This month, fitness freaks GYMBOX have partnered with 99 Comedy Club, merging comedy with fitness to create its “Sunday Roast” class, seeing gym goers roasted by a professional comedian as they work out. On the back of Edinburgh Fringe, the unique London gym brand has announced the nation’s first comedy filled gym class and is urging people to swap their sit-down Sunday roasts for a Sunday roast like no other. Participants will get roasted both verbally and physically for 45 minutes straight, burning calories in the most hilarious and hottest way possible. Research suggests that laughter not only increases the heart rate and calorie expenditure by up to 20%, but 15 minutes

“ Laughter is

extremely beneficial for our mental health...

George Coote MSC, Sport Scientist, said: “Laughter is extremely beneficial for our mental health as it triggers receptors in the brain which release endorphins such as dopamine and oxytocin which improve our mood. But people forget how beneficial laughing is for our physical health. Not only does laughing burn calories, but research has also shown that during intense bouts of laughter there is an increase in contraction of abdominal muscles and this can remain for as long as 45minutes.” Cranking up the heat in the studio along with the addition of the sauna suit in the “Sunday Roast” class increases the heart and breathing rates, meaning a higher calorific demand of the exercise.

of laughter alone can burn up to 40 calories. The circuit-style class combines HIIT training with continued bouts of laughter and extreme temperatures – meaning even more calories burnt. After a five-minute warm-up and ten minutes of pulse raising exercise, participants don a sauna suit for a 30-minute, extra high intensity, circuit sweat-fest. All as the class clown - resident 99 Comedy Club MC Tom Webb - cherry picks participants to roast personally (courtesy of a short questionnaire filled out ahead of the class).

Coote continued: “Not only does the Sunday Roast class result in calorie expenditure through laughter but the heat plays an important role in this roasting class. Studies consistently show that exercise in higher temperatures increase metabolic function, improving cardiovascular health, burning more calories as a result. With the sauna suit your body works hard to stabilise itself at 37 degrees Celsius. These physiological effects manifest themselves as an increase in heart rate, breathing rate and therefore a higher calorific demand of the exercise.”

comedy has had a challenging 18 months, so we are delighted to be able to partner with the iconic 99 comedy club to give our members a much-needed laugh while they get their sweat on. We’re known for having the most creative classes and throwing a comedian into the mix is certainly the most unique we’ve done to date.” Tom Webb, Resident 99 Comedy Club MC, said: “Going to the gym has always seemed overtly masochistic to me and the idea of having a professional comedian roast you as you exercise seems like a cry for help. However, it turns out that it’s bloody hilarious and a really tough class. “Each person receives a questionnaire a week ahead of the class, meaning that I can get the perfect roasting material on everyone and can make it a very personal experience for everyone in the room. “It’s great to be working with Gymbox on their Sunday Roast class, as you can imagine, the last 18 months has not been the busies for us comedians, so it’s great to get back out there doing what I love most.” The Sunday Roast class will be available in GYMBOX’S Covent Garden club every Sunday in September starting September 4, 2021.

6 REASONS WHY REST DAYS ARE IMPORTANT And how to get the best out of them Rest is often a highly underestimated aspect of a fitness regimen and it is essential for promoting performance, preventing injury and aiding recovery. Whether it’s regular gym workouts or training for a marathon, all levels of fitness can benefit from a well-planned rest program and at least one-day off from the training schedule each week. But what benefits can rest offer and what can individuals do to ensure that they make the most out of each rest period? 1. Encourages muscles to recover and strengthen Any form of exercise has the ability to create microscopic tears in muscle fibres. To counteract this, the body rebuilds the muscles stronger. However, this only happens in rest periods and it’s therefore important to ensure your body has enough rest to allow muscles to repair and strengthen. 2. Prevents injury It might not be rocket science, but it is important to remember that rest is integral to injury prevention. Not resting adequately can lead to minor injuries becoming major ones. Overdoing it can lead to muscles and joints suffering from overuse, resulting in injury.

6

3. Improves performance Adequate rest allows the body to conserve and restore energy levels. Enhanced energy levels contribute to a greater quality in each training session, helping to aid performance levels. 4. Maintains focus Although the mental health benefits of exercise are well documented and

accepted, taking a planned day or two out can assist mental clarity. The break from training helps your brain to relax and encourages focus and energy. 5. Aid a good night’s sleep When you exercise, especially when you are running, your body doesn’t know why. This can elevate levels of the stress hormone cortisol, making you feel irritable and restless. Ensuring that you rest will help to stabilise both heart rate and alertness and help you to sleep soundly. 6. Allows the immune system to work effectively When our body’s experience intense activity and training, our immune systems are working on overdrive to repair muscles and joints. Without proper periods of rest, the immune system is unable to repair properly, and this can result in both inflammation and injury. How to make the most out of your rest days 1. Refuel Give your nutrition some thought, ensure meals and snacks are planned and refuel your body with nourishing meals that will allow your body to perform efficiently. 2. Chill Out Naturally active individuals can find the concept of inactivity terrifying! Take the opportunity to let the body relax and recuperate effectively by undertaking some relaxing activities. Yoga can be a good option for those who still want to move as it can help refine useful relaxation techniques. 3. Try a supplement Nothing replaces a good well-balanced diet, but sometimes the body needs a little help. Collagen supplements are increasing in popularity and Google searches for collagen were up by 200% as consumers are turning to collagen formulations to support their bodies. Best-selling collagen brand LQ Collagen have launched two new high-strength collagen ranges in delicious new flavours to the market that are designed to support an active lifestyle.

DISCOVER THE ’P QUICK-STEP’S TO D

eceuninck-Quick-Step riders are constantly looking for ways to train better, improve and get stronger. At Quick-Step, we completely understand that drive to push boundaries. Quick-Step, long-time sponsor of one of the world’s leading cycling teams, gave the home gyms of riders such as world champion Julian Alaphilippe and Belgian climber Pieter Serry total makeovers to help them train and perform at their very best. The latter’s exclusive ‘pain cave’ boasts calming, yet playful elements, and an ultra-strong Alpha Vinyl floor.

FEEL GOOD, TRAIN BETTER We all perform better in an environment we feel good in. For cyclists, a well-equipped and beautifully designed home gym is indispensable to making the prospect of a workout more attractive. That’s where our pain caves come in. As an experienced interior brand, we decided to help the DeceuninckQuick-Step riders by turning their home gyms into stylish environments with all the necessary tools for optimal indoor training. Julian Alaphilippe: “During the season, I’m often on the road for races all over the world. But in winter, I work out at home three to four times a week to physically prepare for the upcoming season. That’s where a fully designed, comfortable home gym comes in handy. I’d already had a small fitness room in my house, but I always dreamed of a home gym where I truly feel at ease to perform at my very best. I was really impressed when I entered my pain cave for the first time. I immediately felt at home.” Pieter Serry: “Since Belgian weather is quite changeable, to say the least, I rely on my inside bike trainer throughout the entire year. Besides that, I use my home gym for power training, core stability exercises, squats and so on. In other words: my home gym is definitely one of the most important rooms in my house. That’s why it should be a room where I feel comfortable and prepared to perform. “No wonder I was super excited when I heard that Quick-Step would turn my home gym into a personalised pain cave. I was confident that their interior experts would come up with something nice, but they really exceeded my expectations. I was overwhelmed when I first saw the result. The design of the room perfectly matches my taste and personality. The big photo of me in competition is a source of inspiration and reminds me that hard work pays off.”

BOLD COLOUR PALETTE The blue tones in Alaphilippe’s pain cave immediately catch the eye. And they’re there for a reason: blue stimulates optimism and happiness, but also creates a relaxing feeling, which is important when you have an intense training session on your schedule. Blue stands for integrity, power and health – values that all symbolise the French cyclist. Alaphilippe is a big fan of vibrant autumn hues – hence the Alpha Vinyl floor – and dark colours – think earth tones, chocolate brown – even give the cool blue tones a warm appearance. This combination matches Alaphilippe’s energy and explosive style very well. Colourful gold and marble accents add a playful, luxurious touch to the room. This remarkable colour palette gives the pain cave both a bold and cosy look and feel. Exactly how you would describe Julian Alaphilippe’s personality – and an environment that reflects who you are and inspires you to perform better.

PEACEFUL ATMOSPHERE Serry’s favourite bike races are those that involve beautiful mountain scenery. That’s why we used cool mint green as the basis of the Belgian cyclist’s pain cave. Green reflects nature and has a calming yet refreshing and uplifting effect. Serry: “That sense of nature helps ease my mind so that I can fully focus on my training and unwind after an intense workout.” The Belgian climber loves his rest and peace, but never for long. His friends and teammates call him ‘the running joke’. The pain cave’s playful colours and shapes – hence the mountain contours – reflect that witty side of Serry’s personality, resulting in a peaceful atmosphere with a twist. The abundance of light opened up colour blocking opportunities by contrasting the mint green with darker green tones. The addition of wood-inspired materials – with an Alpha Vinyl floor as the piece de resistance – and earthy, white and black interior elements give the pain cave a warm and natural look and feel. “I simply adore the combination of the sleek design and rustic aspects”, Serry adds.

ALPHA VINYL: STRONG, AUTHENTIC AND SWEAT RESISTANT Julian Alaphilippe chose Alpha Vinyl Medium Planks as his flooring solution: “Since I often use weights and other equipment during my training sessions, I needed a strong, scratch-proof and impact-resistant floor. Alpha Vinyl is water resistant too, so I don’t have to worry about working up a sweat. “The warm, natural look and feel of the floor helps me relax after an intense exercise or training session. Thanks to the floor’s realistic structure, combined with the Autumn Oak Honey design, every training session feels like an outdoor ride in the woods.” Pieter Serry’s pain cave is covered with Alpha Vinyl Medium Planks (Sea breeze oak beige). The realistic vinyl planks are undistinguishable from real wood and offer a warm and soft feeling. Serry: “The pure oak look – without knots and cracks – and natural feel of the floor add to the relaxing atmosphere. “My floor doesn’t only look good, but it is extremely strong too. I used to be very careful with my weights, squat rack and other training gear. But from now, I don’t have to worry about scratches or other damage. Heavy sweating is no issue either, because Alpha Vinyl is water resistant, which makes it easy to clean. Bring on those rainy training days, I’m covered.”

Heralding back to the heyday of the 80’s & 90s supermodel era where photoshoots were shot on-location at exotic locales across the globe, the allure of the destination was often utilized to spotlight the people, clothes, and accessories. For Four Seasons Resort Maui, in a refreshingly clever reversal of roles, the models were utilized to display the beauty of the resort which shifted the perspective to the destination itself. With the goal of bringing back an essence of the 90s, Hanson was joined by hand-selected top models Elaine Irwin, Claudia Mason, Dajia Wilson, Frank can de Velde, and Christopher Gary Lawson which has resulted in a stunning new set of imagery that reimagines hotel photography and will be showcased across the hotel’s website, marketing, digital advertising, and social campaigns this fall. “Given the desire to achieve exciting new lifestyle photos for the property, we naturally sought out an architectural photographer who could shoot lifestyle. As I spent years in fashion, it dawned on me that we should be considering a fashion photographer from the days when budgets allowed for travel all over the world for editorials. These masters know how to shoot on location and capture a sense of place even though the magazine editorials were focused on the clothes and the models. Pamela was the perfect choice for this shoot given the depth and breadth of her experience,” adds Marketing and Creative Consultant, Michelle Gaillard. As a resort known for making waves and collaborating with legendary fashion houses such as Missoni (two of the property’s poolside cabanas feature Missoni furniture), and as the iconic backdrop of movies, shows, and campaigns (most recently, HBO’s limited series, The White Lotus), the decision to tap Hanson came as a natural next step for how the brand has evolved over the last decade in what is possibly the first-ever high fashion hospitality shoot of its kind. “When I was presented with the opportunity to shoot at Four Seasons Maui, I was instantly inspired by the unique personality of the resort and the many possibilities for showcasing its beauty,” notes Pamela Hanson. “Typically, in high fashion shoots, the models are the subject; however, in this case, the resort was a subject of its own. Beautiful, graceful, timeless, and forever fashionable. It was an honor to have the opportunity utilize my fashion editorial experience in a new and creative way at such an iconic property.” “It was an honor to have Pamela Hanson on property to showcase the resort that we’re all so familiar with in a whole new light,” adds General Manager Ben Shank. “After a year of change, we had the opportunity to do something different at the resort and took full advantage of the opportunity to capture Four Seasons Resort Maui in a creative way.” Photos from Hanson’s shoot will be displayed throughout Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, as well as on the hotel’s website, and across all digital channels. Holland & Barrett backs London based Floe Oral Care to tackle gum disease via salivary biomarkers Floe Oral Care, the oral healthcare business dedicated to improving oral and systemic health by means of a direct-to-consumer subscription, has secured £350k from a group of high profile investors including Holland & Barrett, Lord Mervyn Davies, Tim Farazmand, Professor John Deanfield CBE, Sir Nigel Rudd, and Julio Bruno. Existing shareholders Stephen Welton, Dr. Jose Navarro, and Charles Southey are also following on. Founded by Anglo-Spanish duo Will Welton and Javier Navarro, Floe is an online subscription service on a mission to address the UK’s ‘dental care timebomb’ by building a preventative routine for consumers and providing vital insights into undetected gum disease. Will Welton, Co-founder at Floe Oral Care said: “If your mouth is the gateway to your body, then protecting it requires not only using the right products but also visibility of what condition your gums are in. The impact of gum disease is significant, and the prevalence of periodontitis has barely changed over the last 20 years. Our mission is to build a service that both tracks and improves oral and systemic health. We want to encourage a pro-active relationship with dental care by capturing and contextualising oral health data, and are thrilled to be bringing on board a fantastic group of investors from business and healthcare as well as an excellent and highly relevant corporate partner. This is a great platform for the next stage of our development” Periodontitis is now the sixth most prevalent disease in the world, and according to research led by The Economist Intelligence Unit (IEU), costs the UK £6.4bn a year in treatment. Nearly half the adults in the UK have some form of periodontal disease, which has increasingly been shown to raise the risk of serious health conditions including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Its awareness has remained low however amongst the general public and other health professionals - it’s often referred to as a silent killer - with the study showing that three out of four adults with periodontitis do not know they have the condition at all. Tamara Rajah MBE, Chief Business & Science Officer, Holland and Barrett:

“H&B are committed to making health and wellness a way of life for everyone, and to supporting early-stage innovation in wellness as part of our strategy. Recognising that effective oral health management can disproportionately impact an individual’s overall health and wellness, coupled with our interest about the potential of diagnostics, makes Floe very exciting for us. We look forward to working with Will, Javier and the team at Floe to optimise the way we manage our oral health and improve lives.” Floe is building a data driven approach, designed to cast light on untreated periodontitis and put the right measures in place to improve it. The service will track gum health via proprietary at home saliva testing whilst delivering essential products to support your oral health. Floe launched their core dental kit in August 2020, delivering their own unique toothpaste formulations (Dusk and Dawn), an ultra-soft toothbrush, and charcoal dental floss, delivered every three months to improve preventative habits in a more sustainable way. The products are all built with the environment in mind, including a freereturns service collecting used products for specialist recycling when subscribers’ new boxes arrive.

“We now understand the big impact oral health can have on important diseases in the rest of the body. This underpins a new opportunity to benefit from a change in approach to oral health – I am excited to be joining Floe to help address this.” Professor John Deanfield CBE

error to find an emollient that works for you, there’s no magic cream that works for everyone. Notice how your skin feels after you use a product and don’t use anything new for at least six weeks as skin takes time to regenerate. “Look for products that have been specifically designed for people with sensitive skin and have been dermatologically tested. You should also be extremely careful with the products that you use on broken skin. Always seek advice from a dermatologist or doctor.” Dr Ruth Cammish, GP says: “It can be helpful to track your symptoms and look for clues of when your skin flares. Is it better when you’re not at work? Does your skin only flare in certain places like your hands? Do you notice your skin becomes red after using certain products? Both fragrance and sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) are used in numerous household products and skin care. SLS works by attracting water and breaking down oil and debris, so it is often found in cleansers, shampoos and laundry products. Those of us with a sensitive skin barrier, need those natural skin oils for hydration, so SLS containing products can lead to dryness and irritation.” How can I stop my sensitive skin from getting worse? Dr Ruth Cammish, GP says: “Triggers (causing skin sensitivity) vary from person to person and can be a challenge to identify. They may be something in the environment or things that come into contact with the skin like perfumed products. Some reactions happen straight away, but some can take a few days to cause a flare, so a symptom diary can be a great way to spot any patterns. “Common triggers that you should take into account are things like changes in temperature, hot or cold weather, pet hair, pollen, dust and dust mites, stress, food allergy or intolerances, irritants like soaps, bubble bath, shower gel, fragrance in cleaning products, airborne smells like candles and dampness at home or low humidity (dry air).”

Can eating certain foods help? Are there any foods to avoid? Louise Baker says: “Managing sensitive skin is the sum of many parts but nutrition plays a vital role in this process. Fuelling your body with the right nutrients will make a significant difference to dealing with skin issues. “Fatty fish, such as salmon and mackerel, which is high in omega three fatty acids are crucial to maintaining skin health. Omega three will keep the skin supple and help the body fight inflammation. It is also a good source of vitamin E which is an important source of antioxidants for skin. Avocado and nuts also provide healthy fats which can support healthy skin. “Other nutrients for skin health are Zinc, Vitamin A, C and E. Meat, shellfish, chickpeas, lentils, nuts and pulses, eggs and dairy are all great sources of Zinc. Whilst eating an array of fresh fruit and vegetables – especially the dark, leafy variety – will provide the vitamins and nutrients that you need. “Highly processed, salty, sugary and fatty foods don’t do our body any favours and, in turn, will exacerbate skin issues. Stick to a varied diet, with clean unprocessed ingredients and you should see a difference in your skin.”

our environment, be that temperature changes, UV light or pollution. As a barrier it keeps moisture in, controls our temperature and protects us from infection.

Camille Knowles, skincare entrepreneur and founder of The Beauty of Eczema™ says: “I’m a huge advocate of a Mediterranean diet and all of those healthy fats and vegetables really will help to nourish you from the inside out. Up the amount of green vegetables, oily fish, lean chicken, pulses and good fats that you are eating and your skin will thank you. “Reducing the amount of coffee that you drink is also a good idea – in the winter months I opt for hot water and lemon instead of caffeinated hot drinks. Cutting down on alcohol can also help. “One of the other key factors to keeping your skin looking its best is hydration. You can never underestimate the difference this will make and drinking at least 1.5 litres of water a day is something that you should build into your routine.”

“The skin barrier is made up of skin cells, lipids and fatty acids. A crucial part of this outer layer are ceramides, a lipid which acts like the cement keeping a wall from falling down. They make skin softer and form a waterproof seal, preventing water loss and dehydration. In winter, dry air, cold winds and indoor heating lead to the skin losing water to the environment. That’s why we need to work extra hard to keep our skin barrier moisturised, to counteract the effects of drier air and lower humidity.” Camille Knowles, skincare entrepreneur and founder of The Beauty of Eczema™ says: “I’m a huge believer in the healing power of the sun and like many people find that my skin improves in the summer months. There is more humidity so our skin is less dry and more sunlight brings an increase in the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D, which plays an important role in skin protection and rejuvenation.

Is Summer or Winter worse for skin flare ups and increased sensitivity?

“I believe that there are are no hard and fast rules around how your skin will respond in each season. The most important thing is to keep it moisturised and protected with an SPF all year round and never be disheartened if your symptoms worsen or you experience a flare up during the summer months.”

Dr Ruth Cammish, GP says: “The skin is our largest organ; our first line of defence against

skin sensitivity and the weather is certainly one of them. For many people the winter months can play havoc with their skin – more time spent indoors in central heated homes, harsh cold winds and lack of vitamin D can all take its toll. “The skin barrier is made up of skin cells, lipids and fatty acids. A crucial part of this outer layer are ceramides, a lipid which acts like the cement keeping a wall from falling down. They make skin softer and form a waterproof seal, preventing water loss and dehydration.” Does stress cause sensitive skin? Georgina Speake, Psychotherapist, says: “It’s no coincidence that reports of increased stress caused by the events of the past 12 months mirror increases of people suffering from sensitive skin; the role of stress should never be ignore when it comes to managing sensitive skin. “When we are stressed our body produces excess cortisol (also known as the stress hormone). It is this hormone working beneath the surface that is responsible for redness, dryness, increased sensitivity, dullness and sagging. It can also increase the production of sebum which can lead to spots and breakouts. “Taking steps to manage stress, such as meditation, exercise, time spent outdoors, self-care and a night time wind down routine, can help. It is important to acknowledge that wider factors such as stress, diet and other aspects of our outlook on life can all play their role. Therapy is a positive way to explore our triggers so as to reduce stress. It is also a resource to learn new skills enabling us to support ourselves appropriately at times of stress.” Camille Knowles, skincare entrepreneur and founder of The Beauty of Eczema™: “Having suffered from chronic

eczema since I was young, I know that there are lots of factors that can take their toll on my skin. As such, I’m a huge advocate of taking a mind, body and soul approach to managing my own skincare, and this forms the basis of my ‘HOPE principles’ – a holistic way of dealing with skin issues which I developed to share with other people who have skin conditions and concerns. Within the HOPE principals are Home, Optimism, Purpose and Pampering, Eating well, Exercise and Ecotherapy. “I find that when I am focused on all of these factors my skin is at is best. This means that I always try to exercise regularly, spend time outside appreciating

nature, take time out to pamper myself, meditate, practice daily affirmations, journal and ensure I have goals and aspirations. All of these things help me keep on top of breakouts and flare ups.” How else can I reduce the chances of my skin flaring up? Claire Lancaster from Surcare says: “Never overlook the role that dust and allergens in the home can play in aggravating sensitive skin. Our houses create the perfect conditions for dust mites and mould to thrive – a warm environment with lots of soft furnishings or fabric to breed in. These allergens can cause havoc for people with skin issues such as eczema and dermatitis and so taking steps to create an allergen free home can help to reduce flare ups. “There are lots of things that you can do. Open windows to let fresh air circulate, vacuum your house every 2-3 days to remove dust particles you can see and the dust mites that you can’t see. Wash soft furnishings like cushions and curtains every few months. Change your bed at least every couple of weeks and wash your pillows and duvets twice a year. Even soft toys can attract dust mites and can aggravate children’s sensitive skin issues so wash them at a high temperature every six months. “Mould is another irritant so take extra care to clean in all of the nooks and crannies that it can grow. Clean around window frames, the seals of your fridge and washing machine, shower curtain and any other parts of your home which are

damp and humid. Ventilation is also crucial to keeping mould at bay – cooking with an extractor fan on, not drying your clothes indoors, opening windows and making sure that your bathroom is properly ventilated will help to avoid build ups.” I’ve never suffered from sensitive skin before, why do I have it now? Dr Ruth Cammish, GP says: “Frustratingly, most of us with sensitive skin, can react to a myriad of allergens rather than having a true contact dermatitis. This is called contact irritation and is more likely when the skin is dry as it allows allergens to enter the tiny gaps between our skin cells and cause inflammation. Common culprits are essential oils, fragrance, dust, pollen, dyes, soaps and detergents. “Another common time to have sensitive skin is over 50. As we age, the ceramide ‘building blocks’ in our skin barrier decrease, leading to drier skin which is more vulnerable to irritation. For women, as the hormone oestrogen drops with the menopause, skin becomes less elastic and tends to produce less oil. It is a common time for skin to become reactive to fragrance, metal and dyes. These conditions worsen in winter as a dry skin barrier is less able to carry out its protective function and more likely to react to allergens such as perfumes, harsh detergents and dust.” What are the tell-tale signs of eczema rather than just dry skin? Camille Knowles, skincare entrepreneur and founder of The Beauty of Eczema™ says: “Whilst eczema is commonly known as a dry skin condition the symptoms are so much more than that and will often depend on the type of eczema that you have. In general, people with eczema will experience inflamed, itchy patches of skin which can appear with a red rash. Other tell-tale signs include small red bumps that can ooze fluid when scratched, thickened scaly skin, swelling and crusting. “The symptoms of eczema can be different for absolutely everybody – some people experience intense flare ups, whilst others will only experience mild to moderate symptoms, which may come and go. Breakouts can be extremely painful, especially when the itchiness gets so bad that it is scratched it until it bleeds. Known as the ‘itchscratch’ cycle, this will often make a breakout worse and could cause infection.” For more information about Surcare and additional advice on managing sensitive skin please visit www.surcare.co.uk

BOTOX VS. FACIAL TREATMENTS: WHICH IS BETTER FOR ANTIAGING? The rise in Botox and injectable treatments on the market for skin aging prevention is at an all time high. The Guardian reported that in the UK plastic surgeons saw a 70% increase in consultations with a demand for Botox in 2020. Many assume that Botox is a gold-standard treatment when it comes to protecting against and reversing signs of aging, but does Botox do more than a good skincare regime when it comes to aging prevention? Dermoi’s Chief Scientific Officer, Eve Casha, MSc Pharmaceutical Formulation has commented on the relationship between Botox and Facial treatments. Her thoughts below: “Botox procedures involve injection of a bacterial toxin, Botulinum Toxin, into the muscles of deep facial expression to cause temporary and reversible paralysis of a muscle. This

34

is to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles associated with muscle contraction. “ “However, what many don’t consider is that there are many signs of aging in the skin that muscle contractions are not the cause of. For example, as we age certain cell types in the skin decline in number and activity. In addition, it is estimated that over 80% of the aging seen on the face is from long-term exposure to UV radiation and this is what leads to majority of wrinkles, dryness, leathery texture, uneven pigmentation, and sagging appearing with age.” “Unfortunately, while there is

some recent evidence that would suggest that Botox could have a temporary skin rejuvenation activity, the scientific evidence proving this concept is not complete or consistent.” SO, WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BOTOX AND FACIAL TREATMENTS? One could argue that Botox and facial treatments complement each other when it comes to age prevention. Botox can be used to target deep wrinkles associated with facial expressions, whereas advanced facial treatments using active ingredients can be used to preserve and protect the cell types within the skin tissue from age related changes. The effects of Botox are temporary (~3-6 months), but the effects of the right facial treatments will only leave skin stronger and more protected overtime. With the skincare market being so overwhelmed with false information, we have all felt the frustration of ineffective skincare and skin reactions caused by incorrect use of potent actives. More than ever, the need for regular check-ins with a skin expert is needed. Dermoi brings this expert to your door. “You do not see someone’s Botox or filler, but you always see the quality and health of skin on top. Botox is not a replacement for adequate facial treatments and effective use of active skincare.” Eve Casha, MSc Pharmaceutical Formulation

PICK PUMPKIN FOR BETTER VISION AND EYE HEALTH Did you know Pumpkins are fantastic for eye health? These three easy pumpkin recipes are packed with essential nutrients that will help to keep vision sharp …. and that are a feast for the eyes too! We carve pumpkin so that the eyes shine bright on a Halloween evening – but did you know that pumpkins contain an array of nutrients that are essential for healthy eyes? “Eating delicious pumpkin recipes could form the first line of defence in protecting our eye health”, says Dr Andy Hepworth, leading eye expert from Essilor. co.uk. “Pumpkins are rich in zinc, vitamin C, vitamin A and E, lutein, and zeaxanthin, making them a treat for your vision and overall health. “As a carotenoid, pumpkins are especially beneficial to eyes because of the high level of beta-carotenes within it. Our eyes convert the beta-carotene into retinol, which is important for optimal eye health. The retinol is then changed into retinoic acid which is involved in growth and cell differentiation in the eyes.

50

“Add to this zinc found in pumpkin, which is also good for keeping your retina healthy; Vitamin A, which protects the cornea, the surface of the eye, and helps vision even in low light; Vitamin C to reduce the risk of age-related macular (AMD) and cataracts, and that can help protect the lens of your eye by blocking celldamaging free radicals. “Last but not least, there’s also powerful antioxidants in this superfood, lutein and zeaxanthin, which can aid in preventing eye disease. Zeaxanthin helps filter harmful high energy blue light, protecting
cells in the eyes particularly in the macular and reduces the risk of developing late AMD. “A varied and balanced diet is crucial for a healthy lifestyle but if you are looking to add more eye boosting benefits into your meals then pumpkin is a great place to start…and they’re easy to find on supermarket shelves throughout October!” Recipes by essilor.co.uk

lexitarians who occasionally swap meat meals for plant-based meat alternatives have positive changes in the microbiome that are associated with a healthy gut, a new study has found. According to the findings published in the FOODS journal1 and top researchers at London Southbank University, plant-based meat company Meatless Farm was involved in a consumer trial to examine the impact of plant-based alternatives on the gut microbiome, and positive changes were found in flexitarians who swapped just five meat meals for Meatless Farm meals a week. The study examined people aged between 18 and 55 who all ate a ‘typical’ diet, including animal-based foods and were a mix of men and women. They were randomised into a control group who ate their normal diet and an intervention group who consumed just five plant-based meat meals a week over a fourweek period. The plant-based meat meals included Meatless Farm’s burgers, sausages, mince, meatballs and sausage patties. Both groups completed a stool test to analyse their gut microbiome at the

start and end of the study. The researchers found the plant-based meat group had a greater ability to produce butyrate from the bacterial populations in their gut, which has been found to have many health benefits such as helping maintain the intestinal barrier in the colon, which is essential for the functioning of the gut and a healthy immune system. Emerging science also documents an important role of butyrate in supporting positive mental wellbeing.

A decrease in Tenericutes was also observed in the Meatless Farm group. Tenericutes are a broad group of microbes that include pathogens such as viruses as well as bacteria with parasite-like behaviour, so the reduction in this was considered a positive outcome of the study. Further gut diversity measurements were observed compared to the control group with the scientific researchers concluding that the plant-based meat diet

“Butyrate is a waxy molecule produced by some types of gut bacteria and there are emerging studies to suggest it helps to support the health of the thin barrier that separates your gut from your bloodstream, which is good for your colon, and has an ability to promote balanced blood sugar control. “There is also a reported impact of butyrate on brain health, which can influence the way we feel for the better. The science is still emerging but having a thriving community of butyrateproducing bacteria in your gut is always likely to be good news, which can be helped by eating more plant-based meat alternatives.” A flexitarian who has felt the difference since incorporating more plant-based food into his diet is the greatest sprinter in the history of Tour de France, Mark Cavendish, 36 from Douglas, Isle of Man. He is a Meatless Farm ambassador and reassessed his diet in the past year to incorporate more plant-based food, which he strongly believes helped his thrilling cycling comeback. Mark Cavendish, MBE comments: “Since I started swapping my meat meals for plant-based alternatives, I feel a lot less lethargic and better in myself both physically and mentally. You always feel tired as a professional cyclist training all the time, but my rest days now feel much more invigorated. I find it so easy to substitute meat now and plant-based alternatives offer new textures and flavours that are actually really tasty.” Angela Walker, MSc Nutritional Medicine and Nutritionist at Meatless Farm says: “The research challenges perceptions about plant-based meat being ultraprocessed. Our plant-based meat has led to positive changes in the microbiome that are aligned to a ‘healthy high nutritional value like fibre and gut’. phytonutrients and is therefore different from what is topically associated Miguel Toribio-Mateas, lead researcher, clinical neuroscientist and with ultra-processed food. The gut microbiome researcher at the Bowels and Brains Lab at London South Bank microbiome is a hot topic right now and University says: “This study is ground-breaking as it’s the first to indicate a making small changes to eat less meat direct correlation between plant-based meat alternatives and changes in and more plant-based can be both good gut bacteria associated with better gut health. for your gut and the environment.”

apart, but the country’s favourite look-alike definitely knows how to put our Vegan Bac’n Bap together. At Costa Coffee we always look to challenge our alternative food offerings to provide as much choice for our customers as possible, and this breakfast alternative is very proud to be fake.” Martin Jordan, Gordon Ramsay Look-alike, added: “My impersonation skills and experience were put to the test filming the trial of the Vegan Bac’n Bap, along with a rare chance to film as myself in my day job, which brought a fun element to the whole project! We’ll see whether Gordon agrees, as I’m no expert, but it tasted b****y good!” Costa Coffee’s new Vegan Bac’n Bap is now available in stores nationwide.
