Since the election, consumer sentiment about whether it is time to buy has been trending upwards. Open home attendance has returned to “pre-election numbers� and Hinternoosa sales are increasing by the week. The CBA announced the number of home loan applications received in the week following the federal election hit a six-month high. The Reserve Bank has just announced that it will reduce the cash rate to 1.25% which is the first rate move by the RBA since August 2016. The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) has flagged lowering the minimum interest rate serviceability buffer from 7 per cent to a level determined by banks and other lenders. With these proposed changes and the uncertainty of the election behind us, this will potentially provide additional positives for the housing market. This issue’s cover photo is thanks to regular Green contributor and horticulturist Adam Woodhams. This photo, taken at Lake Weyba, won the Mystical Trees category of the Excellence in Horticultural Photography Awards at the Horticultural Media Assoc. of Australia dinner. “At the end of our street is a beautiful tidal lake, Lake Weyba, that feeds into the Noosa river. On the shore is an ancient paperbark (Melaleuca quinquenervia) the locals call ‘the sentinel tree’. It has stood watch over the lake for generations. Its age is impossible to judge as its highly exposed position has stunted its growth but it’s quite likely it was a sapling when the Gubbi Gubbi people still built their fish traps, cast their nets and paddled their bark canoes on their lake. I took this shot just after sunrise. Through cyclones and drought, king tides and floods it has survived and even resurrected itself, as witnessed by the near horizontal former trunk. It is now succumbing to age and erosion and, its greatest threat, climate change, is slowly building, yet it is still somehow majestic.”

Community WEARABLE ARTS WINNERS ANNOUNCED Eumundi Square and curator Wendy Roe successfully hosted the Australian Wearable Art Festival with over 40 wearable works taking to the 16 metre stage in front judges; Jandamarra Cadd - award winning hinterland artist, lecturer and designer Peter Dwyer of the Whitehouse Design Institute, and fashion designer to Lady Gaga, Cindy Vogels. Sunshine Coast Council supports the not-forprofit, social enterprise cafe in their day-to-day operations as part of its 2018 Community Partnerships Program, with $7,500 per year for three years being contributed to additional project coordination to support the development of the organisation. It was terrific to attend the recent Australian Wearable Art Festival in Eumundi. This incredibly colourful event was inspired by the highly successful Wearable Art competition that was held last year as part of the Horizon Festival. The Wearable Art Festival featured acclaimed fashion designers and some truly amazing fashion parades which really had to be seen to be believed! I’d like to send a huge congratulations and thankyou to event curator Wendy Roe and her small band organising committee for putting on this outstanding event. I’m sure I speak for many when I say that I’d love to see the Australian Wearable Art Festival become a fixture in Eumundi. Its cultural and artistic expressions are a perfect fit for the artisan town! I’m currently looking into feasibilities and costings
for a ‘whispering wall’ to be constructed within the amphitheatre viewing area. What on earth is a whispering wall you ask? Well, it’s an amazing acoustic phenomenon that enables sound, even whispers, to be heard long distances apart along a curved wall. A google search on the whispering wall at Kings Park in Perth will tell you all you need to know about what a major point of interest they are – with that particular one, which was built as the State War Memorial, drawing thousands of reviews and comments on TripAdvisor Australia. I think a whispering wall at the Eumundi Amphitheatre would create another point of interest for tourists to the town and would certainly enhance the practicality and atmosphere for performances held at the amphitheatre. Watch this space! Queensland Rail is currently upgrading and modernising the platform at Eumundi station as part of a $4million project to upgrade platforms at three Sunshine Coast stations. These works are expected to continue through until December and if you have any concerns or queries please contact Queensland Rail on 131617.
14 year-old Mitchell Warren is a local swimmer who competed in five separate events at the recent National Age Swim Titles. Under the guidance of trainer Adrian Williams, he trains with the Eumundi Swim Squad, - mornings and evenings every day. Mitchell said that participating at the National Age Titles was a great professional experience for him and has reinforced his commitment and dedication to fulfil his swimming dreams. Mitchell achieved three personal best times in his events. A great result especially considering the extraordinary level of competition. The Eumundi Historical Association (EHA) was pleased to sponsor
Mitchell by paying his Adelaide airfare to the event. Mitchell attended Eumundi Kindergarten, then Eumundi State School and is now in Year 9 at Noosa District State High School.
GOODBYE THURBONS Lousise Formosa, Experience Eumundi Chair Last week Experience Eumundi said bon voyage to Richard Thurbon who has worked with the team for several years as the wonderful carpark and RV stopover manager. Richard and his partner Michelle have recently relocated far south of the border, but they have promised to visit as much as possible. Working with Richard was always a pleasure and his love for our community, his generosity, his ‘fair bloke’ nature, as well as the pride in his job, means he was always a commendable worker. We wish Richard and Michelle all the best for the next chapter in their lives and hopefully it’s too cold where they’ve gone and they’ll be back by summer! On behalf of the community, I know they will both be greatly missed but I’m sure our hinterland town, and their connections with family and friends here will never leave their hearts. All the best guys.

The rise of the hippie commune in the 70’s swept across the world as a reaction to a structured, regimented, consumer lifestyle. But many of those communities wore out under the weight of poorly designed infrastructures or volatile personalities. But some groups got it right and endured - they even thrived. These communes have now developed more into ecovillages – suburbs ‘off the grid’. The concept of living an alternative, sustainable ‘eco’ life has become more mainstream. This type of conscious living – be it in eating organic foods, wearing fair trade clothing, growing your own food, recycling, moving onto land and away from cities, has become a highly desirable way to live and raise healthy, happy children. People are craving, searching, for a way of living that provides a sense of community and place. Living as part of a community on a common parcel of land also offers many the opportunity to attain an ecolifestyle
that would otherwise not be affordable for them. Founded 55 years ago, the most famous and successful ecovillage on a global scale is Findhorn in Scotland. This flourishing community works
with the Scottish Government to nurture a locally owned, consciously designed, sustainable model that is then used as an example to other ecovillages and governments worldwide. The Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) is

Arts TINBEERWAH EXHIBITION TURNS 25 Twenty-five years ago when Gwen Blair couldn’t find an art group to join in Noosa she started her own. Group coordinator Jan Cooke said The Tinbeerwah Art Group has grown from a few friends meeting on a Thursday morning, to a membership of over 50 local artists who paint in two groups on Thursday and Friday mornings. “Many of our members are seniors. It is amazing how many who join our group had either never painted since childhood or had forgotten how much they enjoyed painting,” Jan shared. The artists use a variety of mediums including; acrylics, watercolours, oils, pastels, charcoal and pencil, collage and mixed media. their skills,” Jan said. Busy Chicks In the QCWA Hall at 7pm on Tuesday the 25th June. The meeting is informal and there is no need to be a member. Come along to learn, do and share. THIS MONTH WE WILL BE MAKING: Hand rolled bees wax candles, baking bread (ready bake and taste and make from scratch), making lemon butter, preserving the plentiful lemons this season and learning a new fabric applique known as boro stitch. We are also doing a crochet blanket together, as a way to learn how to crochet.
PENGARI PRESS FIRST BOOK LAUNCH After months of writing and editing, the students at Noosa Pengari Steiner School in Doonan (NPSS) launched their first publication from their newly formed publishing house, Pengari Press. Lost and Found: A Collection of Short Stories is a compilation written entirely by teenagers for teenagers. Contributing author Aliya Klugman Harris shared, “Each short story contains its own unique sense of adventure and characters.” English teacher Nicholas Stagg explained Pengari Press is part of a NPSS elective subject. “The students learn all aspects of writing, publishing and
marketing a book,” Nicholas explained. ‘It is a privilege to be part of a process where young authors are provided with the opportunity to publish their own work,’ he shared. Nicholas explained the students came up with their own story ideas but on copywriting the completed manuscript a similar narrative was spotted and that inspired the title of the book. “A theme presented itself of families where their various members were either lost or found, sometimes literally, sometimes figuratively,” he enthused.
Nicholas shared that writing creative, emotionally powerful short stories for the Lost and Found collection was a way for the students to find their own voice and express themselves through writing as they experience and reflect on the world inside and around them. NPSS students included in the Lost and Found publication are: Celeste Baker, Class 10; Isla Reese Hollick, Class 9; Grace Lily Jansen, Class 9; Ella Moon Kennedy, Class 8; Finbar Gaughan, Class 8; Neil McDonald, Class 8; Aliya Klugman Harris, Class 8; Alessandro Coates Hall, Class 8.

With the table set, I take a little rectangular black box and sit it in front of Jack’s seat, along with a birthday card, a huge ‘Happy 50th!’ printed on the front in bold letters. I look at the case for a moment, with its petite silver ribbon tied in a perfect tiny bow on top, and hope that Jack will like it. Of course he will, I think with a smile, my husband likes everything I give him.

Taking one glance around the small cottage we’ve been living in for twenty years and finding everything satisfactory for my spouse’s arrival in ten minutes, I meander back to the couch to continue reading; the worn cover of Wuthering Heights as familiar in my hands as the sun in the sky. I sigh to think of little Cathy, so in love and not yet knowing of the pain and heartbreak awaiting her.

My focus is soon solely upon the novel in my hand and the characters there contained. I easily lose track of time, realising only what hour it is when I pause to yawn and stretch my stiff muscles. I blink at the clock. Then blink again. That’s strange, it’s 8 o’clock. John was meant to be home an hour ago. Just in case, I glance out the window, past the potted plants on the windowsill and the slightly wild garden on the front lawn, to the empty driveway and the silent street beyond. He must be stuck in traffic on his way out of the city, I tell myself. And, ignoring the worried feeling that tugs at my chest, I shrug and delve back into the confusing fictional world of the Linton’s and Earnshaw’s. But even Cathy’s intertwined love life can’t distract me from that anxious nagging.

The drive home seemed normal enough, considering I had not spoken to her since her son, my dad, was put in jail. Coming up the driveway I got that same feeling that I had gotten seeing her for the first time at the airport, but I just brushed it off. I walked into the house and heard an unsettling familiar voice coming from the kitchen. As I paced up that hallway, emotions flowed through me like a running tap. Kids SEUSSICAL JR HEADS TO EUMUNDI Following hot on the heels of the Eumundi performance of The Fantastic Mr Fox and the Lake McDonald production of The Tempest, the youth theatre company Little Seeds presents Seussical JR on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 June, 2.30pm and 6.30pm. Audiences can expect to be transported into the whimsical world of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the town of Who, including Jojo, a child chastised for thinking too many “thinks.” Little Seed’s Musical Director, Connie Groves shared, “This is a challenging and captivating production with performances from talented young people learning their craft here on the Sunshine Coast.” The revamped Eumundi School of Arts Hall is the perfect platform for the production, and Connie said the creative team is, “excited to take quality performances to the Hinterland at a venue with such character, history and amazing acoustics.”

As part of her world tour, Kosha is lecturing on how to develop and grow a healthy, sustainable, ecocommunity. Kosha explained that at the heart of GEN is the Four Dimensions of Sustainability; social, culture, ecology, economy. Kosha shared that along with offering people a gentler, greener lifestyle, ecovillages are
also a solution for rural villages that are dying. On her travels with GEN she’s seen this is a global phenomenon. “We’ve [GEN] just been asked by the Spanish Government to run a project that will repopulate the emptying rural villages of Spain through ecovillage approaches,” Kosha shared. “More and more governments are implementing ecovillage living – they’ve all signed up to implement the sustainable climate goals as part of the Global Climate Agreement [United Nations Paris Agreement 2018].” “If the governments can work with their people to transition into ecovillage living, we can transform into sustainable regenerative societies on a global scale,” she enthused. Kosha explained that an ecovillage revitalises a local economy too. “Findhorn has had heaps of research done on how the thriving ecovillage actually improves the health of
the local economy.“ The area around Findhorn has the highest concentration of social entrepreneurships (start-ups) in the whole of the UK - regions can be revitalised by having an ecovillage at the centre, which attracts new groups to move into the area - like alternative schools, food suppliers, restaurants, etc. [ecovillage.org/about/reports]. The word ‘community’ can be bandied around a lot and can mean different things to different groups or governments. For Kosha community is, “A cohesiveness
that gives people a sense of belonging to place, to land, to the ecosystems around them, the social system, but also deeply rooted in culture.” “Community is a set of healthy relationships – which means conflicts are part of that because conflicts are part of life – a rubbing of diversity – but also having enough cohesiveness to belong - a tension between belonging and becoming,” she shared. HINTERLAND ECOVILLAGES Bellbunya, Belli Park is a not-for-profit permaculture community on 16 hectares (40 acres) that was established in 2008 to explore ways to create a re-localised and sustainable future. The ecovillage has organic food gardens, wildlife corridors, a creek and lagoon, a conference hall and restaurant and accommodation for up to 16 guests. The centre is run on 100% renewable energy through its 7.2kva solar panel system and by buying wind farm energy. Starlight Community, Eerwah Vale/ Yandina was established in 1972 on 130 hectares in as a multiple occupancy bushland community centred around a large communal hall, with 26 blocks ranging from four to 11 hectares with each hectare corresponding to a share in the company. The main aims are to be a sustainable residential community, cooperatively managing the land to foster a harmonious neighbourhood, while preserving the native regenerating forest. Crystal Waters Village, Conondale was Australia’s first permaculture village. Situated on 260 hectares classified as Land for Wildlife, it incorporates 83 private residential lots, a village commercial centre, visitor’s accommodation area, monthly village markets on the first Saturday of the month, and has over 200 hectares of common land. The majority of blocks are 4046sqm freehold properties.

This in itself is reason enough to look after this site. There are some weeds on the edges of this patch that hopefully Eumundi Bushcare Group will be able to get stuck into. Come along to
