Ensuring each generation understands the gift of Christmas

Each holiday season I find myself feeling a little nostalgic. I can smell fudge being prepared in the kitchen, taste the little red cinnamon candies melted into a glass of hot cider, and I can hear the pitter patter of our little girls excitedly running through the house singing “Greatest Time of Year” by Ally and AJ while Elf is playing on the TV. It’s cold outside, and the wind is steadily blowing. The dogs are camping in front of the warm fireplace as the light from the logs fill the room. There are many gifts hiding under the tree, and the excitement level in our family grows daily as Christmas day approaches. Oh, this is a good feeling!

While these wistful memories flood my mind there is one I treasure above all, Christmas morning. We always start our celebration reflecting on the reason for the season. The girls climb upon my lap, and I read the below Scripture.

1Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. 2This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3And everyone was on his way to register for the census, each to his own city. 4Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, 5in order to register along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child. 6While they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth. 7And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. 8In the same region there

were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. 9And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. 10But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; 11for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:1-11

After reading this glorious passage, we spend time in prayer thanking God for sending us His one and only Son—Jesus.

Today, our two girls are older. We also have a son-in-law, and a granddaughter. We do not meet on Christmas morning because our children are starting their own traditions. However, we do gather either just before or after Christmas as a family and continue the tradition of ensuring each generation understands that Christmas is about the greatest gift ever—Jesus, who came as the Savior of the world who offers salvation to anyone who will believe that He is the Son of God.

Have you ever gotten a gift around Christmas and thought, “You shouldn’t have… really take it back?” According to a psychological study there are a variety of bad reasons people give gifts: 1) To change someone gifts…when your spouse dislikes the way you dress and they buy you clothes to fit their taste. 2) To you, for me fits…when you buy a TV for your spouse so you can watch the big game. 3) Aggression gifts… when your ‘ friend’ knows you like Batman but they buy you something Spiderman related. 4) Ritual gifts…when your office throw a part and you have to bring something. And 5) Bragging gifts…when the grandparents get your kids something way outside the agreed upon price range. These are just 5 bad reasons to give a gift.

The real gift is when we think about who the person is…not who we want them to be. Some gifts are unexpected and unwanted…like Jesus. Sure, we know we need him but it would take years for the world to come to terms with the way the Messiah entered the world. At first, he would be rejected by his own people (John 1: 10-11). Later, some of the religious leaders who believed in Jesus didn’t want to admit it…out of a fear of rejection by their peers they rejected Jesus. (Jo hn 12: 42-43)

In order to receive the gift of Jesus, we first have to contempl ate the ways we’ve tried to return the gift…or the ways we have prevented others f rom receiving the gift. I love the way one writer puts it when he suggests that Jesus i s the gift and you and I are the wrapping paper and we have a duty to help the world rec eive the gift that Jesus has to offer. We can’t receive the gift of Jesus if were too busy pretending to have it all together because the gift of Jesus is meant for those wi lling to admit they need him.

This Christmas season may we open our hearts to receive the gif t of Jesus. It’s unexpected and maybe unwanted but exactly what we need: grace. I need grace and so do you. Will you receive Jesus gift? May the gift of Jesus be made evident not despite but through the wrapping paper (us).

The Christmas Date

My first date with my wife was around Christmas 12 years ago. She called and told me to “dress up” for the date, and, wanting desperately to make a good impression, I put on the only suit that I owned and went to pick her up. I knocked on the door, and when she opened it, I was shocked! She stood in the doorway wearing a Christmas sweater, sparkly leggings, a green tulle skirt, and a hat and shoes that had bells on them. We looked at each other and suddenly realized we had completely different understandings of what the words “dress up” meant!

I panicked. Does this mean that I blew my shot? But Kristia just smiled and said, “Are you ready to go?” So we went out—me in my suit and her in her ‘Christmas Elf ’ attire— for a burger and fries at a 60s-themed diner, we saw a Christmas movie at the theater, and we danced under the Christmas lights at a local park. I didn’t say anything then, but I was sure that she was the one.

Since then, it’s become a tradition at Christmas time to reenact this date. This December will be the 13th time! The suit has changed, as have the Christmas sweater, the restaurant, and the movie venue. And, truth be told, we have changed too. But the tradition has lasted. Throughout the year, whenever something goes wrong or doesn’t start out how we expected, we think back to that first Christmas date to remind us that with a little grace for each other, things can turn out better than our plans. Often, the Spirit of God is moving in our mess-ups.

Think of all the “mistakes” of that first Christmas: Joseph gets told that his wife-to-be

is pregnant; Mary’s birth-plan goes out the window when they discover that the inn is full; Jesus rests in a manger instead of the crib that his carpenter dad no doubt built him.

But aren’t the “mistakes” what make this story beautiful? We love to tell it and tell it again because the Christmas story is filled with the unexpected grace of God. Once again, the Spirit of God is moving in the mess-ups.

I’ll go out on a limb and guess that not everything is going to go according to plan this Christmas either. Not for me. Not for you. Maybe dad burns the turkey. Maybe the Amazon delivery doesn’t come in time. Maybe winter weather makes it impossible to travel to see family. My prayer for all of us is that in the midst of the mess-ups, we meet the unexpected grace of God.

JESUS – The Weight Bearer

“For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder.” —Isaiah 9:6

Years ago, when Tomas Tewell was the pastor of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City, he preached a message entitled, “The Weight of the World.” He in structed his parishioners:

Go out the doors of the church this morning. Go five blocks down the street, and in front of the International Building at 630 Fifth Avenue, you will see a beautiful, large statue of Atlas, the strongest man in all the world.

As you look at that statue, notice that Atlas is a handsomely proportioned man with enormous shoulders, rippling muscles, bulging thighs. But he is weighted down, for he is bearing the entire weight of all the world on his shoulders . . .”

Tewell added, “Unless I miss my guess, there’s someone in the sanctuary this morning who feels that you have the entire weight of the world on your shoulders.”

Are you that person? Are you bearing the weight of caring for an aging loved one—a parent, a spouse, a sibling, a friend? Are you the primary bread winner in your family? Are you feeling the weight of making ends meet and trying to keep the money from running out before the month does, and the race between the two happens every month, month after month? Are you weary of holding it all up and keeping it all together—your family, your marriage, your finances, your job, your sanity?

Tewell concluded:

If you cross the street from 630 Fifth Avenue, the International Building where Atlas is, you’ll go right in the front door of St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Go down there on the left-hand side, and almost all the way up by the altar on the left-hand side you will see a statue of Joseph holding the baby Jesus. Jesus’ arms are outstretched, and He’s got a smile on His face as radiant as the sun. As I look at Jesus the baby with His arms outstretched, it’s almost as if He’s got the whole world right in His hands, and it’s light.

I often go by those two statues. And when I go by, I ask myself a question: “Is the gov ernment of my life on my shoulders or on Christ’s?”

Jesus is more than able to bear the weight of your burdens. Better yet, we wants to do so, but He can’t as long as you keep clinging to them. Let go. Relinquish to Him the gov ernment of your life. Let Him carry weight of your burdens for you. He is a burden-bearer extraordinaire.

The greatest weight we carry is the guilt of our sin. It is for us a weight too heavy to shoulder. This Christmas reminds us that to us a Son was given. He came to bear the weight of our sin and the government of our life. Let Him do so.

A Special Thanksgiving Memory

(Genesis 1:28)

It was indeed a very special Thanksgiving. It was the Thanksgiving of 2000, twenty two years ago this month. It would be the Thanksgiving my wife’s entire family and I would eat our traditional turkey dinner together. Our meal was always eaten at the home of Laura’s parents Virgil and Eleanor Streck, on Merrimac Drive in the Country Club West addition. Eleanor passed before the next Thanksgiving would arrive in 2001. She died in September.

What a wonderful meal and time of fellowship. Twelve of us gathered around the family dining room table. Her four brothers and their spouses, Laura and I, and her dad and mom joined together around the family table. Eleanor co oked the turkey and all the kids brought in Thanksgiving dishes of all sorts. There was cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, dressing, corn, pickles, beets, sweet potatoes with marshmallows on top, rolls, and all kinds of desserts and salads. We had iced tea, coffee, water and even apple cider. What a feast we had that afternoon. But it wasn’t just the food. We were all followers of Christ. We all attended great churches. Before we began the meal I led in prayer. Everyone was in the spirit of joy and thanksgiving. We shared stories together, laughed together, soaking in the blessing of family and fel lowship one with each other. It will stand out in my mind as one of the most special Thanksgivings ever. Growing up we had special meals together with my own siblings and parents. Oh, that people would value the family and it inst itution ordained by God himself. In Genesis God ordained the family to be the rock of c ivilization. Amen!

A Thrill of Hope

I’m a HUGE Christmas fan. I love everything about the season. I love the music, the food, the family and friends, the gatherings, the concerts, the lights, the memories through the years. For me…it truly is the most wonderful time of the year!

So, what is it that makes the season so upbeat and special? As you reflect on that, I wonder if you would come up with the same thoughts that I did. It seems like the whole Holiday Season of Thanksgiving to Christmas gives people a different attitude and outlook than any other time of the year. It feels like people are generally more joyful and more hopeful. And there’s good reason, of course.

When it comes to Christmas music, I’m a nut. I want to turn it on too early. I make myself wait till after Halloween, but my daughters are huge fans too, and sometimes that means the music starts a little early in my house! One of the classics of Christmas is “Oh Holy Night”. It’s a great song with a great message. “Oh Holy Night” tells the Christmas story, expresses the hope of the season, gives you the “feeling” of Christmas, all in about three minutes and thirty seconds. Its lyrics are rich with deep and profound theological truths.

One of the lines of that song that is so gripping for me is: “A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices.” How true. It was true in the first century when Jesus was born and it’s true today. In that first century world, the Israelites were under Roman occupation and the hope of the Messiah was growing dim for many. There was darkness and sin. They were weary in that season when Jesus came into the world. And that same world is weary still

today. It’s off. It’s fallen and sinful. Loved ones fight, there are aches and pains, there is evil and tragedy, too busy and with little satisfaction, we have too much or not enough, we’re always longing for something, and it’s into this world that God sends His Son, Jesus. And when the baby Jesus enters, hope enters. And hope is thrilling! There is a thrill of hope and the weary world rejoices because God has sent His one and only Son to make His dwelling among us and to save us. Heaven has come to earth. And hope has finally come!

And this is the thrilling hope that makes the Christmas season special. The reason that everyone’s spirits are lifted, the reason for more manners and politeness, the reason for a better facial expression and maybe a little more generosity…we all have the hope of life in Christ, our Savior. He’s the gift of heaven. He’s available to everyone who will accept Him. And it will truly give you a thrill of hope. And maybe once again…our weary old world will rejoice. I pray you find the gift of Christ this Christmas season and always. He came for you!

The Perfect Gift

As we frantically scurry about racing the clock looking for tha t perfect gift for our friends and loved ones, I would like to give you a few things t o consider in making choices for that perfect gift.

I might be a little biased in believing the bible has the answe r to every situation, including gift giving. But before we get into the perfect gift selection let me give you some historical background on the term “gift”.

The word “gift” originated in the Old Norse languages. At the time of its inception, it was pronounced “gipt”. Over time this term merged with the English word give, creating the new Middle English term gift. The Oxford Dictionary defines a gift as a thing given willingly to someone with no expectation of payment in return.

When we are considering what gifts to get for our friends and l oved ones, I believe it is best to consider the purpose of a gift. What would we like to accomplish by giving this gift.

Many would argue that the purpose of a gift is to bring joy, or happiness into the life of the receiver. Gifts are also used the express love, care and concern for the receiver.

All that being taken into consideration, I will once again look to the Holy Scriptures for an example on giving the perfect gift. The scripture I will refer to is the

most famous and most quoted scripture in the bible. John 3:16 w hich says,

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have ever lasting life. ”

God is the giver of the perfect gift and that gift is his only begotten Son and His name is Jesus. This gift checks all the boxes for the criteria of the perfect gift.

The purpose of this gift is to bring love, joy, peace and happiness to all who would receive it. It truly is the gift that keeps on giving.

The Enid News & Eagle is asking our readers to join us in raising enough money to feed at least 75 children with this year’s Community Christmas Card. All funds raised through this project will go toward the Food for Kids Enid project.

With a donation of at least $1 per name, you can list names on the Community Christmas Card, which will be published in the Christmas Greetings section of the Enid News & Eagle. Organizations, schools or church classes, businesses and individuals may sign the card.
