Notes Editor’s note ... Last week someone said to me, “It must be hard to fill the pages of the Green every fortnight?” I stared at them agog. How do I even begin to explain the mammoth last few weeks in the life of this hinterland community? And that the next two weeks are going to be more of the same! That for a small pocket of people we seem to do a ridiculous amount and our volunteers - who pull remarkable events together for the entertainment of their community - must be the envy of every other region! So instead I just answered, “You’d be surprised!” And even though it’s been a few weeks of fun and happiness, our little community has also been truly saddened by the death of one of our long time, much loved locals – a Mumma who was just driving home to the family after work. It’s sobering to know it could’ve been any one of us. The community is thinking of you.

Business HOT SPOT FOR HAIRDRESSER Leo Wiles It’s all about, “Location, location, location!” smiled Hair & Beauty @Eumundi owner Mim from the hot seat in her salon. With walk-ins always welcome, the bubbly Eumundi mum of three says her move around the corner has made all the difference - that and the changing streetscape of our leafy little town. “Eumundi’s evolving,” explained Mim, who moved around the corner from Eumundi Village to the sunny spot nestled between Pearls for Girls latest emporium and Michelle Shaw’s upmarket Affogatos, Gelato and Coffee.

INSPECT……OR KEEP DRIVING?

B U R R E L L E S TAT E C O M E S T O FA I R This year the Eumundi State School Arts in Action bike competition prize was donated by Granddad and local marketing agent Daz Innes (right) for the Burrell Residential Estate in Eumundi. ESS P&C Chairman Aaron Williams (also Daz’s son -in-law) also roped Daz in to man the BBQ during the event’s festivities. Burrell Estate is 25 land parcels, many with Cooroy Mountain views, and is two minutes’ drive from the village centre.

has been heralded by locals as a boost to overcoming the low supply of land, existing housing and also rental opportunities in the community,” Daz shared.

It’s easy to get used to the way your home looks over time and become blind to lots of little things that a buyer would notice in a heartbeat. So, before you put your house on the market, put your visitor’s eyes on and walk through your property with a pen and paper. Starting from the outside and working through to the interior, you’re going to write a list of things that need doing. If you still draw a blank, here are some helpful hints to consider: • Pressure clean footpaths and concrete drives • Trim back vegetation (especially plants that impede walk ways) • Mulch, mulch, mulch, it hides a multitude of sins and instantly neatens up a garden by adding contrast and colour. • Check the roof, gutters, eaves and exterior walls of the house for mould, especially south and west facing sections. • If the exterior wood finish on decks, railings and posts has become grey or distressed, a quick pressure clean and dry, followed by a fresh coat of oil or varnish will soon bring back the rich timber tones we love. The fact is, most buyers will do a drive-by past a property they are interested in before inspecting it. Simple inexpensive touches like fresh mulch and clean paint say to the buyer that your home has been cared for, that if they bought your home it’s unlikely there would be hidden problems and extra costs as the property has been well maintained. Imagine you’re a buyer… what do you see when you step out of the car to inspect your possible home to be for the first time? First impressions count.

Business RAISING FUNDS FOR ANIMAL CHARITIES

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT F I O N A W I N T E R R E A LT Y Fiona Winter, owner and agent What and where is your business? What do you offer? Fiona Winter Realty is a local and family owned business, active within the community. Specialising in the sale and lease of properties, myself and the Fiona Winter Realty team offer a professional service to our areas of specialty, which stretches from the hinterland suburbs of Doonan and Eumundi to the beach and riverside suburbs of Noosa and Tewantin. Our office occupies a prime position at 777 Eumundi – Noosa Road, Doonan. How long have you been in business? In 2009 I decided to open my own business due to my love of the whole Noosa region. Now I am seven years in with my team and still going strong. I’m passionate about what I do and proud to know that a large percentage of my business is the result of repeat and referral recommendations. What made you choose this area to base your business? So many people come to the Hinterland and fall in love with its natural beauty and aspire to own their own piece of paradise. I’m very thankful that I can work and live in this great spot and love the fact that I can enjoy all that this magical area has to offer on a daily basis. What is the best thing about working here? In real estate you meet new people on a day-to-day basis; you are introduced to new ideas, ways of thinking and opportunities. The opportunity that presents itself every time in my line of work is the ability to be able to help and support my clients. It gives me great joy to assist sellers and buyers, be it downsizing in order to lock up and leave so they can travel, or helping a young family break into the market. What is the worst thing you’ve found about working here? If this is the worst it gets then I welcome it. What would you like to see change in our business district? Keeping with the heritage and culture of Eumundi, it would be great to see future growth with more locally based facilities for new people and families moving to the area to access and enjoy.

The Rotary Club of Eumundi are raising funds for three local animal charities which support wildlife rehabilitation, animal care and animal adoption: Eumundi Wildlife Centre, RSPCA Doonan and Friends of the Hound in Cooroy. Member for Noosa Glen Elmes kick - started the campaign by donating $400 last week. “In the last financial year RSPCA Qld took into care a staggering 51,143 animals. “The RSPCA rely on donations and community support to fund 99% of their annual costs, which gives you an indication of the scale of the problem felt by community groups dealing in this space,” Mr Elmes explained.

“Once again it is mostly the work of grass-root organisations that highlight the plight of those less fortunate, and sometimes those most in need are fluffy with four legs - and who if left homeless, sick or injured, face a dim future,” Mr Elmes said. Rotary Eumundi’s major fundraiser for the campaign will be the Big Bush Dance which will feature bands, bonfires, and dancing. There’ll also be an animal costume parade, damper, supper, sweets and drinks. Tickets are $35 each or $80 for a family of four. redchair.com.au/red-e-tix or 5473 9498.

B R E A K FA S T W I T H C H A M B E R Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher, GM Experience Eumundi Friday 26 saw Bohemian Bungalow host the August Eumundi Chamber of Commerce breakfast, with new owner Ned Nolan and chef David Macintosh welcoming twenty members with a hearty shared patter of local produce. Ned spoke on his international career trajectory running restaurants all over the world (meeting his future wife whilst working in Turkey) – with his most recent success being the multi-sited Butchers Club in Hong Kong and Singapore satisfying Asian demand for quality Australian Beef. He and family now call Eumundi home with a vision to create great food showcasing local growers and local produce at the Bo Ho. Ned as his team are now offering Smokey Sunday Sessions @ The BoHo - low ‘n’ slow cooked smoked local beef, pork and house made sausage - plus all the sides. Vice President Cindy Suters updated members on the progress of the Friday Spring Campaign, which has received overwhelming support from businesses in Eumundi. Fourteen Eumundi businesses have committed to showcasing and promoting Eumundi on Fridays, with more contacting Chamber every day seeking involvement. This pilot wholeof-town event launches Friday 9 September. “I’m astounded

{ T H E G R E E N 31 August 2016

and overwhelmed at the energy, enthusiasm and support by businesses around town for this campaign”, said Cindy. This campaign focuses on showcasing Eumundi skills, talents, personalities as well as products on offer to locals and visitors alike looking for authentic artisan, dining and shopping experiences. “The Friday campaign gives visitors the chance to engage with our community and share what we have to offer beyond Market Days – connecting with our people, our place, our culture and our heritage,” Cindy explained. Cindy also updated members on the results of the recent ECC Members Survey. She indicated that the survey has clearly identified businesses emphasis for action on street-scaping, roundabout entrance statements, footpath upgrades and pedestrian accessibility within the business precinct and park. Also of key importance to members is bringing more consumers into the town on days other than market days, and encouraging more long-term service-oriented businesses to cater for residents, not just tourists/visitors. Next networking function is “Drinks After 5” at the end of September. For more info email Cindy Suters: vice.president@ eumundichamber.biz

pathway and weighing up the costing with community expectations. Boosting business

I have received enquiries from Sacha, the Editor of the Green, who has been hearing concerns from locals regarding the unsafe condition of the partexisting footpath and walking trail from the Eumundi town centre along Eumundi Range Road to the C.H. Ball Lookout. I say ‘part-existing’ due to the fact that there is various concrete and bitumen paths already established along this route, however where the establishment of further pathway has become difficult due to the

demanding terrain, council has placed it in the ‘too hard basket’. I understand that locals utilise this walk on a daily basis and if the existing pathway infrastructure was extended to alleviate safety concerns in the problem areas, locals and tourists alike would be far more inclined to want to use this pathway, which in turn promotes healthier lifestyles. So I’ve taken this issue up with council staff with a view to addressing these safety concerns by extending the

I recently met with ABC Sunshine Coast reporter Rob Blackmore who was doing an indepth story on Eumundi and the apparent increase in businesses vacating the township. While council can provide local businesses with a wealth of business support through our Economic Development Department, unfortunately market forces are out of our control. I’m trying as hard as I possibly can to do whatever possible to make Eumundi an attractive hub for investment and business operation into the future – for example the old service station and Butter Factory/Service Station ‘bookend’ site to the north of the Eumundi township is one site that I’m endeavouring to assist the land owner in the lodgement of what I believe will be a sensational new addition to

I’ve also initiated discussion with council’s Traffic Management and Planning staff to investigate more alfresco dining opportunities within Eumundi and increase the town’s appeal seven days a week – not just on market days. Something BIG on the ‘Horizon’! The countdown is well and truly on for the massive new Arts and Culture Festival lighting up and entertaining the Sunshine Coast region from the hinterland to the sea, north to south. The Horizon Festival from September 2 to 11 will include thought-provoking talks, engaging sculptures, block parties and art competitions, workshops, design technology, culinary delight and visual art and music all served up over ten days! In all there’s more than 220 events taking place regionwide. For more details including a full program, check out horizonfestival.com.au.

Markets EUMUNDI SQUARE SPRING MAKE-OVER COMPETITION Eumundi Square is kicking off spring with fantastic fashion events on Fridays from 10am to 12pm. The fashion intensive starting 9 September will feature: a fashion and style workshop with special guest speakers; a Eumundi makeover competition; and local designer fashion parade.

Natasha Mean, hairstylist from NSM Hair, has over 25 years of experience in the industry. “I’m not going to cut anyone’s hair if they don’t want me to; I’m there to style and bring out the best features in each lucky person I’m hoping they will never want to turn back!” Natasha said.

Lady Serena of Serena’s Image Professional Training Academy will be the guest speaker at the first event. “I’d like to focus on how feeling confident in your clothes doesn’t need to be a hit and miss exercise,” Serena explained.

Local designers at Eumundi Square can’t wait to see what they can do to transform someone’s wardrobe. “Being in the fashion industry, listening to what women want and how many of us don’t think we deserve to look good… this makeover could totally change how someone does look and feel about themselves” says Monique Rylant owner of the “Chantik Rhythm” label.

Lady Serena will also be compering the professional Fashion Parade with experienced models showcasing the new spring collections by local designer labels such as San Nizet, Red Gum, Chantik Rythmn, the Afra Label, and Paisley May. Each Friday throughout spring, Eumundi Square will also be running the Extreme Makeover competition where one lucky entrant will spend an hour with an experienced team of professionals who will completely revamp that person’s hair, makeup and clothes. Makeup artist Donna Anderson from Wild Nature is totally committed to getting the look right and having fun in the process “Makeovers are my favourite - I love seeing peoples’ faces when they look in the mirror and they can’t believe what I’ve done!” Donna shared.

Eumundi Square’s event coordinator Louise Formosa is inviting women of all ages (18 plus), and all shapes and sizes, to register for the weekly makeover. “Registration is free and 12 people will be randomly picked to participate,” Louise explained. Lady Serena shared, “Each person who participates in a makeover will have photos taken (before and after) and I will choose who I think received the best ‘transformation’ at the end of the 12 week period.” The winner will be announced at the Spring Fashion Finale at the Square on 25 November and will receive a $200 gift voucher to spend at the Square.

Arts H I L D E G A A R D ’ S TA B L E Three local women: Mezzo-soprano singer Amanda Cole, naturopath and medical herbalist Heidi Merika, and myself - Anne Harris, conceptual artist - have joined together to create the Three Forces of the SouI as part of the Horizon arts festival. The three of us share a love of plants and nature, an interest in historical women and traditions that shape our cultural history, and are part of the same school community at Pengari Steiner. Three Forces of the Soul takes the musical, healing and the artistic passions of a 12th century German nun, Hildegard of Bingen, and brings them into our modern day lives. The concepts of nature, spirituality and connections to place are explored with this collaborative event. The opening performance, featuring Amanda singing Hildegard’s exquisite chants, is combined with a narration that will help guide the audience through an understanding of Hildegard and her life 900 years ago. “When Hildegard is sung well, it’s like the note you have just sung continues through to the note you are currently singing and provides its own harmony,” Amanda shared. On Saturday the exhibition will be open to the public and the artists will share

Anne Harris the process and ideas behind their work in a series of free community floor talks and demonstrations, including an invitation to visitors to experience singing Hildegard themselves. The exhibition explores concepts that consider spirit, culture, community and its links to nature; there is also a stillness to the learning that plants will share, when you spend time working with them. Sunday will be a sensory workshop encompassing music, art and healing by delving deeper into Hildegard’s teachings. The day will include: a sound workshop with Amanda, hands-on workshop with me that will use creativity as the teacher of concept, and Heidi Photos: Chris Peckham. will share her healing wisdom and you will make your very own remedy. Craft SHADOW PUPPETS This shadow puppet project is a great way to spring into spring - and your child will love experimenting with the puppet on all different surfaces: concrete, grass, walls and floors. It’s easy for kidlets four years and up - with help from a grown-up. As Mr Maker says, “be careful, scissors are sharp!”; so the cutting is best left to mum and dad, while your kidlet can do the tracing, sticking and holding up of the shadow puppet in the sun. It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6!

5. Flip the ring over and glue on the eyes and mouth, then stick on the handle. 6. Take your shadow puppet into the sun for happy play all day! Eumundi mum, Hejira Convery and her daughter Ajuna are keen crafters and Eumundi playgroup members. Kids EMPOWERING GIRLS In the early 80’s I was a pre-teen daughter with a mother that had no comprehension of my changing world, or any concept of how to relate to me. Now I’m a mother of a pre-teen and want to instil in my girl confidence, compassion and kindness. But in the 21st century, where anything of interest is available to my daughter at the click of a button, it can be a challenge. Working with women over the years as a midwife and educator, I’ve seen time and time again the needs and curiosities of young girls not met during critical times of growth. These gaps in knowledge have instead been clumsily filled with information that’s been cobbled together by the girls themselves along the way. Often, any concept of integrity for the sacred transition a girl makes into womanhood

Beth Newman, midwife & teacher

has been missed. This lack of reverence for a girl’s journey from a child emerging into a woman can develop into an unhealthy sense of self, struggles with body image, and lack of empowerment. In previous times, girls on the precipice of change would spend time with their elders gathering information and tools through story, to strengthen their relationship between their heart, mind and body. Young girls would sit in circle, sharing and listening in a quest to understand their developing bodies. Learning would be; exciting, safe and nurturing, encouraging, honest, and open. It is my understanding that there is a great need for creative guidance of our young, emerging women. Finding balance and a healthy sense

of self is so important in this ever evolving, over informative technological world. Our young ones are looking to us for guidance. If we, as adults, provide a safe, loving and fun environment for them to learn, they will flourish beyond our imaginations and be empowered beyond their dreams.

Midwife, educator and celebrant, Beth Newman, and art therapist, teacher and doula Marnie, are holding a Walking with the Emerging Woman workshop for girls aged 11 & 12 year’s old on Saturday 1 October, at Secrets from the Honey Tree , Memorial Dr, Eumundi, from 2 - 5pm $50. Information night; 7 September 7.30-9.30pm (mothers or female care givers only and no children please). Places are limited so bookings essential. bethy5272@yahoo.com.au or 0412 103 743.

This year’s entertainment was provided by the ESS children from Glee Club, Miss Fiona’s Calisthenics, Eumundi’s Got Talent and Wearable Art entries, and really showcased the kids’ talents and creativity. After months of organising, the parents and teachers created an exciting and memorable event for their kids to enjoy with their friends. The night included show rides and games, as well as fabulous food and drinks. One grade two student announced that this was his favourite school day of the year – and the best yet!

Health SPRING DETOXING

Dominique Liv Kamal, Herbalist & author

We see it everywhere - articles on detox therapies, retreats and ideas for that spring cleanse … the house, your wardrobe, your filing cabinets, your car and your body. Yes, this is spring time and when we look in the mirror, those extra pounds and untoned parts surely stand out! So how do you detox? What is it all about? How hard is it? It’s really not that hard to have a body detox. You simply need to avoid any foods and activities that create congestion and stress on your body. Oxidative stress is the number one cause of body congestion and shown in research to be the biggest risk factor for chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes and alcoholism. When you have a stressed environment at work or home you will find it harder to be disciplined in diet and exercise regimes. The number one factor to help with stress reduction is exercise. When you exercise daily, you will have a

healthy balanced metabolism. When your metabolism is balanced, you are reducing toxins in your body on a cellular level consistently. Your body will not be in an accumulative mode where you increase inflammation and congestion. The other highly important factor in body wellness is diet. In my opinion, it’s equal to exercise because what you eat you become. Literally, every piece of food you eat is either assimilated and utilised by the body in a productive way and then naturally eliminated, or it is constrictive to your body,

accumulative and stays with you - as belly fat and increased accumulations of fat in the body. That’s when you decide to detox. Yes, simple. When you feel congested, sluggish, slower or just tired, you need to consider a detox. There are some specific herbs that can help you. Our favourites are milk thistle, dandelion, peppermint and globe artichoke. Milk thistle is known as a hepatoprotective herbal. It protects your liver cells while the toxins are leaving the body. Dandelion is a fabulous blood

and kidney cleanser. Peppermint deodorises the whole digestive tract. Globe artichoke helps liver function, reduces cholesterol and helps the gallbladder. Yes, it’s a great idea to detox at regular intervals and stay healthy. This is the true meaning of preventative health care. In my book The Wellness Zone, I have described many different detox models and how they can work for you. Try a detox this spring and see how you feel afterwards! Reap the benefits of weight reduction, better health and higher energy.

Dominique Liv Kamal has been a regular stallholder at the Original Eumundi Markets for the last 15 years, running a free naturopathic clinic every Saturday; providing free herbal first aid service to market patrons; and offering her range of Medicine Room organic herbal medicines and body products (all made at her dispensary in Maleny). In 2012, Dom was named the Australian Herbalist of the Year. Dom programs Wellness Month in September for the Eumundi Markets, and will be taking to the microphone on Saturday 3 September sharing tips for detoxing.

Health A CRACKING IDEA

Dr Jo Deverill, Emergency Medicine Specialist

Whatever the highs and lows of Australia’s Olympic campaign, it is wonderful that so many nations can compete with each other without blood being spilled. Contrast that with the bloodied image of Omran Daqneesh, the five-year-old Syrian boy injured in a Russian airstrike. War, and its enthusiasts, are the most stupid aspects of human beings. That said, many medical innovations have arisen from the horrors of war: plastic surgery, medevac choppers, and portable ultrasounds came out of WWI, the Korean War and the conflict in Iraq respectively. Perhaps the best known wartime medical innovation was made 150 years ago, in the Crimean War. You’ll often see it being lumped around in the high street, at school pick-up, or on the sidelines of a sports field. You may even have written your name on one! It is the plaster cast. Medics had known, since Egyptian times, that bones heal better when they are splinted. But until the 1850s, this process was cumbersome and messy; using assortments of bark, bamboo, cardboard, wax, cloth, starch and even egg-white. Then in 1854, a Russian army surgeon called Pirogov put his brilliant mind to the problem. He had been impressed by the techniques of a sculptor who

had been using strips of cloth soaked in liquid plaster-of-paris. Instead of applying the method to statues, Pirgov put it on broken limbs. It worked a treat.

or else you could really damage yourself (and the back-slab). If you look after it well, it will last a fortnight, enough to get the healing process started. I often end my hospital shift spattered with plaster. It washes off easily and is a sign I have done a useful job. And I’m lucky that I usually apply it to sporting injuries, rather than war victims.

We’re still using Pirogov’s material 150 years later (with the plaster conveniently preapplied to the cloth in dried form). It is great. Plaster casts are quick, easy to mould, lightweight and strong. Doctors and nurses usually put them on as multi-layer slabs (“backslabs”), applied to one side of the limb over a layer of synthetic wool, held in place with a stretchy bandage. If you are unlucky enough to receive one, don’t wet it or it will fall to bits. And don’t try to scratch an underlying itch with a long object like a pen or screwdriver,

Outdoors AN EVENING WITH BIRDS A crowd of around 200 bird lovers filled Eumundi’s School of Arts Hall last Friday night to spend an evening with bird photographer Raoul Slater, environmental scientist Henry Nix and author Tim Low. Slater charmed with his humorous insight into bird photography and his obsession with capturing a breed’s personality.

and the Eumundi Foundation for Culture and the Arts who all pulled together to deliver such a successful event.

The crowd stayed after the event to mingle, enjoy coffee and delicious cake from Fiona’s Fancies and to meet the speakers.

Old friends Nix and Low used Low’s book Where Song Began as a starting block for discussions about the genetic tracking of a species, South East Qld’s perchance for noisy, colourful birds and the affinity we feel for our local bird life. Adjudicator and event organiser Judith Pattison, thanked the team from Berkelouw Book Club

My son Kaya has always adored drawing birds. He’s crazy about them. Raoul Slater’s family’s bird guide (the Slater Field Guide) is his bible! He recently asked if he could borrow my camera and he took this corker shot of a rufous fantail in our garden – after that he was hooked. Now before school, he does his jobs as quickly as he can so he can race out and bird watch and photograph them. Slightly obsessed, he asked (begged actually) if he could spend his life savings ($140) on a camera of his own - now he’s unstoppable. I’m attaching a few more photos he’s taken in the last few weeks in our Eumundi garden. Considering I grew up in a high rise in central London and only knew pigeons and sparrows, I feel incredibly blessed to live here. Arzu Unel-Cleary, Eumundi.

Keeping your sanity when owning goats Keeping goats can be an exciting addition to your property, or totally frustrating to the point you will quickly re-home them. In my opinion, goats have the most determination out of any living creature. This strong characteristic may mean you either love them or you loath them! 1. Goats are escape artists. 2. Goats will learn your rules quickly but refuse to obey them most of the time. 3. Goats will eat your fruit trees and leave the weeds. Put off? One visit to my farm and you’ll want them again! Their personality, intelligence, affection and joy outweigh any negatives. Many people wonder why I am attracted to these animals when my fencing is in constant need of repair, some trees are missing their leaves, there are holes in my clothes, and after goat cuddles I smell musty - yes, I cuddle all of my 20+ miniature goats.

But goats do have lots of benefits such as: keeping grass down, fertilising and keeping certain weeds at bay. They’re also reasonably gentle on the soil compared to other livestock. In the right environment goats are hardy and additional feed and supplement costs are minimal. The key to successful goat keeping is to be prepared!

Keeping goats 1. Use hinge-joint fencing and go as high as you can but no lower than 1.2m. This fencing is more expensive but will last. Welded mesh dog fencing will soon break at the joints and your goats will be on their merry way around your neighbourhood. 2. Run barbed wire or electric fencing around the bottom of the fencing. 3. If using corner-stays, use star pickets over timber supports. Goats will walk up very

Outdoors W H AT I S B I O D Y N A M I C S ? Rob Birse, Biodynamic gardener I am frequently asked what it is that differentiates Biodynamic farming and gardening from other forms of organic growing. I’ve also mentioned it in passing in previous articles, so I thought it might be timely to explore the differences in this issue. In essence, what characterizes Biodynamics is that its practitioners use a number of specially prepared substances, in addition to working the land using sustainable organic agricultural practices. The fundamental preparation is the soil humus builder, known as Horn Manure. Its polar opposite is Horn Silica, which works with the light forces to enhance the photosynthesis process and intensify flavours, colours and perfumes in plants, while also strengthening the plants against pest and disease attack. Six herbal preparations are also used in combination to guide the healthy breakdown of materials in a compost heap. These preparations arose from indications given by Dr Rudolf Steiner in June 1924, in a series of eight lectures initially titled “Spiritual Foundations for the Renewal of Agriculture”, but now generally known as the Agriculture Course. Steiner was a multi-faceted genius who grew up in what must have been largely un-spoilt rural countryside in Austria in the late 1800s. He was deeply influenced by these powerful landscapes. One of his youthful mentors was an older herb gatherer, who passed on his knowledge of the ancient folk-wisdom regarding the world of nature. Steiner went on to study Philosophy and Science and over the course of his lifetime wrote numerous books and gave thousands of lectures.

GARDENING and veterinarians for help in arresting the declines in crop and animal health they were observing. These serious declines were being recognized only 60 years after Justus von Liebig’s proposal that a plant’s nutritional needs could be met by fertilizing with the major elements of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, which heralded the beginning of chemical agriculture. Another major contributor to the decline was the fact that World War 1 forced munitions manufacturers to develop a synthetic source of nitrogen. After the war, the large stockpiles were made available for use in agriculture and a major industry developed. The ill-considered overuse which followed has had a devastating effect worldwide on soil health and humus levels over the last century! Owing to Rudolf Steiner’s untimely death less than a year after the lecture series, the work of developing the preparations for practical use fell to a group of scientists and farmers who had attended the course. Steiner envisaged the preparations as healing substances for the earth and suggested they be used as widely as possible! The name Biodynamics was given to the system of agriculture developed by this group. Stemming from the Greek words Bios (Life) and Dynamis (Energy), it perfectly encapsulates what the preparations were devised to do: enhance the life forces in our food through working with the life forces pouring through the universe.

The agricultural lectures were in response to requests from farmers 20

GLIDERS IN OUR GARDEN

Cooroy-Eumundi Garden Club’s next meeting is on Monday, 12 Sept, at 9.30am in Donna Dalgety’s garden, Upland Crt, Tinbeerwah. Guest speaker will be Sue Anderson who will talk about Moon Planting. Contact President Tony on 5442 7403 for information.

Helen Hepburn Many Australian mammals have the wow factor when it comes to their adorable appearance. For me, numbats, potoroos, and the smaller wallabies are at the top of the heap. Also high on my list are the various gliders which are found around the northern and eastern coastal areas of the continent. Here in the Eumundi region, we are fortunate to have several varieties including the Greater Glider, Sugar Glider, Squirrel Gliders and the mouse-sized Feather tailed Glider. Sugars are a little smaller than Squirrels (180-230mm) but are of similar appearance and usually have a white tip on their tails. This week, I went outside at about 10pm with my torch and could see two squirrel gliders feeding on the nectar from a huge “Winters Joy” (Dombeya cacuminum) tree that is planted out the front of our house. This tree has provided a fantastic food source during the lean winter months and supported many honeyeater species by day and gliders and flying foxes by night. My neighbour Chris Hartley has just purchased some new and longer lasting nest boxes for her property. Whilst installing the new boxes, the installer checked some of Chris’s older boxes and in the photo you can see the results. Squirrel Gliders. How fantastic. What sweet little faces. (photo: Hollow Log Homes). We also have some nest boxes to suit a variety of animals in our gardens. Even birds such as nightjars and rosellas will utilize the appropriate size and shaped boxes. Another thing to know is that gliders utilize several boxes at a time so they might have a family nest and several dens for sleepovers further away. Any person with building skills can do some DIY nest boxes to help out our wildlife. So, what are we and my neighbour Chris doing so well that we have gliders in our gardens? For starters we have

Library on Saturday 3 Sept, 10-11.30am. Free but bookings required. Sunshine Coast Council & Bio-security Qld will begin wild dog baiting throughout: Belli Park, Eerwah Vale, Gheerulla, Kenilworth, Valdora, Witta and Yandina creek from 5 – 30 Sept. 5475 7272 Celebrate National Organic Week at Yandina Community Gardens with ABC radio’s Annette McFarlane on Saturday 17 September, from 9am. Annette will be discussing organic control of garden pests and diseases followed by a Q&A. Entry $10 (children under 16 years free).

Local expert Pia Dowling discusses keeping chickens at a low cost for a reliable source of eggs & sustainable source of manure, at Cooroy combination of rainforest and sclerophyll acreage, and our creek verges are densely treed. Over the years we have planted hundreds of native and nonnative plants to provide food and shelter. Speaking of food, squirrel gliders need nectar, pollen, insects (grasshoppers, beetles, spiders etc.) and certain tree saps/resins. We do not have free range pets. We have no barbed wire fences. We have had toxic trees such as camphor laurels and Chinese elms removed. In the second photo you can see a squirrel glider who, along with other gliders was being soft released on Chris’s property from our local Wildlife Centre. A release family will spend about a week in an aviary at the release site to get to know the sounds and smells of their new home territory. Chris fed and looked after the gliders until the release night. She also had several glider boxes in her garden as potential homes for the gliders. As their habitat shrinks, it’s fantastic and a privilege to have these marsupials in our gardens. I’m sure many other people in our area also have similar situations to us and also treasure these moments 21

LETTERS FRAME STOLEN FROM SCHOOL OF ARTS HALL As the manager of Discover Eumundi and the person who organises the renting out of the Eumundi School of Arts Hall, I am writing this letter in the hope that an important item that disappeared from the hall is returned. During recent use of the hall we believe someone has gone to an area out of bounds to users and removed a rather large and heavy picture frame with a blackboard in it. This picture frame has significance as it was used in 2012 at the Centenary of the opening of the School of Arts re-enactment and at the Ball held to commemorate this important Eumundi building. Many people in town will remember having their photos taken holding it in front of them, dressed in costume or dressed up for the Centenary Ball.

{ T H E G R E E N 31 August 2016

I discovered the frame missing when I went to get it to use in our current exhibition ‘Trees of Tribute’. The exhibition layout was designed with using this frame in mind and had to be quickly redesigned using a smaller frame as the exhibition opening date was very near when the disappearance was discovered. If anyone has any idea where our frame is please contact me on 5442 8762 or it can be left at the back of Discover Eumundi.

Letters PLANT THIEF We are a local Hinterland property owner who has lived at Belli Park for over 24 years and have loved every moment of our beautiful place. We have worked hard to improve our place over years planting out shrubs and trees for the local wildlife. Just recently we have incurred a theft of our bromeliads that we planted down at the bottom of our driveway next to our property sign. It’s with great disappointment that it not only happened once but twice. Over the 24 years we have never experienced any theft and have felt like we lived in a safe a friendly community. Property owners work hard to keep up property maintenance and to beautify their property and its makes me so angry to know someone is going around stealing people’s plants. I am writing this letter so everyone else becomes aware of the person who is doing this. Yours sincerely, Janena Apap.

MARKET PERSPECTIVE As with anything in life, it depends where you are coming from when looking at anything. If you live on one side of a mountain, you see the mountain in a particular way. Someone else living on the other side of the same mountain has a totally different view. Both are of course totally correct in how they see the mountain. The problem arises when both parties insist that how they see the mountain is the only way it is, without ever having a look from the other person’s side. Louis Formosa showed us his perspective on Eumundi and its markets in the Eumundi Green [Issue 247]. Here is mine. The success of the market came from its originality in products, services and characters. Mr Formosa saw the potential of the market to build his own successful market business. But now it has become hard to differentiate from the original market which has the mantra of: Make it, Bake it, Sew it, Grow it,

with the other markets that surround it, which sell products not made by local artisans. The ideal option would be a win-win situation, which in my opinion would be quite achievable, if Mr Formosa adopted the same formula, that the original market has had since the beginning. I am not interested in politics, but I suspect one reason for not adver tising in a combined effor t to promote the markets is exactly that. I have been a stallholder at the original markets for a long time. Many times I hear visitors telling me, how refreshing it is to see original art and craft. If we go down the road of operating more days a week, we will have lost what once was an original and successful market. Why would a visitor come to Eumundi, if the same type of product or service can be found at any Shopping Centre? Success, in my view, is not always measured in dollars. Fredi Hartsch, Original Eumundi Market stallholder.
