Our community has been knocked about this past fortnight with too many road accident tragedies. It’s really hit us hard, but it’s a big reminder to not take what we have for granted and tell the people we love they’re awesome. The way we hinterlanders rally for each other in times of crisis is truly awe inspiring. Also the sense of community in our village has been wonderful with so many locals working to make our patch a better – plastic free, re-usable – place. And the community came out in droves to support the inaugural Hinterland Craft Beer Festival and celebrate with Eumundi Brewery. My sense of community pride is swelling - near bursting.

Business BEER LOVERS UNITE IN EUMUNDI The streets of Eumundi were awash with beer last Saturday at the inaugural Hinterland Craft Beer festival. Imperial Hotel and Eumundi Brewery manager Paul Thomas said the impetus for the festival was to celebrate the popularity of craft brewing across the Coast. “It’s really all about bringing all of these brewers together to celebrate beer!” Top brewers from across the Sunshine Coast - including Land & Sea Brewing, Copperhead Brewery, Macleod Brewing, Sunshine Brewery, Sunshine Coast Brewery, Brouhaha Brewery, Stalwart Brewing and of course, Eumundi Brewery - shared their craft brews with near to a thousand beer lovers. At the Q & A session, the brewers gave the crowd an insight into what makes their beers unique and why they are passionate about brewing. Business EUMUNDI MARKETS EMBRACES PLASTIC FREE The ban of single-use and biodegradable bags officially kicked in across Queensland this month and the Eumundi Business community has embraced the change. With Eumundi Markets attracting 1.6 million tourists and 600 stalls - at Original Eumundi Markets (OEM) alone - annually, this country village gets more visitors than any other destination on the Sunshine Coast. OEM manager Jan Ammitzboll shared that during busy holiday periods they easily fill up to 25 land fill bins plus 15 recycle bins on Saturdays. Jan shared stallholders have embraced the change from single use bags. “Most loved the idea and realise it’s for the benefit of all especially our children and our planet.”

The tragic death of a father on Eumundi Noosa Road last week has strengthened calls for an urgent upgrade of this busy arterial road. I had previously raised the issue with TMR, and will be meeting onsite with the District Director this week to progress a planning study the department is currently undertaking.
A number of residents have previously flagged concerns about this stretch of road, in particular the intersection with Cash Road. I recently received a petition from locals calling for an upgrade to this intersection, and this has formed part of my discussions with TMR. Questions have also been raised about the intersection with Grays Road, as well as the need to review the speed limit, and the installation of guardrails, following a number of serious accidents over the years, and this latest tragedy. In the aftermath of a disappointing State Budget for our local area, residents have also been asking for an update on the Seib Road Bridge.
With the State Government failing to commit any funding, I am working with Council to get money allocated in their upcoming Budget review. Cr Rogerson has indicated his support for the project, so I will continue to lobby hard for this important project that has plenty of community support. Speaking of the Budget, to say it failed to deliver for our region is an understatement. Not only did it fail to deliver on local infrastructure projects, it also failed to address the state’s crippling debt crisis. The state is on a downward spiral to reach a record debt bomb of $83 billion, and locally, we are facing an infrastructure funding shortfall of $234 million, at the expense of the inner city and South Brisbane As our local population increases to grow, it is imperative we fight for our fair share of infrastructure spending, particularly when it comes to roads, and the safety of motorists and pedestrians.

Noosa Council will spend $60,000 in its draft 2018/19 budget to give Cooroora Woodworkers Cottage and Tinbeerwah Hall a fresh coat of paint. The Hall will also receive $50,000 for new flooring. Construction is underway on the new concrete Mary River Rd Bridge at Cooroy. It will have a higher load limit for increased freight traffic, plus bicycle lanes. During construction, a detour will be in place for motorists via Emerald St, Garnet St & Sportsground Pde. Pedestrians can walk via Mill Place & Lower Mill Rd or through Apex Park and Cooroy sporting complex. 8
At around 3.15pm on 24 June, there was a traffic crash on Eumundi-Noosa Rd, Eumundi. I was the first emergency service responder at the scene and what I witnessed was something I have never seen in my 18 years of policing. There were cars stopped all over the road, facing all directions and there were people everywhere. Some people were warning oncoming vehicles of the dangers ahead, some were directing traffic, some were comforting persons involved or witnesses to the traffic crash, and some were trying to extract the driver of one of the vehicles. To respect the persons involved in the crash and their families, I will not go into the details of what caused the crash, as that is still being investigated. But what I will say is that I was blown away by members of our community and tourists that came together to do whatever they could to assist at this critical time. I thank you all for your assistance that day; it was amazing and invaluable. At the scene there was an off-duty doctor, nurse, fire fighter, and police officers, as well as a variety of other people who wanted to help in any way they could. A 13 year-old child was cared for and attended to by complete strangers whilst emergency services and members of the community worked on trying to save his father. Unfortunately, we were not able to save him. 44 year-old Jamie Bird died at that scene on Eumundi Noosa
Rd leaving behind his wife and three children. I can only imagine what a relief it must have been for the family that their son, husband, father and friend died whilst surrounded by people who did their very best to comfort him, working as hard as they could to try and save his life. With the school holidays upon us I want this tragedy to be a reminder of the potential dangers that lie ahead every single time you enter a vehicle. This family were travelling from Brisbane to Noosa to enjoy the school holiday break. In just a moment, something happened in the blink of an eye that has now changed the lives of so many people. Jamie’s wife is now a widow, his children will grow up without their father, his parents have lost a son, many people have lost a friend. The emergency service personnel and members of the community who assisted will carry with them the sadness of the tragedy they witnessed for the rest of their lives. I ask that you think of this next time you go to look at your mobile phone whilst driving, just don’t do it. If you are tired, pull over for a break. If your children are distracting you, stop at a park and let them burn off some energy. Wear your seatbelt. Don’t speed. Don’t drink or do drugs and drive. There is no valid excuse for engaging in irresponsible and risky driving behaviour that could potentially cause a traffic crash that would destroy the lives of so many people.

The initiative actually began after World War II when country women in Queensland became convinced that understanding other cultures our similarities and differences
- would help prevent war in the future. Branches began to lead their communities in exploring other lands. Of course, in 1945 information was not as easy to find as it is today. FREE BAGS IN THE VILLAGE Boomerang Bags Eumundi celebrated the ban of single use and biodegradable bags in their community by giving away around 100 fabric bags on Memorial Dr last Sunday. Made at sewing bees by volunteers using donated fabric, the bags are an alternative to using plastic. One of Eumundi Boomerang Bags organisers, Alice Jones, shared she hopes people will go further by banning plastic use all together. “It’s a big ask, but we think
Eumundi is up to the challenge.” “Changing how locals shop in their village by packing their own reusable bags – or picking up a Boomerang Bag in one of the stores – is the first step.” The Boomerang Bag concept is based on local communities getting together to create a sustainable bag as an alternative to plastic. The idea is the bags can then be reused – or returned to be used by someone else over and over again.

S T U D E N T S C AT C H B O O M E R A N G Good Shepherd Lutheran College (GSLC) Year 8 students prepared for the banning of plastic bags by producing reuseable Boomerang Bags made from recycled fabric as a part of their Textiles Technology unit. The bags will be used at the upcoming GSLC Fair. Sue Jansen, Head of Food and Textiles Technology at GSLC, said the inclusion of a sustainable option for plastic bags was a natural progression for her Year 8 students as they learn about the impact of single-use bags and explore their place in our preferred future. “As the concept of sustainability is embedded in the curriculum I was looking for relevant and engaging ways of including the topic in our classroom. In Year 7, as a part of their Food Technology unit, students study food packaging and the impact on the
environment and create, as a part of their studies, a litter free lunch box,” Sue explained. The inclusion of the Boomerang Bags into students’ learning about environmental sustainability, as well as learning the practical skills of sewing, means that Boomerang Bags will be here to stay at the school. Sue shared she will now be holding weekly workshops after school where parents, grandparents, friends and family can work together to create the bags.

Arts D E E P LY F E LT A R T The Green recently caught up with Gympie High School teacher Zela Bissett whose passion for felting and her textural works is currently on display at Wan’din’in Arts Space behind Discover Eumundi and runs until Saturday 28 July. Her exhibition Deeply Felt shows an artist’s journey in reconciling two apparently disparate media: wool felt and cast paper. The rich colours and textures of wool and silk contrast with the earthy feel of hand-made botanical papers and delicate embroidery. When did you first discover felt? At The Vital Years Steiner Education conference in 2002. This event was held in Pennant Hills, Sydney and a lady called Lana ran a workshop and told us where to obtain wool tops.
to create? A large piece of felt takes several hours to complete. It is a wet process and the piece than has to dry over a few days.
Where do you find your inspiration for this latest exhibition? My inspiration comes from the natural world around me and many of the garments in the show take their names from particular places, like the Bunya Cloak, and The Evil Gimpi-Gimpi. Where do you hail from on the Coast? I live in Gympie where I teach at the local High School.
Why is this your creative medium of choice? Felt is an amazingly light but warm textile. It also lends itself to combining with other fabrics including silk and fine cotton cloth. Felt can be attached to these fibres by a process called nunofelting.

With the ban on single use plastic bags kicking in this month across Queensland, the challenge is to try and eradicate more plastic from your home. Bee wax wraps are a good alternative for storing food. They’re reusable and easy to make at home using cotton fabric cast offs you’ve been stashing away waiting for the perfect project. The simplest way to make wraps is with bee wax only. But these wraps don’t self-adhere well. To compensate, use rubber bands or a larger piece of fabric folded over itself. The more complicated bee wax recipe is much stickier because it includes pine resin tree sap, (also called pine reson, colophony or Greek pitch) that you can source online. Most recipes also add jojoba oil to soften the wrap. Sometimes they include canola oil or coconut oil too. You can find recipes to suit online. You can also buy the Devine family’s beautiful Bee Eco Wraps at the Original Eumundi Markets or online (beeecowraps.com). Berkelouw Books and All Things Bees & Honey in Eumundi also have wraps for sale. There’s actually a shortage of
bee’s wax on the Coast at the moment with local suppliers and retailers struggling to keep up with demand, but Gayle at All Things Bees & Honey can hook you up as she has 30 of her own hives in the hinterland – so the wax is lovely and local too.
Ingredients • 100% cotton fabric squares • About a cup of grated beeswax • Cheese grater (if wax comes in a chunk) • Iron • Old towel or blanket that you don’t mind getting waxy • A few sheets of grease proof paper • Clothes horse (for drying) • Pinking shears or rotary cutter with a wavy blade.
Method Wash, dry and iron fabric. Measure and cut a few different sizes and make a bigger 30cm one for bread etc. Lay down your towel and heat up the iron. Place two sheets of greaseproof paper onto the towel, then lay a cotton square on top. Evenly sprinkle beeswax on fabric - right to the edges. Place two more sheets of
greaseproof paper on top of wax and cotton square, then iron. Peel back paper to check wax has melted evenly. Sprinkle more wax on any bare spots needing more then replace paper and iron again. Peel fabric off the paper and hang to dry. They will be floppy while warm but once they cool they become harder, yet pliable. Beeswax will naturally be stickier when hotter and more rigid when cold.
Using wraps • Cover bowl or food with wrap and use warmth of hands to mold into shape. The wraps stick to ceramic/glass and itself. • Hand wash with cold or luke warm water and a mild detergent/ soap. Hang to dry. • Perfect for cheese, vegetables, fruit, sandwiches and snacks. • Not suitable for meat or wet food like watermelon. • Store flat or rolled. • Store in a sealed container or drawer so they don’t get dusty. • Wraps last six – 12 months before re-waxing. • Not designed for hot or drippy foods.

Just as I reach the last stone, the murky green moss causes me to slip. The water, as cold as freshly melted ice, refreshes me after a scorching hot day. I realise how lucky I am to have such beautiful natural features around me in my hinterland backyard.

Last year I shared my chicken pie recipe and I’ve been asked to also share the beef version. You can make it with chunky beef (or you can use mince if that’s what you have to hand). This hearty pie is another winter staple for my family (it lasts for two meals). I double the recipe to make mini pies for freezing for work lunches or emergency meals. This is the first time I’ve written down the recipe so measurements aren’t exact – add extra to suit your own taste. Add more or less as you see fit. Serve with steamed or roasted winter veggies, gravy home made. Ingredients • 500 grams diced chuck steak (or 500g of beef mince) • 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced • ½ small turmeric root, thinly sliced (optional) • 2 carrots, sliced • 1 large onion, thinly sliced • 2 potatoes chopped into chunks with skin on (not too small) • 8 large button mushrooms, sliced • 3 cups good quality beef stock • 3 tsp beef gravox (optional) • 2 tblsp plain (wholemeal) flour • 4 shakes of Worchester sauce (add more to taste) • 2 shakes of tomato sauce (add more to taste) • Pinch of sea salt • Nob of butter • Olive oil • 3 sheets of puff pastry (make your own if you want to be fancy) • 1 egg, beaten
Method Defrost (make) pastry, keeping covered with a tea towel so it doesn’t dry out. Preheat oven to 180°C. In a pot add diced potato and cover with water on the stove. Cook until just soft. Remove from the heat, pour out water and give the potatoes a shake in the pot to crumble the edges – this adds to the thickness of the pie gravy. In a large, heavy based pot, fry diced onion with some of the butter and a splash of olive oil. Once glassy and beginning to golden, remove from pot. Add another splash of olive oil (if needed), then cook the steak. Once coloured on one side, turn and add garlic and turmeric (optional). Once steak is cooked through, add carrots and mushrooms. When steak begins to colour, add cooked onion and potatoes then stir through. Pour stock over ingredients until just covering (you may have stock left over). Add the Worchester and tomato sauce, then stir in. Once bubbling, turn heat down to a simmer. Allow to simmer for approx. 15
5 mins before adding 1 tblsp flour and the 3 tsp of gravox. Stir to thicken and remove any lumps – if sauce is still quite thin, add more flour and stir in – if too thick add any extra stock. Remove from the heat to cool slightly. Grease a pie dish with butter (you can also use a small baking dish), then cover with a sheet of pastry – right up to the rim leaving a decent edge. Cut pieces off the second sheet to fill any spaces. Using a pastry brush (or fork), spread a little egg mix along pastry rim. Pour mixture into pie case. Place the third sheet of pastry over the top. Twist the pastry lid and case together right around the edge, then cut two slits into the lid. Use any leftover pastry to decorate the top, then paint lid with egg mix. Place in the oven at the bottom to cook. After 15 mins, turn the pie and check the lid isn’t burning - reduce heat if need be. Check again after 10 mins, then every 5. Once the top is beautifully golden it’s ready to serve.

I like big Butts and I cannot lie! I’m talking about the Blackbutt though - or Eucalyptus pilularis - to be botanical. The Blackbutt is a beautiful gum tree which is very common in the Eumundi region. There’s a very special specimen at the entrance to Eumundi’s Sunken Garden on Pacey St. This particular tree must be over 200 years old (but don’t quote me on that). It has been snapped off many times by winds and this has created many hollows for the birds and animals. Often you can see cockatoos and lorikeets squawking at each other from one hollow to the next! Noisy neighbours! This is also a special indigenous scar tree. The Blackbutt is so called as the ‘butt’ of the tree is covered in persistent rough bark while the top half sheds its bark to reveal a smooth trunk. The rough bark of the butt can often be seen as charred after a fire, hence the term blackbutt. The Blackbutt occurs from coastal southern NSW north to Fraser Island here in QLD. It has a beautiful pale timber and is often used in flooring and decking. Due to it being a high-quality timber tree, it is rare to find very large specimens of this tree left in the wild. The town Blackbutt, the “Timber Town” of the South Burnett, is named after this tree. The Blackbutt is also a favourite food tree of the Koala. Eumundi Conservation Park has a trail called the Blackbutt Trail which can be accessed from Eumundi-Noosa Road or Seib Rd. This trail winds through Blackbutt tall open forest and
there is a lovely dam where you can stop for a picnic. I recommend doing this walk on the holidays with the kids. It’s beautiful and very close to Eumundi. Why not start the day with a walk in Eumundi’s forest? Also, if you get a chance, go and visit the big Blackbutt at the Sunken Garden. It’s quite magnificent. Stand quietly beneath her and listen. You may hear or see the dwellers of the tree. You can even pop inside, amongst the spiders, and hide. She even has boobs! We live in a very special area - our own little piece of paradise - with our funky town, beautiful community and special wildlife. While development will always impact on our unique wildlife, there are ways that we can help preserve what we still have. The variety of animals, reptiles and birds we see continues to enthral locals and visitors alike, and it’s something we are trying to maintain. But unfortunately, there is a threat to our local wildlife. The Indian Myna is a highly aggressive introduced species which evicts native animals and birds from their nests and tree hollows. In fact, they can totally exclude all other birds, and in time you may be left with a garden full of only Indian Mynas! This bird is prolific and can raise multiple clutches annually of four to five chicks per clutch. It congregates in large numbers leaving smelly droppings and can pose a risk to human health as the Myna carries bird mite (causing severe itching and rashes) and can harbour avian diseases such as psittacosis and salmonellosis. Indian Mynas do not migrate. Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) is running an Indian Myna control project. It involves trapping the birds in specially developed
cages, which have been successfully designed to target the Mynas’ behaviour and habits. All handling of the birds is carried out humanely at all times by SCC, under the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001. One of the obstacles facing the trapping program is intervention by domestic animals. Naturally the Mynas will not come near a trap if the food provided is eaten by cats, or if they see cats in the vicinity. While traps need to be placed in suitable locations, the project is ineffective when sabotaged by roaming pets. Pet owners please be aware that under Council’s bylaws pets need to be contained to their property at all times. Wandering cats for example can attract a number of fines for their owners, initially $252! – many residents are not aware of this.
