Business T H A I C O M M U N I T Y C E L E B R AT E The Queensland Thai community came together in Eumundi recently to celebrate Thailand’s Songkran – also known as the water festival. Over 600 people enjoyed Thai dancing, the Miss Songkran contest, sand castle making, and the ceremony of pouring water over Buddha. The highlight though was the free banquet of Thai food supplied by Sala Thai and other Thai restaurants on the Coast. Sala Thai restaurant owner and event organiser Jang Etheridge shared, “We made offerings of food to monks by lining up, then in return the monks give blessing to the people offering good health,
wealth and happiness for the coming year.” Counsellor Greg Rogerson attended the festival held at Eumundi’s Amphitheatre. Jang said, “We raised $4400 of donations; $2200 of which will go to help build a Buddhist temple on The Sunshine Coast and $2200 will be donated to Eumundi community service.” Photos thanks to Jesse Chirizzi, Charlie Kulkaew and Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher.

Exciting news for Hinterland Feijoas owners Sally Hookey and Peter Heineger when the State Winners of the Delicious Australia Produce Awards as nominated by the country’s top chefs and restaurateurs, was announced last week. The produce award’s rewarded 120 producers across; Dairy, Paddock, Sea and Earth categories, with Hinterland Feijoas Fresh Organic Feijoas farm in Belli Park taking out the From the Earth category in Qld. Sally shared that the next step is the Nationals in mid-May! “We are super proud and humbled to get this far!” she said.
Eumundi Rotary Club will host their annual Pride of Work awards at a community function on Thursday 10 May, 5.30pm at Joe’s Waterhole. Guest speaker, Director of Rockcote Chris Cameron, will share insight into her business journey from a Sunshine Coast backyard operation into an award winning national company.
Editor-in-chief Kerrie McCallum explained, “Now in their 13th year, the Delicious Produce Awards aim to spotlight new and
native products, and consistently outstanding producers who are often the unsung heroes. The awards are a celebration of Australia’s ethical, sustainable and innovative ingredients, and the passionate, talented people behind them.”

RURAL ENTERPRISE PLAN Country Noosa is delivering a new Rural Enterprise Program with its partners from the University of the Sunshine Coast, and Noosa and District Landcare. The program, funded through the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation, is offering workshops to foster a range of environmentally and economically sustainable farming and other rural enterprise opportunities that will complement a positive Noosa hinterland environment. The project objectives are to address the Hinterland “data gap” by better understanding current land use, capacity, and landholder interests. The program will explore innovative scenarios that enable both environmental protection and economic prosperity, while enabling landowners to develop and

implement effective property and business plans. Significant community engagement throughout the project will encourage a vibrant, empowered agricultural community. There will be a comprehensive survey of the Noosa hinterland area conducted by the University of the Sunshine Coast, along with four workshops to identify opportunities for rural enterprises. The workshops will enable discussion on current and future rural land use as well as new opportunities for diversification. As trustee of the heritage listed School of Arts building, the Eumundi Historical Association (EHA) has undertaken some largescale maintenance projects in the last few years at the hall. Since last December, builders have been making some radical changes to the hall’s toilets and bar. The main toilets have been totally replaced and rebuilt, with some major subfloor work needed at the same time. The disabled toilet was found to not conform to code and has been replaced with a new suite, with walls repainted and a new floor covering. Finally completed in mid-April, members of the EHA held a get together to toast the reopening of the toilets and christen the revamped bar. Thanks was given to the architect and builder for their fine work on these major changes that will last for many years to come. Sgt Brooke Flood, Eumundi Police 5442 8222 My article last month centred on my concern about a spate of opportunistic thefts throughout our community where residents had not secured their property, allowing thieves easy access. I am pleased to report none of these types of offences have been reported since that article was published! We must remain vigilant as a community to ensure appropriate security measures continue to be put in place to protect our valuables. Over the past couple of weeks there has been a number of drivers charged with being under the influence of a dangerous drug. Quite frankly, this not only alarms me but makes me absolutely furious. Operating a vehicle whilst under the influence of a drug affects not only your ability
to concentrate, but also your reaction time; it is no better than driving a vehicle drunk. Drug drivers are putting their own lives at risk and risking the lives of innocent people they are sharing the road with. It’s not acceptable. Be aware that a police officer can conduct a roadside drug test at any time you are operating a vehicle, just like a random breath test. Drug driving attracts a zero tolerance - any trace of a dangerous drug in your systems and you will be penalised. Unfortunately, our office days have changed again. The office is now open from 8am4pm Monday and Wednesday. Outside these hours there are always police available, but for day to day business, this is the best time to attend the station.
MP’S ASK COMMUNITY TO GET ON BOARD Ted O’Brien MP, Federal Member for Fairfax, and Dan Purdie MP, State Member for Ninderry, visited Eumundi Train Station last Friday 20 April as part of the Get On Board rail campaign. Eumundi was one of five train locations across the electorate - including Palmwoods, Woombye, Nambour and Yandina stations - that the MP’s visited to catch commuters on their way to work.
Both State and Federal Member’s along the Coast are calling on the State and Federal Governments to fund rail projects for the Sunshine Coast - duplicating the existing North Coast Line, north of Beerburrum, and introducing fast rail between Brisbane, Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast. Take a step back in time and discover some of the fascinating history about our Sunshine Coast at the Heritage Showcase event at the Eumundi School of Arts on Sunday April 22 from 10am to 3pm. More than 15 local museums and heritage organisations will be putting on a show, with everything from parades showcasing fashion through the eras to demonstrations and workshops in lost arts such as butter making and wood carving, live entertainment and more. There’ll also be a unique opportunity to take a seat in Queensland Air Museum’s jet fighter cockpit pod and imagine what it would be like to be in control of the aircraft, the instrumentation and the ejector seats! You can also take the time to explore the township of Eumundi with a guided walk or find out more about our local artists, authors and architects at the film screenings of ‘From the Mountains to the Sea’. This terrific event is being funded by council’s Cultural Heritage levy which was introduced to ensure our region’s stories, traditions and places continue to be protected and enjoyed by current and future generations. fascinating occasion at the Eumundi Amphitheatre. There was traditional Thai music, food and Buddhist ceremonies as well as traditional dance and fashion shows. It was also a genuine privilege to take part in a traditional water blessing by senior Thai and Australian residents. I’d like to congratulate Jang Etheridge for organising such a fantastic event, which really showcased our local Thai community and was wholeheartedly enjoyed by everyone who attended. Dick Caplick Park Stage 2 Upgrade As most Eumundi Residents would be well aware by now, the all-important Stage 2 upgrade to Dick Caplick Park is now in progress. As well as all the new seating and shelter structures associated with the Electric BBQ’s, the one piece of playground equipment that I’m keen to see on the ground is the wow factor ‘Slippery Slide’. I have specially funded the extra upgrade, as I believe it is especially warranted in this much utilised Park! Calling all artists! You’re invited to enter the Local Content 2018 Art Prize! There’s $13,500 in prizes up for grabs and up to 40 finalists will have their work showcased in an exhibition at the Caloundra Regional Gallery. Community C O O R O Y M E M O R I A L H A L L R E O P E N S W I T H FA N FA I R The community celebrated last Saturday when Mayor Tony Wellington cut a ribbon to officially open the renovated Cooroy Hall. The hall celebrated with dancers, singers, a choir, and a pipe band. Cooroy Memorial Hall Association (CMHA) spokeswoman Amy Dwyer said, “We wanted to celebrate our hall’s new lease of life with the community who have supported us during the restoration works.” “It’s clear the hall is very important to the community and we look forward to hearing the familiar sounds of tap dancing echoing from the hall again very soon,” Ms Dwyer enthused. The CMHA worked tirelesslessly for the past 12 months to manage and pay for the extensive renovations for the hall. CMHA President for the extensive project Paul Kluck said all the hard work had been worth it. “It’s great to see this community icon full of people again.” Paul shared the CMHA members believe the hall is a real asset for Cooroy and the hinterland. “It’s such a beautiful, historical building with a rich history – there’s no way we could let it continue to fall into disrepair,” Paul explained.

Arts CINEMA NIGHTS KEEP DRAWING CROWDS Now in its fifth year, Eumundi World Cinema (EWC) continues to be a popular way to spend a Wednesday night in the village, attracting movie lovers from across the Coast to the School of Arts Hall. The May screening of the Japanese film After the Storm was the 48th for the group, with catering from Terri from the SevGen Café at the Pavillion Markets (off Memorial Dr). Currently the group has 120 active members but over 400 movie goers on mailing list, with most coming from the 4562 region, but also about 20% from Noosa, Peregian and Mooloolaba. Director Arnold Kopff shared EWC’s mission is to take viewers around the world one movie at a time. “Our experience over the last four and a half years is that there are lots of people in our community that think that’s a neat thing.” Regular EWC member Maree Thomson said, ”Its a great way to catch up with friends, make new ones, share a meal and a drink at affordable prices and watch an award-winning world movie.” New to EWC this year, members Jen and Lynne shared they absolutely love Wednesday monthly movie nights. The ladies also often go along alone and have met many new people at screenings. “There’s nothing else like it – it’s wonderful, we’re so lucky to have this in Eumundi,” Lynne shared.
“Television tends to adopt safe and reliable story patterns that entertain but without leaving intellectual comfort zones,” he explained. “On the other hand, filmmakers (outside of Hollywood) don’t feel constrained to adopt easyto-follow straight-line narratives; they don’t necessarily abide by the American convention for happy endings or feel the need to spoon-feed their audiences by showing every small detail,” Arnold said. “For many people, including me, cinema at a film society (like Eumundi World Cinema) introduces films and filmmakers that we would not otherwise be aware of,” Arnold enthused.
Another group of locals shared they always bring along visitors to movie nights, to show off the town and enjoy a wonderful International Arthouse films. In this age of Netflix, where people have hundreds of films at their fingertips, Arnold believes movie screenings still appeal because it’s a shared experience and watching films in a dark auditorium with an audience is a completely different experience to watching television at home.

Music THE FULL MOON DANCER

As you drive around it is hard to miss the signs for The Full Moon Dance which appear in Eumundi, Doonan and around this area several times a year. The dance itself is an old institution which 30 years ago was originally known as The Lamington Show, a humorous name coined by Barry Charles. The current name of Full Moon Dance seems to have just happened, used once and then stuck. The current organiser is Malcolm Prendeville, who came to Australia from New Zealand many years ago doing sound for travelling pop groups, and just never went back. He became involved with the Full Moon Dance around 30 years ago while living in Verrierdale. He was new to town, but the Dance needed a sound person, so he joined up. Malcolm is not a musician as such, but does play the keyboard on occasions. “I did sound at the Dance for some years until I started touring around the country with some leading bands and had to let it go.”
Malcolm shared when choosing the bands and the music he makes sure the sound is primarily for dancing. “That’s what the people are there for - to have a good time and respond to the music,” he explained. He also wants the bands to attract a ‘chilled out’ crowd. Reggae, Funk, Blues and other styles all make the list. Plus the music should appeal to a broad range of people from 18 years old to 80 - there is no
generation gap here. Organising takes some time with schedules generally looking six months or more in advance. The dance is primarily aimed at the local area around Verrierdale, but all are welcome. The hall is one of the few that is not run by the Council, so monies raised by the dance help in maintenance and repairs. Then around 10 years ago, with Malcolm back on the Sunshine Coast, the Dance committee believed there was a need for a new or different sound. Malcolm got the call and thought he would give it a go.

Health L I B E R AT I O N O F H U M A N M O V E M E N T If you’ve seen some energetic people running around highfiving one another it’s just a group of Eumundi locals taking part in a six-week community fitness challenge as part of the ZUU training program. This highintensity low-impact training (HILT) is all about joint mobility, injury prevention and being part of a strong community group with an amazing inclusive culture. The body weight training program increases cardiovascular fitness, strength and power like no other form of training you will have ever done – and it’s all with no equipment and is low risk. Over time, traditional training has made us dysfunctional and has impaired muscle groups
and motor patterns through constant isolation. ZUU training is a body weight program aimed at getting people mobile and functioning in a way that traditional training has robbed us of. The body works as an integrated system, not individual parts thrown together. To strengthen ligaments, tendons and connective tissue you need to be moving through several planes of the body and engaging in full body mobility when you exercise. This is injury prevention and rehabilitation! Being educated on the fundamental movements and the purpose behind why we perform an exercise makes a huge difference to the impact of our training. Many people may

A last taste of Autumn from the South of France before winter weather kicks in here in the hinterland. This dish is light, colourful and very tasty. It’s also delicious eaten cold for lunch the next day. Bon Appetite! Ingredients
Method
For the dough
1. Add wholemeal flour, salt, sugar & chopped, cold butter in a food processor. Process until it’s the consistency of fine breadcrumbs.
250g wholemeal flour 120g unsalted butter 2 pinch salt 1 tsp sugar 6 tbsp cold milk 1 egg For the filling 2 large zucchini 3 tbsp black olive tapenade 1 handful of roquette Half a spanish onion A few pitted kalamata olives Cracked pepper Jalsberg or Gruyere cheese Basil, oregano, thyme Olive oil
2. Add egg, cold milk and process on ‘pulse’ until dough just comes together and doesn’t stick to the side of the bowl. If too dry add a small amount of milk or if too wet, add a small amount of flour. 3. Lightly flour the ball of dough and let it rest in the fridge 30 minutes is enough, but up to three hours is good. 4. Wash zucchini, then slice thinly lengthways with a peeler. 15
5. Carefully blanch zucchini for three minutes in boiling water. Cool it down in cold water. Drain. 6. Preheat the oven at 180°C. 7. To roll out the dough, place it between two sheets of non-stick baking paper. Roll very gently with a rolling pin. Slowly and gently flatten it, rather than stretch it. Rest it again before using. 8. Grease a quiche tin with olive oil and line with the pastry. Prick the pastry with a fork. Lay baking paper on top of pastry base and fill with baking weights or raw rice. Bake for 10 minutes then remove from the oven and take out the weights and paper.

9. Take the tart out, spread the tapenade on the bottom & lay the zucchini across in a couple of layers. Add a few rings of spanish onion, sprinkle the tart with the roughly chopped olives, the grated cheese, fresh herbs and the salt and pepper and a sprinkle of olive oil. 10. Bake it for an extra 20 min or until the pastry is baked through. 11. Serve with roquette with a drizzle of olive oil.

Cows are a great addition to acreage property and are relatively low maintenance once they are weaned. Before venturing into cattle there are some considerations and preparations required to ensure your cattle stay safe and healthy. Fencing – Some cows have the urge to break through fencing and eat greener grass on the other side. Ensuring your fencing is suitable for cattle before they arrive is going to stop any possible escapees. Having rows of electric fencing at the top, middle and bottom also helps to keep them secure. Feed – Cows can survive on most pastures but during dry weather supplementing their diet with bales of hay, barley grass, lucerne, etc will keep their weight steady and keep
Worms/Fly Strike/Ticks – Cattle graze on the ground and consume worm eggs and do require worming at least quarterly. Using a registered wormer and rotating paddocks will help to maintain weight. Some breeds of cows are more prone to fly strike and there are products that can be applied to relieve this painful problem. Cattle ticks are very common on the Sunshine Coast and a pour-on treatment can assist to get rid of these blood sucking creatures. Applying any treatment to a huge animal can be a tricky and dangerous operation and you may require handling yards to manage the animals (e.g. race/crush). Tagging – By law, cattle must abide by the regulations under the NLIS system. This requires all cattle to be tagged with NLIS tags and any travel to be recorded in the national database. BUSH GARDEN OPEN FOR BUSINESS Garden design has been a passionate undertaking for Cathy and David Braddock for over a decade. They’ll be opening their twelve acre bush garden, at 132 Solar Rd, Eumundi, to visitors on 5 & 6 May, 10am – 5pm, to raise funds for White Ribbon Australia. Developed over fourteen years, there are hundreds of different plants, demonstrating adaptation to the diverse vegetation areas in the garden. Cathy shared, “When we purchased the land in 2004 it was bare with few native trees and only two small dams.” Previously, the sub-tropical rainforest covering the area had been cleared for timber, cattle and small crop farming. “We saw the land’s potential as a garden because of its relatively high rainfall, beautiful views and interesting topography,” Cathy explained. Cathy shared that over the years different areas have been landscaped and developed. A jetty and fountain add interest to one of the dams and rain forest plants flourish around the perimeter. On the southern boundary, beside the head waters of Six Mile Creek, a picnic area has been created. “Here the riparian vegetation has been restored and stepping stones added, with a

A bridge over a large pond leads to the front entrance. Native fish and several species of rare frogs live among the water lilies and lotus. There is a small orchard and rose garden. A dense forest of sub-tropical trees has been planted around the smaller dam attracting birds back to the garden. The Richmond Birdwing Butterfly has been seen several times. “On the hilly slopes more than twenty species of Eucalyptus have been planted and this is a home for Pretty Faced Wallabies,” Cathy shared. $8 entry. N atu re N otes M A RY R I V E R T U R T L E DECLARED TOP 100 ENDANGERED Mary River turtle (Elusor macrurus) was recently listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List following precipitous declines since 1970. It is now one of the most endangered species of reptile on the planet. This strangely cute turtle, which appears in waterways and drains throughout the hinterland, is one of several species of cloaca-breathing turtles, which breathe underwater using specialised glands in their reproductive organs. The turtles extract oxygen from water that it draws in through gill-like organs in its cloaca, allowing the species to stay under water for days at a time when the water is flowing and well oxygenated. The Mary River turtle is from the Chelidae family. It’s a large freshwater turtle found in the Mary River in areas of clear, slow moving water. This species likes to bask in sunny locations. It is one of over 160 federally listed threatened species recorded in the hinterland waterways. Remarkably, this turtle was kept as a pet in Australia for more than 20 years before its formal description as a new species. This turtle is highly distinctive – not just because of the moss that can grow on its head and shell. The only species in its genus, the Mary River turtle diverged from all other living species around 40 million years ago. The shell of the adult Mary River turtle is smooth, streamlined, dull and unpatterned with a carapace (upper shell) length reaching 400mm. A pale eye ring, which is a feature of a number of other species of turtles, is absent or vague in adults and the eyelid is slightly translucent. The neck has tubercles (small rounded bumps) in two longitudinal rows. There are usually four chin barbels (slender feelers near the mouth) with one large median pair between two much smaller lateral barbels. The males have long tails - up to 70% of
the length of the carapace in adults. This is unique among freshwater turtles. The Mary River Turtle takes an exceptionally long time to reach sexual maturity, with individuals not breeding before the age of 25. Nesting occurs in late October and again about one month later. Juvenile Mary River turtles were subjected to illegal collection for the pet trade in the 1960s and 70s (sold as penny turtles). As a consequence, an entire generation of turtles were removed from the wild leaving a reduced, aging population.

Today nesting is threatened by egg predation from feral animals and goannas, and nest trampling by cattle. This current threat has the potential to remove another generation from the wild population and place the species at risk of extinction. Water quality in the streams the turtles inhabit has declined in the past 20 years too. Removal of riparian trees prevents recruitment of logs into the instream environment. Emergent logs and log jams may be important elements of the Mary River turtle’s microhabitat. P U N K T U RT L E G O E S V I R A L When wildlife photographer Chris Van Wyk took these amazing photos of the Mary River Turtle with moss growing on its head - snapped just outside of Kenilworth, near Little Yabba Creek - he had no idea they’d go viral across the world. Chris explained, “On 12 April I received a message from a friend in Canada asking me if I knew the images were in the Guardian. After that I kept an eye on it.” “I think it’s started with the Zoological Society of London, then went to the Guardian. After that CNN, BBC, ABC, SBS, Channel Ten’s The Project, Sean Micallef, The New York Times – I think it’s also in India, Israel, Pakistan, China...” Chris said he lost track of how far it’s gone, but he even had a request from Saturday Night Live. Chris shared Saturday Night Live was the only group who have offered so far to pay for use of his images but said money wasn’t the reason he took the photos. “The purpose of the images was to raise awareness of the turtle and its plight, by giving the images away they’ve gained exposure that can’t be bought or paid for,” he explained. Chris said he’s now working with the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee to make T-shirts with $3 from each sale going to help save the turtles. “If the T-shirts go ahead then a small portion of the sales will also go to me as the photographer - so there is a potential I’ll get paid after all,” he said.
