Noosa - sunny and fine, 23°C Melbourne - cloudy and showers, 13°C Sydney - cloudy and windy, 17°C Sydney and Melbourne media outlets are now reporting improved sales volumes, auction clearance rates and prices being achieved well over ‘reserve’ price – it looks like the recovery is starting in the southern markets. This augers well for the Noosa region as most of our buyers originate from down south. This time of the year, many buyers have had all they can stand of ‘another winter’ and embrace the concept of sunbelt migration and look to call Noosa home. Stock levels in our region are tight and this should see a firming in prices as we enter the spring selling season. Take advantage of these fantastic selling conditions and call either Kess or Graham.

Notes Editor’s note ... I think Kermit the Frog had it wrong when he sang, “It’s not easy being Green!” Leave our pocket of lush hinterland and drive into the countryside and you see a very different landscape. We are very lucky to look out windows at our views of rolling green hills and dams with water, when most Queenslanders have a view of dry, brown fields. When many farmers are struggling to green up a field to feed cattle or grow produce, it makes me think we should all be growing our own fruit and veg – and become beekeepers… Our busy community has recently been celebrating multicultural diversity and many creative endeavors, with more to come, over the next fortnight. With the days warming up but the nights still crisp enough for slippers, it’s a beautiful time of year to enjoy where we live and who we are – hinterlanders.

Business TOP OF TOWN APPROVED

A roundabout at this intersection has been in Council’s pipeline since approximately 2004. When we developed the Eumundi Square in 2005 we gave Council a monetary contribution for the roundabout as they told us they were about to build it and the

Eumundi State School has been waiting for this roundabout for years. We expect to contribute again, but an amount that is fair and reasonable as the feasibility of the project is at stake if we can’t reach agreement with Council.

We are very excited about the support for the project from Council and from the community, we want to re-enliven this town, bring back essential goods and services within a creative and environmentally conscious retail hub, as well as accommodate much needed space for meetings, offices and health and wellbeing related services. The next step for the development is to assess the conditions package and engage with Council regarding contributions to the proposed roundabout at the Caplick Wy/Cook St intersection.

After the Formosa family lodged their development application in December 2016, on Thursday 22 August, Council unanimously approved the Our Village proposal. Harper Whyatt, Year 5, ESS Ignite English Have you ever dreamed of becoming a chef in a fancy restaurant? That is exactly what Oliver (Ollie) Carruthers does for a living. He is the head chef at Café Le Monde, and also oversees the pizza shop El Capitano, Coconut Head and Tanglewood Bakery on Hastings St. Inspiration to become a chef came from Ollie’s yearly trips to France, trying all kinds of exquisite food. As soon as he entered the kitchen, he knew it was for him. Ollie is a keen, kind, enthusiastic, easy-going and exceptional cook. But as a chef there have been many challenges; Ollie once had a whole restaurant arrive at the same time, the power going off and having to cook in the dark, the fridge breaking down so having to cook everything from scratch. “Every day is different, and you never know what it will throw at you,” added Ollie. After growing up in London and doing his training there, Ollie decided to move to Sydney, where he was fortunate enough to work in some great restaurants, including; the Opera House and Quay restaurant. Imagine working there! He came to the Eumundi area on a holiday and fell in love with it. Beautiful bushland, close

to the ocean and the genuine people he met who shared their love for the area, was all the convincing that Ollie needed. He now lives in Doonan with his wife and children. In his spare time, Ollie enjoys starting his day with surfing or trail running. “One of the best things about working on Hastings St is that you are right next to the national park,” he said. Ollie also likes to cook at home on hot coals in his backyard with his friends. Ollie has started a vegetable garden and grows fresh produce which saves them from frequent shopping trips. When questioning Ollie if there were any other jobs he did before becoming a chef, he answered, “Well, once I was an astronaut but then I realised I was afraid of heights - just kidding!”

It was very pleasing to see the Development Permit for Material Change of Use and Preliminary Approval for the proposed development of the old Butterfactory site strongly supported by my fellow councillors at the recent Ordinary Meeting of Council.

that has been proposed by Council for the best part of a decade, and firmly believe that a financial cost sharing arrangement of this extremely important road infrastructure is long overdue and would be welcomed by both the general community and the Developer.

The proposal put forward by the Formosa Family, I believe will sit well with the present character and amenity afforded by the Eumundi Township. In Stage 1 of the Development Approval, the Old Highway Motors Garage and existing residences will be retained and enhanced and the Heritage Rail Corridor will also take on a massive face lift, but most importantly it will add to the connectivity of the proposed new development to Dick Caplick Park and the centre CBD of Eumundi.

Strong community Thais

There is still one major hurdle to be overcome, that being a Conversion Application to be assessed by Council for a roundabout at the Cook St, Napier Rd and Caplick Way Intersection, that has been mooted as part of the Development.

I was very honoured to be invited to speak at the very first Thai Community of Sunshine Coast Association meeting at the Eumundi School of Art on Sunday 25 August. This event was also attended by Andrew Park, Honorary Consul General Royal Thai Consulate – General, Brisbane. One of the long term aims of the Thai Community of Sunshine Coast Association is to construct a Thai Buddhist Temple on the Sunshine Coast. I’m fully supportive of this and council officers are now providing planning advice for appropriate locations. I’d like to congratulate Chamnan Pranit who is the President of the Thai Community of Sunshine Coast Association, and the Board for putting on a great event and I wish everybody associated with this new organisation the very best for the future.

Community C WA C R A F T D AY Tuesday morning craft sessions in the CWA Hall are gaining momentum as more ladies join in bringing new skills and interests. Last week a lady from Sydney popped in bringing some of her own work. Sue Kerr. from the NSW Smocking Art Guild, showed us some exquisite tiny garments that she and her group make for premature and still born babies. Five hundred outfits are distributed to Neo Natal Units across the Sydney Basin to give some comfort to the mothers and families, allowing them to take the baby home in something nice - that cannot be easily bought. The Eumundi Branch members were not only impressed by the

Janet Millington, Eumundi QCWA workmanship in the garments, but even more by the kindness and generosity of the women helping other women; which is what the CWA is all about. There are volunteer groups on the Sunshine Coast who make tiny garments and distribute them to hospitals. If there are any local ladies who are looking to use their skills to give comfort to mothers, the Eumundi Branch would be happy to support them and connect with ladies already involved. All ladies are welcome to join in craft activities on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, at 9.30am and on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 7pm.

program offered to local kids. Volunteer photographer Ben Lockens shared there was lots of glitter, rock star posing and very excited kids. “The kid’s energy was infectious and there was a buzz and excitement in the room until the last chords were struck - the night was amazing,” Ben shared. After months of hard work practicing from both the students and teachers, the kids performed solid renditions of some great Aussie classics. Katie Noonan also performed along with local band Mufassa.

THE SAINT OF LOST CAUSES Alice Jones, Eumundi Listening to Justin Townes Earle’s new album The Saint Of Lost Causes feels at first a bit like stepping back in to my parents’ lounge room a few decades ago; the record player turns and the sound of Folk/Country/Americana of the 70’s breathes out through the house. Townes Earle’s sound is instantly familiar, but utterly revealing, honest and unique. Musically, this album has a little bit of all the above (Folk/ Country/Americana), as well as a good dash of Mississippi Delta Blues and Soul. It is made up of sounds I have heard before, but his distinctive and haunting voice, his heartbreaking lyrics and the nuanced grunts and hums Townes Earle emits between lines, make it altogether entirely new and the sound… like no one else’s. The son of Steve Earl, and named after his godfather Townes Van Zandt, Justin Townes Earle had big shoes to fill and is no stranger to life on the road. But he has had more than his share of hard knocks and this album weaves through that journey. From the desolate laments in the title track; “Some will say I’ve got no feeling No heart, and surely no shame Truth is that this has been with me so long That I, I must admit I kinda like the pain.” …to the rollicking rhythm of Don’t Drink the Water and the Delta Blues in Say Baby, this album shows the breadth of his song writing ability and musicality, and the sadness he draws on is relatable and bonafide. Beautifully written songs, unselfish and brutal, I have a feeling The Saint Of Lost Causes will be heard playing in my lounge room for decades to come.

FORMIDABLE SINGER SONGWRITER JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE IS RETURNING FOR HIS BIGGEST TOUR DOWN UNDER YET PLAYING 16 DATES ACROSS NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA. Health EXERCISE TYPES

Brooke Conlan, Eumundi Personal Trainer

Have you noticed and wondered how different sports require different body types and abilities to perform the activity? What type of training do you need to engage in to perform a sport successfully? So, for example, comparing an AFL footballer to a NRL player. Firstly, an AFL footballer can run up to 17km in distance in one game at a speed of 9-10km/hour, whereas an NRL player performs short explosive bursts at speed and could run half that distance as a half back in a game - but at greater speeds. These players therefore have to train according to the needs of the sport to achieve the best performance. In the case of AFL Vs NRL, or a marathon runner Vs a sprinter, it would be endurance training versus anaerobic training. These forms of training determine the body types of the athletes. So what exercises shape a person differently or help them perform differently? Strength training The amount of reps and weight lifted during strength and resistance training will determine the outcome for a person’s performance and body type. Endurance training Requires lighter weights and higher reps as this conditions the body by building lean muscle but not bulking in order to be able to carry their body weight for long periods or distances. If you were training for long distance events like running or cycling you would tend to have less muscle bulk

and appear to have a lean but defined appearance. A sprinter, power lifter, high jumper would have greater lean muscle mass as greater force is required for their activity. Anaerobic training Is short intense bursts of power, requires the person training for such anaerobic activities to use heavier weights with less reps or explosive movements. This recruits fast twitch muscle fibres to do the job and generally gives a person a muscly and bulkier appearance due to the sheer muscle required to perform under great force. If you perform

anaerobic based exercises like HIIT, sprinting, powerlifting, jumping you may tend to have a more muscle bound appearance depending on level of intensity. If you do more endurance and cardio based activities like running, swimming and cycling you may tend to have a leaner body type simply because you are training the muscles differently and using energy at a more consistent rate. What about Cross Training? Many people engage in a combination of these exercises or train in more than one roll or skill - otherwise known as

An exercise professional can help you determine what type of training regime you need to condition your body to the demands of your sport. 0408 077 699

S W I M C L U B O P E N D AY Sarah Hillhouse, Eerwah Vale Eumundi District Swim Club is a friendly, informal gathering of kids (aged four to 18) and parents who meet every Thursday from October to March, 6 - 7pm, with swimming games and races that improve confidence and skills in the water while having fun. For those wishing to compete, the club also provides professional coaching and support for regional meets.

Cross Training. This requires a happy medium of muscle endurance and bursts of power when needed. This method of training is useful in the cases where you may be a middledistance runner (so want to combine speed and endurance for optimal performance) or a cyclist who wants to be able to navigate hills yet maintain endurance in a race.

We want to know about you, not just your teeth.

It’s a great place to gather with a bunch of friendly parents, poolside. But without a doubt the best thing about club nights is that after a night of fun in the pool, the kids also leave showered, fed and ready for bed.

Eumundi Dental is a family friendly, locally owned and operated practice. Our goal is to create a friendly, relaxed, anxiety free dental environment so patients feel comfortable coming to see us.

Come along to the annual Open Day and sign up on Saturday 14 Sept, 12 - 2pm. The day will include free pool entry and sausage sizzle. All welcome. 5442 7186.

Eat In this chilly weather we all like a nice chicken or vegetable curry, or a plate of hot lemon rice and sliced avocado - both of which are in season. It’s the perfect time to get stuck into both of them. My husband Allan and I used to run the Railway Refreshments Café at the Eumundi Markets situated in the old railway building. On Wednesdays, Allan would make curries and always had this popular Lemon Rice on the menu. We would also sometimes use cauliflower as a substitute for rice - which is also currently in season. It’s a healthy low GI, low calorie alternative and a tasty variation. I grate two cups of cauliflower to replace the rice. Ingredients • 225 g Basmati rice or if making the alternative – 2 cups grated cauliflower • 2 tblsp vegetable oil • ½ tsp brown or black mustard seeds • 10-12 curry leaves with or without the stem • 30 g cashew nuts • ¼ tsp ground turmeric

Stir in turmeric, quickly followed by rice and salt, cook stirring for 1 min then add boiling water and lemon juice. Stir once and bring to the boil for 2 mins. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and reduce heat to very low. Cook for 8 mins. Turn off the heat and let stand for 6 – 7 mins.

• 450 ml boiling water

Fork through rice, gently fluffing and transfer to a serving dish. Garnish with chopped chives.

• 2 tblsp lemon juice

Notes:

• 1 tblsp fresh chives

If making the cauliflower alternative – when cooking, use only 2 tblsp of water and only cook for a few minutes or until heated through but still firm. Cauliflower makes a healthy very low calorie version of this dish and is suitable for diabetics, vegans and vegetarians.

• 1 tsp salt or to taste

Method

Lemon cauliflower or basmati rice

heat. When hot, but not smoking, add mustard seeds, then curry leaves and cashews. Keep moving and don’t burn the ingredients.

Wash rice in several changes of cold water until water runs clear. Leave to soak in fresh water for 20mins then drain. Heat oil in a non- stick pan over medium

B E A U T I F U L B O TA N I C B A C K YA R D Isaac Carter, Year 4, ESS Ignite English Walking through the stunning gardens, I never realised nature was this beautiful! As we ventured along the path, we passed a goliath Greek styled amphitheatre. The large stage was surrounded by colossal pillars that seem to reach for the stars. I pretended I was an actor in front of an audience. We exited the large stage and continued onto the path. I was totally absorbed by plant and animal life that surrounded me, until I heard my mum call, “SNAKE!”

The students of Noosa Pengari Steiner School (NPSS) in Doonan have been developing a living bee ecosystem over the last three years. Starting with the introduction Australian native stingless (Tetragonula carbonaria) beehives around the school as part of the gardening program, and later with a sculptured art installation by local artists. Many flowering plants and edible foods are grown annually to provide nectar and pollen for the bees in return for a great pollination rate resulting in beautiful biodynamically raised produce to use in our school kitchen.

As I turned around I spied a largish, red-belly black snake. I almost walked straight over it! As I tried to take a photo it slithered off into the dense undergrowth. I was curious to know why it was out in the winter. Mum said it was probably because it was such a beaming, sunny day and it was basking in the warm sunlight. Sarah in Steiner’s garden. This then developed into a joint project between woodwork students creating native bee hotels and the primary students creating homes for the native solitary bees every year.

Venturing further, we discovered a large pond. We stopped to admire it and waited quietly to see if there was any movement

in the water. I swear I saw something lurking under the surface of the lily covered pond, but when I looked closer it was a cute turtle. It’s long neck poked out of the water. It was so curious, looking at us like we were aliens, however, I thought it was alien-like with its long, slender neck. Strolling on through wonderful gardens we saw an old wooden structure. A worker in the garden informed us it was an old aviary, but it is now a greenhouse. I was distracted from the greenhouse when I saw another snake on the path. It appeared to be a tree snake slithering into the bushes. Luckily, we could still see it because it was a small bush. Something told me we were annoying it, so we Cont’d on pg 18

But Jang cautioned that her experience was not the norm for many Sunshine Coast immigrants. She explained that many of the women who come to work at her restaurant haven’t felt as welcome. Bringing them to Eumundi and to her restaurant has helped with culture shock. “I see my restaurant and Eumundi people really help them find their feet,” she shared.

as part of an elective subject. With 20 European honeybee hives located at the school, children participate in the bee husbandry required to naturally look after bees and in return sell their honey in their own microbusiness to the school parents. The students create frames, take part in managing the hives, harvest, bottle, develop a logo and manage the business. They also gain a deep appreciation for the humble life of the honey bee and what is required to ensure bee health and sustainability in the future.

Jang explained that her life in Thailand was very different and the biggest hurdle, along with language, was the culture of eating. Jang said she was lucky she had her husband John to teach her about Australian customs like using spoons and drinking tea – both sound like a normal part of life on the Coast but both are alien social customs in Thailand. “When people move away from home the first thing they miss is the food,” Jang explained. “You have to find somewhere that you can eat – imagine – you eat toast in the morning – you move to Thailand and you have to eat rice – that makes you sad,” she said. “But when you know and understand the culture and customs you won’t get offended and you can fit in,” Jang said. “This Multicultural Hub means I [can] share my experience of what I’ve been through with others – there’s a lot to learn and I can make it a little bit easier,” Jang enthused. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/Living-and-Community/CommunitySupport/Multicultural-Welcome-Hub

Cont’d from pg 16 decided to leave it alone. Next we saw ducks. There were three, sleeping under a table in a position that looked uncomfortable, but obviously it was not uncomfortable for them judging by the deep sleep they were in. Leaving the ducks to their peaceful slumber, we continued along the path that led us back to the carpark of the Noosa Botanical Gardens at Lake McDonald, Cooroy.

By developing a love of bees, natural bee keeping and the importance of pollination, NPSS is empowering the youth of today to be our next generation of sustainable beekeepers and bee protectors.
