“Ilike that statement, ‘I may have saved your life today,’” said Anita Fieldsa, member of the Paradise Township Lions Club, responding the the idea that blood donors should wear a sticker bearing those words. The club has been holding blood drives at The Factory Ministries for the last year, but attendance at recent events has been sparse.

“I may have saved your life today.”

The next blood drive, which the Lions Club holds in partnership with Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health and The Factory Ministries, will be held at The Factory, 3293 E. Lincoln Highway, Paradise, on Tuesday, April 30. Donors may give blood in Room 103 from 2 to 7 p.m. that day.

“You don’t realize how urgent it is when the situation arises to get that blood,” said Pat Kelley,

Out for blood

the Lions Club member who coordinates the drives. “I always like to offer my blood for those emergency situations.” Kelley added that while the need for blood is currently not dire, donorship is always important. “There’s no emergency need at this point, but the blood banks are always running low, and in preparation for that big (possible) emergency, they like to keep a lot of blood on hand,” she said, adding that the public is not always aware of the need for blood at any moment. “It almost takes a catastrophe to occur for people to realize (the importance of blood donorship).”

According to Kelley, the blood donation process, which takes about an hour, begins with completing a two- to three-page questionnaire. “That takes about 15 minutes, depending on and individual’s medical situation,”

Plans are underway for the 14th annual Ladies’ Tea and Auction that will be presented by Cornerstone Reproductive Health (formerly Pregnancy Resources at Cornerstone). The fundraiser will take place on Saturday, May 4, at Linville Hill Elementary School, 295 S. Kinzer Road, Paradise.

Registration and a preview of the auction items will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the program at 10 a.m.

A highlight of the event each year is the table decorations.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, more than 15,000 Pennsylvanians are known to be homeless on any given day. Housing instability and crises can stem from a multitude of factors, affecting men, women and children across the state. In Lancaster and Chester counties, nonprofit organization

Good Samaritan Services (GSS) is working hard to combat homelessness by offering a variety of resources to individuals who are experiencing a housing crisis. One of GSS’ largest fundraisers is an annual golf outing that is made possible by a partnership with Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). The 17th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 7, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville.

A variety of sponsorship opportunities are available. “On the same day someone becomes a sponsor, a real person on the other end has a place to call home and has security for tomorrow because of them,” said Nate Hoffer, chief executive officer of GSS. “We’re so grateful for the support from EPC and its efforts to support organizations like us. It’s impressive how much dedication and time they put into this event.”

“EPC’s longstanding partnership with GSS, alongside with members from our community, has demonstrated that individuals in need can rely on their communities for support, enabling them and their families to rebuild and thrive,” noted Jocelyn Engle, EPC publisher.

On average, GSS has served 300 people per day and 72,000 meals every year since its founding in 1999. The organization, which began with a single location in Phoenixville, has since expanded to include additional facilities in Lancaster city, Coatesville and Kennett Square, along with a new office Ephrata, which was built last year. The continued expansions have allowed GSS to greatly increase the size of its staff, in addition to the number of people it is able to serve through its programs - and it couldn’t come at a better time.

“We really are serving record levels of people; we’re on pace to serve 800 women and children this year, which is a 25% increase from 2023,” Hoffer said. “Our focus is on continuing to respond to the needs of our

communities across Lancaster and Chester counties.”

The many programs offered by GSS include seasonal shelter during the cold months, emergency housing to address clients’ basic needs and transitional housing as individuals receive assistance to meet their goals. According to Hoffer, these programs are primarily sustained by funding that comes from individuals and businesses in the community. “What we do provides such a critical, basic need, but the reality is that 98% of our budget comes from the good will of the people in our communities,” said Hoffer. “It keeps our doors

open and our programs running.”

Registration for the EPC Golf Outing may be completed online before Wednesday, May 29. For more information or to register online, visit https:// epcgolfouting.com/regi ster. To learn more about GSS and its programs, visit https://goodsam services.org.

Indiantown Gap National Cemetery to expand

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Indiantown Gap National Cemetery announced it is developing additional acres to meet the growing needs of veterans and their families in southcentral Pennsylvania. Upon completion of the construction project, it is projected that the veteran community will be provided additional burial space lasting into the year 2038.

Groundbreaking for the phase five expansion of the cemetery was scheduled to take place in March. The three-year-long project will consist of the development of 27 acres for approximately 15,700 gravesites for casketed and cremated remains. These sites will include 5,330

preplaced crypts; 598 traditional casket sites; 4,020 in-ground cremation sites; and a 6,000-niche columbarium. The $38.6 million expansion will also include construction of a new honor guard building.

The 677-acre Indiantown Gap National Cemetery was established as a national cemetery in 1976 with the first burial taking place in 1982. Currently, the cemetery has 221 developed acres and is the final resting place of more than 65,000 veterans and family members.

Veterans Affairs’ National Cemetery Administration (NCA) - which provides veterans and their families with burial benefits and memorial services - led all organizations, public or private, in the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) for 2022. NCA received a score of 97, the highest score ever achieved by any organization rated by the ACSI. This was the seventh consecutive time NCA has ranked first overall in customer satisfaction.

Lancaster Mennonite golf benefit will defray costs of education

Golf is a fun game on a few different levels. But it takes on more meaning, more significance when it’s played with a purpose.

Lancaster Mennonite School’s upcoming golf event is filled with meaning. Its purpose is to help provide affordable education options to local families.

“Believe it or not, the cost of tuition is not the true cost of education,” said Aubrey Kreider, Lancaster Mennonite’s director of marketing. “We rely on support to meet the gap. We want the school to be accessible and allow families an opportunity to get a great, faith-based education. We want to prepare students to be world-changers. Some families are able to pay the full amount, but many can’t. We also want to be able to pay our teachers competitively and support extracurricular activities.”

Lancaster Mennonite’s 28th annual benefit golf outing will be conducted on Tuesday, May 14, at Meadia Heights Golf Club, 402 Golf Road, Lancaster. The event will feature a morning round that begins at 7:30 a.m. and an afternoon round that starts at 1:30 p.m., and it will include refreshments, breakfast, lunch, dinner, gifts and prizes.

“It’s an important event, but it’s really fun,” said Kreider. “It’s an opportunity for participants to be outside and do a sport they enjoy. It’s beautiful. The sun’s out. There’s lots of food involved. It’s less about being competitive and more about fun. It’s just a fun atmosphere of fellowship and being together.”

Up to 200 community members, company representatives and Lancaster Mennonite supporters are expected to participate.

Last year, the Lancaster Mennonite benefit golf outing raised $35,500 to support the school, some of which went toward providing tuition support for designated families.

“There are a lot of businesses that sponsor the event,” said Kreider. “For them, it’s a great way to get out of the office, team build and support a great cause. We have alumni who will come back, and they get to meet their

former teachers. It’s a great opportunity for different age groups to come together.”

There are currently 560 students from prekindergarten through grade 12 enrolled at Lancaster Mennonite School, and about 32% receive tuition assistance. This year’s cost of tuition for Lancaster Mennonite High School students was $11,870.

The benefit golf outing is one of four fundraising events that Lancaster Mennonite conducts each year.

“They’re all really important,” said Kreider. “With the golf tournament, there are more businesses involved. It’s one of our best opportunities to partner with sponsors. It’s a great opportunity for mentoring, building community and building connections.”

Located at 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, Lancaster Mennonite is a Christian-based, private school that emphasizes faith, education and community. In 1996, supporters saw golf as a good vehicle to raise funds and raise awareness for the school.

“At the beginning, they would golf and come back to the school and have a picnic,” said Kreider.

“It was probably a little more grassroots then. It was volunteers who were running the event, and now our team is doing it.

If people want to make a positive impact in the lives of kids, our future generations and leaders, this is a tangible way to do it.”

For additional information about the Lancaster Mennonite benefit golf outing or to register, go to www.lancastermennonite .org/events/golf-2024.

The deadline for entries is Monday, April 29.

ladies decorate their tables on the Friday evening before the tea. Themes last year included lemon-themed tables, a bird-themed table and a Christmas table featuring the hostess’s nutcracker collection.

“One lady got custom cookies to give to her guests as a gift that matched her table. It’s very fancy,” said Jennie Straub, Cornerstone’s executive director, noting that a hat contest will also take place.

A panel of volunteers will judge the tables and the hat contest to determine the winners. “(They will judge) the theme of the table, the elegance of the table and the originality,” explained Straub. “(For the hat contest), winners will be the hat that matches the theme, the prettiest hat and the most original hat.” Menu items, which will be prepared by Hillary Prickett from The Salted Apron, will include veggies and cream cheese on a flatbread, yogurt parfait, chicken salad on a croissant, veggie wraps, pinwheels with pesto, tea sandwiches and scones with lemon curd and jelly. Desserts will be mini apple rose pies, lemon mascarpone tarts and blackberry cupcakes.

Additionally, the tea will feature a live auction,

“Cornerstone is a nonprofit medical clinic for women or men who are experiencing an unintended pregnancy. We changed the name officially last summer,” Straub explained. “We changed to reproductive health because we are offering more services now. We do STI and STD testing that is free. We felt that reproductive health was more up-todate and encompassing all the services we provide, not just pregnancy services.”

Cornerstone also has a new mobile medical unit that is ready to provide services. “Our plan is to have the unit go out two to three days a week and on the other days have it here at the clinic available for appointments,” Straub noted.

For more information, to host a table or to purchase tickets for the upcoming tea, visit www.pacorner stone.org, choose “About” and then select “Events.” The tea is open to women age 18 and older. Tickets purchased before Thursday, April 25, will be discounted. Tickets will also be available at the door.

GiGi’s Playhouse announces grand reopening

GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster will host the grand reopening of its new and expanded location on Saturday, April 27. The new space is three times the size of the previous location and will be available to the more than 400 families served by GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster. The new space is located at 2501 Oregon Pike, Suite 101, across from the organization’s previous building.

The free, family-friendly reopening event will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3 p.m. The event will include tours of the Playhouse, food, and face painting. It is an opportunity for families and supporters to connect and for individuals with Down syndrome to be celebrated and accepted. Community members are welcome to stop by for a tour and to get to know the GiGi’s Playhouse participants and families.

GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster has the mission to change the way the world views Down syndrome, and this is done through delivery of free, educational, therapeutic-based, and career development programs for individuals living with Down syndrome and their families.

GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster initially opened in 2020, serving 100 families in a 2,500-square-foot facility.

GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster celebrated its four-year anniversary on Jan. 11. Early last year, it launched a capital campaign called Believe in Our Build to fund a move to a larger location to serve the growing number of families seeking services. The Believe in Our Build campaign raised more than $250,000 from a variety of local businesses, grants from foundations, and individual donors. Many in-kind donations were made to supply materials for the renovations, furnishings, and equipment.

The Playhouse provides more than 500 hours of programming each month, including 1:1 literacy and math tutoring, GiGiFIT Fitness, Teen Tastic, Fantastic Friends for adults, GiGi’s Kitchen Adult, Destination Discovery for children, and LMNOP for infants and toddlers. Programming will begin in the new Playhouse on Monday, April 29.

The Lancaster location was the 48th GiGi’s Playhouse to open out of 59 total Playhouses within the U.S. and Mexico. For more information or to donate or volunteer, email lancaster@gigis playhouse.org.

Still barkin’ for life

In 2023, Sharon Groff, a member of the Misfits on a Mission Relay For Life team, coordinated a Bark For Life event in Ephrata. The fundraiser was so successful that Groff and her helpers are working to hold the second Ephrata-area Bark For Life, at New Life Fellowship, 420 E. Fulton St., Ephrata, on Saturday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free, dog-friendly event will be presented by Blue Ridge Communications and WIOV-FM.

Attending dogs will take center stage if they participate in the Strut Your Mutt parade scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Dogs need not dress up to take part. Registration for the parade will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Working dogs that help humans will be featured at the event. Officer Bill Watt of the East Hempfield Township Police Department and his K-9, Tundra, will demonstrate article search and obedience at 10:30 a.m. Pennsylvania Canine Search and Rescue (PACSAR) will give a demonstration at

noon. PACSAR’s highly trained and certified volunteers provide free search and rescue services using canines.

At 11 a.m., the fun for pups will continue with doggie activities for a set donation. Bark For Life T-shirts will be included. This year, doggie art has been added to the roster, and owners of dogs that participate will take home a piece of art created by their own pup. A Western-themed photo wall will give owners a chance to have their dog photographed. Photos can be shared at the “Bark For Life Benefit Auction” Facebook page. “We will do a shell game where we will put treats under (shells) and see which one the dog’s nose touches,” shared Groff, who added that dogs will receive a treat bag to take home.

Other organizations that will have a presence at the event include Ladies Lending Paws, Charlie’s Crusaders Pet Rescue, Leo’s Helping Paws, Find Toby in PA, and McGruff the Crime Dog. Groff has also lined up about 30 vendors, mostly crafters with a few home

businesses mixed in.

Registration for a benefit auction will begin at noon. Auctioneer James Fishel will put a variety of items up for bids, including themed baskets, gift cards, tickets to area attractions, a 40-inch smart television, and a BioLite FirePit.

“There will be a bake sale with proceeds benefiting Eliannie Animal Rescue and Charlie’s Crusaders,” said Groff, who pointed out that prizes and giveaway contests will benefit animal rescues. A fill-the-truck donation drive will aid rescues by asking attendees to bring items such as blankets, towels, treats, dog food, and cat food.

First responders and apparatus will be present,

including the Ephrata Pioneer Fire Company, the Ephrata Community Ambulance Association, and the Ephrata Police Department.

Food items that will be for sale at the event include hot dogs sold by New Life Fellowship, breakfast sandwiches, grilled cheese sandwiches, fries, funnel cakes, soft pretzels, and cotton candy.

Groff noted that she is still looking for area businesses to donate items for the auction or sponsor the event. Readers who would like to donate may call 717-354-2656 or email sgroff56@gmail.com. More information about the event may be found at www.relayforlife.org/ barklancasterpa.

PASR sets Retirement Fair

The Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) will host its annual Retirement Fair on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Chiques United Methodist Church, 1215 E. Main St., Mount Joy. The event is geared for people working in public schools in Pennsylvania who would like information about retirement.

To register before Friday, April 26, call 717-928-4432.

PASR began in 1937 to support retiring school employees as they transitioned from work to retirement. The organization’s activities include assisting members with supplemental health insurance and dental and vision care insurance, providing opportunities for travel both locally and around the world, and

aiding school retirees who are unable to care for themselves completely. PASR is not a union.

Lancaster County School Retirees (LCSR), the local chapter of PASR, is one of 70 chapters across the state sharing updates for retirees, providing deals on members’ benefits, and offering social activities. Members also participate in fundraising events for schools and students and receive discounted prices at many local businesses. PASR has supported more than 3,000 members who are unable to leave their residences or who need special attention in senior living homes.

In the last 12 years, LCSR has raised more than $60,000 for scholarships for high school students across the county. In the last five

years, the organization has also raised more than $20,000 to provide grants to school employees to science lab equipment, library materials, musical instruments, physical education equipment, and more. Members volunteer at food and clothing banks, libraries, schools and hospitals, day care centers, and other locations. The organization annually recognizes outstanding school employees who were nominated by local school leaders.

PASR’s offices are located in Mechanicsburg. Beginning in May, school employees may apply for funds for unique school projects costing up to $5,000. The application is available at www.pasr.org. All funds will be awarded to winners in October.

she noted. The next step is to meet with a nurse to go over any medications the donor is taking. Kelley noted if a medication is detrimental to the blood quality, a potential donor might not be able to give. Donors must be ages 16 to 79 and must bring identification. Regular donors should know the date they last gave blood. Minors will need parental consent to give. Potential donors age 80 and over

may donate at the Blood Donor Center at Lancaster General Health.

Kelley is hoping to see more donors at the April drive, noting that a local company, Smoker Door Sales, is encouraging employees to come over to donate. “It’s like a company-wide event,” she said. For more details and to register, visit www.lghblooddonors .org/donorportal/ donate-blood.

New wellness organization formed

Staff members with several pregnancy medical clinics and resource centers in Pennsylvania recently gathered with state lawmakers to announce the Pennsylvania Pregnancy Wellness Collaborative (PPWC). The PPWC is a new organization working to unite Pennsylvanians involved with pregnancy help to advance maternal health for women and families across the commonwealth.

Pennsylvania has many pregnancy medical clinics that provide maternal and child health care and operate under the direction of a medical director and a credentialed medical staff. Additionally, pregnancy resource centers provide support services in their communities such as parenting education and material help. Members of the PPWC offer a wide range of support services that go beyond

pregnancy testing, including ultrasound, STD testing and treatment, emotional support for relationship issues and financial needs, educational and parenting classes, and material assistance, such as diapers, formula, and baby clothes. The clinics and resource centers also help to identify and address potential health issues early in pregnancy; they offer medical referrals, guidance, and screenings

with the purpose of creating better health outcomes. Services are offered free of charge or at low cost to any community member.

The mission of the Pennsylvania Pregnancy Wellness Collaborative is to provide a unified voice for pregnancy centers, educating communities and legislatures, and promoting and protecting pregnancy help statewide. For more information, visit www.papregnancy.com.
