777 EUMUNDI - NOOSA ROAD, DOONAN QLD 4562

Notes Editor’s note ... It seems Autumn is the season hinterlanders like to get stuff done. We’ve awoken from the heady, heat haze of summer and jumped into the community with renewed vigour. There’s been amazing displays of community spirit over the last couple of weeks with fundraising events, working bee trainings and networking gatherings attracting a great show. We are a region known for having an incredible community spirit – our local councilors are in awe of it – and it’s definitely been in evidence lately. The Green also has some new volunteer contributors, which keeps the magazine ever evolving and reflecting its community’s interests. Feel free to send through encouraging feedback for them. We’re loving the drop in temperature and getting our uggs on again. But all this rain has eroded our roads, footpaths (beware the sink hole in the Eumundi Conservation Park) and our ability to hang out the washing.

At Eumundi Art Street (part of last year’s Horizon Festival), one of our signature events was “Paint the Street” where we invited several renowned street artists to paint 20 panels to affix to the bins lining Memorial Drive - to create a wonderful street gallery. In addition we had the Caplick Park underpass painted for posterity - turning a dilapidated pedestrian tunnel into a thing of beauty. Inspired by the urban environment, with works that reflect Eumundi’s past, present and future as our historic hinterland village transformed from a traditional rural agricultural and timber town into one of Australia’s artisan hubs. The good news is that very soon we will be unveiling the street art panels mounted on selected bins down Memorial Drive, after carefully having each piece clear coated with anti-graffiti paint thanks to the generous support of Councillor Rogerson. We thought it might be nice to give you a sneak preview of some of the works..

Business ARTISAN SALON OPENS Eumundi Post office has a new neighbour. Mia Ward moved to Eumundi twelve months ago with a dream to open a boutique hairdressers and gallery showing her paintings, so when the lovely shop space in the heritage postal building become available, it felt like the timing was perfect. “We were drawn to Eumundi - the feel of the town and wonderful community – we’ve felt so welcomed and have met amazing people here,” Mia shared. With the support of her partner, family and friends, Mia has transformed the empty shop space into her dream salon. “I’ve had such a welcoming response with people saying they love the feel and energy it has,” Mia enthused.

PECHA KUCHA GOES GREEN

“Sometimes I set up my easel on the front deck to paint too - so I’m always either painting hair or a canvas – my perfect combination. Two years earlier I had a psychic reading which had told me I would be painting! I’d drawn a little when I was younger but never painted … She told me I needed to pay attention to my dreams and then one morning I had an amazing urge to paint the face of an indigenous elder and young boy! The journey of realising my dream has been a long one!”

Mia explained she likes working solo so she can devote herself one-on-one to her clients. She wants them to feel catered for, rather than a number in a salon. “I have my own beautiful, organic range of products which are made locally in Coolum.”

Sunshine Coast Creative Alliance (SCCA) came to Eumundi on Wednesday 28 February for the latest series of Pecha Kucha presentations. Eight creatives were invited to talk on the evening at the Imperial Hotel’s Green room, including Doonan local Meghan Halverson President of the Queensland Koala Crusaders - and The Green’s editor Sacha HamiltonMacLaren. The format for the evenings is a talk accompanied by 20 slides that are shown for 20 seconds each. The evening aims to share stories and information of creatives from across the region and provide a networking platform. Sacha shared an insight into the Green’s production and unique appeal. “Independent magazine publishing is a dying craft,” she said, “Yet people are still drawn to holding a magazine in their hands – but what was once a necessity to gain information, has become a luxury when time is a precious commodity.” “Through the Green - with my small team and army of volunteers - we’re keeping this wonderful craft of community magazine publishing alive for as long as we can,” Sacha enthused.

“My door is always open and I love that people feel they can wander in and browse the gallery - or just chat!” Mia enthused.

Presenter Meghan Halverson gave a heartfelt insight into why she’s passionate about Koalas.

G R E AT S E W I N G TURN OUT

The Eumundi community banded together in the Imperial Hotel’s Outback Bar on Sunday 4 March for an afternoon of country comradery to remember local man Harry and support his brother Sandy. The Scotsmen, who would walk the hinterland roads daily together, were a regular sight to locals. The afternoon raised near $6000 through donations, beer sales from the ‘Karma Keg’, face painting, snags and raffles.

The first Eumundi Boomerang Bags working bee for 2018 had a fantastic turn-out in the CWA Hall of over 20 locals, with many new recruits keen to cut & sew. The group of women of all ages had a lovely sense of comradery and amazing work ethic, pumping out 50 finished bags and another 50 needing finishing. The bags will now go into Eumundi shops to encourage locals to go plastic free. The next working bee is pegged for April (after school holidays).

Seib Rd Bridge - Last month, I invited the Shadow Minister for Transport and Main Roads (TMR), Steve Minnikin, to the Ninderry electorate, and one of the first stops we made was the Seib Rd Bridge. I’ve been fighting for the pedestrian access bridge throughout my campaign, and it remains one of my top priorities, so I was delighted to be able to make the case for the bridge with the Shadow Minister. I’ve also raised the issue again with Cr Greg Rogerson as part of my regular briefings, and I will continue to work with both Council and TMR to ensure this project becomes a reality, sooner rather than later.

Have a coffee - It was great to catch up with local residents when I set up my mobile office at Dick Caplick Park earlier this week. I plan on bringing my mobile office to this part of the electorate on a regular basis, so make sure you follow me on Facebook for the details, and pop down and a have a coffee with me (Maleny Dairies Iced Coffee on the house). Alternatively, give me a call

on 5406 7900, or ninderry@ parliament.qld.gov.au, or drop in to the office at 11 Heathfield Rd, Coolum. Riding For the Disabled - I was also fortunate to be able to spend some time with Carolyn and the wonderful team at Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled in North Arm. They do such a fantastic job in our local community, and I have offered my full support to ensure they can continue to support disadvantaged family’s right across the Coast. Parliament - It was a real honour to put our local area under the spotlight when I delivered my maiden speech in Parliament on 8 March. As well as highlighting some of the significant issues facing our local area, I spoke about why I am so passionate about our community and why I put my hand up to represent you. It’s an honest account of why I am here. You can download a copy at parliament.qld.gov.au/ work-of-assembly/hansard or give me a call and I can send one to you.

so Mr Jones explained that one year ago this road was a quiet gravel road, with local, slow moving traffic. “Why have council built a highway through the quiet rural area?” he asked.

“The depth of the canal has been reduced by 400mm, but it’s still not what was requested by residents,” he said.

The VRG don’t believe there was enough consultation and that residents’ concerns after obtaining two independent engineers reports stating the road was unsafe and substandard are being ignored. “The Mayor wrote that a sharp corner with a history of crashes cannot be made safer with a design recommended by VRG’s engineers as it would cost $150,000 more. What’s one person’s life worth? The safety guidance signage alluded to by Cr Robinson is mandatory because Council are stubbornly implementing their cheaper and unsafe design,” Mr Jones stressed.

This is a local road for locals,

verrierdaleresidents.org

Vice-President of the VRG Mark Jones clarified that the group are not concerned about the lack of safety barriers along the road [The Green Issue 285], but believe far too many have been installed. “VRG are concerned that Council have constructed a massive rock lined canal [10m wide by 2m deep and 550m in length] - which is a danger to road users.” “Locals wanted a shallow grass lined, mowable swale,” Mr Jones explained.

The Verrierdale Residents Group (VRG) who formed in response to the Sunshine Coast Council’s Doonan Bridge Rd changes, have multiple concerns. The lovely locals, who have been engaged for three years, won an all-expenses-paid wedding competition, run by radio station Hot 91.1, in celebration of samesex marriage becoming legal in Australia this year. The women shared that they’ve been waiting for the marriage law to change so they could celebrate their love in front of the couple’s children, close friends and loving family. Arts M A G I C O F C RY S TA L G L A Z I N G Dennis Forshaw has been making quite a name for himself as a formidable master potter. Over the last few months, Dennis has been showered with awards for his wheel thrown vessels featuring his stunning, reduction fired crystal glazes. A Doonan local for the past 14 years, Dennis has been a ceramic artist going on two decades, and was formerly the Head of the Ceramics Department at the Barrier Reef TAFE in Townsville. Dennis explained that his passion for reduction firing was originally inspired by master potter Greg Daley - one of Australia’s best. “I have loved the look of copper red glazes since my college days and more recently my focus has been on reduction crystalline glazes and matt reduction crystalline glazes,” he explained.

The vessel that was awarded First Place 3D Section of the Gold Rush Art Exhibition, Gympie Regional Gallery.

Dennis explained he loves the challenge of these evocative glazes that are so difficult to perfect. “You need passion, dedication and an open mind for experimentation, thousands of hours of testing and reformulating glazes, tri axel blends and line blends.” Dennis’s award winning matt crystalline vessel Mind and Will is currently on display at the Noosa Regional Gallery until 19 March. You can also view Dennis’s work at his Doonan studio by appointment between 9am - 3pm most days. 0400 739 256.

Autumn

IN THE HINTERLAND

I thought I’d share a few of my favourites from the storms and rainbows out at Belli Park over the past two weeks. The billowing clouds that resemble smoke was by far the most awesome clouds I have seen since surviving a tornado in Canada. It always amazes me how we can go from one week, where the grass is fried a golden crispy yellow to a few days later of lush green hills and valleys. We truly live in a land of extreme contrasts and by far my most loved part of the world. Enjoy, Sandie Chandler, Belli Park.

After it rains we always have mushrooms pop up! We were all amazed at the formation and different shapes of these ones. Jeanette Grevett, Eerwah Vale.

Music F R I D AY T W I L I G H T M U S I C The Sunspace Café in Doonan is always a relaxed place to go on a Friday evening if you feel like a pizza and some soft, pleasant music – and this week was no exception. Last Friday the group playing was the Hannah Ryder Trio made up by Hannah herself, playing guitar and violin, and brothers Mark and Rohan Tredinnick playing the cojan drum and bass guitar. All live on the Coast and are members of several bands. Many of the trio’s tunes are written by Hannah, and the

Geoff Merrill, Doonan

combination of violin, drum and bass guitar, plus the inventive compositions, kept the audience enthralled. Hannah shared that she studied classical violin for some time in her youth, then gave it up for about six years, but in her early 20’s could not resist the urge to get back into music experimenting with composition and alternative music. Hannah found enjoyment in jamming with people and learning how to express herself through the violin in a very free way. Her

influences are wide ranging, and she likes all styles, from African to classical. The trio are yet to produce a CD but, as the inspiration and experiences continuing to flow, there could be one on the way in the future. In addition, the evening was opened by musician Sean Cusick who is versatile with both mandolin and guitar. He could be described as playing Americana and gave a good rendition of some Bob Dylan tunes. He then played some jazz with Hannah joining him on the violin.

ROY ORBISON AND ME Cheryl Webb, Eumundi

Now that I live in Eumundi, I think I had better come clean. For the last 16 years I have been having an affair with Roy Orbison. No, not the original Roy. I’m talking about a musical affair with one of Australia’s premiere Roy Orbison tribute artists, internationally acclaimed, Dean Bourne. I’ve been touring with Dean around Australia and New Zealand as one of his backing vocalists - and I’ve loved every minute of it. Cont’d on pg 13

If you’ve seen the documentary film 20 Feet from Stardom then you’ll have an insight into my life as a performer. The film follows the behind-the-scenes of the back-up singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 60’s and 70’s, and, like these girls, I too have stepped out from behind the mask to strut my solo stuff: from National TV appearances to six years with The Seekers - and everything in between. I’ve had a vast range

of experience in the industry and I’ve learnt a lot. I believe that if you want longevity in the music business then you must be versatile. Being a ‘Star’ is like winning the lottery, but being versatile and having many varied styles under your musical belt, will give you a chance at a long-term career. I once attended a Masterclass by Sting’s guitarist Dominic Miller, and this was his philosophy too, so I’m in good company. To my young, idealistic, creative fellow musicians: be a student of music. And by that I mean immerse yourself in all types of genres and styles, then blend them with your own. That way if opportunity knocks, you’ll have the chops to do it, and do it well.

Basically, myself and the other back-up singer try to recreate the vast choirs and string sections that supported Roy Orbison - with just our two voices. I can tell you it’s not easy, especially when I’d never had a Roy Orbison album in my collection. But I’ve grown to appreciate and respect Roy’s incredible vocal ability of over three octaves. What’s more, his falsetto was superb - those Gibb Brothers could take a few pointers from Roy’s clarity and impeccable tuning. This is why Dean’s homage to Roy is so amazing. He’s capable of recreating that remarkable vocal range with ease, and at times, I swear it’s the Big O’ himself.

Health WHOOPING COUGH OUTBREAK

Tania Watson, Eumundi pharmacist

Queensland Health experts are warning residents to stay vigilant and vaccinate against whooping cough, with a higher than usual number of cases reported on the Sunshine Coast. Queensland Public Health Physician Dr Kerryn Coleman said there had been 144 cases of whooping cough on the Sunshine Coast, Noosa and Gympie council areas. This was higher than in the past three years with only 38 cases at this time last year. In the past four weeks, 17 notifications were received. Whooping cough is extremely contagious and is particularly serious in babies under six months of age, who are at risk of severe complications and will usually need to be admitted to hospital. The coughing can occur in long spells, and often ends with a high-pitched “whoop” sound when the child breathes in. Whooping cough is sometimes treated with antibiotics to shorten the risk of spreading it to others. Whooping cough is caused by a bacteria called Bordetella pertussis and is also known as pertussis. Children and adults can also get whooping cough, because it is so contagious, but are unlikely to need hospitalisation. Dr Coleman explained, “Whooping cough could occur in fully vaccinated

children but the disease would usually be mild.” Noosa Council’s Coordinator of Environmental Health Geoff Atherfold reported that the target to prevent outbreaks of vaccine-preventable disease is 95%. “In the Noosa Shire area we are short of the target with 89% of one-year old children vaccinated, so we encourage all parents to ensure their children are vaccinated,” Mr Atherfold said. “This is for both the safety of their children, but also for the safety of other children they come into contact with [as] we all have a responsibility to help prevent an outbreak,” he stressed. Free vaccinations are available for women in their third

trimester of pregnancy and for babies at two, four and six months of age with booster doses for children at 18 months, four years, and during their first year of high school. Adults are advised that they can also obtain boosters to ensure that they are protected and in doing so they are helping to protect others. The vaccine for whooping cough is combined with that for diphtheria and tetanus and is available from all general practitioners and some pharmacies.

breathes in. • Some children cough so much they vomit afterwards. • Children are usually well between coughing spells. • Babies under six months of age may have pauses in breathing (called apnoea) instead of a cough. • In more severe cases, babies and children may have problems catching their breath after a coughing spell.

Signs and symptoms • Cold-like symptoms at the start, such as a runny nose and dry cough, which last for about one week. • After that, a more definite cough develops which may last for 10 weeks or more. The cough comes in long spells and often ends with a high-pitched “whoop” sound when the child

Blueberry cheesecake in a cup

Darcy Robinson & Indigo Whyatt, Grade 6, Eumundi State School Healthy Kids Cookbook is full of nutritious, delicious, yumalicious recipes and delicacies that are fun for all ages to make. There are a variety of recipes from simple salads to extravagant desserts, that are a treat to taste. We thoroughly enjoyed looking through the pages and, after much deliberation, we settled on trying the Blueberry Cheesecake in a cup recipe. This dessert is incredibly easy to create as it only includes six ingredients. The minimal amount of sugar (only two teaspoons!) is included so that it is healthy, but it still has a fantastic taste, due to the sweet berries. We loved cooking this recipe together, but most of all we loved eating it! Indigo and Darcy [aka the BFF Chefs] recommend this book to anyone who is looking for something healthy and scrumptious to whip up in their kitchen. Have fun and get cooking! 20 minutes making time & setting time Ingredients

Outdoors LAKE MANAGEMENT

Adam Woodhams, Lake Weyba

Surrounded by the beauty of our region we sometimes forget how it’s all exposed to the risks and challenges of change. How do we manage our beautiful, and fragile, environments and ecosystems as visitors increase, population grows and the climate changes? In the last month Weyba Downs has had a few reminders of this. Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) have taken a proactive position towards developing strategy for how to manage the foreshore reserves of Lake Weyba. But the area faces the challenge of being within Sunshine Coast Council’s boundaries and in the electorate of Ninderry, when everything about our region relates to Noosa. And the absurdity of the fact that when you stand on the shore of our lake you’re in Sunshine Coast, but if you take a step into the water, you’re in Noosa Council. In the past Lake Weyba has been left pretty much undiscovered. But as tourist numbers increase how do you balance the needs of locals with the demands of visitors? People want to experience horse riding through the bush, along the lake shore that then finishes with the grand finale of a ride through the lake. Yet how do you minimise the damage to trails, the erosion

and resultant runoff, and control the feral weeds that result from the back-end of horses doing what they inevitably do? How does a reserve with no facilities beyond a bench cope with families coming for picnics and swimming? It was interesting to attend the SCCs community meeting to discuss the situation with them, but perhaps more so to hear what other residents thought. There were those talking purely from self-interest – “open up the area along the lake’s edge” from someone who’d benefit from the views – to those who feel that we should virtually pull up the drawbridge because any risk of more environmental damage is too high. Personally I take a pragmatic view - recognise that the people will come, make it easy for them to enjoy and work to prevent further damage such as create boardwalks and add informative

signage. There is a gorgeous, ancient paperbark beside the lake that’s perhaps emblematic of the issues we face. This old tree is probably the single most photographed spot around the lake. But it’s loved to death. Kid’s swing from it into the water and people like to sit around it. This is seriously affecting the tree’s health. I don’t profess to have the answers but at least Council is getting out into the community and asking the questions. We all need to engage with these issues otherwise all that we love
