Shelties will shine at Mayfest

This year, the annual Mayfest celebration in Maytown will go to the dogs but in a very cute way. Bonnie Frank will present two demonstrations of dog agility as part of the festivities on Saturday, May 4. The festival will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in historic Maytown; Frank’s dogs will demonstrate their skills at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Frank, a Maytown resident, has been participating in dog agility competitions with her pups since 2000. She learned about the activity after attending a trial in Reading with a friend. “I was enthralled, but I said, ‘This is cool. I’ll never be able to do that,’” she recalled with a laugh.

Fast forward two decades and Frank has not only competed; she’s succeeded. She’s been to national competitions with five different dogs, qualifying in each event.

Currently, Frank competes with 6-year-old Ginny and 2-year-old Rhys. Both dogs are Shelties.

At Mayfest, she hopes to entertain audiences as people watch the dogs in action.

“I’ll set up a very small course, and it’s just for entertainment purposes,” she said. “I’m not going to talk about how to train your dog. I’m not some big expert. It’s just fun to watch.”

Before and after Frank’s demonstrations, Mayfest will feature activities for people of all ages, said Linda Good,

vice president of the Maytown Historical Society.

“We do Mayfest every year to keep people interested and get new people interested in the history of Maytown,” she explained. “Maytown is an old town, and lots of historical events happened here. We’re trying to re-create and highlight as many as we can.”

More than 80 vendors and many food trucks will be featured at Mayfest, along with a scavenger hunt that will take participants to historic places in Maytown.

The Maytown Historical Society Museum, 4 W. High St., will host a display from local artist Delores Hackenberger. Guided bus tours of some of the town’s historic buildings and sites will be offered,

Green Nation Indoor Celebration will showcase students

Showmanship will take center stage when Donegal’s color guard hosts the Green Nation Indoor Celebration on Saturday, April 20. The event will take place at Donegal High School, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy.

Doors will open at 10 a.m., and the first performance will begin at noon.

Thirty-two units are scheduled to perform, said Amanda Hess, who is coordinating the event with Ashley Zell.

Through getaways, PA Family Travel Fair brings people together

Sometimes we try too hard. Sometimes we overthink things. Sometimes the answer is right in front of us.

The PA Family Travel Fair has a unique way of simplifying things. The lively event focuses on recreation, on Pennsylvania, on family.

“Recreation is so important to your well-being,” said Wendy

Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair and editor of Where & When Pennsylvania. “It’s crucial to your health to check out of your job. It can just be a long weekend. But it’s time with kids too. It’s important for families to spend time together. It’s important to get away and make those memories. You only get 18 summers with your kids.”

Where & When Pennsylvania, will be presented on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a new location, John Bonfield Elementary School, 101 N. Oak St., Lititz. The event is free to attend.

“There’s nothing else like this in the state of Pennsylvania,” said Royal. “We call it a travel fair because it’s fun and informative. I’m amazed by how little people know about things to do in Pennsylvania. I’ve had so many people say to me, ‘Why doesn’t the state do this?’ The state of Pennsylvania tourism office’s job is to bring people in. Our goal with the travel fair is to keep some of those tax dollars here. We’re trying to get people to spend some of their money in our state.”

More than 40 exhibitors will be represented at the PA Family Travel Fair, including visitor’s bureaus, museums, state parks, amusement parks, historical sites and Keystone State destinations. The low-pressure, laid-back atmosphere is enhanced by food trucks, live shows, giveaways, face painting and balloon artists.

In addition to substantial giveaway drawings from exhibitors, Where & When Pennsylvania will be giving away a Potter-Tioga getaway for four. The grand prize includes four nights of lodging at the Penn Wells Lodge; passes to museums, attractions, and

tours; food vouchers; and more.

“We cater to our exhibitors,” said Royal. “They’re handing out free information. The cool thing is you get to talk to someone. You get first-hand knowledge and advice from someone who knows. When you’re there, it’s a lot of fun because we involve the kids.”

According to Royal, Pennsylvania is a unique travel destination.

“You can’t really compare it to other states,” said Royal. “The country was born in Pennsylvania. It all started in Philadelphia, and at one point, Pittsburgh was the wild west. So much has happened here. There’s so much history, and there’s so much fun.”

The PA Family Travel Fair was started in 2018 as a way to meet a need for affordable family vacations. Since then, the need for recreation or for family togetherness hasn’t changed. In fact, if anything, it has grown stronger.

“Way too many of us are leaving vacation days on the table at the end of the year,” said Royal. “(Family vacations are) a time when we can connect. We encourage families to

spend time together and disconnect from technology. There are a lot of fun things to do with the family, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Or you can make it a history trip.”

teams, baton twirling and multiple levels of color guard will compete,” Hess said. “Each group will be judged on their performance, based on requirements set by the Tournament of Bands - Tournament Indoor Association.” Awards will be presented to each performing unit, she said.

Donegal’s color guard is under the instruction of Hailey Hess, a 2021 graduate of Donegal High School. Nine students are currently members of the color guard. They are seniors Makayla Brown and Sophia Watson; sophomores Reese Graham-Miller, Liam Nornhold, Hanna Olewicz, Sage Welsh, Sophia Lake and Gianna Burns; and freshman Madalynn Miller.

“These performers have competed in three contests this season, earning third place at Wilson High School, first

place at Fleetwood and third place at Conrad Weiser,” Hess stated.

On April 27, the team will perform at the Region 6 Competition held at Northern York High School prior to traveling to Wildwood, N.J., in early May for the Atlantic Coast Championships.

“Wildwood is a huge team-bonding experience,” Makayla said. “We are all together all the time, and I feel like we grow closer than we ever were before.”

At the Indoor Celebration, concessions will be available for purchase, including pulled pork barbecue, hot dogs, walking tacos, nachos, Buffalo chicken dip and soft pretzels.

The annual Arm of Hope 5K will be held on Saturday, May 4, at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy. Racers may arrive at 8:30 a.m., and the race will begin at 9 a.m.

The Arm of Hope 5K is a fundraising event that benefits Arm of Hope, a ministry that provides food, education and health care to children living in the slums of Accra, Ghana, and introduces them to the love of Jesus Christ.

Proceeds from the 5K will help to send youths to the Arm of Hope 5K summer camp, which is an opportunity that they look forward to all year but could never afford without financial assistance.

Registration for the 5K is by

donation only. There is no registration fee. Those who register by Sunday, April 21, will receive a race T-shirt. The course will be easy and mostly flat, and walkers are also welcome.

Homemade baked goods will be awarded as prizes to top finishers in all age categories.

People can register for the race at www.armofhopeinghana .org/5k.

The day will also include a chicken barbecue fundraiser. To preorder chicken, visit www .armofhopeinghana.org/bbq.

Additionally, a “kudogram” table will feature candy grams and various small gifts of encouragement for friends and family members to purchase for performers. These will include wooden roses, mini flags, stickers and key rings.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Donegal Music Association.

“Hosting an event like this takes a tribe,” Hess emphasized. “The stu-

dents and parents volunteer, donate food and drinks, create and assemble props and kudograms and spend countless hours planning and putting the show into motion.”

She noted that Donegal Music Association is grateful for community sponsors that make events like this one possible. Sponsors of the Green Nation Indoor Celebration are Dutch Country Hand-Rolled Soft Pretzels, Giant Food Stores, The Country Store, Maple Donuts, Hummer’s Meats, Townlively and The Restaurant Store.

American Legion Auxiliary posts projects, event

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809 in Maytown has a variety of projects that support veterans. Various efforts took place during Christmastime. The auxiliary made 30 Christmas bags for the veterans in Paramount and Rheems nursing and rehabilitation centers, and it sent Christmas boxes to seven local members of the military who are serving overseas. Unit 809 provided scarves and lap blankets for veterans in the Coatesville, Lebanon and Southeastern Veterans Affairs hospitals, donating a total of 21 items.

Additionally, Unit 809 has “adopted” a veteran named Carl who is a permanent patient at Coatesville Veterans Affairs Hospital. The auxiliary was notified between Thanksgiving and Christmas that this opportunity was available. For Christmas, the auxiliary gave Carl a shirt in his favorite color, blue; several pairs of socks;

and three word puzzle books. In celebration of Valentine’s Day, Carl received a blue afghan crocheted by Unit 809 new member Nila Grose and a box of chocolates. The auxiliary undertook a

similar long-term effort in the 1960s, when it aided a young boy named Chris at Scotland School for Veterans Children. Chris’ father had been killed in action during a time of war. Unit 809 purchased

GEARS plans Mother/Daughter Craft Night

Last fall, GEARS held a mother/ daughter paint night, and the event was so well received, the organization decided to host a similar event to celebrate Mother’s Day.

Mother/Daughter Craft Night will take place at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown, on Friday, May 10, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Participants will complete a guided craft, led by the staff from Twisted Easel in Elizabethtown.

“People are invited to bring in pictures and Mod Podge them onto wood blocks that will spell out the word ‘love,’” explained Erin Thomas, GEARS administrative assistant. “It will be a nice keepsake to take home with them.”

Participants will also enjoy light refreshments and will have the opportunity to pose for pictures using fun props at a photo booth.

The program is appropriate for people of all ages, Thomas said, noting that most GEARS programs are focused on school-age children, but adult children attended with their parent at the fall event, and she encourages them to do so again this time around. “All are welcome,” she said. A Mother’s Day card-making station will be set up as well, providing entertainment for little ones who might finish the main craft early.

No craft prowess is required to enjoy the event, Thomas said. “Twisted Easel does a great job of leading the program and making sure everyone’s on the same page,” she said.

She also emphasized that

although it’s called a “mother/daughter” program, people are welcome to invite any adult mother figure in their life, whether it’s an aunt, sister, grandmother or friend.

“This is a really unique way to celebrate Mother’s Day,” Thomas commented.

“It’s an activity to get you out in the community and help support a local business at the same time. It’s really a great bonding event for mothers and daughters.”

Registration for the Mother/ Daughter Craft Night will close on Friday, May 3. Admission is per couple, and there are separate fees for Elizabethtown residents and nonresidents. For more information or to register, visit www.getinto gears.org or call 717-367-0355.

clothing for Chris, sent him gifts at holidays, wrote letters to him, and visited him. One auxiliary member even went to his graduation and presented him with his class ring.

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809 will host an Antique, Art, Craft and Collectible Show on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27. Food, including breakfast, will be available beginning at 8 a.m. Tickets will be available for a chance to win a hand-crocheted American flag made by Grose. At 2 p.m., there will be a program, and state Rep. Tom Jones will dedicate special bricks. To reserve a space at the event, vendors may call 717-426-2107. The event is a fundraiser to benefit veterans.

Unit 809 is selling engraved bricks to honor military members and veterans. The bricks will be placed in Maytown Square. For more information, call the aforementioned number.

“Probably the best ice cream in the world.”

To us, the best means producing a truly authentic, premium product. We start with happy, healthy cows who live at our American Humane Certified™ dairy and focus on top-quality ingredients that result in superior taste you can savor. While you may be seeing more and more “frozen dairy desserts” on the shelf, we still offer REAL ice cream made with less air & higher milkfat for a creamy bite every time.

Try it for yourself and we think you’ll probably agree!

PASR began in 1937 to support retiring school employees as they transitioned from work to retirement. The organization’s activities include assisting members with supplemental health insurance and dental and vision care insurance, providing opportunities for travel both locally and around the world, and aiding school retirees who are unable to care for themselves completely. PASR is not a union.

Lancaster County School Retirees (LCSR), the local chapter of PASR, is one of 70 chapters across the state sharing updates for retirees, providing deals on members’ benefits, and offering social activities. Members also participate in fundraising events for schools and students and receive discounted prices at many local businesses. PASR has supported more than 3,000 members who are unable to leave their residences or who need special attention in senior living homes.

In the last 12 years, LCSR has raised more than $60,000 for scholarships for high school students across the county. In the last five years, the organization has also raised more than $20,000 to provide grants to school employees to science lab equipment, library materials, musical instruments, physical education equipment, and more. Members volunteer at food and clothing banks, libraries, schools and hospitals, day care centers, and other locations. The organization annually recognizes outstanding school employees who were nominated by local school leaders.

PASR’s offices are located in Mechanicsburg. Beginning in May, school employees may apply for funds for unique school projects costing up to $5,000. The application is available at www.pasr.org. All funds will be awarded to winners in October.
