who lead the way in research and development have pioneered the latest technology for the building industry over the last 18 years.. The first to introduce a hybrid sealant almost 18 years ago, pioneered the way forward with a new era of sealants. CT1 showed the industry that you only need one tube for most applications with the correct raw materials and formulation. This new technology presented itself in a tube CT1. CT1 created a formulation with no solvents, allowing CT1 to perform under any diff icult conditions, even under water. CT1 can guarantee that it will never shrink or crack, so it will not lose its bonding and sealing capabilities over time. Realising that hybrid formulations would be soon dated with old technology, as demands increase in what we expect from products and with the building industry producing more complex builds. CT1 was proactive rather than re-active. Introducing TRIBRID ® technology. Another new era of sealants and adhesives. Now three times stronger, longer colour retention and elongation, TRIBRID® CT1 can’t be matched or compared to again for a long time. CT1’s technical f ield team also realised that in today’s current conditions people are demanding much cleaner environments and surface areas. Using the correct sealants and adhesives in installations and repairs is key keeping a surface area healthier. BT1- The Ultimate Bathroom Sealant and Adhesive was created as most sealants over time will allow bacterial and fungal growth. Some will grow quicker than others. The bathroom can be a contaminated area, with heat, fluids and lack of UV light. BT1 based on the revolutionary TRIBRID® formulation, was created to prevent fungal and bacteria growth happening over long periods of time. developer-update.co.uk

This unique formulation makes it impossible for bacteria or microbes to form on the surface, and with almost zero indoor emissions, makes this the heathiest choice for your home. But what became apparent after vigorous testing was that using BT1 would reduce the risk of MRSA, E. Coli an d campyloba c ter. Reducing bacteria by 99.99% and being able to retain its clinically clean white appearance is now proving to be the only sealant and adhesive being used by Hospitals, Aged Care Facilities, Clinics, Schools, Universities and Public Buildings. Solihull Hospital in Birmingham and Good Hope Hospital in Sutton to name a few have used and will only use BT1. BT 1- which can also be used in kitchen installations, has exploded into all Toolstation branches

nationwide. Toolstation which has had rapid growth expansion themselves last two years, loved adding this new technology to an already impressive portfolio of leading products and brands, Since the growth and reputation of BT1 and the important role it plays in keeping a healthier environment Toolstation, w i l l n ow a l s o b e stocking BT1 nationwide. Branches and online. Go to www.CT1.com and youtu.be/kirVUrwWbaY BT 1 will also be showcased at the upcoming KBB show, March 6th -9th March. The KBB- at the NECs t a n d s fo r Ki tch e n Bedroom Bathroom. All installers, manufactures, end users will be at this show. And once again we can show the technical developments and advancements of a TRIBRID® polymer.

THE BLUEPRINT TO FUTURE BUILDING DESIGN How can good building design improve people’s well-being and benefit the planet? First and foremost, our approach to new and existing living spaces needs to change.

W

hen it comes to the built environment, we’re seeing a greater push for the consideration of both people and planet – however, the building industry experiences multiple challenges in trying to address them. So how can we live in a more sustainable, connected and healthy manner? This is one of several fundamental questions addressed in the Build for Life concept, developed by VELUX – a concept that is rooted in a strong commitment to show how it is possible to build sustainably and enable happier and healthier living places.

developer-update.co.uk

Taking its +18 years of best prac tices in sustainable buildings to a new level, the VELUX Group’s sustainable buildings and communities platform Build for Life addresses these challenges and acknowledges that the way we build today has an enormous impact on people, as well as the ecosystems that sustain us. The concept provides a compass for designers, city planners and building professionals – acting as a blueprint – along with suggestions for ways to address some of the most pressing social dilemmas we face, such as health, affordability and community.

Health We spend up to 90% of our time indoors but fail to create a healthy indoor climate, due to the application of a one -size -f its-all approach in our building designs and compromising on the quality of construction materials. By designing buildings using healthy indoor principles and materials, we can create buildings that don’t just make you less sick but also improve your health. Our commitment to the highest-quality materials also means our products last for generations – which leads to less consumption.

05 Affordability An additional 2.5 billion people are expected to live in cities by 2050. At the same time, most cities across the globe have seen a substantial and steady increase in housing prices, making our built environment unaffordable for the people who would benefit from them the most. By designing a built environment that focuses on affordability through design, shared living, and new business cases we could unlock housing for the people that will benefit from it the most.

Community The social dimensions are a huge component of the Build for Life concept, as despite living closer together and being more connected than ever, people feel more lonely, anxious and stressed than ever before. By designing a built environment that encourages a community to develop, through sharing, participation, identity and safety, we could increase wellbeing and improve overall health whilst reducing anxiety, loneliness and stress. The Build for Life concept is outlined in a Compass Model, detailing seven strategic drivers – flexibility, quality, environment, health, community, local, affordability – to guide the building and development process. These drivers enable collaborators across sectors to follow an easy, open-source framework for developing and transforming buildings for the future; it is only by working together across the industry that we’ll be able to achieve healthier and more sustainable living places for all. “Homes and communities should be centred around healthy and regenerative design principles to be designed for both people and planet. Build for Life is more than a design concept, it is a way of thinking and living” explains Lone Feifer, Director of Sustainable Buildings, the VELUX Group.

The Compass Model had been created in partnership with EFFEKT architects, MOE engineers, LeaderLab and the VELUX Group. The Compass is intended as a partnership platform and invites more partners with like-minded visions to lead the change within the built environment. At VELUX, we started our journey with sustainable living in buildings in 1999 and since then have founded a global alliance, partnered in demonstration projects around the world and driven research that puts the spotlight on the need for building renovation solutions to address societal and environmental issues.

Environment Every action we take comes back to our pledge to become Lifetime Carbon Neutral by 2041, and our products are designed with health and well-being in mind, something that is more relevant than ever in the light of the pandemic and in our support of the UN’s 2030 third SDG ‘good health and well-being’ in buildings. The VELUX Group has set s c i e n ce - b a s e d t a rg e t s to contribute to limiting global temperature increases to 1.50c and avoid the worst impacts of

climate change. This includes a commitment to reduce emissions f rom the Group’s own operations to zero (scope 1 and 2) and halve value chain emissions by 2030. The VELUX Group has also committed to go above and beyond its value chain, and capture its historical carbon footprint since the business was founded in 1941 (approx. 5.6 million tons of CO2, including a 25% buffer) in 5 climate and biodiversity projects around the world. We seek to inspire not only our customers but also the entire building industry to create buildings with good indoor climates, eff icient energy consumption and a minimal environmental impact.

We’ve set the standard everyone else follows Once in a while a product comes along and changes everything, from the way it’s crafted to the way it works. Products are often copied and many are great ideas that never really see true success in their application. Many years are spent searching for a product that will ultimately surpass expectations, stand the test of time and become recognised as the leader in its field. We created one of those successful products nearly two decades ago and still today it has never been equalled. Why? Because we have never compromised on quality.

W

hile we’ve all b e e n s t ay i n g at home that little bit more than we may have liked, many homeowners have been undertaking a vast amount of home improvement too, with the bathroom being one of the main areas of investment. In fact, research by insurance company confused.com found that Brits spent £34,000 renovating their homes, on average, during lockdown, with 94% of them choosing to upgrade their bathroom. The world looks a little different once again as we traverse 2022, but the investment in our homes looks set to continue and there are several stand-out trends that are coming through in terms of bathroom design.

Hygiene first As we continue to live with the pandemic in 2022, the heightened awareness of good hygiene means that ease of cleaning and anti-bacterial surfaces have really come to the fore. Touchless flushing on WCS like RAK-Sensation, for instance, encourages users to flush in a hygienic way, while the absence of awkward levers or buttons to press makes the bathroom that little bit more accessible to all too, something that is important in multigenerational households or when consumers are hoping to future-proof their current space. In terms of ease of cleaning, rimless WCs are a dream, while anti-bacterial coatings raise the stakes even further in terms of hygiene in the bathroom, acting as an invisible barrier to harmful germs and bacteria. Special glazes, such as RAK-Sanit, applied during manufacture see these off, with no need for lots of chemicals and copious amounts of cleaning products. A regular wipe down with a soft damp cloth is all that is required, likely to be music to the ears of busy families. developer-update.co.uk

RAISING THE BAR ON LUXURY BATHROOM DESIGN WITH RAK CERAMICS Now more than ever the bathroom is a place of sanctuary, relaxation and comfort. What are they key trends that help create such a space? Ben Bryden, Sales and Marketing Director of RAK Ceramics, looks at the materials, colours and finishes that are coming through to will help architects and installers create bathrooms that meet up to their customers’ high expectations. RAK-Petit solves the problem of creating luxury results in compact spaces, with deep-based washbasins that can be installed alone or combined with RAK-Joy vanity units.

09 Bathroom style trends From a style viewpoint too, for a long time, the focus for sanitaryware in the bathroom has been starkly white, but things are changing, with soft pastels and muted shades increasingly being seen on sanitaryware. Less clinical than an all-white bathroom, these

pops of colour can be scaled up or down to meet individual tastes. Colour doesn’t need to mean bold and bright and in this instance the trend takes a far subtler approach, with nature-inspired tones, such as those found in the RAK-Feeling collection, adding character while creating a relaxed and tranquil vibe.

Shower power Creating a spa-like feel in the domestic bathroom has become increasingly important to consumers, particularly in the en-suite bathroom which often has a grown-up vibe. This is made possible with the inclusion of a contemporary, walk-in, wet-room style shower area. Shower trays with a very low profile create a feeling of space in the bathroom as the floor area is opened out and access much easier. For baths, think painted exteriors, freestanding tubs offset from other fixtures to make a statement and baths with slim rims.

Compact bathroom solutions

A countertop washbasin in an on-trend colour, such as the RAKFeeling bowl in Cappuccino will make a statement regardless of how much floor space there is to play with.

Not every bathroom will be blessed with a huge amount of space, but small doesn’t have to mean boring in any sense of the word, with sanitaryware and furniture designed specifically for small spaces being key here – reduced projection, slim profiles and plenty of storage are in order. All of these qualities can be found with RAK-Petit, a collection from RAK Ceramics that is designed specifically with small bathrooms in mind. For bathroom surfaces, porcelain and ceramic tiles have never been so popular and their practical advantages alone make them so. Hardwearing and easy to clean, porcelain and ceramics tiles can be chosen to emulate the natural beauty of materials like marble, raising the stakes in terms of luxury in the modern bathroom too. Large format tiles or mega slabs minimise grout lines and create a seamless f inish over large areas such as bathroom walls too. All of these trends together help create a luxurious and practical bathroom that consumers will feel quite at home in.

2022 SMART HOME DESIGN TRENDS FROM GIRA Gira, global leader and supplier of intelligent system solutions for the connected home and building, unveils the latest automated systems and technologies to enhance your home in 2022… “The last two years have seen us all spend more time at home and so it’s no surprise that we want to make our personal interior spaces as comfortable and versatile as possible. This is where the “connected home” has come to the fore, equipping the modern home with smart functions and devices that are specifically designed to improve daily life and contribute to a more efficient household” says Jacob de Muijnck, Managing Director at Gira UK Ltd. In fact, UK consumers are now very familiar with smart TVs, fitness trackers, voice-activated assistants and 24/7 access to all kinds of media, and this has become part of everyday life as the features and benefits appeal to multiple generations. The global health crisis and inevitable after effects have only highlighted that we need reliable systems in order to stay in touch with the outside world anytime, anywhere. With this in mind Gira present four key smart home trends that are set to redefine the idea of a ‘connected home’ next year and beyond: 1.

The home office that thinks for itself

Fewer people leave their house to go work in 2020 and the concept of working from home has become increasingly mainstream, but digital tools and services alone are not enough to maintain a high level of productivity. A home office requires a healthy, well considered environment that keeps you focused and motivated and so premium developer-update.co.uk

manufacturers are creating innovative solutions for the connected home office. Innovations include clever chairs and desks reminding you to stand up, multifunctional charging stations for mobile devices and smart lighting and blind systems that adjust room brightness according to the time of day or work discipline under way.

2. Smart appliances for easy living From stoves that won’t let anything burn to bathrooms that know how you like to shower in the morning – intelligent technologies make life safer, easier and more energy-efficient. Automated vacuum cleaners, washing machines, and dryers are only the first steps towards a

15 connected home in 2022, with indoor greenhouses becoming increasingly popular as we bring the outdoors in. More and more, smart devices are compatible with IFTTT (“If this then that”) technology, which makes it easy to configure individual systems where products from different manufacturers need to work in sync. For example, you can switch off multiple electric appliances with just one command before stepping outside – to save energy and prevent accidental short circuits. 3. Connected Smart Home concepts are in demand Single, standalone applications are giving way to sustainable all-inclusive solutions as architects and builders consider the digital infrastructure and connectivity of living spaces early on in the planning phase. Lights, blinds, heating, entertainment systems, security systems, home gyms and electronics, along with smart tools and appliances, can be controlled via one central unit in connected homes adding luxury and touch of design exclusivity. Connected living is easy to facilitate whether you want to build a new house, renovate your existing, or just rent an apartment. Wireless systems such as Gira eNet SMART HOME communicate via radio transmitter – which means they can be retrofitted in both old and new buildings. Thanks to a synchronised interplay of all components, your Smart Home will do

exactly what you need at any given time. Smart sensors, for example, react automatically to external factors such as ambient brightness, temperature, or humidity levels. Jacob adds “Many digital services and applications are already indispensable to modern lives like Alexa light control via voice command to blinds that go up automatically at sunrise. Smart technology will become even more universal in the years to come so be future-ready with a connected house (or apartment). Once you’ve installed your system, you can add all sorts of functions and devices whenever you want so your home can evolve with your lifestyle.”

Since March 2015, the Gira interactive online magazine G-Pulse has been providing regular, up-to-the-minute information on interesting developments in multiple areas: smart home technology, interior design, lifestyle, trends and architecture. The online magazine is your source for interior design and lifestyle inspiration and your platform for exchanging views on your favourite topics with other design enthusiasts. 15 authors keep you informed, up-to-date and are especially keen on visiting key industry events, so you will always be informed about the latest interior and smart home trends. We would like to firstly wish all of our customers a very merry Christmas and all the very best for 2022! We would further like to thank them all for their continued business and support in 2021. As we look back on our second year of trading since the pandemic and the challenges that continue to face us, we would like to take this opportunity to reiterate our policy of stockholding and how it is driving our company forward. ‘Last summer we saw widespread disruption to supply and many assumed by now these issues would have ironed themselves out. In fact they have worsened. Most of our competitors are still looking at long lead times. We are able to maintain the chain of supply due to our longstanding policy of stockholding which has provided further financial stability to ourselves but as importantly to our customers”

“On a practical note our customers don’t want to go to the expense and disruption of fitting out their bathroom to 2 years down the line find that an inferior mild steel rail rusts, leaks and they then need a complete re-tile when the replacement isn’t dimensionally identical to the original”

As always the Sussex Range is manufactured from 100% stainless steel including our recently introduced Black Edition of powder coated rails.

Stainless steel is 100% recyclable, and manufactured from over 90% recyclable material. It does not rust, flake or corrode. It is the sustainable, durable choice.

“More and more people are coming round to the durability and sustainability of stainless steel, particularly after the year we have just had, we all need to be aware of our environmental and social impact”

We source our rails ethically and take our social responsibility seriously, from our sourcing, to our manufacture, to our charity initiatives. As a stable business with long term stockholding that

developer-update.co.uk

has maintained a steady supply throughout the pandemic we are able to do all of this whilst protecting our pricing structure. We offer 3 formats of rail throughout the entire range: Electric, dual fuel and central heating only and we offer both a polished and satin finish as well as the Black Edition Range. “The cornerstones of our business are quite simply quality, stock holding and ultimately customer service. The three work hand in hand” Should you require further details please visit our website www.sussexrange.co.uk or contact us on 01825 722988 and info@jiseurope.co.uk

Duravit No.1: The complete bathroom range on a budget

Living design that is ideal for any bathroom

T

he complete bathroom series Duravit No.1 impresses with its minimalistic and contemporary yet timeless looks, a compact, clear and comprehensive product range, and excellent value for money in the entry-level segment. Whether in your very first bathroom, in a rental apartment, in a hotel bathroom, or generally in the project segment: all products stemming from Duravit’s new inhouse design enhance the quality of daily life. Concentrating on what really matters, Duravit No.1 opens up a whole host of combination options, creating the perfect foundation for a range of bathroom plans and requirements.

Washbasins that simplify planning The rectangular shape of the washbasins and the narrow design of the side edge produce a large inner basin – with a generous, comfortable tap panel – that exudes elegant serenity. Bathroom

concepts in the budget price range are usually dominated by round shapes. With the new series, Duravit presents an unusual alternative in planning-friendly dimensions. Washbasins, as well as handrinse basins can optionally be combined with pedestals, semi-pedestals, or vanity units. In addition furniture and built-in washbasins are available.

Practical furniture The minimal overhang from the washbasin to the bathroom furniture underlines the clarity and modernity of the Duravit No.1 design, as does the recessed grip, which is “seamlessly” integrated into the décor fronts and is pleasant to the touch. Available in White Matt or Graphite Matt, the furniture has been designed to enable easy retrofitting at a later stage. Vanity units with a hinged door are available for the handrinse basins (450 and 500 mm), and furniture with a pull-out compartment and on request with an additional, practical internal drawer can be selected for the washbasins (550, 600, 650 and 800 mm). A semi-tall cabinet affords generous storage options. Matching mirrors and mirrored cabinets impress with longlasting and energy-saving LED lighting and clever details. All furniture is supplied preassembled and fully adjusted, enabling quick and convenient final installation with minimal effort.

Universal faucets The stylish Duravit No.1 faucet range has a harmonious and balanced design. The handle, with its dynamic upwardfacing position, feels pleasant in the hand and underlines developer-update.co.uk

the high-quality aesthetics. The washbasin mixers impress both in terms of quality and function with their long-lasting ceramic cartridges, subtly integrated aerators, and sustainable product features: they are optionally available with FreshStart (energy-saving cold-water start) or MinusFlow (throughput limited to 3.5 l/min).

Comfortable bathtubs A further highlight in this price segment is the trapezoid built-in bathtub made from sanitary acrylic, which is available in three sizes and with the option of corner left or corner right versions. The bathtub enables a luxurious bathing experience with a comparatively low filling volume even on smaller floor plans - two people can also lie side-by-side, depending on the size of the bathtub. Rectangular built-in bathtubs in all standard sizes complete the range; the 1800 x 800 mm model is available as a two-seater. With depths of 40 or 46 cm, the bathtubs are guaranteed to be comfortable whether sitting or lying. This experience can be enhanced yet further by the optional whirl function with its beneficial massage effect. Bathtub handles, which can be ordered separately and are installed at the factory, improve safety.

DuraStyle Basic toilets, plus a wall-mounted toilet for children. Bidets and urinals complete the product range. Simple, manageable, and good: Duravit No.1 has everything that a contemporary bathroom needs, in optimum quality and at an unbeatable price. The outstanding quality is reflected in its new lifetime guarantee, which Duravit offers on all the ceramic elements in the range for selected countries.

Successful toilet standards The Duravit No.1 toilet range features the designer bathroom manufacturer’s innovative Duravit Rimless® flushing technology and the successful developer-update.co.uk

HOMEBUYERS MUST-HAVES FOR 2022 Looking for a new home can be a tricky as well as exciting time. Buyers often fall in love with pictures of a property online but upon visiting can be put off by a poor layout, an ancient heating system, single glazed windows or poor storage; to name just a few. Whether its space for playing games, a growing area for those of us with green fingers, or a patio for the BBQ, a sun trap garden is very high up on most people’s must-haves list!

Kebbell’s Sales and Marketing Director, Andrea Fawell tells us what is on the homebuyer must-have list for 2022. 1.

2.

3.

Double glazing. Whilst not a new feature on the must have list, double glazing is a very necessary one as it improves insulation and security, as well as reduces outside noise. It can be pricy to install double glazing, particularly at the moment because of current supply and demand issues. Good central heating. An effective central heating system that can be easily controlled reduces your energy bills, especially with the new price increases coming into effect. It can also lower your carbon footprint which is increasingly important to environmentally conscious buyers. Ask your estate agent how old the boiler is and look at the boiler yourself during viewings. A new or recently installed boiler is a definite plus for now, but boilers will be banned from new builds by 2025, and new boilers will no longer be for sale by 2035. Therefore, alternative heating methods, such as ground source heat pumps, will become increasingly desirable.

4.

5.

6.

Outside space. The past year of lockdowns has driven demand for both having our own attractive garden or terrace, as well as accessibility to lush scenery for walks and fresh air.

7.

developer-update.co.uk

Driveway or parking spaces. A property with its own drive or allocated street parking is necessary for anyone with a car, especially if you’re moving to a built up and busy area renowned for parking space shortages which is an ever increasing problem. Having an allocated parking space means your car is more secure, easily accessible and close to your property. Plenty of natural light. A bright, light-filled home with good additional lighting makes each room feel bigger and helps to emphasise colours, textures and accessories, as well as improve wellbeing and mood. A very dark house can feel gloomy and can be an off-putting deal breaker at a time when we all need our spirits lifted. Downstairs toilet. Having a downstairs toilet helps to keep visitors on one floor when you are entertaining, meaning you can worry less about keeping your entire home tidy for these occasions. It also makes life easier for everyone, including those who are a little bit older or have mobility issues. For some it is also very handy for potty training little ones too! Upstairs having the choice of both a bathtub and a shower is also desirable. A power shower or rain shower makes it feel luxe. Good storage options. Storage can be easily overlooked at first, but once buyers start imagining themselves in their potential new home they will start thinking about where everything is going to go. Where will they store the hoover, golf clubs, toys, games, shoes, coats, sports gear etc? It suddenly becomes a very important

factor! Incredible storage has been one of the most popular features at our Heatherfields development which now only has three homes left to snap up. 8.

Energy efficiency. An energy efficient home means cheaper home insurance, lower energy bills and increased overall comfort. UK gas prices have skyrocketed this year and prices may continue to increase, so having an energy efficient home with good insulation is paramount.

Along with these essentials, other desirable features include clean carpets, a separate utility room, work-from-home space and a property that could increase in value with updates that don’t require you to move out for. Other top tips 1.

Have a non-negotiables list. Once you know exactly what your must haves are, you will be able to condense your search making it easier to find your new home.

2.

Remember that location is everything. Location can never be changed, as opposed to things like décor and layout which can usually be altered when the time is right.

3.

Trust your gut feeling. If you fall in love with a property online but in person you notice a couple of issues with it, remember to trust your instinct. Are the issues things that you can overcome, or do you need to discount this one?

4.

Consider buying a new build property. New builds provide the perfect blank canvas for making a home your own and require minimal maintenance since structural defects and built-in appliances are usually all covered by warranties.

MODULAR CONSTRUCTION MARKET KEY SEALANT TAPE GROWTH, SAYS ISO CHEMIE The modular house construction market will help to drive window and door foam sealant tape growth in 2022, predicts Andy Swift, sales and operations manager for ISO-Chemie. He sees the UK market staying buoyant over the next 12 months as the economy continues to recover from the pandemic and building and construction activity remains busy, particular in the face of a chronic national housing shortage and the need to build more affordable housing.

the amendment to the building regulations currently coming into force are set to have an impact as energy ratings for buildings and property become stricter proposed changes to Part L 2021 lay out a government roadmap to zero carbon and future homes standard.

This will see construction projects ‘surge’ ahead with cost effective products such as foam sealant tapes, which deliver improved energy performance and efficiencies, increasingly specified for retrofit applications and new projects.

These include energy and ventilation standards for residential and non-domestic buildings that are far better for the environment and fit for the future, says Andy Swift, who adds: “Higher air and thermal standards for house construction will be a priority. This is an important message that will continued to be pushed

In the modular sector, house designers are currently looking at new ways to deliver low carbon structures, which use sustainable technologies to deliver measurable airtight, acoustic and thermal sealing benefits. 2021 has been the best ever trading year for the ISO Chemie sales are up 45% - and Andy Swift says the modular construction market will be a key target for further growth going forward over the next 12 months. “Modular construction is gaining increasing traction and next year will see continued integration of the system with the more traditional methods of building, enabling developers to bring forward housing projects more expediently,” he adds. “Our ISO BLOCO range of sealant tapes and the WINFRAMER thermal insulating and load bearing bracket support system can add real value during the initial and post construction phases, so I expect to see more interest in these and other products in 2022 and beyond.” Andy Swift also points out that developer-update.co.uk

to architects and other property specifiers over the next 12 months. With energy rated and conservation products continuing to be at the forefront of design and building regulations, there will be ‘discernible’ growth for air tightness and thermal sealing products. “There are effective products out there to ensure that airtightness and thermal efficiency within buildings should never be overlooked or ignored - it’s a matter of designing in these products,” Andy Swift says. K

nauf welcomed Lucy Hall as Sustainability Leader in September. Lucy will partner with all areas of the business from manufacturing to specification and sales to develop a robust sustainability strategy. Lucy has a wealth of experience and awards in the areas of sustainability and innovation. Her expertise will help Knauf to advance its sustainability agenda at a time when product manufacturers are shouldering increasing environmental responsibility. As part of these ongoing sustainability endeavours, Knauf is making the move to recycled plastic packaging. The Company’s new packaging will contain at least 30% recycled plastics and is often also recyclable at the end of its life so the circle can be continued. The Company has added easy to recognise logos to the packaging to identify when it has been made from recycled plastic, and if it is recyclable. Knauf will start by changing the packaging of key products within its portfolio and continue the move for other products over the coming months. The Company is using Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) plastics – materials which have been used by consumers, recycled and given a new life. Lucy gives an insight into the importance of the new packaging: “Our Product Manager, Becky Newell, has worked collaboratively and consistently to achieve Knauf ’s goal of improving the recycled content of our packaging. Realising her goal to make a difference on a bigger scale, the recycled content of plastic packaging will now also be high on the agenda of new product development. This is a fantastic achievement in Knauf’s drive to fulfil its sustainability goals.” Greenhouse gas emissions are associated with single-use plastics, and the National Geography Society estimates that more than 40% of plastic is used just once and that there are more than 5 trillion pieces of plastic in the ocean. This is a signif icant reason for Knauf adopting PCR plastics and a recognition of the Company’s commitment to Build for the World We Live In. developer-update.co.uk

Knauf puts sustainability top of the agenda Knauf UK & Ireland is committed to a high standard of sustainability and has intensified its efforts over recent months with the appointment of a new Sustainability Leader and the implementation of several initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of its products.

March 2022 Section Name 01

This switch will see some small changes to the appearance of product packaging, such as a grey rim and base. This is simply due to a number of different coloured plastics being recycled to make a new product, and not adding in unnecessary dyes. It is important to note that it is just the packaging that is changing, not the product, so customers can rest assured knowing they’re still getting the same, trusted Knauf product. Another change being made to the Knauf portfolio to lessen its environmental impact is on the GIFAbond flooring adhesives range. These products are used when installing Knauf GIFA FHB and Hugo floorboards. From January 2022 the product range will be EC1 Plus Emicode certified. The Emicode certification rates flooring adhesives and installation products into three categories. Knauf has achieved the highest possible rating of EC1 Plus, very low emission, defined as ‘the limit of what is technically feasible today’. To achieve this rating, the products must undergo rigorous testing with limits on VOCs, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and other hazardous substances which can affect indoor air quality and health. The Knauf EC1 Plus Emicode certified products will be GIFAbond Uno, a joint adhesive foil which is used with an application gun to the tongue and groove edge; GIFAbond Blue, a single layer joint adhesive in an easy to use

bottle for hand application, and GIFAbond Duo, a surface adhesive used on two-layer systems. It is not just its product range that Knauf is reviewing. The Company has recently rolled out fourteen new forklift trucks at its Sittingbourne plant bringing improved safety, greater management control and cleaner operation. In addition to having the latest safety features the new trucks are powered by Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG). This means they are much cleaner, producing far less particulate pollution than diesel and emitting much lower levels of CO2. Knauf is also working with its distribution partners to provide customers with a more environmentally friendly delivery option. One of its key distributors, Nicholls Transport, Winner of the Greenfleet Fleet of the Year award 2020, was among the first operators in the UK to use LNG trucks and has recently been recognised as an IVECO Ambassador for its Green Logistics Operation. These initiatives are part of Knauf’s ongoing sustainability programme and tie in with its ‘people, planet, prosperity’ ethos. Sustainability considerations are becoming more prevalent across the construction industry and Knauf is keen to lead the way in meeting customers’ expectations for environmentally friendly products. Mark Kilbride, Technical Manager at XL Joinery, comments: “Fire doors are traditionally seen as more functional than attractive, but when it comes to living spaces, aesthetics are an important consideration – after all, no one wants an unsightly door in their home. That’s why we’ve launched the Simpli Advanced® range. It combines our beautiful FSC® certified doors with the highest specification safety and security components to create a solution that offers style and safety in equal measure.” The doorsets in the Simpli Advanced® range are available in a stunning choice of styles for maximum elegance and integration into the home. They can be matched to XL Joinery’s wide range of internal door designs – including Suffolk, Palermo and Monza – and the oak, handle, viewer and intumescent seal are all available in an extensive choice of finishing options. Available with either FD30 or FD60 fire protection, the doors offer exceptional protection against fire. Batwing® drop and perimeter seals from Lorient work together to prevent the passage of smoke and fire to other parts of the building, while the superior closing force of the

ASSA ABLOY door closer ensures reliable closing every time. As a range of entrance doors, Simpli Advanced® also provides optimal security. The PAS24 and Secured By Design-approved Yale Platinum 3 Star Cylinder delivers first-class protection against the common attack method of lock-snapping, and for added protection, the FD60 option features the Yale Lockmaster lock and deadbolt. THE NEXT GENERATION OF COMPOSITE FIRE DOORS The award-winning Guardsman Fire Door from ODL Europe is a gamechanger for the composite fire door sector and gives architects and specifiers the fire safety credentials they are looking for. ODL Europe’s Technical Manager Ian Glenister explains.

F

or architects and specifiers specifying a fire door for a project, the requirement on the face of it is simple: it must deliver the required level of fire protection. But beneath that headline requirement, there are a wealth of other factors at play. For example, the door should have shown consistency over a range of test results and across a range of door manufacturers. Only then, can there be the confidence that the composite fire door has been truly specified and holds the necessary credentials when it comes to the door’s performance and stability. Our mission at ODL Europe is to build value into building products. So, when we started to develop a 30-minute composite fire door two years ago, our aim was developer-update.co.uk

simple: a door that eliminated the unknown elements of a composite fire door’s performance and delivered tried and tested, consistent test results. In other words, a fire door that was a gamechanger for the sector.

We could have relied on British Standard test evidence, but while this ticks all the boxes legally, we knew it doesn’t take a door out of its comfort zone so wouldn’t meet the standards we had set for ourselves.

We partnered with the engineers at our par tners Caps tone, the world-leading supplier of composite door slabs, and a select number of experienced fire door manufacturers who shared our ambitions. And we set the bar high.

We also needed to eliminate the phenolic foam that forms the core of an industry-standard 30-minute composite fire door. We knew a solid core was the way forward and the material we are using is Agrifiber. It is a board material made from resinbonded agricultural fibres and is a renewable source so has good environmental credentials.

Any 30-minute fire door we brought to the market would need to pass the European fire test standard of EN 1634, which is the more onerous test standard required by Part B of Building Regulations.

Unlike a foam, it is capable of delivering very consistent material densities and at the right density it has both superb

37 structural properties and excellent fire resistance. The result of our six-figure development investment is the Guardsman Composite Fire Door. It has been tested in glazed and unglazed versions. It has also been tested across multiple manufacturers. And in the most recent tests to EN 1634, we have achieved an average of 100% overrun past the 30-minute mark. At the extreme, our 30-minute Guardsman fire door achieved over 70 minutes. The doors have been tested as part of a doorset including our TriSYS glazing cassette and a TS008 letterplate. They have reached test ratings they have never achieved before, which demonstrates the importance of the solid core in the construction. Of course, while safety is rightly the first priority for a fire door, day-to-day practicalities also matter. As a Capstone door it has hardwood stiles and rails and a 2mm GRP skin. It means it has all the pedigree you would expect from a composite door developed by a manufacturer with Capstone’s credentials. It is a durable and robust door that is virtually maintenance-free and more than capable of withstanding the realities of everyday use while still maintaining a good-looking appearance. We believe the Guardsman Fire Door is the f irst in the nex t generation of composite fire doors, a generation that delivers better, more reliable protection in the event of fire, and it would seem the industry agrees. The Guardsman Composite Fire door was voted Best New Product of the Year at the prestigious G21 Awards. The credentials and outstanding performance of the Guardsman Fire Door were notable qualities that impressed the G Awards judges: “Achieving a 30-minute fire door with both glazing, a letterplate and with PAS 24:2016 performance is remarkable.” So, for architects and specifiers looking to work with the best in composite fire doors, then the award-winning Guardsman Composite Fire Door by ODL Europe offers the credentials and fire safety needed. EUROCELL MODUS

FILLS BATH WITH LIGHT “The foil gives an appearance like timber and the colour palette includes the heritage type colours that fit in with a period environment such as Bath,” comments Paul.

H

eritage colours and kerbside appeal were among the factors that persuaded the planning authorities of Bath that Modus PVC-U windows from Eurocell – the UK’s leading manufacturer, distributor and recycler of window, door, conservatory and roofline products – were the appropriate alternative to timber on a prime, exposed location near the UNESCO World Heritage Site. “The planners originally wanted timber windows but that wouldn’t work for our designs because we wanted to install matching fascias and sof fits that fitted beneath considerable eaves. This is on an exposed site at the top of a steep hill so they wouldn’t look great for very long,” explains Paul Baker, Regional Managing Director for Bloor Homes South West. “Timber windows, fascias and soffits would require expensive maintenance because of the scaffolding required to paint them. These PVC-U alternatives not only have kerb-appeal but are maintenance-free”. Bloor Homes South West had also had experience of the product at other developments throughout the region and had found it answered planning department concerns. It worked with the Eurocell New Build division, which supplied four samples to show the various colours that might work on site and to demonstrate the slim, timber-like sight lines of the Modus system.

developer-update.co.uk

Once the Bath and North East Somerset planning department was happy with Bloor’s proposal to use Modus windows in Hazy Grey, it gave the go-ahead for the same product range, but in Agate Grey, to be used at an adjacent development from the other housebuilder. BBA certified to function satisfactorily for more than 35 years, the Modus range has a U-value of 1.2 W/m² using 4/20/4 mm sealed double-glazed units. This effective thermal performance is due to the 75mm six-chamber profile system used in the Modus that enables the range to achieve a U-value as low as 0.7 by installing triple-glazed units.

Consisting of 50% post-consumer recycled PVC-U as standard, this range of doors and windows has a smaller carbon footprint than products made or recycled outside of the UK. Eurocell achieves this by employing dual material extrusion technology (DMET) that layers post-consumer recycled and ‘virgin’ material simultaneously, so the recycled material is concentrated in the central core of the profiles where it cannot be seen once the door or window is installed. Read the full story here or visit Eurocell.co.uk for more information on how Eurocell can help with your next project.

THE FOIL GIVES AN APPEARANCE LIKE TIMBER AND THE COLOUR PALETTE INCLUDES THE HERITAGE TYPE COLOURS THAT FIT IN WITH A PERIOD ENVIRONMENT SUCH AS BATH.”

It’s a no brainer Sleek lines with sustainability at the core — Modus PVC-U windows At a glance: Clean and contemporary looks with slimmer sight lines – unlike traditional PVC-U windows. Advanced engineering technology – achieves the new A++ Window Energy Rating and a 0.7 U-value. Sustainability as standard – manufactured using 50% recycled material. Saves money – costs up to 50% less than equivalents.

Market Leading Paving Brand Geo-Fix® Only Available From Bond It

F

rom 14th February we are pleased to announce that Bond It have acquired the sole distribution rights for the market leading Geo-Fix® All Weather and Geo-Fix® Original Paving Jointing Compounds. When Geo-Fix Original was f irst brought to market 25 years ago, the paving industry was a completely different landscape compared to today. With traditional cementitious jointing products causing huge problems for Local Authorities and contractors, it soon became clear that an alternative solution was required. After listening to the needs of the paving industry, Geo-Fix® developed a new technology using sand polymers to create Geo-Fix ® Original brush-in jointing compound – a truly original product that revolutionised traditional jointing methods. In 2013, the range was enhanced to include Geo-Fix® All Weather jointing compound, a superior brush-in sand that can be used in all weathers, and now offer a selection of beautiful coloured sands to complement all designs and tastes. Geo-Fix® is a ready mixed jointing that is simply brushed and compacted in to joints with minimal effort. Available in 2 versions, Original in 20kg buckets in Buff and Grey and All Weather in 14kg buckets in Stone, Mid Grey, Anthracite, Graphite and Slate Grey. developer-update.co.uk

PEOPLE ARCHITECTURE WINS THE DAY AS GT3 PICKS UP MAJOR AWARD Leading architecture practice GT3 Architects has seen its focus on team development recognised with a prestigious national award. The f irm – which has studios in Nottingham and Newcastle – has received the ‘People Development’ award at Constructing Excellence’s national ceremony, beating nominees from across the UK. The award recognises organisations that value their workforce and ensure they maximise their team’s contribution to the business, something which GT3 Architects has nurtured through its ‘People Architecture’ approach. Alongside a new operations and flexible working policy introduced to mitigate the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, the practice appointed a designated ‘people champion’ to lead its focus on personal and professional development. Liz Clarke, associate director and ‘people champion’ at GT3 Architects, said: “For a practice with a fundamental goal to place people – not buildings – at the heart of our projects, processes and practice-life, Covid-19 offered us an unparalleled opportunity to prove ‘People Architecture’ to be more than just a strapline.” The success of this approach was borne out in a staff survey, which showed that 97% of its staff base believed they are supported by their colleagues and team leaders, with 89% feeling that their work during lockdown directly contributed to practice success. Liz added: “We believe that our success stems f rom our commitment to placing people’s wellbeing at the heart of every business decision, and our quick

and sensitive reactions to feedback and changing circumstances.”

leisure facility in Staines-uponThames, Surrey – and grow its staff base by 10%.

“Throughout all the lockdowns, Sim on, Mark , an d our leadership team continued to prioritise a collaborative and transparent environment, communicating not just within our own practice, but proactively seeking peer reviews and external mentorship opportunities with our contemporaries.”

Simon Dunstan, director at GT3 Architects, said: “In a year when countless milestones, projects, and career choices were put on-hold, we made a conscious effort to continually put our people f irst, as well as contribute to the wider industry and support our local communities.”

Alongside staff-centric changes made during the pandemic, the workplace consultancy team at GT3 offered consultation sessions to local businesses struggling to adapt to a Covid-19 working environment, and the practice also launched its first Virtual Work Experience offering for students aged 14 – 18, subsequently supported by both the RIBA and Speakers for Schools. The award period also saw the firm secure new projects and R&D work – including the UK’s f irst wet and dry Passivhaus

“We are a rapidly growing practice, and we recognise that there is still plenty of work to do. We are exceptionally proud of our team, and will continue to align practice strategy and – hopefully – our continued successes with the individual development and wellbeing of our people. This award win is a real testament to our approach and we’re delighted to have been awarded to top spot.” For further information visit www.gt3architects.com or join the conversation over on Twitter @_GT3Architects. developer-update.co.uk
