Notes Hinterland note ...

R A I S E F U N D S B Y C A R PA R K I N G

Last week I visited the Eumundi Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre (EWRC) to check out their new koala enclosure [see page 16]. There have been more koala sightings in our trees lately, which we all love seeing, but unfortunately this translates to more koalas being taken in to EWRC with serious injuries from cars and dogs. We humans may love seeing koalas on our properties but we’re not very good for their quality of life. We’re putting all this effort into creating marsupial friendly habitats by establishing bush corridors and planting natives, but we continue to encroach on their habitat as we pack more people into the region.

The Eumundi Markets carpark is inviting local groups to join the carparking roster. This is an opportunity to raise funds for your community group or not-for-profit in exchange for market carparking. There are currently four shifts available in 2019 on both Wednesdays and Saturdays. Groups are reimbursed for their time via way of direct donation to their community group. All enquiries to manager Richard Thurbon carparking@eumundicco.com.au

In an effort to cut costs we unfortunately can’t afford to hand deliver the Green to as many letterboxes throughout the 4562 region. It was often hit and miss too as to which streets would get a Green and which ones wouldn’t. We’ve endeavoured to establish more pickup points though [see page 4]. But we are still in need of a central pickup point in Weyba and North Arm. If you live centrally in either area and would be happy to have a waterproof Green magazine stand next to your letterbox please email editor@eumundigreen.com.au.

Less than 18 months after officially opening, the brewing team at the Eumundi Brewery has a nice problem on their hands. Eumundi beer has been so well received across the Coast that they have now engaged extra brewing support to keep up with demand. Head Brewer Chris Sheehan said there’s been an amazing demand for the Lager from restaurants, pubs and clubs across the Coast. “It is incredibly rewarding knowing that the revival of our Brewery has been so warmly welcomed,” he said. Chris explained the brewers can’t get enough lager out of the Eumundi Brewery to keep up with demand so has decided to partner with the Malt Shovel Brewery to assist with production. Chris has confidently orchestrated the arrangement because he served as Head Brewer for James Squire and Malt Shovel Brewery for a number of years before coming to Eumundi Brewery. “We’ll still run the brewery here at full swing, with support from the team at Malt Shovel Brewery,” he said. 6

{ T H E G R E E N 6 February 2019

“Knowing the system down there, we’ll match every aspect of the beer using the same recipe, flavour, love and care that it is made with in Eumundi,” he explained. With the increase in keg production and launch of bottles later this month, Chris is keen to expand distribution. “The beer is already popping up in Brisbane and other parts of Queensland. Time to go wider! One day, I honestly hope it is available Australia wide,” Chris said.

Community EUMUNDI POLICE UPDATE Sgt Ryan Hanlon, Eumundi Police 5442 8222 Firstly, I would like to introduce myself to the community of Eumundi and the surrounding townships. My name is Ryan Hanlon and I am the new Sergeant, Officer in Charge of Eumundi Police Station. I have been a police officer since I was 21 and for the last 20 years have travelled around the State to areas that include Mount Isa, Doomadgee, Normanton, Whitsundays, North Stradbroke Island, Rockhampton, Longreach and Bribie Island. For the last four years I was the Officer in Charge of Woodford Police station. I’m only in my first couple of weeks at Eumundi but if at any stage someone from the community needs to get into contact with me, the best way to do so (due to shift work) is by emailing me on Hanlon. RyanP@police.qld.gov.au to arrange an appointment. Police report For the school holiday/summer period of 18 December – 23 January, the police statistics for our division that I’m able to share with you are as follows: We have had six burglary/enter premises offences, seven drunk

drivers, 12 drug possessions and a drug produce. There were also seven drivers under the influence of drugs, one motor vehicle stolen, seven traffic crashes, as well as 17 stealing offences which include fuel drive-offs over that time. There have also been 123 speeding tickets issued by the Road Policing Unit within the Eumundi Division in relation to speeding motorists with the majority being 15kms and over the speed limit. Eumundi also caught two female offenders from NSW committing fraud offences around the South East from Gold Coast to the Sunny Coast. They were travelling in a stolen Winnebago worth over $100, 000 when caught and attempted to flee on the wrong side of the M1 highway. They fled into bushland where they were apprehended. So, Eumundi has been an interesting start! I look forward to regular articles in the Eumundi Green as I believe it is important to keep the community informed. Until next article!

Happy New Year! I hope you had the chance to relax and enjoy some quality time with friends and family. Congratulations to those whose efforts and achievements were recognised with an Australia Day award, as well as those residents who took the opportunity to become citizens.

With school back in full swing it’s also a busy time for many local clubs and sports clubs who are preparing for a new season, hosting registration and sign on days. From AFL, soccer, league, hockey, netball, basketball and golf, just to mention a few, you’ll find a club or group in our local region for just about every interest. Some families may be eligible for a Get Started Voucher. These vouchers provide up to $150 for eligible children and young people to help pay for sport or recreation club membership and/or participation fees through registered clubs. The next round opens on 6 February, so jump online and

check your eligibility or apply at qld.gov.au/recreation/ sports/funding/getinthegame/ getstarted/apply#how. If you are a member of a club that is in need of a new marquee, I am currently taking applications for the next round of the Ninderry Community Marquee sponsorship program, which closes at the end of this month. These 3m x 3m marquees come personalised with your club logo, are light, compact and easy to transport, and are a great way to provide shade at your next event or fundraiser. There’s only a limited number available though, so give me a call on 54067900 for more information. If you miss out, I also have a few marquees available for loan.

The Original Eumundi markets celebrated the life of resident market busker Doug Andreassen on Saturday 26 January – one year to the day that he died. A memorial stone was laid in the garden behind the seat where he busked with his close mate Ellis Minter. Doug’s daughter Lynette shared there was only one thing he enjoyed more than telling a good joke and making people laugh, and that was singing and entertaining others and having a chat. He found his niche when he began busking at the Markets in 1982.

Speaking of clubs, the next round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (Round 100) closes at the end of this month, on 28 February. gamblingcommunityfund.qld. gov.au. Doug (left) and Ellis entertaining visitors at the market. 8

Health EXERCISES TO IMPROVE MOBILITY – MOVEMENT O V E R E Q U I P M E N T Brooke Conlan, Personal Trainer Eumundi As a personal trainer I’m often asked what the best exercises are for the goal they want to achieve and what equipment do they need to perform their exercises in order to reach their desired outcome? Firstly, when it comes to exercise, movement always precedes equipment – always. Movement patterns, correct muscle engagement and technique need to be fully established before any type of weights or resistance training takes place. There is higher risk of injury if the fundamentals are not set in place first. So good news is you can use your own body weight to build strength, co-ordination, balance and mobility! My all time favourite exercise is the bear crawl. Bear crawls are one of the most beneficial exercises a person can do. Why? They’re one of the only exercises that engage all muscle groups and joints. The body works as an integrated system and not as

parts, so this exercise improves mobility throughout the entire body. Bear crawls can be used as a warm up or cool down drill, or as a high intensity yet low impact workout. As a four-point contact move, it’s great for injury prevention and of course it was how we were born to move. Humans have slowly fallen victim to tight muscles with no mobility throughout our bodies due to sitting at desks and only moving in set planes when we train.

Mobility exercises like this should also be performed in between sets of weights to improve range of movement through joints being worked. For a healthy body that moves freely, incorporate bear crawls into your day - every single day.

Heri tage E A R LY D AY S O F E U M U N D I F I R E B R I G A D E Wendy Birrell, Discover Eumundi manager In 1967 a meeting conducted at the Eumundi CWA Hall identified a pressing need for a local brigade as Eumundi consisted mostly of timber buildings. There was also a dangerous shortage of water with frequent fires destroying homes, buildings, machinery, timber and grass. Arthur Vonhoff (pictured right), was the first chairman of the then named Eumundi Bush Fire Brigade. As the Eumundi community policeman, he put a lot of time and effort into policing his area. This included patrolling the highway when it still ran up the range heading towards Cooroy and Eumundi Locals recount stories of Arthur’s firm but fair treatment of drivers doing the wrong thing on the Bruce Highway. Meetings were held once a year in the CWA hall until 1979, when they became quarterly. Much of the Brigade’s coordination was run through private homes and the police station. Locals helped support the brigade and each other by back burning and beating out the flames where possible. The volunteer fire fighters initially used water-soaked hessian bags for putting out fires. Arthur then initiated the use of iron knap-sacks, strapped on their backs, full of water to be sprayed out by a hand-held nozzle. At a meeting held in Joe’s Waterhole in February 1993 the Brigade decided to buy their first fire truck, a Mazda T2500. It finally arrived in December the same year. After this, the brigade quickly gathered momentum as the vehicle attracted new volunteers.

Arthur was chairman of the Brigade on a milestone occasion, the official opening of the new station in Napier Rd, by the Mayor of Maroochy Shire Council, Cr Don Culley on 2 August 1997. Money collected by the brigade volunteers from parking fees at Saturday markets and the Maroochy Fire Levy, ensured that the new station was free of debt. Arthur died recently on 9 January and will be remembered as an exceptionally communityminded member of the Eumundi area. He also spent many years on the Eumundi School P&C Committee and helped set up the Valdora Brigade.

Enter now for major national art prize Eagerly sprinting towards the beautiful coast, I spy the awesome beach surf. Reaching the beach, adorable crabs scurry sideways. The sapphire blue sea glimmers like stars shining on a pitch black night. Speechlessly I watch and enjoy this astonishing sight. The summer day is scorching, so the cool ocean water refreshes me. Swimming to the sandbank further on, I check to see I am still between the red and yellow flags. As I turn to look out to sea I spot a goliath wave. I try to catch it but I just do a front flip and receive a mouthful of saltwater for my efforts. More mountainous waves come and the more I catch the better I get. The sets of waves calm, however, there is one huge wave building. I catch it! My head is in the eye of the wave as it spins

around getting smaller and smaller as it travels towards the beach and then dissolves. My face is now covered in soggy sand as I slowly wade through the water back to the sandbank to continue to enjoy my ocean swim.

Nationwide entries are now being sought for the prestigious Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2019, with a major acquisitive prize of $25,000. The Award is open to any artist who is an Australian resident, working in a 2D medium. Entries close on 8 April. Visit council’s gallery website for details.

I look downwards through the crystal clear water only to see silver fish darting through the water. I just hope there are not any sharks around here hungry for a feed of silver fish. I am distracted by another mammoth wave approaching. I swim back to where I can stand. The wave roars as it consumes me in one huge gulp. I soon discover myself upon the shore. Looking up, my parents beckon me, as unfortunately it is time to depart home. Luckily it is not a long drive to my hinterland home and I will be back at the beach soon.

Outdoors NEWS FROM THE WILDLIFE CENTRE New koala facility at EWRC After two years in planning with Council, the Eumundi Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre (EWRC) is building its new koala enclosure, with the expectation it will be fully operational in about four weeks. The facility can then provide separate care for up to 12 injured animals. EWRC manager Vicki Toomey explained the Centre has at least one koala brought in weekly and more koalas are being spotted in this hinterland region recently. Vicki explained the facility may also be utilised, as needed, for other marsupials. “The plan is never to keep that many koalas on sight, but it can fill quite quickly,” she explained. Most hinterland koalas are injured by dogs or cars. When a koala receives serious trauma Vicki explained that it’s very important the injured animal gets urgent monitoring and is tested straight away. “If it’s an urgent, life threatening injury, or our vet isn’t on site, then the koala is sent straight on to Australia Zoo as they can offer the best care,” she said. Koalas in need of 24 hour medical attention are also sent on to the main Wacol

RSPCA wildlife campus. “But ultimately, Wacol facilities aren’t tailored for the koalas because they have so many dogs and cat smells there – the enclosures are sound proof but that doesn’t give the animals the sunshine and the natural environment that they need to heal,” Vicki explained. Once the koalas are stable, or have had their legs fractured, they are sent to EWRC to learn to climb again before they go back out into the wild. Once the new facility is completed, Vicki said EWRC will be able to provide the Koalas with nurse monitoring and fresh leaves, before being sent out for release. “There are a lot more koalas coming into care needing single cages than even Australia Zoo can house, so our facility will compliment them and Wacol - and we can work to keep the northern koalas up here,” she enthused.

grow bigger and gain climbing practice before being returned into the wild,” Vicki explained. “Koalas need a couple of weeks climbing practice after an injury, but if they’re a juvenile that has been raised in care and needing to be out in the open learning to forage for themselves, they may be with us for several months,” Vicki said. A big part of the rehabilitation is koalas becoming desensitised to humans again. “They need to not know we provide the food for them, they need to learn to not approach humans, so part of that is being out in a big, wide open space, learning trees provide shade and safety and not that we have anything to do with cuddles or food,” she shared. “It’s really important that they know their place and don’t see us as providing any sort of comfort,” Vicki explained.

If you see a koala on your property that you think may have an injury or seems sick, Vicki encourages locals to give EWRC or Australia Zoo a call. “We can talk you through a process of whether the animal is healthy and still moving between feeding resources – and that’s great; we always want those encounters where we don’t have to intervene but keep an animal under surveillance – but it may be something we may be able to point out such as, does it have a dirty bottom or weepy eyes,” Vicki said. “We will then do health checks on those animals that may be not quite so well,” she explained. Currently there are three females free-ranging between the EWRC’s two fenced outdoor enclosures. “One is rehabilitating from a car injury which it had surgery for at Wacol, the other two are orphaned juveniles that need to

Natu re No tes Ph otos I’ve been inspired by Gale from Bee’s and Honey in Eumundi - after many visits to her shop - to dive into bee keeping. I’ve noticed some amazing little bees in my garden at home that have gone unnoticed for quite a few years. I’ve managed to photograph one in particular and would like to share it with the local community. They’re an amazing little creature and so important to the environment and I feel this photo may encourage more locals to take an interest and begin preserving and protecting the species. EUMUNDI BUSHCARE GROUP Amber Grimley, Eumundi

Hello everybody. Eumundi Bushcare Group will be back in action from Sunday 24 February. Our bushcare sessions are on the fourth Sunday of the month and start at 8.30am. We weed, manage tree plantings, learn new things and chat. Then at 10.30am we gather around for a cuppa and sometimes homemade goodies to share. Eumundi Bushcare Group (EBG) is supported by the Sunshine Coast Council through their Community Nature Conservation Program. This program supports the community to conserve and restore bushland in Council’s environment reserves. You can learn valuable skills and meet new people and help keep our community healthy and village beautiful!

Up to date EBG have been working in Eumundi’s Sunken Garden. We have removed many weed species both big and small, and planted many natives. We would like to keep going in this little spot, however there are a few other spots in Eumundi of interest too. For example near the new Eumundi Range Rd bridge along the North Maroochy River. If you have any areas in mind please join us at our next working bee in February, everyone is welcome.

At our last meeting the Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade dedicated the new appliance (truck) to our longest serving member and honourable gentleman, John Kennedy (centre). John, (along with his supportive wife Anne), have been with the brigade in excess of 15 years and have been one of its most loyal and hardest working members. John has, for the most part, now resigned from the active part of the brigade, however we have refused to let him resign officially.

Following hot on the heels of recent $3m plus sales, Kess Prior and Graham Smith from Hinternoosa have just secured the sale of Cloud Ridge at Tunba Court, Cooroy Mountain. For sale at over $4.6m, this previous Australian House of the Year exhibits high class, high tech and the buyers deemed it highly desirable! Kess, who was instrumental in formulating the marketing campaign for the property commented that “Cloud Ridge is a residence where the elusive ‘work/life balance’ transforms from cliché to your everyday reality”. The buyers are from Victoria and also have other property holdings in the hinterland. During 2018 the hinterland market at the ‘prestige’ level saw a significant resurgence. In 2017 the top priced sale was $2.7m for a magnificent home at Cooroy Mountain and in 2018 there were a number of sales over $3m. Sanquahar on Sunrise Rd sold early in the year for $3.1m followed a few months later by the sale of Saana, also on Sunrise Rd for $3.25m. More recently Cintimani was sold for $4.25m, Eagles Nest in Dath Henderson Road for $5m and a Duke Road property for $3.7m. Kess and Graham believe that 2019 will continue to see the perceived importance of the ‘beach side’ property being replaced by ‘lifestyle’ purchasing. Buyer demographics will further endorse the trend towards rural tranquility, ‘off the grid’ sustainability and providing the family with the enviable lifestyle that the Hinterland has in abundance. Call us now to discuss how we can achieve a record price for your property.
