Lancaster artist featured in Eagles’ art gala

JJ Roach of Lancaster doesn’t see the world in the same way most people do. The 20-year-old artist has a keen eye for complex patterns and intricate details, which he often quickly spots in what appear to be ordinary settings. In 2020, JJ began leaning into his unique instincts to create elaborate, large-scale drawings that spare no detail. Over the last four years, JJ has continued to hone his craft by expanding his portfolio and participating in art shows and events in Lancaster County and beyond, including

the Philadelphia Eagles Art Gala Charity Auction held in March.

“Green Is the Heart Inspired” was held from March 25 to April 15 at Arch Enemy Arts, a gallery located in Philadelphia’s historic Old City. The art gala and auction, which benefited the Eagles Autism Foundation, featured 35 pieces created by artists from the greater Philadelphia area. JJ was among three of the featured artists who have been diagnosed with autism.

JJ’s mother, Carol, first learned about the Eagles Autism Foundation in February from her other son, John. After doing some

research and making a few phone calls, Carol received a response from the foundation, which invited JJ to participate in the upcoming gala by submitting a green piece of artwork. JJ had been working on a large drawing that he hadn’t colored in yet, and he decided to apply the Eagles’ green and white color scheme to have it included. Despite the short timeframe, which necessitated several late-night drawing sessions, JJ finished his piece “Eye of the Eagle” in time for the gala.

If you are a fan of any sport, you are likely familiar with the referees who oversee the games. These black-and-whiteclad envoys of every sport’s rulebook make sure that players and coaches alike abide by the official guidelines - even if they aren’t happy about it. But referees don’t just exist to wear iconic uniforms and make tough calls; they keep competing athletes safe, and they are often former players who love the game as much as the fans sitting in the bleachers.

Steve and Wendy Hess of Strasburg are veteran referees. The husband and wife share a deep love for their respective sports; Steve frequently officiates wrestling matches, and Wendy referees field hockey games throughout the Lancaster-Lebanon area. The couple met while attending Lycoming College, where Steve competed as a wrestler and Wendy played field hockey. Steve is a Penn

Manor High School alumnus, and Wendy moved to Lancaster County with him in 1997. Wendy developed a love for officiating field hockey after her father became a referee in her home state of New Jersey, and Steve acquired experience as the head coach of Penn Manor High School’s wrestling team for 14 years. Steve also coached wrestling as a volunteer at Lampeter-Strasburg High School for six years before he became an

When the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy rolls through town on Sunday, May 12, it will honor a tradition that began 35 years ago with the wish of one child.

“It all began with Wish Kid Matt Strawser,” said Michelle Ruel, director of marketing and communications for Make-AWish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley. “Matt was fascinated with big rig trucks, so

it was no surprise he wished to ride in a big rig and talk to his sister, Heather, on the CB radio.”

Since 1990, almost 12,000 trucks have driven in the Convoy, and the event has raised more than $9.2 million, granting wishes to more than 900 children in the Susquehanna Valley.

This year’s Convoy will kick off with a carnival beginning at 9 a.m. at the Manheim

At noon, a program will honor the 35th anniversary of the Convoy before the trucks leave the lot, accompanied by more than 50 Wish Kids. Ruel anticipates more than 400 trucks participating in the Convoy this year.

“As a former wrestling coach, I thought I knew all the rules. But there are always some little details that you aren’t aware of,” Steve said. “I didn’t realize how some rules were applied when I was a coach. I became an official and I thought, ‘OK, that makes sense now.’”

“You have a very different perspective when you’re officiating versus playing or coaching,” Wendy added. “Most people out there don’t know the book of rules, regardless of the level of play.”

Those who attend the event will have the opportunity to win gift baskets, and an online auction will run through noon on May 12. A drive-through chicken barbecue organized by SEI Catering will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.,

“It’s a breathtaking sight that encapsulates the spirit of this remarkable event,” she commented.

Last year’s event raised $553,838, the second-highest total in the event’s history. Organizers have set a goal of $595,000 for this year. “Every dollar raised at this event goes toward granting the wishes of children in the Susquehanna Valley,” Ruel said. “With nearly 75% of wishes funded through this event, your participation directly impacts the lives of deserving children and families.”

Yappy Hour to benefit local rescue

Warren Jewellers, 1490 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, will hold its second annual Yappy Hour event to benefit Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue (DVGRR) on Thursday, May 9, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Located in Reinholds, DVCRR is a nonprofit organization that finds homes for many dogs, including golden retrievers. Human as well as pet representatives from the organization will be on hand at the event.

The event is BYOD (Bring Your Own Dog), and it will

feature a drawing to benefit DVGRR with the grand prize of a 14-karat gold diamond necklace. A portion of all sales during the event will be donated to DVGRR.

There will be light bites as well as refreshments, and Just 4 Paws & Hooves will offer homemade treat samples for the dogs in attendance.

As referees, Steve and Wendy are no strangers to disgruntled fans and parents of players. As school sports have continued to become more competitive, the couple has had to navigate increasingly intense athletic contests and fierce contendors.

“Things have changed tremendously as far as

competitiveness; everyone is trying to get into collegiate sports,” Wendy said. “You can have unpleasant experiences as a referee, and you have to learn to deal with that.”

Since wrestling and field hockey seasons occur at different times of the year, Steve and Wendy often attend each other’s games to offer support from the sidelines. “I sit in the stands with a field hockey rulebook and say them out loud sometimes so people know (Wendy) made the right call,” added Steve.

“I love field hockey, and I want to support the kids and the coaches. At the end of the day, we all want the same thing, and we’re all on the same team,” Wendy said. “Refereeing has been good to us. I’ve made lasting friendships with people from all over the country. It’s intimidating to get started, but it changed my life.” Referees from pg 1

Church to host cello concert on First Friday

Lancaster cellist Sara Male will be featured in a 30-minute concert on First Friday, May 3, at 8 p.m. at First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m.

The selections will include Saint-Saëns’ “The Swan,” Haydn’s “Divertimento,” and “Sicilienne” by Maria Theresia von Paradis. Male will be accompanied at the piano by Larry Hershey.

Male is the principal cellist of the York Symphony Orchestra, acting principal cellist of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO), and chair of the LSO board of directors. She regularly performs with the Reading Symphony, Kennett Symphony, and Harrisburg Symphony, and she is a member of Duo Chiaroscuro. She also collaborates in chamber-music programs with her husband, violist Peter Kenote. A private teacher, Male received the LLMEA 2022 Teacher of the Year Award. She holds degrees

opening night, which he attended with Carol. “I’ve been to art galas and fundraisers before, but never ones with NFL stars or anything.” The opening night at Arch Enemy Arts was attended by art collectors, supporters of the Eagles Autism Foundation and famous players from the Philadelphia football team. “It was beautiful, green chaos,” Carol added.

After a few bids, JJ’s piece sold for nearly $1,000. Sporting a glittering green suit and tie, JJ met other artists featured in the exhibit and a few of the Eagles players, as well as the team’s mascot, Swoop.

As a child, JJ was diagnosed with autism and ADHD, which often made it difficult for him to concentrate in class. When he was 16 years old, JJ started working on a drawing to

thank his teachers for their patience and guidance. After showing the finished piece to a friend, JJ realized he had inadvertently drawn the Fibonacci sequence, a mathematical sequence that frequently appears in nature and is associated with the golden ratio. “I mostly still rely on my instincts, mind and deeper thoughts when I’m drawing,” JJ said.

“(JJ) thinks in shapes and patterns,” Carol said. “I started to realize that’s the way his brain works.” JJ said he hopes to share his story with other people who may have autism or ADHD to let them know that anyone can excel - even if they think differently from others.

Conservation efforts recognized

The Lancaster County Conservation District recognized outstanding efforts in natural resource conservation this spring at the organization’s 71th Awards Banquet at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster.

The 2024 Outstanding Cooperator of the Year Award was presented to the Oberholtzer family farm of Clark and Marissa Oberholtzer, located in Peach Bottom. This distinction is given to a farm operation that has a well-developed working relationship with the Conservation District and partnering agencies, such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service, and has demonstrated a commitment to conserving the natural resources on its farm. In the five years since the Oberholtzers acquired the farm, Clark has implemented more than 5,100 feet of piped-outlet terraces; 2,600 feet of associated pipe work; 1,100 feet of grassed waterways;

and 9.5 acres of a riparian buffer with the USDA’s Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program, totaling 1,800 native trees and shrubs planted on the property. Clark has gone above and beyond to conserve the natural resources on his farm for generations to come.

The 2024 Soil Stewardship Award went to Lloyd King of Salisbury Township. This award is presented to a member of the agriculture community in recognition of the recipient’s commitment to conserving soil and water on his or her farm. King operates a dairy farm that he started 15 years ago, where he milks 70 cows and manages heifers and calves. He manages his herd by rotationally grazing them on 22 acres of pasture. He manages his pastures in a system that can graze all his cows while maintaining dense vegetation year-round.

The Watershed Department awarded the 2024 Watershed Project Award to Simeon Esh, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Unique Excavating, Donegal Trout Unlimited, and the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay. Each partner played a key role in a stream restoration project on the Conowingo Creek. Their collaboration throughout the project, from landowner approval to securing a grant to installing the project, helped make the restoration successful. In total, the project restored

3,000 feet of aquatic habitat and created 4.5 acres of riparian buffer.

The Erosion and Sedimentation Department presented the 2024 Building Industry Resource Conservation Award to the Walnut Street extension project and its key stakeholders, including High Associates, RETTEW, and Kinsley Construction. The recipients were recognized for their commitment to meeting the regulatory requirements of Chapter 102, demonstrating clear and consistent communi -

cation, and joining in the work of conserving the soil and water resources of Pennsylvania.

Ephrata Middle School teachers Jennifer Trout and Joshua Haupt were each honored with a Conservation Educators Award. They were recognized for their dedication to personal and professional development about environmental literacy and their creative connections to engage students in local real-world water quality topics about stormwater and watersheds.

Music scholarship winners announced

The Lancaster Music Teachers Association (LMTA) and the Wolf Museum of Music and Art have announced the 2024 winners of the second annual Dr. William A. and Frances Harkness Wolf Music Scholarships. The awards are $1,500 music camp scholarships for winners in the junior division for those in grades seven through nine and the senior division for those in grades 10 to 12, along with $8,000 scholarships for each collegiate winner. The total amount to be presented for 2024 is $31,500. The awards program

will follow a recital by the winners on Sunday, May 5, at 2 p.m. at the Lancaster Church of the Brethren,1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster. The recital is free and open to the public.

The junior winner is Ariel Hu, a Manheim Township Middle School student taught by Justin Badgerow.

The senior winners are Alliyah Beachy, a homeschooled junior taught by Cheryl Braun; William Lee, a Manheim Township High School student taught by Rosemary Blessing; Rya McKain, a Warwick High School

student taught by Laura Nguyen; and Andrew Xie, a Hempfield High School student taught by Braun.

The collegiate winners are Jaden Espenshade, a homeschooled senior taught by Braun; Stephanie Kim, a Cumberland Valley High School senior taught by professor Eun-Ae Baik-Kim; and Nora Lowther, a Manheim Township High School senior taught by Carolyn North.

40 years of Christ and community at WJTL 40 Fest

For four decades, WJTL has been a home for Christian programming, and the radio station wants to honor its legacy and longevity by giving back to the community. WJTL 40 Fest will be held on Saturday, May 18, at Cherry Crest Adventure Farm, 150 Cherry Hill Road, Ronks. The event will begin at noon and will wrap up with a headlining performance by Crowder, beginning at 8:15 p.m.

“We wanted a day to celebrate our 40th anniversary and decided a festival lineup at an outside venue would create the type of event perfect for a celebration,” said Phillip Miller, event and facilities director. “I had been talking with Cherry Crest Adventure Farm since 2022 about using their facility for an outside concert, and we thought our 40th anniversary would be the perfect time to bring a great lineup of music to the property.”

The lineup for the festival includes Behold the Beloved, which will perform at 3 p.m.; Leanna Crawford, who will entertain at 4 p.m.; Rhett Walker, who will hit the stage at 5 p.m.; Cochren & Co, which will perform at 6 p.m.; Danny Gokey, who will play at 7 p.m.; and Crowder, who will close out the evening.

“40 Fest will be a day of family fun and great music focused on celebrating 40 years of living out our slogan, ‘Christ. Community. Music.’ Cherry Crest Adventure Farm will have their spring attractions open,” Miller shared. “We’re planning an event that everyone can enjoy, whether you’ve listened to WJTL since 1984 or 2024. 40 Fest will provide a fun day for all.”

WJTL’s story began in 1984, when the station was housed in a renovated chicken house across from Lancaster Bible College, recalled president Fred McNaughton.

“During this time, WJTL

expanded its reach, going 24 hours and beginning to broadcast in stereo, while also engaging with the community through various events, including a popular weekly roller skate to contemporary Christian music,” he said.

By the mid-1990s, WJTL had moved to a new location on Oregon Pike.

“WJTL also began inviting local organizations to the morning show to share their stories and promote their events,” McNaughton said.

In 2011, the station relocated to its current home at The Junction Center in Manheim. “The move to The Junction Center not only allowed WJTL to continue its community-focused approach, but it also provided a space to invite and host listeners and other community groups in new and engaging ways,” he said.

Through the years and all the changes, one thing is unchanged, he noted.

“WJTL’s core mission has remained steadfast: to play great Christian music that inspires and challenges its listeners, to serve its community with all its heart and to honor the Lord Jesus Christ in all it does,” he said.

As for the next 40 years, listeners can expect to continue to hear the live

voices of friends in the community, said Stacey Gagne, vice president of operations.

“We want everyone who listens to be encouraged, to find hope, and we believe all of those things are found in Jesus,” she stated. “In the next 40 years, we will continue to find new ways to connect with you and provide you with the great content that you expect from WJTL.”

Promise Players post fundraiser dinner theater

The Promise Players will present a dinner theater production, “The Case of the Duplicate Date Nut Loaf,” on Friday, May 17, at 6 p.m. and on Saturday, May 18, at noon and 6 p.m. All performances will be held at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster.

In the show, Inspector Casey Solved is called to a local church’s bake sale and bazaar. As usual, Lillian “Lil” O’Laydee has baked her famous date nut loaf using her family’s secret recipe. However, someone else has also baked a date nut loaf and put it on the bake sale table beside Lil’s. The inspector will investigate whether Lil’s recipe was stolen, and the audience will vote

on which character they believe is the culprit.

The event is a fundraiser for The Promise Players’ tech fund, and tickets must be reserved at http:// promiseplayers.org.

The Promise Players has raised more than $275,000 for local charities over the past 28 years. Now some of the organization’s sound and tech equipment must be replaced. The Promise Players prefers to send all money raised from its shows to the named beneficiary, so it hopes that the dinner theater will raise $30,000 for the new equipment.

The Promise Players’ mission is to provide Christ-centered entertainment for the public and financial gifts to nonprofit organizations in the community.

Lausch to lead COBYS

COBYS Family Services has appointed J. Michael Lausch as its new executive director, effective March 4. COBYS is a nonprofit organization focused on providing for the physical safety of children, as well as the mental and emotional well-being of the children, adults, and families it serves throughout Lancaster County and the surrounding region.

Lausch comes to COBYS with decades of experience in education, including teaching elementary school in the Manheim Central School District, serving as an elementary school principal in the Lower Dauphin School District, and most recently, serving as assistant superintendent and superintendent in the Donegal School District for nine and a half years.

Lausch replaced Mark Cunningham, who retired

from COBYS in December 2023 after leading COBYS as executive director for the last 14 years of his 26-year tenure. Under his leadership, COBYS expanded its family life education programs and trauma-informed counseling to provide wraparound services for those served by its foster care and adoption programs as well as the greater community. Application available for PA Student Teacher Support Program

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) has announced that the student application for the new PA Student Teacher Support Program is now available on www.pheaa. org/StudentTeacher.

The PA Student Teacher Support Program is designed to address the financial strain caused by student teaching requirements, incentivize completion at local education agencies and non-public schools that struggle to attract educators, reduce teacher shortages in Penn-

sylvania, and incentivize cooperating teacher participation. Student teachers may face financial challenges, as they often forgo income while incurring additional expenses such as transportation and professional attire.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro signed into law Act 33 of 2023, establishing the $10 million PA Student Teacher Support Program, which provides $10,000 to eligible student teachers. There is an option to receive an additional $5,000 for student teachers in highneed areas. The program

also provides up to $2,500 to cooperating teachers who will be working with and mentoring student teachers throughout the student teacher experience. Program recipients must commit to teaching in Pennsylvania for three years following the completion of their teaching certification.

Artists may apply for mural project

The City of Lancaster Office of Public Art, in collaboration with the Bench Mark Program, SoWe, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and South Central PaARTners at Millersville University, has issued a request for qualifications for a mural project at the Bench Mark Program building, 102 S. Prince St.

The selected artist will

have the opportunity to engage in a 20-day residency sponsored by South Central PaARTners. This residency will include mural development, painting, and interactive sessions with students from the Bench Mark Program.

Artists interested in this opportunity are invited to submit their qualifications by Monday, May 6. Finalists will be selected and notified by Friday, May 17. The selected artist will be notified by Friday, May 31.

Even as her husband is dying, she conceals nonresistant Brethren and Mennonites in a secret cellar beneath her bedroom floor. She does so while managing a farm, raising five children, and serving as a postmaster.

The event at Mennonite Life will highlight hymns sung by nonresistant Mennonite and Brethren refugees fleeing participation in the war. The hymns include songs from “Harmonia Sacra” by Joseph Funk, a member of Peggy’s community.

Fighter pilot to speak at Manufacturers’ Association event

The Manufacturers’ Association will hold its 118th annual event on Wednesday, May 22, in the Waldner Performing Arts Center at York College, 441 Country Club Road, York.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Carey Lohrenz, an author and retired U.S. Navy lieutenant who is known as the first female F-14 Tomcat fighter pilot. Her address is titled “Fearless Leadership: Lessons From the Flight Deck.”

An annual feature of the event is the recognition of outstanding member manufacturers, non-manufacturers, and individuals for their accomplishments and community contribu -

tions during the previous year. Nominations should be received by Friday, May 3, and should specify the nominee’s accomplishments made during the 2023 year.

The awards that will be presented at the event, honoring investment and commitment to the manufacturing community, include Manufacturer of the Year, given to a manufacturer that has demonstrated significant revenue growth, capital investment, new job creation, or job retention in the past year; Community Investor, for any organization that shows a concerted commitment to the betterment and growth of the local or regional community; and

Manufacturing Innovator, awarded to a manufacturer that has demonstrated a commitment to innovation, new product development and use of technology to improve the company’s competitiveness and growth.
