May the 4th be with you at Star Wars Day

Have fun, you will. Win prizes, you might. Head to Wrightsville on Saturday, May 4, for Star Wars Day: May the 4th Be With You. The celebration will be held along Fourth and Hellam streets in the borough from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will feature Star Wars-themed offerings, with something for people of all ages, said Alicia Ferrari, founder of Wrightsville for All. The community group is partnering with Galactic Underworld, a Wrightsville-based hobby shop owned by Raymond Becker, to host the festivities.

“This event’s purpose is to promote Wrightsville’s small businesses,” Ferrari said. “This is a family-friendly event with a Star Wars costume contest, galaxy map contest (and) coloring

contest for the kids. Winners will receive a gift basket including gift cards to Wrightsville businesses.”

More than 20 Wrightsville establishments will participate in the event, and participants will

be encouraged to collect a stamp from each business in a passport.

Completed passports can be dropped off at any of the participating businesses to be entered to win a gift basket. A variety of local organizations will also be featured along Fourth Street

during the event. Children’s activities, including face painting and a magician, will be highlighted, and the organizers are looking for a sponsor to rent a bounce house. Wrightsville businesses will feature Star Warsthemed specials, including blue milk from the Cycle Works Coffee House and lightsaber pretzel rods from Hempzels pretzels. Sue’s Food Market will offer free hot dogs, and Rock’s CardioBox and Fitness will have a Stormtrooper training course. John Wright Restaurant is sponsoring Star Wars Day.

Becker approached Wrightsville for All with the idea for the celebration, and the organization’s leadership knew it was a perfect fit for the group’s mission.

“Wrightsville for All was formed over one year ago when I saw a need for a family-friendly,

May Day is a time-honored tradition in Columbia, and students in Columbia School District will mark the holiday with a celebration on Saturday, May 4, beginning at 7 p.m. It will be held in the gymnasium at the high school, 901 Ironville Pike. The festivities will include live

music, dancing and the presentation of the May Court.

“May Day has been celebrated for thousands of years throughout diverse cultures. It is traditionally a day to welcome the warmth and beauty of the spring season,” explained Isabella Redding, a junior at Columbia High School and one of the organizers of the celebration. “To honor the

It’s one of the biggest mysteries in Christianity: Is the Shroud of Turin the actual burial cloth of Jesus Christ? Dive into the history of the cloth during a “Shroud Talk” at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 409 Cherry St., Columbia. The program will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 2.

Shrewsbury resident and historian Bill Wingard will present the program, which will feature a full-size replica of the Shroud.

“Mr. Wingard will present the history of the Shroud of Turin and the science behind the decades-long research into this mysterious artifact,” explained Gerald Nikolaus, program coordinator for the Holy Trinity Holy Name of Jesus Society. “He will present scientifically proven facts, which lead one to a conscious acceptance that this may truly be the burial cloth of Jesus, the crucified Savior.”

The program will offer a unique opportunity for people to learn more about the Shroud.

“Many people know very little, if anything, about this ancient mysterious piece of cloth,” he shared. “They will have a ‘front-row seat,’ so to speak, to view one of the few Shroud replicas in the United States. Christians of every denomination will hear a presentation given by someone who has spent years studying the scientific data gathered by experts from around the world, as they view the replica of the 14-plus-foot burial cloth. Many will be able to envision how Jesus was carefully wrapped in this Shroud as his body awaited the Resurrection.”

People have been working to uncover the mysteries of the Shroud for centuries. The cloth holds an image only revealed by a photographic negative, but which many people believe contains evidence for the passion, death

and resurrection of Jesus.

In his extensive research of the Shroud, Wingard has been mentored by scientists and experts in the field. He has presented “Shroud Talks” to churches, schools, organizations and other groups. When members of Holy Trinity attended presentations by Wingard, they knew they wanted him to speak at the Columbia church, Nikolaus said.

“The Holy Name of Jesus Society at Holy Trinity Parish, Columbia, is motivated to bring quality Christian religious programs of great interest to all Christian denominations in the spirit of ecumenism,” he explained. “Such programs as the Shroud of Turin shine a bright light into an otherwise dark world.”

No registration is required to attend the program. A freewill offering will be received.

ancient deities of new life and flowers, Romans cut down a tree, decorated it with ribbons streaming from the top, then danced around it weaving the ribbons until the pole was covered with bright colors. The dance around the Maypole was done to rejoice in the excitement of the coming of spring.”

Traditional May Day celebrations should fall on May 5, the halfway point between the spring equinox and the summer solstice, Isabella said, but organizations across the world hold festivities close to that date.

Columbia students in grades seven through 11, including Isabella, will participate in a traditional Maypole dance at the event. Joining her in the dance will be Taylor Williams, Breanna Young, Delaney Burke, Madison Evans, Zooey Minnick, Ella McCarty, Alexis Droege, Allisa Phillips, Addison Conroy, Isabella Helton, Kendyl Stoler, Ava Broome, Haliey Rineer, Kherington Manley, Madelyn Redding, Lilee Zahm, Ella Redman, Julia Bechtold and Reese Schaeffer.

Members of the May Day court were chosen by their peers. The senior court is Andrea Agosto, Amelia Campbell, Brie Droege, Brooke Droege, Gabrielle Ferran, Alexandria Gamby, Xiomara Rodriguez and Kyra Unangst. Each girl will

be escorted by a student of her choice. The ninth-grade princess will be Samia Anderson. Levi Miller will be the crown bearer, and Ava Schreiner will be the flower girl.

Other students participating in the May Day festivities include Cassidy Redding and Anyiah Rahman Simms, who will be greeters, and pages Brady Aston, Conner Cless, Myles Gamber, Andrew Gambler, Liam O’Dell and Cole Wolf.

Alexis Phillips will perform a solo vocal number, as well as a duet with Isaiah Spencer, and Riley Schaeffer will present a baton routine. Members of Catalyst Dance Studio will entertain, and Gracelynn O’Dell will perform a dance solo.

Isabella and her committee have been busy planning the festivities for weeks, and each year, a current sophomore is selected to take over for the following year. This year’s sophomore is Ella McCarty.

Isabella hopes for a good turnout from the community to enjoy the celebration and see the students in action.

“During our May Day celebration, we pause to welcome the season of life in a beautiful and traditional manner - with the coronation of Columbia High School’s 79th queen of the May,” Isabella said. “We welcome everyone to join us.”

17th annual EPC Golf Outing to drive out homelessness

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, more than 15,000 Pennsylvanians are known to be homeless on any given day. Housing instability and crises can stem from a multitude of factors, affecting men, women and children across the state. In Lancaster and Chester counties, nonprofit organization Good Samaritan Services (GSS) is working hard to combat homelessness by offering a variety of resources to individuals who are experiencing a housing crisis.

One of GSS’ largest fundraisers is an annual golf outing that is made possible by a partnership with Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). The 17th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 7, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times will be at 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Golfers may also purchase tickets for prize drawings that will feature items donated by businesses in the local community. Food will be included in the cost of admission; breakfast for the morning group will be provided by Joe on the Go Coffee Co., and the afternoon golfers will receive a

boxed lunch from Trio Bar and Grill. Morning and afternoon golfers will be able to enjoy a meal from Peters’ BBQ when they finish their respective rounds.

A variety of sponsorship opportunities are available. “On the same day someone becomes a sponsor, a real person on the other end has a place to call home and has security for tomorrow because of them,” said Nate Hoffer, chief executive officer of GSS. “We’re so grateful for the support from EPC and its efforts to support organizations like us. It’s impressive how much dedication and time they put into this event.”

“EPC’s longstanding partnership with GSS, alongside with members from our community, has demonstrated that individuals in need can rely on their communities for support, enabling them and their families to rebuild and thrive,”

noted Jocelyn Engle, EPC publisher.

On average, GSS has served 300 people per day and 72,000 meals every year since its founding in 1999. The organization, which began with a single location in Phoenixville, has since expanded to include additional facilities in Lancaster city, Coatesville and Kennett Square, along with a new office Ephrata, which was built last year. The continued expansions have allowed GSS to greatly increase the size of its staff, in addition to the number of people it is able to serve through its programs - and it couldn’t come at a better time. “We really are serving record levels of people; we’re on pace to serve 800 women and children this year, which is a 25% increase from 2023,” Hoffer said. “Our focus is on continuing to respond to the needs of our communities across Lancaster and Chester counties.”

The many programs offered by

GSS include seasonal shelter during the cold months, emergency housing to address clients’ basic needs and transitional housing as individuals receive assistance to meet their goals. According to Hoffer, these programs are primarily sustained by funding that comes from individuals and businesses in the community. “What we do provides such a critical, basic need, but the reality is that 98% of our budget comes from the good will of the people in our communities,” said Hoffer. “It keeps our doors open and our programs running.”

Registration for the EPC Golf Outing may be completed online before Wednesday, May 29. For more information or to register online, visit https://epcgolfouting .com/register. To learn more about GSS and its programs, visit https:// goodsamservices.org.

“Smile and wave” with the Donegal Alumni Band

When Glen Leib formed the Donegal Alumni Band in 2004, he had a dream. The longtime Donegal High School band director wanted to gather 100 people to participate with the group in a Memorial Day parade.

After Leib’s death last July, members of the group are working in earnest to make his wish come true.

The Donegal Alumni Band is looking for members - and you don’t have to be a Donegal grad to join. Anyone is welcome, especially people who live in the Donegal area or are connected to Donegal alumni.

The band formed 20 years ago during the 50th anniversary of Donegal High School, said Jason Spickler, who is a member of the band steering committee.

“Before that, alumni were invited to participate with the high school band at football games and various things like that, but the Donegal Alumni Band formed to be more of a parade band for Memorial Day events and other special events,” he said.

Joining the alumni band was a no-brainer for the current members, said Sharon Boyer, who is also on the steering committee and who enjoyed playing in the band in high school.

“It was always a whole lot of fun. I loved the camaraderie with everyone,” she said, noting that Leib was a

persuasive influence. “Anything Mr. Leib wanted you to do, I would do it.”

Stan Tucker, a former drum major and current band member, agreed, adding, “Mr. Leib was one of those guys who was just energetic all the time, and his energy was contagious.”

Currently, the Donegal Alumni Band has about 50 active members. The group performs with small ensembles at events such as Winterfest in Mount Joy and has played in the Manheim Memorial Day Parade.

This year, the group will participate in the Mount Joy Memorial Day Parade on Saturday, May 25; the Marietta Memorial Day Parade in the morning on Monday, May 27; and the Maytown Memorial Day Parade in the afternoon on May 27.

The alumni band will hold a rehearsal for anyone who can attend on Thursday, May 23, but attendance is not required to participate in the parades.

671-1289

Tucker noted that the band is looking for band front members as well, and he emphasized that there is room for everyone in the band. “There are people I run into who say, ‘I can’t play anymore,’” he said. “And we say, ‘That’s OK. Just come along and walk with us. Just join us.’”

The group will also have a truck or trailer to transport people who want to participate with the band but aren’t physically able to march, and the group has instruments for players to borrow if needed.

Uniforms of hats and T-shirts are provided,

Rounding out the steering committee of the Donegal Alumni Band are Steve Hassinger, Shawn Kreiner, Jackie Wein Roberts and Debbie Painter, Leib’s daughter.

and the shirts display a message that has special meaning for the band members.

“The back of the shirt says, ‘Smile and Wave,’ and that is our theme,” Tucker explained. “It came from one of the first times we played in a parade, and to say the spectators were a little hostile is an understatement. And Glen, in his wisdom, he said, ‘You want to be courteous always. Just smile and wave.’”

For more information, including how to join the group as well as parade details, visit www .donegalalumniband .com or call Hassinger at 717-203-6463.

YCSWA seeks feedback from community Artists may apply for mural project

The City of Lancaster Office of Public Art, in collaboration with the Bench Mark Program, SoWe, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and South Central PaARTners at Millersville University, has issued a request for qualifications for a mural project at the Bench Mark Program building, 102 S. Prince St.

The selected artist will have the opportunity to engage in a 20-day residency sponsored by South Central PaARTners. This residency will include mural development, painting, and interactive sessions with students from the Bench Mark Program.

Artists interested in this opportunity are invited to submit their qualifications by Monday, May 6. Finalists will be selected and notified by Friday, May 17. The selected artist will be notified by Friday, May 31.

For further details on submission requirements and project specifications, visit www .cityoflancasterpa.gov/ bench-mark-mural-rfq.

The York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) is seeking input from the public through an online survey. The survey, which can be found at https:// talktrashtous.com/, is an effort from the YCSWA to gain knowledge about how those who live and work in York County perceive the YCSWA and what they would like to see in trash management in the future.

The 10-question survey focuses on how well
