Notes

A HINTERLAND MOMENT Editor’s note ... For the past couple of weeks there’s been a definite chill in the air. And while some have felt it more than others, I’m glad for the opportunity to get the woollens out of storage, find the flannel, snuggle under a doona and light the fire without feeling guilty.

BINGO WITH A DIFFERENCE! Melony Brests and Sall Monalla will once again host a jaunty night of bingo for a good cause. Supporting local and international Rotary projects.Previous Drag Queen Bingo event was sold out. Join in the outrageous fun on Saturday 9th June Joe’s Waterhole, Memorial Dr, Eumundi. Dinner and show is $40 Bingo books are 3 for $5 Dinner from 6pm, Balls drop at 7.30pm.

This issue the Green focuses on some of the many business events and news in the hinterland region. There’s lots to keep us entertained around the traps too, with pages dedicated to cultural offerings.

Event restricted to over 18 as drag queens will behave badly.

Bookings essential. 5442 8144 or joeswaterholeoffice@gmail.com

Business PRIDE IN LOCAL WORKPLACES RECOGNISED A crowd of 120 people was on hand on Thursday 10 May at Joe’s Waterhole to congratulate the 23 finalists and five winners at the annual Pride of Work awards hosted by The Rotary Club of Eumundi. The five locals were recognised for going the extra mile to meet the responsibilities and challenges of their job. President of the Club Peter Syson said, “Tonight’s Pride of Work awards went to five outstanding individuals who during the last year have demonstrated high achievement at work through outstanding service, attitude and presentation. “The 23 finalists were nominated by customers, colleagues, owners of business enterprises or from community entities.” Rockcote’s Chris Cameron was a stand-out presenter as she outlined the basis of the success of their international multi-million dollar enterprise with its factory at Yandina built from scratch and now selling environmentally friendly renders and paints across the world. Chris emphasised the essential nature of values that has underlined trust and loyalty

Local businesses are encouraged to attend the Small Business Week Breakfast at the Maroochy RSL Club to network with other likeminded businesses as part of Queensland Small Business Week. Hosted by the Sunshine Coast Chamber Alliance on Wednesday 30 May from 6.30am, it will include the launch of the 2018 Sunshine Coast Business Awards. Deputy Mayor

Tim Dwyer will be attending and encourages businesses to come together and celebrate the growing success of our region. Guests will hear inspiring stories from winners of the 2017 Awards including Kendell Moreton (Home Care Assistance), Will Shrapnel (HeliMods) and Matt Hepburn (Your Mates Brewing Co.), along with projects the Chamber Alliance will be

progressing this year. Chair of the Awards management committee Jennifer Swaine said, “Several local winners go on to win higher accolades, such as Hinterland Feijoas, who recently placed in the Produce Awards for Queensland and will now go through to national judging.” To book visit sunshinecoast chamberalliance.com.au.

WASTE FACILITY EXPANDS FOR POPULATION GROWTH Plans to expand the Nambour Landfill have been given the tick of approval to help Sunshine Coast Council strategically and sustainably manage the waste generated by our growing population. The proposal, endorsed by councillors at the 17 May Ordinary Meeting, includes a generation plant that will convert methane gas produced by the landfill into electricity to supply the local power grid. Council believes the extension of the landfill will secure the region’s waste disposal needs by at least 22 years. There is also scope for future uses to include a resource recovery centre, an environmental education facility, recycled goods shop and other associated 6

uses related to council’s waste management strategy. Planning Portfolio Councillor Christian Dickson said the approval showed that council was prepared to make the necessary decisions today to ensure our future waste management needs will be met. “As outlined in the SEQ Regional Plan, the State Government has estimated that the Sunshine Coast will be home to 493,000 residents by 2041,” Cr Dickson said.

Division 9 Councillor Steve Robinson said a number of changes were made to the application in response to submissions received from the public, including placing conditions on the approval to address environmental and amenity concerns. “As with all development applications, the landfill application was thoroughly assessed on its individual merits.

“The expansion addresses the need to manage waste in the most cost-effective and sustainable way, which supports our vision on delivering Australia’s leading healthy, smart and creative region – for today and for generations to come,” Cr Dickson explained.

“To ensure transparency and integrity of the assessment process, this application was assessed by an independent third-party agency and the relevant state government agencies,” Cr Robinson said.

Business OUR VILLAGE DEVELOPMENT Interest in the proposed Eumundi Our Village development at the top end of Memorial Dr have been rekindled recently, following the posting of new signs at the site. The signage contains information on the nature of the project and how people can make submissions to Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) by 22 June regarding potential impact. Though these signs were a council requirement (due to the proposal being impact accessible) project spokesperson Louise Formosa for the Formosa family is supportive of the public consultation process. “This is a great opportunity for the community to voice their support and/or concerns regarding the proposal and Council are able to take these opinions into account when they make their decision to approve or refuse it,” Louise shared. While there has been talk the development may be stymied due to heritage concerns, Louise is adamant this isn’t an issue. “The allotment is within

a neighbourhood character overlay under the planning scheme. It is not heritage listed and it not subject to a heritage overlay.” Despite this, Louise said the Formosa Family are eager to repurpose as much of the existing building as possible and give it a new life. Such work though will have to wait until after the public notification period finishes and SCC makes a decision on the project. If the SCC does give the green light, Louise said the viability of the proposal will come down to the conditions placed on the approval and whether agreement can be reached on contributions to the cost of the proposed roundabout at the intersection of Napier Rd and Caplick Way. “So, it’s still going to be quite a wait until we can let the community know if the proposal can go ahead or not.”

Division 10

The much loved Dick Caplick Park playground has been expanded to include an impressive new climbing structure and slide, which is sure to catch the eye of children, parents and grandparents alike! The upgrades also include a custom barbeque shelter, seating, pathways and landscaping. The greens and browns, timber elements and rope features within the new playground really fit in nicely with the surrounding area. The new playground space fits well with my philosophy of making Eumundi a destination for tourists and residents 365 days a year, rather than just the two market days of Wednesday and Saturday. Casino an unnecessary evil There’s been a lot of conjecture and controversy regarding a casino possibly coming to the Sunshine Coast. Despite the fact no formal steps have been taken, its already proving a divisive topic, with many locals keen to voice their opinions both for and against a casino being included in the new Maroochydore CBD if a State Government Integrated Resort Development (IRD) license was granted. Federal Member for Fisher, Andrew Wallace MP recently convened a meeting to discuss this issue. Most attendees appeared strongly against a casino and it’s easy to understand why when you look at the impacts gambling already has in our region. Last year alone the Sunshine Coast racked up a $150 million

gambling loss across our 70 gaming venues which contain 3,500 machines. I can’t even begin to imagine how much this already disturbing figure blow out if a casino came here. Not to mention the terrible social impacts which are associated with problem gambling. Sure, there’s an argument for the positive employment and tourism impacts a casino would bring, but for a region which strives to be healthy, smart and creative, I don’t believe a casino has any place in this vision. Rolling out the red carpet Hollywood came to Nambour on Saturday 19 May when the red carpet was rolled out in Currie St for the soon-to-bereleased Australian horror film Boar. This movie is produced and directed by born and bred Nambour local Christopher Lee Sun, who has already collected more than 70 international film awards as a writer, producer and director. Boar was filmed in bushland around the Sunshine Coast and Gympie and is about a 14ft killer pig! Its cast includes John Jarratt of Wolf Creek fame, Bill Moseley from Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Ernie Dingo from Crocodile Dundee and Simone Buchanan from Hey Dad. The event included a special red carpet walk by cast members in Currie St, followed later in the evening by a premiere screening of Boar at the Majestic Cinemas.

SevGen Indigenous group will host their third Dance Out Domestic & Family Violence event, Fri 25 May, 11am. Amma Reed (a descendant of King Bungaree, Matthew Flinders’ guide) will lead the ceremony. Bingo books are three for $5. Last year was a sell out so bookings essential. 54428 144 or joeswaterholeoffice@ gmail.com. Music SOUND CROWD – SING OUT LOUD

Cheryl Webb, Eumundi

Music is a universal language. That was certainly true recently when Sound Crowd – Sing Out Loud had its debut gathering at The Imperial with around 100 would-be vocalists turning out. Our musical shepherds for the evening were Eumundi locals Analiese and Mike Long, who coaxed young and old alike to put their inhibitions aside and join together for an evening singing and drinking at this over 18’s event. As Analiese explained, “Singing in a group can be a powerful and an exhilarating thing, and when there is safety in numbers it’s amazing how vocal embarrassment just disappears.” With such a good turnout, I was interested to find out what had motivated people to come along. Friends Simone and Rebecca had heard about the event on Facebook and, although not locals, they figured it would be a night of fun. Both had been involved in music at an early age and really liked the concept. Young local Maia was also eager to have a sing. “I haven’t sung for a while and thought it would be good to make a start again.” But what song to sing? Analiese and Mike chose well. Crowded House was on the menu. “Weather With You” is well known; has a basic melody with harmonies, and a killer, repetitive chorus. In my experience it’s very difficult to get inexperienced singers to

stick to their harmonies when the melody appears, but clearly the Eumundi crowd are very musical because harmony and melody did exist and there was much rejoicing in the streets. By the time interval arrived, the choir had mastered the song and were desperate to lubricate those voices with a tankard or two. I caught Analiese as she came off stage and she was clearly pleased with the turnout and the positivity in the room. She and Mike had been to a few pub choirs both here and overseas and they were keen to start a choir themselves. The stars must been aligned because The Imperial management also wanted to host a pub choir and approached the couple. X-factor, The Voice and Australia’s Got Talent watch out, because every second Wednesday of each month Eumundi will have THE best voices in the country. Come sing out loud with the crowd. facebook: Sound Crowd - sing out loud

Books A T I M E LY L O O K AT V I O L E N C E A G A I N S T W O M E N Leela Rottman, Eumundi Bookclub This year, the Eumundi Book Club is reading books that raise feminist issues in complex and meaningful ways. Recently, we tackled Emily Maguire’s An Isolated Incident (shortlisted for both the Stella and Miles Franklin literary awards), a novel with both an original and female-centric story. An Isolated Incident opens as Chris Rogers, a young woman from a small rural town, learns of the tragic rape and murder of her sister Bella. Shocked and grief-stricken, she’s shaken by harsh police questioning and struggles to cope with awkward friends and nosy neighbours. Crime journalist May Norman arrives from the city to get her scoop and finds a town bristling with hostility. Maguire builds her story skilfully, swapping between the perspectives of Chris and May. Outsider May is shocked by the town’s poverty, yet eager to capitalise on its hard-luck atmosphere. She wants to be Chris’s friend, yet is determined to dig up “dirt” for her story. We’re never sure of May’s true motives. In contrast, Chris’s voice is raw with a tangible rage. She’s the sort of person who tells

it like it is. Young people in Strathdee, Chris says, have few expectations. They grow up thinking they’re not quite up to scratch. “At school,” Chris says, “we had an expression: Strathdee good. It meant that something was tops by Strathdee standards, but not much chop compared to anything you’d get outside of here.” Strathdee is indeed a place of haves and have-nots. Once a thriving farming community, it’s now an out of the way stop for truckers and tourists. And there’s a troubling culture amongst the men in Strathdee. Nate, Chris’s ex-husband, has a history of domestic violence, a common crime in the town. Chris is labelled a “slut”, while Bella’s “purity” is considered a magnet for rapists. When May is sexually harassed, the local constable dismisses the man as

Also compelling is a march organised by Sydney activist group Femolition. The protest is well-meaning but misses the point. To Chris, hundreds of people crying over a woman they never knew is ludicrous. The protest makes no political demands and becomes nothing but a pointless venting of outrage. The public can move on, but Chris will feel the pain of Bella’s loss forever. An Isolated Incident tells us to wake up and look at the bigger picture. Misogyny and sexual violence are not unique to Strathdee but are inherent to Australian society. If we want change, we need meaningful discussion and action. The rawness of Chris’s grief sharpens this message and is, in the end, what makes this a truly outstanding novel.

Kids M A R C H PA S T S T R O N G T R A D I T I O N Fiona Bastow, Eumundi Netball Club president/coach

“Candice provides no nonsense, direct and to the point advice which enables you as the client to make informed and timely decisions. Thanks for your help Candice during what is a frustrating process” TONY, MOUNTAIN CREEK.

We will help you with: • parenting arrangements • financial support for you and your children • property arrangements on separation • obtaining a divorce We are located in Noosaville but will happily travel from Gympie to Caloundra to meet with our clients.

We offer an initial FREE half hour consultation.

It was almost as if the weather knew to herald the official start of the junior winter netball season by giving us our first really chilly blast of the year - it felt as though the icy wind was calling out, “Wake up everyone, Saturday morning winter netball has arrived!” With foggy breath and goose bumps on legs, 36 excited Eumundi girls huddled with their teammates to join the wider netball community of over 400 players in the long-held tradition of the Noosa Netball District Association’s “March Past”. Mrs Lola McDonald, Patroness of the Netball Association, explained that the march has marked the opening of the season since the Association began over forty years ago. “It gives the players an opportunity to dress up proudly together - which really helps meld them into a team,” she said.

Lola, who has been playing netball since the 1950s, remembers this tradition from her youth and also acknowledges that many other sports have a similar event to bring everyone together. She said in days gone by the focus of the parade was on the players’ formation (marching in unison) and having all the uniforms exactly the same (including shoes and socks). However, over time the March Past has evolved into a more carnival-like event where the players can be very creative in their presentation. The parade was judged this year by local officials including State MP for Noosa Sandy Bolton, and Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington. All the teams did a wonderful job of interpreting their team name with creative costumes and proud chants. Our Year 6 team Eumundi Starlight’s were thrilled to be the winner in their

division this year. Eumundi has four teams again this year: our fledgling Year 3 team Storm coached by Dani Fewster; Year 4 Flames are back with Bonnie Baker at the helm; while the year 5/ 6 composite team Lightning has a new coach in Emma Annetts. I’m coaching the Starlights again, with Jude Cettou and Brittany Jones assisting all teams. We’ve seen tremendous support from all the families in the many volunteer roles - from managers to fabulous chip-frying in the kiosk! Our girls have fabulous fun with their friends playing this wonderful game … and who knows, perhaps some of them will be able to say in 70 years, just as Lola claims of the sport, that they’ve made life-long friends playing netball. Sandy Bradley, Eumundi

Stop and smell the roses! - an old cliché or just true? Life is too busy! How often do we hear that statement and how often do we say this ourselves? In our technologically advanced society, we seem to spend so much time in front of screens and too little time outdoors, barefoot in nature. As a massage practitioner working in the corporate sector, I found that so many people were largely deskbound, whether sitting or standing in front of computers, using mobile phones and catching up on social media, all spending a huge amount on screen hours. It’s very easy for us to get caught up in the busyness of work and life. In our quest to be successful in what we do and to be good, if not amazing in everything living well and nurturing the self … well that just seems to slip us by sometimes. There’s plenty of research out there that tells us time in nature makes us healthy and happy. Does having some “nature time” improve our physical and psychological functions and instil a feeling of well-being? We live in a beautiful part of the world where nature abounds, but how much time do we really sit with it, reflect, absorb and just be in nature? I am going to do a little research study on the health benefits of consciously and actively spending a small amount of time each day being in nature.

Here Is T he Little Challenge Do It If You Dare To Be Happy

The reasons for this study are personal and curious. I welcome you to be a part of the study or just to do the challenge for yourself. This is the thing... To determine the effects of nature on our body and our psyche, to facilitate positive changes in mood to make us feel more: • happy

For one month … spend at least 15 minutes a day in nature (small goals first) and try to increase to half an hour. It can be anything from walking barefoot in the park, sitting sipping a cup of tea in the autumn sunshine, a stroll along the beach, watching the beautiful sunrise and sunsets we have here in the Hinterland or just looking up and smiling at the stars. Be mindful of everything around. For the study: keep a diary and to take note of what you did, for how long and how you feel or felt. No names and addresses needed. If you are interested in being part of my study, just start and keep a diary or contact me teambradley23@gmail.com or pop in to Eumundi Massage Studio on Memorial Dr for a chat. 0413 661 809

• relaxed • calm • creative • energetic • attentive and focused Would you be up for it if you could have any or all of the above? It’s me time - it’s time to look after the self.

Relax, calm your mind, smile inside and be happy.

Breathe. Be in Nature. Balance.

Everyone seems to be busy and few people have time for complicated cooking. This Date Loaf recipe is simplicity to the extreme and one that is perfect to freeze, make several for the school fete, or just whip up when required. I have an abundance of passionfruit so I have included Lemon and Passionfruit Butter with my simple Date Loaf.

Ingredients - Lemon and Passionfruit Butter

Bake in a paper lined loaf tin for approx. 1/2 hour at 160°C.

• 1 cup lemon juice • 8 lightly beaten eggs • 4 passionfruit pulp Method Place all in a microwave proof jug or bowl and heat on medium for one minute at a time, stirring after each zap do not boil. When thickened, pour through a sieve and pour into sterilised jars. Delicious, but not for anyone avoiding sugar. I also pour this over pavlova to dress it up for a special occasion.

Slice and butter or spread with lemon butter.

Heri tage EVOLUTION OF EUMUNDI MUSEUM The Eumundi Museum started life in the two story relocated cane cutters building, now the Original Eumundi Markets office. As the museum collection increased it soon outgrew this relatively small building and when the Eumundi Uniting Church, built in 1911 as the Methodist church, came up for sale the Eumundi Historical Association (EHA) bought it and opened it as the Eumundi Museum in 1996. After an extensive survey project by the EHA in 2005 the Museum and the Eumundi Information Office, a small hut like building in Caplick Park, combined and were rebranded as Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre in 2006.

Around this time the new Eumundi police station in Napier Road was built and the old police cells were relocated to the back of Discover Eumundi. In 2008, after an internal audit

As well as being a keeping place for Eumundi’s history, Discover Eumundi now had a new role supplying visitors with maps, leaflets and other tourist information. An extension to the back of the centre was added around this time that created new heritage display space, an office, small kitchen and storage area.

Wendy Birrell, Discover Eumundi manager of the Centre’s operations, the police cells were cleared and used as a display space.

workshops and meetings, and by Discover Eumundi for temporary heritage displays.

After years of grant applications to various government entities, a successful Australian Government grant saw a new building called Wan’din’in meaning gathering of people in Kabi Kabi language - built at the rear of the Centre in 2015. This arts space is a multi purpose building available to the community for art exhibitions,

Now in 2018, after a successful grant application funded by the Sunshine Coast Council Heritage Levy, EHA is conducting another public survey and looking for your help in shaping Discover Eumundi into the future. The survey can be found atdiscovereumundi.com/survey

L I V I N G B A C K YA R D My hen is now... a rooster?

This beautiful flower, as you may know, is known as The Lady of the Night as it only opens in the evening - and the smell is wonderful. Cheers, Dom Massoni, Verrierdale

“One of my hens has started to crow and now has big wattles and long tail feathers!” This happens more frequently than you would imagine! A hen can start to show signs of being a rooster under certain circumstances - and even start to crow.

This lovely Pacific Baza visited our yard in Belli Park for about a week in late April. These medium-sized hawks enjoy eating insects, frogs, and fruit. Shanna Bignell, Belli Park

In our back dam, we have an artificial floating island covered in plants that my husband built. The island is mainly to help keep the dam water clean and healthy, but all kinds of birds love to perch on it, and sometimes turtles even climb up on it to sun themselves. This Little Pied Cormorant often hangs out in the long grass on the island. Shanna Bignell, Belli Park

A beautiful Green Catbird paid a visit to our front door recently. These bowerbirds (who ironically don’t actually build bowers) are generally pretty shy, and I usually only know they’re around if they’re calling. They have a very distinctive call - like a cat meowing, or baby crying - but this one just seemed to be checking itself out in the window reflection. Shanna Bignell, Belli Park 17

Hens that start to show signs of becoming a rooster are still ostensibly a hen, but it is very likely they’ve stopped laying. This hormonal change can occur when there is no rooster in the flock, so a dominant hen takes on the roll. Amazingly, if you then introduce a rooster into the flock, it can reverse the hormones and even start the hen laying again. However,

Kirstie Henning, North Arm

many of us cannot legally own a rooster - or we don’t want a rooster around. There are also some health issues that can cause this sex change and unfortunately this is usually the trigger. So what is physically going on inside the hen to trigger this hormonal change? Hens have two ovaries, but most hens only have the left ovary functioning with the right remaining dormant. If there is an issue with the left ovary (such as a tumour) they will stop laying and then the hormones released from the right ovary are male hormones. These hormones then change the physical appearance of the hen into a rooster. Tumours are relatively common in our crossbred chickens at a young age. They have been bred to lay excessively, so by the time they reach 18 months old their prime laying days are over - this is when health issues can arise. Heritage chickens (purebreds) lay naturally and even stop laying over winter so they can recuperate and be ready for the next laying season. This means they can be laying for over five years! If you notice signs of a hen having a sex change, it is best to get a vet to check them in case they require some form of treatment. animalfarmsunshinecoast.com
