Birdsboro library holds story time program at Pottstown carousel
BY FRANCINE FULTONSince Amber Hamel’s appointment as youth coordinator at the Boone Area Library in January, she has taken the biweekly story time program on the road, hosting the event at the Birdsboro Community Memorial Center and at Main Bird Park.
Most recently, she hosted Story Time with Miss Amber at the Carousel at Pottstown, where children enjoyed stories, including “Up and Down on the Merry-Go-Round,” and a coloring activity followed by a ride on the historic indoor carousel.
Hamel provided a history of the carousel, which is the secondoldest wooden carousel in the country, and recounted interesting facts about the carousel, including the fact that the center pole and wood on the carousel came from an 1934 naval ship.
Daniel Boone Homestead to host Children’s Day
Children’s Day will be celebrated at Daniel Boone Homestead on Sunday, May 5, from noon to 4 p.m. During the event, which is being sponsored by the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates (DBHA), youngsters and their families will be able to experience Colonial life through hands-on
activities such as textile processing, candle dipping, quill pen writing, butter making and more.
Children will learn about Daniel Boone’s mother, Sarah Boone, who was well-known for making butter and cheese. They will be able to explore the spring cellar and smokehouse, where

Hamel said that she wanted to share her love of the carousel with the youngsters from Birdsboro. “We have been (volunteering) for six or seven years,” said Hamel. “It is kid-oriented. Why not bring kids here?”

The Honey Brook Food Pantry (HBFP) recently announced the results of its March Madness fundraiser, a friendly competition that pits local companies against each other to see which one can donate the most food and money to the pantry. The event coincides with the NCAA March Madness Tournament.
The Honeybrook Golf Club/
Greenside Grill was this year’s winner. It defeated Knies Insurance at the end of the competition. Other companies that were close to the win included the Wright Agency; NovaCare Rehabilitation, which won last year’s event; and Truist Bank.
Collectively, the companies donated more than $3,800 and 1,400 pounds of food. Donations will go to providing supplemental food for elementary-age students

there until 1925. In 1935, the carousel found a new home at Twin Grove Park in Pine Grove. Sometime in the early 1980s, it was dismantled, with its original animals and decorations sold at auction.
Years later, the carousel was rebuilt and restored. New animals were commissioned from Ed Roth, a master sculptor, who previously did work for Disney parks and restored the carousel figures from the Smithsonian Institute. “The same man who carved Disney’s figures carved ours,” said Deborah Byerly-McFarlin, event and marketing coordinator for the Carousel at Pottstown. “We had six local artists donate their time to paint them, and it took anywhere from 250 to 350 hours per figure.”
The carousel mechanism was updated and restored by local machinists and mechanics, and the completed carousel was placed inside a refurbished building. The Carousel at Pottstown opened to the public in December of 2016.
“It took 22 years to restore her and $1.8 million, which was all raised through private (donations),” Byerly-McFarlin explained. “Some fun facts: The reindeer antlers are real and the original dog on this carousel got the 13th-highest amount at auction, $662,000.
“There were five people who started this 27 years ago, and they still volunteer here today,” she added.

preservation, and children will have a chance to help make butter as well as tend the homestead garden.

Miss Amber’s Story Time is held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. In addition to story time, Hamel oversees Helping Hands Bingo, which is open to youngsters and senior citizens. Helping Hands Bingo takes place on Fridays from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. Also offered for youths is Lego Club on Tuesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. and Family Game Night on the third Thursdays of the month from 5 to 7 p.m.

the Bertolet Log House will be offered throughout the day. At the Bertolet Log House, children will be able to view animal furs and skins and play with Colonial toys and games.
Children will also be able to enjoy a Colonial dancing demonstration and learn a few simple steps. Throughout the afternoon, volunteers will teach children how to write with a quill pen and dip candles as they learn about handwriting, schooling and lighting in the 18th century.
Daniel’s Boone’s father was a weaver, so there will be demonstrations of textile processing in the 18th century. The Hopewell Quilters will provide a demonstration and a hands-on activity for children. Visitors can also watch spinning and wool dyeing demonstrations and try their hand at carding wool.
Another highlight of the day will be a reading and book signing for the children’s book titled “Daniel Boone’s Boyhood Adventures in Colonial Pennsylvania.” The book

was written several years ago by Amanda Bowman Machik, a museum staff member, and has recently been reprinted. The story is told from the point of view of Daniel Boone as an adult as he visits his childhood home with his own son. It includes stories of young Daniel’s adventures as a youth hunting, fishing and exploring the grounds around the homestead. The author will do a reading at 2:30 p.m. followed by a book signing.
An admission fee will be collected for Children’s Day. There will be separate prices for adults,
seniors age 65 and over and youths ages 6 to 17. Children age 5 and under and DBHA members will be admitted for free.
No pets, except for service animals, and no smoking are permitted on the grounds.

“Children from Twin Valley Elementary Center and the Honey Brook Elementary Center benefit from the program,” noted Robert Hamm, brand marketing manager for RV Industries, which also participated in the competition. “Backpacks (filled with food) are sent home with children for the
weekend. No children will have food insecurities that weekend.”
This year, 15 teams competed by donating money during the threeweek event, complete with brackets in keeping with the tournament theme. The donations were averaged by the number of employees in the company, which was used to calculate the company’s score. “Once a week, we took everyone’s donations and weighed them and we calculated their cash contribution,” Hamm explained.

Hamm noted that employees are generally enthusiastic to donate goods to the pantry. “We don’t want companies to write a check,” he stated. “What it does is give them an opportunity they might not otherwise have to give back to the community.”
“There are some companies that don’t just want to give money,” he added. “We found a lot of our employees are happy to bring in canned goods or nonperishables rather than just handing money over.”
In addition to those already mentioned, other companies that participated in the event were Berry Global, Genesis Packaging Technologies, Hollywood Casino, M&T Bank, PhytogenX, R-V Industries, September Farm, Suburban Brewery Co., Turf Teq, The Wright Agency and Zook Molasses Company/Good Food.
The HBFP, located at the Good Food Distribution Center, 5064 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook, holds two distributions each month - on the second Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and on the fourth Wednesday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. The food is distributed in a drive-through format. HBFP provides 10,000 pounds of food a month to about 250 families, with the assistance of 80 volunteers.
