Notes Editor’s note ... The community magazine is a very rare breed now-days. Instead of reading about celebrity scandals or Trump – or have every article sell you something - the Green’s content is written about the community by the community. We’d never have the resources to compete with upto-the-minute news – which other papers ravenously pulp through before moving onto the next sensational tragedy. So we focus on locals - you get to learn that your neighbour is a geologist or a painter, or stop someone at the servo or school and tell them you liked their article or photo. It’s no wonder then that the demand for more printed Greens is constant, especially in Yandina and Cooroy. People love it. So we’ve increased our publication to 4500. We could easily do more but print is costly – even with all the volunteers contributing – which is why so many grass roots publications are falling by the wayside. Where other community mags have folded the Green continues to grow, share stories and celebrate our beautiful region.

Sunshine Coast Council has completed an investigation into the recent clearing of vegetation on the property boundary between privatelyowned land at 82 Venning Rd, Verrierdale and the Eumundi Conservation Park which is owned by the State Dept of National Parks, Sports & Racing. The investigation revealed the clearing was undertaken for the purpose of constructing a new boundary fence after recent surveying had revealed the existing boundary alignment was in the incorrect position. The scale of the clearing within the privately owned property has exceeded the exempt clearing provisions under council’s Planning Scheme and therefore officers will be seeking appropriate rehabilitation and revegetation within the property. Council officers have been advised that permission was obtained from the State Department of National Parks, Sports & Racing for clearing within the Eumundi Conservation Park. Council is

currently awaiting feedback from the State Govt to discuss the extent of their approval for the clearing. The countdown is on to Council’s Horizon Festival! The first festival was an outstanding success with 35,000 people participating, and more than 200 events are on the program this year. There’s plenty happening in and around Eumundi, including Eumundi Art St, the Wearable Art competition (25 August), a Busk-Off in Dick Caplick Park and the Eumundi School of Rock (both 26 August) and the Tastes of Eumundi that will showcase some of our region’s best chefs. Check the full program of events and to book your tickets! horizonfestival.com.au Save the date – Sunday 20 August for the annual Yandina Street Fair! This is the event’s 40th year and will include live bands, art exhibitions, laser light shows and so much more! I’ll catch you there! yandinastreetfair.org.au

Arts T R E E P L A C E N AT U R A L D Y E I N G W O R K S H O P Anne Harris, Eumundi Tree Place began two years ago when an ancient tree fell in Doonan and I saved it from the Eumundi Noosa Rd tip where it was destined for wood chipping. This 250+ year-old tree is the foundation and inspiration for a series of workshops and exhibitions that use creativity and art to grow a community. The tree provided insight for me into stories of connection, and it celebrates the resilience of nature - and people. This project also explores our relationship with trees that we live amongst as hinterlanders. For the Horizon Festival this year, I am collaborating with natural dyer Jenai Hooke (founder of the Sunshine Coast Natural Dyeing Interest Group - SCNDIG) to create an art installation of over 600 naturally dyed squares. This work-in-progress entitled ‘Standing Here’ is a collaboration of natural dyers – both experienced and novice - from around the world. The aim is to share our passion for

sustainability and environment by bringing people together to create an evocative artwork which will be installed at the University of the Sunshine Coast. It also shows that each person doing their small part - can add up and make a difference when connected together. We’re running a workshop on Sunday 27 August in Dick Caplick Park, Memorial Dr Eumundi that teaches how to make dyes from plants and kitchen scraps. You will also learn the ancient Japanese technique Shibori to make beautiful designs on fabric squares.

N AT U R A L D Y E ART COMP The naturally dyed category of the wearable art competition will showcase creations at Eumundi Square on Friday 25 August, 10-12pm. There will also be a collection of naturally dyed clothing on the catwalk. Entries close 18 August for the wearable Art Prize. Free entry. horizonfestival.com.au/event/ wearable-art-competition. Also, work by SCNDIG will be showcased at the SEVGEN cultural market at the Pavilion Market space, Memorial Dr, Eumundi on Friday 25, 1-5pm. It’s a great way to see what is possible with natural dyes.

Eumundi cricket team Ya Mum’s Undies (YMU) celebrated their 100th match recently with a win over an undermanned yet combative Budggie Smugglers line-up, making it two wins from two matches for the season.

E S S K I N G O F T H E M O U N TA I N Eumundi fielded five teams three boys and two girls - in this year’s King of the Mountain Primary School Relays. The girls finished 10th (Lexi Sheavils, Rosie Robertson, Jessica Vaughn, and Harmony Fonte) and 14th (Brooke Jeffery, Indigo Whyatt, Kirra Boyd and Maggie Robertson) out of 34 teams. The boys finished 3rd (Sebastian Hayes, Lui Biggs, Rhys Pepper and Liam Laverty), 15th (Zion Kendall, Hamish Giles, Ryan Fox and Lachlan Britten) and 21st (Royce Robertson, Kipp Byrne, Ty Brennan and Nathan Howarth). same experience. While it is wonderful to get a podium finish, it is great to be part of a team representing your school in such a big event. And this is reflected in the pride and effort shown by all Eumundi runners. As chief marshall, Dave Chapman, says every year, it is the biggest relay of its kind in Australia. And we won’t argue with him. This year I was especially impressed with our 3rd

boys team which consisted of year 4 boys, all of whom were keen and enthusiastic members of our Running Club.

The boys fantastic 3rd placing (behind St Thomas More and Sunshine Beach State School) was the 7th podium placing. Every year there are “if only” and “could have beens” as top runners have to pull out due to illness or unforeseen family and sporting commitments. For many years, our teams competed without year 7’s as they had a long term commitment to a Snowy Mountains School Camp. I expect other schools have the

John said it was a fantastic event this year with the kids thoroughly enjoying the race and experience. “North Arm State School will definitely be back to compete in the Schools Relay Race in 2018,” he enthused. Team Captain Harriet McGrath shared that when the young athletes walked the course around the streets of Pomona before the race it looked easy, but when racing it was a challenging course. “It was a fun morning [and] interesting to see all of the other school’s abilities,” she said.

Patrick Mannion, Eumundi

Eumundi State School Grade 5 student Damian Mannion was recently selected to compete for the Queensland team at the 2017 Australian Karate Federation National Championships tournament in Sydney this month in kumite (sparring) and kata (detailed patterns of techniques). Damian qualified because of his success at the 2017 QKA State Tournament, and his selection is testimony to his diligent training three hours a day, four days a week with his instructors, Bryan Dukas and Rick Hislop at the

Sunshine Coast Martial Arts: Karate Budokan International in Noosaville. Most Saturdays for the past few months, Damian has trained together with the Qld state team in Brisbane under the guidance of Qld’s top state competition coaches. Extra classes for competitors in kumite and kata have also been run at his dojo (karate school) over the last few months. When asked what he enjoys about Karate, Damien enthused, “I like the execution of power that is shown in kata.”

R O TA RY S U P P O R T S E S S N E T B A L L Netball mum and Eumundi Rotary member Tania Broadbent (right) presented a cheque for $240 to Eumundi State School coach, teacher and mum, Fiona Bastow (left) and netball mum and coach Debbie Murphy. The donation from Rotary will enable all the netball teams to buy equipment for weekly practice sessions and to take to the games.

Sport C O M E - N - T RY A NEW SPORT Noosa Council is hosting another of its popular free Come-n-Try Sports Afternoons for primaryaged kids to try out some summer sports to see what they enjoy. Local sporting groups will be providing free activities: cricket, baseball, softball, Little Athletics, and orienteering on Wednesday 16 August, 3.30-5.30pm at the softball fields, Noosa District Sports Complex, Butler St, Tewantin. Community Development Manager Alison Hamblin said it’s a great opportunity to experiment with different sports in a fun and noncompetitive environment. The kids have a little healthy snack before they start, and then play for about two hours. “It’s always fun, and it’s really helpful for the local groups that get a few extra signups for the summer season,” she shared. To register your child/ren, email their name/s, age/s and school to commdev@noosa. qld.gov.au or 5329 6451.

CHAMPION EUROPE BOUND Good Shepherd Lutheran College (GSLC) student Nick Newton has been awarded the prestigious Olympic Committee Pierre De Coubertin Award at a recent awards ceremony in Brisbane, and will now travel to Estonia later this year to represent Australia at the 11th International Youth Forum. Nick was just one of eight students chosen from across Australia to represent the nation. The Award recognises secondary school students who demonstrate values consistent with the Olympic Movement through participation in sporting activities. Nick was nominated by his school because of his considerable water polo talent and his strengths in a range of sports, including national represenation in swimming and hockey, plus regional representation in AFL and cricket.

Fig and blue cheese pizza Yuta Futamura, Doonan

The Fig and Blue Cheese pizza is my favourite pizza to make at Sunspace. The combination of dried figs, organic blue cheese, caramelised onions, and toasted walnuts creates a delicious sweet and savoury balance. After experimenting with a mixer, I found that hand kneading the dough, made of organic spelt flour, produces the best results. Another option for this pizza is to add a drizzle of raw honey. This is a wonderful winter pizza and a favourite at Sunspace. Serve with organic, mulled wine.

Outdoors COMMUNITY GARDEN Anya Morgan, Eumundi A very productive day was had on Sunday 30 July at our community garden working bee - which we are having now every second Sunday of the month. We built our first compost bay, cleared out all of the vines, and cleaned the drain area that was overgrown and blocked. We’re finally gathering a bit of momentum now to move forward on the Community Gardens! But there are still a few Council requirements to be put in place, such as a new entrance area and car parking bays. We will start the digging of a rubble drain on Friday 11 August, so feel free to come along to share in the first dig into our garden ground. We have been busy in other areas while Council formalities are being sorted, with a sausage sizzle on 8 July where we raised over $1000.

Meeting fortnightly on Friday nights has helped us to start planning the garden spaces. We hope to see more volunteers coming along to join us on our Sunday working bees and we would love to include a more diverse group of people. We are still looking for timber pavers and all sorts of bits to help with the garden infrastructure, so if you have anything that might be of use please give me a call on 0401 641 270.
