Notes Editor’s note ... It’s been another busy fortnight in the hinterland with winter solstice celebrations, hillbilly music, and numerous events and exhibition openings making it hard to stay home. HELPFUL HINTS A STORY OF RESILIENCE
Jenny Brice, Executive Coach, Eumundi One of the buzz words on everyone’s lips these days is how important it is to be resilient, particularly with the expected technological changes which is anticipated to impact the workforce in various forms. Organisations are spending mega bucks on training people to be resilient. Such courses may be valuable in raising awareness however my belief is you only really discover how resilient you are when faced with real adversity. However, other people’s stories of overcoming adversity can provide us with inspiration and enable us to put our own lives and opportunities into perspective. This is one such story. Recently I visited Detroit, a US city which had historically been dependent on one industry, the mass production of autos. In recent times the city has been economically and emotionally smashed by loss of jobs in that industry. A city of 1.85 million people in 1950 to just over 700,000 in 2013. As I entered the city by train, I was shocked to see the consequence of the loss of an industry and jobs. Crumbling buildings were everywhere. Absolute poverty was around every corner. It was gut wrenching and sobering. In the afternoon while I was exploring the city centre, which had signs of economic
recovery, I asked a clean shaven African American man in his forties, with a slight limp, for directions. I was interested to learn more about Detroit and started a conversation. I asked him what he did in Detroit and he told me he was homeless. He had got out of jail 19 days ago. He told me he had gone to jail because he sought revenge on someone who had tried to shoot him for reasons he did not explain. He had caused serious injuries to that individual. This gently spoken man with thoughtful eyes said he had done the wrong thing and he was now a better man. He had just got a job as a cook being paid $13 an hour and he was exceptionally grateful. He said just because he was homeless it did not mean he had to give up hope. As we said farewell, he offered out his hand and as we shook goodbye I felt totally in awe of his attitude to life. Yet I found myself with a knot in my stomach wondering how anyone could survive? on $13 an hour. Anytime I think my life is tough I will remember the resilience of this man on the streets of Detroit and how his city and his fellow citizens have endured the consequences of mass unemployment. jennybrice.com.au

Positive progress on Seib Rd pedestrian access After 18 long months of lobbying both Council and TMR, we are finally moving towards a positive outcome in the long running saga of pedestrian access over the North Maroochy River at Seib Rd. Although pedestrian access and community connectivity is a Council responsibility, Council has now agreed to fund 50% of a new pedestrian access and have allocated $25,000 in the current budget for its design, and a further $250,000 for the construction in a joint venture with TMR.
Now that Council has made a firm commitment to the project, I can now progress the issue with TMR, and I have already written to the Transport and Main Roads Minister to continue to plead the case for this vital piece of local infrastructure. For more than 20 years locals have been asking for a safer alternative to the current access over the river on Seib Road, and I made it one of my election commitments. There’s no doubt it’s been a long road, but I am confident that we will get this project across the line. Eumundi State School seven million windfall While there wasn’t a lot to smile about in the recent
State Budget, one of the local highlights was the announcement of seven million for a new undercover area and classrooms for Eumundi State School. Thanks must go to Mick Connors and the school community for all their hard work in lobbying for the funding, which was another one of my election commitments. Overall, the Budget was as disappointing as it was alarming, with the State’s debt bill estimated to hit 90 billion. The 3.5 billion interest bill alone could fund many new roads and bridges, not to mention more nurses, teachers and police. Sadly, the Budget has failed to deliver any reprieve to cost of living expenses such as car registration, and there’s still no real plan to reduce hospital waiting times and improve access to health services here on the Coast. One of our most critical needs, local road infrastructure, continues to be underfunded, while more and more of our taxpayer dollars are funnelled into big ticket projects in the south east corner, like the 5.4 billion Cross River Rail.
Each year, for nearly 20 years, Eumundi State School (ESS) students have studied a country nominated by the Association of Country Women of the World (ACWW). This year the country chosen was Lithuania. The children participated in statewide competitions, learnt songs and dances and made costumes, while older students completed assignments. Eumundi usually has the largest number of entries and has won in one or more of the five categories at State level on many occasions.

Community 4 5 6 2 B U D G E T A L L O C AT I O N Last week Sunshine Coast Council endorsed an $864 million budget for 2018-19. Mayor Mark Jamieson said this year’s budget built on council’s plan for the region and, “demonstrated a continuing commitment to preserving and enhancing the natural environment, supporting and servicing the community and building an economy that can provide jobs and opportunities now and into the future.” This year’s budget includes; $150,000 towards Eumundi Town Centre Placemaking Project and $20,000 to design and construct pedestrian and cyclist bridge for recreational trail use at EumundiNoosa Rd. Div. 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson explained the Town Centre Placemaking money would allow council to, “assess the current issues the town is facing via a Place Health Audit and community engagement process.” The big winner in Div. 10 was Nambour with; $1.48 million pedestrian pathway extension on Nambour Connection Rd, $763,000 commitment to progress the Nambour Heritage Tramway Project, $47,457 towards the design and construction of a new

off leash dog area, $90,000 for the Nambour Aquatic Centre carpark, and $43,937 towards tidying the skate park. Cr Rogerson said, “I’m very pleased to see a strong allocation of additional funding towards the Nambour Heritage Tramway Project, which is a key component of the Nambour Activation Plan.”
Noosa Pengari Steiner School in Doonan celebrated the shortest night of the year with its annual primary and high school Winter Solstice festival last Thursday evening. Principal Francis Klugman shared that all of the children had been preparing for the event and partaking in the various evening’s activities, connected the students to the natural cycles of the earth. The magical evening included music and singing, a spiral walk, fire performance and 100 lanterns to mark 100 years of Steiner schools.

Park Sounds is a community event organised by the music loving Imperial Hotel who want to inject the village with more music. Arts ART REFLECTION Eumundi artist Michael ‘Civa’ Ciavarella’s latest exhibition invites you to reflect on a world of silence. Built from windows and mirrors and blackened to create a dark cell that blocks out any external environment, the Reflection Room installation imposes time to reflect. Q: What was your inspiration? I am influenced by the artwork around me at home and by artists such as Sean Scully and Agnes Martin. I have always been drawn to commercial art, paintings on walls and the simpler, more minimal it is the more I am attracted to it. My concepts are basic, that’s the point! Not over-stimulating, minimal work enables me to also be relaxed and present painting. The ‘slow movement’
of slowing down is a priority for me and what this exhibition ‘Unsubscribe’ is all about. Q: Where do you paint? I paint in my home studio in Eumundi with other friend’s artwork around me. Q: You’re a ceramic artist so why painting for your latest exhibition? I find painting more of a challenge than ceramics. Clay
comes naturally to me so to pick up a paint brush and still be satisfied with the work, especially minimal work, is highly rewarding for me now. Q: Why Eumundi for your latest exhibition? Eumundi is my hometown and a perfect place to exhibit my new work, as it is a new beginning for me with these paintings. I wanted to show the local community, friends and family what I do.

My recent focus on non- fiction, especially the memoir, has led to some fascinating places this year. I don’t usually re-read new books, but I just did so with Educated by Tara Westover. The first time, the intensity of her remarkable story just propelled me along. This second reading, a year later, allowed the multiple layers and meanings of this story to emerge alongside the ongoing and public saga of her relationship with her family and her new life. Writing such a memoir, involving an entire family, revealing such uncomfortable truths, is not without personal consequences. Educated is the story of Westover’s life as the child of fundamentalist Mormon survivalists in a remote area of Idaho. It meticulously details her extraordinary life and final escape from her abusive family situation and her journey to become an outstanding scholar at Cambridge University, gaining a PhD. Much has been said about the fact that at age 17 she had never been in a classroom, had no birth certificate and had never received medical treatment for some serious injuries, but more than that, she was virtually self-taught, buying her own books with money earned at a very early age working in her father’s junk yard

along with her siblings. This is not the usual story of benevolent home schooling, but rather life with a dominating father with a serious mental illness, extreme political and religious views and an abusive older brother. Paradoxically, some of the physical and mental independence she gained in this perilous situation became an asset in her approach to education and life. She was both a blank slate and a thirsty sponge, receiving education as a gift. She has said, “Ï worry that education is becoming a stick that some people use to beat other people into submission or becoming something that
people feel arrogant about … I think education is really just a process of self-discovery—of developing a sense of self and what you think. I think of [it] as this great mechanism of connecting and equalizing”. Hence the title of the book, combining the personal with the universal. Westover names Joan Didion’s memoir, The Year of Magical Thinking, as an inspiration for hers. It’s a favourite of mine as well. If you are interested in memoirs, here are a few others I can recommend: this year’s Stella prize winner The Erratics by Vicki Laveau-Harvie; Hilary Mantel’s Giving up the ghost;
Jeanette Winterson’s Oranges are not the only Fruit and Why be Happy When you could be Normal? The Liars Club and Lit by Mary Karr, Eggshell Skull by Bri Lee and Stephen King’s On Writing: a memoir of the Craft.

The five sessions run by QRU Sunshine Coast development coaches for the U6’s and U7’s and the two sessions for the U8’s + U10’s, cost $60 per child, which the club covered the cost of for its 38 players. The U6’s and U7’s have been participating in fun games on Thursday afternoons aimed at improving their general skills of ball passing, catching and teamwork. On the other hand the U8’s and U10’s, on Friday
afternoons, have been focusing on safe and effective tackling. The benefits of these programs have been clearly seen at our recent Saturday morning matches. As the players’ skills improve so does their enjoyment of the game. So far this season the Dragons had three development rounds leading up to Easter and have now played eight rounds of the 16 week season. Defecation is the final action of digestion by which we expel faeces via the anus. For some of us even reading this sentence will prompt a response of revulsion. Considering this bodily function is something that all of us do on a regular basis, it is fascinating that it is often considered a taboo topic in certain generational and cultural groups. However, a recent survey found that four in five Australians now think it’s more socially acceptable than ever before to discuss our toileting habits. The Poop Culture report also showed that: • Australians are most comfortable talking about their poo to their significant other (56%), their family (49%) and their friends (37%). • One in 10 discuss it with work colleagues. • Half a million Aussies say they would talk poop on a first date. • Eight out of 10 Aussies are also happy to drop some details about their bowel movements. The topics most people discussed were being constipated or having diarrhoea (52%), discussing concerns about their toilet trips (48%) and letting people know they need a poo (43%). • Men (45%) are more likely than women (35%) to say they are very comfortable talking about their bathroom habits/ poo. • Six out of 10 Australians do not get enough fibre in their daily diet. Bowel health is extremely important and being able to discuss these topics with our peers, family and with health professionals is vital in preventing one of the second most deadliest cancers in Australia, bowel cancer. Over 103 people die from bowel cancer each week. The risk of developing bowel cancer rises sharply and progressively from age 50, but the number of Australians under age 50 diagnosed with bowel cancer has been increasingly steadily. Most bowel cancers start as
non-threatening growths called polyps which are located on the wall or lining of the bowel. Polyps are usually harmless, however adenomatous polyps can become cancerous and if left undetected can develop into a cancerous tumour. During the early stages of bowel cancer, patients may have no symptoms, which is why screening is so important. Minor changes in bowel movements, with or without rectal bleeding are also seen, but they are often ignored or attributed to haemorrhoids. As a cancerous tumour grows, it can narrow and block the bowel, and may cause constipation alternating with diarrhoea, abdominal pain and obstructive symptoms, such as nausea and vomiting.

• Blood in the stool or rectal bleeding • A recent, persistent change in bowel habit, especially if severe (including diarrhoea, constipation or the feeling of incomplete emptying) • A change in the shape or appearance of bowel movements (e.g., more narrow than usual) • Abdominal pain or swelling • Pain or a lump in the anus or rectum • Unexplained anaemia • A feeling that the bowel has not emptied completely after a bowel movement Bowel cancer screening is safe and easy and can be done at home. It is medically recommended that people aged 50 and over who do not have a family or personal history of bowel cancer, or an inherited gene mutation, should screen using a Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) every 1 to 2 years. Screening involves placing small samples of toilet water or stool on a special card provided as part of a faecal immunochemical test (FIT). The kit includes a postage paid envelope, in which the samples are mailed to a pathology laboratory. Following analysis, the results are sent to the individual and their GP. 15

Over the past several months there has been a distinct increase in whistling around my neighbourhood. It was evident that birds were the cause but, where were they? Which trees were they hiding in? Were they as tiny as their distinctive high-pitched whistling calls suggested? Who were they?
Soak oats in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes and serve. A great breakfast treat. Scrambled Eggs Yes, chickens love to eat eggs. This is a good protein source so feed before bedtime. Corn and Peas With the cooler nights and mornings setting in, your chooks might appreciate some warming treats before bedtime and for breakfast. Increasing the temperature of foods can help to raise body temperature, but also feeding more protein can have the same affect. Their bodies generate more heat when they metabolise protein. This means a protein boost before bedtime can help them stay warmer during the night. Here are some ideas that are cheap and easy, as well as nutritious, for your chickens. Remember though, commercial layer feeds are designed to have the correct balance of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. It is important that chickens have the correct ratios to stay in optimum health. This means that any additions to their diet are considered treats, so treats should not make up

You can scatter them around so that they have to be more active and your chooks will generate more body heat on cold mornings.
