A HINTERLAND MOMENT Editor’s note ... It was a short, messy production this issue with Easter and ANZAC public holidays topping and tailing the week, and kids going back to school. Wednesday markets were so very busy, just trying to leave my house to get out of the village was arduous – let alone getting back in. But what shone through a busy fortnight was our wonderful community spirit. Locals came together in the hundreds at our Verrierdale and Eumundi ANZAC Day services. And the tradition of the Verrierdale Gunfire breakie and 2-up at Joe’s gives us a chance to catch up and connect with our community.

EUMUNDI PHYSIO RETURNS After a brief stint at Lake Weyba, physiotherapist, Andrea Shaw, has relocated her practice back into Eumundi village. “It was with regret that I had to move my practice, but at the time my aging parents needed me.” “My situation has now changed, and I’m very happy to be back!” Andrea enthused. Eumundi Physio is situated in the town’s 1909 Bedington boarding house in Cook St, which was originally used to house workers on the railway. “I love the idea that I’m continuing the historic use of this house as a place of caring for locals,” Andrea shared.

Community THE ENDURING ANZAC SPIRIT Air Marshal Geoff Shepherd AO, is a retired senior officer in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), who served as Chief of Air Force from 2005 until 2008. In 2006 he was elevated to Officer of the Order of Australia. ANZAC Day is for me the true Day for Australians - free from the politics and the growing revisionist history divisions attendant to Australia Day. Today we honour not policy or politics, but the honourable and essentially human attributes of those who have served, those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and those who returned, but continued to suffer all the rest of their lives. We also honour their families. We honour the ANZAC spirit. But what is that Spirit? Every ANZAC Day we subscribe all the essentially good human character aspects to this Spirit: courage, honour, steadfastness, humour in adversity. But are they unique to us Australians - were they unique to just the original ANZACs? Of course not. Many other Nations share many of these attributes. If you have stood on the Turkish heights above ANZAC Cove – you are in no doubt, that the original ANZACs were NOT thinking of an ‘ANZAC Spirit’ as they rowed ashore in the pre-dawn – they
would have been consumed by a mixture of excitement and fear. But they endured for eight months and 26,000 - odd casualties with over 8,000 dead. They endured in France for three years of brutal trench warfare with over 181,000 casualties and over 46,000 dead. They endured in WW2 with over 37,000 dead. They endured in Korea. They endured in Malaya, and in Konfrontasi. They endured in Vietnam with 521 dead and over 3,500 casualties, and they have endured in the modern conflicts of Bouganville, East Timor, Afghanistan I, Iraq, Afghanistan II and in Syria. The sacrifice of 102,872 young Australians: in the air, on and under the seas and in all the jungles, deserts, fields and mountains far and wide where Aussies have died - was all for what? They did not leave us conquered lands - there are no Golan Heights or Crimea claimed by us. We are not an aggressive, hegemonic nation. They left as Cont’d on pg 18

In late ’45 after four years you returned like many others burdened with malaria, booze and hate. I didn’t know you until later, I didn’t know what qualities you may have gained or lost: facing obstinate aggressors from the north, one man went away and another came back. When the family considered it was best to forget and the children treated you with unease you unburdened most of it on me: the harrowing trudges through shackling mud, dysentery and snipers; the unofficial ‘no prisoners taken’. The deeds of your mates you could barely mention; the rifle butt to blunt disobedient carriers and the shrugging off of the cook who shot down one starving enemy who’d been brought in. You said there was a fine line between angels and hell; you didn’t seek forgiveness, nor deliverance. In the maelstrom of savagery, you said, “murder is not a word we use.” and I appreciate what you meant. You told me survival was not concerned with heroic visions. Now the hollow eyes of the doomed give you nightmares. I’m sure you were once personable and bright before your spirit became haunted. *The subject of this poem died about 1982. Community EUMUNDI SS & NORTH ARM SS A N Z A C D AY S P E E C H Col Greg Molyneux (Ret) was a member of the Australian Defence Force for 32 years, and served in several places within Australia, in England, Canada, the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, and in East Timor. He retired from Defence in 2006. When the ANZACs landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey in April, 1915, they had no idea of the intense and deadly combat that awaited them, nor of the fatigue, despair and hardship they would have to endure throughout the campaign, nor of the injuries they would suffer, nor of the shocking memories they would carry home with them. Yet they banded together and fought with a spontaneous, fearless, almost instinctive tenacity and grit that would come to define the ANZAC spirit. A spirit that touches our hearts, inspires our passion, focuses our purpose, strengthens our resolve, and, more than anything else, encapsulates the very essence of our national culture and makeup. Beyond Gallipoli, right up until the end of WW1 in 1918, the
character, spirit, courage, and wry sense of humour displayed by the Australian soldiers were clearly evident. An Australian soldier would rather die than let his mates down, and mateship, along with pride in country, afforded the Australians the strength they needed to endure the terrible ordeal of the Great War. These twin ideals of mateship and country were also very evident during the Second World War, the Korean War, the Malayan Emergency, the Vietnam War, and more recently during the conflicts in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan. During these conflicts many thousands of Australians paid the ultimate sacrifice, and, just as the original ANZACs did at Gallipoli, these more modern day ANZACs sacrificed their lives in support of their mates and country. Anzac Day I was honoured to join local Anzac Day services across the local community to commemorate one of the most important days of the year. On Wednesday, I attended the service with students, teachers and staff at Eumundi State School, followed by a busy schedule of services on Anzac Day, starting with the annual dawn service hosted by the Coolum Peregian RSL Sub Branch, the Eumundi service at the amphitheatre, and the march and service in Yandina, hosted by the Yandina Eumundi RSL. It is humbling to see such large crowds gather for these local services, and there’s no doubt the Anzac spirit is alive and well in our community. Thank you to all those schools and local service clubs who hosted events, ensuring the proud tradition of Anzac Day is honoured, and the memory of those who have fought for our freedoms is never forgotten.

Eumundi Rotary’s Long Lunch delivers Last month I was delighted to be part of Eumundi Rotary’s 5th annual Long Lunch, a fundraiser for the Katie Rose Cottage Hospice. Support for this annual event seems to grow every year and judging by the massive $28,000 donation made to the hospice, the community have once again rallied to support this worthy cause. Well done to our hardworking Rotary members for all their hard work and meticulous planning which ensured yet another fantastic, well run and well supported function. Gambling Grants Congratulations to the Eumundi Pony Club, who were successful in the latest funding round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund grants. The Club received $24,000 to purchase new equipment. It was one of six local groups sharing in more than $150,000. Next round closes 31 May. gamblingcommunityfund.qld.gov.au.

Eumundi Rotary recently presented Katie Rose Cottage Hospice in Doonan with the $23,000 raised from this year’s Long Lunch event. A further $5000 of grant money is still to come once certain works are completed.
T E WA N T I N TA F E S I T E P U R C H A S E CONFIRMED Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington last week welcomed confirmation the State Govt had finally accepted Council’s $1.7M offer to buy the former 11-hectare TAFE property at Tewantin. Council is yet to decide on the site’s long-term future. The Mayor said any potential use would need to show community benefit and not come at an additional cost to Noosa ratepayers. “There’ll be a detailed investigation of options for the use of the site which will be brought back to Council,” Mr Wellington shared. The Mayor said a significant portion of the site was home to endangered vegetation, plus koala, black-cockatoo and wallum rocket frog habitat. “Ensuring this critical regional ecosystem is protected will of course be a top priority. That also means that the building footprint is unlikely to be enlarged,” he confirmed.

of Eureka are favourites. They opened my eyes to new ways of seeing the world I live in.

This year’s winner is Vicki Laveau-Harvie’s, The Erratics and it’s yet another Stella winner I’m going to be proselyting! On the surface it seems an unlikely choice; a memoir by a first time author about a woman and her sister dealing with the final disintegration of their highly dysfunctional family on opposite sides of the world. Sounds prosaic and mundane. We’d expect nursing homes and inheritance disputes, sad memories of loving parents. But what makes The Erratics so very good is Laveau-Harvie’s remarkable writing. She manages to convey distance but intense involvement, reflecting her actual relationship with her parents. She is funny, ironic and insightful and her descriptions, especially of landscape and settings, read like the best fiction. But it’s the story and characters, especially the dangerously narcissistic mother and precarious father, that are so compelling. Like the best

I like to follow the nominations - the long and short lists provide an overabundance of choice - and then read the final winners. The history and culture of each prize is fascinating too. Although its only been around for six years, the Stella prize has consistently provided me with excellent books and new authors writing from an Australian perspective. Tolstoy said, “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” ‘Unhappy’ is a benign description of this family and yet they somehow emerge newly formed. Their story reveals so much about the nature of these primal relationships. A passage from the cover blurb sums it up well... “We’ve been disowned and disinherited: there’s no changing it, I say. When something bad happens to them, we’ll know soon enough and we’ll deal with it together. I don’t realise it at the time, but when I say that, I imply I care. I imply there may be something to be salvaged. I misspeak. But I’m flying out anyway. Blood calls to blood; what can I tell
you.” The Stella Prize is a major literary award celebrating Australian women’s writing and an organisation that champions cultural change. The prize is named after one of Australia’s iconic female authors, Stella Maria Sarah ‘Miles’ Franklin, and was awarded for the first time in 2013. Both nonfiction and fiction books by Australian women are eligible for entry. The Stella Prize seeks to: recognise and celebrate Australian women writers’ contribution to literature; bring more readers to books by women and thus increase their sales. It offers a $50,000 prize to the winner each year.

Kids Cont’d from pg 9 I believe the ANZAC spirit is embodied in the following attributes; courage, tenacity, mateship, pride in country and humour. They were displayed by the original ANZAC’s at Gallipoli, and by our soldiers, sailors and airmen and women in every conflict since Gallipoli, and today by our modern-day Defence Force personnel. Importantly, these attributes are also evident throughout all Australian society today, whether we are: responding to a natural disaster, playing a game of footy, training as a nipper, teaching a class of children, participating in a swimming carnival, doing homework, or simply enjoying a
joke with friends. We have learnt a great deal from the ANZACs, and we tend to go about our daily activities with the ANZAC spirit at the very core of our being. On ANZAC Day I feel very proud of my own military service. It gives me the opportunity to remember the sacrifice of those who have served our country, particularly those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. I am very grateful for our independent nationhood which gives us the freedom to; think, move, speak, worship, vote, own property, raise a family and educate our children. Lest We Forget

Health EXERCISE, HORMONES & WEIGHT LOSS IN WOMEN Brooke Conlan - Personal Trainer, Eumundi When women approach me about how exercise can help them reach a healthy weight range, the first thing I mention is that it takes more than just exercise. In fact while exercise is a very important part of achieving a healthy body, weight, nutrition, sleep, stress and lifestyle play a huge part also. What a lot of women don’t realise is how much hormone function impacts on weight loss. Without a good exercise program, adequate sleep, time out and a healthy eating plan, hormone balance can be disrupted affecting weight loss. Elevated estrogen slows metabolism which can lead to weight gain. When this occurs women tend to find their weight gain mainly in the areas around the belly and hips. While we cannot target where we lose body fat from we CAN aim to improve lots of areas in our lives that will help prevent weight gain and assist with healthy weight loss.
Exercise: Establishing and maintaining a good exercise regime that involves some form of strength training, cardiovascular fitness and mobility exercises, is what’s required to help keep the metabolism in check, regulate the hormone insulin and promote a healthy, positive mindset, as well as build strength. Some form of physical activity incorporating cardio fitness is recommended daily and ideally at least two strength training sessions a week. This is especially important in women over 40. There’s a shift in hormones, estrogen drops off and bone density depletes, making some women prone to osteoporosis.

People most at risk of catching the virus are those born between 1966 and 1994, as they did not receive two doses of the MMR (measles-mumpsrubella) vaccine. While we’ve had the measles vaccine in Australia since 1968, a two-dose program was only introduced in 1992. A brief school-based catch-up program from 1993 to 1994 offered school children a second dose, but it was ad-hoc. People in their 20’s to early 50’s can request their GP check their vaccination records and may do a blood test if there is no proof of immunisation. Eumundi pharmacist Tania Watson advised that anyone unsure about their vaccination status should get a booster, due to the increase in cases of measles (including most recently the case in North Brisbane). “Measles containing vaccine is recommended for children at 12 months of age as MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine, and at 18 months of age as MMRV (measles-mumps-rubellavaricella) vaccine,” she explained.

Tania said no pharmacists are currently able to provide measles vaccinations. When presented with a prescription for a script for a measles vaccination the Thursday before Easter for a customer who was travelling overseas, Tania quickly discovered (after a number of phone calls) that it is currently unavailable. “Of course in the current climate I was horrified,” she said.

High vaccination rates has meant the virus doesn’t continuously spread, but we still have measle outbreaks when travellers unknowingly bring it back into the country. If you’re not immune to the virus, through vaccination or past infection, the chance of becoming ill after being near someone with measles is 90%. An infected person is highly contagious from the first day of symptoms (fever, cough and runny nose). These symptoms start about four days before the rash develops, meaning contagious people can spread the virus even before they realise they are infected. Measles spreads through touch, or breathing in the same air as an infected person. The virus stays alive in the air, or on infected surfaces, for around two hours. It can also cause middle ear infections (otitis media), chest infections (pneumonia), and diarrhoea. Swelling and inflammation to the brain (encephalitis) occurs in one in every 1,000 cases and can lead to permanent brain damage or death. In 2017, 110,000 people died from measles worldwide. Children in Australia routinely get this vaccine at 12 and 18 months of age. The second dose is given in combination with the chickenpox vaccine. Australia currently has all time high vaccine coverage, with 94.5% of five year-old children fully immunised at the end of 2017. By keeping vaccine coverage near or above 95%, herd immunity where there are enough people vaccinated, helps prevent measles from spreading to others, including those who cannot be vaccinated. beta.health.gov.au

CALL FOR AIRPORT CURFEW Noosa Council has called for an enforced night curfew for Sunshine Coast Airport and an extension to the consultation period to support residents’ concerns about Airservices Australia’s proposed changes to flight paths. In addition, Noosa Council will call on airport owner Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) to conduct an independent Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Lake Weyba, plus Noosa National Park. Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie said, “Noosa Council will also call on Federal Members Llew O’Brien and Ted O’Brien to support our position on this matter.” “We will be requesting a detailed explanation from Airservices Australia as to why the intensity of flight numbers over the coastal flight path versus hinterland flight path has changed,” the Deputy Mayor said. Cr Wilkie said that while Noosa Council had no regulatory authority over the project, Councillors had an advocacy role on behalf of residents who may be impacted.
Four other Australian airports have a mandatory curfew on jet operations; Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne’s Essendon Airport and Adelaide. “Limiting the hours of operation at night, similar to what happens on the Gold Coast, would minimise the noise impacts, better protect the amenity of residents and still allow the airport to operate efficiently,” Deputy Mayor said. “We appreciate that Sunshine Coast has a voluntary Fly Neighbourhood Policy involving minimal flights at night, but a curfew enforced by legislation would provide a stronger level of protection for residents.” Given the strong community interest, Council also wants Air services Australia to extend the consultation period by a month, to provide adequate time for feedback on the proposed flight path changes. In 2014 and 2015, there was considerable public consultation on the flight paths proposed during the original EIS process. But given the proposed changes in the coastal flight path intensity since then, Noosa Council is requesting another Environmental Impact Statement on residents’ behalf. Cr Wilkie said flight path location would not form part of the submission as there was currently a hinterland versus coastal divide as to where they should go.
I rescued this grand old lady from the middle of EumundiKenilworth Rd at Eerwah Vale one afternoon. She’s a broadshelled turtle - the biggest I’ve ever seen I think! I couldn’t see any nice watery habitat around where I found her, so I popped her in the boot (where she took up about a quarter of the floor space) and drove her to Belli Creek where I released her. She seemed quite lethargic and slow, so I’m really glad I got to her in time. If you see a turtle on the road and it’s safe to stop and help, please consider moving it to the other side of the road (in the direction it’s headed) to help it avoid getting hit! I’d also like to say thank you to the two women who separately pulled over to check that I was ok when they saw me on the edge of the road – it’s great to know that we live in such a caring community.

These are the three attributes that define us as Aussies, as clearly now as then, and identify us in International company.

We have developed as a nation, as a people, since those days. So has our ‘Way’ - our collective Australian spirit. From our Mediterranean immigrants we learnt the value of family. From our Asian brethren we have benefitted from their focus, again, on family and on the worth of collective endeavour.
There are many growing threats to our continued happiness. A superpower collision in Asia between the USA and a more assertive China is, thankfully, nowhere certain - but such a confrontation would be disastrous for us. The threat of terrorism has been reinforced by the recent atrocities in Christchurch and Colombo.
But what is unique to us as Aussies and what the ANZAC’s had in abundance, is what sets us apart. Mateship. That’s what kept us alive on the Thai-Burma death railway when the Brits died in their hundreds destroyed by their class system. Quiet, authority

trouble spots as any nation can be, is afflicted by extremism, then we are all, uniformed or not, on the front line. But more subtle threats exist too. We see a growing sense of intolerance in our society. And the growth of extreme viewpoints. We see the dumbing-down of complex issues requiring serious thought and public discussion into Twitter-short sound bites on Facebook. We see the rise of aggressive, single-issue zealots who cannot comprehend, much less accommodate, any contrary views and who denigrate and vilify those who do not support their blinkered views. We see the rise of virulent umbrage and the politics of victim identity.

We must, all of us, push-back against these harmful influences. We grow in stature as a people from a considered acceptance of differing viewpoints. We are
This ANZAC Spirit as really the Australian way of doing things - how we relate to others and how we conduct ourselves - the understated aspects of our society which bind us together. The ANZAC Spirit and all that that means, is as good as anything I have seen around the world, and far better than most, to be defined by. Our original ANZACs and all the Servicemen and Servicewomen who followed them served and died for this high ideal - that of a free, equal and inclusive Australia. In our daily lives we could do a lot worse, by ourselves and by our nation, than to live by the Spirit which sustained the ANZAC’s.

My association with Ray White Dayboro has been a long and satisfying one by any standard.
