something different — you’ll be surprised at how much you will like it!” 032 946 1527 Shop 14 , The Well, Albertina Way, Ballito

Al Pescatore Words Lorinda Scott

has stood the test of time Trevor Wolf and Al Pescatore are no newcomers to the restaurant industry — with 25 years’ experience (IN BALLITO) behind them they are a force with staying power to be reckoned with! What I love is Trevor’s passion! He radiates such an amazing energy when it comes to food and his weird and wonderful creations while still managing to keep one eye on the surf (his other passion).

Wow, I just want to try everything that Trevor suggests! Not a chef by trade, but someone with a passion for food and his customers that is very obvious, he tries out new ideas all the time, so his “specials” are just that. The special that he recommended was a crepe filled with seafood and topped with banana and a curry-mayo dressing. It was a weird option for a starter, but we were left with taste buds begging for more! We also tried

the Curry Made Three Ways — YUM! The Fish of the Day, prepared with a light sauce, was also amazing… simply stunning. Dessert is a ménage of the fantastic. The homemade strawberry ice cream, topped with berries and served inside a meringue was sinful, but it was a tough choice to decide whether to have it or the light, fluffy chocolate mousse made with orange liqueur. The food is good, really good and, as it was a perfect spring day, all in all it was a superb afternoon out. Ambience, vibe and service are great!! This is fine dining, yet unpretentious, with the option of stylish inside or casual outside seating with a view that surpasses anything else we have seen locally! If you’re in the mood for something a little different, visit Al Pescatore — you won’t be sorry!

Ballito community

making this happen, we’re hoping to help keep our Matrics safe during this time.

d to in m f o e c a e p g Givin rica. Af h t u o S r e v o l parents al Matric Rage, or any festival for that matter, can be sheer torture for parents. You want to trust your children but you know that trusting them is not always the main factor – it’s trusting everyone else that can be hardest of all. It’s really reassuring, then, to know that these days we have the Red Frogs as “guardian angels” watching over the little party-goers. We speak to the organizers from Red Frogs to find out a little bit more about these saviours of the night! Who exactly are the Red Frogs? This started in Australia, so how was it brought to S.A? Red Frogs is a support programme for young people ages 15-25. The aim of our volunteers is to be a positive peer presence in alcohol-fuelled environments, where excessive drinking can lead to dangerous and life-altering behaviours. Red Frogs started in 1997 on the Gold Coast in Australia, where thousands of Aussie school-leavers celebrate the end of school in much the same way as our Matrics in South Africa. In 2005, when a group of young people voluntarily started helping Matrics in Ballito they heard about Red Frogs in Australia who were running a similar programme. 2008 was the start of a collaboration which saw Red Frogs South Africa being launched in Ballito. We’ve learnt a great deal from the Australian experience

30

and have contextualized it to be relevant to our local setup. What do the Red Frogs offer and what is the main aim of the group? The main aim of Red Frogs is to offer practical, consistent support to young people in party environments. This ranges from walking people home, cooking them free pancakes, cleaning up their hotel rooms and handing out free bottles of water. These acts of service earn us the trust and respect of young people and so, when they face a challenging time or find themselves in trouble, the Red Frogs are there to walk them through it. Many youngsters are on holiday without their parents for the first time and can find themselves in stressful situations with no one to turn to. We’re able to get medical assistance for those who need it, liaise with the police and security, and generally look out for the Matrics with their best interests at heart. What events do you help out at? You’ll find Red Frogs volunteers in Matric holiday locations, festivals and universities around South Africa. This year we will be in Ballito and Umhlanga for two weeks during the Matric holiday season and in Plettenberg Bay for one week. With over 100 volunteers

How do you raise money to pay for everything? Red Frogs is a great way for the community to get involved in a positive way during these end-of-year celebrations. We’ve been blown away by how the community has contributed to making Red Frogs happen each year – we call them the Friends of the Red Frog. As a non-profit organisation, we depend on donations and sponsorships to run our programmes at universities, festivals and during Matric holidays. From large businesses that help with financial contributions, to supplying home-cooked meals for our volunteers, anyone can be a Friend of the Red Frog. Since its inception, have you noticed the changes at parties and festivals now that the Red Frogs are around to help? This is one of the most rewarding aspects of Red Frogs! Last year, we met with the Umhlali Police to discuss the upcoming Matric holiday parties in Ballito and their feedback was that having the Red Frogs there was a huge help. Club owners and festival organisers have noticed a decrease in brawls and fights and especially a decrease in the number of young girls walking home on their own. We firmly believe that the presence of the Red Frog Crew significantly diminishes some of the dangers present at these parties. The reputation of Red Frogs amongst young people is another indication that what we are doing is effective. Matrics come bouncing over to say “Hi!” when they see our crews out on the streets and we’re able to give them

advice about staying safe in the area. The best thing of all is when we see Matrics being there for each other, looking out for their friends, picking a designated sober person each night, and staying together instead of wandering off on their own. Most young people just want to have a good time and when they realize there are safe ways of doing that, they get on board.

hotel. They sat with her, counselled her and eventually helped arrange for her to get an early flight back to her parents. Our crew even went with her to the airport and saw her off safely. These are just some of the stories where we’ve seen the Red Frogs making an impact at critical times in young people’s lives. If my child was going to Rage, how would I go about getting the Red Frogs to help/ look out for my child? First of all, we’d like to encourage all Matrics and parents to visit our website, www.redfrogs.co.za, where there are some helpful tips to read before you actually arrive at your Matric holiday destination. This advice can go a long way to preventing some of these issues!

Are there any stories of how a partygoer has been helped/saved thanks to a Red Frog? Last year in Umhlanga there was a girl who was experiencing druginduced psychosis. Her friends found a Red Frog Crew outside the hotel and the volunteers were able to calm the situation down and take the girl to hospital. They stayed with her until her parents were contacted and she was able to connect with them. In another situation, a girl’s you’ll be living mom phoned the in the same sp ace as Red Frogs hotline number as she was worried about her daughter. The girl was depressed and contemplating suicide, so the call centre sent a team over to her

In addition, we encourage everyone to put 076 RED FROG (076 733 3764) into their phones. The hotline is manned 24/7 during the Matric holiday season. Matrics can book a pancake breakfast, or parents can request a visit to their child’s hotel from a Red Frog Crew.

photographers to look out for

Taryn van Rensburg There’s something about a good photograph that captures the imagination and enchants the eye, whether it’s because it’s a memory that will be forever frozen in time, or the fact that you can capture the most precious moments in someone’s life! I have always envied the way in which photographers view life — how they can find something aesthetically pleasing in even the most insignificant or (to the rest of us) less-thanattractive thing. We are so blessed in our small town to have some truly amazing photographers right here, all unique and different in their own way, but with one common underlying factor — they are all brilliant!

With this in mind, we have decided that during the next couple of months we will profile some of Ballito’s best photographers, people who we think that you should look out for when capturing that next special moment! In our first feature we are profiling Taryn van Rensburg, a photographer who is known for her unquestionable passion when it comes to her craft. With a natural flair for creativity and a background in design, she has become a photographer to be reckoned with. Specializing in maternal, infant and child portraits, Taryn van Rensburg is this month’s local photographer to look out for!

Tell us a little bit about yourself? I am a down-to-earth, everyday girl, who loves a good giggle, strives for perfection, and am a bit of a neat freak. I am also the wife of an amazing husband and the mother to four wonderful children — three busy, loving boys, and a sweet daughter, now in Heaven. I am passionate about marriage and the value of family and, incidentally, I also happen to be a bit of a tea addict. How long have you been a photographer? I have always been fascinated by the art of photography and have been shooting professionally for about four years now. What or who got you started in photography and did you study? I bought my first SLR camera about 15 years ago before an epic trip through the southern countries of Africa, which got me hooked. I have a diploma in photography and have completed various international and local courses as well. The Internet has also provided a platform to hone specific techniques and being mildly OCD has given me many late nights of inspiration.

What gives you ideas or inspires you to create such amazing images? My aim is to showcase the authentic emotion and unique personality in every picture that I take. It is not so much about the picture, but the treasured story that it tells. My desire is that the “art” of what I do should evoke a deep emotional reaction to the subject. How would you describe your style? Contemporary portraiture, natural, simple and pure. What type of cameras do you shoot with? I shoot with Canon cameras, and love both of my 70-200mm 2.8 and 50mm 1.4 lenses. What is your favourite photographic accessory? It probably doesn’t count, but my favourite accessory is definitely my Olliclip for my iPhone… I am a bit of an iPhonegraphy junkie! Otherwise my macro lens for my DSLR is also a firm favourite. How important is Photoshop to your final images? It is a powerful tool that I love using.

However, I firmly believe that it should only be used to enhance and should never replace sound camera technique and getting your image right in-camera. What is the best/favourite photo you’ve ever taken? The pic of the women crying. Photography is so subjective and photos should matter… speak personally to your heart. I love this photo because I understand the emotion behind the image, taken on one of my Beloved shoots. The realness and simplicity of this image shows that the moment mattered. Those are rare and magic moments — and are what the Beloved shoot is all about.

International design trends are moving away from mass produced and catalogued items and an appreciation for one-of-a-kind, personalized products has emerged. The new trend in design is most definitely turning to things local and, by supporting your local markets or antique shops, you’ll be sure to find that “special piece” to personalize your space. Recycle and re-use: Leading fabric houses are now supplying “green” fabrics by using recycled plastic bottles and car tyres. Reusing furniture is quite common. By reupholstering or re-spraying key pieces a new look can easily be achieved. Keep big pieces of furniture neutral — splashes of colour can be incorporated by using scatter cushions, accessories and art. Colour will always be “current” in our country and, with such cultural diversity plus the South African landscape as influences, one cannot go wrong. Coral tones are used often these days, with no rules as to what goes with what. The only trick is to keep your colours in the same tones. Whites and neutrals are

The selection of art is perhaps the most important single thing we do when decorating our homes. Often people decorate their homes with expensive furniture, according to the current trends. Then, after furnishing their homes, they start looking for art works to supplement the “feeling” they want their homes to portray. Should selecting the art work not be the starting point? Should we not start with art and build our interior decorating around that? Art is highly personal, it expresses who you are. The selection of art works should not be last on the list but first! It is your personal footprint. It conveys who you are and what your home represents, because art is really the essence of your home. Our selection of art conveys our life view — truly “a picture is worth a thousand words”.

38

Art work is not just for decorating empty space. It is the heart of your home. Even if you are not an art guru, it says something about you. Often well-decorated homes are spoiled by tasteless art. Choose art that both speaks to you and lifts the spirit of your home, brings balance and gives that extra dimension that adds quality to your life.

used to balance your spaces and allow them to “breathe”. Keep an eye on fashion trends. Colours and prints for interiors are mostly influenced by what’s on the runway. Prints are very hot right now and can be combined with no limitations. Geometric designs are seen all over, from fabrics to wallpaper and stripes will always have their place, while botanical prints are still popular. Typography has been around for a while and is not going anywhere soon. When it comes to designing or redoing a space, think outside the box. Don’t be scared — make it an enjoyable experience. As we always advise our clients: “No one else lives in the space but you”, so whatever you feel comfortable with, goes!

Living closer to nature and a focus on “going green” has become a global trend for homes today. Not only are we able to let nature in with large stacking doors and great, big open windows, but we are able to choose alternative eco-friendly products. Tiles that emulate other materials such as wood, stone or concrete are becoming increasingly popular and following this trend is a breakthrough in tiles for indoor and outdoor living. Porcelain “wooden” floor tiles give a unique touch to your bathroom, created by the realistic veins and rich shades of colour. They are an eco-friendly alternative for non-slip surfaces like walkways, swimming pool decks and outdoor entertainment areas. Porcelain stoneware does not fade in the sun, is manufactured with 100 percent natural raw materials and requires no maintenance, which make these tiles relatively cost effective. Whilst earth-inspired natural shades are still the most popular colours for bathrooms, splashes of colour can be added. Include brightly coloured, or even patterned tiles to create a feature wall or focus point under the shower rose or above the bath. Tiles with large graphic prints and mosaic tiles simulating patterned wall paper are becoming popular and are not limited to bathrooms, being seen more frequently nowadays on bigger wall areas such as dining rooms and bedrooms. With it being “in” to have your own quirky style throughout your house, manufacturers are offering a wide range of tiles to cater to one’s personal taste. We see a revival of 3D-patterned tiles cut into various patterns creating sculptural and three-dimensional tiles following the “old is new” trend where, thanks to advanced design and printing processes, objects no longer need to conform to a flat surface or twodimensional aspect. This 3D futuristic approach creates a completely visual and tactile tile design experience that we predict will become widely accepted and adopted in the near future. Accentuate your individual style; visit our showroom in Ballito today!

With our festive season around the corner and with being blessed with the best possible climate on the planet, I would say that the latest trend would be to extend our homes, by furnishing our outdoor areas and being able to utilise these areas to their fullest potential. The good news is that now there is a locally manufactured product from Alifurn, that is 100% recyclable, eco-friendly and woven by our very own 'community workers', who desperately need our support. This polyethylene product contains two UV stabilisers to prevent fading and cracking and is totally weatherproof, thereby withstanding our harsh African climate. There is a stunning range of colours to choose from and I have actually had mine colour matched to allow for continuity of my base colour throughout my home, extending through to the outdoor area. Style and designs vary from modern, minimalistic and classic, catering to the individuals taste and preference and can also be custom made to fit your particular area.

A kitted out outdoor area offers you a 'lifestyle' that enhances your life drastically. Because of my outdoor area offering me comfort and convenience, I honestly find that I spend most of my leisure time at home and so does my daughter and all her friends. What more could I ask for?

A home grown product, which is able to withstand our harsh climate, custom made, at such reasonable prices. FABULOUS. As for the cushions, Hertex holds a number of outdoor ranges at very reasonable prices that have very interesting colours and designs.

Ballito beauty review

I have never been one for a day out at the beauty salon, but then again I’m still young and haven’t seen or had a real need for weekly pampering… UNTIL NOW! I recently went to Beyond Beauty at Sanhall Park and had (and this is NOT an exaggeration) the most amazing salon treatment ever!

Julanda Lotriet, the owner and moving force behind the all-natural concept that is Beyond Beauty, totally believes in the power of her products and genuinely wants people to use them, not for her benefit, but for their own. Julanda studied at the Tina Schöltz Academy in Potchefstroom which, besides being an internationally-recognized academy, is also known as a leader in skincare and health therapy all over the world. There she gained the highest qualification you can achieve in health and beauty therapy, a three-year Advanced Diploma in Somatology, and, in addition, she also has a CIDESCO International Diploma. With a wealth of experience under her belt after working on a cruise ship for two years and then at Hotel Izulu for over five years, Julanda decided that it was time to open her very own salon, Beyond Beauty. What I loved about my time at Beyond Beauty is that you aren’t made to feel rushed, as if they are whipping through clients to make a quick buck. You really are made to feel as if your health and satisfaction is a priority. We sat down for a 10-minute consultation during which she went through a thorough checklist to decide what type of treatment I needed. What she deduced from my “test” was that I’m uneducated when it comes to the facial products I use – I chop and change, mix and match, and have no idea what I’m doing, she educates you on what’s best for your skin. She also realised that I have a lot of tension in my neck and shoulders which affects my spine and that I have abdominal problems which can easily be helped by regularly

42

massaging Lilian Terry Abdocarm oils on my stomach.

What I absolutely love is that every product she stocks and uses are 100 percent natural and I’m not talking about your store-bought “‘O’ Natural” which is about 70 percent natural, with the rest consisting of possibly harmful chemicals. The Lilian Terry range that she uses for her massages is a South African aroma homeopathic product; the aroma reacts to heat and carries the homeopathic ingredients to the affected areas, relieving you of your aches and pains. Her massages are something else entirely! She uses her whole arm and really gets into those knots and in addition uses Bellabaci Cups,a modern version of an ancient Chinese cupping treatment. Those little cups are a brilliant innovation that can reduce cellulite (oh, yes!), improve blood circulation and safely release toxins and inflammation from the body. Julanda uses Dr Baumann facial products which are the only Bionome products sold in the world. This means they are free of chemical preservatives, have no parabens or mineral oils, no perfume, no colourants, no oxygen, no testing on animals, no paper packaging, are environmentally friendly… and the list goes on! The products are 100 percent compatible with ANY skin type. This German range was launched by two doctors who worked with burn victims and, through their studies found out exactly what skin needs for it to do well and used their findings to create a healthy range of products, from makeup to baby, hair and facial products.. After my treatments it was extremely difficult to go back to reality! I felt so relaxed and renewed; this is something I would go back for again. My skin has never ever felt and looked so healthy, so fresh and rejuvenated – Dr Baumann is definitely becoming my new best friend! 032 586 3220 | 1 Kirsty Close Sanhall Park No 9 | Ballito

Note: Beyond beauty is giving away 100 free facials to the first 100 new clients to book a facial. The special lasts until the end of November and Booking is essential!

A

little over a year later visiting this fabulous beauty salon again - and being pampered from tip to toe - I am amazed that nothing has changed, in a very good way. They are still as quick and efficient as they always are, always classy, always homely and always busy without the busyness!! I love visiting here and enjoying their cappuccino which everybody else wishes they could perfect!! This salon is so organised and it seems like Kate and Lindy are the perfect business partners with everything having its place (but is flexible enough to have hair and nails done at the same time) with 4 nail therapists and 3 hair techno fundi’s plus 3 assistants and Megan who does make up for special occasions and handles reception. Kate only uses the best “tried and tested” products such as Wella, L’Oreal, the SP range and Wella Professional shampoo’s. New to Wella is Wella Illuming colour, it is a fantastic colour and Kate can’t say enough about it!! My new colour looks and feels fantastic. I love their basin area (weird hey?!) but it is so calm and relaxing plus their basin’s are really comfortable with a lying chair. The head massage is always the best and I love the fact that everyone seems to just know what

needs to be done in a really calm way which delivers such a relaxing experience. Every detail within the whole salon complements the “area of work” so that the staff can work with ease. Lindy has been doing my nails for years now and well she is just so good. She is fast, efficient, such a perfectionist and her staff are trained the same way which means my nails always turn out just perfect. I had the Gelish pedicure done, which is new for me and it’s so pretty. I’m very used to my French Pedi so having colour for summer is actually nice again. Lindy has the same drive and perfectionist streak as Kate and she too only uses the best products for her clients, namely the NSI range. I’m always pleasantly surprised at the speed at which they work, I’m used to a standard 4 hours for my hair but whenever I go to KL Studios the whole lot (hair, colour, cut and flat iron plus nails, pedicure and paint) takes only of 3 1/2 hours, which really impresses me!! The Salon covers all your hair needs, colour, cut, occasions, or just a plain was and flat iron (for the lazy me’s of the world) plus nails from tips to toes, maintenance, manicures and pedicures, acrylic, gel and gelish paint are all available. Give them a call and make a booking!

Ballito car review

Every morning the wicked step-mother would stand in front of the mirror and say, ‘Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?’ The mirror always answered, ‘thee,’ until one day it said that Snow White was the fairest one of all. In this scenario, I have cast Snow White as the frugal, clean 4 cylinder Jaguar XF 2.2 Diesel. The role of the evil, wicked queen is played by the snarling supercharged V8 Jaguar XF-R. But even Snow White knows that simply making a car faster doesn’t necessarily make it better. The 2.2-litre diesel Jaguar XF, with the six-speed automatic gearbox is fast, sophisticated, comfortable, and for a Jaguar, fairly affordable. Admittedly, Jaguar is about 15 years late for the four-cylinder diesel party, allowing BMW’s 520D to lead the march. It is attractive, efficient, and reliable and it sells at a good price. So how does Jaguars’ first four cylinder model fair? The sheet metal in this latest iteration of the XF benefits from some of Ian Callum’s subtle styling mods with a wider, more attractive mouth and a set of raised eyebrows over the headlamps. There’s a curvaceous new

44

bonnet, lower grilles and Aston Martinesque side vents in the wings. The XF’s cabin was always a sumptuous place to be and a pleasant change from the dark functionality of the default German saloons. After all, part of Jaguars’ unique identity is that it is a welcome differentiation from Audi, BMW and Mercedes and this identifiable essence is evident here. Mated to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, it drives the rear wheels to provide predictable, decent handling. Without doubt, this is the most efficient Jaguar to date and it drives pretty well, too. Steering is light and accurate and may be weighted up by deploying the Sport button, which also changes the gearbox behaviour to hold on to each gear for longer. It rides comfortably, handles well at low speeds and is reasonably responsive and rewarding at high speeds. Does that mean the brazen step-mother, the supercharged V8 feels the unbearable weight of expectation heaped upon its broad haunches? To look at, it’s everything I expect from a fast Jaguar. It looks like a Jag with substance, is pretty and not too shouty. Slightly lower stance, quad exhausts, a discrete boot spoiler, a couple of sculpted

side skirts, a modest splash of ‘R' logos point to its 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds capability. With the 80 to 112km/h in-gear sprint dispatched in just 1.9 seconds it’s quicker than most. Does that mean the Mercedes E63, BMW M5 and Audi RS6 take on the roll of Snow White’s Dwarves? Not really, because they appeal to different markets. The XF-R’s not trying to be an overtly hard-core sports car. The industrial strength supercharger helps the car make 625Nm of torque from 2,500rpm gives monstrous, lag-free urge without having to downshift. A derestricted XFR would hit around 312km/h. Adaptive Dynamics and the new Active Differential Control means the car floats like a limousine whilst the ‘Handling Functionality' mode is just right for an evil, wicked, fast cross country blast. Like the XF D, Jaguar has not tried to emulate the appeal of their formidable German opposition, but they have retained and enhanced their ‘Britishness’, making it a better, defined package as a result. The truth is that the XFR and XF Diesel demonstrates the Jaguar brand resurgence and its clear understanding of what it stands for. So, is the XF-R the evil queen and the XF Diesel, Snow White? You bet, but in this case, both are fair and lovely.

When Spring comes around we all tend to have this urge to clear out the junk and excess we have collected during the lazy, cold winter months. This makes us feel rejuvenated and ready to take on the fun and excitement of the Spring and Summer months again. I always find it very interesting that we only really focus on the physical spring clean, so why not take some time to do some emotional and mental spring cleaning as well.

There is so much more to life than just the physical stuff and day to day things that go on around us but we don’t tend to focus on these at all. Unless of course we believe in setting goals and have plotted a course for ourselves. I often hear people complaining that they don’t have the time to do the things they want to do, or that they spend so much time doing things they don’t want to for other people. Believe it or not, if you took some

time to spring clean your life, you would understand exactly what YOUR priorities are and thereby give these YOUR attention and you would have the time to do the things you want to do. Easier said than done, I hear you say. Yes it is. As with anything in life, if you have the right tools and know how, you can do anything. This exercise takes time to reflect inward and sometimes ask yourself some tough questions, but you do need to do the work in order to start making changes in your cluttered and unhappy life. It doesn’t have to be a “turn over a new forest” exercise, sometimes just changing one thing impacts and snowballs into other things and as you start achieving the things you want to achieve, your momentum grows. One of my favourite clichés that you hear is, how can you get to your destination if

you don’t know where you are going. It really is true. When you wake up on a particular day and don’t have a purpose for that day, you achieve nothing, but when you wake up saying, I want to spend 2 hours clearing out the study, or an hour planting a herb garden or sorting out and organizing your personal documents, you will know at the end of that day that you have achieved something specific. We have to know what we want out of life first in order to decide what our priorities are and this is very much an exercise that forces you to look at your wants and needs and not anyone else’s but you also need to be disciplined and strict with yourself and those around you, if you want to live a life that will allow you to skid into the destination having had the time of your life!!

great memory, making learning easier and getting through more studying in less time. Who wouldn’t be interested? Ashton International College recently hosted the first SA Schools Memory Champs and at the same time made the school the new home of Powerstudy. Having heard him on ECR many of us are familiar with Daren Denholm, founder of Powerstudy, who has competed in five consecutive World Memory Championships. We got to catch up with Daren, AndrÊ Buys (CEO of Ashton International) and Dominic O'Brien (Head of Ethics of the World Memory Sports Council). What is so important for kids about a good memory? Well, it starts with asking a question. Can you think back to having been taught how to remember information, how to learn or what memory is all about at school? It should be the first thing kids are taught.

Not always a memory champ, Darren also struggled before learning the skill of enhanced memory and struggled through his matric and nearly failed University. Today he helps boost memory, speed of learning and concerntration for those interested.

50

It’s not about learning how to remember boring lists of information, but rather how to store important information and facts that are needed for application — like formulas in maths or ratios in accounting or dates and events in history. Intelligence requires making connections between bits of information that you’ve stored, but it requires you to have that information retained and accessible. Why is it important to still remember information as so much information is available at our fingertips nowadays? We’re often told that education is about understanding rather than just collecting facts and information, but understanding comes from connecting concepts or information and the more you have of that, the more broadly you can develop conceptual thinking. Think of any piece of knowledge that you’ve gained in your lifetime that doesn’t involve the function of memory...well, you can’t. The game of Memory exercises your brain, which is a good thing, and using the skills we teach helps kids learn better. Does it help short term or long term? Both, but it’s also about knowing your “forgetting threshold”—how much information you can take in at one time and ensure that you retain it, which is different for all of us. Once you’ve consumed information up to your threshold (short term), you need to revise it because revision is an important step in learning and long term retention. Without revision, 80 percent of what you’ve learnt in a day is lost 24 hours later. Is this for all types of kids, both academic and sports-focused? When kids realise that developing good learning skills and their memory means that they can actually save time — that they can get through more, remember more and study more efficiently than before — they get really interested. The ability to store information

relates to anything you apply yourself to whether it’s academically-related or even sport. Interestingly, it builds self-confidence as well. Kids sometimes think that they can’t amass facts well, but once they’re able to remember 50 words or a list we give them, they realise that they actually have the ability to learn and remember stuff and do it well. André, how does this tie into Ashton? We’ve decided to incorporate these skills into the classroom and how the children learn moving forward. Darren’s offices will be based permanently at Ashton and this enhanced way of learning will hopefully be like brushing teeth — something the kids do every day. When it comes to options to help with exams and remembering what you’ve studied it’s clear that Powerstudy can help and now that it’s available right here on the North Coast it’s something to consider for our kids.

in the right direction Training is not there to stress you out; the gym is not there to scare you away or make you feel uncomfortable — it’s there to make you feel better about yourself, it’s there to build your self-confidence, boost your selfesteem, mould your body into its best possible shape, build you as an individual and give you longevity, less stress and a life filled with purpose and drive. It’s a life everyone wants, but most of us choose to sit on the couch instead of embracing longevity, embracing a healthy lifestyle, embracing fitness... You can’t leap a mountain in a day... Where people go wrong when trying to get into a health and fitness lifestyle nowadays is by trying to get it all done at once — trying to fit it all in to one day, from training to the diet planning. This inevitably results in stressing you out, so your stress levels get the better of you and you go back to all your favourite sugars, doing no training and falling back into your old, unhealthy eating habits. Do yourself a favour! You can’t leap a mountain in a day, so take the first step by getting out of the house and into the gym — any exercise is better than no exercise and by walking through those turnstiles you have accomplished more than sitting on your tush at home, feeding your beak with copious amounts of calories.

Words Wesley du Randt

health Ballito

Here’s a little professional advice to help you feel less lost at gym and more comfortable and confident with your training: Most people nowadays go for the summer look, right? Lose weight, tone up and lean out — the whole ripped effect. So why is everyone breaking up muscle groups and having so much rest in between exercises, unless your goal is to put on weight, to achieve muscle gain? Two muscle groups per day is old news… try incorporating full-body sessions on a daily basis; targeting two muscle groups or individual muscles will not achieve quick, maximum results for weight loss and toning. The more muscles you activate in one movement, the more muscles you activate in one session; the more energy you burn, the more calories you burn and the more calories you burn, the more fat you burn — simple! Adopt more of a “circuit”-style session by throwing in four exercises or more, with three sets (rounds) per station. This allows your heart rate to stay elevated in your fat burning zone, burning maximum calories. Two stations with four-plus exercises per station is more than sufficient to complete a full-body session, burning up all your body’s energy and tapping into those fat deposits! Within your circuits, try throwing in fewer single-joint exercises (e.g.: dumbbell biceps curls) and more multiplejoint movements (e.g.: squatting and dumbbell biceps curls or dumbbell biceps curls and shoulder presses, etc. Multiple-joint exercises burn up more energy and thus more calories than single-joint movements\exercises. Training is a way of life. Health and fitness is the path to longevity and it should be your path to success. If you are not first, you are last. Take the step, make the leap, get off of your tush and commit. It will change your life — it changed mine!

Ballito property

property

market focus By andreas wassenaar | principal - seeff dolphin coast andreasw@seeff.com

The beginning of the fourth quarter is a good time to take stock and reflect on the performance of the property market for the year to date and to get a sense of where we can reasonably expect the market to go over the next six months. If you live in the greater Ballito area you will understand how stressful it can be to try and get things done before the end of year shut down. The influx of visitors during December this year can be expected to be similar to last year – extreme. Judging by our holiday bookings of the Zimbali rental portfolio we operate, we are already at capacity, and receive daily enquiries for holiday accommodation over the peak December period. Zimbali Coastal Resort and Simbithi EcoEstate are the two largest estates within our area and represent a significant segment of the market. Together these estates have over 3,000 properties covering an area of over 800ha. A snapshot of the sales activity to date as measured by actual registered transfers indicates that Zimbali is slightly ahead if measured by total value of transactions and Simbithi is ahead if measured by the number of transactions. For the 2012 year to date there have been 39 registered sales within Zimbali to the value of R179,4m. These are split between 11 sectional title transfers to the value of R45,3m and 28 freehold transfers to the value of R134,1m. The average value of the Zimbali transactions is currently R6,779,718. An age analysis of recent (last 12 months) Zimbali purchasers reveals that 12% are aged over 65; 36% are aged between 50 and 64; 42% are aged between 36 and 49; and 10% are aged 18-35. For Simbithi there have been 114 registered sales for the year to date with

58

a total value of R162,2m. These sales can be split into the 35 sectional title transfers to the value of R72,9m and the 79 freehold transfers (mostly vacant land) to the value of R89,3m. The average value of a Simbithi transaction is currently R3,118,014. It is sometimes remarked that Zimbali property owners are generally much older than Simbithi property owners. However, when we perform a similar age analysis for recent Simbithi property purchasers, we not that 4% are aged over 65; 31% are aged between 50 and 64; 46% are aged between 36 and 49; and 19% are aged 18-35. The difference is therefore far more marginal than generally expected. The October 2012 edition of the published FNB Property Barometer provides evidence of a mild increase in the residential property demand activity indicator in the third quarter, which rose from the previous quarter’s 5.87 to 6.11 (on a scale of 1 to 10). Two of the most important indicators of demand in a residential property market are the length of time that a property remains on the market before it sells and the percentage of sellers required to drop their asking price in order to make a sale. Both of these statistics have “improved” (declined) over the past quarter. The average time a property remains on the marked (on a national basis) has declined from 17 weeks and 4 days in the 2nd quarter to 15 weeks and 6 days in the 3rd quarter. The percentage of sellers accepting lower than the asking prices have declined from 87% in the previous quarter to 84% in the 3rd quarter. The average percentage drop in price has remained unchanged at -10%, which remains an improvement on the -13% recorded at the end of 2011. The length of time that a property remains on the market, using historical

measures as an average benchmark during a healthy market, is two months. A market in which 84% of all sellers have to drop their asking price to secure a sale is, based on historical data, very high. So on both these key measures of pricing realism, we can argue that we have some way to go before returning to a healthy market. We constantly advise our clients that realistic market pricing and the clear offer of value is the key to achieving a sale in the current market. Our macroeconomic status is generally positive, despite the fragile global economy and unresolved European debt crisis. The prime interest rate at 8.5% is the lowest it has been in four decades. Consumer Price Inflation is 5% (Aug 2012). Producer Price Inflation is down to 5.1% (Aug 2012). GDP growth is 2.7% (second quarter 2012). An analysis of the FNB Home Price Index shows that real house prices (adjusted for CPI Inflation) were -15.8% lower in August 2012 when compared to the “boom-period” peak reached in February 2008. In nominal terms prices were +14.2% higher as at August 2012. If we measure house price growth from 2000, real prices were still 64% higher as at August 2012, and nominal prices were +225.4% higher in September 2012. As a seller it therefore often depends when you bought a property, on how realistic your price may be and your resultant chances of securing a sale. As month-on-month house prices tend to track the country’s business cycle fairly well, the SARB Leading Business Cycle Indicator is a key statistic for property professionals to watch. The recently published indicator for July 2012 showed a +0.8% growth on the previous month, which followed four consecutive months of decline. This reversal of direction will hopefully translate into a more sustained increase in demand for residential property. Another good indicator of whether market conditions are improving is the level of first time homebuyers in the market. As this segment of the market is very sensitive to both the price and availability of mortgage debt finance, as market conditions improve, the level of first time buying improves in a cyclical manner. The recorded level of first time buying rose in the 3rd quarter to 26% of total buying, which was up from the 20% recorded in the 2nd quarter and reinforces the upward trend of this important indicator. The seasonality component of home buying is important and given the positive economic indicators with the warming of the weather as we head into our summer selling months, we have a strong sense of renewed optimism. Things are looking up!
