Creative hinterland studios The rolling green hills, picturesque villages, vibrant artisan market, farm doors and close proximity to the beach and Brisbane make the prospect of living in the lush Noosa hinterland a very attractive one. It’s also a stunning and inspirational place to have a studio to let creativity flow. The Green asked two of our local artisans for a look inside their creative spaces and give us a little insight into why they call the hinterland hills home.

A R Z U U N E L - C L E A RY – F I B R E A R T I S T Where is your creative space? In Eumundi up on the range. But my basket of fleeces and felting needle are so mobile that I create anywhere: at the beach, couch, my local café, on long car journeys.

Why do you enjoy working there? My studio, where I also run my workshops, overlooks our garden which is such a well of inspiration. My workspace is bright and airy and I’m surrounded by fibre, mother earth goddess’, gnomes, gumnuts and other found items from bushwalks. Photography is also a big part of my work - so I get to spend hours in the garden ‘playing’ with my little pixies and fairies in little hidden mossy nooks.

Does where you work influence what you create? In many ways, it’s more about how much time I spend in nature and how connected I’m feeling. It might be the tiniest mushroom after the rain, or the colours in the gum tree before the flowers open, or the thought of nature spirits exploring a fairy garden my young boys have created. I don’t have to

be in my studio to access those feelings. A deep connection to Earth or Spirit - or a state of peace and openness can inspire at any time; those heart-expanding moments where everything slows right down. I’m so grateful for work that allows my creations to emerge intuitively - although I do sometimes work to a brief for commissions. Not long after my father passed away, I sat down to make a toadstool, and by the end of it I had an angel which had taken me on a very healing journey.

What is it about felting that you’re so passionate about? I love sculpting. Even eight years down the track I still find it incredible that humble sheep’s fleece can start out as a bundle of wool and can morph into a 3D form with the single point of a barbed felting needle – it’s

quite magical really. Also the colour and feel of the fibres nourish me. Sometimes it’s the actual fibre that can inspire a new piece; a piece of alpaca says ‘gnome beard’ to me and I’m off! Or divine hand-dyed silks and merino wool blended together and suddenly an Earth mother is born.

Upcoming workshops? Where do you exhibit/sell? There is currently a little autumn installation at Sunspace Café. I have a number of workshops coming up in my Eumundi studio (except July which is part of the Maleny Knitfest Fibre Festival). On offer are Intro workshops: toadstools, gnomies & little fairy; Mother earth goddess; enchanted tree; gnome faces; sitting fairy. Full details can be found at Facebook.com/zuzuandme/events. Sharing the hinterland lifestyle John and Sirah Robb from Fiona Winter Realty in Doonan give a little insight into why living in the hinterland is so special and the perfect place to raise a family.

What makes living in the hinterland so special? We love the natural environment, space and community feel. It’s a great place to raise a family and we are only minutes to the beach. We also have family and friends on the Coast, which completes our life.

What does hinterland living offer for your young family? There is plenty of room for Jack to play and explore as he grows and we’re close to lots of wonderful schools. There are plenty of outdoor activities to choose from - bush walks, picnics, or a day at the beach. We can also easily pop into the local markets or go watch a movie.

Why did you choose to base yourselves professionally in this region? We live in Doonan, have investments locally and contribute to the local community through involvement in groups

such as the local fire brigade. Having such a passion for the hinterland lifestyle, it made sense to base ourselves in a location we love.

What is the secret to juggling important work and family obligations with some form of balance - is it fun working with each other? We are both extremely organised in work and life. Working as a husband and wife team also allows us to find a great work / life balance. Because there are two of us we can give our clients 100% - and still give Jack plenty of play time and cuddles. Our weekly catch-ups with the extended family for dinner are a great way to relax, unwind and be with the ones we love. We’ve always had side-projects together such as renovations, subdivisions and buying investment properties. So now every day is less like work and more like doing what you love with the person you love.

Creative hinterland studios ANNE HARRIS – EPHEMERAL ARTIST Where is your creative space? My creative space is very movable. I do have a shed where I work when there’s daylight and I have larger projects happening. Lots of creatures live in the shed, so if the work is small or delicate I tend to work in my house. When I’m harvesting and dreaming my creative space becomes the local bushlands, and I spend time looking and seeing what is in season and in abundance. At night my creative space is at kitchen table or couch, if I’m going to be really honest my creative space sort of takes over every other space...

Why do you enjoy working there? I love what I do, being able to work with the natural surroundings and listen to the seasons, the time I really feel most at peace and have a quiet space in my over active brain is when I’m in the middle of a piece of work and there’s this sort of silence, time vanishes and at the end of the day (I set my alarm so I don’t forget school pickup) I have this deep sense of satisfaction. So where I work isn’t really as important as working itself. Most of the time I have some work that is portable, its the only way I can get anything finished, to be able to put it in my bag and keep working during meetings and after school activities.

Does where you work influence what you create? Yes, my work is very much dependant on where I am, the plants and seasons have such an influence, when I go outside of a day’s walk from here, I begin to feel a bit lost because it all feels so foreign. In saying that, once my work has begun and I have a solid concept that I am working on, its transportable and the outside world doesn’t get me too distracted.

Where do you exhibit/sell? Any workshops coming up? Most of the work I produce is for exhibitions these days. The main focus is workshops and the next round starts with the string workshop at Wan’din’in Eumundi, Friday 26 May. I’m working on a community art installation for the Horizon Festival and workshops will form part of the work that goes into the concept. treeplace.com.au anniesworkroom.com.au
