Embrace fitness and fellowship with F3 Lanco

Filled with stress, struggles and challenges, life can be difficult. But there are safeguards in place designed to lessen the burden.

An all-men’s social club, F3 Lanco (Fitness, Faith, Fellowship) takes a proactive approach toward diffusing hardships and improving the quality of life. For the key to the club’s success, one doesn’t need to look much further than its name.

“Just in general, I think guys sometimes have a hard time making new connections,” said Keith Martin, F3 Lanco’s leader. “As we get older, some of those connections we had when we were younger fade away. Men do

have a hard time finding the time to socialize. With F3, we can get after something and have that connection.”

Already well established in the county, F3 Lanco has now found its way into Manheim Township.

F3 Lanco began meeting at Manheim Township’s Overlook Park, 2040 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, at the end of April. The informal, 45-minute sessions, which are conducted at dawn every Monday, consist of structured workouts, support and friendship.

“Fitness is what brings everybody out,” said Martin, a resident of Landisville. “We want to be fit, and sometimes in our busy lives, we put it on the back burner. We’re looking for an opportunity

to better ourselves. Friendship is the glue that develops the bonds. It’s about being there for the other guys. A lot of our guys are dedicating themselves to their families, and this gives them an opportunity to network with other men. Some people hear the word ‘faith,’ and they think, ‘Oh, it’s a religious group.’ But faith to us means just being part of something bigger than yourself.”

While each meeting is a unique experience, there are certain commonalities. Every session is free, they’re open to all men, they’re always conducted outdoors, they’re peer led and they always end in a circle-of-trust exercise. Men need not preregister for the meetings; they

One of humans’ four basic needs for survival, shelter is more than a means of keeping rain off our backs, wind off our necks and sun out of our eyes. Houses become homes because

they provide stability, they foster growth, they allow us to lead better lives.

Born out of necessity, Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity (LLHFH) has been providing housing for Lancaster County residents for 38 years. Now the

Geographically, it’s a 9-mile northwest move. Developmentally, it’s a move in a different direction.

Eastern Mennonite University at Lancaster (EMU at Lancaster) is on the move. In two months, the private liberal arts university based in Harrisonburg, Va., will officially relocate its Lancaster campus from East Lampeter Township to Warwick Township.

“It will provide more modern space for our students,” said Christine Sharp, EMU at Lancaster’s executive director. “The common space is large and open. We’ll be closer to the (Lancaster) airport.”

Located within the Greenfield Corporate Center at 1846 Charter Lane, Suite 212, Lancaster, for the last 30 years, EMU at Lancaster is moving its four classrooms to the Listrak building at 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz, in

Habitat for Humanity

affordable housing organization is introducing a new program intended to expand its footprint in the county and beyond.

“Homeownership is a game changer for families,” said Amy Balestier, LLHFH’s vice president of development and communications. “When they can build wealth, (homeowners) can build their own brighter futures. When you’re living paycheck to paycheck, that isn’t possible. What we have found is that when people own their homes, their children are more likely to go on to college or own their own homes. In essence, we’re helping to fund the future. It doesn’t stop with one Habitat home. There are a lot of success stories.”

LLHFH has launched an ambitious $4 million campaign called Open Doors, which is designed to address the ongoing shortage of affordable housing. LLHFH has already raised the first $3.2 million toward its goal and is seeking to garner the rest through appeals, public and private donations and special events.

“A safe, dry, warm and affordable home offers a family a new chapter in life and the opportunity to build a brighter future,” said Andrew Szalay, LLHFH’s CEO and president. “Open Doors is an important path to Habitat’s capacity to make a bigger impact on our local housing needs. Maybe you’re a low-income renter and you want to be part of the American Dream. You may not have a security deposit (to rent a home), much less a down payment (to purchase a house). It’s a mountain to climb. It’s almost out of the question for some families. But it’s something that Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for

Humanity is overcoming.”

With the money it raises, LLHFH hopes to provide 30 houses, either through new construction or the renovation of existing structures, to first-time home buyers by 2026. The constructions currently being considered are located in the city of Lancaster, Columbia Borough and the city of Lebanon.

“We’re both the builder and the lender, so we can work on the finances to get people into these houses,” said Szalay. “How did we get here? Our population has grown, and our sophistication has grown, and the costs of houses have risen over the years. It’s become more profitable to build bigger houses. We’re here to empower first-time home buyers.”

From a total of 115 applicants, LLHFH is currently serving 22 locals interested in affordable housing.

“They’re the fabric of our community,” said Balestier. “They’re helping make our community run, but they can’t afford to live here. Many are coming from a rent situation and can’t afford to continue to rent. We have applicants who are single. Most are families with children who are looking to live near their work or where their children go to school. We want to build where our families want to live. It makes life a little easier.”

LLHFH is one of 2,100 affiliates of Habitat for Humanity across 100 countries. Since being established in 1986, the local chapter has provided over 250 new or renovated homes.

should simply show up.

“Something happened in my life, and I had some friends reach out to me,” said Patrick Cloonan, a resident of Manheim Township who’s helping coordinate F3 Lanco’s local recruitment efforts. “They said, ‘If you need anything, let us know.’ They suggested an F3 meeting, and I didn’t want to go. I didn’t want to be there, but I was happy when I was. I always liked fitness, and that was the glue. I came to realize that it was the place for me. That’s my story, but everybody’s story is different.”

An international organization of 4,543 regular workout groups in 370 regions of the world, F3 was introduced in Lancaster County by transplant Gary Fyke in October of 2017. Currently, about

200 local men meet for F3 workouts five times a week at Rapho Township Community Park, 960 Strickler Road, Mount Joy, and Mountville Park, 351 N. Lemon St., Mountville.

“Perspective and empathy are very important to me,” said Martin. “Knowing that other people are going through similar things gives me a better vision of the world around me. These are guys who are looking to improve something in their lives. There’s something missing. They’re looking to improve themselves, and they come into the workouts with the idea of wanting to make others better. They have good hearts.”

time for summer classes to begin July 1. The move will provide EMU at Lancaster with an additional 5,000 square feet for classrooms, a certified nursing assistant (CNA) training laboratory, student advisory areas, a cafeteria and coffee bar, ample parking and outdoor space.

EMU at Lancaster executed a multi-year lease and plans to perform some minor upgrades to the property’s infrastructure, information technology and communications.

“We take pride in our sense of community and serving our community, whether it’s through credited or non-credited courses,” said Sharp. “Our mission in Lancaster is to provide programs that aren’t available in other sectors. Our vision is to serve our students with high-quality education. Our goal is to have a building that’s welcoming to students and instructors. We’re moving to a state-of-the-art building.”

“Like many commercial landlords, we have re-evaluated our physical properties and have determined that we do not need the entire 93,000 square feet of our headquarters building,” said Ross Kramer, Listrak’s CEO.

“As strong supporters of STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), we felt that EMU at Lancaster would be a great fit and believe the new space will provide a learning environment conducive to students’ academic and professional growth.”

EMU at Lancaster’s current enrollment is over 400 students, but many attend through online courses. When the university opens its Warwick Township location, nearly 100 students are expected to attend weekly.

“The needs of today’s workforce are constantly changing,” said Sharp. “EMU at Lancaster is committed to providing postsecondary education and professional development training that offers students a competitive advantage. Our mission is to ensure that those who complete our programs are well prepared to make valuable contributions to the workforce and communities.”

Church to host cello concert on First Friday

Lancaster cellist Sara Male will be featured in a 30-minute concert on First Friday, May 3, at 8 p.m. at First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m.

Eastern Mennonite University first established its local campus at a temporary location in Lancaster in 1996 before moving to Greenfield Corporate Center in 2002.

In addition to its CNA program, EMU at Lancaster offers a bachelor’s degree in leadership and organizational management, with an aviation concentration. The university plans to add a drone technology education program this fall.

“We want to graduate students who are forward-thinking and life citizens,” said Sharp. “We want our students to have a global understanding. Our goal is to raise strong leaders with compassion, not only in their lives but also their professional lives. We’re here to provide a pathway to students who may not have thought of education before.”

The selections will include Saint-Saëns’ “The Swan,” Haydn’s “Divertimento,” and “Sicilienne” by Maria Theresia von Paradis. Male will be accompanied at the piano by Larry Hershey.

Male is the principal cellist of the York Symphony Orchestra, acting principal cellist of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO), and chair of the LSO board of directors. She regularly performs with the Reading Symphony, Kennett Symphony, and Harrisburg Symphony, and she is a member of Duo Chiaroscuro. She also collaborates in chamber-music programs with her husband, violist Peter Kenote. A private
