The Sunshine Coast Hinterland region of Doonan (4562) is a mix of semi-rural/ acreage and residential with panoramic views to the coastline. It had 3142 residents in the last census (2011) with a population density of 0.6 persons per hectare. Doonan’s northern area is within Shire of Noosa, while the southern is within the Sunshine Coast region. Doonan is in two federal electorates: Fairfax and Wide Bay. It is home to a country club, day spa, farm-gates, yoga retreat, shops, cafes and artist studios. Name origin The name Doonan is said to come from the Aboriginal word for ‘leaf of a tree.’ Doonan is also a rare name from Ireland, and hails from the Irish, Ó Dúnáin. The prefix “O” means grandson or descendant of.” Settlement history Doonan was first settled in the late 1800s. Many early settlers had land on what’s now Cash Rd. Settlers earned a living felling timber, dairying, growing cane and pig farming. The Cash family settledd in 1898, built a house of cedar slabs and were the first to bring banana plants in by pack

horse. Local children went to school in Eumundi but as more came to the district, parents applied for a school and Doonan Provisional School was opened in 1919. In 1920 it became a State School until its closure in 1954. Major features Bicentennial Lookout (pictured), Noosa
