In the first two months of 2020, Europa Nostra convened a series of meetings with the new European Union leaders, including the Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel (photo 1); the Vice-President and Commissioner in charge of Promoting our European Way of Life, Margaritis Schinas; and the Chair and Vice-Chair of the Committee on Culture and Education of the European Parliament, Sabine Verheyen and Dace Melbãrde. These meetings aimed at continuing and enhancing our long-standing partnership with the European Institutions, and at nurturing a constructive dialogue with the EU leaders in charge of cultural heritage-related policies at the very start of their mandate.

On 9 May, on the occasion of Europe Day, the European Heritage Alliance – coordinated by Europa Nostra – launched the Alliance Manifesto “Cultural Heritage: a powerful catalyst for the future of Europe” (image 2, cover). Through this Manifesto, released in the midst of the Covid-19 crisis, the Alliance expressed the readiness of the wider heritage world to contribute to Europe’s immediate social and economic recovery, as well as to the longer-term advancement of the European project. This Manifesto puts forward 7 of the most important ways in which cultural heritage can act as a catalyst for positive change. Au cours des deux premiers mois de 2020, Europa Nostra a organisé une série de réunions avec les nouveaux dirigeants de l’UE, notamment la Commissaire à l’innovation, la recherche, la culture, l’éducation et la jeunesse, Mariya Gabriel (photo 1) ; le Vice-président et Commissaire chargé de la promotion de notre mode de vie européen, Margaritis Schinas ; et la Présidente et la Vice-présidente de la commission Culture et Education du Parlement européen, Sabine Verheyen et Dace Melbãrde. Ces réunions avaient pour but de poursuivre et de renforcer notre partenariat de longue date avec les Institutions européennes, et d’entretenir un dialogue constructif avec les dirigeants de l’UE en charge des politiques liées au patrimoine culturel.

Le 9 mai, à l’occasion de la Journée de l’Europe, l’Alliance européenne du patrimoine - coordonnée par Europa Nostra - a lancé le Manifeste de l’Alliance européenne du patrimoine “Le patrimoine culturel : un

catalyseur puissant pour l’avenir de l’Europe” (image 2, couverture). Par ce Manifeste, publié en pleine crise du Covid-19, l’Alliance a exprimé la volonté du monde du patrimoine au sens large de contribuerà la reprise sociale et économique immédiate de l’Europe, ainsi qu'à l’avancement à plus long terme du projet européen. Ce Manifeste met en avant 7 des plus importantes façons dont le patrimoine culturel peut agir comme catalyseur de changement positif.

On 14 October, Europa Nostra published the extensive paper “Covid-19 & BEYOND: Challenges and Opportunities for Cultural Heritage” (photo 3). This strategic paper provides unequivocal evidence of how deeply the pandemic has affected the heritage world and makes concrete proposals to support the heritage sector through existing EU instruments and those proposed within the ‘Next Generation EU’ socio-economic recovery plan.

On 18 November, Europa Nostra, also on behalf of the European Heritage Alliance, Culture Action Europe and the European Cultural Foundation, co-hosted the webinar “A Cultural Deal for Europe” (image 4). One week later, the organisers issued the joint statement “A Cultural Deal for Europe: A central place for culture in the EU’s post-pandemic future”, which puts forward an overarching and transversal Cultural Deal for Europe, including a series of concrete proposals for realising the potential of culture and heritage as major forces in the EU’s socio-economic recovery and its long-term future.

On 19 November a preview of the European Cultural Heritage Green Paper took place during an online event organised by the Climate Heritage Network in partnership with Europa Nostra and ICOMOS and with the support of the European Investment Bank Institute. Le 18 novembre, Europa Nostra, également au nom de l’Alliance européenne du patrimoine, de Culture Action Europe et de la Fondation européenne de la culture, a co-organisé le webinaire “Un Accord Culturel pour l’Europe” (image 4). Une semaine plus tard, les organisateurs ont publié la déclaration commune “Un Accord Culturel pour l’Europe : une place centrale pour la culture dans l’avenir post-pandémique de l’UE”, qui propose un accord culturel global et transversal pour l'Europe, comprenant une série de propositions concrètes pour réaliser le potentiel de la culture et du patrimoine en tant que forces majeures dans la relance socioéconomique de l’UE et son avenir à long terme.

heritage in contributing to the achievement of the European Green Deal’s ambitions and to mobilise the heritage community to realise its full potential (photo 5). The document was presented by its Lead Author, Andrew Potts, Coordinator of the ICOMOS Climate Change and Heritage Working Group.

Europa Nostra welcomed the initiative announced by the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on 16 September concerning the launch of a New European Bauhaus, seen “as a necessary bridge between the world of science and technology, on the one hand, and the world of art and culture, on the other” (image 6). In December, in a statement conveyed to the President of the European Commission, Europa Nostra voiced the need to duly include cultural heritage as an integral part of the New European Bauhaus.

At the end of the year, the European Investment Bank released the seminal essay “Togetherness – A New Heritage Deal for Europe” written by Prof. Dr. Hermann Parzinger. In this major essay published in six languages, the Executive President of Europa Nostra advocates for a heritage-led transformation of Europe’s society, economy and the environment (photo 7). 7

Europa Nostra a salué l’initiative annoncée par la Présidente de la Commission européenne, Ursula von der Leyen, le 16 septembre, concernant le lancement du nouveau Bauhaus européen (image 6). En décembre, dans une déclaration transmise à la Présidente de la Commission européenne, Europa Nostra a exprimé la nécessité d’inclure dûment le patrimoine culturel comme partie intégrante du nouveau Bauhaus européen.

À la fin de l’année, la Banque européenne d’investissement a publié l’essai fondamental “Ce qui nous lie - Un nouveau pacte pour le patrimoine européen”, rédigé par le professeur Hermann Parzinger. Dans cet essai, le Président exécutif d’Europa Nostra plaide en faveur d’une transformation de la société, de l’économie et de l’environnement européens fondée sur le patrimoine (photo 7).
