Notes Editor’s note ...

I’ve had two Catbirds visit me a couple of times at the office window during production this issue... not sure what that means, but it has to be good! Catbirds are like some magical visitor to the garden… like a platypus, or a unicorn. And just when you think you spot one out of the corner of your eye, they’re gone with a rustle of green.

WHERE TO GET YOUR GREEN… We want to get the Green into the hands of more locals who want to read it.

The hinterland is full of magical creatures and views – especially at dusk and dawn, when the edges of worlds blur and seep into each other. Our readers have captured and shared some magical wintery moments in the hinterland (page 12) for us this issue. Send yours to editor@eumundigreen.com.au.

STREETSCAPE BEAUTIFIED WITH ORIGINAL ART WORKS A new project aimed at beautifying Eumundi village, as well as reflecting the hinterland’s creative community and famous markets, was unveiled last Thursday by Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) and Experience Eumundi representatives. The rubbish bins along Memorial Dr and the Caplick Way underpass now feature original artworks created by artists from across the Coast as well as nationally. Eumundi artists were also involved in the vibrant project: Murphy Campbell and Greg Beasley on the tunnel under Caplick Way, and Liz Robins on four of the Memorial Dr rubbish bins. The artworks were created during the 2017 Horizon Festival by 12 artists. Div 10 Cr Greg Rogerson said Eumundi is the one of the richest cultural towns the Coast. “Eumundi has a name for itself within the artistic realm – there’s more artists in the hinterland on the Sunshine Coast per capita there anywhere

“It is important for the residents that the town generate pride about where they live, and as a tourist destination we have to keep abreast of being that cultural town that is on display,” Cr Rogerson shared. “It’s great to see Eumundi being proactive in pushing the boundaries with art and culture; Iet’s hope we can add to that and to the vibrancy of the town [with more creative projects] in the future,” he enthused. The $10,000 street art project was curated by Eumundi’s Karen Bracher and funded by council’s Horizon Festival, as well as community groups Eumundi and District Community Organisation (EDCA), Experience Eumundi, Eumundi Chamber of Commerce and Eumundi Historical Association. Karen explained it was four years since she petitioned SCC to make the

When the project was connected to the Horizon festival though the creative endeavour gained support with Council and local community groups. “It’s an important project because it’s part of the community and part of the culture of Eumundi.” “It’s important for children – teens growing up here – wandering through the tunnel and seeing the beautiful work every day,” Ms Bracher said.

Cr Rogerson said this was the first he had heard of rubbish problems on market days and

Karen explained the underpass artworks entitled Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow are inspired by street art’s connection to community and local fauna and flora. The theme for the bin art project was sustainability, nature and peace. EDCA, ECC and Experience Eumundi chair Louise Formosa explained the reasons for doing art on the bins was to beautify the town, as well as making people more conscientious of the rubbish they make. “You usually take a bin for granted but by putting art on the bins it makes an impact and you become

In my last column I updated readers on my negotiations with TMR in relation to safety upgrades for the Eumundi Noosa Road. Following the onsite briefing with TMR, and the meeting with residents, I am pleased to confirm that TMR have agreed to fund a planning study of the entire road, while in the short term they are considering upgrading the line marking at the intersection with Cash Road to allow for a safe left/right hand turn, as well as reducing the speed limit. I am hoping we can generate enough community support to get these much needed safety

measures implemented, and encourage all locals to sign the petition at queensland. typeform.com/to/NqaSEt. Thank you to those who’ve already signed and shared it, including Vonnie Burton, who originally instigated this petition. In other local news, I was delighted to be able to showcase one of Eumundi’s attractions, the Imperial Hotel and the Eumundi Brewery, when I hosted the Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington recently. Deb and I had a quick tour of the Brewery and had lunch with

locals at the iconic destination during her visit to the region, and she was full of praise for the high standard of excellence being achieved. A special thanks to the local publican Paul for his great hospitality. Over the past week I’ve been back down in Brisbane for Budget Estimates, and I’ve had a few people ask me what it’s all about. Estimates is all about keeping check on how the various departments are spending your hard earned tax dollar. It’s an opportunity to make sure that the funding announcements made by

Government are followed through, and projects are delivered on time, and on budget. Readers will know I made no secret of my disappointment with the most recent Budget, and I will be keeping a close eye on the proposed expenditure on some of the big ticket infrastructure items planned for the southeast. With an urgent need for upgrades to local infrastructure, one of my priorities is fighting to ensure we receive our fair share, and the state’s already over-stretched coffers aren’t being raided any further at our expense.

Community E U M U N D I C WA R E P O R T Janet Millington, Eumundi Eumundi Branch of the QCWA held their annual meeting 24 July, in this their 90th year. The ladies welcomed 20 visitors and guests from the local community and QCWA Division. The meeting was chaired by Divisional President, Cynthia Daniels. President Dell Ford presented an impressive report about a very active year. Not only was a lot of effort put into repairs and refurbishment to the hall, but the ladies supported local families, made money available for membership to branches in regional areas suffering from the effects of drought, and began night meetings called Busy Chicks. The branch worked with Eumundi State School to achieve the most entries in the state for the International Study of Germany and members participated in, judged and even won, prizes in local shows and competitions. The Office Bearers this coming year are: Dell Ford as President; Flo Saunders as Vice President; Janet Millington, Secretary; Marie Weh, Treasurer; and Robin Bryan the International Officer. The outgoing officers were thanked for their work.

HINTERLAND

A misty winter morning in Belli Park. Shanna Bignell.

A beautiful winter morning. Jane Welsh, Verrierdale.

We have a bunch of tiny but very industrious spiders spinning webs in the garden near our water tanks, and the light rain we’ve had lights up their webs with beautiful droplets. The spider itself is only a few mm long - small enough that I couldn’t see any details of it with just my eyes. I needed my camera to show me what it actually looks like! I shared this pic with some spider enthusiasts, who suggested it might be a young Silver Orb Weaver, but no one could really say for sure. Shanna Bignell, Belli Park.

Sunshine Coast CPR Awareness coordinator for the Qld Ambulance Service Suzette Dakin, along with volunteers from Qld Ambulance Service and firey Tom from the Qld Fire Service, spent the day teaching the DRSABC procedure. Ms Dakin said she was impressed by the students’ behaviour, and their ability to listen, learn about D-R-S-A-B-C and to demonstrate the newly acquired CPR skills. Principal Kelly Edgar said the school children have a remarkable ability to learn and retain knowledge, and then put it into practice. “I was so proud of the children for being such awesome students today.”

Sport EUMUNDI SS CLIMBS TO TOP OF KING OF M O U N TA I N Gary Kiorgaard ESS running coach Getting a podium finish in the Pomona King of the Mountain Primary Relays is a very difficult proposition. In recent years the fields have increased dramatically with teams coming from all over SE Queensland. These days they are averaging 50-60 boys’ teams and 40-50 girls’ teams. The record was in 2010 when there was an incredible 70 boys’ teams and 60 girls’ teams. Even when you think you have a potential winning team, someone will get sick or be called away for another sporting event or occasion at the last moment. In the past, Eumundi has won the event an impressive three times. The girls way back in 1991 and the boys in 1993 and again in 1996. Since our last win we have had five podium finishes and three fourth spots. Probably our best result previously was in 2010 when our Girls Team came agonisingly close in second spot with Meg G closing in quickly at the end and our Boys Team coming third. Great achievements, but the fields were half the size of today and it was before the advent of big participation of private schools like St Thomas More, St Andrews, GSLC and Sunshine Coast Grammar.

second. Gus G was next and proved to be the surprise packet taking us to the lead. I know of at least one spectator whose eyes were full of tears of pride at this stage. Our last runner, Lui B, not only held onto this lead but was halfway down the finishing straight when the next runner turned the corner into the straight. Our winning team was presented with medallions and the Perpetual Trophy by Noosa Mayor Peter Wellington. Second place was Buderim SS and third Sunshine Beach SS. In the girls, Buderim SS got the win.

In the girls relay, our Girls No. Two Team (Sophie J, Ella S, Maggie R & Grace B) caused a minor sensation by pipping our Girls No. One Team (Indigo W, Brooke J, Neve B & Lucia O) in the finishing straight, finishing 11th and 12th respectively.

While proud of our winning boys team, we are equally proud of the other four Eumundi Teams who all finished in the top half of the field with every runner giving 100%. Our Boys No. Two Team (Hamish G, Will B, Bowen A & Billy B) finished eighth, while our Boys No. Three Team (Nathan H, Beau F, Kipp B and Willoughby S) finished 21st.

Hence I, like many around me, was beaming with pride when the Eumundi boys not only won this year’s event but left the opposition in their wake.

Eumundi’s Olivia Dolan won her first Queensland Women’s MidAmateur title at Maroochy River Golf Club recently. Olivia, who plays once a week at Noosa Golf Club and has been a member there for the last four years, claimed the title with a threeround total of 232. She defeated Jo Malone (Bribie Island) by two shots with rounds of 85-77-70.

“I didn’t think I would have a chance going into the final round being seven strokes behind the leader. I have been runner-up in this event for the last two years, so was really disappointed with a bad first round score, so to win is really exciting – not sure it has actually sunk in yet!” she said.

Last Thursday’s Eumundi heritage walk group, as part of the Noosa Alive! Festival. Have you seen plaques in and around Eumundi with the Australian Bicentennial logo? This was a project by the Eumundi Historical Association in 1988 to install 26 plaques with information about historical sites in Eumundi. Many of these indicate the location of buildings that no longer exist and who lived or worked in them. An old sign in Discover Eumundi’s foyer shows the locations of the plaques. A leaflet was also created called History Walk which had more information about the location of the plaques and visitors to the then Eumundi Museum could use it to take a self-guided walk to find them all. After various updates, a selfguided town walk leaflet was created in 2009 which people take on their own walk using the numbered map, photos and information as a guide. This leaflet then became the impetus to create a free guided heritage town walk and many groups of interested people have been taken by Discover Eumundi volunteers in the years since. Every year Discover Eumundi is part of the Noosa Alive Festival as are a number of other heritage places in the Noosa region. Last Thursday saw an enthusiastic and interested group of 14 taken on the heritage walk which started at Discover Eumundi, headed along the eastern side of Memorial Drive across to the Imperial Hotel at the northern end, then back along to where it started, ending with afternoon tea.

Outdoors QUEENSLAND GARDEN EXPO

Amber Grimley, Eumundi

The Queensland Garden Expo was held recently and has been attracting gardening folk since the first event in 1985, which attracted 300 visitors. These days over 40,000 people attend the three day festival! It goes to show that nowadays gardening is a very popular hobby. This year was again full to the brim with awesome plants, garden inspiration, tips and tools, chooks and, of course, Costa Georgiadis! The theme in the Giant Kitchen Garden this year was beneficial insects, or “Bennies” for short. These are super important to have around if you want a garden that looks after itself with fewer pests, as they love to munch on aphids, caterpillars and the like, and of course they pollinate flowers. Bennies include bees, wasps, spiders, ladybirds, mantids, lacewings, dragonflies, flies, hoverflies and centipedes, just to name a few. To attract these to your garden you must give them food and shelter. Planting flowers and letting veggies and herbs flower will hopefully bring some in. Try and have something always flowering in your garden all year round. To give them a home to live so that they stick around you can make a “Bug Hotel”. There was a Bug Hotel in the making at the Garden Expo that people, especially kids, could add bits and pieces to. This demonstrated just how easy it is to build your bugs a home! They look groovy too. Certainly a talking point in your garden. Materials used for a bug hotel include pieces of bamboo cut and laid horizontally with the holes facing out, sticks, chunks of wood with holes drilled in them, a tin can filled with mud/clay, seed pods and straw. So why not bring the Bennies into your garden? It’s a win/win situation!

The gentle dentist you will love!

The Low St fire was reportedly deliberately lit, damaging a fence and shed. The police were also called to the disturbance when volunteer brigade members were verbally abused by a resident. The Sunshine Coast Council invasive pest plants inspection program, designed to monitor the presence and extent of

invasive plants across the region, is currently under way in Eumundi, Doonan and Eerwah Vale. Invasive plants listed in the Biosecurity Act 2014 will be targeted, including Groundsel bush, Rat’s Tail grasses, Parthenium and Salvinia. Council officers will conduct inspections of privately owned land on properties with land size equal to or greater than 4000m2. Officers will inspect properties to confirm the presence or absence of invasive plants, monitor the effectiveness of control measures being undertaken, collect samples and provide information and education to help property owners with control these weeds.
