Got a bit muddy recently. To be expected – you say – with all the rain we’ve had. And yes gardening, camping and bushwalking in the hinterland is a muddy endeavor. But I also competed in the Tough Mudder event at Woodford with a bunch of crazy locals looking for a challenging incentive to get fit and break old habits (page 13). It was so much fun to basically play with friends in a huge muddy playground for grownups. And a great reminder that anything is possible if you set your mind to it – and train hard!

Eumundi Rotary Club held their fifth Pride of Work awards on Thur 9 May at Joe’s Waterhole with an audience of over 100 locals with entertainment from local musician Ben Oliver. Owners, employees, trade and services contractors, professionals, and market stall holders, were recognised for going the extra mile at their workplace. Guest speaker Jenny Brice challenged the audience to consider managing and working differently due to the rapid technological changes affecting all workplaces. Jenny’s consulting business specialises in executive coaching and is highly regarded for her knowledge of the gig economy. She has a boutique conference venue in Eumundi where she facilitates business meetings and conducts workshops. Jenny is a national presenter and writer on radio and in print including our own The Green. Eumundi Rotary president Tania Broadbent said, “Tonight’s Pride of Work awards recognised some of the outstanding individuals in our community who during the last year have demonstrated outstanding service, attitude and presentation and in many cases gave a nod every day to promoting Eumundi as well.” “The 23 individuals were nominated by customers, colleagues, owners of business enterprises, or from community entity representatives,” Tania explained.

Community EUMUNDI POLICE UPDATE Sgt Ryan Hanlon, Eumundi Police 5442 8222 Last week a 29 year old male was arrested for up to 10 business Burglary offences from Noosa to Pomona and also included Eumundi’s own Humdrum Espresso and Thai Restaurant on Memorial Drive. Thanks to the businesses who supplied the CCTV footage to help identify the offender who was not from Eumundi. The offender was located in Caboolture and is currently in
custody awaiting his court date. During the month of April police detected two drink drivers, three drug drivers, three unlicensed drivers and one unregistered vehicle. Police from Road policing unit (Traffic Branch) and Eumundi Police issued a total of 89 tickets for the month, mainly related to excessed speed between 13 – 30km/h over the speed limit. There were
some hooning infringement notices issued to vehicles in the Hinterland areas for hoon related offences. Six offenders were charged with drug related offences whilst police investigated 59 matters throughout April. Please make sure all cars are locked in your driveways overnight and report suspicious behaviour. Anzac Day was a huge success and I thank the community and
the organising committees for inviting me to be part of the day from the Dawn service at Verrierdale Hall to the main parade at Eumundi. Just a reminder that the Eumundi Police Station phones have changed and the new number is 5475 2323. If we are out patrolling it will divert to Policelink, who will enter the job and despatch us to you.

are so lucky to have such an exceptional palliative care service here in our region. Well done to the entire team of volunteers, which at last count numbered 240, who keep this valuable service operating. The juvenile justice crisis the Government is facing did not happen overnight. It’s a situation that has been brewing since they decided to transfer 17 year old offenders from adult jails into Youth Detention Centres that were already overflowing. We’re now seeing offenders as young as 10 being held for up to 40 days in adult, maximum security watch houses because youth detention centres are overflowing. Community W E A R A B L E A R T S T R U T S E U M U N D I C AT WA L K Last Friday night Eumundi Square hosted the sold out Australian Wearable Art Festival under a clear, starry night. Over 40 wearable works designed by artists, mostly from Queensland, walked the 16metre runway. Event curator, Wendy Roe was extremely proud. “It’s all come together beautifully. I’m totally amazed that we’ve created this wonderful event,” Wendy said. Kait Manchip and Micha Carington styled the space to perfection with chandeliers from Yanni evoking an elegant high fashion vibe from recycled materials. Judging the creations was hinterland artist Jandamarra Cadd, and designers Peter Dwyer of the Whitehouse Design Institute and fashion designer for Lady Gagga, Cindy Vogels.
Lyndon and Jackie, designers Peter Dwyer and Cindy Vogels both showcased their wearable Art creations down the runway. The judges awarded $3,600 across the four main categories: Avant Garde, Floriana, Trashion and Sustainable – plus additional prizes for HauteCouture, Headpiece, First Nation and best tertiary and secondary student pieces.
Wendy felt it was appropriate that this vibrant event find its home in Eumundi. “Eumundi is a creative hub and Eumundi is

After many years of neglect, I’ve rediscovered the joys and usefulness of reading poetry. Prompted by the recent deaths of two beloved poets, Australian Les Murray, 80 and American Mary Oliver, 83, their volumes made their way to my bedside table.

Poetry is a powerful antidote to that seductive but stressful world: a sort of meditation. Attention must be paid and focused. Murray’s and Oliver’s deaths so close together seemed to be inviting comparison. Although they come from different worlds and with different styles, they have much in common beyond their affiliation with the natural world. Both had traumatic childhoods in rural settings on opposite sides of the world. Oliver is sweeter, more direct with the clarity of a persuader. Unlike Murray, her wilderness is not intense with animal and human suffering, she has a message of salvation in nature. “To pay attention, this is our endless and proper work”. She asked, “Tell me, what is it you plan to do / with your one wild and precious life?” and reminds us that “death comes and takes all the bright coins from his purse/ to buy me, and snaps the

And, if taken on a regular on a regular basis, they can also bring the rattling distractions to a producing calm.” I’m taking her prescription and can heartily recommend it.

Discover new Healthy Sunshine Coast classes After 12 weeks of training, 19 women and two lads from Eumundi Fitness fronted up to the Tough Mudder course in Woodford with thousands of other athletes. The group, who varied in age and fitness, had to run 5km through rain and mud and overcome 13 challenging hurdles, which tested strength, endurance and teamwork. To get the crew match-fit, personal trainer Sam Williams held multiple weekly training sessions and a Sunday run club. Sam explained that team
challenges are a great way for people to break long term habits and make new, positive changes for their overall wellbeing. “Not only does the group dynamic act in a positive way by keeping everyone accountable, the feeling of accomplishment and doing something they thought impossible, gives each person a real sense of empowerment and it develops resilience,” Sam explained. “The group also inspired each other to try new things in all areas of their life.” Cont’d on pg 18

Verge planting guidelines now available It’s now even easier to plant a garden on your nature strip or verge following council’s introduction of new self-assessable criteria. Within the criteria, you can plant a hedge up to 1.5m high along the fence and plant a garden bed up to 50cm high on the verge, leaving 1.8m for pedestrian access, without needing a permit or public liability insurance. Busy C hicks Eumundi’s CWA runs a monthly Busy Chicks meeting on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 7pm at the CWA Hall, Memorial Dr. The group encourage busy local women to come along and share recipes and craft skills. After WWII women saw the losses to communities on both sides and felt that if we understood each other better we could avoid further conflicts and heal more quickly. This year QCWA is studying Lithuania - history, culture and food - along with the children at Eumundi State School. Lithuanian dishes are heavily reliant upon root vegetables, meat and dairy products which can be grown in their cold climate. Filling, hearty, and meant to keep you warm from the inside, Lithuanian food is worth trying in this our very short cool season. A celebration of Lithuania will be held at Eumundi State School at 9.30 on Tuesday 11 June. Serves 6. Ingredients 800 g potatoes peeled and grated
165ml cream or milk (as it can be too dry)
Fry bacon for 3-4 minutes, add shallots.
Onion Rings
Cook 3 minutes then combine with potato mix.
2 beaten eggs
100ml vegetable oil
2 tblsp cornflour
1 large onion cut into rings
½ tsp baking powder
2 tblsp flour
200 g diced bacon
Method
2 shallots finely chopped
Set oven to 200°C/400 F.
½ tsp ground carraway seeds
Grate potato then wrap in muslin (or a tea towel) to squeeze out excess water.
2 tblsp chopped dill (I reduce this as it can be overpowering) Salt and pepper 14
Put potato in bowl with beaten eggs, flour and baking powder.

Add carraway seeds and dill. Season. Put mixture into an ovenproof dish and bake for 35-40 minutes. Heat oil. Coat onion rings with flour then fry until crisp and golden. Serve the bake topped with onion rings.
Heritage NEW LIFE FOR GRAND OLD HALL Wendy Birrell, Discover Eumundi manager Many will have noticed some recent changes to the Eumundi School of Arts hall - both inside and out. Built in 1912, the hall has endured through two world wars and damaged a number of times due to termite infestations which finally saw it reduced to one storey from a very impressive two storeys in the 1960’s. With the advent of television, the hall, once the centre of community life with debutante balls, theatre productions, indoor bowls, badminton and more, was used less and less with the hall committee struggling to keep up with costs. In 1989 the Eumundi and District Association (EHA) took over as Trustee of the hall and responsibility for all maintenance and upkeep for what is now a heritage listed building. EHA recently engaged local building designers, builders and painters to do major restoration and renovation work as EHA President Donata Page said, “to ensure that the hall continues to be used and enjoyed by future generations.” The work included a major renovation of the main toilets, painting the outside and most of the inside of the hall, upgrade of lighting, renovation of the bar area, solar panels.
Grimley and Claudia Silva from Ecolibrium Designs recently received two awards at the Building Designers Association of Qld Regional Awards Sunshine Coast, for work done on the School of Arts in the Best Heritage Design (new or alterations/additions) and Alterations/additions Public Buildings. Brett stated, “It’s fantastic to see this come to fruition. We really wanted to help give the hall a modern, theatrical lift with our toilet design whilst staying true to her historical origins.” This building really can be called a grand old lady once again. Steve Husband, Noosa Landcare projects manager Would you encourage others to do this? Why? Yes, we encourage landowners to restore natural vegetation cover to previously cleared land. The benefits of revegetation planting include contributing to climate change mitigation; increasing carbon storage in vegetation and soil; re-introducing native animals, birds and insects; reducing erosion and sediment run-off; improving stability in areas prone to landslips; reducing expensive land management inputs such as mowing/slashing and exotic weed control; and improving water quality. Who assesses the property? Noosa and District Landcare Group offer a property consultation service via feefor-service or as a benefit of membership. Local councils employ Land For Wildlife officers who assess properties as part of the application process. Can the landowner choose the plants? Certainly, in consultation with Land For Wildlife officers or Landcare groups. Landowners often request specific plants to be included in revegetation projects, such as rare and threatened species, and species that attract birds, bees and native animals. How can locals do this? There are many ways to achieve revegetation outcomes on
residential and rural properties. These include registering with local councils as Land For Wildlife properties, sourcing funding via Australian and Qld Government-funded projects; or contacting local Landcare groups for advice. What’s the cost? Cost options range from small-scale, do-it-yourself projects through to fully-funded revegetation works funded by government or regional natural resource management bodies. After buying and building in Eumundi, the Deverill’s embarked on a journey to regenerate their property that was overrun by weeds. Many hinterland properties have been stripped of their original habitat and landowners are keen to see their piece of the hinterland returned to a biodiverse part of the region to encourage native plants, insects and animals to return and flourish. But becoming the caretaker of native bushland can seem a daunting prospect with many concerned that integrating numerous land uses, such as farming, recreation, permaculture, etc, into one property isn’t feasible. Jo Deverill put in an application for a Landholder environment grant administered by Land for Wildlife. A Noosa Landcare volunteer then came out to assess the habitat then gave a list of approved plants that would help Joe achieve his ambitious goal – to re-establish a native forest in the heart of Eumundi. “Returning the land to the state it would’ve been in 200 years ago,” Jo explained. To prepare the site for Landcare the Deverill’s had to clear the property of weeds. Jo explained Singapore Daisies were rampant, pine trees had taken root, plus their were introduced grass species. “For the regeneration to be successful you must do this
first or the natives will die,” Jo explained. While clearing the weeds they created paths so the family can enjoy watching the planting grow and change over time. Jo is looking forward to seeing 13 foot high trees in five years. “In 10 years there’ll be a native forest,” Jo enthused. This isn’t the first time the Deverill’s have regenerated cleared land. They successfully returned their property to native vegetation in Black Mountain and found the process really fulfilling. “It’s amazing how many birds and insects this encourages,” Jo explained. Once the Eumundi site was prepped, Landcare volunteers planted 2000 natives on the property. Jo encourages other hinterlanders to embark on land conservation. “Together we can ensure our hinterland stays green and remains a haven for native flora and fauna,” he enthused. Do chickens need winter coats? Chickens can look very adorable in little knitted coats, but do they actually need them in winter? The design of your chicken coop is one of the most important aspects of keeping chickens warm in winter. The coop needs to be draft-free (facing away from any cold southerly and westerly winds) and dry. As long as your chooks go to bed dry they can maintain their body heat, even on nights that drop into single figures. How do they do this? 1. Feathers: Underneath the
outer feathers are a mass of downy feathers. Your chooks can “fluff” these up and trap warm air around their body and prevent cold air coming in contact with their skin. 2. Head: They tuck their heads into their feathers to sleep, so this prevents them from breathing in cold air. 3. Snuggling: In the cold chooks will move closer together on the roost and further apart on warmer nights. Sharing their body heat is a very effective heating system.
4. Diet: Digestion can create more heat so ensure they have plenty of food that is available all day. Some higher energy treats like corn and extra protein may also be beneficial before bedtime. 5. Shelter: Feathers can keep out a light shower but if chooks have nowhere to get out of the rain, they might get wet right down to their skin. This means,
if they can’t fluff up their feathers effectively they can feel the effects of the cold. Cont’d on pg 18

These young people are not angels, but they should not be kept in an environment like that. New laws fail to protect most vulnerable Recently in Parliament I spoke in support of tough new measures to protect our most vulnerable. The LNP’s Mason Jett Lee Amendment Bill would have essentially filled a big gap in current sentencing for child homicide, with offenders convicted of child manslaughter serving a minimum sentence of 15 years in jail. The average is currently only 6.8 years. I was disappointed the Government failed to support these amendments. The community is crying out for tougher sentences for those monsters who kill innocent, defenceless young kids. As I said in Parliament, there is no excuse for killing a vulnerable child. There is no worse crime, there is no worse offender, and there is no punishment harsh enough to fit this crime. I’d love to know your thoughts on these issues. Considering the factors above, it is critical that a chicken can fluff up its feathers at night time. Unfortunately, the cute winter coats prevent this from happening and can actually make them cooler at night. The only time that coats are ideal is for chickens that have no feathers, or very few feathers (e.g. a rescue battery hen or a serious moult). Our summer heat is more lifethreatening to a chicken than the cold.
As the group’s trainer, Sam shared how wonderful it was to see the group approach the fitness challenge with enthusiasm, commitment and incredible comradery. “Seeing their smiling faces and hearing them share their sense of accomplishment at the end was fantastic,” Sam said. “They are incredible role models for their community.” The fitness group came out of the challenge muddy and bruised, but unbroken. Each had a favourite challenge or moment, but all agreed the real joy was in doing Tough Mudder together. Sarah Hillhouse shared the course was like a huge, muddy playground for grown-ups. Jacqueline Wilson-Smith said she’s still sore, grazed and bruised a week later but, “Still smiling when I think about how much tremendous fun this was.”
