Notes Editor’s note ... It’s March - week seven of school, three weeks before term one is over - and I’m yet to find my rhythm for the year. The long hot, dry summer days do tend to throw routine out the car window on the way to the beach to find a reprieve. But now it’s started to rain more and cool - a little – we all can fall into our patterns for the year and find more time for extra events, sporting endeavours and catch ups.

Wendy Domin, Sec Eu Park Recreation & Showgrounds Assoc., Cooroy The Eumundi Showgrounds are open for usage between the hours of 8am and 5pm unless otherwise arranged with our caretaker. Our Caretakers open the gates around 8am and close at 5pm. If there are RV’s camping on the grounds they are given the current code to get in and out of the grounds. This code is periodically changed for security reasons. The grounds are used for many activities at all different times such as the Dragon’s Rugby Union home ground, Ultimate Frisbee Club, Starry Nights drive-in movies, dog agility training, tai chi, yoga, social cricket, festivals and Eumundi’s annual agricultural show. There were a few extremely ignorant people who when walking their dogs on the grounds did not pick up their pets mess, and so have spoilt this privilege for
all dog owners - we have now made it a policy that no dogs are allowed on the grounds unless approved by the caretaker and they must be on leads. Our grounds are not Council grounds so we do not have the privilege of them providing us with a Dog Mess Pickup Post with Plastic bags provided. If anyone wishes to use the grounds the caretakers phone number is on a sign at the gate and they need to contact him to discuss their requirements and it is imperative that the caretakers are informed every time that someone enters the grounds and then again when they are leaving the grounds for insurance and security reasons. I hope that this clears up any misnomers that may be going around re the usage of the grounds and is clear for all to understand.

One of the best views on the Sunshine Coast will soon be easier to get to and enjoy, with the second stage of an upgrade to Mount Ninderry’s walking trails and installation of a new viewing platform about to get underway. When complete, this project will provide hikers with incredible views. Materials for the upgrade will need to be lifted onto the mountain by helicopter and we’re currently waiting for the right weather conditions for that to be able to occur. A top priority for council will be ensuring there is minimal disruption to vegetation and wildlife and we’ll have specialist wildlife spotters on site during construction. I am currently working with the State Government to provide improved safety for children travelling to and from Eumundi Primary School. I have proposed that council construct a safety
crossing zone on Caplick Way immediately to the west of the school’s main entrance. These works will be put up for budget consideration by full council, however I am prepared to provide Divisional funding if necessary to expedite these important works, that will be carried out over the coming Easter school holidays. Once the safety crossing zone has been installed, it is my understanding that the Department of Transport and Main Roads will provide funding for school crossing supervisors at this location. In the meantime, I have also proposed that DTMR install flashing school zone signs as soon as possible. To enable these works to go ahead, alterations will need to be made to the school entrance with regards to curbing and channelling and entrance ramps to the new crossing. Council Engineering Staff are finalising the design as I type.

NOOSA NEW BOUNDARIES Glen Elmes MP I have proudly represented my electorate of Noosa for more than 10 years and I am saddened to potentially lose several communities as part of this major redistribution, the first of its kind in decades. Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale, Weyba Downs, Peregian Springs and parts of Peregian could well be moved to a new Sunshine Coast electoral district called Ninderry. I have looked after these wonderful neighbourhoods for a long time and have many friends and associations with residents who work very hard to look after and help community and environmental groups, sporting groups, service clubs, business and school groups to grow and prosper.
It has been an honour to serve all of those that I will potentially lose, however the Coast is a small place and I will be visiting from time to time. Eumundi primary was the very first school to welcome me as State Member and from the day of my first visit I have been touched by their spirit and dedication for excellence. Recently I have worked closely with Coolum High School on their master plan and am pleased that while the school may no longer be in my electorate we have made significant gains for their future. I have also watched in awe the phenomenal growth and success of St Andrews Anglican College, a community that continues to go from strength to strength. 6

Eumundi Indigenous art curator Paul Curtis is reopening his Red Desert Gallery as part of the Artisan Gallery Eumundi. Paul originally opened the gallery in 1997. “Twenty years have flown by and the gallery has firmly established itself as a premier dealer in Aboriginal Fine Art,” Paul said. Gallery co-owner David Suters said, “I’m thrilled that Paul and Red Desert Gallery will be joining us.” “Paul specialises in central and western desert art by many of Australia’s leading indigenous artists, bringing another dimension to the Gallery,” he shared.
As part of the Lost Arts Exhibition, Discover Eumundi are placing knitting baskets around the village for people to add to. All knitting will be made into blankets by the Eumundi Knitters group (who meet every Friday morning at the Eumundi State School Hall) for charity. Eumundi locations include: Affogato; Berkelouw Café; Coffee Intelligence Agency and Heavenly Blooms, and in Doonan; Sunspace Café.
Imperial Hotel Eumundi is inviting artists and designers to submit ideas for a new Eumundi Brewery logo and label illustrations for three craft beers. There are four prize packages which include: $500 cash, a $250 art supply package from Create Art (based in Eumundi), and tickets to a VIP Artisans Dinner in the new Brewery with brew master Chuck Hahn. LOCAL SHORTLISTED FOR SCFF MODEL QUEST Eumundi’s Amehka Phillips was recently one of seven young women shortlisted for 2017 Model Ambassador of the Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival (SCFF). A former Eumundi State School and Siena Catholic College student, Amehka now studies Civil Engineering at The University of the Sunshine Coast where she balances study with her passion for modeling. “I love strutting my stuff down the runway, it makes me feel confident and empowered!” Amehka said.

In choosing to review Caroline Overington’s latest book, The One Who Got Away, I realise I’m revealing a slightly embarrassing fascination with psychological thrillers about: women locked in relationships with devious and deranged men who are hell bent on controlling them for various nefarious purposes, from which they eventually escape, reclaim their lives and do something terribly satisfying to their oppressors! One of my early favourites was Sleeping with the Enemy by Nancy Price, which was later made into a movie with Julia Roberts. Her carefully plotted escape from an obsessive compulsive, psychopathic husband was riveting. “Gaslighting” is a familiar motif in the genre, as in the 1938 movie, Gaslight, with Ingrid Bergman as the victim made to believe she is losing her mind. A recent example is Girl on a Train by Paula Hawkins, as is Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl which turns the genre on its head. Given the popularity of these novels it’s clear I’m not alone in my fascination. While they may not be great literature, whatever that is, the best of them are very well written by accomplished and skilled writers. Caroline Overington is a bestselling Australian author and an award-winning journalist. Last Woman Hanged, for which she won the 2015 Davitt Award for True Crime Writing, was a masterpiece. The One Who Got Away is the first I’ve read of her fiction, and perhaps the rest is
better, but I expected more from this book. Overington seems to be following a complicated plot recipe with tasteless ingredients. The characters are like cardboard cutouts, mostly unlikeable and confusing. The setting, a Los Angeles community, is artificial and clichéd and Overington can’t seem to decide whether it’s in Australia or America. The use of terms such as “Mom” and then “swimmers” and “barrister” are jarring. But, maybe if the formula is right, nothing else matters. As the cover blurbs say, “An unsettling psychological thriller for fans of Girl on a Train and Gone Girl.” And perhaps the most revealing is the book jacket quote: “I can’t recommend this highly enough Bring on the movie.” I guess we’ll have to wait and see …

Sport E U M U N D I S W I M C A R N I VA L The inaugural Eumundi Swim Carnival will be hosted at the Eumundi Aquatic Centre on Sunday 12 March. The Club’s committee has been working hard on preparations for this exciting event at which over 200 swimmers from Brisbane to Bundaberg will be participating. Thank you to our major sponsor, Sleepy’s, and to our lane sponsors: Eumundi Pharmacy, ZedTwelve, Templeton’s Ginger, Eumundi Dental, Coastal Auto Gates & Doors and the Original Eumundi Markets. Several local businesses have also donated raffle prizes, which will hopefully generate interest in some of our fantastic Eumundi products. This will hopefully become an annual community event.

In the pool, club nights have been going well with swimmers of all levels practising for the upcoming carnival. Last weekend, 18 swimmers travelled to Hervey Bay for a meet and performed very well, with Mitchell Warren coming home as Age Champion. At the Queensland State Sprints, Troy Carlson earned the accolade of State Champion in the 50m Butterfly and was a very close second in the Freestyle. There were a number of excellent individual performances, but it was also great to see the way they supported each other as a team and to hear the cry of, “Go Eumundi!” ring out across the
Chandler pool. Coaches Adrian and Jacinta were proud of the efforts of all those who qualified and are to be congratulated for their support of so many of our local swimmers. A testament to their expertise is that the entire Eumundi Super Squad have qualified for Regional Schools championships this week! Go Eumundi!

Eat This is a favourite of mine for autumn and winter! It just screams comfort food. I used to make French Toast as a kid and have made so many variations over the years. The apple compote (or stewed apples as we called them when we were kids) was another of my favourites growing up and the addition of mascarpone and maple syrup just takes it to the next level ... mmm! You could also serve it with vanilla bean ice cream instead of the mascarpone if you prefer. I hope you enjoy!

On returning home she bought her own cafe Alfresco, formerly on Eumundi Noosa Rd, but is now working with Nina and Civa at Berkelouw Cafe.
Fancy french toast Kaz O’Neill, Eumundi
French Toast with Apple, Ginger and Date Compote Ingredients • 4 apples • 2-4 Medjool dates
• 8 slices bread (I like to use sourdough and slice it 1/2cm thick) • 250 g mascarpone cheese
heat until melted then add ginger, 1 tsp of cinnamon, all spice, vanilla paste and dates. Stir until caramelised.
• 1 tsp vanilla paste
• butter
• 2 tsp cinnamon
• coconut oil
• 1/2 tsp all spice
Method
• 1/4 lime juice
Add apples and stir until coated. Add cup of water and lime juice, turn heat to low and cook until apples are soft and thick but still firm. Add more water if needed.
Peel, core and slice apples. Remove seed from dates and chop. Peel and grate ginger.
Crack eggs into bowl and whisk together with cream and salt. Put to the side.
Heat a splash of coconut oil and a dob of butter on medium
Mix in bowl 250 g mascarpone, 1 tsp of cinnamon and maple

• 1 cup water • 8 eggs • 4 tblsp cream • Pinch of salt
• 3 tsp maple syrup
syrup. Put in fridge. Soak bread both sides in egg mix making sure bread is completely saturated. Heat 1 tblsp of coconut oil and 1 tblsp of butter in frying pan and cook toast until golden brown and cooked through. Plate with apple compote and mascarpone and drizzle a little more maple syrup over the top. If like me you love butter, I suggest buttering your French toast before adding the compote and cheese.

Heritage THE LOST ARTS… BEING FOUND I N E U M U N D I Wendy Birrell, Discover Eumundi manager Not that long ago arts and crafts were considered necessary for both men and women to learn. Skills used in everyday life included: sewing, knitting, crochet and embroidery for women, and wood working and tool making for men. With the increase of mass manufacturing many of these skills were no longer needed and are under threat of being lost. Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre (DE) has many examples in its heritage collection of embroidery, handmade clothing, handmade toys and many tools that date back to the early 1900’s. These were often made out of necessity, in a time when many things could not just be bought from the local store. Today there seems to be a growing interest in these ‘lost arts’ with many taking up knitting needles, learning wood working, and revisiting macramé to name a few. DE is recognising the renewed interest with its current exhibition ‘Lost Arts…and found’ which has objects from its heritage collection that could be considered ‘lost arts’ and rarely handmade today, mixed with local contemporary artists work created with this exhibition in mind. The artists invited to exhibit have produced work that takes these ‘lost arts’ to another dimension, yet still references the past. Included are native plants to make a great variety of string with similar methods used to then make the twine into jewellery. Gleaned objects such as small wooden cotton reels decorated with embroidery have become necklaces. Colourful aluminium saucepan lids are cut and made into drop earrings. Copper wire has been crocheted and knitted, made into tiny baskets with memories inside. Colourful long stitch art pieces

engage and sometimes almost challenge the viewer. Mixed among the contemporary work are vintage and antique pieces, some local family heirlooms including very fine crochet, handsewn christening outfits, weaving, hand knitted and handsewn dolls clothes, embroidery, macramé, toys and other items that may evoke memory, stories and nostalgia for many. There will be many opportunities for people to engage and rediscover some of the ‘lost arts’ and meet the makers during the exhibition through various events. The Heritage Showcase at the Eumundi School of Arts hall Sunday 19 March will also be an opportunity to engage with a variety of ‘lost arts’, including woodworking and pyrography, string making from native plants, miniature canoe making from a seed pod, the art of butter making and an old time form of print making. NAKED CHOOKS? Have you seen a lot of feathers around the yard and are some of your chooks looking a little naked? Don’t panic. It is most likely their annual moult where they lose old feathers and then regrow new ones. This moulting process is completely natural and will usually happen once a year before a season change. Prior to a moult feathers can become dull before they start to shed, and within about six weeks a whole new set of shiny feathers will have emerged. Older hens can take longer to get through a moult. On the Coast at this time of year, many chooks are stripping off and shedding their old feathers. Feathers are made up of 85% protein so it is quite draining on their bodies. They naturally stop laying so they can put all of their energy reserves into making new feathers. Eggs are high in protein so it makes perfect sense to hold off laying. However, laying hens, such as Isa browns, may keep laying, or laying at a reduced rate, and this high energy expenditure is one of the reasons why they have shorter life spans of only 3-5 years on average.
During a moult it doesn’t hurt to up your hens’ dietary protein by about 5%. You may also like to give supplements safe for chickens such as apple cider vinegar, poultry vitamins, liquid seaweed or kelp powder. Some moults can be so severe that the chicken can lose their balance due to the loss of wing weathers, and then extra TLC will be needed (especially if it is getting cold at night). If you have chickens that have their wings clipped to stop them jumping over fences, then it is important to re-clip just one wing once the new feathers have regrown (so approximately six weeks after the first feathers start to drop out). Check out the internet on how to clip a wing, but only do one side so they are more unbalanced when trying to jump or attempt to fly. poultreepark.com

BUSHFIRE RISK MEETING The Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade had a full house at last week’s meeting to find out how you can prepare your home to reduce bushfire risk. The brigade said they’ll posting resources on their Facebook page to respond to local interest, and plan on holding more event soon. The brigade want to encourage people to get in touch if they have any concerns and they will even come out and visit your property.

Over the last couple of years we have noticed the understorey on our property is thinning out rapidly. We said it’s the drought but it’s more than that. One of the prime culprits appears to be Dodder Laurel (Cassytha sp.) which, perhaps as a result of climatic conditions, has invaded and killed off much of the shrubbery and has left leafless dead sticks in brown, open areas which were previously dense, green undergrowth. It starts off as one or two thin tendrils in clumps of grass or sedge, emerging to climb up the lower-growing plants, especially Flat Pea (Platilobium formosum), using these as a stepladder into the taller shrubs and eventually into the medium-sized trees. Dodder is a native parasitic vine with minute suction pads called haustoria with which it attaches to other plants and in the process its tendrils become thicker (up to 2 – 3mm) and intertwined, ending up as a tangled mass which finally kills the host plant. The flowers are white and tiny; the fruits are minute black seeds encased in the 4 – 5mm diameter fleshy perianth.
Birds feed on these and assist with the proliferation of this vine. On our place the Native Hops (Dodonea sp.) and highly perfumed Loganias (Logania albiflora) are particularly vulnerable and are practically wiped out, but young eucalypts are also attacked. Once the vine reaches the trees it can festoon the host with a dense mass of twisted vine. This usually dies off once contact with the ground is lost but which collects dead leaves, bark and twigs, the combined weight often bringing down heavy branches or even the now dead tree itself. Spraying with herbicide is not an option so we hand-remove as much dodder as we can, but until some environmental factor changes we are losing the battle with this plant from hell. No wonder Cassytha is also known as Devil’s Twine.

DEAR FRIEND NEEDING HELP I have a very dear friend who lives in Doonan, who is battling stage four pancreatic cancer. She has endured more than 100 doses of chemotherapy and has reached a stage where her cancer has become resistant to the treatment, meaning that she is faced with very limited options, all of which will involve significant costs which she cannot cover herse lf. She has set up a gofundme page (gofundme .com/leannesfight) which gives more details of what she’s going through. Last I looked, the total was around $5,00 0 but this is only a fraction of what she needs to raise and I fear that we are never going to reach anywhere near the required amount with donations from friends and family alone. I have known Leanne since we were at schoo l and I can’t bear the thought of not trying every thing I possibly can to help her fight this battle with cancer. Since her diagnosis, Leanne is also hugely passionate about raising awareness of pancreatic cancer. It is a very rare cancer with very low surviv al statistics, any additional awareness raised of the disease as a whole could only be positive. Thank you for reading.
