Notes Editor’s note ... It’s been a frenetic fortnight of organising. Many of our amazing locals have been soldiering on, through the Coast’s worst ever cold and flu season, to pull some wonderful events together for our community to enjoy. The best way for us to thanks them is to turn up to this weekend’s many fun happenings. We have the Eumundi school fair on Friday, Pengari Steiner school fair on Sunday, and the Horizon festival action comes to town all weekend. And we have beer! As of this coming weekend Eumundi will have its name on a beer again! That’s worth celebrating isn’t it?! See you in the beer garden - in between concerts, art shows, eat streets, markets and school fetes!

Business LOCAL DESIGNER WINS S TAT E A WA R D Tanawah house wins award for Residential Alterations/ Additions of Houses at the recent Building Excellence awards in Brisbane. Eumundi based building designer, Brett Grimley of Ecolibrium Designs, recently won a Building Excellence award at the Building Designers Association of Queensland, in the category for Residential Alterations / Additions of Houses ($350,000-$800,000 construction cost).

Brett explained that the original odd-shaped and run-down house was transformed into an elegant and light-filled, spacious home. “A minimalist inspired extension to the house gives balance to the once top-heavy building and a simple black and white colour scheme blends the old with the new timelessly,”

The Council gave approvals for boutique breweries, a chocolatier, and two aquaculture businesses to operate in the industrial estate. The boutique breweries approved include significant beer-brewing areas, which meets the industrial use. The applicants also wanted to add bars and tasting areas to complement their businesses, but these aspects were

not so readily supported by the planning scheme. Planning and Environment manager, Kerri Coyle, said, “We recognise that people today are seeking different consumer experiences with access direct from the manufacturer - buyers want to know the provenance of their purchases. From Council’s point of view, it’s all about being more flexible to meet these changing needs, without diminishing those key attributes that define Noosa”. 5

Community BOOM BOOM BAGS SHAKE THE ROOM Wan’din’in art space behind Discover Eumundi was full to bursting on a Friday night recently with wonderful women and helpful kids at the last Boomerang Bag sewing bee. Another 30 bags were finished, and 50 take home sewing packs made. The group are aiming for 350 bags to be finished before releasing them into the village for our community to use when shopping locally, and return when next in town. Organiser Mel Cole said she was blown away by these wonderful women, willing to contribute to this project. “It’s inspiring to work alongside this group of volunteers who have come together to cut, sew and iron!”

The State Govt is set to introduce both a ban on single-use plastic bags and a container refund scheme in July 2018. Noosa Council has added its support to a community initiative to make Noosa plastic free. The Plastic Free Noosa Alliance’s (PFNA) aim is to reduce the Noosa community’s use of disposable, single use plastics items such as coffee cups and lids, straws, takeaway containers, food ware and plastic water bottles. PFNA aims to encourage the take-up of reusable containers and packaging – especially in the retail and hospitality sector, at markets, festivals and events. Mayor Tony Wellington said, “We know there’s strong support in the community for this sort of initiative. “We all want to reduce the amount of litter and plastic that ends up in our waterways and ultimately in the ocean.”

“There’s such a lovely atmosphere at our working bees – and some great stories

residents and visitors, Noosa can lead by example. The result will not only be a cleaner Noosa but also result in less plastic waste going into our landfill.” Toby Hutcheon of the Boomerang Alliance (and on behalf of the community organisations involved) shared that the Qld coastline has been identified by the CSIRO as a plastic hotspot. “Globally, 95% of all plastic packaging is used once and then thrown away as waste to end up in landfill or in the broader environment,” Toby shared. The Plastic Free Noosa Alliance includes: The Boomerang Alliance, Noosa Community Biosphere Association Inc, Boomerang Bags, Surfrider Sunshine Coast, Sunshine Coast Environment Council, ZEN Waste and Sunshine Coast Environment Educators’ Alliance. Tourism Noosa and Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland Noosa have also indicated their support. plasticfreenoosa.org

Heritage E U M U N D I ’ S O L D E S T C O M M U N I T Y H A L L R E A D Y T O PA R T Y Wendy Birrell, Discover Eumundi manager The Eumundi School of Arts hall will be 105 in November! When it opened in 1912 it was considered one of the finest buildings on the Coast. It was built by the community from timber milled in town and many in our community today won’t be aware that it was, and still is, a community run hall and not owned by council. The Eumundi Historical Association (EHA) was made trustee of the hall in 1989 and is responsible for all its maintenance. Upkeep for this grand building is a never ending issue, with the EHA committed to spending close to $150,000 this year on much needed major works including a complete rebuild of the toilets. Stage lighting is next on the wish list of many of the hall’s users. This year also marks an important time 50 years ago when the hall was still a two storey building and in need of major repair. Before television came to Australia in 1956, the Eumundi School of Arts was

the hub of entertainment for Eumundi and surrounds. The hall committee in the early 1960’s discussed many times how the cost of maintaining a large two storey wooden building was becoming too much for the small community, who had to constantly fundraise to maintain and repair it. Termites continued to be an issue, with the hall being closed at one stage as it was considered unsafe to use. It was decided to lower the hall to one storey and tenders were called in 1967 with the hall lowered in 1968 after funds were found. The hall officially reopened in 1969 to great celebrations. Fundraising still continues and Eumundi Rocks around the Clock will also celebrate the continual use of this iconic Eumundi building and a past tradition of debutante balls, fundraiser dances, school musicals, plays and the many and varied events that have taken place in the hall since 1912.

EHA is holding a wonderful event as part of the Festival of Community Halls, which is celebrating in over 20 owned (and run) halls across the Coast, and to generate much needed funds to keep the hall running. Living I’M A SURVIVOR!

Nat Brewster, Eumundi

On arrival in Samoa, Australian Survivor contestant and Eumundi resident, Tara Pitt, was greeted by a chaperon, then asked to hand over her wallet, phone and passport, which was a challenge in itself... then came the blindfold and the van! After watching the first Australian TV series- and with a few low points in her life (sadly her father, Rod, passed away last year), Tara made the decision to apply and give it a go.

Tara (left) with her Eumundi family.

Tara explained that the online application took around 30 minutes, including a threeminute video. There were over 20,000 applicants to the show and Tara was shortlisted. The process involved Skype interview, medical and physical tests, then Tara she was off to Brisbane for a one-onone with the producer. Being chosen in the final 23 is something that she is rightfully proud of. Tara had never been overseas before, so finding herself in Samoa was a shock. But the biggest challenge was being away from her husband, Michael, and three sons:

AUGUST MOVIE NIGHT A Perfect Day: 2015 Spanish comedydrama film.

Food was a popular conversation while on the island. Contestants would share food stories with each other to get

through the hunger. Tara was glad to see the back of the rice meals! Outside of her family, Tara’s horses are everything to her. Her gelding, Tum Tum, is leading the 3D for National Barrel Horse Association. South East District Competition Barrel Racing is a fast-paced sport and growing in Australia every year. She wore her NBHA t-shirt on the show.

CORAL OR COAL HITS HOME

Duncan Sayers, Eumundi

Jane Welsh, Verrierdale

When I was handed a copy of The Long Goodbye by Anna Krien, I was grinding my teeth in angry anticipation. It’s about coal. But really, it’s an exposè of greed, corporate interference in our political system, dodgy economics, misuse of our taxes, shifty politicians, even shiftier businessmen…oh, and a continuing destruction of the environment that sustains us all. Our Eumundi Green Editor was warned: this edition of The Quarterly Essay was likely to dial my rant level to eleven. Anna Krien is more eloquent. I just need to convince you to read her work.

I’ve always been a nature lover. Nature is where my spirit is at peace. Earlier this year I snorkelled over a reef filled with bleached and dead coral. Since then, the memory of coral dying from heat stress due to global warming has haunted me. One of Qld’s (and the world’s) most stunning natural wonders is in danger of being destroyed. All the talk of huge, new coalmines still going ahead in Qld made me sad and mad. I felt I had to do something. I’m an artist, so I painted. I want my kids to know I did everything I could to protect the natural world for them and their children.

It will make you angry. And we need to be really, really angry. This isn’t at the usual level of political fiddling while the rest of us get on with our lives: like trading on which bit of highway gets funded, or how to shuffle our taxes around the marginal electorates’ most vocal special-interest groups, or which country to bomb next with our American friends. This is existential stuff! If we don’t pay attention and the pipeline of coal mine approvals are realised and the products are all burnt, we can kiss goodbye to any hope of reducing the impacts of climate change. Meanwhile, you might be one on the lunatic-fringe that clings to the belief that anthropogenic climate change is some sort of conspiracy against our nice, flat planet. You still need to read this essay. See, you might find yourself concerned with the risk of these mines draining the groundwater that sustains our agriculture on the driest continent on earth. Adani gets a water licence, that is in practical terms, unlimited. Do you like eating and drinking? Are you a primary producer? If so, read the essay and prepare to be upset.

My first painting about the Adani coalmine was entitled Coral or Coal? It features Indian billionaire Gautam Adani and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, with reef animals floating around them trying to be heard. The proposed Carmichael coalmine by the Adani Group, would be the largest ever in Australia. It would produce 60 million tonnes of coal a year (mostly low quality, high ash) and 2.3 billion tonnes over 60 years. And the Carmichael coalmine is just the first of a number proposed of Adani mines for the Galilee Basin in Central Qld. Potential environmental impacts would be: carbon emissions, groundwater pollution, the

The destruction is only made possible by our government. It is therefore our choice at the ballot box. All the major banks are saying no to funding it – they’re good at sniffing out a bad bet. It is only our taxes, generous loans, concessions and subsidies that make these coal mining projects viable – remarkable in an era of supposedly free-

markets. All this for only a few-thousand jobs that are likely to be replaced by robots in the coming decades anyway. By Adani’s own admission, their Carmichael coal mine will employ around 1500 people. I haven’t done the analysis to put this in perspective, but I reckon if you added up all the stalls in our Eumundi markets you could probably come up with that many direct and indirect jobs – all without risking our food supply, wrecking the planet, and needing billions of dollars in government-subsidised infrastructure. Look, just read the essay. I’ll go out on a limb here, and risk the wrath of my employer (sorry Berkelouw Books) and suggest that if you can’t get it at your local bookshop due to stock levels, get it online. It is so important! Channel your anger into action.

A Community Information Meeting at Eumundi School of Arts Hall, 30 Aug, 6 - 8pm to outline the consequences for the waters of Great Sandy Strait and Fraser Island should the proposed Colton coalmine proceed. deterioration of the Carmichael River and the Great Barrier Reef. Then I heard of a new coalmine even closer to home. A Brisbane Company, New Hope Coal, has State Govt approval to develop the new Colton coalmine near Maryborough, with no environmental impact assessment done. It will discharge 985 million litres of waste water into the Mary River. The Mary River flows out to the Sandy Straits, on to Fraser and down the Coast... to us. The waste water will contain toxic, heavy metals at higher than allowable levels. So my second painting entitled Lost Hope? Arts with creatures of the Sandy Straits. My third painting Cyclone Paladani, features Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk with an imaginary cyclone of the future. I’ve painted this coal trilogy to raise awareness - not for sales - and have been using them as a means to raise awareness about the dangers of new coal mines at a time when we need to be reducing global carbon emissions. I’ve joined a Noosa based group, the Great Sandy Straits Saviours, who are trying to stop the Colton mine and who are hosting the upcoming information evening (see page 12). I usually create art for beauty and upliftment, and have been no stranger to artist block over recent years, but these paintings flew out, with urgency, fuelled by a fire in my belly. It was a delight to paint the fish and other sea creatures, as I have never painted these before and they are so beautiful in their colours and sheen, I hope their voices are heard.

In 2007, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) conducted the second National Survey of Mental Health and Well-being. The survey involved approx 8,800 people aged over 16 years. Almost one in five Australians surveyed had experienced symptoms of a mental disorder during the 12 month period before the survey. Anxiety disorders were most common – 14%, followed by affective disorders - 6% (of which depression is 4%), and substance use disorders – 5% (of which 4% is alcohol related). The percentage of people meeting the criteria for diagnosis of a mental illness was highest in younger people, with the prevalence decreasing with age. 26% of 18-24 year-olds had experienced a mental disorder, while only 6% of people aged 65 years and over had experienced a mental disorder. Among young people with the most severe mental health problems, only 50% receive professional help. Parents reported that help was too expensive or they didn’t know where to get it, and that they thought they could manage on their own.

of 26% for unemployed men and 34% for unemployed women. Those with a mental disorder averaged three days out of role (i.e. unable to undertake normal activity because of health problems) over a four week period. This compared with one day out of role for people with no physical or mental condition. mindframe-media.info

• In each year, approximately one in every five Australians will experience a mental illness. • Mental illnesses are the third leading cause of disability in Australia, accounting for an estimated 27% of the total years lost due to disability. • 4% of people will experience a major depressive episode in a 12-month period, with 5% of women and 3% of men affected.

• 5% of Australians will experience substance abuse disorders in any 12-month period, with men more than twice as likely as women to have substance abuse disorders. • Prevalence of mental illness decreases with age, with prevalence greatest among 18-24 year olds.

• 14% of Australians will be affected by an anxiety disorder in any 12-month period. • 3% of Australians are affected by psychotic illness; such as schizophrenia, where there is a loss of contact with reality during episodes of illness.

People unemployed or not in the paid workforce had the highest rates of mental disorder, a rate

• 2% of Australians will experience some type of eating disorder in their life, with women 9 times more likely than men.

• Women are more likely than men to seek help for anxiety disorders (18% compared with 11%) and mood disorders (7% compared with 5%). • Many violent people have no history of mental disorder and most people with mental illness (90%) have no history of violence.

Brooke Conlan, Personal Trainer, Eumundi According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, currently around 1 in 5 Australians suffer from some form of mental illness. While there are no proven studies that indicate that exercising will cure mental health conditions, there is evidence that indeed shows that exercise can help reduce the symptoms for those suffering from mild to moderate conditions of mental illness. Everyone has days when they feel flat, overwhelmed and unhappy. Exercising allows the brain to release chemicals called endorphin and serotonin. These brain chemicals are our natural analgesic and give us that ‘euphoric feeling’ when we exercise. This can help us have a positive perception and feel less stressed. 30 minutes a day of exercise is ideal. Exercising outdoors, in the fresh air, boosts our happy brain chemicals and helps reduce blood pressure too! Getting the cardiovascular system (heart and lungs) going pumps blood to the

brain and makes us feel energetic and motivated. Some studies have indicated that in many cases exercising has been as effective as taking some anti-depressants. This natural form of mental health management is surely something to consider if you suffer from a form of mental illness. It is low risk and has minimal side effects! Please note that stopping medication for mental health conditions should only ever be done under the advice of your GP.

T ips for getting started • Talk to your GP or Counsellor about your options for exercise. • Talk to an exercise professional if you need help in getting an exercise program started and setting small achievable goals to keep you on track.

• Find what works for you. There is no point forcing yourself into a form of exercise that you hate. Maybe it’s swimming or yoga or even dancing? Whatever it is, the main thing is that you are moving your body and getting those happy brain chemicals going! • Visit the Black Dog Institute for information on depression/ anxiety and the benefits of exercise. • Eat well – this is just as important as the exercise itself in our overall wellbeing. 0408 077 699

Outdoors COMMUNITY GARDEN

Louise Formosa, Eumundi Well Community Garden fans, on Friday 11 August, we dug the rubble drain at the Scout Hut site with the help of James Adams. James did a fantastic job of creating a spoon drain as a water catchment for the garden grounds and all who were there helped to get some recycled rubble into the drain. It looks a bit ordinary now but will be topped up with Mary River rubble and planted out with Irises and native bog plants to make it a feature. Next on our list are new gates and entrance to the grounds. This is a Council requirement (we are getting quotes for this now), which needs to be done before we can start to set out the gardens. Our newest recruit Daniel is going to help us with our planning. So you’re up to date! You’re welcome to come along to the next working bee on Sunday 10 Sept, or to our meetings at the Imperial. Call Anja for more info 0401 641 270.

Community Wild Dog Baiting Program September 2017

Sunshine Coast Council in partnership with Biosecurity Queensland is supporting a community based coordinated Wild Dog Baiting Program. Failure to control wild dogs can result in livestock losses, attacks on domestic pets and the loss of native fauna. Landholders have a legislative responsibility to control declared pests on their land and participation in this program is an effective way to help meet this responsibility.

- Meanings behind common dog behaviours A gentle wag of the tail or a slight tilt of the head is a dog communicating silently. A dog barking, whining or howling are more obvious forms of communication that get our full attention. These are common verbal sounds from a dog but what do they really mean? Recently I completed studies in dog behaviour, so I thought I’d share a few behaviour traits with you so you can better understand your dog. Dogs bark for various reasons, but sometimes it can be excessive. A bark is to get attention and warn of threats, but it can also be due to fear, pain, boredom and loneliness. There are different types of barks and each has a different meaning. Getting to know how each bark sounds can help you to better understand your dog’s behaviour and reduce any problematic barking. Compulsive barking is when your dog barks for long periods of time, on a frequent basis, for no apparent reason. This condition needs professional help to solve and treat the problem.

lifestyle needs to be looked at to see why it is happening. Separation anxiety is a common ailment with dogs nowadays as they can get left at home for many hours while we are work and the kids go to school. When faced with this fear a dog may result to chewing up your valuables and leaving you frustrated. Any other stresses, frustration and boredom can also lead to this behaviour. Whining is a form of dog communication and it may be your dog seeking to get your attention, or they may be excited or anxious. Whining can also be from pain so if you are unsure why your dog whines then it is best to seek professional advice. Howling is a dog trying to get attention and announce to all where they are. If a dog isn’t howling to get attention then it may be a symptom of separation anxiety or from pain. We all cringe when we see another animal eat poo. Even though it seems wrong to us, there is a reason why they do this. Eating the faeces of another animal can provide some nutritional benefits and good, healthy gut bacteria. allanimaltherapy@gmail.com

N atu re N otes Favou rites ECHIDNAS

Kon Hepers, Verrierdale

It is hard to imagine an echidna the size of a sheep and weighing 100 kilos. Named Zaglossus hacketti it was one of several species of Longbeaked Echidna once found in Australia. This species existed between two-and-a half million and twelve thousand years ago and became extinct along with other Australian megafauna. The three extant members of the Long-beaked Echidna group are confined to high altitude forests of New Guinea and all are critically endangered, mainly through hunting. Belonging to the same family, the Tachyglossidae (meaning ‘with a swift tongue’) is our own well known echidna which is found all over Australia and also in parts of New Guinea. But, although closely related, our Australian echidna is a different genus – the Shortbeaked Echidna. Along with the Platypus, echidnas are uniquely egg-laying mammals, the only two known monotremes (having one orifice) in the world. Short-beaked Echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus), commonly called spiny anteaters, as well as (incorrectly) porcupines and hedgehogs, are obviously covered in sharp spines. They also have fur, not very evident in warm areas but in colder climes such as Tasmania the fur grows long and dense, partially covering the spines. Each individual spine is actually a modified hair. Adults grow to about 400mm in total length (they actually have a tail not readily noticed under the spines) and can reach 7 kilos in weight. They have a tubular snout/beak about 75 mm long at the end of which are a tiny mouth and nostrils, also electroreceptors for detecting prey. Diet consists of mainly ants and termites, but includes worms and grubs. In the absence of teeth prey is crushed between horny plates on the tongue and roof of the mouth. Echidnas are good swimmers, are very strong and capable of lifting more than twice their weight. Their strong claws make them very efficient diggers.

Mature echidnas can have a home range of 60 - 70 hectares and ranges of over 100 hectares have been known. They are solitary animals except during breeding season June to September when several males may gather to court a female.

Australia’s largest sustainable farm input company is right here on your doorstep!

Image of adult echidna courtesy John Jeffreys

The female has no pouch as such but has a skin fold on her abdomen which serves the purpose. A single egg is laid into this fold, hatches out after about 10 days and the hatchling is carried in that skin fold for another 50 days or so. It feeds by licking the milk secreted from pores in that fold area. When the baby echidna, known as a “puggle”, is too big to be carried, the female leaves it in a concealed hollow either found or dug for the purpose, where she returns every five to 10 days to feed the puggle with her extremely rich milk. The puggle leaves the burrow about six to eight months later. Echidnas are temperature sensitive and are most active at dawn and dusk. In very cold weather they are known to hibernate. They have a number of defence mechanisms of which we became very aware some years ago. We were called out to rescue an echidna being attacked by dogs. In the car, Maureen had it in a strong cardboard box on top of a towel on her lap. In no time the echidna had burrowed through the box and towel and started shredding Maureen’s legs. The only thing we could do was to transfer it to the car boot. It was too late at night to take the echidna to a vet for a check-up (it appeared unharmed except for foam dripping from the snout, which we now know is normal). In the car boot the echidna had dug through the mat and wedged itself into the spare tyre well. It refused to budge and presented no way for us to remove it without lacerated 17

hands. Heavy gloves were not suitable for accessing it in the tight space.

(Near the Ginger Factory)

Eventually it relaxed enough to allow us to lift it and that’s when the ultimate escape mechanism was deployed. The creature voided its bladder and bowels in a gush of liquid excrement. The stench was overpowering; the boot had to be swamped out and weeks after ongoing treatment with deodorant it was still nauseating. The text books say that the echidna’s defence mechanism is to dig straight down into the soil, which we have observed and were astonished at how quickly the animal disappeared. On very hard surfaces the tactic is to roll up into a ball, presenting only sharp spines to an attacker. The third tactic which we learnt to our disgust is well known to wildlife carers but never mentioned in books. The incident with that echidna showed us another remarkable ability that echidnas have. To keep this rescued one safe for the night we had placed it into a heap of leaf-litter in a good size wire cage but did not padlock the latch at the top. Next morning we sifted the litter but the echidna was gone. Cont’d on pg 18

BOB THE DOG NEEDS A HOME

We love receiving our Eumundi Green in the mail and love all the stories you present. We read with interest your article from Chris Gaughan, Doonan, we too have found pieces of petrified wood on our land at Verrierdale. Regards, Mark Vella.

Bob the Dog needs a home. Bob’s owner Brett recently passed away, so it would be great to find a loving home for him. Age about 10yrs, cattle dog (I think), has lived around Eumundi, Eerwah Vale area, has not been around kids, so that might not work. Be a great mate for someone. His temporary carer says he’s well behaved and calm. Bob is a bit of a legend, survived being shot in his youth. He may try to go home to find

Brett (not sure if he’s clear what happened) so I think a fenced yard would be great. Please share so we can find his new home asap. Message 0402 026 725. Thanks Kait Manchip, Eerwah Vale.

Send your signed letter of no more than 250 words to editor@eumundigreen.com.au or post to PO Box 482, Eumundi 4562, along with your address and we may print it in the Green ... Partial name and address will be withheld upon request.

We could not believe it had climbed up and out and we accused one another of letting it go. Since then we have learnt that they can easily climb up inside a wheely-bin and escape unless the lid is weighted down. They can very easily climb chain-wire fences. In New Guinea, Tim Flannery was amazed to see that a Long-beaked Echidna he had put in a corral surrounded by a 2 metre high paling fence climbed up and walked along the top. He also noted that this animal was extremely smart. Echidnas also harbour the world’s largest fleas (4 mm). A few years ago we drove daily along the Eumundi – Noosa Road. Every week we would see two or three echidna road-kills. More recently we have not seen any, neither dead on the road nor alive on our property. So it was encouraging to see that John and Rosemary Jeffreys found one on their property along that road after 4 years of no sightings. Also, an echidna has been observed by Fay Wiggins on both sides of the

road outside the Verrierdale Hall. We hope it survives: they are not really road-smart. This brings us to the main point. Although echidnas are not classed as endangered and are found in all areas of our continent, they are thin on the ground and becoming less in numbers due to habitat destruction and in no small measure to being killed on roads. The quandary is: if we see an echidna on or beside the road our first thought is to remove it to safety. Which side of the road looks safer? The road is part of that echidna’s range and it may well have a puggle in a burrow nearby reliant on its mother to come and feed it. If we have removed her to “safety” on the wrong side from her puggle she will return there anyway and hopefully cross the road unscathed. If she doesn’t, the puggle dies. Echidnas do not suddenly jump out in front of cars from the roadside so caution when driving, especially where road-signs advise of wildlife in the area, will help in some part to avoid the iconic echidna following its giant relative into extinction.
