editors note

PUBLISHER Lorinda Scott | lorinda@fabmags.co.za EDITOR Justin Scott | justin@fabmags.co.za GRAPHIC DESIGN Daniel Rambaly | daniel@fabmags.co.za

Life happens in rhythms and cycles. Don’t turn the page if you think I’ve lost my marbles or found some loony, new world rule book — there is a point to this edition’s editor’s letter, I promise. This sage piece of advice came to me from a very close friend as I was contemplating the speed at which things do (or don’t) happen in our lives. While it’s obvious when you think about it, I find that many of us don’t take the time to think about exactly what phase we’re in in our lives and what is really realistic to expect from that phase. Have I lost you yet? I hope not! Think about it for a second. Just how much of our lives are governed or affected by rhythms and cycles? They’re everywhere. Feeding cycles for babies, school terms for parents, tides of the sea when we want to surf, presidential terms (good or bad), seasons of the year, crop cycles for farmers, magazine editions for publishers... One way or another our lives are governed by rhythms and cycles that happen around us that we have little or no influence over. We are a cycle in ourselves, either teens or young adults or young parents or grandparents. Each cycle brings with it rich, new lessons from which we learn and great opportunities to use the gifts given to us and so we grow through these periods of time. Sometimes we miss the opportunities to reap in a cycle, or we forget to sow when the time is right, but the fortunate thing is that cycles come around again, giving us a new chance to make right what we didn’t or couldn’t the first time round. And when they do, we are smarter, wiser and more able than the first time. Now I can’t tell you how long those rhythms and cycles take as they are different for each of us, but I can tell you that gaining an understanding of where you are in life relative to a cycle, really creates amazing perspective. As we head into the early months of the new year, remember that this may be your year to sow rather than to reap, or to maintain rather than to expand. It could be the end of a cycle for you and this is where you need to give it everything you’ve got, because all your hard work over years may be paying off. Whatever it is, we hope that the year ahead works out very well for you and we’ll be here to support you through all of it. To a great year ahead! Be safe and God Bless Justin Scott & the team

GADGETS

GIZMO’S

By Marc Forrest | www.marcforrest.com

TECNO MOBILE N3 Android Smartphone – R999 I recently came across a rather interesting “gadget” in the form of the Tecno Mobile N3 Android Smartphone. You may have never heard of Tecno Mobile, but they are currently one of the fastest growing Mobile handset manufacturers in Africa, with Nigeria & Kenya. Tecno Mobile is based in China and has a range of over 30 different devices aimed at the entry level pre-

paid market. What astounded me about the N3 Android Smartphone, was that it really didn’t feel or perform like an entry level phone. And at a cost of under R1,000 the phone is a steal for an entry level smartphone device. The Smartphone is quite unique in that it has a dual sim tray, which allows you to use 2 different sim cards. You can also select, through the software, which sim card should

be used for your data transfer or which sim card should be used for voice calls. This is a great option given the fierce competition from cellular network providers these days. The smartphone comes with built in 3G HSDPA, Built in FM Radio, Bluetooth & WiFi as well as fairly impressive 3.0MP camera. The phone comes pre-installed with Android 2.3.5 which albeit a bit of an older version of the operating system, definitely doesn’t disappoint. You have full access to the Google Play store which allows you to download over 500,000 apps. The phone comes pre-installed with a number of apps including Whatsapp, Facebook, Gmail, Office Doc viewer & Twitter amongst others. If you are looking for an entry into the rapidly growing smartphone market, this is the ideal device for you ! The phone is being retailed at R999 and for more information on where to purchase the phone, you can visit http://www.tecnomobile.co.za or email kzn@tecnomobile.co.za

OLLOCLIP - iPhone 5 If you haven’t heard of an app called Instagram yet, where have you been?? Instagram is a photography app which can be installed on iPhones & Android devices, which allows you to take photos on the go, edit them & share them instantaneously. The Instagram community is growing rapidly around the world and there are a number of groups being setup where these communities come together and take photos together. One of my favourite gadgets for my iPhone is the Olloclip. The Olloclip is

essentially an attachment which you can put on your iPhone and gives you 3 different lens types. The Fish Angle Lens is by far the most popular and adds a whole different dimension to your images, while the Wide Angle works like a charm when taking Panoramic photos. The secret though is the Macro lens, which can often take photos of things you never imagined seeing with the naked eye. The quality of the Olloclip is undeniably the best in the world and images are crystal clear when processed. This is

Richard

Where did it all come from?

There are various theories on the origin of Valentine's Day, but the most popular dates back to the time of the Roman Empire during the reign of Claudius II, 270 AD.

Claudius didn't want men to marry during wartime because he believed single men made better soldiers.

Bishop Valentine went against his wishes and performed secret wedding ceremonies. For this, Valentine was jailed and then then executed by order of the Emperor on February 14. While in jail, he wrote a love note to the jailor's daughter signing it, "From your Valentine." Sound familiar?

SMG Rocks! Words Storm catterick

New Mini dealership set to take your breath away On 14 January, the SMG Group proudly opened KZN’s very first Mini dealership. Situated on Umhlanga Rocks Drive, and appropriately for both the location and the vibey brand, it has been named SMG Rocks! A visit to the new dealership is set to become a truly unforgettable experience for all Miniacs. We speak to the dealer principal, Peter Caley, to find out what makes Mini on the Rocks feel as if you are entering a little piece of heaven. How has settling into the new business gone? The settling in has been relatively easy, apart from the usual teething problems. I’m sure that those who have already visited us will agree that SMG Rocks is at the cutting edge of motor retailing, not only in South Africa, but the world. This is a first, isn’t it, in terms of having a stand-alone Mini dealership in KZN? Correct. The time has come for Mini to stand on its own two feet. With the massive growth in our product range, as well as year-on-year increases in sales, the time had come for Mini to have its own dealership with its own identity. We understand you don’t just sell new vehicles. What other products and

16 |

w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

services do you offer? That’s right —, we have everything that a fully-fledged motor dealership should have and more. We sell new, used and non-franchise vehicles. We have a state-of-the-art service department with eight service bays. There is a Parts Department which is the only place in KZN where you can purchase original Mini parts. We also have an exclusive lifestyle boutique which offers all the latest fashions and accessories available from Mini. Then, last but not least, we also have in-house finance which makes buying a car at SMG Rocks a one-stop destination. Gone are the days when customers had to run between the dealer and their bank. Mini Finance also offers incredible finance deals from time to time, like the prime -5 percent we have running on selected demo models at the moment. The coffee shop is an awesome touch. What was the logic/thought behind it? Every dealership provides refreshments for its customers, but at SMG Rocks we wanted to be different and provide our customers, as well as the public, with something special and it doesn’t get much better than having a Vida e Caffé in-store. We want SMG Rocks to be a destination, a meeting point for “those in the know” so, even if you are not buying a car, you can simply visit SMG Rocks to sit on our deck and watch Umhlanga pass you by while sipping on your favourite coffee. You must have a great team. How did you bring everyone together (have they

worked together before or did you hunt them down)? We are very fortunate when it comes to personnel. We have a very experienced sales team headed up by Gary Cawood, who has many years of management experience. Our After-sales Department is managed by Robin Singh, who has almost 40 years’ experience in the BMW Group, so there is no shortage of knowledge when it comes to selling and servicing Minis. Everyone that works at SMG Rocks has been carefully handpicked to ensure that every interaction with our customers provides an excellent experience. The showroom reflects the brand’s energy. How do you keep that energy up with the team you have? It’s all about the people. The Mini sales agents are very different people from those to that you would find with other luxury brands. Mini is an iconic, chic brand and the vibe created in the showroom reflects that ideal. What do you want a potential customer to say once he’s visited the showroom? WOW! I want everyone that visits SMG Rocks to be blown away by their experience, whether it is by the vehicle upside down in the showroom, or the 3D Tetris blocks suspended from the roof, or any of the other cutting-edge features in our dealership. The SMG Rocks experience must be a “WOW” experience that people go home and talk about to their family and friends.

Behind the mike with the

Breakfast

Stack! Like many of you in KZN, I religiously listen to East Coast Radio’s hilarious Breakfast Stack every morning, whether it’s to catch up on the news, what’s happening with the traffic or to hear Darren and Sam’s banter or Dumi’s Sports Wave so, even if i missed the game, I can still join a convo as if I were truly invested in the sport. But what do we really know about the people behind the mike that entertain and feed us with important information without fail every day? Probably not much at all. So I hit the trusty Google toolbar but was still not satisfied. So, in true journo style, I decided that I needed to meet them and find out for myself so that you readers, like me, can get to know a little bit more about the people who take over the airwaves from 6 – 9 a.m! Now, just a word of warning. This is not the most conventional article, but then again there is absolutely nothing conventional about this team, which, to my mind, is what makes them amazing. They are manic, some, more than others, but there’s no denying that they are FUN! We chat to Darren Maule, Dumi Kunene, Natarah Nadesan and Sam Odonto from East Coast Radio’s Breakfast Stack.

umhlanga Profile

Being a morning show you have to get in quite early. Who is the eager beaver in the group? Darren: Well, George, our producer, is the first one in to do the polishing of ideas and story arches, etc. It’s not just about being on-air and coming in and start talking. There’s a lot more that goes on behind the scenes. Natarah: I usually get in about 4:30 in the morning and start doing my prep for the news for the day, making sure that we’ve got our main stories. This all happens before the show starts at 6:00 and, if a story breaks during the day, you have to take it as it comes and get it out there as soon as possible.

of-humour-deprived, so he can be a little bit snappy, but we know how to deal with it because we’ve all been in relationships with women before. Sam: Darren’s a real funny guy who, may I add, gets in last every day!

We strive to not be contrived. If something is too rehearsed or analysed it often comes out as fake.

Who’s the grumpiest morning person? I would be on a killing spree at 4:30!

So no Puza Thursdays for the Breakfast Stack?

Darren: We are all pretty chilled, so I would have to say George but, in his defence, it’s not because it’s the morning — he’s just generally grumpy. We are usually ready and raring to go with our game faces on. Occasionally Sam has to be up late at night watching an international football match and he has to get up even earlier for his hour-long show before the Breakfast Stack. By the time the show rolls around, he’s already worked for an hour, so he’s sleep-deprived, food-deprived and sense-

Dumi: Not a chance! Once you’ve been on the show for a while your body starts to reject any form of activity at night, especially “puzzaring”. Darren, being a comedian and an actor, used to get invited to all kinds of things. I’m not sure if people just stopped inviting him or if our producers stopped giving them to him? Hmmm.

22 |

w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

Natarah: The last thing you want to do is to get to the studio and, as you go on

air, your body crashes, making the show suffer. I think we’ve all learnt that it is very important to have a good night’s rest. Darren: In the beginning, coming from a stand-up world where my bed time was 1 or 2 a.m., I tried to burn the candle at both ends. Now, though, bedtime is considerably earlier — I get made fun of because I say doo-doo-time 8 o’clock! Do you guys get holidays? Darren: Well, there was this one time... at band camp! Sam: I think we did get a couple of days off in December? Darren: Sam, we got almost three weeks, buddy! Sam: Ja, dude, but you can’t count weekends! What is the role of the Breakfast team? Darren: We are here for active listeners who are up at 6 a.m. and getting ready for work, going to school and so on. They are invested in what’s happening in the news and what’s going on with the traffic and weather — these information bulletins are very important, so our responsibility is to pepper that information with good, fun story-telling.

profile umhlanga

Dumi: Just the role that a breakfast show plays makes us unique; we have to get people going and “jump-start” their morning. We also have five people on the show who couldn’t be more different from one another, which makes for a really entertaining show. Natarah: We are such an eclectic mix — it’s like we make up everything you could possibly want for breakfast — bacon, eggs, toast, sausage and fried tomatoes. Do you guys eat a lot of Mac Ds? Darren: The one time I went there and asked for a vodka and they’re like, “Um, we’re MacDonald’s”, so I was like, “OK. Can I have a MacVodka....?” mmmm they didn’t find me funny! What are your characters in this dysfunctional family?

What’s it like working and living by the ocean? Darren: I honestly feel sorry for people who do breakfast shows where there’s no ocean! When we knock off at 12 o’clock, we’ve got the whole afternoon in a place where there’s actually stuff to do in the afternoon — a walk on the beach or sitting at a coffee shop with a view and reading the paper. Funniest thing that’s ever happened on air? Darren: You know you get those movies or news bloopers on YouTube, and you watch them and laugh yourself silly but never think it’ll happen to you! Especially not to a person who is very eloquent and has really good diction. Natarah had just delivered some really good tips for dealing with hot days and I came back and said, “Thanks, Natarah, for those great tits”. I didn’t realise what I’d said and just carried on talking until Sam eventually fell off his chair from laughing

so hard. Then, of course, because it’s at the forefront of everyone’s mind, every time the word “tiPSSSS” came up in the show, everyone would, of course, say “tits”. When the mikes are off, what goes on behind the scenes? Darren: There’s a lot of stuff the listeners actually don’t hear when we cue the music, like the bit where I throw my chair across the room and start slapping Sam — it’s what we like to call a “Biaaaatch” slap. Then, we come back on air very demure and respectful because I’ve shown him who the dominant male is!

Darren: We let that happen organically and I don’t think we’re set in our roles/ characters — it’s nice that our characters can surprise you. Dumi is the jock and sports guru who also loves watching Cinema Nouveau movies. Then we have Natarah, who is married and the only female voice on the show, but she’s strong and her views and opinions are out there. Johan is the eldest in the group and an absolute legend in Durban radio. And then there’s Sam Odontu, a 27-yearold Nigerian via the UK, via Pretoria before settling in Durban but who’s not a fan of big bodies or a water-type guy. Sam: I choose not to swim in the sea like you would choose not jump into a lion’s cage — sensible! Best Breakfast? Darren: Eggs Benedict on English muffins. Dumi: Traditional English breakfast! Natarah: Scrambled eggs on brown toast with grilled tomatoes. And if anyone feels like bringing through some breakfast to us in the morning, we are game! Sam: Anything that’s edible — ha-ha.

How do you start off in radio? Dumi: Most of us, except Darren, started off by having a spot on smaller radio stations and there you gain experience.. Darren is one of the lucky few that landed it without ever having been on radio! What do you think makes the Breakfast Stack different from other shows?

Best place to eat in Umhlanga? Sam: Kauai at Gateway Darren: Hooters for their chicken wings. Natarah: Colcaccio or Tasha’s Dumi: Pizza Perfect and Chicken Perfect behind Gateway — their chicken is the best!

umhlanga hair Review

Words Lorinda Scott

The legendary hair salon

W

alking into the Terry Scott Hair Lab in La Lucia Mall was exciting! Terry Scott... the legend that has been the “hairdressing name of note” for 20-something years! Grant Harper, the creative director, did my hair while around us there was a funky bunch of staff, with lots of energy. Grant started the appointment by sitting down and chatting to me. As he studied my hair, he asked lots of questions, which told me that he wanted my hair to match everything else about me. Something unique, which I loved, is that they write your "specs" for the day on the mirror so that all the staff attending to you are aware of who you are and what you are having done. These details are then captured and updated on your client card before you leave. The salon uses mostly Wella products, which is a range that works exceptionally well with my hair, so I was a happy chappy. After some colour coding, Grant decided that he was going to go lighter with my hair and added colour foils leaning towards the cooler colours, using the new Wella Illumina Color, which is the latest in the range and a really amazing product .

26 |

w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

The look of the salon is sophisticated, featuring classic black and white, with crystal chandeliers. For busy men there is a funky barbershop area inside the salon for quick cut and go sessions. Grant chatted to me about training, stressing that in hairdressing education is the key to being successful. Salon product knowledge is vital The Terry Scott Salon also presents Kerastase ambassador training programmes and the staff are, of course, Wella colour journey ambassadors, so there is always new technology to keep them up to date with the latest trends. Terry is full of energy — he is demanding and has high expectations as he sets a standard that he insists must be maintained regarding training and knowledge, which keeps staff on their toes. Terry and Grant travel to London, usually in October, to get the latest fashion forecast for hair. This is always an amazing experience and they come back inspired and raring to go — they motivate their staff as they share these experiences and ideas with them and, by extension with their clients as well. Grant, as creative director,

monitors standards and makes sure that the salon meets expectations. He says that Terry is an amazing mentor who gives one the freedom to be creative. Educationwise, the salon uses the Wella programme and every Monday there is an open-door training session. There is a loyalty programme, which is a really nice touch (and the first time I have seen this in a hair salon), which is incentivised by visits and products bought. OK, back to the hair! After the colour there was a treatment using Kerastase Pixelist, followed by a really nice massage, which left my hair feeling amazing. I love the new colour tone! Grant then did a bit of a cut, leaving the length and voila, amazing hair! “Every color has a unique rhythm and beat: turn it up and see the Sound of Color”. ... Wella Color. Business umhlanga

Kristin and Sanjay Maharaj

Inspiring business couple Kristin and Sanjay Maharaj are an inspiring business couple from Umhlanga, investing a piece of themselves in their third “baby”, SR Maharaj Attorneys. Their business philosophy is to always give what the client would expect — a promise that they hope they’ll always be able to deliver on, when put to the test. We catch up with this impassioned couple to find out more about their entrepreneurial journey to success and to find out why they think that living in Umhlanga is like living in Paradise!

Tell us a bit about yourselves and your backgrounds that people might not know? Kristin and I have been married for going on eight years now. I proposed to her after only two months of dating. Our daughter is now two years’ old and we are expecting our second child in June. Kristin has lived in South Africa for nearly 10 years now and I have lived in KZN since I was a child. I studied at the University of Durban In Westville where I earned a BA and my LL.B.I then went on to work at the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg before opening my own practice, SR Maharaj Attorneys. Kristin has a BA in Development Studies with Spanish from the University of

Norwich (UK), an MA in Adult Education and a Ph D in Education. At present, Kristin and I are engaged in a business venture abroad which we foresee will have a direct benefit for business in South Africa. Where do you live in Umhlanga? We live close to the Gateway Theatre of Shopping. This is very convenient for us and also great when we have visitors, especially from abroad. They all enjoy the closeness to the beach, as well as the Gateway shopping mall and all it has to offer. Tell us a bit about your business? When the law firm was established, it was situated in Morningside, Durban. Eight months later we relocated the offices to La Lucia Ridge. At the start

there were only three people — Kristin, a receptionist and me. Three years later, the firm has added four consultants, a conveyancer, a bookkeeper and a candidate attorney. During the time we’ve been open, our client listing has grown immensely and we have clients from as far afield as Australia, the United Kingdom, South America, the Netherlands and, recently, Hong Kong.

What was the idea/concept behind S R Maharaj Attorneys? I wanted to develop a law firm that I have a vested interest in, a business that could allow me to achieve the goals that I had set out to achieve the day I was admitted as an attorney. These goals were to be my

30 |

w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

own boss and play my part in stimulating the economy whilst creating employment opportunities for others. Why Umhlanga? The firm is situated in the midst of the corporate milieu on La Lucia Ridge. Umhlanga is an area that is great both for living and for business. The Ridge has become the pulse of the corporate village in KZN. This is also a very practical location. Home, work, shopping, restaurants, the airport and the beach are all in close proximity. In essence, this means less time wasted on the road! Some people say that the first rule in business is to never work with family, but you two seem to do it very well. What’s your secret?

Ever since we first met, we always knew that we could work well together. We are good at different things and this is very useful in any business. We enjoy each other’s company and we learn from our interactions in practically all spheres of life — from the law firm to raw organic food recipes and skiing — but we still have our own personal space where we can pursue our own interests as individuals. How do you manage to keep work life and home life separate and still keep the romance? We work hard and therefore it is important to take time for ourselves and for each other. We make sure that we do something special every weekend that is unrelated to work. This family bonding time takes the stress out of the week. Individually, we go to the gym regularly.

Business umhlanga

This is a great way to manage stress and gain energy for the working week. We have also succeeded in finding a balance between work life and home life. All our interactions are based on mutual respect, understanding and attraction; this creates an environment where romance thrives quite naturally. In a town where firms keep popping up all the time, what do you think has kept yours going and remaining such a success? Nothing comes without hard work,

coupled with longs hours, to ensure that you are able to deliver swift, sound advice and consistently get the best results. This requires persistence and innovative thinking. From the beginning we were fully committed to this law firm and spent the hours necessary, at the same time making many sacrifices. Looking back, it was actually fun. When approaching life and business, what principles do you live by? We try our best to provide the service to our clients that we would expect.

This means ethical and professional integrity. What vision do you have for S R Maharaj Attorneys for the future? The same vision that I always had — a thriving practice that is financially viable and sustainable, adding value for clients from varied sectors of the economy and creating employment opportunities for others who can assist me in achieving my goals. What makes your business unique? My team and my clients come first. It is a prerequisite that my team is comfortable at work as this impacts on the total service provided for clients. We have a dynamic team at S R Maharaj Attorneys. When accepting engagements, I ensure that I have the necessary skills and competence to assist my clients successfully. What do you like to do together to relax when you have time off? We enjoy going to the beach, the Drakensberg, Cape Town or abroad. We like visiting Norway in the winter to go skiing. Together we also tend our own organic garden at home. We find this relaxing and it is a good way to introduce the children to a healthy lifestyle and teach them about how to grow good food and appreciate where it comes from. And, yes, we like going to Cinema Nouveau!

ost of us in KZN are familiar with the unpretentious but quality store that is Fruit and Veg City’s Food Lovers Market, a store that started many years ago as a shop where you could get quality fresh produce at great prices but which quickly became the leading fresh produce store in South Africa. Recently Food Lovers Market’s flagship store in La Lucia Mall underwent a total revamp. I’ve always believed that, in order to stay on top and in people’s minds, it’s imperative to upgrade and keep people excited, which is exactly what’s been done here – what you put into your business is what you get out!

The store closed its doors on 18 November and reopened on 13 December in time for the flurry of the festive season rush. Visiting the “new” Food Lovers Market in La Lucia it is evident that this business is here to stay and, more importantly, that it is determined to be the best by creating an up-to-date, trendy food emporium that offers shoppers an all-round superior shopping experience. La Lucia Food Lovers Market’s general manager and marketing manager told us that they had realised over time that even though the store was successful,

36 |

w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

it didn’t really reflect the essence and profiles of its Umhlanga and La Lucia clientele, so the franchise decided on an upgrade in order to be able to offer a shopping experience that fits both the quality of the brand and the type of customer by providing a better environment, better quality and a bigger range. They feel that the service and the products, as well as the look and feel, must encapsulate what the brand stands for and is trying to achieve. So, what can you expect from the new, improved Food Lovers Market store? You should actually be asking yourself

Feature umhlanga

what you can’t expect! Apart from the amazing new look that shouts “we’re all about fresh”, there are the new and extended departments within the store. There is a new fresh fish department where many different sea-dwelling creatures can be found tasting as fresh as if they had been caught only an hour ago. An extended butchery will entice even the most discerning of South African braaiers with the unrestricted selection on offer. The bakery has also been extended, with fresh-everything in every size, shape and flavour on offer all day, every day. Embracing the health route, they have added an amazing sushi bar in

the Refresh Cafe which is always a winner. The hot food section has grown and has even more delicious options to choose from. The great joy of the hot food section is that moms and dads who work late and don’t have time to cook healthy, hearty meals can pop into the store and buy cooked meals at great prices — something that makes a visit to the store and even better experience. The layout of the “new” store gives shoppers an overall view of what the store has on offer, allowing you to really appreciate the speciality products that you can’t get anywhere else as well as the unmatched specials that are constantly on offer. Walking into the store takes you back to a time where markets were the go-to place for fresh produce and where food was king!

As it is the flagship store for the brand in KZN, it was decided to revamp La Lucia’s Food Lovers Market to see if the concept would work an if it would be viable to renovate the other stores within KZN. Thanks to the very positive feedback since the store reopened, they will be moving forward with a revamp of all the Food Lovers Market’s in KZN. “The Food Lovers Market group is excited by the positive response which proves that what we’ve done is paying off. It is really rewarding for all of us who were involved and helps us keep on delivering this high standard,” says General Manager, Andrew Anastasiades. The next big question is which store will be revamped into the next food emporium. Well, my sources tell me that the lucky people in Scottburgh will be seeing a few changes in the near future!

Restaurant review umhlanga

Y

ou might think that you’d be bombarded by the hustle and bustle of eager shoppers at a restaurant in a large shopping mall but, in fact, at Mozambik you actually forget that you’re in Gateway. With no noise or congestion, you are completely secluded and can sit back and enjoy spectacular views of the Wave House and surroundings.

that covered my plate. The calamari was well-cooked and equally succulent and the spinach was a nice addition of green to the plate and, although I had thought that it would be creamed spinach, I’m glad now that it wasn’t, as it added a nice contrast to the richness of the meal. All in all a great combo — not too large with four prawns, but not too small either.

Owners Johan Muller and Dagan Gradwell are great, very hands-on and invested in their restaurant, something which shows in the great service you get from their staff.

Going on around the table, an absolute winner was the crayfish thermidor — even though it’s on the pricey side, it is totally worth every cent! This dish is big and is served on top of a bed of mash — you also get a side order. The crayfish was succulent and cooked to perfection, topped with mushrooms and a cheesy thermidor sauce, finger-licking stuff it was!

The Gateway Mozambik has its own unique look and feel, finding a wonderful balance between rustic and modern chic. The décor is bold and bright, with contrasting greens and oranges creating an inviting, warm atmosphere that makes you feel instantly at ease and this, along with the easy-going vibe, makes for a blissfully relaxing day out.

On arrival, in true Mozambik-style, a jug of rum and raspberry was in order and on the order! Sitting at your table sipping on your R&R, you’ll find that the restaurant exudes an air of typically Mozambican flair, just minus the beach. With vibey Portuguese music filling the room, R&R’s flowing as if they’re on tap and the smell of fresh, rich food, plus an ambiance that makes you feel that you’re on holiday, it’s unbeatable. Our waiter, John, was fabulous — helpful, friendly, funny and knowledgeable — everything you could ask for in a waiter. Diners at this marvellous restaurant, with its inimitable rustic decor, greenery and amazing atmosphere, are treated to a roll-call of Mozambican classics, with everything from seafood to chicken (and they also offer great meat dishes for more carnivorous folk)! The favourites that we ordered were the calamari and prawn combo with spinach and rice (my dish). It was superb, with seafood that was impeccably fresh. There was no using a knife or fork when it came to the prawns — the bread, or should I say pao, became my utensil of choice, soaking up the rich garlic peri peri sauce

The next fave meal on the table was the Sacana-style steak topped with prawns and calamari and served with chips. For the sake of full disclosure, this is apparently for people who have a no-pain-threshold for hot sauce, but the combo of seafood and meat along with the creamy, fiery sauce is nothing less than fantastic! Finally it was time for puds. At this point, if I had been wearing jeans, I was so full that I would have had to undo the top button so, in order to preserve some of my waistline, I decided to skip the pudding. Around the table the feeling was mutual, but chocoholics can always make room for a furtive little brownie with some ice cream to wash it down with. From the moans and groans of delight, I could tell that it was well worth the extra button. People don’t come to Mozambik to grab a quick bite while they keep their fingers glued to their phones — they come here for the experience and great food. The atmosphere — plus Johan and Dagen’s constant presence and the staff’s friendly attendance – sets the tone. All in all, my experience, for lack of a better word, was “Totes Awe’s”. Spoil your special someone this month with something romantic that won’t break the bank! The misconception that bigger is better isn’t always true — it’s the small things that often make the biggest impact and, anyway, these days not all of us can afford to be extravagant and often have to resort to what I like to call “cheaposity”.

1: Throw V-day out of the window

3: Gift certificate

The idea that we should be all “love and hearts” on only one day of the year is hogwash; it’s an escape route for lazy people who feel that they don’t have to show the same sort of spontaneity and romance on any other day. I’m not saying that you have to be on top-form every day, but at least once or twice a month a bit of sparkle and luuurve wouldn’t hurt.

A gift of giving! Create a couple of gift certificates that they can cash in when they want, for little things like watching your program, breakfast in bed, his or her fav meal for dinner during the week, a full body massage and the list goes on! This is a fun way for them to get what they want and for you to show you care.

2: Write a poem or a letter

So your plans for adding a bit romance have been ruined. Improvise! Rent an old black and white classic and snuggle up on the couch with a cup of hot chocolate sprinkled with marshmallows and enjoy an intimate moment together. Grab a board game and get your giggle on as your companion tries to cheat his/ her way to success. Talk about life, each other and future plans. Communication is cheap, but it’s priceless!

Chocolates and sweets may be the commercialised “go to” ploy of the month but, hello, we’ve just come out of a season where we gorge ourselves into a stupor — we don’t need any more encouragement to grow a buttocks with its own postal code! A thoughtful letter that reveals your true feelings is something that will make the most discerning woman weak at the knees.

4: Rainy days!

5: Get your Fifty Shades on! (The PG part) I’m not talking about “that” 80 percent of the book — I’m talking about the other 20 percent. E-mail your other half a sweet, sexy, suggestive, surreptitious message that’ll make coming home exciting and something to look forward to. It’s amazing what power the word has on one’s imagination!

basket (nothing’s worse than sand in food, so I would go for Tapas), head down to Umhlanga’s main Beach and enjoy your surroundings in one of the most beautiful towns in KZN. A celebratory “ching” and a sip of bubbly just because you can, plus a loving smooch as the sun goes down, will leave your woman starry-eyed and irrevocably in love!

6: Take a walk on the promenade

8: Create a memory album

All too often we get home, turn on the TV and watch something lessthan-interesting or play on our cell phones! Grab a bottle of wine and some strawberries and head down to the promenade at dusk for a romantic stroll. Find a secluded bench with a great view and let the romance flow.

Travel down memory lane with a photo album that shows a timeline of your relationship from the beginning to now. Sit together with a glass of wine and go through the album reminiscing on good times. Try remembering small details about the day the photo was taken, your lady will appreciate that you paid so much attention and will have her eyes seeing flying hearts!

7: A picnic on the beach Pack a delectable but simple picnic

9: A pretend blind date Meet your partner at a bar and try to pick each other up as if it’s the first time you’ve ever met. Re-invent yourself and get creative. If you can get past the hilariousness of it all, it can really add some zest to a relationship. Umhlanga has some great intimate bars that offer the perfect setting for a pretend blind date! Oyster Box, News Cafe, Coco’s action bar at the Umhlanga Sands Hotel. 10: Tap into your inner child! Sometimes it’s just nice to let your hair down, put your inhibitions to one side and act like a kid again. A few laughs with and at each other can bring a relationship that much closer – head down to Gateway and take advantage of all the fun games at Funtubbles, Electric Avenue, Rock climbing wall and the Wave House. w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

imberlee from Sorbet invited me to come and check out her salon and, whether you talk to her over the phone, by e-mail or in person, the one thing that always comes across is her passion for her business, the Sorbet brand and her clients, so I was really excited to visit this salon in the Granada Centre.

studied sports massage, so she was indepth in her treatment in the areas that needed it. I was very impressed with her knowledge of the body and we chatted easily about her passion, which is to have people leave her treatment room feeling relaxed and pain-free (if that is what is needed).

I just loved this friendly, classy — though fun — salon with its cleverly laid out areas. Pedi’s can be done in threes, so it is the perfect place for a friends’ catch-up session, a mother-and-daughter treat and even, I hear, the more-than-occasional kitchen tea or pamper party.

Sarah then did a facial for me. After studying my card and comprehensively identifying my skin’s needs, she decided to go with the Ultra Calming Skin Treatment from Dermalogica and she also used a colloidal oatmeal masque to hydrate and calm my skin — what a lovely product. The whole facial was simply heavenly!

First I went for a massage with Shannon. I must admit that I had always thought that Sorbet was just for Mani’s and Pedi’s (which, of course, they are famous for...) but they offer way more than that! Shannon has experience in and has

The Sorbet staff understands Kimberlee’s vision for not only the Sorbet brand, but also of how she expects her clients to be treated. Sorbet Granada is passionate about what they do ... “We love our clients ...” says Kimberlee. Her focus in the salon

is on using excellent products, first-rate equipment and then regular training. Dermalogica is the brand that they focus on as they feel that is has special products to suit every skin type and the range is used throughout the salon! (They do stock Environ, too, as they often have requests for it). They buy into the brand wholeheartedly and love the Dermalogica slogan … “We are not in the skincare business; We are in the business of skin care”. “Sorbet is a great franchise to be a part of,” says Kimberlee. For me this was a funtastic experience! I highly recommended it (and take a walk to the back rooms — those massages and facials are amazing!). Shop 6 Granada Square, Chartwell Drive, Umhlanga Rocks. umhlanga Car Review

The MINI just grows and grows words Richard Webb

To understand the context of the Mini Countryman, one has to delve back into the murky past of Britain’s crumbling automotive prospects in the late 1960’s. Lord Stokes, the new chairman of the then named British Motor Corporation (BMC) was desperate to leverage the success of Alec Issigonis’ complete brilliance that was the Morris and Austin Mini. Over fish and chips, brown ale and cigarettes, BMC management worked out that they needed a more profitable brand extension to the fabulous and wholly worthy Mini. So they wheeled Alec Issigonis to create homage to the Mini. He created a monster called the Maxi. This beast was launched in 1969, in an expensive blaze of futile publicity. It boasted front wheel drive and a five speed ‘box. It was a truly horrid thing, but on the positive side, it was known as the 100 mph bed, because it topped out at a wheezy 160 km/h and the front seats folded flat to create a bed like experience. Hopefully not at the same time though. Fast-forward 40 years and BMW have leveraged the success of the their highly profitable MINI. The MINI Countryman is meant to leverage the success of Alec Issigonis’ completely brilliant Morris and Austin Mini. Sound familiar? The Countryman ALL4 Cooper S feels immediately bigger than the ‘regular’ MINI. The engine is very willing and if you have never experienced the normal Cooper S, you’d never know that the weight of the four-wheel-drive technology has blunted the cars’ performance. The car does feel smooth and very urgent when it is called upon to perform. Do you need four-wheel drive with this chassis and engine combo? Nope. Not unless you live in the Ceres mountains in the winter. The handling is superb, gripping tenaciously and allows for hooligan behaviour to be rewarded with

indecently quick progress along twisty roads.

The third generation of BMW’s MINI, which will arrive in 2014, will also serve as the

Inside, the car is not that convincing for my tastes. The switchgear is over the top; the speedo is bigger than a dustbin lid, the evocative rocker switches are located low on the centre console and difficult to locate without taking your eyes off the road. The car will happily fit at least four adults in the car and drive reasonable distances in manageable comfort. But tell your mates to leave most of their luggage at home. This car is 4 097 mm long, pretty much on a par with your typical supermini and its boot is just 350-litres. Inside, though, the MINI’s obsession with circles made me feel like I was trapped inside a giant Aero chocolate bar. Too many bubbles for my liking. So has Mini created a monster worthy of its Austin Maxi grand dad? No, the Countryman’s not a bad car. This time MINI have managed to keep much of the original Mini zest in place. The steering is direct and responsive, making the Countryman a keen performer, and while the ride is sometimes unsettled on South African roads, it does settle down nicely at higher speeds, particularly in sixth gear. It’s costly but oh so trendy and the pretty yummie mummies will absolutely love it.

base for the next generation Countryman. It is one of BMW’s treasured sources of profit as it offers almost limitless potential for expansion. Power will come from a range of BMW’s three cylinder petrol and diesel engines. Expect the dustbin lid sized speedo in the centre of the car to be consigned to; you guessed it, the dustbin.

Tell us a little bit about yourself? I live in Sunningdale village and used to drum for a professional band called Famous Curtain Trick. I then went to live in London where my passion for drumming changed to a passion for photography. I just love capturing images of people, which probably explains why the bulk of my work is weddings and portraiture. What or who got you started in photography and did you study? No, I’m self-taught. Believe it or not, I was a salesman for years but never felt that I had found my true calling. When I got back from the UK, all my friends were all getting married and I took my camera along and started building a portfolio. The final plunge came when I was asked by a colleague to photograph his wedding and a photograph of the couple won The Mercury’s bridal competition for that month — the rest, as they say, is history. What gives you ideas or inspires you to create such amazing imagery? That’s the million-dollar question! I guess I’m inspired by movies, which I love. I also get very excited by different lights and working with people, whose energy I feed off. How would you describe your style? I am known for my romantic and fun shots, as well for incorporating my couples into beautiful landscapes. I like to think of my work as creative, elegant and timeless. What type of cameras do you shoot with? I shoot with a Canon 5d mk11 and a Canon 50d. How important is Photoshop in your final images? It’s become an extremely important tool, but one that I always believe should be used lightly to enhance a beautiful image, rather than overkill an image, but it certainly has its place in this age of digital photography. What is the best/favourite photo you’ve taken? Wow, that’s a tough question as I have so many favourites! The first one is of a couple laughing — this photo has booked me many weddings as it shows what wedding photography should reflect… Fun! The second was shot at the beach at the Salt Rock Hotel. The light was phenomenal and the picture encompasses everything I love about photography — interesting light and something magical that sometimes happens when shooting and is something that you can’t prepare for. Describe the ideal conditions that help get a great photo (natural light, mornings vs afternoons, times of year or anything like that). I believe the ideal conditions are a couple with great personality and lots of romance and spark, as well as a great synergy with their chosen photographer so that they relax in front of the camera and, of course, early morning or late afternoon light is always a winner for a great shot.

Make Glowing Water Make glowing water with the help of a black light and a highlighter in this fun science experiment for kids. What you'll need: 1. A black light (you can find them at places like hardware stores, as well as online stores like Amazon). 2. A highlighter pen. 3. A dark room to do the experiment. Instructions: 1. If you are using a highlighter pen carefully break it open, remove the felt and soak it in a small amount of water for a few minutes. 2. Find a dark room. 3. Turn on the black light near your water, how does it look? What's happening? The ultra violet (UV) light coming from your black light lamp excites things called phosphors. The dye from highlighter pens contain phosphors that turn UV light (light we can’t see) into visible light (light we can see). That’s why your water glows in the dark when you shine a black light on it. w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

The Funny Side of Couples

Words Pippa rowney

I

t’s the season of love and during this time we often seem to start noticing more couples around. As Valentine’s Day cards, red roses and cute teddy bears festoon shop windows let us, rather than fall into a manic romancehater rage, take a moment to look at the funny side of couples. Couples are great! No two are the same and that is cool. There is always something to have a good laugh about when you link two unique individuals together… differences are bound to become apparent. I have had great enjoyment in looking at the funny side of couples and have unknowingly found myself categorising couples into specific groups — the “Touchy Feelies”, the “Perfect Match” and the “Mismatched”. So, without further ado, let’s look into each of these three categories and especially the funny side of couples. Maybe you’ll even find yourself fitting in to one of them. This can be a bit of a touchy subject, excuse the pun. But, seriously, some people are infuriated by the Touchy

58 |

w w w. fa b m a g s . c o . z a

Feelies that kiss in the movies, never stop touching each other, hold hands while eating (who can do that) or — my personal favourite — walk around with their hands an inappropriate depth into each other’s pants. What are your thoughts about this group of couples? Have you ever had a bad experience, such as being trapped in the window seat while young lovers spend the entire two-hour flight from Durban to Cape Town lip-locked? But it gets better! There is most certainly a funny side to couples who are Mismatched. Ever had an awkward moment standing in a queue with a couple fighting behind you? It’s in situations like these that you know you shouldn’t laugh, but you really want to. Mismatched couples amuse me daily, especially when the signs are visible. Uber-jock meets nerdy girl, really tall guy meets petite girl and, of course, surfer girl meets accountant — the most unlikely matches, yet they make it work, bless it! Some people love them and many people love to hate them — those couples that are just the Perfect Match.

They finish each other’s sentences and they know what they mean without having to speak. Come on now! But we see them everywhere — up at 5 a.m. running on the promenade together, or hiking through the Drakensberg wearing only the best hiking brands and what about those couples who you might even mistake for brother and sister! Uh-oh! Awkward! These are just a few of my observations on the funny side of couples. I am sure you probably have your own categories to fit couples into and these, I am sure, afford you a great deal of amusement too. There is a funny side to every couple, but the truth is that every couple is a perfect match. When you find someone who makes you smile, who treats you well and who you care for, well, that in itself is a perfect match!
