After a few weeks of rain the hinterland is looking more like itself. The sound of lawn mowers of an afternoon and frogs at night, can be heard reverberating across the region once again. Walking through the bush in the early morning after one of the downpours, the red gums glow such a beautiful, warm pink. I visited a local farm last week that had to sacrifice a crop of flowers for Valentine’s Day due to lack of water (page 8). I’m running into a lot of tired people who are powering through life on full throttle at the moment – and it’s only February. I think we might need a weekend of relaxing? Perhaps a quiet weekend at home? Or an early morning trip to the beach, or a bushwalk, or gardening, a long lunch with friends and an even longer afternoon on the veranda staring at the sunset… can I decree this for the community please?

Business N E W E AT S F O R O L D E U M U N D I FAV O U R I T E When Eumundi business woman Katie Johnston saw the Fig Tree Café was for sale and heard of the connection people had with its earlier incarnation as Eats, she was besotted. “It took about six months of observing trade to make the decision” but then she said they stripped the entire place, including the kitchen, and replaced it with new equipment with seven weeks. “We had to freshen up everything as every

single inch of the place needed attention.” Katie shared that the response since reopening as Eats has been amazing. “Everyone is loving the space, the menu and the friendly staff - we’ve been overwhelmed with positive feedback,” she said. Katie shared she was drawn to move to her pole home in the Eumundi tree canopy five years ago because everyone is so friendly and open minded here. “I knew people would be happy to see this restaurant in the center of Eumundi,

have a breathe of fresh air injected into it. The space has a huge amount of market exposure so we wanted to do Eumundi proud and put our best foot forward,” she explained. Katie’s background is as an investor. “I see business potential and I set up teams to run it. I’m super grateful at how easy it was to find such amazing staff, I think it is a reflection of how awesome people in the area are,” she said. Katie shared Eats busiest days are definitely market days and loves seeing the place so vibrant and busy. “The other days are lovely as we get to see people really relax and enjoy the space. Often people who are considering returning to work after a prolonged break; like raising a family, suffering a personal illness or looking after elderly parents, can find it daunting. The thought of re-entering the workforce for some is a combination of fear, trepidation and lack of confidence and can prevent them from taking the first step. It is so common it even has a name Return to Work Syndrome. If you want to return to work the following are some practical steps that may be useful.

You’d think Valentine’s Day is big on the calendar for flower farmers, but Eumundi Roses had to kiss their rose crop goodbye last week due to lack of rain in the lead up to the season. Flower farmer Lyn explained that she and her Dad Graeme Etheridge had to sacrifice the roses and put their resources into growing and prepping for the biggest flower day of the year – Mothers Day. Lyn explained that November is actually rose season and the plants have to be ‘tricked’ to grow out of season. The biggest problem growing roses in south east Queensland for Valentine’s this year has been the lack of rain. Eumundi Roses had to choose which crops would get the precious water supply and hand care. “If we don’t have all of our roses and other flowers

well watered and growing in by Valentines, then we miss the whole Mothers Day growth season – and that’s our biggest season,” Lyn explained. Graeme Etheridge has been a flower grower for 20 years and was only recently joined by his daughter Lyn on the property. “The farm was getting to a point where it was too much work just for Dad, it was pretty run down and the florists were saying, ‘Graeme this isn’t good enough’,” Lyn explained. “And it was a time when we said, ‘Okay, we’re going to have to make some decisions here,’ as I’d just had a car accident and couldn’t do my upholstery work and it was just a case of Dad needed a hand – I needed a hand – why don’t we pool together and we’ll give it a go?” Lyn shared. The family started the big job of cleaning up the fields, but found the weeds impossible to tame. “Weeds are our biggest challenge in Queensland, they love the humidity, and we try to grow spray free,” Lyn explained. So they have decided to focus on the polyhouses for now. “I was a big believer that roses grow better outside and respond to rain – they flush when it rains – but what I’ve learnt is in polyhouses they still respond to the rain! It’s the humidity in the air that they

Community Eumundi Roses doesn’t just grow roses now but has diversified into other popular breeds too so they always have a crop in season to sell. This time of year, in the lead up to Valentine’s, the lycianthus and dahlias were in full bloom. They were then hand-cut the night before and sold at market.

Lyn shared that she and her dad Graeme have big ideas for the farm - once they tame the weeds! And at this stage the family is spending money to make money with everything going back into the farm. “We’ve invested in cages to make the flowers grow straight because for customers everything has got to be perfect,” Lyn explained.

Lyn said the farm was struggling to find wholesalers because of the huge volume of cheap imports. “We went to a wholesaler to extend our sales but had to sell at cost to compete with the imports, so it didn’t work,” she explained.

“It’s so hard for farmers; fruit farmers, veg farmers, flower farmers – we’re all throwing out at least 50% of our product because it’s not perfect – a stem with a bend, a petal a grasshopper ate – not perfect enough.”

“They showed us a container of crysathimums that had been on a ship for a month – temperature and ethylene controlled in the containers – so when those flowers came out they were perfect,” she said.

“Florists are going to the imports and wholesalers go overseas because it’s cheaper,” she mused.

love – as do those weeds!”

Lyn said she couldn’t tell the difference between her flowers and the imports but when she took them home and popped them both in a vase, the imports died quickly while her home grown flowers lasted three plus weeks. “They looked identical but the month old flower that’s been in storage catches up when it hit the open air – they’re not long lasting,” Lyn explained.

Lyn believes markets and farm doors are the future. The customer gets freshly cut flowers straight from the plant to somebody’s vase. Plus they last longer so it’s a win – win. And what does Lyn see for this Eumundi farm’s future? “I can see it – there’s a picture in my head – we’ve got a local wholesaler now and we’ve got our loyal market customers and brides who buy from us direct, and now we have our beds and frames set up… we’re ready for a great future.”

The lycianthus flowers in full bloom the day before Valentines Day. The 800 stems were cut the night before the markets. 9

Arts NEW ADDITION TO SCULPTURAL LANDSCAPE

A RT N E WS

There has been a new addition recently to the sculptural landscape of Eumundi. Without any pomp or ceremony, Eumundi & District Historical Association (EHA) recently commissioned the striking sculpture to commemorate Australia’s Centenary of Armistice. This second piece from Bribie Island artist Meg Geer is intended to compliment her 2016 Eumundi Sculpture Prize winning artwork Spirit Orb which is already installed at the amphitheatre. The Green asked EHA Chair Donata Page and EHA Board member Michael Carney, a little more about the commission which adds to Eumundi’s artistic reputation. Why is there a new sculpture in the amphitheatre? EHA decided to commission a work to commemorate the Centenary of Armistice to complement the Spirit Orb which commemorated the Centenary of the Anzac Landing at Gallipoli. Cont’d on pg 12

Casual life drawing classes with art teacher Zoe Martin start back on Thur 31 Jan, 10.30am, The Bunker in the Imperial Hotel, 1 Etheridge St, Eumundi. This is an open, relaxed class with all skill levels welcome. BYO art materials & paper. Easels and boards provided. $20 per class. Mudputty.com.

Australian Wearable Art are asking for expressions

of interest for the event to be held on 24 May in Eumundi. You don’t have to have something half made or finished at this stage, just the idea, the materials and knowing you can complete your vision. For more information and categories head to australianwearableart. com.au

Expressions of interest are now invited for the 2019 Floating Land creative exhibition. Conceived in 2001 as a biennial outdoor sculptural program, this year’s Floating Land: point to point will have a presence across two key anchor sites – Boreen Point and Noosa National Park. Applications close Sun 10 Mar. Expressions of interest forms available at noosaregionalgallery.com.au/ floating-land-eoi.

EUMUNDI ARTIST SHARES LANDSCAPE TECHNIQUES Join Eumundi artist Amy Clarke for her free artist floor talk entitled Painting the Landscape Using Memory, Intuition and Colour on Tuesday 26 February at Noosa Regional Gallery, 10.30 -11.30am. Amy Clarke’s abstract landscape paintings draw largely on memory. She explained that she enjoys travelling into nature and often does small works on paper in situ. “In the studio I draw on the memories and

feeling of being in the landscape to create larger works,” she shared. Amy will talk about her process and how she is constantly challenging herself to trust her mark making as she intuitively moves the paint around to capture emotion and a sense of place. Colour also plays a significant role in bringing her works to life.

Arts Cont’d from pg 11 Who was the artist? Meg Geer who won the Eumundi Sculpture Prize 2016 with the Spirit Orb was the most appropriate person to ask for a complementary work. After some reflection she agreed to take on the commission. What does it represent? Meg has provided the following statement about her work [entitled] For You.... I wanted to create a work that spoke directly to the Spirit Orb but didn’t replicate the meaning. Usually war memorials are very sombre, commemorating the lives of those who were lost. After creating a few ideas in this vein, I really started to think about what do I want to say with this work. What is it that I think about when I attend memorial services, what did these fallen soldiers do, and how has it impacted my life? If one of the soldiers or nurses was standing in front of me right now, what would I say? My generation is probably one of the first, in Australia at least, who have not directly experienced war in a local, daily-

living way. Our sons, boyfriends and husbands are not being drafted, bombs are not being dropped on our workplaces. We live in a comparatively safe country, where our freedoms are respected. Those we know who have been to war have passed on or don’t talk about it much. The memory of the horrors of war are not strong in my and my daughter’s psyche and it fades even more with each generation born into this lucky country. Thinking over these things made me feel like a child who can see that the adults are sad and wants to do something to help them feel better. To let them know they are appreciated. That was how the idea for the Poppy Girl was born. It is me, it is all of us, those whom the past generations were fighting for, in all our child-like innocence, simply holding up a flower to say thank you - We are filled with gratitude for the peaceful life we lead and we know things could have been different if you didn’t fight for those freedoms. We see you and we thank you.

proudly, hair blowing in the wind, conjuring up the feeling of joy and freedom we are blessed to enjoy and the joy people must have felt when the armistice was announced 100 years ago. She is the child they were fighting for; she is all of us.”

What does this sculpture mean to you? And what does it add to the town? That is for each of us to decide.

How much did it cost? The value of an artwork cannot be measured by what it cost. It can only be valued by what it means to each of us. Meg’s statement should provoke us to think about her words and how the work inspires us. Was this in lieu of the Sculpture Prize? No Will this be on ongoing commission in future years? The future of the Eumundi Sculpture Prize and potential commissions by the Eumundi Historical Association will depend on a range of factors and foremost is the willingness of

Eumundi and District Pony Club is a small pony club that’s actually in Doonan. The club holds monthly Musters where our members all come together with their horses at our beautiful grounds to ride, hold interactive group lessons, and help each other further their equine education and talents. These musters help our riders and their horses get more experience under saddle in a supportive and fun environment, before they head out into the competitive world. On weekends members travel around Queensland to compete in a range of equestrian discipline’s proudly wearing their Eumundi uniforms. Our club is run by a brilliant and hardworking committee that supports our younger generations coming up through the ranks. At 23 year’s old I’m proud to be the 2018/ 19 Eumundi Pony Club President. Eumundi Pony Club’s supportive Chief Instructor is 22 year old Jesse Falconer. She volunteers her time to come up with the muster schedule and lesson plans. Both Katt and Jesse are extremely committed to the club and to supporting Eumundi members in their equestrian fields. Our committee members are; Sharon Falconer, Amanda Noye, Cheiran Chadburn, Maree Aversa.

Standardbred, Echelon Trooper, competed in the 13 – 26years, 70 - 90cm, also against 35 other local riders. Although no placings, Lily went home with a smile after her first ever competition with her horse.

Recently on 2 and 3 February, a few of our talented riders represented the club proudly at the Official Nambour Pony Club Show Jumping Competition. Leilah Chadburn and her Paint Gelding, Another One Bites the Dust, competed in the 13 – 26yrs, 70 – 90cm class, against 35 riders and came home with 8th place! An awesome result for the first competition of the year.

It was a half day muster finishing up at 12pm to allow our members time to head home and prepare their horses for the Tewantin Noosa Hack Day on Sunday afternoon at Tewantin Noosa Pony Club . A number of our riders and committee members attended this hack day as it is another great warm up competition before the big ones get underway.

Health WOMEN’S CIRCLE Being new in a town can be isolating, even when it is an inclusive and ever-friendly town like our dear Eumundi. Even if you have lived in this community for years, it’s easy to feel isolated and finding the time and place to connect with other locals can sometimes feel impossible. Social interactions are often limited to a brief wave of the hand at the school gate, or as we hurry to work. We all need someone we can hold a space with, and I have realised lately that there are so many of us that live here away from our birth families and old support circles. I found myself often wishing I had a group of women (and men) to just let my guard down around. I wanted to find my new community and be in their presence without feeling judgement or expectation. So instead of just wishing to find this group I’ve decided to create it. For the last few months, myself and a friend have rented a gorgeous space at Secrets from the Honey Tree on the first

Friday of every month. We have thrown open the doors each time, to greet whoever wants to come and join us in a supportive environment of likeminded spiritual gangsters (or not so spiritual) - all are welcome! Each month we have a different theme to kickstart the conversation. But the reason behind the gathering stays the same - provide our community with a place to: be quiet, or noisy; to laugh, or to cry; to share, or be silent. Some nights we end up just sharing, others have a guided meditation or a healing. There are no expectations, but we hope people go home feeling nurtured and acknowledged. If you’ve been looking to meet and connect with new friends - or just yearn to be in a sacred space where everything stays in the room - please feel free to join us on the first Friday of every month at Secrets from the Honey

T he adventures of ziggy the piglet – using social media to find your missing pet

Eumundi Bushcare Group are holding their first meeting for 2019 on Sunday 24 February at the Sunken Garden, Pacey St, Eumundi, at 8.30am. The working bee finishes at 10.30am wih a cuppa and sometimes homemade goodies to share. Bushcare sessions are on the fourth Sunday of the month. The group weed, manage tree plantings, learn new things and chat. Facebook: eumundi bushcare group. Cooroy Community Gardens meet every Sunday from 7-9.30am. Their next meeting will be held on Sunday 24 February 5447 6278.

In early January we rescued two little malnourished piglets from a site in Brisbane. We named them Ziggy (the sow) and Hoover (the boar). Recently, Ziggy escaped her enclosure and decided to go on a little adventure and ended up 15km away! I take full responsibility for Ziggy’s escape as I hadn’t shut the enclosure gate properly … lesson learnt! A small gap meant that Ziggy squeezed through and entered the big wide world of exploring and digging up my garden. Within the space of two hours she had made her way across the road to my neighbour, who she had recently taken a liking to as she had been coming over and feeding her lunch while I was away for a week. Several hours after their breakfast feed we realised Ziggy was missing. I have a love hate relationship with social media, but there are some huge advantages, especially when it comes to finding a missing pet. I created a post about Ziggy and that she was last seen at 8.45am that morning outside my neighbours. I shared it with local community noticeboards on Facebook and the Sunshine Coast Lost Pet Register. There’s nothing like a cute piglet picture to get noticed and it

began to get shared around. At 3.30pm I had a phone call from someone who knew who had Ziggy! Fortunately, Ziggy was picked up by a family and taken back to their Doonan property and spoilt for the day. She was even going to go away with them for the weekend! With little Hoover pining for his sister we quickly drove to Doonan and brought her back, even though she would have been very happy to stay where she was. If you ever lose your pet there are ways you can use social media to help bring them home. Write up a post with the tile in capitals MISSING PET. Include your pets name and a recent photo. Share your post with as many pages as you can and ask that people share it. List your pet with the Sunshine Coast Lost Pet Register on Facebook and also contact all of the local vets. If you find someone’s pet you can search these places and notify local vets. animalfarmsunshinecoast.com

N atu re N otes GOLDEN ORBS

HINTERLAND WEEKEND: THE SURPRISE OVER THE FENCE Leila Robertson, Year 3 (2018), ESS Ignite English

Babette Urban, Eumundi

Putting on my boots, I prepare myself for a fun backyard adventure. I climb over the silver fence as my sister lifts the wire so my hair does not get caught. Running down the steep hill the grass gives me a tickly sensation. The cool air chills my face. Breathless, I come to a stop as I arrive at the bottom of the hill. This is where the adventure begins.

Whether you are a spider lover or detest them, it is hard not to be impressed with the large, golden webs stretched across open spaces between our trees. These magnificent structures are built by the female golden orb weaver, who inhabits the web alone with multiple hopeful males taking their place around the edges. The males are tiny in comparison, around 6mm, and orange in colour. The rich, yellow web, which is semi-permanent, is woven incorporating dead, organic matter as odour is used to attract the prey; namely blowflies, beetles, locusts, wood moths, cicadas and other insects. When a web is damaged the spider eats all the threads to recycle the proteins into new, raw silk material. Mating occurs from February to May, with the males carefully

awaiting a mating opportunity. They interact aggressively with one another as the larger individuals prevent their smaller rivals from accessing the female. Mating is a dangerous process for the male as he is at risk of being eaten by the female, but being alert and agile is often enough to prevent him from becoming a meal. His best strategy is to wait until the female has caught her prey and is busy with eating. He will test her concentration by plucking at the web, and if she remains focused on her meal then he will crawl onto her back to mate. The female wraps her single egg sac, containing up to 380 large yolky eggs, in a mass of golden silk and hides it away from the web, perhaps in a curled leaf or sprig of twigs. Golden orb spiders only live a year, with the adults dying after they have mated and laid their eggs.

DOONAN SEND SUPPORT Doonan Rural Fire Brigade sent two appliances to assist with the clean-up in Townsville after the recent devastating floods with more crews to be deployed over the coming weeks. Henk and John (pictured) were part of the first team to head North. Facebook: Doonan Rural Fire Brigade.

My sister and I slowly creep down the next steep descent using the trees to balance ourselves, while taking care not to be poked by their protruding branches. When we reach the bottom of the descent, we enter the rainforest with swinging vines connected to the towering mossy trees. The birds sing sweet songs. The everlasting stream ripples and bubbles over its rocky bed. The soft trickling sound relaxes us making me realise how lucky I am to have this so close to my home. My sister and I construct a wooden bridge from sticks to walk across the thin stream. I step onto the wobbly bridge but it starts to crack. Splash! I fall into the refreshing water. My ears are filled with my sister’s laughter,

she immediately stops when she steps into a large puddle of sinking mud. Suddenly, without a warning it starts bucketing down cold wet raindrops. The umbrella like leaves save the day, but not for long as the determined raindrops slowly leak through. We race up the tiring hill and use the large trees as a guide to a safe passage home. Soon I am comfortable and warm back inside my home following my adventure in my hinterland backyard.

Maltese dog. He was very hot with no collar and looked bedraggled and smelt extremely bad. Gave him a drink and sat him in the air con to cool him down. I then sought advice from our local RSPCA who instructed me to take him to the local vet to see if he was microchipped. Took him to the Eumundi Vet on Range Rd where he was scanned, but unfortunately he had no microchip. Luckily a young receptionist said she recalled seeing a post on Facebook about a missing dog that looked just like the one I had brought in. It turned out to be the same little dog that had been missing for some time. His name is Toby. The owners were called to be informed that their little dog had been found. Toby was reunited

WHY DOES THE WA L K S T O P ? On a market day last month we parked our car down near the bridge on Eumundi Range Rd. There appeared to be an attractive path up the hill. We decided a walk after ample market food was in order, so off we set. We enjoyed the walk very much until the paved path abruptly stopped! Disappointed it didn’t lead us anywhere (not even to a seat) the wife and I headed back. Then, driving back that way, we saw there was actually a great lookout at
