Yet inevitably, I’ll have to fight to get them outdoors – “Not another bushwalk!” They’ll moan! “I’m sick of the beach!” they’ll whine, “Not camping again!” they plead, “No more craft!” they beg. “We want to go to a theme park, we want screen time, we want MORE sleepovers!” I like to think that because of where we live, they do a lot more outdoor adventuring than most. Plus we live in a beautiful pocket of the world that people travel from all over to for their holidays. Why would you leave?! To support local business Eumundi Chamber of Commerce (ECC) is about to reach a whole new level with the upcoming launch of a fresh website driven by powerful member management software designed specifically for Chambers of Commerce, which places an extensive range of exclusive services at the fingertips of its members. Development of the new website eumundichamber.com.au with new branding and logo is the result of identified priorities in a member survey. Specifically members wanted a website with a modern, fresh look and feel, up-to-date content and links, that also provided access to their own listing and information, as well as functionality in the way in which they were able to communicate with Chamber and each other. “We are excited by what our new website can do to meet member’s expectations and needs by allowing members to communicate and connect with ECC as well as other members and community stakeholders in a far more efficient and effective way. Features such as a members register, job’s wanted, jobs available, online directory, event calendar, member referrals, regional stakeholder networking nights, workshop details and business resources will be available from the site as well as other key pages which
will provide members with a ‘one stop shop’ to find up to date and relevant information within the business community,” said Vice President Cindy Suters. The new website will provide members with direct connection to ECC whether at work, at home, or travelling using either a computer, device or phone. “The management committee have put in countless hours developing this new website that addresses today’s world of doing business and communication. Eumundi is not only a beautiful hinterland township, it’s a town enriched with hard working people that don’t have time to read copious amount of emails each day and search five different websites to get what they need. We want this website to be that one place a business owner can go to get local information they need,” said David Perez, Chamber President. Unveiling eumundichamber.com. au is planned for the end of May. It will be officially launched at the ECC Annual General Meeting. Cr Greg Rogerson has confirmed that the Sunshine Coast Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads has approved the development of a four pump service station at 10 Memorial Dr (southern access). The application was lodged on 19 January 2018. Owners of the land, Raymond Charles Ladewig and wife Thelma, who also own the Strawberry farm opposite the site, consented to the Altum Constructions development application under the Planning Act 2016 by Project Urban. The application

included: a flood impact report, impact assessment report and sight plans designed by Maroochydore Architecture firm Blackburne Jackson Design. Cr Rogerson said, “Originally the developer had wanted to put a larger supermarket on the sight but council didn’t approve of a supermarket on that sight stating such a development would need to be in the town.”

Last weekend I joined locals to acknowledge the 40th anniversary celebrations of the Original Eumundi Markets. As well as launching The First 40 Years exhibition, painstakingly put together by the Eumundi Historical Association, I was also able to sponsor a special commemorative plaque to mark the occasion.
I then headed to Parliament, where I proceeded to share the story of how a humble market boasting just three stalls and attracting only eight visitors on its first day back in March 1979, evolved into the Coast’s most popular tourist attraction, with 1.2million visitors every year. Locals know the Eumundi Markets are much more than just a tourist attraction. It has become a breeding ground for small business success, with many local creatives using their skills to grow their wares into state, national and international success stories.
And it is in large part thanks to the dedication, commitment and stewardship of the local community. Groups that include the Eumundi Combined Community Organisation, Eumundi & District Community Association, and the Eumundi Historical & District Assoc., and proudly supported by the Eumundi Chamber of Commerce, Eumundi Rotary, and the Country Women’s Association. Over the decades, the Eumundi community has endured its fair share of trials and tribulations, but thanks to the unwavering support of these groups and locals, we are able to acknowledge and celebrate the vibrant history and proud legacy that is the Eumundi Markets - The Original and still the best. Congratulations.

Cr Rogerson Last Saturday, I attended the 40th Anniversary Festivities for the Eumundi Markets. What should have been an afternoon of pleasant reflection and good times shared with stall holders, Eumundi business owners and the Eumundi community turned into a humiliating and extremely embarrassing verbal tirade handed out to myself and Sunshine Coast Council, by Donata Page the President of Eumundi Historical & District Association Inc. (EHA). In my opinion, without any prior notice or discussion with council representatives or myself, I believe Donata Page used her opportunity to speak publicly to accuse council of using Eumundi Markets as a ‘cash cow’ or words to that effect. These comments were made despite the fact that she, as President of EHA and Board Member of the Eumundi Combined Community Organisations Ltd (ECCO), had participated at a decision-
making level when the Lease Agreements between Sunshine Coast Council and ECCO were negotiated over Council property – property used for ongoing market and carparking purposes. The rent amount charged under each lease was strongly negotiated between both parties; (Council and ECCO) and included valuations done by an independent, qualified valuer who took into account the anticipated financial benefit obtained by ECCO, or its subtenants, in its use of Council owned, public land. New leases for the ‘Terraces’ and the ‘ECCO Carparks’ were entered into with all interested parties being aware of the required upgrade works to the Terraces area, this was to facilitate not only the use of the area by the Markets but also for continued public recreation and benefit, along with meeting any perceived safety concerns. 4 0 Y EA RS O F MA R K ETS Wendy Birrell, Discover Eumundi manager Saturday 24 March was a historic day in Eumundi as the Original Eumundi Markets were celebrated at an opening of the ‘first 40 years’ exhibition in Wan’din’in arts space at Discover Eumundi followed by the traditional stallholders party celebrated in March each year. A highlight of the day was a photo taken of stallholders who have been in the markets for 20 plus years with many over 30 years. A number of former stallholders also attended with one, Sally Moroney coming specially from far north Qld. One of the founders of the market Christa Barton also came for the celebrations.

Community E H A P R E S I D E N T ’ S B I R T H D AY A D D R E S S Well, here we are 40 years on. I’d like firstly to acknowledge Christa Barton. You gave birth to this enterprise. Original Eumundi Markets (OEM) operates today because you recognised the need for artists and artisans to have a space where they could directly interact with people appreciative of their talents. How thankful are we that you chose Eumundi as the place for that space. Well Christa, your baby has thrived. On occasions it has tripped, stumbled and even thrown a few tantrums. Each time it [OEM] has picked itself up, dusted itself off and with renewed determination, forged ahead. Christa, you planted strong roots and others have followed; managers, staff, [OEM caretakers] Eumundi & District Historical Association (EHA), committee members, OEM directors - all giving nourishment with skills in organisation and management and with careful husbandry, have brought us to 2019. To all those people we are grateful.
To every stallholder, who over this 40 year span, has contributed talents, your endeavours to offer to each customer your unique product, you make Original Eumundi Markets - original. A market like ours requires initiative, creativity, discipline, adaptability, resilience - but most of all passion. You all have that by the bucketload. That is why we are still here 40 years on. We face huge challenges, do something successfully and the competitors will come. We have that in Eumundi and across the Sunshine Coast, other markets, other tourist attractions. Our difference is that here, in this space we Make it, Bake it, Grow it and Sew it … and we are damn proud to do so. We do not offer imports. We do not offer knock offs. People come for your product and your story. For some time on a Saturday and Wednesday they come to be part of this unique place where what they buy is authentic. The upgrade to the

terraces, whilst necessary, has come at a cost. This community contributed $900,000: EHA, Eumundi District & Community Association (EDCA), and Eumundi Community Combined Organisation (ECCO), $300,000 each to the upgrade. Sunshine Coast Regional Council contributed $600,000. No way that is a 50/50 split Cr Rogerson as you said in your recent ABC Radio interview. In recognition that we are community NotFor-Profit Associations we used to pay a peppercorn rent to Council for the terraces use. No longer! We currently pay a commercial rate of $130,000 a year split between EHA, EDCA, increasing by $10,000 a year. Add to that the $70,000 a year we pay to Council for the lease on the carparks and Eumundi markets are a nice little earner for Council. From the lease payments a repair and maintenance fund ($23,000 for the Terraces and $30,000 for the carpark) is held by Council which can be

accessed by ECCO only with Council approval. Throw in the parking inspectors every Wednesday and Saturday and we are a tourism bonanza!!! Given all of these challenges we are planning to further develop our market space: A structure to carry solar panels - not a carport - architecturally designed to complement our markets; food court upgrade to look great on market days and return to Eumundi a town square. Plans to better identify the OEM to put our stamp on who we are and where we are. So, finally, to all of you who pitch your stalls with us on Wednesday and Saturdays, we know that many market days can be a challenge - are they buyers? Or are they lookers? We have total belief that with your passion for your product and with wise planning, good management, and appropriate promotion we’ll be celebrating 50 years of The Original Eumundi Markets in 2029!
Community Cont’d from pg 7 On this basis, Council met and discussed with directors of ECCO (including Donata Page), the funding needed to have those works undertaken and it was agreed that council and ECCO would enter into an agreement whereby those expenses were met on a 50/50 basis. The scope of works provided by ECCO for the upgrade to the Terraces totalled approximately $1.3 million. This agreement and expected cost was approved by both parties, the agreed commitment by council was $669,500 (excluding GST) which council understood from their discussions with ECCO at the time, as being one half of their costs for the upgrade works. Council passed a resolution to meet those costs and provided the funding to ECCO. ECCO submitted invoices on a regular basis, all of which have been paid by Council. From my investigations to date, the figure of $900,000 as identified by Donata Page as being ECCO’s contribution to the Terraces upgrade, is an amount that council has no verification of… at no time have I personally been made aware of this figure nor have I been a party to discussion around it. Nor had this amount, to my knowledge, been highlighted or mentioned to council officers prior to it being broadcasted last Saturday in a public arena. I can only presume that the speech was presented in such a way as to cause me and council public humiliation, for whatever personal reason that Donata had. Donata Page’s unwarranted attack was made in a way that was inappropriate and offensive
as council contributed its half as agreed. If the costs exceeded the agreed amount it is unjust to now attack council for any increased expenditure when council has kept to its end of the contract. It is wrong to suggest otherwise and to denigrate me and council as she did without having raised the issue of the increased expenditure by them – this shows clearly how she used this forum to portray me and council in an unfair and untruthful manner. I believe I have sustained continued attacks throughout my term as the elected Local Government representative of the Eumundi community, by a person who holds recognised positions of authority in Eumundi community organisations. I have provided this information to Council’s Chief Executive Officer for the purpose of further investigation given my perception of damage done to my and council’s reputation, by what Ms Page had to say in such a public forum. Finally, I would like to express to the entire Eumundi community that I have always endeavoured to carry out my elected representative role to the very best of my ability and will continue to do so. I also wish it noted that I have been approached by a number of individuals from within the Eumundi community who have expressed their concern not only around the contents of Ms Page’s attack upon me, but also of their own personal experiences. I would like to invite any concerned party to contact me directly should they wish to raise any further issues with me. Yours sincerely, Rogo!

Books FINDING THE NEXT BOOK

When it comes to tracking down the next book to read, it seems we’ve all got our own methods. For light reading, my partner goes to the library like a dowser getting signals as he walks through. He comes home with a stack and is happy if one turns out to be readable. Very eclectic! I tend to use a mix of methods: literary prize lists; recommendations from friends; trusted book store staff; literary sections of major newspapers; writer blogs, and other books by favourite authors. I always find something useful and interesting on Literary Hub (lithub.com) with articles about literature and politics from around the world, reviews and a weekly newsletter by email. What Should I Read Next lets you enter the name of an author or book and comes up with recommendations. Goodreads is a book centred social site where you can follow interesting people and what they read. Alltop gives lists of best book blogs. I haven’t used StumbleUpon or delicious but others say they help with finding obscure or specialist topic books. Project Gutenberg offers classic books in a huge range of topics - all available for free download. There is a vast range of free-to-download books available now. For various reasons, including supporting
local book stores, I don’t really use Amazon except for eBooks, but many like their recommendations. As you can see it’s possible to spend more time looking for books than reading them! I found my latest favourite, Galileo’s Middle Finger: Heretics, Activists, and the Search for Justice in Science, by Alice Dreger, recommended on an interest group I follow. After a year of reading mostly fiction, I dived into this one leaving my stack of unread fiction untouched. What a fascinating book! The title says it all. Through flawless documentation combined with humour and great story telling - the book reads like a thriller. Dreger, an expert in medical humanity and bioethics, builds a strong case that the
conflicts between evidencedbased truth and ideology which began with Galileo and others are still with us and just as dangerous, especially for those whose research leads them to conclusions unpopular with some social justice activists. Dreger adds her own story to others about the unethical lengths some will take to silence disagreement in universities. As a self-described activist and a medical researcher, she sees both sides and argues for a ‘”sustainable justice, which is impossible if we don’t know what’s true about the world. Science, with its insistence on

Mary River’s ‘punk rocker’ Foxes and feral animals have been given notice by Mary River landowners protecting one of the most endangered reptiles on the planet, a little turtle who often sports a green ‘mohawk’ of moss. The Mary River ‘Punk Rocker’ turtle, found only in the Mary River catchment, is extremely vulnerable to introduced predators such as wild dogs, foxes, feral pigs and feral cats, which prey on the turtles and their eggs. To protect turtle landowners, Landcare groups and four councils are rolling out the Mary River Turtle Protection Program. It’s a joint effort that involves reducing feral animal numbers, fencing the nesting banks to reduce cattle trampling and protecting the individual nests from predation.
Service station update Council has approved the development of a service station at the southern access to Memorial Drive, Eumundi. The building design must complement Eumundi’s heritage character and extensive landscaping on the verge, opposite the access driveway, is required to minimise street and headlight glare for Memorial Drive residents. As your councillor, with the best community interests in mind, I am exploring a left in / left out access from the Eumundi – Noosa Road that has the potential to improve the outcomes for all stakeholders.

Seib Road bridge Council continues to seek support for a new footbridge across the North Maroochy River, Eumundi to give walkers, cyclists and horse riders a safer alternative to the crossing on busy Eumundi – Noosa Road. Meanwhile, work draining and resurfacing the often impassable stretch between the north and south of Eumundi Conservation Park, is complete. Now, whatever the weather, horse riders, hikers and mountain bikers can access the full trail network.
Congratulations to everyone involved in the fabulous celebrations marking Eumundi Markets 40th anniversary. What a party! Eumundi and market go hand in glove. From the town’s early days, when the main street boasted general stores, butcher shops, a bakery, saddler, blacksmith and auctioneers, to 1979 when three people set up stalls in the CWA Hall turning over $30. Today 1.2 million visit the Eumundi Markets each year and Eumundi is still the place for food, craft beer, entertainment, art and the iconic, Eumundi Markets, every Wednesday from 8am-1.30pm and Saturday from 7am-2pm.

Kids N E W P L AY G R O U N D F O R E S S P R E P P I E S Sarah McDonagh, ESS Deputy Principal P – 2 Eumundi State School (ESS) Prep children are enjoying a new look to their playground area this year. Thanks to the support of the school’s P&C, new artificial grass has been installed across the entire play area to create a softer, cleaner and safer space for the children to play. The new grass replaces a surface that, in previous years, would quickly become dusty in dry and windy conditions, and pot-holey and muddy in wet weather. The Prep teaching team led by Tiffany McCarthy were instrumental in managing the surface design
and installation, and Derek (School’s Officer) was on hand to help the students plant out the new garden beds surrounding the play area. The new surface looks fantastic and our students are thoroughly enjoying it! As well as looking great, the surface is easier to maintain. In previous years, new turf would need to be laid regularly to cope with the busy kid’s traffic from the four prep classes. and is expected to be enjoyed by students for many years to come.

Health DRUG USE AND ADDICTION Tania Watson, Eumundi pharmacist Many of us can relate to craving a cup of coffee, or perhaps a sweet treat, when we know we shouldn’t. However, there is often a lot of misunderstanding when it comes to addiction and why people become addicted to certain substances. It is a common belief that people have low moral values and choose to involve themselves in often illicit behaviour. They believe that if they wanted to they could stop their behaviour and they could do so with will power alone. Addiction is a psychological and physical inability to stop consuming a chemical, drug, or other substance, or doing an activity, even though it is causing psychological and physical harm. The term addiction does not only refer to dependence on substances such as heroin or cocaine. A person who cannot stop taking a particular drug or chemical has a substance dependence. Some addictions also involve an inability to stop partaking in activities, such as gambling, eating or working. The initial decision to take drugs is voluntary for most people. However, repeated drug use can lead to brain changes that challenge an addicted person’s self-control and interferes with their ability to resist intense urges to take drugs. These brain changes can be persistent, which is why drug addiction is considered a ‘relapsing’ disease. When a person takes a drug, it can affect the brain’s ‘reward circuit’ by causing euphoria as well as flooding it with the chemical messenger dopamine. A properly functioning reward system motivates a person to repeat behaviours that allow us to thrive, such as eating and spending time with loved ones. Surges of dopamine in the reward circuit cause the reinforcement of pleasurable but often unhealthy behaviours like taking drugs, leading people to repeat the behaviour again and again. As a person continues to use drugs, the brain adapts by reducing the ability of cells in the reward circuit to respond to it. This reduces the high that the person feels compared to the
high they felt when first taking the drug. This is an effect known as tolerance and in some cases they may take more of the drug to try and achieve the same high. These brain adaptations often lead to the person becoming less and less able to derive pleasure from other things they once enjoyed; like food, sex, or social activities. Drug addiction is a chronic disease that is characterised by drug seeking and drug use that is compulsive and difficult to control, despite the harmful consequences. It is often complicated by the fact that the person may suffer from other mental health issues such as depression, anxiety or schizophrenia. These conditions may be the initial reason that people start taking substances, to improve their mood or their ability to cope with their mental condition. Stigma and discrimination are a common occurrence in the everyday lives of people living with a substance addiction. Most people who struggle with an addictive disorder will fail to seek treatment in part because of their concern that they will be labelled an addict. Often the medical profession fails to treat addicts properly as many health professionals do not want to ‘deal’ with these types of patients. Even among people who use drugs, stigma toward other people who use drugs can be common. People who use socially acceptable drugs such as alcohol, may have negative Cont’d on pg 18

The Midyim Berry (Austromyrtus dulcis) bush is fruiting at the Eumundi Sunken Garden at the moment. The Sunshine Coast has a diverse flora with over 1600 species (including fungi). Many plants are useful in some way eg. for materials, medicinal or some are edible. CAUTION! Never eat a plant or fungi without knowing first whether or not it is safe to eat. Some of the Sunshine Coast’s edible natives are very well known. For example, the Bunya Pine (Araucaria bidwillii), and the Macadamia Nut (Macadamia integrifolia). The beautifully aromatic leaves of the Lemon Myrtle (Backhousia citriodora (myrtifolia) are also very well known, especially as a cup of refreshing tea.

Native vines comprise: Millaa Millaa vine (Elaegnus triflora); Apple Berry (Billardiera scandens); and - with its edible tuber - the native yam (Dioscorea transversa); Warrigal Greens (Tetragonia tetragonioides) which grows on sand dunes and can be cooked and eaten like spinach. There are many more of course but these are some of the more well known natives you might want to try planting in your garden and working into your meals. At the Eumundi Sunken Garden we have started planting some edible bush tucker plants. Our beautiful Midyim berries are fruiting at the moment (see below).
Then there’s also the tree species with edible fruits that can be eaten raw or made into jam. Perhaps you’ve tried: the Native Tamarind (Diploglottis australis); the Lilli Pilli’s (Syzygium sp.); Sandpaper Eumundi Bushcare Group is getting smaller so we’re putting the call out for new recruits! We understand that everyone is busy, but if we don’t maintain a good number of volunteers, we may have to shut down our Eumundi Bushcare caretaking - Nooooo! Please, even if you can turn up to a couple of working bees that would be fantastic.
