Eumundi & North Arm real estate market prospering Sellers Priya and Geoff Fletcher are delighted to stand smiling next to their sold sign at 129 Memorial Drive, Eumundi, but there is also no doubt they will miss terribly the place they have called home for the past 17 years when they move further South to the picturesque NSW town of Murwillumbah. Priya and Geoff’s home began its life back in 1896 up on Crescent Road as the former Catholic Church where a young Kevin Rudd once studied at Sunday school. In 1934 it came to its current location and has since been converted into a beautiful home located on a glorious 3154m2 block just a short stroll to Eumundi’s shops and cafes. Pathways through the garden lead to unexpected botanical treasures all hidden behind the tall yellow picket fences. It was no wonder the moment this historic, picturesque, and much loved property hit the market the phone started ringing. Within a week there were multiple offers on the table and when asked what the Sellers thought of their final sale price, their response was “surprised and delighted.”

North Arm Sellers can rejoice as well!

It was only a matter of hours after 498 Bunya Road went on the market before the astute young family and their parents snapped up this little treasure. Perfect for their needs, this property offers 11.61 acres of private, sunny land with two character dwellings, an orchard, multiple dams and a seasonal creek. The phone hasn’t stopped ringing since 498 Bunya road was listed showing the number of buyers keen to buy this type of property in this area and around this price point. Multiple offers were the order of the day for 311 Bunya Road, a 2.5 acre property also offering dual accommodation via a one bedroom self-contained granny flat. Stunning vista enjoyed from the living areas and deck off both the flat and the main residence. Centre stage is a huge seasonal dam and a rustic bridge the leads the viewer’s eye to an ‘island’ of land where, one can imagine, a studio or Balinese-style pavilion would make the perfect place to watch the sun go down. What do these properties have in common? They are all highly sought-after small acreage properties located in Eumundi & North Arm; all went under contract within a week of listing; all have extremely happy Sellers, and they all share the same Agent.

Just Love Eumundi! Friday 25th through Sunday 27th August, Eumundi comes alive to the most incredible arts and culture festival. Experience Eumundi is curating a fabulous array of happenings for the 2017 Horizon Festival that will thrill and delight. www.horizonfestival.com.au

Let’s “paint the street” along Memorial Drive ! trash art PAINT THE STREET 26 and 27 August Memorial Drive

A legacy arts event that will take pride of place for the Eumundi Art St animations at the upcoming Horizon Festival of Culture and Arts is our very exciting “Trash Art” program sponsored by EDCA. It is important that we include in Art St projects that enhance the Eumundi township, as our current main streetscape is in a state of some disrepair and substantial upgrades which include beautification elements are on the cards. Consequently, Art St will focus on two public art projects that will transform some of our key infrastructure into ‘Works of Art’ that the community and tourists will be able to enjoy well into the future. 20 Council rubbish bins and a dilapidated pedestrian underpass will be turned into things of beauty - transforming Eumundi into one big outdoor gallery. Our proposed artistic theme for this project is sustainability, nature and peace...

EUMUNDI BEEF AT SLOW FOOD USA Susan Rodger from Eumundi Beef will be taking the Eumundi name to Colorado this July as the sponsored representative of Slow Food Noosa at Slow Food Nations USA: three days of tastings, tours, talks and workshops. Susan shared, “Attending is a great opportunity to network with likeminded farmers in the alternative food supply system of community focused local farms, low food miles, and an awareness of where your food is coming from and how it is produced.” “I hope some of the ideas are relevant in our local communities and can be shared on my return.” Eumundi Beef raises 100% grass-fed Angus and Murray Grey cattle on 265 acres in Belli

Park using biodynamic and biological methodologies to provide nutrient-dense quality food for local families. Their animals enjoy a stress free life and are treated with respect. Susan is passionate about exploring nutritional health and cooking styles suited to every portion of beef available. They sell their beef and eggs direct to the public from the farm gate on Friday 3 – 6pm. eumundibeef.com.au or 0412 364 156.

Yvette Muir has been selling her handmade jewellery since she was 11 years old. She started making brooches featuring pop-culture items handcrafted from Fimo and sold them at a local gift shop… Now she’s at Eumundi Square!

Her family migrated to Perth, WA where she completed school, and designed a more glamorous version of her clay jewellery. In 2000, her father (feeling reckless) mortgaged his home in order to help Yvette accomplish her dream of having her own business in trendy inner-city Perth. This provided the platform for further creative endeavours, and so the ‘Dolly did it’ brand was born… In 2008 Yvette took a huge risk- selling her business and she moved to Noosa to pursue a more creative lifestyle. An Art-Teacher had gifted her a button bracelet, and she loved the concept, so she decided to expand on that and made a range of button necklaces, the rest is herstory!

Focus on property with Penny Neep Did you know about the new tax rules for properties $750,000 and above? From the 1st of July 2017, anyone selling a property $750,000 or above, is required to obtain a clearance certificate from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Although aimed at foreign residents, all property sellers must obtain this. It is valid for 12 months and can be used for multiple transactions. If this certificate is not provided at settlement the buyer has a statutory obligation to withhold 12.5% of the sale price and forward this to the ATO (the Solicitor will do this at settlement). However, If a Seller provides this clearance certificate to the Buyer prior to settlement, there is no entitlement to withhold the 12.5% and the full sale proceeds will be released to the Seller. This rule applies to houses, units and land. For the full fact sheet, please email me.

I hope to provide you with some clarity and balance regarding the campground at Kenilworth that is operating without approval. Over the last 12 months, Council planning officers have tried to help this particular farmer lodge a Development Application for his property at 18 Paulger Rd to enable him to legally operate a campground business. Because the farmer had always claimed that camping on his property was a means to supplement his farming operation, the application suggested to him previously was one of a low key ‘Nature based Camping’ where sites of up to 100 could be assessed easily with low charges and infrastructure. In addition, I and my fellow Councillors have sought Council’s planning staff to investigate the endorsement by Council for uses up to 10 or so, with a major incentivised reduction in infrastructure charges. However, information and evidence has since come to light that this farmer is in fact operating a high scale operation. He has flatly refused to lodge a Development Application or genuinely engage with Council. Council

has now requested he either lodges an application or ceases his camping operation. These actions and regulations may seem cumbersome if you’re not fully aware of circumstances, but they are necessary by law to protect Council and the community we represent. They also protect the farmer himself, who without any Development Approval, could be argued, would be in serious legal jeopardy for personal liability if a claim were to arise in the event of an accident. Again I ask, what is so unreasonable about Council actions in the regard? Also, how would it be fair to all those other campground businesses on the Coast and in Qld, who’ve obtained the required development approvals and paid subsequent infrastructure charges in order to operate legally? If you’d like to know more, jump on Council’s (or my) Facebook page. You’ll find a detailed statement from Mayor Mark Jamieson. I trust this gives everyone a better understanding.

Community EUMUNDI POLICE UPDATE Sgt Brooke Flood, Eumundi Police 5442 8222 Firstly, I would like to pass on my thanks to some truly amazing gestures shown to myself, my staff and the Qld Police over the previous weeks. As I am sure you are aware, the Qld Police Service lost one of our Brothers on 29 May, Senior Constable Brett Forte, when he was murdered whilst performing duty in the Lockyer Valley. The support that has been shown from members of the Eumundi community and surrounding areas has been nothing short of overwhelming. The people who brought flowers to the Station, made cakes, the children who made us beautiful cards and the people who said thank you for the job we do or passed on their condolences, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks. You have reminded us of the reason we continue to turn up each day to do our job, despite the risks that we were so harshly reminded of. On Sunday 18 June, a lovely family lost their Browns Creek Rd home to a fire. I attended

this job and was absolutely devastated for the family who moved to the area 12 months ago with their two lovely, young children. You would think this tragedy would have been plenty for the family to deal with, but yesterday they reported that since the fire a thief has broken into a shed at the property and stolen a chainsaw, air compressor, Omni Scan machine and assorted hand tools. I would encourage anyone with information in relation to this thoughtless act to please come forward. Also during the month of June, a silver standard camper box trailer with QLD registration CT7572 was stolen from an address on Sunrise Rd, Eumundi. The trailer has a brown cover over it with “Oz Trail” written on the cover. If you have any information in relation to either of these matters, contact Eumundi Police or Crimestoppers immediately. Any information can be taken anonymously.

SCOUT HUT MAKEOVER The old Scout Hut on Memorial Dr (adjacent to the Eumundi Aquatic Centre), which had remained idle for over a decade, has now had an amazing makeover thanks to volunteers Adrian and Lainie Adams, James Adams and Jeni Formosa. The Hall is in the care of Eumundi & District Community Association (EDCA) who will now use the space for their monthly meetings. The Eumundi Community Garden group will also base themselves there. Currently Eumundi Aquatic & Fitness hold classes in the hut, as does Goju Ryu Kakurin Kan Karate Do Qld. Lainie shared that EDCA has spent $14,660 on the renovation which included: plastering, floor sanding and sealing, architraves, kitchen, pump fix, inspection hatch and painting. The Federal Govt also paid for two reverse cycle air conditioner units. Lainie said she hopes more local groups will utilise the space at $12.50 per hour. Anyone interested in hall hire can contact Lainie adelain1@ bigpond.com.

Community COMMUNITY SEWING BEE Last Friday, a group of around 15 local women (and a ragtag crew of kids enjoying the last days of their school holidays) spent the day cutting, sewing and silk screening at Eumundi’s CWA Hall at the first Eumundi Boomerang Bag sewing bee. Mel Cole, one of the women behind the endeavour, said people had been very generous with their donations of fabric

and old ties and that locals had really been getting behind the project. Organiser Hayley Holloway agreed and enthused, “Our first working bee was a fabulous success – we had 125 bags completed on the day.” “We’re now really looking forward to seeing them used in the community,” Hayley enthused. Another working bee is planned for the coming month with take home sewing packs available in the interim for people to collect. Head to the groups’ Facebook page ‘Eumundi Boomerang Bags’ for pickup locations and group updates.

I saw a cracker of a sunrise in Eerwah Vale early one Saturday morning. The sky changed from bright pink to blazing orange to cloudy greyblue in a matter of minutes! I am absolutely loving these crisp mornings. I thought I’d share a couple of images I shot this week whilst on my fresh morning walk on our property. I was soaked with dew by the time I reached the river but it was well worth it. I know I have said it before, but I will never take for granted the blessing it is to live in this amazingly beautiful part of the world. Sandie Chandler, Belli Park.

I spend a lot of time at the beach, but can find inspiration basically anywhere. What is it about natural materials that you’re so passionate about? I love the sensory qualities and imperfection in natural materials and found objects – delicate, fragile paper like shed snake skin, the smooth surface of a bone, the different textures of disintegrating plant materials,

the smell of burnt timber and melted bees wax, the feel of rusty metal pieces or my own hair. It’s also the element of impermanence and unpredictability of the findings. What interests and inspires me most is what I don’t see, the mysterious stories that marks and scars can tell.

It was nature’s way; to survive, we must fight, we must compete. I was an extremely competitive child. I don’t think it was taught either, it was how I was. But even back then in the bosom of my family, being a middle child, something didn’t sit right with me. Competition can compel us to strive to be better and what’s wrong with that? We should all strive to be better shouldn’t we? But should we be striving to be better than each other or should we be striving to be better than ourselves? Can’t competition in fact, isolate and smother, make someone stop trying altogether because they’re not the best and they don’t want to fail? Why is it that it is perceived to be more

important to win than to be inclusive? So whether the competition lies in sport, art, business, or friendship, maybe we should be learning to cooperate better in this game of life. We are told over and over again that this world is about survival of the fittest, but what if the fittest decide, instead of only thinking of themselves and of winning, to think of the whole group. They teach, they help others to grow, they encourage others to be the best they can be, and through this encouragement and inclusion we create growth. A beautiful example of this was when a runner fell during the Rio Olympics and others stopped to help her finish the race. We all swelled with pride and remember that moment – not who won the race. Team sports encourage children (and adults) to cooperate and work as a group for a common goal, but failing as

a team is just as an important lesson. In nature when you have a dominant plant competing in an area, it can smother and take over all other species so that an area loses its biodiversity. Its uniqueness. We all have a uniqueness and different levels of abilities for different things. In the workplace people work harder as a team when encouraged and praised instead of threatened and punished as individuals. This can only occur when we throw off our battle armour and help each other to grow, to be better, through cooperation not competition.

Sport TA L E N T E D TAY L A T O P L AY F O R Q L D Following the recent sporting highlight that saw the Sunshine Coast Lightning take out top honours in the major national netball competition, local netballer Tayla Jeffery has a momentous sporting moment of her own. Talented Tayla recently earnt herself a place in the Under 12 Queensland Netball team, off to play at nationals in December. Being selected for this team is no easy feat given the very high level

of participation in netball, but Tayla’s selection is a “no-brainer” for those who have watched her in action on court. Tayla has natural ability and a game sense that is beyond her years. Ex-Eumundi school student, Tayla played as part of Eumundi’s Lightning team in the Noosa competition, helping to boost the team to top place in their division last year. Tayla was picked for the school district netball team when she first

EUMUNDI BUSHCARE GROUP Amber Grimley, Eumundi

Andrew Bell, Doonan

TREE HUGGER COMPETITION

Hundreds of wildfires start across this Great Southern Land every year! Some fires naturally occur ... others are caused by more nefarious means. Countrywide fire crews will be called in to protect their area of operation, and, if things get really serious, personnel will be deployed interstate too. So, what’s it like to fight a fire, to head to the flames, heat and smoke – especially as a volunteer? The appliances are always loaded and ready to turn out, so once we get the call, don the yellow suits and established a crew, it’s off to the location given. As a volunteer organisation you never know who will turn up - or if you’ll have a full team available. This is why it is so important to have many fully trained volunteers and get to know the strengths of your colleagues. Approaching a big fire is quite surreal, as the light filters through the smoke - more so at night - feeling like you’re in a different dimension. With big bush fires the flames can ignite the canopy and move extremely quickly when fanned by the wind. The rush of the fire can sound like a jet flying overhead. The heat is tremendous, more so at the height of summer, and can hit you like a punch in the face. Hollow logs or bamboo

can suddenly pop and bang, sounding like a fireworks display. Flying embers can fall on the surrounds, starting spot fires. Like any other outdoor situation, you find yourself at the mercy of the weather. Large bushfires often create their own weather, so you have to pay attention to the shifting patterns and be constantly aware of your situation. Everyone has to be responsible for everyone else. You have to constantly ask yourself, “Am I/are we in a good spot?” and “Can I/ we get out of here?” The science of fighting fires has changed over the years. There have been advances to equipment and operational techniques; the use of computers, fire attack aircraft, and fire retardant foam. However, innovation and technology can only go so far, it is boots on the fire ground and the volunteers in those boots that fight the majority of bushfires in QLD! So why did I volunteer? Well, partly for comradeship, partly to keep the “grey matter” and body going, also for the sense of community, and to do my bit – it certainly wasn’t for the money! Interested in volunteering? Contact 1st Officer Duncan Sayers 0402 321 526.

It’s soft plastic if it can be scrunched into a tight ball - this includes plastic bags. N atu re N otes A N C I E N T G O N D WA N A L A N D T R E E As a geologist who has spent years searching for gold and diamonds both in Australia and overseas, I was recently rewarded with the discovery of a lifetime - while at home in the front yard at Doonan. While planting the fifth of five trees, and while not entirely happy with the chosen location, I was forced to capitulate with my partner Joanne and begrudgingly started digging. I noticed a small

rock fragment in the turned soil that did not match the local sandstone and clay. After the last tree was done and dusted that small piece of rock was washed and examined more closely and appeared to be petrified wood. Recalling other rock pieces hit by the shovel, the little cogs began to turn. Tree number five was relocated and larger pieces of petrified wood were found in the soil

Son Finbar, helping with the dig.

around it. From

Chris Gaughan, Doonan that point, the buried tree was followed through careful digging. The depth beneath the surface was approximately 25 cm. The excavation revealed a tree trunk (now rock composed of silica and earthy iron oxide) broken into many pieces but essentially lying where it was deposited on a river bank millions of years ago. After fitting the dozens of pieces back together, the length is 1 metre. The sandstone-clay rock sequence at Doonan, the formation in which the treefossil was found, is part of the Myrtle Creek Sandstone. The Myrtle Creek Sandstone formation was deposited in the early Jurassic Period and is 180-210 million years old. At that time, the earth’s continents were joined to make up the super-continent Gondwanaland. A beautiful book from the Noosa Library, The Greening of Gondwana by Mary E. White (1986), has photographs of fossilised trees similar to the one found at Doonan, and of the same Jurassic age. Therefore, given those similarities, the Doonan tree is thought to be a Pentaxylon, a small understory tree from the forests of Gondwana - an amazing find in my front yard at home while planting a Grevillea! And, around 200 million years older than the native that was planted on it in 2016. The excavation went on over a few days and was a lot of fun as more and more pieces, including much larger pieces than the initial fragment, were gradually uncovered. I have not been able to find a record of any other similar fossilised trees in the Sunshine Coast area but there must be more around. I have since noticed small pieces at two other locations about 50 m from the original find.

Part of the tree exposed by excavation.

*The name, distribution and age of the Jurassic Myrtle Creek Sandstone formation was sourced from Rocks and Landscapes of the Sunshine Coast, 2nd Edition, 2007, by Warwick Willmot.

Letters P U T A H AT O N I can’t comprehend why people seem to have an aversion to wearing hats. We live in Qld! I saw more people being sun smart in Melbourne than in our “Sunshine State”. Go to Europe – they’re all wearing hats! There was once a time when you wouldn’t think of leaving the house without a hat on your head. All I can think is it’s not fashionable here and people are too vain. But why wouldn’t you if it’ll save you getting your face carved up to remove skin cancers later in life? And if you are that vain you should be wearing a hat to keep the wrinkles at bay – take it from one who knows. Even in winter the sun burns. Put a hat on! Sincerely Reg, Doonan.

many illegally parked market visitors cars in Cook St, Alice St & Ward St and zeroed right in on residents in the area parked on the curb and hit them with $91 fines. These residents are the very people Council should be show ing leniency to because it is them who tolerate visitors on market days. The parking officers had the cameras that day and were full-on with what could be interpreted as a vindic tive tirade against Eumundi’s own people. The parking fine has been paid now but this leaves a bitter taste and causes resentment that we can all do without. The parking officers shrug it off with, “We are just doing our job, it’s your problem not ours.”

I read recently in Eumundi Green [issue 270] about someone being unfairly [targeted] by parking officers on market days in Eumundi. I liveon Ward St and on market days our norm al day to day parking is inconvenienced by peop le visiting the markets. We don’t mind this and go about our business uncomplaining because it is good for the town and nobody is going to harm anyone. Twice over the years my car has been damaged while parked out front of our house by market visitors doing three point turns trying to squeeze into a parking spot. Again, this is accepted as a way of life and there has been no outcr y from Ward St residents to restrict this area.

Instead Council, its inspectors - whoever is responsible - should show compassion and leniency to Eumundi residents who happen to live near the Eumundi Markets precinct on market days. I’m sure Council can do without a campaign for “Residents Only” parking in Ward St outside ratepayers’ houses, so please look after your own and show some common sense . Michael Whitty, Eumundi.
