Walk a mile in your neighbors’ shoes

The Southern End encompasses a network of business owners, neighborhoods and farmers that is as rich in friendships as it is fertile soil. Familiar faces and deeply rooted bonds serve as the foundation of the many small communities scattered across the rolling hills and rural countryside. Although residents of the area are more than likely to see their neighbors and storefront owners at church and local farm shows, how many of us are aware of struggles that our neighbors face at home and in their daily lives?

Nonprofit organization Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNM) recently announced A Mile in My

Shoes, a new event that seeks to bring the Southern End community closer together and to highlight the specific needs of its

members. The fundraiser will be held on Thursday, May 2, at Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike,

Quarryville. A Mile in My Shoes will kick off with breakfast from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m., followed by a presentation from SNM executive director Teresa Dolan. Dolan will highlight the organization’s many programs that address issues such as food insecurity and offer educational resources to local residents. The presentation will also include testimonials from individuals whom SNM has served through its initiatives before wrapping up at 9:45 a.m.

“The fundraiser is a big part, but we realized people don’t know all of what we offer the community,” Dolan said. “The food bank is huge, but we also have so many wraparound services. We thought this would be a good

Through getaways, PA Family Travel Fair brings people together

Sometimes we try too hard. Sometimes we overthink things. Sometimes the answer is right in front of us.

The PA Family Travel Fair has a unique way of simplifying things. The lively event focuses on recreation, on Pennsylvania, on family.

“Recreation is so important to your well-being,” said Wendy Royal, organizer of the PA Family

Travel Fair and editor of Where & When Pennsylvania. “It’s crucial to your health to check out of your job. It can just be a long weekend. But it’s time with kids too. It’s important for families to spend time together. It’s important to get away and make those memories. You only get 18 summers with your kids.”

The sixth edition of the annual PA Family Travel Fair, hosted by Where & When Pennsylvania, will be presented on Saturday,

Presentation to highlight Founding Fathers

Solanco Historical Society will host a presentation on Saturday, April 20, at the society’s archives building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. The free program will begin at 1:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Gene Pisasale will present “Forgotten Founding Fathers: Pennsylvania and Delaware in the American Revolution.” This lecture explores the foundations of the U.S., with emphasis on the key roles that 10 men from Pennsylvania and Delaware played in the struggle for liberty and the creation of the United States’ system of government. These individuals were hands-on participants in the events that helped form the U.S., and they signed the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.

Pisasale is a historian and author who lives in Kennett Square. He has written 10 books, conducts an ongoing lecture series, and contributes a column titled “Living History” to media outlets in the Philadelphia area. He graduated summa cum laude from American Public University with a master’s degree in American history. He began his career as a petroleum geologist and later worked as an energy analyst and a portfolio manager in the investment and banking industries.

Ladies’ Tea and Auction

from pg 1

their tables on the Friday evening before the tea. Themes last year included lemon-themed tables, a bird-themed table and a Christmas table featuring the hostess’s nutcracker collection.

“One lady got custom cookies to give to her guests as a gift that matched her table. It’s very fancy,” said Jennie Straub, Cornerstone’s executive director, noting that a hat contest will also take place.

A panel of volunteers will judge the tables and the hat contest to determine the winners. “(They will judge) the theme of the table, the elegance of the table and the originality,” explained Straub. “(For the hat contest), winners will be the hat that matches the theme, the prettiest hat and the most original hat.”

Menu items, which will be prepared by Hillary Prickett from The Salted Apron, will include veggies and cream cheese on a flatbread, yogurt parfait, chicken salad on a croissant, veggie wraps, pinwheels with pesto, tea sandwiches and scones with lemon curd and jelly.

Desserts will be mini apple rose pies, lemon mascarpone tarts and blackberry cupcakes.

Additionally, the tea will feature a live auction, including live flowers and items donated by local businesses. This year, auction items will include tickets to Sight & Sound Theatres, paintings, flower arrangements, jewelry, gift baskets and restaurant gift cards.

Proceeds from the auction will benefit the ministry. “Cornerstone is a nonprofit medical clinic for women or men who are experiencing an unintended pregnancy. We changed the name officially last summer,” Straub explained. “We changed to reproductive health because we are offering more services now. We do STI and STD testing that is free. We felt that reproductive health was more up-to-date and encompassing all the services we provide, not just pregnancy services.”

Cornerstone also has a new mobile medical unit that is ready to provide services. “Our plan is to have the unit go out two to three days a week and on the other days have it here at the clinic available for appointments,” Straub noted. For more information, to host a table or to purchase tickets for the upcoming tea, visit www .pacornerstone.org, choose “About” and then select “Events.” The tea is open to women age 18 and older. Tickets purchased before Thursday, April 25, will be discounted. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Travel Fair

April 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a new location, John Bonfield Elementary School, 101 N. Oak St., Lititz. The event is free to attend.

“There’s nothing else like this in the state of Pennsylvania,” said Royal. “We call it a travel fair because it’s fun and informative. I’m amazed by how little people know about things to do in Pennsylvania. I’ve had so many people say to me, ‘Why doesn’t the state do this?’ The state of Pennsylvania tourism office’s job is to bring people in. Our goal with the travel fair is to keep some of those tax dollars here. We’re trying to get people to spend some of their money in our state.”

born in Pennsylvania. It all started in Philadelphia, and at one point, Pittsburgh was the wild west. So much has happened here. There’s so much history, and there’s so much fun.”

The PA Family Travel Fair was started in 2018 as a way to meet a need for affordable family vacations. Since then, the need for recreation or for family togetherness hasn’t changed. In fact, if anything, it has grown stronger.

“Way too many of us are leaving vacation days on the table at the end of the year,” said Royal. “(Family vacations are) a time when we can connect. We encourage families to spend time together and disconnect from technology. There are a lot of fun things to do with the family, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Or you can make it a history trip.”

The presentation will also feature interactive activities that will give attendees an opportunity to work through real-life scenarios faced by local families on a daily basis. The number of people served by SNM has steadily climbed in recent years; at Easter time, the organization distributed meals to 97 families, whereas roughly 70 families requested meals last spring. Additionally, the number of calls received by SNM has nearly doubled since 2022. Dolan said she attributes the growing numbers to the organization’s move to a more visible location in downtown Quarryville,

as well as the ever-rising costs of food and basic necessities. “We want to show people the different ways we fulfill our mission to engage families, meet our neighbors’ needs and to give people hope,”

Museum restores iron lung

The Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum, 410 N. Lime St., Lancaster, has completed the restoration and preservation of its iron lung exhibit. The completion of this project marks a milestone in the museum’s dedication to preserving medical history for future generations.

Originally acquired by the museum in the 2000s, the iron lung has stood as a symbol of medical innovation and the fight against polio. Its historical significance, coupled with its intricate engineering, made it a focal point of interest for visitors and researchers alike. Over the years, however, the iron lung began to show signs of wear and deterioration, prompting the museum’s preservation team to undertake the preservation process.

Led by Dr. Jon Schrock and executive director Kim Jovinelli, the restoration process involved meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of the iron lung’s mechanics. Every aspect of the exhibit, from its exterior casing to its internal components, was carefully assessed and preserved. Specialized techniques were employed to address corrosion, mechanical issues, and aesthetic concerns, ensuring that the iron lung retained its historical integrity while also complying with modern preservation standards.
