Chris excitedly came to visit us at the start of this magazine, excited at the growth of palm lakes (not so excited at the amount of work everyone now has extra lol) .. How wonderful to hear about the growth of an estate that we feel very much a part of as we have been there.. from the beginning .. it feels like forever now. Palm Lakes has a very special place in our hearts as does all the staff, managers and of course, Wim and Olivia. How special is the front cover of this edition? We love it and that you to all that entered; we think it was such a FAB idea to do!! we also meet 3 very interesting neighbours this edition and then of course we love hearing all that Chris talk about nature wise, and don’t stress peeps, Zimbali, Seaward and Simbithi Estates all have the FABULOUS African Rock python’s in them too, in Seward specifically we have seen at least 4 different big boys ... and they pop up often all over the estate. So just enjoy the fact that nature is thriving in your estate, and always remember most species of anything (except monkeys I think) are more afraid of you, then you are of them, so they hear you (or your children coming ... and they move in the opposite direction) ... Till next edition!! We look forward to hearing from you with your news and photo’s ..

Family Estate

PALM LAKES

Dear residents and readers, We can again look back on some busy months. Firstly, we made Ryan and Shannon very happy when it was announced that they were the winners of our front cover competition. The prize-giving was a pleasant occasion during which Vanessa Aaron and her family were told that they were the winners of the second prize. Congratulations! Our marketing team has been working on a new movie advertisement about the estate, which has some really funky background music. Great work, guys! It’s a must-see on the homepage of our website, www. palmlakes.co.za. Special thanks must go to Simon and Matthew Wilkes, who are a great duo. They recently produced a movie about Durban and, according the Courier, they had 40 000 hits on YouTube during the first week. The fitness fanatics and pregnant ladies on our estate are sure to be very happy with the new lap pool, which, because of all the heavy rain, took much longer to complete than expected.

Sales are still booming and it’s interesting to note that, of all the estates in Kwadakuza, Palm Lakes has submitted the highest number of building plans. The phase behind Palms 11 and 12 is almost sold out and we are, therefore, about to start construction on the services for Phase 2DA1, which consists of 78 freehold stands. Sub-phase 1 of the Palm Lakes Retirement Village is sold out and we have already contracted the next phase out. I regret that I have to inform you that the Numz Island Adventure Park will not, unfortunately, open in 2014 as scheduled. According to the owners of this new development, the main reason for the postponement is the poor water supply at this time. The good news, however, is that Umgeni Water is investing R3 billion at the Hazelmere Facility, with a second R2.2 billion development on the Tugela River, to increase the water supply. I trust that you will enjoy reading this issue.

CONSERVATION AND WILD LIFE Family photogenic competition Retirement Village Expansion at Palm Lakes

PALM LAKES 5

MARCH 2014 The seasons are changing, autumn is upon us with a cool breeze at nights and fresh mornings. The colours of the leaves on the trees are all changing from the bright greens to duller colours and the seed heads on the grasses are brown. One finds less birds coming to the feeding trays as they start stripping the natural seeds. The cuckoo’s have already left and the swallows are starting to gather along the lines which means they will also soon be gone. I believe autumn is coming early and the low level of rain over the last few months has not helped.

As you drive around the estate you will see all the new stands being cleared for development. You will also see the new roads being built as you drive down Tanganyika Boulevard towards the school. The new road which will lead into the retirement village is nearing completion and opens a whole new area of development at Palm Lakes. The first new homes in the retirement village are nearing completion and the rate of build has astounded everybody. The next phase of Sunset Place is well underway with the roofs of the first three houses going on.

With only 50mm of rain in January, 31mm in February and 123.5mm as at the 27th March means that we are well down on the going rate.

We also have to thank Chris Garland and his construction team for designing and building the bridge across the spill over of the dam below Palms 7/8. This is a big improvement to safety in this area.

All this aside Palm Lakes is a hive of activity which just seems to get busier month on month.

I once again want to thank Chris Garland and his team from Frontline Security for a 100% safety record. I also want to thank the staff from Integrated Systems who operate our control room and the team from Alarm Fencing who maintain our security fence for a job well done.

I would once again like to share the following statistics with you.

Meet the

Meet J J and Rita Gerber who live in Palms 7, Palm Lakes estate. Rie and I were invited to have coffee and homemade tarts and cakes with this lovely couple. J J and Rita are now in their third year on the estate which is very dear to their hearts. J J was born and raised in George in the Cape Province where he did all his schooling. He then joined Iscor for the next 40 years managing their blast furnace at Newcastle in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Rita was born in Ceres in the Western Cape and moved with her parents to Helpmekaar in Kwa-Zulu Natal when she was 3 years old. Rita schooled in Dundee. J J and Rita met in Dundee, got married and settled in Newcastle where Rita worked for the local doctors. After their many years in Newcastle the couple retired to Scottburgh on the South Coast where their children had settled. Scottburgh was also selected because they wanted to live near the sea, and the Scottburgh caravan park carried many happy holiday memories for them. They have three children, one boy and two girls and are blessed with seven grandchildren. Their son and his family live in Piet Retief where he works as a mine manager. Their eldest daughter and her family live in Rustenburg where she works in finance. Their son in law married to their youngest daughter worked for ARB in South Africa and accepted a transfer to Perth in Australia. J J is a keen fisherman, both in the sea and fresh water. He is regularly seen bass fishing in our lakes around Palm Lakes. He is also a keen

gardener which is obvious as you approach their apartment. J J loves taking long walks around the estate and often gives me up to date reports. Rita is very keen on sewing, doing stitch-work and baking and is a very busy and proud housewife. Rita also has a very caring nature and assists in looking after the sick and frail. Both J J and Rita were involved in transporting the Trinity House kids back and forth but had to stop as they needed special driving licenses. Why their move to Palm Lakes ?? While living in Amanazimtoti they were caught up in the floods which damaged a lot of their furniture. As their children who were then living in Simbithi were getting ready to move to Australia they drove around all the North Coast estates looking for a secure and flood free area for their parents to retire at. As they entered the Palm Lakes entrance and while driving around seeing the young children walking and cycling around the estate they realised, this was the place. One look at the apartment was love at first sight and they signed there and then. To both J J and Rita the high level of security is a strong point. They both love the fresh air and open spaces. Rita would like to see some changes to the clubhouse offering more for the mature ladies on the estate, I promised to discuss this at the next trustee meeting.

The couple met while working at McCord’s hospital. They courted for two and a half years and got married in 2005. They moved into a complex at Mt Edgecombe and their two children Ethan now 6 and their daughter Leah now 4 years old were both born at the Alberlito Hospital in Ballito. Their third child Liam was born on the 17th December 2013. When I asked them why Palm Lakes ? They had looked around all the estates and in the end decided on Palm Lakes as they were very happy with the security, and it would be closer for Elen to travel to Ulundi and Trinity School was a big draw card. They bought their property in 2007 and planned their new home which they moved into in 2009. Both Ethan and his sister Leah attend Trinityhouse Palm Lakes. Natasha’s mom Mary also lives with them.

With a nip in the air in the evenings one realises that the seasons are about to change. The position of the sun in the mornings has started to swing around and Autumn has started. Timing is a bit out but, hey, so is the wind, the rainfall (or lack of it) and one has to acknowledge that GLOBAL WARMING is real and is starting to affect weather patterns and the seasons. But at Palm Lakes life continues at a hectic pace. Our Impala herd added four new little ones in December/January. The herd is looking very healthy, their body weight looks good which means they have enough to eat and I am very happy not to see a single tick on them. They have also started moving all over the estate. Yes our mail Duiker still visits our garden regularly and the bird life increases all the time. And yes, our African Python is still around. The driver of the excavator that was cutting the path for the storm water drains below the retirement village was reaching the end of the cut in rather thick bush when he flushed the python who took one look at this big metal monster bearing down on him and fled, while the wide eyed driver, on seeing the python switched off the machine and fled in the opposite direction, so, no injuries, just caution on both sides.

Our latest project is adding some Helmeted Guineafowl onto the estate. We have observed one pair that crosses into the estate from time to time. One of John Cottrell’s friends phoned and asked if we would like to add our own flock and I readily accepted. We were kindly given an incubator with thirty eggs, a hatching box with a infrared lamp fitted to the roof dome (to keep the little chicks warm until they are big enough to move into the rearing cages) plus bags of food and a long list of doe’s and don’ts in hatching and rearing guineafowl. Then the fun began, the eggs in the incubator have to get a quarter turn four times a day, you have to monitor the situation mornings and evenings and remove the newly hatched chicks as soon as they are strong enough and place them in the heated hatching box until they are big enough to go into the cages. The eggs hatch in around 26 days. We then had to build a large chicken run for the bigger birds to grow strong in until they can be released into the bush and the natural environment where they belong. So, when you start to see some black/blue sized chickens with white spots, a bony casque on the head , red facial skin and blue upper neck you know you have found one of our own home bred Helmeted Guineafowl (Numida Meleagris). Roberts give us the following interesting facts about them: Status: Locally common resident but decreasing in numbers in some regions since the 1980’s. Habitat: Widespread; from near-desert to forest margins. Common in grain croplands. Food: Omnivorous : Insects, seeds, bulbs, tubers and berries.

One morning while driving past Palms 2 I received an excited phone call from Wendy Ludwig, come and see what we have found !!!!!!! I turned around to find both her daughters sitting on the lawn watching a Mountain Tortoise making his way towards them. Jordan the older sister (the adventures one) was quite at ease and very interested, but her younger sister Jesse was not as sure as you can see from the look on her face. The Mountain Tortoise (Bergskilpad) (Geochelone pardalis) can reach a length of 30 – 60 cm and weigh 8 – 20 kg. In young like this one the background colour of the carapace is yellow, blotched and streaked with black. As they grow older their colour changes to a uniform deep brown. The mountain, or leopard tortoise is the most widely distributed and also the biggest of the 12 species found in Southern Africa. It is believed to take its name “mountain” tortoise from its size rather than its habitat. The alternative name of “leopard” tortoise comes from the black and yellow blotched patterns on its high domed carapace. The mountain tortoise is mostly vegetarian, feeding on a variety of plant matter, including grass shoots, succulents such as cotyledons, fungi and fruit. As with all other tortoise species, the female lays her 5 – 20 hard-shelled eggs in a hole she has dug; then she fills it in. The incubation period varies from 8 – 14 months.
