inspiration By Rob Houston Visit Enid Director There’s a fun element of surprise to public art. It may spark an unexpected discussion, or prove to be an exciting opportunity for a selfie. It brings a new kind of beauty and originality to the area. It enhances our local culture. At times, it may spark controversy. Above all else, it reminds us that there is art all around us. Enid’s diversity in its public art, from sculptures dating back 100 years to exciting murals that have popped up in the last 7-10 years, has people around the state and region recognizing Enid as one of Oklahoma’s fastest growing arts cities. Public art directly supports cultural tourism and economic development strategies, improving Enid’s chances at attracting new and visiting populations. It also brings a sense of pride to its residents by enhancing the identity and character of our city. Enjoy this Enid Public Art Guide and a little history on each piece. Find a mural or sculpture you didn’t know existed. Take a selfie. Keep an eye out for more public art as you drive around our city. Remember, there is art all around us.

PUBLIC ART

Guide

The Enid News & Eagle and Eagle Marketing are pleased to present this printed collection of Enid’s unique and amazing public art, including murals, sculptures and statues. When you drive around Enid, you will find a wonderful outdoor gallery of fine art that everyone can enjoy. Enid has more than 70 murals, statues and monuments that are visible to the public simply walking or driving by. These works of fine art include some of our state’s and area’s current promising artists, including Kelly & Ty Tompkins, Tox Murillo, Brandon Beichler, Chris Bodelle, H. Holden, Katelynn Noel Knick, Romy Owens, Emily Clark, Rick Sinnett, Christy Timberlake, Jack Fowler, Tanner Frady, Ashley Dawn, Paul Stone, Bill Thompson, Jason Pawley, Kari Higgins, Michael Shuck, Pam Gilbraith, Cheryl Swanson, Hogen Burleigh, Christin Juliano, Jack Morgan, Sean Wills, Sophie Holle and Wayne Shearon. A number or works, including some historic statues and monuments, were commissioned to artists outside the Enid area. Mural designs have exploded in Enid over the last several years, and new art is popping up almost every week. We have made every effort to include all the outdoor works in Enid. We also included historic murals by Ruth Monro Augur that are found inside the Garfield County Courthouse. Several businesses and organizations also have murals inside their buildings, so you can see a number of other impressive artworks just by visiting local businesses. Additionally, four trafficcalming crosswalk works of art have been painted in the downtown area to improve walkability. Enid News & Eagle photographer Billy Hefton took the majority of photos for this project. Kary Randles, graphic artist, designed the guide We want to give special acknowledgment to Rob Houston with VisitEnid and Kelly Tompkins, with Hive Appeal, for helping us document as many works of local art as best as possible for this publication. We will be continuing to document new murals as they are created, and keep them updated on a web link to the public art guide. We thank Visit Enid, Enid Regional Development Alliance, Security National Bank, Main Street Enid and Park Avenue Thrift for sponsoring this publication.
