Notes Editor’s note ... For many of us, we love living in the hinterland because we’re surrounded by trees - the sound of leaves rustling in the wind, and twittering birds tree-hopping, is wonderful and calming. Plus in the heat the canopy of green shade is a godsend. But living in bushland or rainforest comes at a cost. If there’s a fire, there’s plenty of wood to burn... The heat wave that spread across Qld last week is a sobering reminder to have a fire plan, clean gutters and leaf litter – and don’t burn off when a region registers Severe Fire Danger. It’s getting hot out there… SACHA HAMILTON-MACL AREN editor@eumundigreen.com.au \ PO Box 482, Eumundi 4562

HELPFUL HINTS

HELPFUL HINTS ABOUT CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Jenny Brice, Executive coaching, Eumundi No one knows what the future holds but obtaining new skills in a variety of environments can be a lot of fun and create unexpected opportunities. Here are a few helpful hints for parents to consider about career opportunities for their teenagers leaving school and contemplating a career. 1. Investigate where the job opportunities of the future are: The three growth clusters are: a) Technology b) Information and transfer of knowledge. These skills are transferable to many professions. The skills you gain as a lawyer or a journalist are very transferable although these professions are currently in decline. c) Health and well-being. This is particularly relevant with a fit conscious aging population.

employment website provides about the latest labour market information. This includes what jobs are likely to be in under or over supply now and in the future. For example: Currently there is oversupply of scientists in Australia and undersupply of construction tradespeople.

EUMUNDI VILLAGE PHARMACY A wide range of Natio gift packs for Christmas in store now!

4. Seek work experience even if it is not in their specific area of interest. Research shows experience in any area of work is seen as an absolute advantage. It can demonstrate life experience which employers are looking for. 5. Keep optimistic and resilient in the face of adversity. Research also shows that young people who remain optimistic and resilient have a higher level of success transitioning into the workforce.

2. Check out the New Work Reality report put out by the foundations for Young Australians on the net. It provides some useful insights including 4 other growth areas.

6. Always consider how to obtain a broad range of skills. Your children may be able to teach surfing, wait tables and learn to build bridges. The future of workforce is about flexibility and developing a broad range of skills easily demonstrates this.

I’m excited about the many opportunities that will flow from the cable which should be in service by mid-2020.

Community partnerships The Community Partnership Funding Program provides a welcome nancial boost to local community organisations. This year, 113 local not-for-profit community groups across our region will receive more than $870,000 in grants funding toward operational costs. Artworks brighten Eumundi

Dulong past and present

Eumundi is a jewel in the Coast’s crown and projects like this contribute to making the town a destination of choice for locals and tourists 365 days a year, rather than just the two market days of Wednesday and Saturday. The $10,000 street art project was funded by council’s Horizon Festival, the Eumundi and District Community Organisation, Experience Eumundi, Eumundi Chamber of Commerce and Eumundi Historical Association.

Land for Wildlife celebrates 20 years Congratulations to the Sunshine Coast’s passionate, private landowners who have worked to restore their properties and roll out the welcome mat for our native species through the Land for Wildlife program. Sunshine Coast membership in the program is the largest in South East Queensland with more than 1000 landholders collectively protecting and restoring 8272ha of habitat across the region.

Nambour street art trail October rain didn’t deter more than 4500 in town for Nambour’s inaugural Street Art Festival. Congratulations to Lorraine Taylor and her hard working committee for an outstanding event that added 16 new murals, by eight talented artists, to Nambour’s existing street art. The new works are now in place, boosting artworks along the Street Art Trail to 32, with more to come as the event grows in 2019 and beyond. Collect your copy of the 2018 Nambour Street Art Trail map and your phone for some selfies - hashtag them #nambourstreetart and hit the trail.

Discover local history at Dulong Lookout, the most picture perfect spot in the Nambour hinterland. Dulong is part of the traditional homelands of the Kabi Kabi people. In the early days of settlement it was known as Doolong, the name of the selection chosen by John Murtagh. The new signage, which also features historical photos, tells us about ‘Doolong Jack’, as John was known, who was the district’s first recorded settler and associated with every district advancement. He served on the Maroochy Divisional Board, was the official Census collector, the Postmaster and was chairman of the Dulong Provisional School.

One of the Sunshine Coast’s most picturesque and popular tourist drawcards is now even more appealing, with a splash of colour on the public waste bins in Eumundi’s Memorial Drive and the Caplick Way underpass. The artworks on Caplick Way underpass and on the bin art panels in Memorial Drive were created during the award-winning 2017 Horizon Festival by 12 artists from the Sunshine Coast, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane who engaged with visitors as they painted.

Community HOME GROWN MO-VEMBER

BRIGADES TRAINED JUST IN TIME FOR UNPRECEDENTED FIRE SEASON

The Eumundi moustache community celebrated a month of good growing and raising awareness for men’s health last Friday night at The Imperial Hotel’s Outback Bar. Coorganiser Jack Mackenzie (right) said he hoped the doctors had been kept busy this month as Eumundi men book in to get their health check-ups. “And what a great return of over $3000 in funds raised by 50 plus peeps,” Jack enthused.

With the fire danger rating for the Southeast Coast sitting on severe, Eumundi and Doonan Fire Brigades held training nights for new recruits recently just in time for what has turned out to be an horrific fire season already. With over 140 fires burning across the State last week at any given time, strike teams from Eumundi (Duncan Sayers and Geoff Garley) and Doonan (Ian Poad and Rick Mannington) sent to assist.

Significant heat records have tumbled in what was an extraordinary week of widespread heatwave conditions combined with Catastrophic fire dangers for Queensland. Bureau of Meteorology State Manager for Queensland, Bruce Gunn, said the severity of these conditions is reflected both in the number of records broken and number of fires, many of which are still burning. Weary from the excitement of arriving and setting up at our Kenilworth campsite, I crawl into my sleeping bag. When I wake up I can hear birds tweeting and dogs barking. The sun shines brightly on my tent ordering me to hop out of bed and get ready for a brand, new day. I have my breakfast by the campfire, still smouldering from the night before. Following this, I get on my bike and ride around the campsite tracks with my friends.

The night sky is as dark as the fur of a black panther. The stars twinkle like a million fireflies darting around. The ripples of the river water shimmer as it reflects the blazing campfire.

We ride to the swings that are down by the river and ditch our bikes in the long, swaying grass. Because the swings are on a giant hill, they go metres high. There is a swing that takes you so high you have to grip tightly onto the foot loop to help you stay on. As you swing you almost touch the clouds and then you twist and twirl until you finally reach the ground. Cont’d on pg 18

Three more days, I thought with my head in my hands. I sighed in exasperation as I look forward to my weekend adventures with my dog, Boefie. At least I live in the Hinterland where I have access to wide open spaces to run around with Boefie. Plus, just a short car trip away is a wonderful beach where my furry friend is always welcome. For now, I guess, I’ll have to concentrate on my school work until I can get home to the eagerly waiting Boefie.

When I arrive home from school Boefie is keen to play. Our large Hinterland backyard provides me with the perfect place to do this. Finally Saturday arrived and we’re off to the beach! I leapt out of our car and rushed to the paradise path (path to the beach), Boefie hot on my tail. I inhaled the salty crisp air, my family far behind me. Cont’d on pg 18

Samantha Williams, Personal Trainer, Eumundi

“Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out.” The Secret, Robert Collier using to distract us, self-medicate or just make us feel better. These could be sugary food, alcohol, savoury foods, sitting on our phone - the list goes on. Think about what your unhealthy distractions are.... How can you start this process of becoming aware of unhealthy habits and replace them with positive ones that help us achieve our goals? We can join a group or program to get support and learn about tools and strategies that help guide us in the right direction. 20 Eumundi locals went on a 30 day journey to really tackle the habits that were holding them back from achieving their health and fitness goals. What does this quote mean when it comes to our own success in health and fitness? And what habits equal success for our health and wellbeing goals? More importantly how do we implement these positive habits for long term lasting health and fitness?

The first step is really becoming aware of the daily habits that do not serve our health and fitness goals. This can be quite challenging, often we are on automatic day to day. Many of our habits are so ingrained we really have to take time to dissect our daily routines to realise the unhealthy things we may be

You can also start small. Break your unhealthy, daily habits by setting yourself a short time period goal it could be daily or weekly – or perhaps in the lead up to Christmas! Make the decision to go without sugary foods, or alcohol for two weeks. Starting with a shorter time makes it achievable but make sure you set yourself realistic goals. Replace the unhealthy habit with a healthy one.

Outdoors Fire season - cont’d from pg 12 “It is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of firefighters, emergency services personnel, volunteers and the actions undertaken by members of the community that we have not seen any loss of life during the past week, but we are by no means through this yet,” he said. While conditions have eased following the Catastrophic Fire Danger ratings observed on Wednesday, Severe to Extreme heatwave conditions are expected to continue into next week extending into the northwest and southeast of the state. “We also wanted to clarify that while Catastrophic conditions have been observed in Queensland in the past, this was a very short-lived event which occurred in Birdsville (19 Sept 2012), for about an hour,” Mr Gunn explained. “On Wednesday (28 Nov 2018), Rockhampton Airport recorded Catastrophic conditions for approximately three-and-a-half hours (between 1.30-5pm local time). This was the first time this district had recorded Catastrophic conditions and the most prolonged event in Queensland since the

implementation of the current Fire Danger Rating System in 2010. Daytime temperatures are expected to peak around 8-10 degrees above average in the southeast on Sunday where Severe heatwave conditions may develop in heavily populated parts in the southeast, posing a health risk to the vulnerable in the community. So far in this event, many November temperature records have been broken including Cairns Airport, which has broken its previous November maximum temperature record for four consecutive days. A number of sites recorded their highest temperature in any month, breaking all previous records. When a region registers Severe Fire Danger, all permits are cancelled. Report all fires to 000. bom.gov.au/australia/heatwave.

Outdoors 2 4 0 0 H E C TA R E S F O R K O A L A H A B I TAT A landmark agreement will see protection of more than 2000 hectares of Noosa koala habitat. Mayor Tony Wellington and Queensland Environment Minister Leeanne Enoch joined Noosa Parks Association President Michael Gloster and HQ Plantations representatives on site to sign the $3.5M conservation deal today. It will see private harvesting licences phased out within the 2,400 hectares of state-owned forest between Tewantin, Cooroy, Pomona and Boreen Point and the timber company compensated. Mayor Wellington said the project was a huge win for koalas, the environment and the local community. “Council is delighted to work with the State Government, Noosa Parks Association and HQPlantations Pty Ltd to deliver this Queensland-first project,” the Mayor said. “Over time, this project will generate opportunities for ecotourism, scientific research and the enjoyment of locals and visitors. And it will not only benefit our local koalas,

but many threatened and endangered species like quolls, giant barred frogs and the wonderfully named Hairy Hazelwood.” The 2,400 hectares will be gradually added to the Tewantin National Park, doubling its size to over 5000 hectares and connecting it to Cooloola National Park, over the next 10 years. Council, the State Government and Noosa Parks Association will jointly fund the $3.5M investment needed to secure the land. Council will provide one third of the funding from the Environment Levy, the State will contribute a third, and the remaining third will be funded by Noosa Parks Association. The State will hold Council’s contribution, and that of Noosa Parks Association, in trust until the land is gazetted as conservation park with Council as trustee. The interest earned will be spent on koala conservation programs in the Noosa region. The Mayor said that the land will

The Mayor also acknowledged the seminal role played by Noosa Parks Association in this project.

{ T H E G R E E N 5 December 2018

“The original concept was brought to us by Noosa Parks Association nearly two years ago. Council recognised the significance of the proposal,” he said. ”It is possibly the last really big land-based environmental project that this shire will see.”

Cont’d from pg 15

The sunset falls as the night sky appears. We watch the fire crackle as we roast our marshmallows. We also use the fire to cook the damper we make. I wrap the dough around the end of a stick and place it in the fire to cook. Unfortunately, sometimes my dough topples into the fire. With stomachs filled following our camping feast, laughter and voices break the silence of the Hinterland night as the children play card games’ while the adults sit around the fire and talk.

Replace your go-to unhealthy food with your favourite fruit, or a hand full of nuts. When you feel the urge to self-medicate drink some water or go for a walk. By having a small fitness goal that you’d like to maintain from now till Christmas, that’s easy to implement (keep it realistic and achievable) such as start walking 30 min four days a week and increasing water intake to two litres a day. It’s important to have these as your non-negotiables when setting these goals. Meaning that’s the minimum that you have to stick to - no exceptions. Start small and build from there.

I love that only a short drive away from my Hinterland house is the best camping trip I could have with my family and friends. Boefie’s inifinite playground - cont’d from pg 14 water. My family had already begun our favourite walk from Peregian to Stumers Creek. I ran to join them, like every other time we come here, appreciating precious moments with my pet and family.

Enthusiastically I jumped into the refreshing, crystal clear water. As I dived down, a wave swept over my head. Like me, Boefie rushed into the sea and dogpaddled his way towards me, he was not the fastest but he had style!

Breaking unhealthy habits can also be easier to do with

friends and family. The habits you’re wanting to break can be different, but by setting a mutual time goal together you can offer each other support and encouragement, then celebrate the achievement together. The most important benefit of changing habits with a friend or group is it gives you the ability to be more aware of how you lead your life. It’s still ok to have treats now and then, but it’s important to find a balance and how to achieve it. These actions will become habits the more you repeat. It’s just about starting, building each day, the small efforts really do matter! You can do this!

After a fun day it is just a short drive to return to my Hinterland home. How lucky I feel to have the best of both worlds, the space of hinterland living yet still close to the beautiful beach.

Eventually my family arrived, also flinging their towels off, and joining me. We splashed around diving into mountainous waves, enjoying the sunny day. I soon realised that my dog and I were the last ones left in the cool
