Notes Editor’s note ...

A HINTERLAND MOMENT

Our laundry was built in the 1950’s when a cement floor and louvres were a luxury. It’s down the back, next to the outhouse, within easy proximity to the Hills hoist... and the snakes. Really, it’s part of living in the hinterland. You have to be willing to live harmoniously with the wildlife. Yes, the wallabies on the lawn are lovely. Those rascally fruit bats and possums are a great source of amusement – and annoyance – when they eat through the wiring or poo on the drying sheets. But snakes? They can take some getting used to. When you go to make breakfast, or are about to put the school uniforms in the dryer and find a snake in residence, it can be a tad annoying – and shock the willies out of you!

Looking forward to another year serving its community We will continue our support for projects in PNG, helping with medical treatment and are looking to team with QCWA to produce birthing kits for women in PNG. Rotary will play an active role in both the ANZAC and Remembrance Day ceremonies.

Move to the country they say! I’m pretty sure my wife Rach isn’t cooking for me ever again... Bob Miller, Eumundi. Signage and barrier erected at Steiner in Doonan when a resident snake was found digesting it’s meal across the school path. Photo: Lil Staff.

Photo Babette Urban, Eumundi Country Noosa are currently proposing to reopen the Gray family’s abattoir on Eumundi Noosa Rd and many locals have expressed concern about how that will impact on local homeowners and the town itself. As the meat processing property would be in full view from the busy road that acts as the main thoroughfare in and out of Eumundi, the main cause of worry appears to be the impact seeing a working abattoir will have on locals and visitors. Also smell and noise are a big concern. Sunshine Coast Council confirmed that they were currently discussions with Country Noosa about reopening the abattoir and that the building was previously used as a meatworks for over 20 years, from the early 1980s until 2012. A Development Permit issued in 1982 confirmed that noxious industry (provision of amenities building, cold room and loading facilities at existing abattoir) was approved to further support the use of a meatworks on the site. During the height of the abattoir activities, the facility was processing 100 cattle equivalent per week. Country Noosa Secretary Maureen Piggot said the group aims to support and promote sustainable agricultural and other rural enterprises in the Noosa Hinterland. Many of the livestock farms within the region are looking for a more cost effective, humane alternative for processing and currently have to travel three to four hours – which puts added stress on the animals. Ms Piggot said, “We can address this by having our own local abattoir facility that can not only meet our needs for beef but also handle our other animals. “Our team have visited potential sites, rationalising logistics for a

facility that can cater for single animals.” Ms Piggot stated the plans to reopen the facility are fully supported by the Grey family and have been aided by the federal “Farming Together” program. “It may become a Farmers Cooperative with a very flexible, very animal caring facility for us all to use.” Ms Piggot explained the group’s priority is to seek opportunities that help and support this rural community. “The rural areas of the Hinterlands have for too long now lagged behind Noosa’s progress and economic prosperity, and we might be forgiven in thinking that we can turn this around,” she said. Opening an abattoir within the Noosa region is seen as an exciting prospect for many cattle farmers – especially when the Eumundi site already exists. Country Noosa’s research has found there’s a strong public interest in supporting ‘local food, local beef’ in the hinterland. But some residents don’t like the prospect of having the factory right next to the Eumundi township. Ms Piggot said the group is surprised by all the concern. “This matter is currently being brainstormed, led by our extremely experienced project team leaders who work tirelessly for the community through consultation and being inclusive of our local rural cohort,” she explained. SCC confirmed the building is still equipped to operate as a meatworks, with minimum works required to recommence the use and does not require a new application. However, any future expansion or intensification of site usage may trigger further development applications. 5

FEIJOA BOOM Hinterland Feijoas has been growing in popularity as an organic farm door business on 4.5 hectares in Belli Park over the last few years, but this year Sally Hookey and Peter Heineger are experiencing an incredible boom with fruit selling faster than it can be picked. With the fruit in season, weekends are seeing hundreds of visitors coming to the farm for the artisan store, retro food van, stunning views – and, of course, the wonderful fruit! The dynamic duo also recently announced their next exciting venture - their family house is set to be transformed into a Long Apron style restaurant with Spicers Retreats consultant chef Cameron Matthews in the kitchen. Sally shared, “It’s so exciting at home and we are so busy – but at least Cameron is now cooking for Myrtle!” Cameron is now spending weekends creating delicious food sourced locally and served from Myrtle, the on-site food van. Fare includes feijoa-spiked sausage rolls, man buns with Eumundi beef and tasty specials using

produce grown by Pete in the extensive kitchen garden. The new restaurant will take at least six months to renovate and will be a cosy 35-seater inside the existing farmhouse. It’ll be called Winston & Myrtle – the name Winston coming from the Churchill Fellowship Matthews was awarded in 2016 to travel worldwide and research sustainability. Cameron enthused, “It’s got a really great homegrown vibe and we already have some events planned with some big names.” Sally is also excited at the project of building her dream small house on a nearby hill. The Hinterland Feijoas farm gate will be open every weekend from 9–3pm. hinterlandfeijoas.com.au.

Community EUMUNDI POLICE UPDATE

CR GREG ROGE RSON

Sgt Brooke Flood, Eumundi Police 5442 8222

Division 10

I completely understand the angst which some residents are feeling regarding the potential reopening of the abattoir on the Eumundi Noosa Rd. Grays Slaughterhouse closed in 2012, however the property still retains existing use rights, particularly since all the infrastructure, cold rooms/ holding yards etc are still in place. Since its closure, new State Government legislation has come into effect which they will now need to abide by. The legislation relates to issues such as noise and odour and it will better enable Council to work with both the business operator and nearby residents to work through any issues which arise. If it is re-opened, the abattoir’s current approval is for ‘low level’ operations, meaning strict limits are placed on the numbers of cattle it can process per week. I am very keen to establish a good working relationship with the

new operator of this business to ensure the concerns, rights and aspirations of everyone in Eumundi can be met. Long Lunch for a great cause: For the first time in a very long time, I was unable to attend this year’s Eumundi Rotary Long Lunch due to illness. Mayor Mark Jamieson flew the flag for Council in my absence at this terrific event which raises much needed funds for the Katie Rose Cottage Hospice. Congratulations to everyone involved in this year’s event! Every year council offers a number of traineeship positions for people with limited qualifications and limited work experience to gain knowledge, practical on-thejob work experience and a certificate level qualification. Applications for 2018 traineeships open 26 March To apply, jump on council’s website and put ‘traineeships’ into the search bar.

REMOVE YOUR VALUABLES FROM YOUR VEHICLE AND LOCK IT LOCK YOUR DOORS LOCK YOUR GARAGE I have been particularly concerned over recent weeks of the opportunistic crimes that have occurred in the division. This is where offences have taken place because people have not been security conscious and left vehicles, residences or garages either opened or unlocked. Crime occurs everywhere! It frustrates me when I arrive at a location where someone has stolen items which were left unsecured, and I am told by the victim that they don’t lock up because they live in Eumundi, Doonan, Verridale or where ever they live in the hinterland. Crime happens EVERYWHERE! Long gone are the days where you could leave things unlocked and expect them to be there when you return. Don’t encourage

thieves into our community! Don’t make us an easy target! Make it hard - no, impossible - for thieves to take your hard earned valuables! Recent reported robberies • 6 March - Residence in Venning Rd, Verrierdale was broken into. A motorcycle & tools were stolen • 6 March - Vinyl records were stolen from a garage in Mergard Crt, Eumundi • 6 March - Wallet was stolen from inside a vehicle at William Rd, Eumundi • 4 March – Vinyl records were stolen from a garage at William Rd, Eumundi • 14 March - Tools were stolen from a property at Silvertop Rd, Doonan If you have any information in relation to these crimes, please contact Eumundi Police Station: 8am-4pm Tuesdays & Thursdays on 5442 8222 or contact crime stoppers.

Council has appointed Arete Australia to carry out the $1.63M Noosaville Library renovation. Council’s Libraries and Galleries Manager Kerri Contini said progress was well underway for construction works to commence in April. Ms Contini said Arete Australia, a division of Kane Constructions, had significant experience in similar construction projects featuring high-quality fit-outs, and a strong industry track record. “The new-look library will feature an extra 80m2 of library space, technology maker space,

outdoor Wi-Fi enabled reading courtyard, heritage library room, Radio Frequency ID smart technology and lighting and air-conditioning upgrades,” Ms Contini said. The library expansion is a joint initiative of Noosa Council and the Queensland Govt with Council receiving $805,954 towards the project’s cost under the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program. Library staff are finalising the move and relocation of more than 60,000 books ahead of work starting.

Community AN AFTERNOON TO REMEMBER The Eumundi markets site was the setting for Eumundi Rotary’s annual long lunch in support of Katie Rose Cottage and the community palliative care they offer. A crowd of 300 diners enjoyed a three course meal from The Fig Tree as part of the Eumundi Rotary Cabaret Long Lunch. The Doo Wop Dolls and their singing and dancing troupe entertained revellers, along with auctions and raffles which were an integral fund-raising part of the day.

to Katie Rose Cottage at the hospice at 199 Beddington Rd, Doonan towards the end of the month when financials are sorted. Organiser Joyce Turnbull said, “The fun and spirit of the day was perhaps best summed up by lunch patron Laurel from Brisbane who shared, ‘It is wonderful to see a community come together to put on something as fabulous as this Long Lunch for a most worthy local cause - I want to move here!’”

The colourful event was pulled together by over 100 volunteers, including hospitality students from St Theresa’s and St Andrews schools.

“Eumundi Rotary thanks the community for their support and asks that everyone puts Sunday 31 March 2019 in their diary now for next year’s Long Lunch,” Joyce said.

A donation of the money raised from the event will be presented

Community C WA AT T W I L I G H T F O R B U S Y C H I C K S Janet Millington, Eumundi For some time, the once vibrant Country Women’s Association (CWA) group meetings of proactive rural women have been seen as a pastime for retired ladies. Not so! Women today who are looking for support, mentorship and friendship to face the challenges of their modern lives should consider joining the Eumundi CWA. Many modern women feel basic skills like sewing, knitting and baking, or cleaning and gardening tips have been lost. But CWA is a great way for older generations to share their knowledge with younger ones. These skills will increase their effectiveness in the home and with their families. With the rise in population in this Northern Sunshine Coast region, schools continue to grow and class sizes are on the rise. The Dept of Education recently released a breakdown of class size figures for every Qld school in 2017, and of the Coast’s 52 state schools, 38 had at least one overcrowded classroom. Across the state, 8% of the state’s primary school classrooms and 4% of high school classrooms were overcrowded. Dept of Education targets for maximum student numbers per classroom: • Prep - Year 3: 25 students per teacher • Year 4 - Year 6: 28 students per teacher • Year 7 - Year 10: 28 students per teacher • Year 11 - Year 12: 25 students per teacher What the statistics don’t take into account is why the classes are over the maximum amount of students. The schools with larger class sizes tend to be the popular choice for children to attend. Eumundi State School (ESS) Principal Mick Connors explained his school’s reputation for great teachers and a high level education attracts more familys. This year, ESS has 92 prep students, with 646 pupils across the school – the most Eumundi has ever had. Plus, as the 4562 region continues to grow, so will the school. The catchment includes: Eumundi,

Eerwah Vale, Verrierdale, Doonan and Weyba. Mr Connors explained, “The aim is always to have smaller class sizes, but we saw an increase of 100 children moving into the catchment in recent years – it’s growing all the time – and every child that moves into the 4562 region has the right to enroll at Eumundi.” ESS’s Prep- to year 3 class sizes: 25% were over target, and year 4 to year 6: 33% were over the target size. To alleviate the stress of the oversized classes, Mr Connors said that as of term 2, the Preps would have a new building down in their area. The extra classroom means, “Eumundi has a new teacher and a year 2/3 composite class can now be divided into two classes, which means all classes this year will be within the range of 0-25% for prep to three,” Principal Connors shared. Mr Connors cautioned, however, that even though all classes at ESS will now be under the target size, he can’t control more people moving into the evergrowing catchment. Coolum State High School Principal Troy Ascott confirmed his enrolments are also on the rise - especially with new housing developments of Peregian Springs, Peregian Breeze and Peregian Waters within his patch. The High School can brag a record 1081 students enrolled this year. But Mr Ascott is enthusiastic about his school’s growth. “We’re in great shape and making excellent steps to prepare for

the on-going growth in our catchment with more teachers and a new tech hub – build it and they will come!” he enthused. Noosa District State High School and Sunshine Beach State High School are also experiencing high numbers of enrolments – especially for Grade 7 and are now only taking a small number of students out of their catchment area. Principals at these High Schools are also buoyed by enrolment numbers and positive about the growth. The three High School principals meet regularly as the CNS cluster to discuss major planning and collaborative activities. More students at the State High Schools translates to more funds allocated by the Dept of Education for teachers, resources and infrastructure. Unfortunately, the larger numbers of children at the Coast’s primary schools does not work in the same way and this end of the Coast is starting feel the strain. The Dept of Education confirmed the last public high school built on the Sunshine Coast was Meridan State College in 2006. The most recent secondary school opened north of the Maroochydore River, but still within the Sunshine Coast region, was Sunshine Beach State High School, in 1992. The Dept of Education stated there are no plans for more schools – State or High – in this region of the Coast.

EUMUNDI SWIMMING REPORT

The Noosa Active Teens Program offers low-cost activities for teenagers in the Noosa Shire. For health benefits, young people aged 13 to 17 years should be doing at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity every day. The 2016/2017 AUSPLAY Survey results showed only 48% of teenagers aged 15 to 17 participated in physical activity at least three times per week – lower than the stats for adults of all ages – and only 25% participated seven times per week. Alasdair Scott, Eumundi Last Sunday the Eumundi District Swim Club hosted a development Meet and welcomed 200 swimmers representing 29 clubs from the Wide Bay Region and beyond. It was a huge day and a fantastic community event with Eumundi Rotary club running the barbecue and a number of local businesses supporting the event as sponsors -a big thank you to all. The carnival was the final meet of the season and Eumundi certainly made it a fitting finale. Feedback from all was very positive and I thought I’d share this one from Fairymead Club in Bundaberg who took the time to send this message... “We would like to say a massive thank you to the Eumundi Swim Club – Wow, what an awesome

RUGBY SEASON KICKS OFF Last Saturday 17 March, due to Eumundi’s unplayable wet fields after the recent downpours, the three teams from the Eumundi Dragons Rugby Union Club travelled to Noosa for some exciting games. The U9’s played two mini-games, firstly against University and then against Maroochydore. In the first match the Eumundi boys were a little tentative in defence but all this changed in the second game against Maroochydore with solid defence and excellent support play ensuring the Dragons put on a much better display of their rugby skills, for the enjoyment of their cheering fans. Will Campbell-Jones, Max Johnson-Thompson and Jett Herbert were very effective in attack with Craig Yaxley showng early glimpses of what he is

Doug Toms, Eumundi Dragons Coach

capable of as a powerful forward. Both the U6’s and U7’s continued to display that they will be future champions of the game. Their skill levels have come ahead in leaps and bounds, as is a very evident team spirit in both teams. In the U6’s Tristan Youd made some fantastic runs down the sideline while Isla Youd, Nya Johnson-Thompson, Nixon Griggs, Jack Cooper, Henry Dean and CJ Sands contributed to ensure that their Maroochydore opposition were left in no doubt that the Dragons are a force to be reckoned with! The U7’s also played a Maroochydore team with Brooklyn Griggs, George Hillhouse, Billy Gunton and Zac Eaton showing good combinations in attack and defence. Brody Ruster and Finn Rivers were both tireless 12

players who are really starting to develop as integral members of the team. Special thanks to Jack from the U6’s who helped out to ensure that we had a complete team on the paddock. That’s the Dragons Spirit. The player of the morning for the U7’s was Billy who was presented with the coaches Eveready Award for never seeming to run out of energy.

swim meet. We had an absolute ball singing, dancing - Oh and some swimming! Everyone was so friendly and the meet ran so smoothly. We will be back again!” Events like this take a lot of organisation and a massive team effort to make them successful – so thank you to everyone who volunteered their time, skills and positive attitude to make this such a memorable day for all the children involved. I am proud to say though, that what made our carnival different was the contribution of some of our teenagers – Chenoa Gills, Chenoa Scott and Abbie Brook – who took on the role of announcers and had the Aquatic Centre moving and shaking all day! Go girls and Go Eumundi!

Karate started this year with an important topic for our kohai (students). During our first 10 week course we have looked at bullying. We have shared personal anecdotes of bullying and encouraged students to contribute their own experiences. This open and public forum is a great way to help clear the air and provide some possible solutions to those who might find themselves in a similar situation. Students were given homework to ask parents about any of their own experiences. What is Bullying - An ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour

that causes physical and/or psychological harm. How to respond - Calm communication, walk away, escalation, mediation, and finally appropriate physical personal protection. How to prevent it - Education and communication. Raising awareness about the effects - Physical and psychological conditions and social isolation. bullyingnoway.gov.au

Living S U P E R A N N U AT I O N A N D T H E G I G E C O N O M Y Jenny Brice, Eumundi In the last edition I wrote about the importance of a safety net in the gig economy. I thought it may be useful to consider the following information about superannuation. It is simply information not intended as advice. Many of us in Eumundi are self-employed and have always been exempt from compulsory superannuation. As a consequence, research shows that 75% of the self-employed do not contribute. One key reason is the pressures of weekly expenses. If the predictions that the future of work is going to lurch further towards self-employment, and people continue not to invest, more people may be vulnerable at retirement. The chart below outlines the current average retirement funds. It already highlights the difference between types of employment as well as gender. Currently it is anticipated 25% of self-employed workers are at risk of retiring with no superannuation. This may create real difficulties for people personally and nationally. The good news is: • The market is responding by providing flexible superannuation products. One has a catchy name called Gig Super.

• Many of us in permanent employment assume that superannuation is being paid, however it is important to take personal responsibility to ensure any inadvertent mistakes have not been made. The tax office has already identified that there is a $2.85 billion dollar shortfall in what should be paid to what is being paid. The world of work is changing and more than ever the responsibility will be placed on the individual, not the employer or even perhaps the government to ensure retirement funding. Food for thought ... jennybrice.com.au

Eggcellent eggs! Maximise the nutrition of your home grown eggs There has always been debate over eating eggs and how many is too many. I believe in everything in moderation. Eggs contain excellent protein and vitamins and there are ways to improve egg nutrition. Happy Hens, Healthy Eggs? The less stress hens have, the more likely they are to lay frequently and produce better quality eggs. Providing a diet suited to laying hens will ensure they have the correct nutrition and you can even choose organic layer feed. Ensuring your hens can free range in daylight hours will give them access to extra protein and vitamins/minerals in their diet and increase their happiness. You can include supplements in their diet which can increase egg nutrition such as omega oils, garlic, kelp etc. Fresh Eggs Collect eggs everyday so that they are as fresh as possible.

Do not wash them until you are ready to cook them (use a dry cloth to get rid of any dirt before storage). Using water can destroy the protective film around the egg and this may allow bacteria to form inside the egg. Store the eggs with the pointy side down as this will give them the longest shelf life. Cooking Eggs The way you cook your eggs is important. The white of the egg contains a protein called Avidin and it is destroyed with heat. As this protein isn’t beneficial for us, cooking an egg white is a good idea. However, the beneficial fats and nutrients of an egg yolk are destroyed when cooked. This means that we need to cook the egg white well but limit the cooking of the yolk. Therefore, it is more beneficial to soft boil or poach an egg than it is to have it sunny side up or scrambled. animalfarmsunshinecoast.com.

On average, one hen’s egg contains 75 calories, 7g of highquality protein, 5g of fat, and 1.6g of saturated fat, along with iron, vitamins, minerals, and carotenoids. The egg contains a powerhouse of disease-fighting nutrients like lutein and zeaxanthin.*

Outdoors L O R I K E E T PA R A LY S I S S Y N D R O M E Vicki Toomey, Eumundi At Eumundi Wildlife Centre at the moment we are seeing a high number of lorikeets coming into care. Most are showing no ability to fly without any signs of trauma that would lead to their condition. Wildlife veterinarians have termed this Lorikeet paralysis syndrome (LPS) and their influx into care seems to be seasonal to some degree, but cases are seen throughout the year. However the wet weather of late may have made things worse by washing nectar from flowering trees and shrubs. LPS has been recognized in wild rainbow and scaly-breasted lorikeets in eastern Australia since the 1970’s. In South East Queensland, lorikeets present unable to fly, ataxic (lack of voluntary coordination of muscle movements), with more severe cases showing voice changes and inability to blink and swallow. Birds are often in

good body condition, but some also present emaciated and dehydrated. The cause of the condition is unknown. Numerous theories, including poisoning and deficiencies, and viral infections have been proposed, but none have been proven. Treatment of their condition is with supportive care, since the cause is unknown. A few lorikeets can deteriorate very rapidly in care and require euthanasia, but most of them will recover if given time. Typically this can mean four to ten weeks in care. If you have a concern for any wildlife, please contact the centre on 5442 8057 so appropriate medication and treatment can be given as soon as possible to the patient.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP THE EUMUNDI W I L D L I F E C E N T R E B U T C A N ’ T D E A L W I T H H U RT AND INJURED ANIMALS? You can still help by raising much needed funds volunteering as a car parking attendant at the Eumundi Markets once a month, on a Saturday. Please contact 07 3258 5627.

Thank you so much for helping us spread the word when she was missing.
