Business S U N S H I N E C O A S T T O U R I S M C O L L A B O R AT I N G I N E U M U N D I Over 300 business people from across the Coast networked with Hinterland business owners last Wednesday night at the Imperial Hotel’s Eumundi Brewery. Simon Latchford, CEO of Visit Sunshine Coast, explained that events like this are important to local businesses. “We do them every month across the Coast because they’re a great opportunity to hear what’s going on across the region, but also to get the various businesses and tourism groups working together with shared goals,” he shared. Mr Latchford believes for the Coast to continue on its upward protectory of tourism success,

various factions need to pull together. “Historically, going back four or five years, it’s not something the Sunshine Coast has been good at – but having Tourism Noosa and Sunshine Coast Tourism working together with Experience Eumundi and the Imperial Hotel to put together this event is awesome.” “We are so much stronger together than we are apart,” he said. Mr Latchford explained that for Sunshine Coast tourism to continue to grow we can’t keep relying on the drive market (400km radius), which was once

the region’s primary tourism market. “Clearly the Bruce is under an awful lot of pressure with traffic, so we have to open up to new national and international markets as the drive market has a horizon of five to seven years life left,” he said. The new international airport will deliver this new tourism market, but the Sunshine Coast must now unite to offer itself as a combined experience. “Working as individual tribes didn’t work, so now we’re a collection of partnerships willing to try it a different way [and who are] working together on Team Sunshine

Coast,” he explained. “But if you look at where we’ve come in the last two to three years, you’d have to have your eyes painted on not to see the difference,” Mr Latchford said. For a relatively small hinterland village, Eumundi seems to attract a lot of events and sees around 1.8 million tourists visiting every year. Mr Latchford thinks there’s many a good reason for that.

Business “Eumundi is a bit different – which was why we brought the TV show Sunrise here earlier this year – and they were blown away!”

the world. “People come from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, New Zealand, New York – you want to keep that uniqueness,” he shared.

UNEARTHING EUMUNDI’S I D E N T I T Y Anthony Wynne-Hoeslscher, Eumundi

“They loved the charm of the place: the servo with the petrol bowsers right on the footpath; the cool cars parked in town; the huge trees along the streets; the bookshop; Eumundi has its own beer. The place is unique to Australia.

“Eumundi Markets is the biggest attraction on the Coast, but most people don’t know that or realise the pulling power that has.”

Twenty-five movers and shakers representing both business and community stakeholders spent a day together earlier this month to unearth Eumundi’s true identity. This workshop was designed to create new strategies to promote our town and hinterland moving forward as a collective.

And there’s the big advantage of Eumundi Markets resonating so strongly throughout Australia and

Mr Latchford believes if we can encourage our uniqueness and “maintain the bits we love” while working together as Team Sunshine Coast then we’ll continue to grow the region’s economy … ”as long as we don’t bugger it up!”

The session teased out the various facets that make up Eumundi as both a destination for visitors and tourists but also a place to raise a family or enjoy a tree change. Attendees at this intensive workshop held at the Imperial Hotel’s Green Room and organised by Visit Sunshine Coast included: representation from markets operators through to Memorial Dr businesses; Eumundi State School; local artisans and micro business owners; and community groups. Facilitated by the team at Customer Frame, a phenomenal number of positives emerged from the

session that will help shape the future of tourism and business growth within our special Eumundi community, and lead our local identity and our unique appeal for both Experience Eumundi and Visit Sunshine Coast marketing efforts. Issues that were unpacked included: What are the current customer perceptions of Eumundi? What are the emerging customer profiles for this region? What are the trends in cultural and heritage tourism? What position does Eumundi “own” within the wider Sunshine Coast? How can Eumundi complement the other Sunshine Coast regions to create a holistic customer experience that’s good for the entire Sunshine Coast? Where are the gaps in our tourism and visitor offer? In coming weeks, the results will be published in The Green for community comment and dialogue.

I was delighted to drop in to the Pengari Children’s Festival last weekend. It was great to see so many locals enjoying the day’s festivities, and I was particularly impressed by the Kabi Kabi beehive designed by Lyndon Davis and hand-carved by Shane Christensen.

I have been working with Noosa Pengari School Director Francis Klugman and Council to discuss options to help relieve congestion and improve safety at the intersection of Grays Rd and the Eumundi Noosa Rd. While news of the planning study of the Eumundi Noosa Rd has met with plenty of local approval, the school has raised their concerns about the intersection with me and I will be meeting with TMR and Council on site next month. Qld’s Container Refund Scheme launches on 1 November, and there are opportunities for community

groups to get involved. Under the new scheme, eligible beverage containers will be worth 10 cents, with groups to act as collection points. To learn more about how your group could benefit, get along to the community forum in Nambour on 29 August, or Caloundra on 30 August. You can register your interest at Eventbrite by searching “CRS Information Sessions” or email kellie.lindsay@ boomerangalliance.org.au Just a reminder also about the upcoming deadline for the latest round of Gambling grants which closes on 31 August, as does Round 98. There is up to $250,000 up for grabs. Log on to the online grants portal at www. gamblingcommunityfund.qld. gov.au for all the details. I’d love to see a few more groups from the local area secure funding.

DRAGONS FOR DROUGHT RELIEF The Eumundi Dragon Rugby Union Club recently raised $1,000 to donate to the Buy a Bale charity which supports farmers doing it tough due to the drought. The donation was raised at the club’s canteen when 12 visiting teams visited the Eumundi Showgrounds. Head Coach Doug Toms said, “All of us need from time to time support to deal with some of the hardships that life throws up at us.” “Even though we on the Sunshine Coast [and] can still enjoy playing on green fields, this is not the case Twins Jack and Will sparks. for our country cousins,” he said. EXHIBITION OPENING The recent opening of the Traces exhibition at Wan’din’in Arts Space in Eumundi, featuring the artwork of Jane Parker and Mo Riggs, had a great turnout of around 40 people and two little dogs. Music by local singer and guitarist Michelle Clifford and delicious food supplied by the artists made the evening all the more special. The artists will be holding a collage workshop entitled Experience Your Memories of the Sunshine Coast, on 6 Sept at the art space. Bookings 0410 857 382 or discovereumundi.com/arts-space/ calendar. The exhibition runs until Sat 15 Sept.

Some of last year’s wearable art entrants at the Eumundi Square parade. I am passionate about Wearable Art as it offers a diverse platform for artists and designers across all genres to explore without material limits. A wearable artist can just as easily be an engineer or architect and work with materials as dissimilar as bicycle parts, plastic, fabrics, paper, plumbing off cuts, plant material – whatever sparks creativity. The Australian Wearable Art Festival’s official launch will be held at the Imperial Hotel, Eumundi, Friday 31 August, 6pm. The renowned Peter Dwyer, senior academic of the prestigious Whitehouse Institute of Design and previously fashion design head of Karl Von Busse Institute of Design, will co-present with Cindy Vogels, acclaimed fashion designer to the stars. Artworks will be created on stage and a wonderful human installation

will be the centrepiece for the evening. I see Eumundi as the Art Centre of the Sunshine Coast. It has an edgy, artistic feel to it that encourages and inspires people to see the artist within themselves. Also, with the markets here, it offers people the opportunity to place artistic endeavours into the public eye and grow. Australian Wearable Art offers to further inspire and encourage this local artistic development however it is open to entrants nationally and even internationally! The growth opportunities it offers this community are not of course limited to entrants; it promises to enhance and grow skills in all associated event management areas from photography, modeling to lighting and stage dressing!

DRIVE-IN RETURNS FOR SPRING Starry Nights Drive-in will be holding a Eumundi drive-in screening of Footloose and Saturday Night Fever on Sat 1 Sept, 5pm (1st movie screens 6.30pm), at Eumundi Showgrounds. Car spaces limited to 200. $25 a car with $10 walk-ins welcome. ticketebo.com.au

Music GET YOUR SCHOOL OF ROCK GOD ON

Cheryl Webb, Eumundi

Eumundi State School plays host to the “Eumundi School of Rock”. In just over three years it has brought the creative musical talents of the students to the attention of the wider 4562 community. This year the organizing committee has decided to increase the catchment area and have invited more Sunshine Coast schools to get involved in the program. The School of Rock (SoR) is the brainchild of celebrated local singer Katie Noonan. She saw so much undeveloped creative potential and was inspired by the notion that young, budding musicians could benefit from a program based on teamwork, camaraderie and mentorship by the likes of Zac Hurren (saxophonist and composer) O.J. (Sydney Conservatorium Alumni) and other invited professional musicians. I was lucky enough to sit in on the audition today (22/8) and let me tell you, music is alive and well in the hinterland. And the instruments are varied as well - not just the usual suspects of guitar, drums and bass, but a couple of the children played sax too.

Ethan Patterson auditioning.

All of the children were very enthusiastic about the prospect of being successful at their audition. Jasper Cunningham (guitarist) was in the program last year, but was determined to have another go. Jasper found the SoR experience really fun. “I want to be in a rock band”, said Jasper. “I learnt a lot about stage craft and the music business too. It’s a difficult business, but it’s worth it.” Jasper is coming back to extend himself and learning from such talented and dedicated teachers is an opportunity that doesn’t come along every day. O.J. is passionate about the children learning and playing great Aussie music. He had chosen two songs for the young musos to learn as audition pieces: Jungle by Emma Louise

and DMA’s Delete. I heard Jonah from Year 6 sing Jungle. Nice tone and well in tune. I watched enthralled as The Marshall Brothers (Cain, Issac and Luke) rocked the room with a song of their own. Ethan from Peregian Springs S.S. laid it down with his tenor sax and Indya played her alto. Both of them were given some tips by Zac as sax is his instrument of choice. Finally, Shayne from Noosa District HS let it be known that drums were her thing. She had been playing since she was 3 and is for the most part self-taught. All in all, music is alive and well in our young children. Music brings so many benefits to our communities that I don’t understand why there isn’t a greater emphasis on integrating music into the mainstream curriculum. We need more State and Local Government funding to make this a reality. Vote 1: Music.

Kids ESS FUNDRAISING FOR DROUGHT With farmers all over Australia struggling in the grip of one of the greatest droughts in recent times, the teachers and staff at Eumundi agreed it was time to lend a hand. The school’s families donated silver coins to be changed into cash and sent it in to the Premier’s Drought Relief program. Each class lined up all of their donated silver coins end to end, and then measured the total distance. Each class also tallied their fundraising efforts to help the drought-affected farmers.

We would like to sincerely thank everyone from our wonderful community for giving so generously to this important cause.

CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL Leanne Staff, Cooroy The Noosa Pengari Steiner School in Doonan created yet another vibrant children’s festival on Sunday, showcasing the lovely school grounds and promoting the school ethos. This year was no exception, with a strong sustainability drive, the school’s recycling efforts were rewarded with just one general waste wheelie bin filled. After a day where hundred’s of families were entertained with live music performances, arts and crafts, bubble soccer and an appetising array of organic, vegetarian and vegan foods, the recycling contribution by patrons definitely paid off.

Photos: Leanne Staff

The winning class, 4B achieved an amazing distance of 64.63m! Meanwhile, the class which raised the highest total amount of money was also 4B with $588! We are very pleased to announce that the total amount of money donated was $4,168.95!

FIT KIDS GIVEN S P O R T I N G C H A N C E Noosa Leisure Centre has launched a new Fit Kids program for children aged three to eight. Living EUMUNDI’S YURT – A PLACE FOR BODY MIND & SPIRIT

Jodie Mudgway, Eumundi

A Yurt is best known as a demountable dwelling the nomadic, pastoral people of Mongolia call home. Measuring roughly 6m in diameter, these circular tent-like buildings are constructed with a collapsible timber frame made of native willow wood covered by and insulated with animal skins and furs usually sourced from their own herd of goats or camels. The seasons in Mongolia are harsh, and the beauty of the yurt is that while it can be lived in year round, it can be quickly dismantled and relocated when it’s time for the owner to move on to greener pastures. After teaching yoga for several years in community halls, in 2008 I started searching for a venue of my own to teach in, specifically a space that was cosy, warm and inviting - and one that had a sort of sacredness to it. I had been researching demountable buildings online when I first came across the concept of the yurt and soon after found a guy in Byron Bay who was importing them from Mongolia. As soon as I walked into one he had already erected, I knew I’d found the space I was looking for. At the start of 2009, with the help of friends and community, my own yurt went up near Eumundi. With 177 timber poles required for

the ceiling alone, it was a little like putting together a giant meccano set, and while its framework is still willow wood, this yurt is covered in canvas and insulated with felt instead of furs and animal skins. At nearly twice the size of the average Mongolian yurt, construction took about a week, although I’ve heard it can be done much quicker. It’s nearly 10 years since the yurt went up and despite torrential rains, heat waves, cyclonic conditions and some fairly cold winters, it is still standing strong. For most of that time too, I’ve been teaching weekly yoga classes, offering Zen Thai Shiatsu sessions and hosting women’s circles. It continues to evolve more and more each year from yoga studio to a centre of education for body, mind and spirit.

Dr Sarah Rose

We want to know about you, not just your teeth.

Strike team from left: Geoff Garley, Doonan First Officer Mark Smith and Ian Poad. The fire season has kicked off early this year on the Sunshine Coast due to the extended dry period we’ve had over winter. This coupled with the recent westerly winds have increased the fire danger to Very High. Frosts out west have killed off a lot of the grass so the fuel is 100% dry and plentiful. There have been a number of large fires in our surrounding areas recently. But luckily Doonan and the Hinterland region has not seen a great increase in call outs in our immediate area yet. Doonan currently has 24 active volunteers and sent two strike

teams (six fire fighters) out to support the Kingaroy Fire Brigade in the past two weeks. The crews were kept very busy offering back up support to the local crews that have been run off their feet with bush fires and deliberately lit fires throughout the South Burnett. To prepare for fire season Hinterland residents should keep their gutters clean, minimise vegetation growing over and around their houses, keep long grass slashed, remove any unnecessary fuel from around their houses and ensure there is good clear access for us if a fire should occur near their house.

V E R R I E R D A L E S AY S T H A N K S The Verrierdale Fire Brigade has lost three of its officers through retirement this year. They were: Trevor Venning (1st. Officer) with 29 years of service, Colleen Ehreberg (2nd. Officer) with 28 years of service, Roy Jones (4th Officer) with 17 years of service. The Verrierdale Community would like to thank them for their dedication, day and night to the Community. This will be a great loss to the Rural Fire Service, losing their local knowledge of the area and their expertise. The brigade had an afternoon get together for them to wish them well in their retirement. We are all sad to see them go. Verrierdale Rural Fire Brigade is looking for new members. They’re holding skills days on the fourth Sat every month. For more info contact Fire Warden Sirah 0403 843 528. Remember we are all volunteers & need all the help we can get. 17

VA L E D O U G P O R T E R

On 16 August we lost Robert Ian Loudon: a grandfather, a father, a brother, a son, a friend and a best mate. Some knew of him as Robby, some as BP Bob, and to our Eumundi community he was an inherent part of our collective identity. Bob never judged anyone, he gave everyone a fair go and he was the most generous and kind spirited man many of us had ever met. He stood up for everything we value, what we fight for and he always believed in giving someone a second chance. Bob gave hundreds of hours to our community volunteering for the Eumundi and District Community Association Inc. and volunteering as a director for ECCO Ltd. He ran the Eumundi Service Station for many years and fought hard to keep fuel in our town for the community.

Eumundi Village Pharmacist Doug Porter passed away last week. His family would like to invite the community to celebrate his life with a special day Sun 9 Sept at Caloundra Races, Sunshine Coast Turf Club, 170 Pierce Ave. Gates open 11am, Memorial 11.15am.
