While this is only the second year for the Keystone Steak Cook-off to be held in New Holland, organizer Bryant Glick is confident that the upcoming event will be successful. “The top 30 national teams will come to this,” said Glick. “The bigger players like to come because it’s a triple (competition).”

Glick also received glowing reviews for the Jackson Street location following last year’s initial event. “(Competitors) rave about the park because it is not a parking lot, but it’s flat,” he noted.

The Keystone Steak Cook-off will be held on Saturday, May 4, with events scheduled for competitors from 9 a.m. through 5:30 p.m. in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St. Proceeds from the event, which is sanctioned under the Steak Cook-off Association (SCA), will benefit the maintenance fund for the New Holland Community Butterfly Garden, which will adjoin New Holland Borough’s Groff Park arboretum on North Railroad Avenue in Earl Township.

Glick is planning for 40 teams from the East Coast and Midwest to take part in the

competition. He noted that the competitors are chasing points to aid them in the national competition. “This is three cookoffs in one event, and each cook-off awards points,” said Glick, who noted that each competitor can make up to three steaks and that they also have the option to cook ribs. “This is unique because it’s the only triple in Pennsylvania,” he added.

Cooks will first meet at 9 a.m., with the initial steaks turned in from noon to 12:30 p.m. Ribs will be turned in from 4:15 to 4:30 p.m., and awards will be given out at 5:30 p.m. Cash prizes for winners will range from $50 to $1,000. Competitors may register at www.steakcookoffs.com.

The second Kids Hot Dog Grill Master Contest will take place on May 4 from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the park. Children under age 14 may enter the contest, which will feature prizes, including gift cards. First prize will be a 30-day supply of hot dogs. “It’s a free kids’ hot dog cook-off, and it’s sponsored by John F. Martin,” said Glick. As with the Keystone Steak Cookoff, proceeds will benefit the New Holland Community Butterfly Garden. To register, contact Glick at 717-419-7184 or email keystonesteakcookoff@gmail.com.

Youngsters are invited to take part in the 10th annual Children’s Trout Derby that is set for Saturday, April 20, at Historic Poole Forge. Registration will be from 8 to 9 a.m., with fishing slated for 9 a.m. to noon. The free event will be held rain or shine. No fishing license is required, and all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Children will be divided into two age groups: ages 4 to 8 and ages 9 to 12. First-, second- and third-place

The PA Family Travel Fair has a unique way of simplifying things. The lively event focuses on recreation, on Pennsylvania, on family.

“Recreation is so important to your well-being,” said Wendy Royal, organizer of the PA Family

Travel Fair and editor of Where & When Pennsylvania. “It’s crucial to your health to check out of your job. It can just be a long weekend. But it’s time with kids too. It’s important for families to spend time together. It’s important to get away and make those memories. You only get 18 summers with your kids.”

prizes will be awarded in both groups. “(The contest will be) ‘biggest fish caught and turned in first,’” explained Dawn Ekdahl, Poole Forge executive director. “If I have two children that turn in a 14-inch fish, the one that brings it to me first to be measured will get the prize.” She added that the

winners will also receive trophies.

Food will be available for purchase during the day from Father and Son Barbecue. “They will have breakfast sandwiches, smoothies and coffee,” Ekdahl said. “They will stay throughout the afternoon with food for purchase.”

The Conestoga Creek, which runs through the park, will be stocked by members of the Beartown Sportsman Association, who will also provide assistance at the derby.

“The Beartown Sportsman Association did a stocking for trout season, and they will stock again for the trout derby,” said Ekdahl, noting that about 500 trout will be placed into the stream by club members. “We fence (the fish) in at each end of the park. That keeps the fish there. Once it is over, we pull the fences out and anyone can fish.”

Ekdahl noted that between 150 and 180 youths take part in the annual event and that nearly all are able to catch a fish. “We have a lot of kids that go home with full stringersa line you hang your fish on,” she said, adding that children may also catch and release their fish if they choose.

Additionally, the Beartown Sportsman Association will hold its own derby on Saturday, May 4, from 8 a.m. to noon and the community is invited to attend. To learn more, message the club at www.facebook .com/Beartownsportsmanassoc.

Historic Poole Forge is a 26-acre site that includes an historic ironmaster’s mansion, a children’s playground, a picnic pavilion, a ball field, a nature trail, riparian buffers, wildflower meadows and gardens and a covered bridge that crosses the Conestoga Creek. The playground is open daily from dawn to dusk, and the grounds are open for hiking, dog walking, fishing, bicycling and picnicking. Swimming or tubing in the creek is not permitted.

The site also includes a book sharing box that is maintained by the Friends of the Honey Brook Community Library.

Historic Poole Forge is located at 1940 Main St., Narvon (Churchtown), 7 miles east of New Holland and 5 miles west of Morgantown. For more information, visit www .historicpooleforge.org or www .facebook.com/pooleforge. Those with questions may email Ekdahl at hpf1940@gmail.com.

Breakfast serves Lancaster County veterans

For a group of local veterans, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Sure, the nutrition is important. But the real sustainability comes from fellowship, shared experiences and compassion.

The group goes by the name of Lancaster County Veterans Breakfast Club (LCVBC). While it’s sort of a cross between a self-help outreach program and a support group, it’s also a reminder that United States veterans have always come up with ways to get the job done.

“There’s a camaraderie with all of us,” said LCVBC founder Bill Terry. “There is a bond. We are all brothers and sisters. It’s honoring those who have gone before us. There’s an understanding that we gave to the defense of our country. It’s what all of us have in common.

Members of the Lancaster County Veterans Breakfast Club gather for fellowship, to relive past experiences and to support each other.

It might have been a higher calling because it’s not for everyone.”

LCVBC meets on the third Saturday of every month. Over the past five years, the breakfast club had met at a restaurant in Bird-in-Hand before a fire temporarily shut down the restaurant.

In the upcoming months, LCVBC has scheduled meetings at 6:45 a.m. on April 20, May 18 and

June 15 all at the former Revere Tavern, 3063 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. Many of the breakfasts are paid for by sponsors, including local businesses.

“It didn’t start out with a mission,” said Terry, a resident of East Hempfield Township and a Vietnam War-era Navy veteran. “It was just a way to get vets together. It was

PA Family Travel Fair

will be presented on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a new location, John Bonfield Elementary School, 101 N. Oak St., Lititz. The event is free to attend.

“There’s nothing else like this in the state of Pennsylvania,” said Royal. “We call it a travel fair because it’s fun and informative. I’m amazed by how little people know about things to do in Pennsylvania. I’ve had so many people say to me, ‘Why doesn’t the state do this?’ The state of Pennsylvania tourism office’s job is to bring people in. Our goal with the travel fair is to keep some of those tax

dollars here. We’re trying to get people to spend some of their money in our state.”

More than 40 exhibitors will be represented at the PA Family Travel Fair, including visitor’s bureaus, museums, state parks, amusement parks, historical sites and Keystone State destinations. The low-pressure, laid-back atmosphere is enhanced by food trucks, live shows, giveaways, face painting and balloon artists.

In addition to substantial giveaway drawings from exhibitors, Where & When Pennsylvania will be giving away a Potter-Tioga getaway for four. The grand prize includes four nights of lodging at the Penn Wells Lodge; passes to museums, attractions, and tours;

food vouchers; and more. “We cater to our exhibitors,” said Royal. “They’re handing out free information. The cool thing is you get to talk to someone. You get first-hand knowledge and advice from someone who knows. When you’re there, it’s a lot of fun because we involve the kids.”

According to Royal, Pennsylvania is a unique travel destination.

“You can’t really compare it to other states,” said Royal. “The country was born in Pennsylvania. It all started in Philadelphia, and at one point, Pittsburgh was the wild west. So much has happened here. There’s so much history, and there’s so much fun.”

The PA Family Travel Fair

was started in 2018 as a way to meet a need for affordable family vacations. Since then, the need for recreation or for family togetherness hasn’t changed. In fact, if anything, it has grown stronger.

“Way too many of us are leaving vacation days on the table at the end of the year,” said Royal. “(Family vacations are) a time when we can connect. We encourage families to spend time together and disconnect from technology. There are a lot of fun things to do with the family, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Or you can make it a history trip.”

a time to have breakfast with other veterans. Then some gentlemen began stepping up and paying for the breakfast. Now we have a jar and pass it around and collect funds for veterans’ groups. We’re still giving back to the community, even though some of us have already put our lives on the line.”

A typical LCVBC gathering could include the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer, the relaying of jokes and a guest speaker.

“There seems to be a lack of understanding toward what veterans have done,” said Terry. “If you were not in battle, it’s much easier to get acclimated back into

civilian life. If you were in battle, it is hard.”

Anywhere from 100 to 130 local veterans show up for the breakfasts. Most hail from the Vietnam War era, but the group also includes veterans of World War II, Korean War, the war in Afghanistan and other military conflicts.

“The interaction that goes on there is great,” said Terry. “There is an element of support to it.”

According to the United States Department of Defense, less than 1% of the country’s total population is currently serving in the military, and only about 10% of the total population are

veterans. Nearly 17 veterans commit suicide each day, according to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.

“Vets wear hats so we can identify each other,” said Terry. “It’s not for the civilians. It’s so we know who served. I’ll look for the hats when I’m handing out business cards for the breakfast club. The breakfast club is a way to come out and be with likeminded people. For some, it’s a way to continue to serve the community.”

Veterans are encouraged to make reservations for the breakfast by calling Mary at 717-929-0310.

Fairmount to host bluebird presentation

Dean Rust, a retired Lancaster County dentist and current president of the Bluebird Society of Pennsylvania, will give a presentation on bluebirds on Monday, April 22, at 1:30 p.m. at Fairmount in Ephrata. The event will be held in the Wheat Ridge Gathering Room at 2100 Wheat Ridge Drive on the west side of the Fairmount campus.

The bluebird is a songbird that has inspired poets, songwriters, playwrights, and movie directors. Rust’s presentation will provide information and techniques to help people increase their chances of sighting bluebirds in their backyard. Topics will include habitat selection, building and installing nest boxes, monitoring life cycles from egg laying to incubation and hatching,

planting native species, and protecting bluebirds from predators.

Bluebird nesting boxes will be available to purchase, as well as copies of a book on bluebirds that Rust wrote and published in 2016. This event is free and open to the public. No reservations are needed.
