November is always a crazy month. So much to get done – so much work to finish - and dragging the kids through the last weeks of the school year is exhausting. Christmas seems like some sort of finish line with the promise to relax, catch our breath and find the reserves to do it all again next year. But don’t wish away these days… there’s hinterland sunsets, barbeques, parties, swims, walks, all still to be enjoyed before the holidays. And there’s this beautiful, golden light filling my room of a morning lately, coaxing me to open my eyes throw back my arms, and get out into the day… before the heat kicks in. Life is good.

In this, my last column for The Green, as I move on from my role as general manager of Experience Eumundi, I look back on four and a half years working with this wonderful community with great pride. One of the first actions on taking on this role was a complete re-staging of the delightful magazine you hold in your hands - with beautiful graphic design that sings Eumundi by Lil Staff and of course brilliant and timely editorial content under Sacha McLaren-Hamilton’s clear vision. The Green certainly keeps our community connected and is one of the most admired community magazines around - thanks to the work of Sacha and Lil, and also the wonderful volunteers who help produce and deliver the magazine every fortnight. Thanks also to the Experience Eumundi board for approving a significant subsidy to keep The Green in paper and ink each year. We have also achieved great outcomes in other Experience Eumundi constitutional objectives in recent years including significantly improved community amenity such as our wonderful Dick Caplick Park playground, the “Terraces” redevelopment, our hugely popular RV stopover and BBQ area... plus the installation of a number of community art works as well as cultural enhancements many-fold with Eumundi School of Rock, Australian Wearable Art Festival, Slam in the Bunker to name but a few enduring arts and culture events that both build capacity and enhance opportunities for local artists... and, of course, save the dates for our upcoming annual Eumundi Lights Up Xmas night markets! None of this would be possible without the incredible efforts by Richard, Phil, Kerrie, Kerry and the vast team of vollies who make the markets carparks and the company run silkily smooth - ensuring good income is earned to be reinvested in our community, as well as a beautiful, friendly Eumundi welcome to every one of those 1.2million visitors to our world famous markets each year. Finally a big shout out to our digital team headed up by Lou and Amelia who bring you our fortnightly e-blast with so much news about upcoming Eumundi attractions as well as keeping the community and visitors up to speed on all things Eumundi via our website and social media platforms. None this could be possible without the collegial support of our Board and three member organisations - Eumundi Historical Association, Eumundi & District Community Association and Eumundi Chamber of Commerce. Business F LY I N G W E S T O P E N S WA R E H O U S E C A F E Hinterland locals who frequent Berkelouw Café and the Original Eumundi Markets will be familiar with Ben and Nina’s Flying West Roasters coffee. Once called Don Benucci, Flying West has been a staple at the markets for 13 years, with Ben’s family being a market institution due to 30 years as Eumundi stall holders. “My family were one of the original market stall holders to bring espresso based coffee into Eumundi,” Ben shared. Ben and Nina West have been successfully importing specialty coffee beans from all around the world, to roast themselves at their Doonan Warehouse for years. But the need to showcase their coffee – and due to demand from customers they recently decided to grow and develop their venture into something bigger. The couple recently renovated the roastery warehouse (where the old tender shed once was) at Fellowship Dr, into a beautiful, industrial style café. Nina explained they saw a great opportunity to provide the Noosa Hinterland community with beautiful coffee and delicious, wholesome food, from their Doonan warehouse. “Its home to our family and we love it here, so we want to contribute something new to the area and make it great for the Doonan locals - and also those visiting the Sunshine Coast,” she said.

Business RENOS JUST IN TIME FOR CUP This year the Melbourne Cup celebrations at Joe’s Waterhole were taken up a notch with the bistro dining room’s renovations unveiled. Manager Sophie Eaton said it started with fixing a leaky roof then escalated from there. “After 36 years the dining room was due for a breath of fresh air, and with bistro couple Phil and Di retiring, it seemed like the perfect time to renovate,” she shared. Sophie said there were a few hick-ups along the way, with the bistro having to close for four months. “But with a lot of hard labour from some awesome builders and locals - not to mention the driving force of Felicity Newman – it came together in time for Melbourne Cup on the green at Joe’s Bar and Grill,” she said. The 88 patrons dressed in their cup finery, praised the new look dining room and food from new chef Craig and his wife Teresa. Craig comes with oodles of five star experience having cooked for International hotels around the world. “Everyone absolutely loved the food and were really impressed with the change to the room, especially the roof and atrium,” Sophie enthused.

Road safety campaign Following months of lobbying, TMR have finally agreed to safety upgrades for the Cash Rd intersection on the Eumundi Noosa Rd. A huge thank you to local residents who signed the petition calling for the upgrades, particularly Vonnie Burton who has been a great help circulating the petition and raising campaign awareness.
The intersection will be upgraded with new line marking and an improved righthand turn lane for motorists turning right into Cash Rd, with the works expected to be completed in time for the busy holiday period. This is great news and follows the announcement of a $200,000 planning study that is looking at the safety of the full length of the Eumundi Noosa Rd. As part of that study, a speed limit review has also been completed between Wilkes Lane and Beddington Rd which has recommended the speed remain at 80km per hour for the time being. Overall, this is a great outcome for the local residents and I am grateful for their support for our campaign to improve the safety of this busy arterial road.
Seib Rd Bridge A number of people have asked what is happening with the Seib Rd Bridge. As many readers will know, this is an issue I have been campaigning on since before the election and it remains one of my top local priorities. Throughout the year I’ve been working closely with TMR and Council to broker a 50/50 funding agreement and I’ve been given verbal confirmation that we are moving towards a final design and costing. I understand there’s a sense of frustration at how long these negotiations have taken but given this has been something the local community have been lobbying for 20 years, my efforts to get the State and Council on board and provide in-principle agreement is a positive indication we are on track. Gambling grants Eumundi District Swimming Club recently secured a $35,000 grant through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. What a great way to top off the year! Don’t forget, the last round of Gambling grants closes at the end of this month so head to the online portal at gamblingcommunityfund.qld. gov.au to apply.

L oca l Spot lig ht 90 YEARS IN EUMUNDI Darcy Robinson and Clio Kross Year 6, ESS Ignite English A fellow resident, living among us, has grown up in Eumundi, gone to school in Eumundi, married in Eumundi, raised her family in Eumundi and has been living in the same Eumundi house for 66 years! However, when Joan Keehn went to Eumundi State School, she wasn’t dropped off by a bus or a car, she rode a horse to school. And what is now the oval for fun and games, was the horse paddock! Joan is a wise, gentle lady who has spent her entire 90 years of life in the village: from the very beginning. Joan was here when there was everything you needed in Eumundi! There were three grocery shops, a paper shop and butcher, most of which are gone now. Joan stated, ‘’Now we haven’t even got half the amount of shops we had when I was young.’’

Overall there have been many changes in her lifetime. As for Joan’s career, once she finished school, she went on to work on the farm in the Eumundi area, then later on at the exchange post office in Eumundi. When Joan married, she moved to the other end of town, and then to her house that she still resides in now. Joan has volunteered for many community groups and events. Some of these include; helping with meals on wheels, being in a care and share group, and helping with the School of Arts Hall. Joan has only left Eumundi occasionally going on trips to New Zealand, Tasmania

Books MILKMAN DELIVERS I began following the Man Booker Prize for literature a few years ago and, even though it’s changed somewhat since then, I look forward to the announcement of the winner each year. I also enjoy the intense discussions about the Booker itself, as well as the shortlists and, of course, the final choice. This year’s winner is Irish writer Anna Burns, for her novel Milkman. Set in 1970’s Northern Ireland during The Troubles, Milkman is the story of an eighteen-year-old girl, Middle Sister, as she struggles to maintain her independence and negotiate a future life within the narrow confines of a fiercely tribalistic community and family in which the rules are strictly policed, but rarely made explicit until they are broken. Burns skilfully shows us how the rules are reinforced and internalised. Middle Sister learns the hard way that reading is frowned upon and reading while walking is even worse, especially if it attracts a stalker. This private activity soon becomes

public, inviting the intense scrutiny of a deeply repressive community. It’s a novel that begins as it means to go on. The first sentence in Middle Sister’s distinctive voice lets the reader know how the story will be told, “The day Somebody McSomebody put a gun to my breast and called me a cat and threatened to shoot me was the same day the Milkman died.” It is a familiar style in Irish writing, a revolt against the confines of English writing and an expression of a national psyche; it is convoluted and colourful, at times surreal.
are entrenched through force, including extreme social pressure. This particular story is told very well, but Milkman is not an easy read; the reader needs to become immersed in Burn’s surrealistic style, to relax and let the story and its meaning emerge, but it’s definitely worth the effort.

I was grateful not to have to deal with graphic accounts of physical violence, but in a way the effects of extreme religious conformity and a formidable brand of patriarchy over time, are more horrific. This is not just the story of Northern Ireland but of so many times and places in the world where ideology and conformity

The community came together under the McIntyre tree, one of Eumundi’s 20 WW1 Memorial Trees, on Sunday 11 November. It was a great turnout for the 100th anniversary of the ending of WW1, with over 100 people attending the service. Eumundi local Bob Ward, RAN medic (Rtd) Vietnam Veteran, opened proceedings and acknowledged VIP’s and a lone piper Barry Laws then began to play Amazing Grace. Joshua Ison from Tewantin Primary School (TPS) ably read the very poignant poem In Flanders Field written by John McCrae during WW1. Eumundi’s Colonel Greg Molyneux CSC (Rtd) then gave a short moving speech to honour all who have fought in all conflicts. The old church bell at Discover Eumundi was rung slowly 11 times, finishing exactly on 11am, as a fitting salute to the ending of WW1, on the 11th day of the 11th month at 11am in 1918.

Wreaths were then laid by Bob Ward on behalf of Returned Service Personnel of the Australian Defence Force; Doug Page, Vietnam Veteran, Australian Army on behalf of the Eumundi Community and Janet Millington for the Eumundi CWA. Eumundi State School (ESS) captains Gus Gunton and Indigo Whyatt, Evie Bastow and Clancy McKenzie also laid wreaths in pairs. The community was also invited to lay flowers or wreaths.

A year of classes and rehearsals culminated with the end-of-year performance for Eumundi’s calisthenic kids at the School of Arts hall recently. The two younger groups performed five dances, with the two older groups performing six, to showcase the dance and gymnastic skills that teacher Fiona Greig had choreographed for the children. Fiona shared the concert was a great success with all 50 students thriving onstage. “The audience of proud family and friends was enthusiastic and supportive, which helps make sure the kids really shine onstage,” Fiona shared. “The students will now turn to preparation mode for Carols,” she said. The dance school will be performing at Carols in Eumundi on Sat 8 December at the amphitheatre.

Living BRINGING BACK THE BUSH

Around two years ago we started planning some renovations and extensions to our Lake Weyba home. Anyone who’s undertaken even a minor reno knows that just the planning alone is time consuming - let alone the process - especially when, as we are, you decide to owner-build. I spend a lot of time writing and talking about DIY yet its still been a pretty steep learning curve. It has also been a painful one as I broke my leg & dislocated my ankle on our site the day before the first concrete pour. In many respects the most interesting part for me has been to try and work sustainably through the project. Thankfully these days it has become much easier to source sustainable timber and many timbers are now treated with more benign chemicals to protect them against attack and decay. So putting aside these big-picture components I thought I’d share a few other little sustainable building tips.

In-built Sustainability Adding sustainable elements to a building as a retro-fit is both costly and inconvenient so think before you build. A major part of the first stage of our reno was a new build – adding an outdoor entertaining and lounge space. A long wall faces west so it catches all of the
afternoon sun. Along this wall we added a couple of banks of louvre windows (see above) for both light and ventilation. Rather than having glass blades
we had them optioned with hollow-core aluminium blades. These deflect heat while still allowing light into the area and importantly, ventilation. As the ceiling is raked, heated air rises upwards creating a natural, cooling convection current. To further take the edge off the heat we insulated all walls that are directly exposed to the sun. In the scheme of things these are minor expenses for excellent improvements to in-built
sustainability and comfort.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle We’ve always been big on the three R’s but this reno has let us take things a lot further. Material reuse – Anything that comes out of our project is considered first for reuse, second for resale or giveaway value and, as a last resort, tipping. Cont’d on pg 18

Richmond Birdwing butterfly vine This near threatened rainforest vine occurs in northern NSW and SE QLD and is the food plant for the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly caterpillar. It is a beautiful, vigorous vine with thick dark green leaves. The flowers are very strange and are an insect trap, temporarily trapping poor insects and then releasing them later, after they have completed their pollinator role! Tricky flowers! Never the less they are pretty little flowers. The fruits look like little yellow cucumbers with heartshaped seeds inside.
There is no such thing as a Sunday sleep in for my family. It is straight up at six o’clock in the morning and enjoying the scenic route to the Eumundi Conservation Park. The condensation on the window blurs my vision as we cruise past trees, still as statues, due to the absence of the early morning breeze. The vivid greenery seems to welcome the warmth of the morning sun. The car brakes screech to a stop. I bounce out of the car and enter the emerald green, flourishing forest; my family close behind me. The lively sounds of chirping birds surround me as I enter the forest, stumbling along the rocky pathway. As I continue into the heart of the forest, I close my eyes and take a deep breath of early morning air. I open them again to take in my surroundings. I see several types of birds, soaring from tree to
tree, eager for a delicious worm. I stop, look up and am greeted by light filtering through the crevices in the leaves that make up the forest canopy. The crisp, cold, dewy air slowly fills my nostrils as I inhale. I feel the soft bark of the trees as I brush my hands against them. “There’s nothing better than an early bushwalk,” I think to myself as I approach the end of the Eumundi Conservation Park.
The lowland subtropical rainforest that this vine is found in is increasingly fragmented and is listed as critically endangered. Because of the destruction of this habitat, the Birdwing Butterfly is listed as vulnerable. This all sounds very doom and gloom but there is hope. Through protection of remaining habitat, the rehabilitation of lowland rainforest, and the planting of this vine, we can increase the vines range and therefore the butterflies range. Pipe Vine, Aristolochia elegans, is a major threat to the Birdwing Butterfly. The flowers of this vine are amazing and huge, but don’t be fooled! This vine is a killer! It kills the caterpillars. Being related to our native Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vine, the butterfly lays her eggs on this introduced species, the eggs hatch and the little baby caterpillars eat the leaves but are poisoned and die. The Richmond Birdwing Butterfly is a very beautiful and large butterfly with a wingspan of up to 140mm. The males have green and black markings, while the females are larger but lack the green colour. I was lucky enough to see a brand new Birdwing Butterfly emerge from his cocoon when I worked at Fairhill Native Plants (see photo). I have since seen two butterflies on our property in Eumundi in recent years so I encourage you to plant some vines on your property! You can find these vines for sale at most Landcare nurseries. The last Eumundi Bushcare Group working bee will be Sunday 25 November, 8.30 to 11, at Eumundi’s Sunken Garden, in Pacey Street, with morning tea provided. New volunteers always welcome.

Local Gubbi Gubbi artist Lyndon Davis and wood carver Shane Christensen, came together to share their knowledge and creativity with students and staff. Wendy Birrell, Discover Eumundi Manager, was also there representing the Eumundi and District Historical Association (EHA), who have graciously funded this Community Art Work.

Shane shared his knowledge about the tree and native bees, and the stories of the animals he has also carved into the log; a beautiful black cockatoo, sugar glider and red belly black snake, all who would have inhabited this ancient log. This sculpture has its permanent home at the Ecology Centre that is part of Eumundi State Primary School.
Anne Harris, Eumundi This Bee Hive is part of the Tree Place project that has taken an ancient tree that fell on the Noosa Eumundi Rd in September 2015, and used this as a teacher, collaborator and inspiration for sharing the stories of place and connecting community. We are grateful for the support from our local community
in helping make this project happen. Sunspace looked after this huge log for two years and the Original Eumundi Market provided the space for the carving of this sculpture, before it’s delivery to the school. This hive was generously funded by the Eumundi and District Historical Association through Arts and Culture Eumundi.

We’re reusing everything from fascia boards to gutter brackets to timber. Stainless steel balustrade cables and fittings (right) were salvaged and I’ll use them in the garden to train climbing plants. Good soil from pier holes was saved to create planting mounds for fruit trees that don’t like wet feet. Just stop and think and try to salvage from the outset. We’ve used local Facebook groups to give away second hand roofing tin and likewise to sell larger ticket items like unneeded windows.
