editors note There is something special about the places and people that we spend time with. It has to be something to do with the time because, as our most precious personal commodity, we give it freely, either directly or indirectly, to those who occupy the spaces around us and we only like to share our precious commodities with those that we care about. This is what makes the schools we go to, the places that we visit and the towns that we fall in love with so special to us. Every day we plant a piece of ourselves here, in uMhlathuze, in our community. So what better way for you to celebrate those moments, days and experiences than in your very own glossy, stylish community magazine that sings the praises of Zululand’s people and places by sharing their great stories and memorable pictures? This is why we have launched your very own glossy magazine, The Bay. We love the community and we love celebrating everyday life there. At FabMags we’ve been publishing community magazines for a while now (check out our website www.fabmags.co.za) and we have a deep appreciation of what people want to see and read about when it comes to where they live. We know that it’s stories about local people doing great things, special

We truly live in an amazing part of KZN, one that is characterised by unspoilt beauty stretching from our pristine coastline to abundant forests and rolling green hills! Richards Bay boasts one of the only beaches here with shark nets and blue flag status — something that is hard to come by these days. It also offers a number of beaches that cater for the varying needs of different beach users and activities. We take a look at what some of the beaches in The Bay have to offer.

KIM STEINBERG There’s something about a good photograph that captures the imagination and enchants the eye, whether it’s because it’s a memory that will be forever frozen in time, or the fact that you can capture the most precious moments in someone’s life! I have always envied the way in which photographers view life — how they can find something aesthetically pleasing in even the most insignificant or (to the rest of us) less-than-attractive thing. We are so blessed in our small town to have some truly amazing photographers right here, all unique and different in their own way, but with one common underlying factor — they are all brilliant! With this in mind, we have decided that during the next couple of months we will profile some of Zululand’s best photographers, people who we think that you should look out for when thinking of capturing that next special moment!

In our first edition, we are profiling Kim Steinberg, a photographer who is known for her absolute passion when it comes to her craft. With a natural flair for creativity and a background in design, she has become a photographer to be reckoned with. As well as being a kick-ass photographer, Kim also heads up the art direction for a local travel magazine and is also one of Getaway magazine’s online bloggers, which takes her photography to all sorts of weird and wonderful places. Specializing in weddings, hotel and family shoots, Kim Steinberg is this month’s local photographer to look out for!

Angelique Wright In each edition we will be profiling a well-known person from the area and finding out what they love to do most in the place that they call home. In our first edition, we are profiling Angelique Wright, owner and founder of Trelique Models, a registered modelling and promotions agency which has been running successfully for the past 14 years. Angelique is well known in the area and has been involved in the modelling industry since 1990, beginning when she was only five years old. When she’s not grooming the next top model, Angelique is the Marketing and PRO Manager of Boardwalk Inkwazi and, when she’s not working, she loves spending time with her family. This is Angelique’s town and this is what she likes to do in it.

Watch the sunset I love to relax watching the sun set at the Tuzi Gazi Waterfront in Richards Bay over a good meal overlooking the sea and all the yachts.

Relax when the weather’s good Being Zululand, the weather is great all year round. If it is a nice sunny day, I enjoy going with my family to Dayspring, an animal farm just outside Empangeni, or to Naval Island Beach. If the weather is cold, I love to rent movies, snuggle under a blanket and enjoy popcorn with my family.

Work out I really enjoy doing community fun walks and eating healthy.

Romantic date My idea of romantic dates is exploring all that Zululand has to offer. I enjoy creating memories around moments like that. Wonderful places in our area include the cheese farm just outside St Lucia and game parks like the Umfolozi Game Park. On our doorstep, we love picnics at Naval Island Beach and eating out at different restaurants at the Boardwalk and The Waterfront in Richards Bay.

Zini River Estate Buffalo Big Five Mountain Bike Classic the party The Big five mountain bike series is up and running with the first race of the series having taken place in Mtunzini on Sunday 4 May! Possibly one of the toughest routes but by far the most scenic of the series. The event was definitely a huge success with just under 1000 riders attending. The Mtunzini Country Club hosted the event which gave room to many spectators and supporters.

the highlight All in all it was a fantastic day for the whole family to be outdoors, The Mtunzini Pre Primary had a kiddies area that allowed you to leave your little ones in a supervised area and take advantage of the food tent where tasty hamburgers, boerie and bacon and egg rolls were on offer. A great start to a great series!

the party Richards bay was abuzz the first weekend of May as locals attended the annual Dolosfees Music, sport and cultural festival. Great food and retail stores filled the festival and a jam packed program with tons on offer from music and dance performances to competitions entertained the whole family.

A dad is someone who wants to keep you from making mistakes but, despite this, lets you find your own way, even though his heart breaks in silence when you get hurt. We take a look at where the day on which we celebrate the best men in our lives began and gather some interesting facts around the word ‘Father’!

Where it all began It may come as a surprise to many to learn that it was actually a girl who came up with the idea of a day to celebrate our fathers. After listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909, Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Washington wanted a special day to honour her father, a widowed Civil War veteran who had been left to raise his six children on a farm and who had done so very well. The first Father’s Day celebration, on June 17, 1910, was proclaimed that month by the mayor of Spokane because it was the month of Smart’s birth. Later, in 1966, the first presidential proclamation in the USA honouring fathers was issued when President Lyndon Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Father’s Day has been celebrated annually since 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed the law that made it permanent and we have been celebrating it ever since.

Dad Stories A.A. Milne created Winnie the Pooh for his son, Christopher Robin. Pooh was based on Robin’s teddy bear, Edward, a gift that Christopher had received for his first birthday, and a bear at the London Zoo named Winnie, who was Christopher’s favourite on their father/ son visits to the zoo. Pooh comes from the name of Christopher’s pet swan.

Father’s Day Facts It is believed that the word ‘Dad’ dates back to as early as the sixteenth century.

The rose is the official flower for Father’s Day. Wearing a red rose signifies a living father, while a white one represents a deceased father.

According to market research, most dads would prefer to spend quality time with their families on Father’s Day than to receive a gift or a card. Hallmark recognizes Father’s Day as the fourth most popular holiday for sending out cards and 110 million cards are sent for Father’s Day each year. Fifty percent of these cards are given to dads by sons and daughters, 20 percent are given by wives and 30 percent are given by relatives and friends to anyone who is a father.

Hallmark produces over 800 card designs for Father’s Day. Father’s Day is celebrated in most places on the third Sunday in June, but not everywhere. In Spain and Portugal, for instance, fathers are honoured on St. Joseph’s Day, on March 19. In Australia, it’s the first Sunday in September. Finnish people celebrate the festival on the second Sunday in November and in Thailand, 5 December is observed as Father’s Day every year.

Today some of the most popular Internet searches connected to the day include father’s day recipes — it seems that food really is the way to a man’s heart.

Items high on the list for Father’s Day gifts include items that you might find in dad’s toolbox, such as hammers, wrenches and screwdrivers.

Having grown up in Mtunzini, I spent a lot of my childhood with Shane and his family and through the years have witnessed his business going from strength to strength. So, when we decided to start our third community magazine, The Bay, it was a no-brainer that our first business interview would be with Shane Webster, philanthropist, family man, businessman, fitness fundi and really nice guy. His journey from rebellious twenty-something to business mogul, plus raising a family, is admirable — one that makes you realise what a lot of hard work and a bit of talent can get you and, of course, an active lifestyle doesn’t seem to hurt. Well-known in the Zululand area, we chat to Shane about his business philosophy, the road to success and how it is that he looks so young after raising three gorgeous kids and contending with what seems like a zoo of animals and a wife that is as young at heart as she looks!

How long have you lived in Zululand and what made you move here? I had worked in sales management for Nashua Durban for 10 years when the opportunity to purchase my own Nashua franchise came up. I jumped at the chance and moved here from Durban. In September we will have been here for 19 years. What made you decide to work in The Bay and live in Zini? On the trip up to Richards Bay to look at the business, I dropped my wife in Zini and, whilst I looked at the business, she looked around Zini and fell in love with it. By the time I came back she was convinced that this was the place to live and, despite the daily drive to Richards Bay, she’s been absolutely right. It’s been the perfect place to bring up our kids and live a lifestyle we would never have believed possible. How did you get to where you are today? Tell us about the journey. After what is now called a gap year, hitchhiking around Europe, the most immediate employment I could find on my return was in sales. I thought that this would be just a stopgap until I found my ‘real’ career, but found that initiating and completing a sale, with the earning potential entirely dependent on my input, was exciting and rewarding. After a few sales jobs, I started in direct sales at Nashua and began moving up through the ranks of the sales divisions until an opportunity to open a new Nashua branch in Pinetown came up. With that success, I opened a further branch and then became the regional manager. The Zululand office at that time was a branch of Nashua Durban and a decision was made to sell this as a separate franchise. I applied successfully and, after 10 years in Durban, moved to Zululand.

With every journey, especially in business, there are always challenges to be faced. What have been some of yours? Taking the business from an initial 16 staff to 70 staff with the pool of staffing resources in a small area such as Richards Bay has necessitated the development of staff rather than the recruitment of experienced personnel. The frustration comes about when people that you’ve mentored over the years are headhunted, so it’s an ongoing process, but I guess it says a lot about our abilities to develop people. The biggest challenge in Richards Bay, with its enormous potential, is watching large corporates and parastatals supporting businesses outside our area whilst many local businesses are ignored,

even though they have the capacity to service and supply. Those same corporates will throw cash at community projects to generate employment, or subsidise schools in the area. I’ve never understood the logic. When you support local business and generate local employment, we all benefit, the area grows and the corporates have a larger pool of employment resources. It’s a win-win for all. As a corporate business, do you give back to the community in any way (charities, etc)? Apart from the multitude of golf days, there are Zululand Squash, the Richards Bay Athletic Club, the Zululand Ski Boat Club and machines for needy schools — the list is endless. The largest projects are through mountain-bike races, the

main one being the iSimangaliso FourDay event through the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Through this initiative R105,000 was donated to the Wildlife Endangered Species Fund last year and this year our target is R400,000. The project also employs 20 people from local communities. In addition, we’re very involved in the Big Five Series of MTB races as the main organiser and each of these races are fundraisers for five different communities. What is it about Nashua that keeps you at the helm? The constant change in technology allows for some really creative ways of keeping our clients and our own business productive. It’s a fast pace and, to keep ahead of the game, you have to focus on

new innovations all the time. It keeps me very active and busy and I find that I enjoy the pressure — there’s always something that needs attention. What do you do to keep abreast when it comes to quality of knowledge, service and some to ensure that Nashua Zululand remains a top contender in the Nashua brand ? The culture of the company is very customer-focused and we work as a team to ensure that service levels are kept high through ongoing training and commitment by all staff to providing the best possible service. That we have won the Southern African Franchise of the Year award twice in the past three years bears this out. Who is Shane Webster when he’s not in a suit and tie behind a desk with his business face on? I guess you’d call me a ‘weekend warrior’, doing some type of adrenaline-junky sport like cycling, surfskiing, waterskiing, or jetskiing and then there’s also a lot of spare time tied up in sports events management. I know that you are rather into health and fitness. Why is this important to you — is it a family philosophy?

It’s not something that we’ve ever set out to do; it’s just a way of life when you’re into the outdoors as much as we are. When I’m not 100 percent fit and feeling healthy, I just don’t have the same energy levels, so it’s a daily part of my life. Tell us about your family life? We have three children — 18, 20 and 22. We didn’t plan this and I still don’t know how we managed it. We have a great relationship — very open — and we’re able to discuss almost anything as a family, plus we also play together a lot. We grew together as family doing something in the outdoors every weekend. My wife’s family are in France, Australia and England, so we travel a fair bit to see the in-laws and we combine this with family holidays. With two kids away at college and one in boarding school, what is it like to have the house to yourselves — just you and your wife again? Whilst the kids are important, it’s brilliant to have the house to ourselves. Daryl and I met when she was on holiday in S.A and we married within three months of that first meeting — love at first sight, etc, etc. We had Nadia, our first daughter, almost straight away, so we’ve never had time to ourselves and now, 23 years later, we

finally have some time alone which we’ve never had before. It’s the start of a whole new relationship. What where you like in school? Nerdy boy with glasses or cheerleader- driven jock? School discipline triggered the rebellious side and I tried my absolute best to be the biggest party animal possible. In hindsight not the best idea, but I pulled through in the end. If you could think of one trait that you have had since you were a kid, what would it be? Has to be the entrepreneurial side. Even at junior school, I was trading something and always on the look-out for some scheme or other. There’s always an opportunity out there just waiting to be discovered and the trick is not just spotting it; it’s taking advantage of it and doing it. Are you a first class, business or economy class man? I wish! Cattle class, I’m afraid. I’m often tempted to upgrade, but I just can’t get my head around the economy scale of a few hours of luxury for 10 times the cost in comparison to the hundreds of better ways of spending the money, like a new bike or travel somewhere.

Alkanstrand As most of you will know, this is the number one swimming and surfing beach and it has shark nets and lifeguards, as well a bunch of different amenities — food outlets, braai facilities and a pretty tidy skate park. Thanks to its exposed beach break, this is probably the best place to catch a good wave.

Newark Beach This is a cosy little beach situated between two piers, which apparently makes for good body-boarding. It’s also a nice calm swimming beach and is protected by lifeguards and shark nets. Because of its close proximity to Alkanstrand, the two beaches share pretty much the same amenities, including a putt-putt course, tuck shop and more. Both beaches offer safe parking as well as wide grassy tabled areas for picnics.

Pelican Island

Because of its situation in the harbour, the manmade Pelican Island offers flat water and smooth conditions. A southerly wind here is clean and perfect for learning to kite board. It’s a great beach to get away from the crowds and affords avid bird watchers a chance to view some of our amazing Zululand bird species, among them, of course, the pelican. This is also an animal-friendly beach. It is a private beach with restricted access, so it is always kept clean and tidy. There are a few basic rules to abide by, which is why this beach remains a firm favourite for families.

KIM Steinberg There’s something about a good photograph that captures the imagination and enchants the eye, whether it’s because it’s a memory that will be forever frozen in time, or the fact that you can capture the most precious moments in someone’s life! I have always envied the way in which photographers view life — how they can find something aesthetically pleasing in even the most insignificant or (to the rest of us) less-than-attractive thing. We are so blessed in our small town to have some truly amazing photographers right here, all unique and different in their own way, but with one common underlying factor — they are all brilliant! With this in mind, we have decided that during the next couple of months we will profile some of Zululand’s best photographers, people who we think that you should look out for when thinking of capturing that next special moment! In our first edition, we are profiling Kim Steinberg, a photographer who is known for her absolute passion when it comes to her craft. With a natural flair for creativity and a background in design, she has become a photographer to be reckoned with. As well as being a kick-ass photographer, Kim also heads up the art direction for a local travel magazine and is also one of Getaway magazine’s online bloggers, which takes her photography to all sorts of weird and wonderful places. Specializing in weddings, hotel and family shoots, Kim Steinberg is this month’s local photographer to look out for!

Tell us a little bit about yourself? I grew up in Johannesburg and studied fine arts at college and moved down to northern KZN about six years ago. I have always been interested in photography and travel and my love for people really helps too. I think that people feel comfortable around me, which, at the end of the day, really makes for great photos. How long have you been a photographer? I started photography in 2010 in a totally unplanned way and have carried on with my dream ever since. What or who got you started in photography and did you study? I took photos during a holiday in Namibia in 2010 that came out so well that my partner, Wayne, and all our friends started nagging me to start making photography my career. I taught myself everything that I know and continue to try and learn new things on a daily basis. What gives you ideas or inspires you to create your imagery? People, songs, nature... all these things have something deep and inspiring about them and I often come up with random images in my mind that I like to try and convert into real pictures. I am also very inspired by other photographers who have the same sort of style as me. How would you describe your style? Free-flowing and natural. I don’t like to plan my shots too much. I like capturing real ‘moments’ as they happen. After all, photography is the only means that we have of truly capturing a single moment of our lives, so to capture it as it really happened is important to me. What type of cameras do you shoot with? I shoot with a Canon 7D with a Canon 60D as my backup.

Why did you choose to specialise in your particular photographic genre? I don’t think it’s as much a specific choice as trying anything and everything that comes my way. I love the diversity of shooting as many different things as possible. It keeps my job interesting and helps me to constantly find new goals to attain. How important is Photoshop in your final images? I believe more in Lightroom to really ‘joosh’ up my colours and sharpen up my images but, to be honest, I never really change much with Photoshop unless it’s an unsightly telephone pole or an unwanted object in the background. Who is your idol in the industry and how has she or he helped to shape your photographic style? I am really inspired by Jacki Bruniquel and the endless and fascinating ideas that she comes up with. She really is one of the most creative photographers that I’ve ever come across. Fave place to shoot at in Zululand? Hmm… I would have to say any of our beaches, especially the ‘wilder’ and more untouched ones up in the north. Isimangaliso Wetland Park is one of my favourites. Destination you’ve always wanted to shoot at? My dream is to start shooting lodges on exotic islands and beautiful faraway places. Aqua seas, white beaches, blue skies, untamed wilderness... I could get used to that as my job! Describe the ideal conditions that help get a great photo? I’m a big fan of the warm afternoon light (as, I’m sure, most photographers are). Nothing makes a photo quite as beautiful as the sunset glowing through a person’s hair. It’s like nature’s own photoshopping!

Relaxation at its best

A

pamper day is never without appeal, but my pamper day at Sereneté Wellness Centre & Laser Clinic surpassed all my expectations! Located at the Caredoc Centre in Richards Bay, this charming little spa offers a wide range of treatments in a sophisticated and comfortable setting. Owner Venessa Fourie is an inspiring woman if there ever was one, not only does she own and run the salon, but she is also co-owner of The Bay Clinic Pharmacy and runs a forestry business, all this while juggling two kids — and doing it all flawlessly, may I add! On my arrival, my therapist, Adri, showed me to my treatment room and explained what treatments I would be receiving. We started off with a Mama Mio Shrink to Fit treatment focusing on the stomach area. This awesome treatment should be every woman’s best friend in helping to reduce circumferance, tighten and tone skin whilst improving the blood circulation, and removing toxins. Adri started with a 10-minute exfoliating triple-buff massage of the back and stomach, which aids in blood circulation, that is then rubbed off with a warm muslin cloth. She then applied a light layer of Get Waisted — love these names — over the entire stomach area, using a special skin-rolling technique to combat those pesky areas that no sit-up can get rid of. Once the Get Waisted was

wiped off, she applied an Alginate Mask, which was plastered over the stomach and covered with cling-film for ten minutes. While the mask was setting, I was treated to a foot massage that put me into a state of total relaxation. After the foot massage, she removed the mask and, much to my surprise, my skin already felt noticeably smoother and tighter. The final stage was a quick massage with some omega massage oils. All of this brings you one step closer to becoming a smaller, less flabby you! Like most things, a few sessions are required for best results. Aside from a tighter tummy, they also have a butt and legs treatment called the Shrink to Fit package which will lift tighten and tone your hips and thighs, reducing those hard-to-get-rid-of saddlebags and create an overall prettier, fitter buttocks. This is paired with the Vela Shape Slimming Body Contouring and Cellulite Treatment, in which a machine is used that combines elos (infrared) with vacuum and tissue manipulation to reduce the volume and appearance of fatty tissue and to increase your metabolism. Six sessions are recommended for perfect results. After a short break, I was on to my next treatment with Thirusha, who specializes in everything skin and loves everything Dermalogica. What I liked about this facial was that she didn’t just start putting a whole lot of different products on my face.

We first had a quick consultation and she then went on to do Facemapping, which breaks your face up into sections and does a targeted analysis on the different zones and possible problem areas before deciding which products would be most effective for your all-over skin health. My Facemapping revealed that, because of my sinus problems and allergies, I have genetically sensitive skin that is prone to problems if I use products that are too harsh for my skin. Taking all this into consideration, Thirusha decided on an Ultracalming Facial, starting with a double-cleanse, exfoliation, hydrating and colloidal oatmeal mask to calm skin and ease inflammation, followed by a toner and moisturizer that left my skin feeling hydrated, smoother and a whole lot more radiant. She also did a facial massage using aromatherapy oils to assist with drainage as on that day I was suffering from a bad bout of sinusitis. This immediately helped relieve my congestion and assist in a quicker recovery. Sereneté offers all the usual aspects of a beauty spa, from massages to facials, permanent makeup, laser hair removal, tanning and nails and really is a one-stop shop for all your beauty and health needs. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and left feeling totally relaxed and spoilt — this is a definite must for anyone looking for a special day spa treatment!

T

here are very few restaurants these days that immediately make you feel completely at home, from the setting to the atmosphere and the energetic smiles from the staff! After visiting Nam Jai House in Empangeni, however, I can safely say that I have now found this restaurant and, from the time we walked in till we left, it was an experience to write home about. Owner Annemarie Benecke, a lively and passionate woman, has created something really unique with her Thai-cum-Japanese restaurant, which started out as a home business where she made and sold sushi. She quickly found, however, that her popularity had overtaken her capacity. With an inborn talent for cooking pretty much anything, she decided to open a sushi restaurant with a Japanese/Thai influence, something in which the Zululand area is sorely lacking. Fast forward to five years later and her business is one of the most talkedabout restaurants around! On our arrival we were shown to our table (we opted for the Tepenyaki Table) and placed our first cocktail order, their cocktails are

great and 100 percent made in-house. My advice is to order the Mop Jar, Tropical Thunder or Gummy Berry Juice, these, in my book, are all top contenders. Whilst we were enjoying our drinks and some restaurant banter, Annemarie bought out an assortment of their best starter dishes. We felt like kids in a candy store when we saw what was on offer – first up was the Free Range Duck Liver Crème Brûlée, which is possibly the best duck liver paté that I have ever tasted. The crunchy texture and sweetness of the top layer gives it a really great balance between salty and sweet and creates a truly unique flavour. Then came the Tempura Prawns, served in a shot glass with sweet chilli sauce. These were amazing and, unlike a lot of tempura prawns that I’ve had, the batter is light and not too oily and doesn’t mask the full flavour of the prawns. At this point, just as we thought that it couldn’t get any better, she bought out Tuna Rissoles with a homemade tom yum aioli which took an already amazing taste to a whole new level of awesomeness. A real must for a lifechanging flavour is the Crumbed Calamari Tubes Stuffed with Cream Cheese — you

haven’t lived if you haven’t tried one of these Nam Jai originals! Our final choice of starter was one of their simple, but still stellar offerings — Paper Prawns with Sweet Chilli Sauce, which is a light and crispy starter that is perfect for taking the edge off your hunger. Because the restaurant is so well known for its sushi, we had to make room for a few of their amazing concoctions and oldtime favourites. There is nothing normal or average about their sushi menu and Annemarie has created some unique dishes that have flair and flavour and even caters for vegetarians by combining ingredients that you would never imagine would go together but just work! “We strive to be different”. If it is not different and funky, we don’t want to make it. One of our original dishes, the Bamboo Tempura Prawns, was created because I can’t eat seaweed,’ says Annemarie. Some of the sushi dishes that we can recommend are any of the old favourites, such as Rainbow Rolls, Fashion Sandwiches, California Rolls, etc and one of the more adventurous dishes that stood out was the

Volcano Prawns, which is definitely not for the faint-hearted, but, if you like wasabi, this is a good one for you! The Salmon Cucumber Rocket and Cream Cheese Roll with Balsamic Vinegar is a divine option if you’re looking for something really different. By this time our taste-buds were completely satisfied, but we had to persevere and take advantage of the Teppanyaki Table, which is a truly unique experience for our neck of the woods. Our order was a portion of Egg Fried Rice (a must) and Stir-fried Garlic Noodles. This was accompanied by stir-fried veg and the meat that we had ordered — calamari, chicken and beef, which are all then cooked and served in front of you. My hands-down favourite was the Chicken Egg Fried Rice and Veg combo. The flavours were amazing and the chicken was fantastically cooked. Lastly, before we fell into a food comma, we were advised to try three of the best desserts — a gigantic piece of Homemade Lemon Meringue, a portion of Chocolate Spring Rolls — a clear favourite at the table with its mixture of three different types of

melt-in-your-mouth chocolate — and lastly the Fried Ice Cream, which was new to most the table and a real treat! I can’t possibly even begin to tell you how amazing the food and the service actually is, so I suggest that you go and visit Nam Jai for yourself and experience a restaurant that truly breaks the mould of greatness.

Holidays or breakaways are what most people need in our present-day fast-paced life and we have found the perfect place for an idyllic weekend away, in an idyllic location, on an idyllic houseboat. The houseboat caters perfectly for both angling enthusiasts or families needing a breakaway. Something different, definitely.

A

short three-hour drive to Lake Jozini in northern KwaZuluNatal gives you the opportunity to have a really different weekend or week away. You become aware that the Shayamanzi Houseboats (Shayamanzi means ‘hit the water’) are stunners from the moment that you see them from way up high at the Jozini Tiger Lodge Hotel. Excitement in our party started to build immediately and, just before 3pm, we walked down to the jetty and hopped aboard for our weekend cruise. The two Shayamanzi houseboats are fully-serviced and offer all meals, plus a fully-stocked bar. The boat is a very comfortable holiday home where up to 22 people can be accommodated in a truly casual setting — no dressing up for anything (unless you want to!). The cabins on the lower deck are small but perfect — gorgeous, clean, comfortable and kitted out with everything that you could possibly need, including a hairdryer. Although there no kettles in the cabins, guests can pop up to the coffee station, which operates 24/7, whenever they wish. Because you arrive in the afternoon and the cruise begins at 3pm sharp (we cruised in February), the Jacuzzi was our fave place to hang out and cool down. Sundowners in the tub, overlooking the dam, were the perfect way to start the cruise and end the day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner, with real home-cooked food,

were a real treat! And the fact that the cruise is all-inclusive gives mom (and these days most dads too) a truly restful holiday. Because the cruise is on the dam there are no sea sickness concerns, but you still get the benefit of calmness that only water can give. There is actually a lot to do while on Shayamanzi. Tiger fishing is obviously a huge draw card for angling fanatics and, with two opportunities to fish per day, you will definitely get your fix. Instead, however, we decided to ask for a game ‘drive’ aboard one of the new tender boats as we are not the fishing type, and it was just perfect. In the quiet times there are sufficient break-away spots

to allow you to read a book in peace and quiet, or you can sit in the general lounge/bar area ,which is equipped with DStv so that you can even watch sport, or just laze in or by the Jacuzzi with a drink in hand. For longer stays, activities on land can be enjoyed too and these include game drives, elephant monitoring and rhino walks, which are arranged with lodges in the area. This year, the possibility of encountering lions in uMkhuze (as well as Phinda) may add a little power to the pedals however we can assure riders that designated supporting riders and marshals with game experience will scout immediately before and during the ride – riders are routed away from known herds or prides, and marshals are in contact with race organisers to communicate any potentially dangerous spots.”

The Big 5 route encompasses some 270 km of some of the most stunning and pristine parts of seven of South Africa’s first world heritage site’s eco-systems, allowing riders to experience the 332,000 hectare park and adjoining conservation areas such as Phinda , Hluhluwe River Lodge and Bonamanzi Game Reserve. Participants will discover a unique and unbeatable experience in big game country, including encounters with potentially dangerous wildlife such as elephant, rhino, lion or hippo in some of the country’s wildest landscapes, pristine scenery, and breathtaking natural beauty. Following the incredible success of last year’s inaugural event, organiser Shane Webster has been hard at work with his team of experienced riders to fine tune an even better ride for the 200 teams expected this year. “For example, the second day’s improved route through Phinda takes riders off gravel and onto much more exciting tracks,” says Shane. “From the heights

of the stunning Lebombo Mountains, the route drops off onto a downhill section with views across to iSimangaliso’s False Bay and coastline. On a clear day, it is actually possible to see both the start and distant finish, from the same point – the only staged MTB event in SA that features this.” The route includes four of iSimangaliso’s main sections, being uMkhuze, False Bay, Western Shores, and Eastern Shores, as well as spectacular parts of Phinda, the floodplain areas of Hluhluwe River Lodge alongside the shores of Lake St Lucia, and the Bonamanzi bushveld. Riders traverse some really off-the-grid territory, using game paths, jeep tracks and as little gravel as possible. You don’t need to be superman to conquer the challenge but proven experience in long distance rides (>75km) is essential. “For serious mountain bikers, there is everything you could possibly wish for,” says iSimangaliso CEO, Andrew

we were sulky, sullen teenagers. He would come and sit on the bed while we rolled our eyes and fielded his questions about school and friends and weekend plans. We tried to ignore him, but he would stay patiently, even sitting in relaxed silence until eventually we would start to chat. He had the wisdom and patience to just hang out until we overcame our adolescent indifference and we would end up laughing and telling stories. When it came time for him to say ‘no’, or set limits, or negotiate some conflict with us, there was a bridge already built. Instead of generally keeping his distance and then occasionally intervening to tell us what to do, we had a relational currency that he used when it mattered. I only realise what a difference it made now that I try the same thing with my boys.

Taught Me ‘Don’t you wish that you had a son?’ This was a question often directed at my father, who has three daughters, of which I am the eldest. Every time, he answered quickly and with conviction, ‘Nope. I love being a dad to girls.’ And he really does. Even when the house was full of GHDs, giggling girls and with clothes strewn all over the place, my dad seldom moaned about the lack of testosterone in his home. To my dad, we were never little princesses waiting to be rescued. We were brave explorers with something important and significant to offer the world. I think that’s why all three of us are opinionated, adventurous women, full of ideas and passion. We did plays and drama, but we also put posters of our favourite cricket players up on our walls. He went to endless ballet concerts and piano recitals, but he also taught us the rules of rugby and how to surf. I remember a friend’s parents chuckling at me as an 11-year-old little girl shouting, ‘Oh come ON, Ref, that was SO off-sides!’ during a Sharks game — a tribute to my rugby-mad dad. I learnt more from my dad than how to spot a biased referee, though. As I now parent two children of my own, I think back on what was normal in my childhood and realise that amongst the many things that he showed me,

there are a few that stand out and shape the way that I try to do things now. Don’t take things too seriously Every morning on the way to school, we would drive past the local boys’ high school. This was a major event for us 13-year-olds — straining to see which boys we knew, but dying of embarrassment if one of the white-blazered prefects spotted us gawking. My dear father would frequently slow the car to a snail’s pace, press down on the hooter and not let go until we were past the school. Always the clown, he knew just what buttons to push to get us laughing at what other people might think of us. When we were smaller, and still sometimes as we got older, on the drive to school he would keep driving around and around the traffic circles in our neighbourhood until we were all propelled over to one side of the car, laughing and begging him to stop. To a kid, school and friends and the opposite sex can be overwhelming. My dad would somehow casually put it into context for us and remind us that taking these things too seriously can steal all the joy and light out of everyday life. Say it with actions, not just words My dad lived out what mattered and usually he showed us, instead of just telling us. When each of us turned 13, he took us on our first date. He opened the car door for me, took me to dinner, and told me, ‘This is how a boy should treat you.’ He also asked my hapless Grade 11 dance date, ‘So, young man, what are you doing with your life?’ and then told him that he would punch him in the nose if anything happened to me. It was one of the most mortifying moments of my life, but secretly I loved to tell that story because I knew that he set the standards high because he thought that I was the best. He said it all the time, without saying it at all. A couple of years ago, I was setting the table for some special event at my folks’ house and I complained that my mom never had nice, fancy decor to make it all look pretty. My dad quickly reminded me that they had always chosen to take us kids on a holiday somewhere rather than to buy something new for the house and that we had been privileged enough to have had some amazing experiences as a family. It was a humbling reminder that people matter more than stuff and he seldom had to say it, because he actually lived it. Of course, my dad wasn’t perfect and growing up you soon become aware of the struggles and faults of your childhood hero. But, to be honest, the lack of perfection just made him more real and more reachable. I hope to give my kids these same gifts some day. Happy Father’s Day, Dad

Ingredients • 6-7 sheets frozen puff pastry • 400g beef mince • 1 small carrot, peeled • 1 medium potato, peeled • ½ cup frozen peas • 1 small brown onion, peeled • 1 teaspoon salt • freshly cracked pepper • 1 tablespoon cornflour • 1 egg, lightly beaten

Method of half the pastry rounds. Using the lightly beaten egg, brush the egg wash around the edges of the pastry round then pick up another pastry round and very gently stretch pastry. Place over mixture and fold around both edges to seal. Place the pasties on a baking tray with baking

Preheat the oven to 200°C. Take pastry sheets from the freezer and lay flat on table to thaw. Using a food processor or hand grater, grate a carrot, onion and potato. Remove from processor to mixing bowl and add beef mince, peas, salt and pepper. Mix well to combine. Cut the thawed pastry into small rounds using the base of a large cup or small saucer approx 9-10 cm in diameter.

Add three teaspoons of gelatin to the boiling water.

3. Let it soften before stirring with a fork. 4. Add a quarter of a cup of corn syrup. 5. Stir the mixture again with your fork and look at the long strands of gunk that have formed. 6. As the mixture cools slowly add more water, small amounts at a time. What’s happening? Mucus is made mostly of sugars and protein. Although different than the ones found in the real thing, this is exactly what you used to make your fake snot. The long, fine strings you could see inside your fake snot when you moved it around are protein strands. The Audi A3 Compact words Richard Webb

Most car journalists are given a week to evaluate a new car. Richard Webb just spent 45 hours driving the Audi A3 Tdi Sedan over a mere five days, racking up more than 3,500km. The sedan models are gaining in popularity in important overseas markets and that’s why we are seeing cars like the A3 Sedan and Mercedes-Benz’ CLA. At first glance, the A3 may not look like every single exterior body panel has changed from its Sportback sister, but they have. Unfortunately it is still a product of the Audi school of ‘same sausage, different length’ design, making it very easy to mistake the Audi A3 sedan for an A4. A normal week of testing equates to about 700 or so kilometers of running about on a daily, domestic grind of school runs, meetings and the general ‘busy-ness’ of modern life. Rarely do journalists re-fill the tank several times and give the car an extended test. How would it feel to intensify the normal weekly test, I pondered? 45 hours in a car in five days has a way of focusing the mind on the cabin, as you can imagine. I must say that it’s impeccably finished with only the very finest quality plastic surfaces. There’s not a single

surface that lets you down, and the minimalist layout offers almost perfect ergonomics, particularly when it’s dark and you are getting tired from a long days’ driving. All A3 sedans get alloy wheels, a folding screen that rises from the dashboard, dual zone climate control, iPod connectivity Bluetooth and a multi-function steering wheel. As you’d expect there are plenty of optional extras too, like all-LED headlights. Upgrading to S Line gets you sportier bodywork and a sportier cabin complete with different seats and a flatbottomed steering wheel. The 2.0-litre TDI SE manual, which costs R355 500, gives eager acceleration, and whilst the 110kW/350Nm engine is a little growly at low speeds, it swiftly settles into a melodic thrum on national road cruising. The six-speed manual I tried is precise and well spaced, returning a real world 5.3L/100km over the 3,569km journey at an average speed of 79km/h.

I came away with the strong sense that the new A3 sedan will lap-up any punishing, high milage commutes, whilst dispensing an elegantly safe travel all with relatively frugal running costs. Just don’t expect to stand out of the crowd. Like the A3 tdi? Consider something different… The 2.1-litre turbodiesel CLA220 CDI. Mercedes-Benz has been extending its range aggressively and the CLA represents another shift. Being a front-wheel-drive saloon based on the A-Class would suggest it being a natural rival to the Audi A3 Sedan, but may end up being bought more by a potential Audi A4 buyer. The idea with this car is that it’s a relatively affordable (R397 600.00 in Sport 7-speed Automatic guise) but has the associated style and innovation of its distinctively curvy and different bigger brother, the CLS. In a market where uniformity is the rule, Mercedes should be praised for producing something pretty and different.
