Notes Editor’s note ... It really feels like spring is here now and it’s inspiring us to get out into the garden and get planting again – with visions of transforming the backyard into a tropical paradise and bountiful veggie patch. Eumundi Community Garden couldn’t wait to finally get digging too (page 16). It’s also that time of year when the local fauna gets extra rowdy with reptiles on the move, as well as baby birds and marsupials coming into our houses and onto the roads. Gil from Eumundi’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre always asks us to be extra alert of our native neighbours during spring. And if you do find an animal in distress you can call 5442 8057 or drop in at 1411 Eumundi Noosa Rd.

The most dangerous thing people do on a daily basis is to get into a motor vehicle. Motor vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of death in Australia. Despite this, many people become complacent regarding motor vehicles whether they are a driver, passenger or pedestrian - which can lead to inattention and risky behaviour. The real effect/potential danger of motor vehicles typically isn’t realised until yourself or a person you know is involved in a crash causing injury or worse. The effects of these incidents can severely effect family, friends and the wider community. Queensland Police have identified the “Fatal 5” factors which consistently contribute to fatal road crashes.

1. Distraction and Inattention – Driver distraction is one of the main causes of road crashes, accounting for 1 out of 4 road crashes. Using a mobile phone while driving is highly distracting. Store your phone out of reach when driving to remove temptation. 2. Drink and Drug driving – The best advice regarding alcohol and drug use is simply do not drive. Alcohol and drugs affect your ability to drive safely. Queensland Police conduct random tests for drink and drug driving. 3. Fatigue – If you are feeling sleepy, stop driving immediately. There is no cure for sleepiness except sleep. 4. Seat Belts – You are 10 times more likely to be killed in

a road crash if you are not wearing a seat belt. The first thing you should do once you get in your car is to put your seat belt on and ensure other occupants have theirs on before driving off. 5. Speeding – Speeds just over 5km/h above the speed limit in urban areas, and 10km/h above the speed limit in rural areas are sufficient to double the risk of a casualty crash. Eumundi Police will be continuing to target the “Fatal 5” in an effort to reduce trauma on our local roads. You can help to make our community a safer place by ensuring your driving doesn’t include any of the “Fatal 5” driving behaviours.

If you see any type of suspicious activity, please call Eumundi Police on 5442 8222 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Without information from members of the community we cannot solve these crimes.

PA D D L I N G F O R A C A U S E Eumundi local Wade James recently completed a massive 250km ocean ski paddle from Noosa to Bundaberg in a bid to raise funds and awareness for charity Forget Me Not which is helping to put an end to child trafficking. The Imperial Hotel hosted Wade’s last supper on the Friday night before Wade pushed off early Saturday morning. Forget Me Not Australia’s Chief Executive Officer, Andrea Nave said, “Wade was supported by 50 locals - all ready for some old fashioned fundraising and friendship - 4562 style.”

With a crew of locals cheering him on, Wade set off in his 22 foot long ski in rough seas, from Noosa Surf Life Saving Club. Despite the choppy conditions, Wade managed to clear the shore break and head out to the open ocean. After five days at sea from dawn till dusk, he arrived at Bundaberg Surf Life Saving Club exhausted but in good spirits having raised over $20,000 on his journey. Andrea assured, “The funds Wade raised will help Forget Me

Not Australia address the issue of child trafficking into orphanages.” Wade added, “Orphanages are on the decline, and now we know better, it’s time to stop supporting orphanages and support families instead.” Andrea explained that her research has shown that 85% of kids touted as orphans by many charities, actually have one or both parents alive who are willing to care for them. Wade explained, “That’s why I did this paddle - because it’s time to do better for kids!”

Andrea shared that the evening raised $1300 for the charity. Forget Me Not Australia’s Chief Executive Officer, Andrea Nave and Eumundi’s paddle champion Wade James.

There were plenty of bums on bales, fancy footwork and good old family fun at the Eumundi Rotary Bush Dance in support of our local RSPCA, Wildlife Centre and Friends of the Hound last Saturday night. Many people in our community are concerned with animal welfare and the community was eager for a way to support those who are active in this cause. The evening began early with music, bonfire and sausage sizzle. The fire hotted up and so did the band with all ages Stripping the Willow and gliding into the Turkey Trot. Pizzas followed and then more dancing and a banquet of luscious desserts. The night raised the awareness of our animal friends and their importance in our ecosystems as well as in our homes as an important part of our lives. It will provide some necessary funds for the practical support of animals in need. Eumundi Rotary recognizes our responsibility to protect and care for all our local species and in particular to prevent and remedy the harm that carelessness or cruelty does to animals in our region; much to the shame and distress of the huge majority of caring people in our community.

Prizes for fancy dress, quizzes and lucky hale bales created some excitement and fun. Eumundi Rotary would like to thank our generous sponsors for their donations to this cause. Thanks to Glen Elmes, Bunnings, Gregson and Weight for printing, Rockcote for paint, Colin Crawford for his wonderful dog portrait and the many others who donated in so many ways from supermarkets to local marketeers and local business owners all showed great kindness and support. The Imperial, Joe’s, Sala Thai and Cottonworx were all most generous. Our event was supported also by the worthy volunteers from the Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade and SES.

ADVERTISING...DO WE REALLY NEED IT? Gone are the days that relied heavily on brochures, shop windows and newspaper advertisements, even expensive for sale sign photo boards have become less important, why? The answer lies in what a buyer does when they see your FOR SALE sign... they hop straight on their mobile phone, type in the street address and check out all the photos of your property on the internet! Yep, you got it, Internet is King. In the early Internet days we would list a property on major sites such as realestate.com and it would stay there until it sold but as the demand for Internet advertising has increased, these sites have tailored their programs to suit. So now we have a variety of options, a bunch of properties competing for top spot and we need to pay to be seen. We all want the best dollar we can get for our property, right? To achieve this we need to be seen by more buyers, this creates competition over your property and in turn drives your sale price up. So what to do? Make sure you have good photos and don’t scrimp on Internet advertising or your property will be buried about 10 pages down as a standard listing from day one. Buyers will need to scroll through 60 or so properties before they see you...if they get that far. By investing that bit more, your property will appear in the first couple of pages and you’re SOLD in half the time. I stumbled across an old 1990’s Newspaper the other day …the real estate pages reflected sketch images…WOW….. we have come a long way!!

We recently opened our home to the public for Sustainable House Day and had over 200 people come along to see what we have achieved in less than five years. Brett gave hourly tours and Joe Shlegaris came to help us on the day and brought along his electric Tesla car. It was a beautiful day. A lot of people commented, “Thank you for inspiring us!”

that we sanded, painted and installed ourselves. Non-toxic Rockcote paint is used both inside and out. The house is designed in stages so that we are not repaying a mortgage on parts of a house that we did not need at the time. As we recover financially from the initial start-up of a house build and our family grows we can extend our loan and save for stage two.

The main aim was to share with people that you can build a beautiful, sustainable house on a budget. This house, for us, is as much about financial sustainability as it is about environmental sustainability. Our mortgage repayments are less than what you can rent a bottom of the market house for on the Sunshine Coast. To achieve this, we put in a lot of hard work ourselves, got loads of help from family and friends, and also lived in a caravan with a baby for a while!

We are still learning more about becoming more sustainable. It is our passion to live with minimal impact on the earth - as much as possible! Solar panels, solar hot water, rain water tanks, creating our own compost, using cloth nappies, growing our own food, raising chickens: these things (and more) weren’t optional for us, they were essentials from the start. facebook.com/EcolibriumDesigns.

Community CR GREG ROGE RSON Division 10

Since my most recent Eumundi Green column where I talked about the walk to the C.H. Ball Lookout, more people have come out of the woodwork with further suggestions regarding incomplete paths in and around Eumundi. Whilst I appreciate and applaud the concern and diligence that people have displayed in bringing these issues to light, unfortunately there is no quick-fix, given that the responsibility for fixing these pieces of infrastructure sits across a couple of different levels of government. It’s a matter of working through the due process needed to fix them and unfortunately this will be a lengthy process and will need to take into consideration all the possible funding opportunities and ramifications across all stakeholders. I realise this sounds like a lot of ‘government speak’, better known as ‘hogwash ‘but it is the world we in which I have to work in each and every day. Rest assured I will be doing everything within my power to

resolve these issues in as timely a manner as possible, but don’t expect them all to be solved, implemented and constructed overnight. Wegner Road Bridge After much consultation I’ve managed to get a realignment of the new bridge on Wegner Rd, North Arm. Whilst I was approached by numerous residents regarding what they perceived to be a perfectly safe and serviceable heritage wooden bridge, Council staff have deemed the structure to be at the end of its use-by date and so a concrete bridge which requires little maintenance was to be installed. This new bridge will be built one metre higher than the old bridge, making it more flood resistant. A lot of local resident’s discussion centred on the mindset that the bridge (in their belief) was perfectly fine and that the money would have been far better spent on bitumening the Wegner and North Arm Rds. But even if I had managed to get the new

9

bridge construction put on hold, the money had been allocated out of the ‘Bridge Replacement Program’ and hence the money would have gone to the next bridge in the Hierarchy list and not toward the bituminising of the two roads. As it sits now, the only bitumening that’ll occur will be both approaches to the new bridge for approx 70 metres each. On the aspect of bitumen sealing I have a report coming to council looking at ‘fit for purpose’ road sealing to cater for unsealed roads which have minimal traffic usage but generate extreme dust problems for residents in the immediate area. My push here is to get a good ‘common sense’ approach to the sealing of these minor roads without having to construct them to a Taj Mahal standard - Fingers Crossed!! As I did in Eumundi, I will be utilising the timber from the old bridge to construct a gazebo/ shelter shed on the banks of the North Maroochy River.

WORLD CINEMA PROVING POPULAR Eumundi World Cinema continues to pull impressive numbers for their monthly Wednesday night screenings of international arthouse movies at the School of Arts. At the recent screening of Tracks, organiser Maree Thomson said the night attracted a crowd of just under 80 but numbers were down as many members head overseas this time of year. “Most screenings we’re getting around 100 people with about 50% members and 50% guests,” Maree shared. Every screening is accompanied by supper and dessert that’s themed by the movie’s country of origin and the hall is styled to match by local party hire people Bruce and Lisa from Parti Event Decorators. Eumundi Cinema recently invested in its own screen and projector and will also be a movie venue for the up-coming Noosa International Film Festival in November. For membership head to eumundiworldcinema.com. Nonmembers $20 for movie & supper.

Where the Trees Were is a coming-of-age story by Sunshine Coast author Inga Simpson about a group of childhood friends in 1980s rural NSW and their discovery on one of their farms of a stand of arborglyphs (Aboriginal carved trees marking the graves of significant male elders). The novel details the group’s pact to protect the trees and always be there for each other, and the intricacies of close-knit communities – especially after a tragic accident and one family’s destruction of the trees due to misperceptions about potential land rights claims on their farm. The story alternates between the childhood and early 2000s adult perspective of the main protagonist in her role as a museum curator in Canberra where, with lingering anger and guilt about the trees’ loss, she embarks on a course of action to right a cultural wrong. As someone passionate about the natural environment and indigenous heritage worldwide, I would have liked a louder voice for the trees themselves, and more description of their symbolism, mythology and magical connection to place. However, the book gives an evocative description of a rural farming childhood and the fascination of art history and conservation in the context of government budget cuts and shifting priorities.

It also explores the important contemporary issues of heritage “ownership”, custodianship, care and mistreatment; land use impacts on heritage, and the actions people can take within or external to bureaucratic confines to atone for the past and restore cultural artefacts to their rightful place and people. In this sense, the book can be considered a collective comingof-age for community and political cooperation towards cultural honouring. Health YOU’RE NOT MY TYPE

Jo Deverill

Doctors seem obsessed with taking blood. “A quick scratch,” we say (though it definitely doesn’t feel like a scratch, and it’s not always that quick). On special occasions, we give blood back. But that’s not straight forward either. Blood has dozens of different functions. It carries oxygen from the lungs to the body, carbon dioxide back from the body to the lungs and white blood cells everywhere, neutralising infections and cancers before they take hold. So if your body stops producing blood, or destroys it, or leaks it - you are in mortal trouble. That’s why donations can help save your life. But blood is complex, and filling up with the red stuff isn’t as easy as a trip to the servo. Each drop has hundreds of millions of blood cells in it, and each cell is coated with dozens of different sugars and proteins. The pattern of molecules is unique just to you (unless you have an identical twin): you have inherited half of them from your mother and half from your father. Unfortunately, this really complicates the business of blood transfusion. Your immune

system can pick out someone else’s blood within seconds of injection. Minor differences are tolerated. But major ones (like type A vs type B) provoke a hell of a reaction: the donated blood cells are tagged by antibodies, attacked by self-assembling molecular drills and engulfed by blobby cells in the liver - which digest the remains. So there. If a lot of mismatched blood has been injected (say half a pint), the reaction can be so severe that it kills the patient. Therefore, blood banks go to great lengths to make sure they get a close match, mixing together donor and recipient blood in a test-tube (a process called a cross-match), to make absolutely sure that they get along. Sometimes blood is mixed in the womb too, across the placenta. This can become very dangerous if mother and baby have differences in a blood type

called Rhesus (named after the Rhesus monkey, a close cousin of humans). If baby is Rhesus positive, but mother is Rhesus negative, her immune system can attack. Fortunately, we can block this reaction with an injection called anti-D. And we get anti-D from donated blood too. So the red stuff is bloody useful and we need all types. If you can, please donate: visit donateblood.com.au or call 13 14 95.

There are lots of common questions I get asked from chook owners. Even though chickens are quite hardy creatures, there are certain things that pop up and raise the question of why? We finally got our hands dirty and started planting our citrus orchard! On Sunday 11 September the Eumundi Community Garden became an actual reality! It was a great turn out for our first small event on site with 16 of us - kids included - bringing tools and wheel barrows. Everyone gave a helping hand digging, planting, mulching and watering what a great day we had as the ground was moist and weather perfect. The biggest thanks to all who came and made it happen. Shane Stanley from Noosa’s Farmers Market donated all the trees, so a very big thank you to Shane. Brian painted the solid

stakes for our trees and Doonan Sand and Gravel gave us free soil and fertiliser! Bunnings provided a $100 voucher for organic mulch and a hose. We’d also like to give a big thank you to all of the Eumundi Community Garden Group and EDCA for all its backup and support. And by the way, the plans for the whole community garden are coming along very nicely and the design has been tweaked and changed quite a lot, but we think we’re finally there! The citrus garden is just a drop in the ocean and only the start of a whole new beginning for the area around the old scout hut. FB: Eumundi Community Garden

N atu re N otes SPRINGTIME IN THE GARDEN There is a lovely transition time between winter and spring here on the Sunshine Coast. Our rainforest trees have been shedding many leaves which will be replaced by lovely fresh green new growth. Some, such as our Leichardt tree totally defoliate, dropping thousands of huge leaves on the ground to form wonderful compost over the coming weeks. As I write this it is also raining gently so all our trees and shrubs will get off to a great start for the coming summer. The birds have also responded to the coming spring. Our Eastern Robins already have fledged chicks and many others are carrying nesting materials away in their beaks. Golden Whistlers are singing their magic. Yesterday I saw a pair of Wompoo Pigeons feeding in our fruiting bangalow palms which is a thrill as there aren’t so many of these stunning pigeons around our parts these days. I am still hearing the Noisy Pitta at night and early morning and today for the first time a Koel was calling. However, it is the appearance of fireflies that is the real highlight of September for me. Once the bladder cicadas start to call in the early evening I know it’s time to go out and see the magic of the fireflies along our creek verges. - our very own flash mob. Many other people living along creeks should go outside soon after 6pm and wait for a special 30 minute

Helen Hepburn

show. It really isn’t to be missed and will only last a couple of weeks. I have to put up my hand and confess that I feed certain birds. I only buy corn and sorghum which I feed to Peaceful doves, Bar-shouldered doves plus five Emerald doves. I also feed a large flock of White-headed Pigeons over the winter months. These birds will leave me before Christmas which is lucky as they vacuum up large quantities of corn. There is massive controversy about the feeding of wildlife, but it is a fact that over 50% of households feed wildlife of some sort and get huge enjoyment from doing so. Right now there is a project in progress with a target of 10,000 people to help researchers get a handle on what is happening. The best advice I can give is to keep the food clean and dry and only put out what can be consumed for one feed. Bread should never be fed to any wildlife as the yeast in the bread can cause bloating, malnutrition and even death for some creatures. Mincemeat is another no-no as portions of the mince can be caught in around the tongue and cause bacterial infections. Chopped up chicken necks or strips of ox heart are a safer option. The issue of feeding wildlife is massive and I’ll be very interested in the results of these surveys. Meantime there is much to observe and enjoy at this time of year so please take the time to do so.

THANKS FROM THE HOUNDS A BIG thank you to Bron Innes and the Eumundi Rotary for hosting the Big Bush Dance on Saturday night, 17 September. Much needed funds were raised for the RSPCA in Doonan, the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Eumundi, and Friends of the Hound in Cooroy. A great night of dancing and fun was had by all! Kind Regards, Shaunagh Wood, Friends of the Hound.

Hello beautiful Coast friends! I’ve lived down by Lake Weyba at Weyba Downs for eight years now, and it’s a truly gorgeous area. We are surrounded by protected forest and national park, including a host of native animals, birds, flora and fauna. 17

Driving out of Weyba this morning along Eumarella Rd it is super disappointing to see bags of rubbish literally thrown all over the road, out of car windows, bottles left to waste along the bush track and national park. Please be respectful of the area you live in or visit. Please don’t throw beer bottles, macca’s wrappers, rubbish bags, and general crap all over Eumarella Rd. This is beautiful and special land, and we should all treat it as such. Thank you, Charlotte Mitchell, Lake Weyba.

Council funded toilet beside Humdrum Espresso? I know I would. Hundreds use these facilities with no hygiene on offer. Join us in placing requests to the Sunshine Coast Council to have soap installed ASAP. On another note I’d like to see our park lawns actually watered so they can grow, new lawns planted with the refurbished park are now dead. The gardens around our park need to be replenished with more plants can I suggest we donate extra plants from our own gardens and plant them in the gardens? Perhaps the Council might spend some money on our local park and give us back a BBQ too! Helen Zelinski Rutland, Doonan.

Letters S U Z I L AT I M E R ’ S FA M I LY T H A N K T HE COMMUNITY

On behalf of Suzi and Toby’s families I would like to offer our enormous gratitude to the wider community for the love and care we have all felt and received from this wonderful community during the past few weeks. There are so many people to thank - community members we did not meet - who offered thoughtful assistance and support, walking gently beside us at a time we were all shocked and stunned. To all those who reached out, thank you all so much. Your genuine warmth and shared sorrow provide a soft cushion that did feel safe to rest upon. We have all been touched and amazed by the generosity and kindness of this amazing community. Thanks for the frozen meals, and to the person who made the ready-to-go pizza fillings bag – that was an incredibly loving gesture. So many people to thank … To ePlants for the beautiful display at Suzi’s funeral and to all those who contributed to setting up the area, making it such a memorable day. To Heavenly Blooms for the lovely blooms at the hotel. Thanks to those who dropped off readymade beds for family members. The Eumundi Rise B&B who sponsored family at their accommodation. Those who offered accommodation, showers and bedding. Those who donated the ingredient s for pizzas at Suzi’s wake and huge thanks to whoever helped to

make them! To the Eumundi Market team who helped us with many things - and especially Louise Formosa who was a tower of strength and always thinking one step ahead of us. To Rachel at the Curly Hobbit for your support and strength. St Theresa’s school, Fruits, Eumundi Store, Joe’s Waterhole, Sala Thai Restaurant and the many Eumundi community groups and other local businesses who donated helpful items and offered assistance. The Eumundi Police, paramedics and to those at the scene who held our dear Suzi as if she were their own, we send our love and gratitude. To everyone who set up, shared and donated to the Gofundme, thanks so much. It was started to give faraway friends who felt that the money spent on attending Suzi’s funeral would be better used by the family. We have been humbled by the response. More than just money; just the fact people were offering help in any way touched our heart s and gave us comfort. We all agree that we feel sad for those who didn’t get to meet Suzi and enjoy her warmth. To the staff at Kabi Kabi and NCACCH thank you all for the love and support and moving tribute at Suzi’s service. You took her into your heart s, we consider you all family and for this we are immensely grateful. Thanks to the men who are helping Toby

in the shed – keeping busy and feeling accomplished getting the Nanna flat progressed is an important mission at this time. Suzi loved her children dearly and would have been so proud of the moving tributes they both offered at her funeral. She loved her family and friends with a fierce passion and her cheek y ways will be terribly missed. Suzi would have delighted in the flowery tribute that filled the family home in the days after the accident. Suzi was such a fun-loving cheer ful woman, always ready to help someone else and full of bravado and infectious laughter. For her family and friends Suzi leaves a massive void filled with sweet memories and funny stories. So thank you to anyone we have not mentioned here, you know who you are. We are still looking for a sentimental objec t, a small (20cm) flat wooden heart, if anyone knows where it got to we would be most grateful for its safe return. As a parting message we ask that you encourage friends and family to follow our lead … mobile phones stay in the glove box when driving. Stacey O’Brien
