umundi Green is celebrating its fifth anniversary with this Issue 128. The owners of the community magazine, Eumundi Combined Community Organisation Ltd (ECCO), are thrilled that this milestone has been reached. ECCO chair Sam Scanlon said, “It is a remarkable achievement for our small town and district and I join with my fellow directors in thanking the Green advertisers, our readers, our dozens of volunteers and supporters everywhere. You made it happen five years ago and together you have sustained the magazine with great enthusiasm through thick and thin. “Right now our local economy is considered by many to be in bad shape. It is important then that Eumundi Green continues to show leadership with news and views, by promoting local businesses, by connecting people and remaining

vibrant in this period of economic, political, and social uncertainty. Eumundi Green is community glue. “We know that many valued business partners are facing plenty of trading challenges. Eumundi Green is facing a downturn in its advertising revenue. We’re tightening our belt as we are absolutely committed to continuing to deliver a fortnightly publication that fulfils our vision of ‘taking the essence of Eumundi to the world’ and supports businesses when they need it the most – now! "We plan to strengthen our operating base in a number of ways and we hope that our loyal supporters will join with us to ensure a strong future for Eumundi Green way past the next five anniversaries. On page 5 we outline five of our belt-tightening strategies we intend to pursue over the next couple of months,” Sam said.

In the last couple of weeks Council surprised Eumundi by changing Napier Rd to Brandt St without notice. Following representations by the Eumundi Chamber of Commerce to Div 10 Cr Paul Tatton outlining the significant changes required to location details for police, child care, rural fire service, markets and car parks, the decision has been reversed and the name Napier Rd was re-installed this week.

est wishes to dads everywhere for Fathers Day. We hope you enjoy our Fathers Day features.. Joyce Turnbull editor@eumundigreen.com.au

was reluctant, at first, to write about my ‘street’ as Capricorn Crt is such a quiet and peaceful place. Being a Court, there is no through traffic and kids play in and around the road, and everyone looks out for each other and pretty much everyone knows everyone else! We arrived in 1994 moving up from Adelaide to the green pastures of the hinterland. We moved our house here from Brisbane, a lovely old Queenslander, which sits very nicely in this beautiful countryside. Back then we were surrounded by 10 acres of vacant land, it had been a 600 acre dairy farm and only a few houses were here. We used to drive down the block across the causeway on to Lone Hand Rd, (great

fun!) and cut the grass with a tractor, all very different for city people. There were very few trees and it took a lot of work to turn it into the overgrown forest that we have now! Still, the animals and birds have returned and we feel blessed to have their company. We’ve had such a good time living here and met some amazing people. Now we are surrounded by million dollar properties, but the feeling is still the same - Paradise!

How to survive a market downturn Q: What can I do to survive the ongoing market downturn? Know your business: Are you staying ahead of the game? Are your structures, finances, people and systems all working in harmony to deliver great products and service? A downturn in the economy is a great time to review how efficient your business is, where you could save money or increase your cash flow. Cultivate relationships and networks: Whatever you do, in business or in life, the old adage “it’s not what you know but who you know” is true. Take an interest in your local community, be generous with your time and energy, make new contacts and offer to help. The next person you meet might be the one who saves your business bacon. Look for new opportunities and be open to them: There are still dollars out there and people willing or needing to spend, so how will you make sure they are spending with you? Gaining market share is what that’s all about – getting your share of the pie. Don’t disappear by cutting back on communicating with your customers through advertising. Just change your tactics to get better value for money to deliver a strong call to action and create new business enquiry. Kerrie Bryant-Adams, secretary

ur August meeting was held at Joe’s Waterhole and we were fortunate to have both Glen Elmes MP and Div 10 Councillor Paul Tatton in attendance. Glen provided members with an overview of what we might expect leading into the state election, issues in our electorate and also discussion around de-amalgamation. Glen also discussed the impact of new legislation on business in relation to waste and other key environmental issues. Cr Paul Tatton provided insight into changes being made from a Council perspective in the area and also the work that is to be carried out in Eumundi with additional seating, new signage to replace the sign in Caplick Park to assist visitors in finding their way around the town rather than out of town, as well as improvements to areas such as the roundabouts from each of the approaches into Eumundi. Members also raised concern about the painting on the guardrails coming into Eumundi and their unsightly appearance and Glen commented that he would follow this up at state level Main Roads. There was a great deal of discussion around the changing of Napier Rd at the Police Station end to Brandt St without any consultation and the inconvenience to businesses who had not been notified that not only affects their listings, stationery, but also GPS devices, etc. Paul agreed to follow this up as to the rationale and logic of changing a street name that is synonymous with Eumundi and the impact on businesses and services that operate in that street. A different meeting format will be trialled at the September meeting where activity reports would be provided in advance. The Chamber will introduce a guest speaker every second meeting to assist members with their business in times of economic hardship. Any enquiries in relation to new membership please contact Felicity Newman 5442 7879. For all other matters associated with the Eumundi Chamber of Commerce Inc please email the Secretary at ecc@eumundi.info or go online to www.eumundi.info. Next Meeting: Monday 19 September 6pm at the residence of Maree Thomson and Mick Barton, 109-111 Memorial Dr Eumundi (Up shared driveway, house on left). Business and Community News New chapter for Eumundi Scouts hall

Country theme for staff conference

Question Would you be able to let us know if and when restoration work will be carried out on Eumundi Range Rd between Caplick Way and the Lookout. We know there have been many demands following the long period of rain but this road is characterised and has been for a long time by a series of patches and pot holes.

Response Council appreciates that road surfaces across the region have suffered from the months of summer rain and nowhere more than in the Eumundi area perhaps where rainfall has at times been the heaviest in the region. Following assessment of the state of the roads in the Eumundi area, Council has a long list of works in priority order. There is of course a backlog of work for the road repair crews but roads such as the Eumundi Range Rd are definitely "a work in progress". The section of Eumundi Range Rd between Caplick Way and the C Ball Lookout has been assessed with works prioritised. Pavement failure repairs have been completed to a number of higher priority patches along this section of road over the last two months. Further work is expected to commence in the near future.

Sunshine Coast Regional Council

Making sure of the Green’s future

M

embers of the “Green” board of Eumundi Green are leading the “tightening our belt” campaign and we ask for your understanding and assistance where you can as the following five strategies are implemented over the months ahead:  by an innovative campaign to grow our advertising revenue  by trialling new initiatives such as a special markets edition of Eumundi Green for distribution away from the Sunshine Coast four times a year  by inviting anyone who is not an advertiser, sponsor or volunteer with Eumundi Green to consider becoming a Friend of Eumundi Green by contributing the equivalent of $2 per issue, ie $50 per annum to help sustain the magazine; Friends will in return receive several benefits such as a chance to win a valuable holiday prize at a nearby resort

in September, regular lucky draws for a charity of choice and an annual discount card for use with participating advertisers of Eumundi Green – watch this space!”  by making sure income and expenditure at least match for each issue of Eumundi Green; we plan to reduce the number of pages in each issue where that is necessary commensurate with the advertising iand other income  by incorporating our trading post insert Green Leaf into the magazine itself on page 8 with an upgraded format and with a price increase to $8 per line for colour and wider column width. Please look at the changed look of Green Leaf on page 8 of this issue “We welcome as always your feedback and support for the Green, our great managing editor and our talented professionals and dedicated volunteers,” Sam said.

Invitation to buskers

n a visit to friends, we were charmed by Eumundi. There are so many good things here. Tempted, we bought a house 5km from the centre of the village. Three years on, I still relish the wonderful post office which opens on Saturday mornings so we can take care of all the transactions we otherwise would have to give up a lunch-break to do; the several good restaurants that serve fresh, local and frequently organic products to which we are addicted to frequenting; pubs; a theatre; a superb bookstore; a bakery or two; a pharmacy and a medical centre. Please note, I did not say the markets! Sure, the markets are great if I want to while away a morning. It is then worth driving down to the car park and paying $4 to park. It’s a very reasonable fee for a morning. But is it reasonable if I just want to pop into the post office, the bakers or the pharmacy?

Do I really want to add 20 minutes to my five minute errand time by queuing for the car park, trudging up to the main street then having to trudge back again? I know we wouldn’t have many of the amenities I love were it not for the crowds attracted on market day. I am aware that the income generated from the market rents and the car park helped reopen the medical centre and provided the community bus. I know the markets were probably why the top end of Memorial Dr looks so lovely now, but why oh why can’t the residents have free, reserved 15 minute parking spots in the main street on market days? An alternative solution would be to spend some community money on putting in a footpath which runs the length of Eumundi Range Rd, instead of stopping at Finley Rd, then those of us who live “up the hill” may be tempted to combine exercise and errands!

his week we are seeking public help to identify offenders responsible for a number of offences which occurred in our division. Offenders have broken into a house in Eulinga Ct, Ninderry by removing a fly screen and sliding open an unlocked window. Once inside the offender has stolen a wallet and purse containing credit cards. These cards were then unlawfully used to purchase a large amount of goods at various businesses. A vehicle was damaged behind the Eumundi butchers. The black Holden Astra was parked there during the day and unknown offenders have caused damage to the front end by unknown means.

In another unrelated incident a window was smashed at a house in Bunya Rd North Arm by unknown persons. A motive for this offence is unclear at this stage as the house was not entered and it just appears to be a deliberate act of malicious damage. We are also seeking information in relation to a Giant Yukon brand bicycle silver in colour with an orange stripe. The bike was stolen from under a business in Memorial Dr during the last week. It has been seen on two occasions since being ridden around town. If anyone has any information relating to these matters your help would be greatly appreciated. Contact Eumundi Police on 5442 8222.

Your Say Taking the Eumundi walk After reading the directions for a short walk in the last Eumundi Green, I suggested to a friend from Brisbane that we give it a test run. My friend Ruth had just returned from a three week walking holiday and was interested in a local walk followed by lunch in Eumundi. Parts of it were a challenge, but aptly described. The directions were explicit and we had no trouble combining the map and instructions. The timing was accurate and the walk interesting enough to make us look forward to the next published Eumundi Conservation Park walk. Thanks to the Green and Elizabeth Vacher for adding another local activity for us and our visitors to enjoy. Lyndall Friend Belli Park What is best for us by us The issue of de-amalgamation needs to be approached thoroughly and intelligently. Any future decisions need to be based on a shared vision of what we want as a community, not just what we may perceive as beneficial, and importantly, what the actual costs will be to us as rate payers should we de-

amalgamate. Amalgamation has come at a great cost and it will be sometime before we see any tangible benefits. I have no doubt that the majority of the Sunshine Coast residents would like to embrace the Noosa model for sustainability and level of development, but even with de-amalgamation, there are no guarantees. I also have no doubt that the original reason for amalgamation was political. Local government only exists through an Act of State Government as it is not recognised under the Australian Constitution. Amalgamation will make it easier for political parties to run teams, such as in Brisbane, with the danger that Council is ultimately a puppet of the State. Noosa, either as part of the Sunshine Coast region, or as a separate identity, will not be immune from political pressures from State governments to allow more development, irrespective of ideologies. We can still maintain our community values and identity with an amalgamated Council. And, I believe, we can achieve more by being part of a wider region. With time we will mature

ourteen students from Cooroy State School participated in an internationally-recognised environmental education event held on the Sunshine Coast on 11-12 August. The 2011 Australia Post Queensland Kids Teaching Kids Conference had the students sharing their ideas on how they can be environmental superheroes. Students, under the guidance

of Narelle Nightingale and Annie Bailey, with support from The Sunshine Coast Council and Noosa Landcare, researched an environmental topic and developed a fun, interactive, educational 40 minute workshop which they presented at the conference. Their workshop “Weeds to Wonderland” covered the reestablishing of the ecosystem at the Lower Mill Site in Cooroy.

Community Support Walk with Me

R

ohan, the son of Lyn and Justin McDonald of Eumundi, is a very courageous little boy. Born with Tibial Aplasia, which means he has a lack of bones, at just four years old Rohan has endured two major operations on his legs, will have more surgery at the end of the year and is on his tenth set of prosthetic legs. The Sunshine Coast branch of MontroseAccess, a not-for-profit group that supports young people with disabilities and their families, has supported the McDonalds since Rohan was six months old. Lyn said they are very grateful for its support with speech therapy and physiotherapy, equipment loans and home visits. “In the earlier days, we would call a lot as we weren’t sure as we’ve never done this before,” she said. “They were great and very supportive and really helped us get our heads around it all.” The McDonald family is now taking the opportunity to give back, Rohan having been chosen as one of three young ambassadors in MontroseAccess’s first Walk with Me event on the Coast

on Saturday 10 September, when residents, sports stars, councillors and business people will walk with local children with a disability, aiming to raise $40,000 for the Sunshine Coast branch. “We’re so proud of Rohan for being an ambassador,” Lyn said. “The walk is a great way to get the message out there about MontroseAccess and the great services it provides families like us with children with mobility issues.” Local and community organisations have also supported Rohan and his family. Julie Templeton of Riding for Disabled Sunshine Coast (RDA), based at Yandina, said Rohan has ridden with them since he was small and recently featured in a Channel 7 story on the RDA. Rohan is excitedly awaiting the delivery, via the US, of a handpedal trike, ordered and funded by the Eumundi and District Community Association (EDCA). The $1200 trike was specially made for Rohan in his requested colour of red. EDCA secretary/

Woofstock 2011 Pampered pooches return to Eumundi

I

t had that Eumundi magic. That is what Woofstock director Dave Daly said about the inaugural event last year and why they are bringing it back to Eumundi on Sunday 11 September. “When you call an event Woofstock you need an area with a great earthy feel about it,” Dave said. “When I first spoke to Eumundi Markets manager Peter Homan about the idea, he agreed Eumundi is the place for it.” Dave said last year they only expected crowds in the hundreds for their first ever Woofstock, but dogs and their owners came in droves. “Everyone had a smile, especially the dogs, so we just had to bring it back to Eumundi,” he said. Woofstock has established ongoing support from RSPCA QLD with its Educational Mobile Units on site at each event.

The festival provides an avenue for local canines to display their talents among their peers and opportunities for local businesses to showcase their products and services to an already converted audience. “What sets Woofstock apart from other pet events is that it is strictly geared towards dogs and their owners,” Dave said. “This year’s event will feature a list of shows such as Waggiest Tail, Dog – You Got Talent and Doggy Fashions on the Field. This year we will launch our new themed activity called Wet & Woof.” Competitions, giveaways, stalls, entertainment and fun can be enjoyed through the day by dogs, their friends and dog lovers. So come on our doggy readers, grab your owners and come along to the Eumundi Markets site on Sunday 11 September.

A day out for all the family.

Celebrate Food Sicilian apple cake

Pears Sue Campin

P

ears have been popular since ancient times and arguments continue about whether the apple or the pear came on the scene first. There are many ideas about where the term pear-shaped came from. One view suggests the use of pear-shaped to describe something that has gone awry. This assumes of course the original

plan was to create a perfect circle. That is, a pear is a circle gone wrong. Try these wonderfully dense cakes to celebrate the joy of apples and pears, such internationally recognised icons of health and refreshness. Both are a little more complex but worth the effort. Recipe and baking thanks to the wonderful Dr Higgins and Jennifer Bishop!

Pear cake Ingredients 4 eggs 165g caster sugar 125g softened butter 50g plain flour 1 tsp baking powder 375g almond meal 2 tbs amaretto plus extra to serve 2 firm pears – peeled, cored, thickly sliced and rubbed with lemon 25g flaked almonds Icing sugar to dust Mascarpone

Method Beat eggs, caster sugar and softened butter for five minutes until thick and pale. Fold in sifted flour and baking powder and then almond meal and amaretto. Pour mixture into greased, loosebottomed cake tin. Arrange pear slices in a ring on top of the cake mixture pushing them down to almost submerge them. Scatter the flaked almonds on top and bake for 45-50 minutes at 180C until a skewer comes out of the cake clean. Dust with icing sugar and serve with mascarpone and a glass of amaretto.

Ingredients 120g butter melted 50g toasted walnuts ground 1 kg Granny Smith apples 120g raisins 100g pine nuts toasted 250g sugar 3 large eggs 2 tsp vanilla essence zest and juice of 1 lemon 150g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 100 ml full cream milk 3 tbs sugar 1 tsp cinnamon Method Preheat the oven to 170C. Using 20g of the butter grease a

24cm cake tin generously then sprinkle with the ground walnuts. Peel, core and quarter the apples, cut them into slices.Toss the apples with the zest and juice of the lemon and set aside. Whisk the eggs, vanilla and sugar together until pale and creamy. Add the melted butter, flour, baking powder and milk. Mix thoroughly. Pour one third of the batter into the prepared cake tin then top with one third of apple, raisins and pine nuts. Repeat with remaining ingredients and finish with layer of apples. Sprinkle the combined sugar and cinnamon over the top. Bake for 55 minutes.

Health and Lifestyle Which is better – diet or exercise?

Health Matters

W

A

Lee Smith, personal trainer, Make A Difference hen trying to lose weight the age old question has been whether diet or exercise is more effective? The key to weight loss is burning more calories than you eat. Because 3500 calories equals 0.45kg of fat, you need to burn 3500 calories more than you take in to lose 0.45kg. So if you cut 500 calories from your typical diet each day, you’d lose about 0.45kg a week (500 calories x 7 days = 3500 calories). However, you can’t cut back on too many calories because on a superlow-calorie diet, you deprive your body of essential nutrients, and you have a tougher time keeping the weight off because your metabolism slows down. Exercise can help burn off the excess calories that you can’t cut through diet alone. Put simply, exercise helps boost your fat burning potential. The more aerobic the exercise the more

calories you burn. For example, half an hour of fast walking burns 200 calories while jogging for the same amount of time burns 350 calories. But any increase in your exercise level will provide benefits – taking a walk around the block is better than sitting in front of the television! Exercise also offers numerous health benefits, including boosting your mood, strengthening your cardiovascular system and reducing your blood pressure. And exercise can also help in maintaining weight loss. Studies show that people who get regular physical activity maintain their weight loss over the long term. In contrast, people who lose weight by crash dieting or by drastically reducing their calories are likely to regain weight quickly, often within six months after they stop dieting. So, what’s the answer? Exercise plus calorie restriction provides the weight-loss edge.

Organ donations increase

T

he highest ever organ donation rate for the month of July was achieved with 33 deceased donors giving a second chance at life to 98 Australians in need of a transplant. This year has seen the highest organ donation rate of 201 donors and the highest transplant recipient outcome of 593 transplant recipients for the same period in any year since national records began. As at end July 2011, the Australia and New Zealand Organ Donation Registry shows that there were

201 organ donors compared to 174 organ donors for the same period in 2010 representing a 16 per cent increase. This year to date, the number of transplant recipients has increased to 593 transplant recipients compared to 526 for the same period in 2010. Transplant Australia said more people than ever before are now receiving a transplant and this is reflected in the overall official waiting list reducing from 1875 on 3 January 2008 to 1590 at 4 August 2011.

In the Spotlight Bark Design celebrates station opening Caroline Arnett

W

ith four long years in the making, the Noosa Junction Station (formerly the Noosa Transit Centre) at the intersection of Cooyar St and Sunshine Beach Rd has recently been unveiled to reveal a sympathetic environmental triumph for Lindy Atkin and Stephen Guthrie of Bark Design Architects. The “little studio on the hill”, home to Bark Design on Sunrise Road just near Wust Rd Doonan, has been the regional practice engaged to design the major $10m state, federal and local government project which Stephen says will act as a catalyst for the next phase of development of the Junction. One of the criteria the council insisted upon was to appoint a local architect who understood the essence of the region and how people want to live. Of all the teams associated with the project, Lindy and Stephen are enormously proud to be the last people standing, the only continuity from day one. “We’re really looking forward to actually going there,” says Lindy, “taking a spot on one of the recycled timber benches, to see if it’s the same as how we imagined it.” Stephen and Lindy believe that the Eumundi Noosa region provides a “sense of journey” through the abundant environment of trees, boasting beautiful treelined roads, national parks and wetlands. They felt there should be a gradual introduction on the approach to the station, rather than a monumental building, with a play on light and shade that trees create. Interestingly,

Noosa means “place of shade and shadows” which has been an important design statement behind the project. Bark has been thriving on the coast for 14 years. “There’s something really nice about having a regional practice,” says Lindy, “you have more of an identity in a region and more of a community spirit. A lot of regional projects end up being designed by large city practices and you wonder whether perhaps something important doesn’t get translated in that design process.” As well as Bark receiving a number of awards for various buildings in the past, Lindy was the recipient of the 2010 Sunshine Coast “Outstanding Business Woman” award. “It was the first time that I know of that a ‘creative’ had been given this award… the first time the creative industry had been celebrated,” she says proudly. Two of the most important architectural principles to Stephen and Lindy are the drive to create timelessness in their designs and the flexibility for any circumstantial change to both public and domestic projects alike. With their long list of complementary traits, they have successfully created an ideal balance between them that projects their small business forward into the future. People have often wondered what happens in that little studio on the hill and whether they serve pizza or coffee... “Oh you’re architects?” they say. “We might put a coffee machine out the front, for a second income,” Lindy adds with a smile.

Green Tip Those pesky mice! Janet Millington

M

any of us have had regular and prolonged visits from mice this winter as they come in from the fields for shelter. Of course there are several different species and knowing which ones you have helps in knowing how to move them on. The native marsupial mouse or antechinus is a delightful creature but doesn’t make a good house guest. In mating season the courting can last for 12 hours at a time. This exhausts the blokes who die young and the females share the raising of the offspring. You can tell the difference between the native and introduced mice from their droppings. The antechinus leaves long thin dark faeces which may have a white tip and the field mice leave small droppings that look like small dark long grain rice. For poison free deterrents try the following; Sprinkle oil of peppermint or oil of cloves in front of a mouse hole and anywhere you see (or smell) droppings. Mice hate Thursday 1 September 2011

mint fragrance so have sprigs everywhere; in cupboards, behind the fridge and anywhere they have been. They do like to be in warm places so check near the dishwasher as well. Plug any mouse holes with steel wool as they can’t gnaw through that. Put naphthalene flakes under lounge cushions and in places where there isn’t a lot of traffic. Mice also hate walking through talcum powder so this could keep them out of the wardrobe and put fragrance in your clothes at the same time. Relocation is a good strategy but remember if you decide to tolerate them, that each female can raise four to eight offspring each season. If you do find a nest, you could consider asking the wildlife rescue people if they have any native predators that need feeding and give them to the carers so the mice fulfill an honourable service to a recovering native animal.

Welcome Spring! Things are moving along nicely at Experience Eumundi but we could use an extra hand or two. We have a big agenda to implement between now and Christmas and many hands make light work. If you are interested in getting involved please see contact information below

Eumundi in the air On Saturday 13 August, a New Zealand film crew visited Eumundi to produce a DVD of our beautiful town. A number of businesses participated financially supported by ECCO and Experience Eumundi. Louisa from Coco Chocolat, Louis from Eumundi Square Markets, Wendy from Discover Eumundi and Julie from Hidden Valley Bed & Breakfast were interviewed about their businesses and Tina Cooper Gallery, The Christmas Shop and Pavillion Markets were filmed extensively for their colour and visual excitement. The video will be played on Air New Zealand flights through to Christmas touching 40,000 people per week travelling to Australia for work and holidays. The film crew were impressed with our beautiful town and vowed to return to enjoy its delights.

Forward thinking At our next meeting in September a team of third-year students from University of Sunshine Coast will present a research proposal. The students have been asked to investigate customer experience, intention to stay longer, and awareness of other activities or offerings available in Eumundi. The research results will be available in November and will inform the future direction of the Experience Eumundi campaigns.

Nature Notes and Outdoors Elephant Ears Helen Hepburn

S

everal years ago we received some elephant ears (Taro) via one of the many floods that inundates our property during heavy rains. I have to admit I rather like these plants with their huge flamboyant blackish-green leaves. Another thing I like about them is that the larvae of hawk moths feed on these leaves thus providing food further down the food chain in the form of the moths. I wrote about these moths a few months ago. However, I‘ve been watching these plants with some degree of suspicion over the years as a rather large colony has now formed and is spreading exponentially. Recently I was re-reading a brochure published by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council that these elephant ears are now regarded as an invasive weed of our waterways. The brochure also mentions that the leaves and stems are toxic though obviously

not to caterpillars. I’m not sure whether it was the tubers we received in that flood or the seeds, but one thing is clear – we’ll have to remove these plants from our creek area and plant them elsewhere in the garden or destroy them. There are many other native plants we can choose from to replace these plants including sedges, crinum lilies, stream lily, also some of the different lomandras. Another wonderful species of plants for wet creek areas are the gahnias. These are available from specialist native plant nurseries usually as tube stock. Gahnia clarkei in particular is fantastic in that it is the host plant for a very rare butterfly - the varied Sword-Grass Brown. We planted some tubes of this plant many years ago and now have a large thicket in our creek area that now breeds these lovely very dark brown butterflies.

Photo competition to capture wildflowers

udding Sunshine Coast amateur photographers are encouraged to capture the beauty of local native wildflowers on camera as part of the Sunshine Coast Heathland Photographic Competition. Sunshine Coast Council, in partnership with Greening Australia and the Allocasuarina emuina Recovery Team is holding a photo competition to coincide with the release of a DVD about work on Allocasuarina emuina. Allocasuarina emuina is an endangered species found only on the Sunshine Coast with a habitat range from Peregian to Landsborough. The Allocasuarina emuina Recovery Team is working to implement the National Recovery Plan for the Mt Emu Sheoak, Allocasuarina emuina, and increase awareness of this endangered species and the protection of its critical habitat. Dr Alison Shapcott, from the University of the Sunshine Coast, said photographers are encouraged to visit the Sunshine

Coast wildflower reserves to preserve the native plants forever in a photo. “The Sunshine Coast has a wonderful diversity of wildflowers with many rare species,” Dr Shapcott said. “The photo competition is being run in conjunction to the Sunshine Coast Spring Wildflower Festival to provide an opportunity for local amateur photographers to demonstrate their skills. First, second and third prizes as well as a peoples’ choice award will be given in the categories of:  Coastal Heath Landscape  Coastal Heath Wildflowers  Peoples’ Choice Visit the A.emuina youtube site http://www.youtube.com/ mountemusheoak to get a copy of the entry guidelines, entry form and terms and conditions. Photographs will be used in the future promotion of the Sunshine Coast Wildflower Festival. Entries are open until 23 September 2011.

ith the federal government’s announcement of the rollout of the National Broadband Network (NBN), many residents are keen to know when it will reach the Sunshine Coast. It seems how quickly that occurs may be influenced by Council’s own efforts. Council has been driving the establishment of the Broadband Today Alliance, which has more than 112 local governments across Australia advising business, government and the public on what the NBN has to offer. The BBTA is working in collaboration to share ideas and harness potential, including through the establishment of www.broadbandtoday.com.au to maximise the development and usage of the NBN to its full potential. Implementation of the NBN is

O

n 3 September the Australian national flag will be 110 years

old. Following Federation in 1901 the new Commonwealth government held an open competition calling for public input into the design of a flag. Member for Fairfax, Alex Somlyay, said, “Few national flags have been chosen directly by their citizens and even fewer have stood the test of time. Ours has lasted over a century. “The Southern Cross featured on the flag is a constellation that can only be seen in the night skies of the southern hemisphere and it also gives acknowledgement to aboriginal Australians because it is so prominent in their mythology,”

Mr Somlyay said. “I encourage everyone on the Sunshine Coast to fly the Australian national flag on the flag’s ‘birthday’ on September 3 as part of nationwide celebrations. Requests for a flag for community organisations and schools can be made to my office,” Mr Somlyay concluded.

expected to be fully completed by 2020. It will deliver internet speeds of 100Mbps (megabits per second) to 93 per cent of Australian homes and businesses, with the remaining 7 per cent of the population being served by wireless and satellite technologies. Currently most Australians can only access a maximum of ADSL+2 which carries a maximum of 20Mbps. In simple terms, the NBN will provide broadband many times faster than what is available today. NBN Co was created on 9 August 2009 and is a whollyowned Commonwealth company. confronted by many unhealthy meals when we eat out, but we often unwittingly choose unhealthy meals when trying to make a healthy choice. We don’t know how many kilojoules are in a meal, how it has been cooked, what type of oil it has been cooked in or how much salt, saturated fat or fibre is in the meal. Often what may appear healthier is far from being a healthy choice. “Without any nutritional information we do not know what we are eating,” says Mr Prout.

Conversations between two people who were friends or relatives were recorded at Sunny Brae historic home in the Eumundi Showgrounds recently. These have now been edited and form a most interesting new display at Discover Eumundi. Recollections include the impacts of Traveston Crossing dam, memories of an undercover narcotics agent and the creation of the Eumundi conservation park. Long time Eumundi resident Helen Mason contributed a story with her mother Dorothy Skene. In it Helen asks her mother to share some of her family memories, acknowledges how she cherishes her mother and that her mother has lived a life of kindness. Discover Eumundi would like to thank all who participated in this project. The stories collected will become an important part of the centre’s heritage collection – come and see for yourself.

ecently more and more of you are asking how you can get the same email on your computer, laptop, tablet and mobile phone. And not just email – contacts and calendar are important too. And you don’t just want to see the same email – you want full synchronisation so anything you reply to on any device shows up in the Sent Items on all other devices, calendar entries you add on your phone appear in your Outlook at home, contacts you put into Outlook show up instantly on your phone and iPad. I have two favourite ways to accomplish this – Microsoft Office 365, or Google Apps. Note that both of these methods do require you have your own domain name for your email, like for me I have n-techsolutions.com.au and woodcock.com.au. This shouldn’t put you off though as you can have this for under $40 a year. Both Office 365 and Google Apps provide full cloud-stored email, contacts and calendar via

Outlook or a web browser and some Mac mail clients. You can hook up all your devices to either of these services and everywhere you go, no matter what device you are on, you have synchronised access to all your data. Pricing is competitive, particularly compared to the cost of the onsite server hardware you would previously have had to have. Office 365 is $8 per month per email address, and Google Apps is $50 per year per email address. Both support at no extra cost distribution groups and aliases (so you could have john@ myaddress.com.au as well as johnny@myaddress.com.au both going into the same mailbox for the one charge). Businss is moving into this at a fast pace but it’s equally useful for all of us who use personal email etc on multiple devices. Worth a thought. If you have a problem or a question phone or drop an email.

You do a marvellous job as volunteers in looking after this beautiful and historical facility that we are very proud to call our home ground. A very special thanks to Geoff and Heather Green for their on site assistance. We must also thank EDCA and EHA for their sponsorship and start up funding that has underpinned the club financially during our early years. We would like to thank the Noosa Dolphins club for assisting our U 8 boys with game time this year. This is great support from the Rugby community and we are very grateful. The Dolphins also hosted a joint training session between our U 10 teams which was absolutely first class. There are 35 young champions from all over the hinterland running around representing Eumundi because of your support. Thank you.

Managing roadsides across the Sunshine Coast Sunshine Coast Council will soon begin applying local laws across all roads in the region to improve the attractiveness and safety of transport corridors. The change to the way our roadsides are managed is the result of a new agreement between the Department of Transport and Main Roads and Sunshine Coast Council which will allow local laws to be applied on state-controlled roads. If you currently have property, including advertising material, or business being conducted along the roadside these changes may affect you and you are encouraged to remove your property. From Monday, 12 September, council will investigate breaches and attach warning notices to items that are not permitted in the road corridor. If the items are not removed within the timeline identified by council, fines may be issued or the items removed and impounded. Locals Home and Abroad Boab Trees Kon Hepers Kon is one of the two wonderful regular writers of Nature Notes for Eumundi Green. It’s then no surprise that boabs feature centrally in this report on a trip to the Kimberley.

O

n a trip to the Kimberley region we had our first sight of the amazing boab trees. They stood out from the other vegetation with their bottle-like trunks and without leaves actually appeared up-sidedown with the branches looking just like roots. A few kilometres outside Derby stands our best-known specimen, the notorious Prison Boab. Apparently in the late 1800s it was used as an overnight holding cell for Aboriginal prisoners being taken to the jail in Derby. But well before that time it had cultural significance for the local Aborigines. This tree has a circumference of 14m. A similar

tree near Wyndham is estimated to be about 1500 years old. To us, boabs looked very much like the Baobab Trees of Madagascar and Africa we had seen in travel books and on TV. Thanks to Mr Google we found out that they are in fact closely related as members of the genus Adansonia which has six species in Madagascar, one in Africa and the one in Australia. Why we call ours boab and not baobab is not clear but one well known author suggests that Aussies can’t pronounce the full name. Some of the African baobabs are totally incredible, with circumferences of over 40m or so. The French explorer Michel Adanson (after whom the genus is named) guessed they were 5000 years old but 1000 to 1500 years is more like it. Our Australian species is

Adansonia gregoryi, after the WA surveyor/explorer Augustus Gregory who, like everyone else, found the huge trunk of a boab useful for carving the date of his passing by in 1856. Like the African and Madagascan baobabs, our boabs were fully utilised by the Indigenous people as a source of water, food, medicine, shelter and utensils and they wore the carved fruit shells as ornaments. Along the coast we found beautiful specimens growing on islands and headlands which were more rock than soil. At Careening Bay is the famous “Mermaid Boab”. Carved on its double trunk is the legend: H.M.C. Mermaid 1820. In that year while surveying the Kimberley Coast, Captain Philip Parker King was forced to careen and repair His Majesty’s cutter Mermaid at that spot. Thanks to this early graffiti and his meticulous

measuring and recording, the growth rate of boabs in that area can be estimated. Boabs are not only picturesque and useful but have won a place in our history.
